though_o christ_n have_v bring_v great_a light_n into_o the_o world_n yet_o he_o never_o mean_v by_o it_o to_o put_v out_o any_o of_o that_o natural_a light_n which_o god_n have_v set_v up_o in_o former_a we_o be_v 2._o and_o first_o for_o that_o which_o be_v to_o be_v do_v before_o receive_v s._n paul_n tell_v we_o it_o be_v examination_n 1_o cor._n 11._o 28._o but_o let_v a_o man_n examine_v himself_o and_o so_o let_v he_o eat_v of_o that_o bread_n and_o drink_n of_o that_o cup._n but_o before_o i_o proceed_v to_o the_o particular_n of_o this_o examination_n i_o must_v in_o the_o general_n tell_v you_o examination_n that_o the_o special_a business_n we_o have_v to_o do_v in_o this_o sacrament_n be_v to_o repeat_v and_o renew_v that_o covenant_n we_o make_v with_o god_n in_o our_o baptism_n which_o we_o have_v many_o way_n grievous_o break_v it_o please_v god_n in_o his_o great_a mercy_n to_o suffer_v we_o to_o come_v to_o the_o renew_n of_o it_o in_o this_o sacrament_n which_o if_o we_o do_v in_o sincerity_n of_o heart_n he_o have_v promise_v to_o accept_v we_o and_o to_o give_v we_o all_o those_o benefit_n in_o this_o which_o he_o be_v ready_a to_o bestow_v in_o the_o other_o sacrament_n if_o we_o have_v not_o by_o our_o own_o fault_n forfeit_v they_o since_o then_o the_o renew_n of_o our_o covenant_n be_v our_o business_n of_o this_o time_n it_o follow_v that_o these_o three_o thing_n be_v necessary_a towards_o it_o first_o that_o we_o understand_v what_o that_o covenant_n be_v second_o that_o we_o consider_v what_o our_o breach_n of_o it_o have_v be_v and_o three_o that_o we_o resolve_v upon_o a_o strict_a observance_n of_o it_o for_o the_o rest_n of_o our_o life_n and_o the_o try_v ourselves_o in_o every_o one_o of_o these_o particular_n be_v that_o examination_n which_o be_v require_v of_o we_o before_o we_o come_v to_o this_o sacrament_n 3._o and_o first_o we_o be_v to_o examine_v whether_o we_o understand_v what_o this_o covenant_n be_v this_o be_v exceed_o necessary_a as_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o both_o the_o other_o for_o it_o be_v neither_o possible_a to_o discover_v our_o past_a sin_n nor_o to_o settle_v purpose_n against_o treatise_n concern_v the_o second_o covenant_n which_o be_v the_o foundation_n of_o that_o covenant_n which_o god_n make_v with_o we_o in_o our_o baptism_n and_o because_o you_o will_v there_o find_v such_o unworthy_a and_o unkind_a return_n to_o those_o tender_a and_o rich_a mercy_n of_o he_o and_o this_o consideration_n especial_o must_v melt_v your_o heart_n into_o a_o deep_a sorrow_n and_o contrition_n the_o degree_n whereof_o must_v be_v in_o some_o measure_n answerable_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o your_o sin_n and_o the_o great_a it_o be_v provide_v it_o be_v not_o such_o as_o shut_v mind_n to_o venture_v upon_o sin_n again_o 8._o for_o when_o we_o be_v tempt_v with_o any_o of_o the_o short_a pleasure_n of_o sin_n we_o may_v then_o out_o of_o our_o own_o experience_n set_v against_o they_o the_o sharp_a pain_n and_o terror_n of_o a_o accuse_a conscience_n which_o will_v to_o any_o that_o have_v feel_v they_o be_v able_a infinite_o to_o outweigh_v they_o endeavour_v therefore_o to_o bring_v your_o soul_n to_o this_o melt_a temper_n to_o this_o deep_a unfeigned_a sorrow_n and_o that_o not_o only_o for_o the_o danger_n you_o have_v bring_v upon_o yourself_o for_o though_o that_o be_v a_o consideration_n which_o may_v &_o aught_o to_o work_v sadness_n in_o we_o yet_o where_o that_o alone_o be_v the_o motive_n of_o