special_o against_o our_o conscience_n and_o a_o desire_n to_o live_v unto_o god_n that_o be_v to_o say_v godlilie_o righteous_o and_o sober_o in_o this_o present_a evil_a world_n we_o not_o doubt_v and_o distrust_v god_n and_o his_o promise_n but_o be_v jealous_a over_o ourselves_o &_o that_o not_o amiss_o &_o suspect_v our_o own_o strength_n he_o will_v have_v we_o whole_o &_o only_o to_o depend_v upon_o god_n or_o else_o enjoin_v such_o fear_n and_o tremble_a as_o respect_v not_o god_n grace_n &_o mercy_n as_o though_o he_o will_v not_o for_o christ_n sake_n forgive_v we_o our_o sin_n believe_v in_o he_o but_o our_o own_o weakness_n and_o infirmity_n will_v we_o to_o keep_v a_o good_a watch_n thereof_o lest_o we_o offend_v &_o be_v want_v in_o our_o duty_n on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o any_o thing_n be_v forbid_v it_o be_v not_o faith_n or_o trust_v in_o god_n touch_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n but_o carnal_a security_n he_o tell_v we_o that_o so_o far_o forth_o as_o we_o respect_v ourselves_o or_o our_o own_o strength_n or_o stay_v thereupon_o we_o have_v good_a cause_n both_o to_o suspect_v ourselves_o and_o to_o tremble_v and_o fear_v because_o by_o nature_n we_o be_v full_a of_o waver_v and_o inconstancy_n and_o easy_o urn_n aside_o and_o fall_v away_o unless_o god_n underproppe_v we_o and_o bring_v we_o back_o again_o when_o we_o have_v stray_v and_o he_o that_o have_v but_o half_a a_o eye_n as_o we_o say_v and_o will_v well_o view_v and_o consider_v the_o text_n itself_o shall_v see_v that_o no_o other_o thing_n they_o this_o can_v be_v gather_v out_o of_o it_o and_o much_o less_o that_o gross_a conceit_n of_o doubt_v and_o distrust_n but_o let_v we_o proceed_v 5_o some_o other_o place_n they_o seem_v to_o make_v show_n of_o as_o if_o it_o be_v to_o monster_n out_o of_o the_o new_a testament_n that_o so_o they_o may_v in_o appearance_n of_o multitude_n make_v strong_a that_o which_o in_o truth_n and_o goodness_n of_o cause_n can_v never_o be_v uphold_v to_o touch_v they_o all_o will_v be_v tedious_a and_o indeed_o needless_a to_o because_o nothing_o be_v or_o can_v be_v say_v out_o of_o they_o which_o be_v not_o of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o the_o former_a and_o yet_o one_o or_o two_o more_o which_o they_o make_v the_o great_a account_n of_o we_o can_v or_o will_v not_o omit_v 1._o pet._n 1._o verse_n 17._o they_o find_v and_o urge_v these_o word_n pass_v the_o time_n of_o your_o dwell_n here_o in_o fear_n whereunto_o we_o say_v how_o oft_o will_v they_o press_v this_o cram_n or_o colewort_n more_o than_o ten_o time_n sod_a i_o call_v it_o so_o in_o the_o sense_n as_o they_o allege_v it_o and_o not_o otherwise_o how_o often_o shall_v we_o tell_v that_o fear_n and_o doubt_v differ_v or_o when_o will_v they_o themselves_o show_v that_o they_o be_v all_o one_o he_o that_o will_v look_v well_o into_o that_o which_o go_v before_o from_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o chapter_n allege_v hitherto_o and_o to_o that_o that_o we_o that_o be_v by_o nature_n sinner_n have_v yet_o through_o god_n free_a mercy_n obtain_v this_o favour_n that_o we_o be_v from_o before_o all_o time_n elect_v and_o that_o by_o the_o strength_n of_o the_o eternal_a decree_n as_o if_o it_o be_v by_o a_o second_o creation_n we_o be_v become_v god_n son_n through_o christ_n by_o who_o spirit_n also_o we_o be_v inward_o change_v and_o outward_o likewise_o renew_a &_o all_o through_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n &_o the_o blood_n of_o jesus_n christ_n that_o as_o he_o rise_v from_o the_o dead_a so_o both_o here_o in_o this_o life_n we_o shall_v rise_v to_o newenesse_n of_o life_n and_o in_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v to_o heavenly_a and_o everlasting_a glory_n the_o way_n whereunto_o he_o show_v to_o be_v such_o affliction_n as_o we_o suffer_v in_o this_o life_n for_o the_o testimony_n of_o christ_n which_o because_o they_o be_v not_o many_o time_n so_o take_v to_o be_v nor_o so_o well_o and_o comfortable_o here_o that_o command_v we_o to_o doubt_v or_o rather_o that_o propound_v not_o assurance_n unto_o we_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n eternal_a election_n jesus_n christ_n shed_v of_o his_o blood_n