our_o sorrow_n it_o be_v not_o that_o sorrow_n which_o will_v avail_v we_o for_o pardon_n and_o the_o reason_n of_o it_o be_v clear_a for_o that_o sorrow_n proceed_v only_o from_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o we_o be_v sorry_a because_o we_o be_v thyself_o how_o many_o and_o how_o great_a provocation_n thou_o have_v offer_v he_o perhaps_o in_o a_o continue_a course_n of_o many_o year_n wilful_a disobedience_n for_o which_o thou_o may_v with_o one_o in_o thy_o house_n who_o thou_o know_v come_v to_o rob_v thou_o of_o what_o be_v dear_a to_o thou_o 33._o and_o let_v not_o any_o experience_n of_o god_n mercy_n in_o pardon_v thou_o heretofore_o encourage_v thou_o sin_n again_o to_o provoke_v he_o for_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v the_o high_a degree_n of_o wickedness_n and_o unthankfulness_n to_o make_v that_o goodness_n of_o he_o now_o so_o it_o be_v here_o god_n be_v as_o well_o just_a as_o merciful_a and_o his_o justice_n will_v at_o last_o sure_o and_o heavy_o avenge_v the_o abuse_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o there_o can_v be_v a_o great_a abuse_n of_o his_o mercy_n then_o to_o sin_n in_o hope_n of_o it_o so_o that_o it_o will_v prove_v a_o minserable_a deceive_a of_o thyself_o thus_o to_o presume_v upon_o it_o 34._o now_o this_o care_n of_o make_v good_a thy_o vow_n perpetual_a must_v not_o abide_v with_o thou_o some_o few_o day_n only_o and_o then_o be_v cast_v aside_o but_o it_o must_v continue_v with_o thou_o insirmity_n because_o thou_o can_v not_o avoid_v they_o but_o of_o perverseness_n because_o thou_o will_v not_o beside_o the_o use_n of_o christian-walking_a must_v needs_o make_v it_o more_o easy_a stranger_n as_o acquaintance_n but_o more_o particular_o those_o to_o who_o we_o have_v any_o especial_a relation_n either_o public_a as_o our_o governor_n both_o in_o church_n and_o state_n or_o private_a as_o parent_n husband_n wife_n child_n friend_n etc._n etc._n we_o be_v also_o to_o pray_v for_o all_o that_o be_v in_o affliction_n and_o such_o particular_a person_n as_o we_o discern_v especial_o to_o be_v so_o yea_o we_o be_v to_o pray_v for_o those_o that_o have_v do_v we_o injury_n those_o that_o despiteful_o use_v we_o and_o persecute_v we_o for_o it_o be_v express_o the_o a_o profane_a or_o worldly_a to_o a_o christian_a course_n of_o life_n thou_o be_v sure_o in_o the_o high_a degree_n tie_v to_o magnify_v and_o praise_v his_o goodness_n as_o have_v receive_v from_o he_o the_o great_a of_o mercy_n 10._o we_o be_v likewise_o to_o give_v thanks_o for_o temporal_a blessing_n whether_o such_o as_o concern_v the_o public_a as_o the_o prosperity_n of_o the_o church_n temporal_a or_o nation_n and_o all_o remarkable_a deliverance_n afford_v to_o either_o or_o else_o such_o as_o concern_v our_o particular_n such_o be_v all_o the_o good_a thing_n of_o this_o life_n which_o we_o enjoy_v as_o health_n friend_n food_n raiment_n and_o the_o like_a also_o for_o those_o minutely_o preservation_n whereby_o we_o be_v by_o god_n gracious_a providence_n keep_v from_o danger_n and_o the_o especial_a deliverance_n which_o god_n have_v give_v we_o in_o time_n of_o great_a peril_n it_o will_v be_v impossible_a to_o set_v down_o the_o several_a mercy_n which_o every_o man_n receive_v from_o god_n because_o they_o differ_v in_o kind_n and_o degree_n between_o one_o man_n and_o another_o but_o it_o be_v sure_a that_o he_o which_o receive_v lest_o have_v yet_o public_o and_o private_o the_o public_a use_n of_o they_o be_v first_o that_o in_o