the_o inward_a &_o outward_a sanctification_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o word_n a_o lively_a faith_n a_o certain_a hope_n a_o sincere_a obedience_n and_o what_o not_o all_o testify_a unto_o we_o not_o only_o the_o vanity_n but_o also_o the_o falsehood_n of_o this_o popish_a assertion_n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v he_o be_v so_o far_o off_o from_o minister_a matter_n of_o doubtfulness_n and_o distrust_n that_o he_o rather_o yield_v strong_a consolation_n and_o by_o mean_n thereof_o a_o peaceable_a and_o mighty_a persuasion_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o assure_a goodness_n towards_o we_o in_o christ_n deal_v not_o otherwise_o here_o then_o as_o paul_n have_v do_v in_o sundry_a place_n before_o expound_v namely_o oppose_v fear_n to_o fleshly_a security_n which_o as_o we_o have_v hear_v to_o much_o trust_n and_o confidence_n in_o ourselves_o bring_v forth_o and_o not_o oppose_v it_o to_o doubtfulness_n &_o distrust_n which_o be_v set_v against_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n and_o the_o assure_a trust_n and_o hope_n that_o we_o have_v concern_v our_o salvation_n which_o as_o we_o may_v perceive_v by_o that_o that_o go_v before_o some_o think_v it_o will_v be_v evict_v to_o that_o which_o follow_v after_o for_o present_o he_o add_v knowe_a that_o you_o be_v not_o redeem_v with_o corruptible_a thing_n as_o silver_n and_o gold_n from_o your_o vain_a conversation_n by_o the_o tradition_n of_o the_o father_n where_o we_o say_v that_o with_o the_o fear_n he_o wish_v they_o to_o have_v he_o couple_v this_o excellent_a knowledge_n of_o our_o redemption_n in_o christ_n that_o as_o in_o the_o ministry_n &_o matter_n itself_o theris_fw-la all_o assure_a certainty_n so_o in_o our_o sound_a knowledge_n thereof_o all_o doubtfulness_n and_o distrustfulness_n may_v be_v avoid_v because_o they_o seldom_o or_o never_o fall_v out_o but_o in_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o sure_o know_v steadfast_o believe_v or_o well_o and_o effectual_o feel_v 6_o to_o this_o they_o adjoine_v another_o place_n out_o of_o the_o first_o chapter_n of_o his_o second_o epistle_n verse_n 10._o where_o he_o say_v wherefore_o brethren_n give_v rather_o diligence_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a therefore_o say_v they_o the_o faithful_a can_v be_v assure_v of_o their_o salvation_n but_o we_o say_v this_o be_v ill_o infer_v and_o as_o we_o shall_v hear_v anon_o no_o such_o thing_n to_o the_o suffiency_n of_o any_o thing_n we_o do_v or_o can_v do_v for_o we_o confess_v as_o the_o faithful_a have_v do_v before_o we_o that_o all_o our_o righteousness_n before_o god_n be_v as_o filthy_a and_o stain_a clout_n &_o say_v unfeigned_o as_o our_o saviour_n himself_o have_v teach_v we_o when_o we_o have_v do_v all_o that_o we_o can_v do_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n so_o that_o we_o may_v say_v and_o say_v safe_o the_o proposition_n or_o mayor_n be_v false_a and_o that_o not_o only_o for_o that_o which_o have_v be_v allege_v already_o but_o also_o because_o that_o the_o scripture_n in_o many_o place_n for_o the_o comfort_n of_o the_o child_n of_o god_n in_o the_o multitude_n of_o their_o sin_n know_v or_o not_o know_v feel_v or_o not_o feel_v in_o themselves_o confess_v or_o not_o confess_v before_o god_n have_v put_v down_o many_o worthy_a and_o general_a comfort_n as_o isaiah_n the_o 1._o though_o your_o sin_n be_v as_o crimson_a they_o shall_v be_v their_o purpose_n because_o remission_n of_o sin_n &_o the_o comfort_n follow_v thereupon_o against_o the_o doubtfulness_n of_o our_o heart_n stand_v not_o in_o know_v or_o feel_v all_o and_o every_o particular_a or_o special_a sin_n that_o man_n have_v commit_v but_o in_o the_o lively_a apprehension_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n declare_v in_o the_o heavenly_a promise_n of_o his_o word_n not_o impute_v unto_o we_o our_o transgression_n nay_o which_o be_v more_o impute_v unto_o we_o through_o faith_n that_o take_v hold_v thereof_o the_o innocency_n holiness_n &_o obedience_n our_o salvation_n but_o god_n only_o know_v the_o heart_n &_o search_v the_o reins_n therefore_o he_o only_o know_v the_o certainty_n and_o assuredness_n of_o our_o salvation_n all_o the_o