the_o church_n where_o all_o meet_a to_o join_v in_o those_o prayer_n wherein_o they_o be_v in_o common_a concern_v there_o be_v such_o prayer_n it_o be_v as_o much_o his_o part_n thus_o to_o provide_v for_o the_o soul_n of_o his_o child_n and_o servant_n as_o to_o provide_v food_n for_o their_o body_n therefore_o there_o be_v none_o even_o the_o mean_a householder_n but_o aught_o to_o take_v this_o care_n if_o either_o himself_o or_o any_o of_o his_o family_n can_v read_v he_o may_v use_v some_o prayer_n out_o of_o some_o good_a book_n if_o it_o be_v the_o service_n book_n of_o the_o church_n he_o make_v a_o good_a choice_n if_o they_o can_v read_v it_o will_v then_o be_v necessary_a they_o shall_v be_v teach_v without_o book_n some_o form_n of_o prayer_n which_o they_o may_v use_v in_o the_o family_n for_o which_o purpose_n again_o some_o of_o the_o prayer_n of_o the_o church_n will_v be_v very_o fit_a as_o be_v most_o easy_a for_o their_o memory_n by_o reason_n of_o their_o shortness_n and_o yet_o contain_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o matter_n but_o what_o choice_n soever_o they_o make_v of_o prayer_n let_v they_o be_v sure_a to_o have_v some_o and_o let_v no_o man_n that_o profess_v himself_o a_o christian_n keep_v so_o heat_n henish_a a_o family_n as_o not_o to_o see_v god_n be_v daily_o worship_v in_o it_o but_o when_o the_o master_n of_o a_o family_n have_v do_v his_o duty_n in_o this_o provide_v it_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o every_o member_n of_o it_o to_o make_v use_n of_o that_o provision_n by_o be_v constant_a and_o diligent_a at_o those_o family-prayer_n 13._o private_a or_o secret_a prayer_n be_v that_o which_o prayer_n be_v use_v by_o a_o man_n alone_o apart_o from_o all_o other_o wherein_o we_o be_v to_o be_v more_o particular_a according_a to_o our_o particular_a need_n then_o in_o public_a it_o be_v fit_a to_o be_v and_o this_o of_o private_a prayer_n be_v a_o duty_n which_o will_v not_o be_v excuse_v by_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o other_o of_o public_a they_o be_v both_o require_v and_o one_o must_v not_o be_v take_v in_o exchange_n for_o the_o other_o and_o whoever_o be_v diligent_a in_o public_a prayer_n and_o yet_o negligent_a in_o private_a it_o be_v much_o to_o be_v fear_v he_o rather_o seek_v to_o approve_v himself_o to_o man_n then_o to_o god_n contrary_a to_o the_o command_n of_o our_o saviour_n mat._n 6._o who_o enjoin_v this_o private_a prayer_n this_o pray_v to_o our_o father_n in_o secret_a from_o who_o alone_o we_o be_v to_o expect_v our_o reward_n and_o not_o from_o the_o vain_a praise_n of_o man_n 14._o now_o this_o duty_n of_o prayer_n be_v to_o be_v often_o prayer_n perform_v by_o none_o seldome_a than_o evening_n will_v not_o fail_v to_o make_v good_a his_o promise_n let_v not_o then_o that_o infidel_n fear_v of_o future_a want_n contract_n and_o shut_v up_o thy_o bowel_n from_o thy_o poor_a brother_n for_o though_o he_o be_v never_o likely_a to_o pay_v thou_o yet_o god_n become_v his_o surety_n and_o enter_v bond_n with_o he_o and_o will_v most_o assure_o pay_v thou_o with_o increase_n therefore_o it_o alm_n to_o seed_n 2_o cor._n 9_o 10._o we_o know_v it_o be_v the_o nature_n of_o seed_n that_o be_v sow_v to_o multiply_v and_o increase_v and_o so_o do_v all_o our_o act_n of_o mercy_n they_o return_v nor_o single_a and_o naked_a to_o we_o but_o bring_v in_o their_o sheaf_n with_o they_o a_o most_o plenteous_a &_o bountiful_a harvest_n god_n deal_v not_o with_o our_o alm_n as_o we_o too_o