fear_n &_o strength_n of_o this_o reason_n rest_v in_o the_o mayor_n or_o proposition_n as_o we_o call_v it_o &_o in_o the_o large_a or_o narrow_a signification_n of_o this_o word_n knower_n of_o the_o heart_n wherefore_o have_v answer_v or_o satisfy_v that_o all_o the_o rest_n will_v be_v find_v weak_a than_o water_n i_o mean_v for_o the_o strength_n and_o maintenance_n of_o this_o matter_n god_n be_v so_o the_o only_a searcher_n and_o knower_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o yet_o notwistand_v he_o have_v in_o some_o measure_n even_o communicate_v that_o grace_n unto_o diverse_a of_o his_o child_n though_o happy_o not_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o other_o so_o much_o yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o every_o particular_a faithful_a man_n own_o estate_n for_o as_o this_o that_o god_n be_v only_o wise_a only_o just_a etc._n etc._n do_v not_o evacuate_v or_o overthrow_v the_o wisdom_n justice_n etc._n etc._n that_o from_o that_o infinite_a fountain_n that_o be_v in_o he_o be_v convey_v over_o unto_o man_n special_o his_o child_n so_o that_o he_o alone_o know_v man_n heart_n hinder_v not_o this_o but_o that_o other_o man_n may_v know_v though_o not_o other_o man_n yet_o their_o own_o heart_n reasonable_a well_o for_o this_o of_o search_v the_o heart_n be_v as_o also_o the_o former_a above_o name_v be_v of_o that_o sort_n of_o attribute_n in_o or_o to_o god_n which_o though_o they_o be_v in_o he_o in_o all_o absolute_a fullness_n and_o without_o measure_n yet_o be_v they_o communicate_v to_o the_o godly_a especial_o and_o that_o in_o such_o measure_n as_o he_o see_v to_o be_v fit_a for_o they_o and_o yet_o he_o have_v never_o a_o whit_n the_o less_o in_o himself_o and_o this_o be_v that_o in_o some_o sort_n and_o sense_n which_o solomon_n say_v in_o the_o proverbe_n the_o thought_n of_o man_n heart_n be_v as_o deep_a fountain_n but_o a_o man_n of_o understanding_n will_v draw_v they_o dry_a but_o more_o plain_o and_o particular_o the_o apostle_n say_v no_o man_n know_v the_o thing_n of_o a_o man_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n which_o be_v within_o himself_o but_o god_n spirit_n make_v the_o spiritual_a man_n able_a to_o judge_v and_o discern_v all_o thing_n yet_o he_o himself_o to_o be_v judge_v of_o no_o man_n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v that_o the_o mayor_n proposition_n be_v not_o simple_a here_o but_o must_v of_o necessity_n be_v understand_v with_o a_o condition_n or_o exception_n thus_o he_o that_o alone_o be_v the_o knower_n of_o the_o heart_n yea_o of_o all_o thing_n he_o only_o be_v assure_v or_o certain_o know_v our_o salvation_n unless_o it_o have_v please_v he_o in_o his_o word_n to_o reveal_v something_o concern_v that_o unto_o we_o and_o will_v have_v we_o thereby_o to_o be_v assure_v thereof_o for_o then_o have_v communicate_v that_o knowledge_n which_o in_o himself_o be_v
condemn_v our_o own_o deed_n and_o work_n and_o renounce_v they_o utter_o to_o rest_n and_o stay_v ourselves_o upon_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n promise_v unto_o we_o for_o christ_n our_o saviour_n his_o sake_n and_o always_o both_o in_o mind_n and_o mouth_n to_o have_v that_o worthy_a say_n of_o the_o prophet_n rise_v with_o we_o enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n o_o lord_n for_o then_o no_o flesh_n shall_v be_v righteouse_a in_o thy_o sight_n and_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n 1._o cor._n 4._o i_o know_v nothing_o by_o myself_o and_o yet_o i_o be_o not_o just_a or_o justify_v for_o all_o that_o one_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n as_o they_o suppose_v but_o arrogancy_n and_o indeed_o contempt_n of_o god_n and_o heavenly_a promise_n not_o to_o give_v credit_n to_o or_o not_o to_o believe_v these_o sweet_a promise_n and_o therefore_o saint_n john_n say_v he_o that_o believe_v not_o god_n have_v make_v he_o a_o liar_n 1._o john_n 5.10_o and_o we_o may_v see_v a_o memorable_a example_n of_o it_o in_o ahaz_n isaiah_n 7._o who_o refuse_v a_o sign_n give_v unto_o he_o from_o god_n but_o they_o press_v this_o further_a &_o say_v it_o be_v a_o token_n of_o humility_n to_o acknowledge_v our_o infirmity_n and_o sin_n and_o who_o will_v deny_v that_o that_o have_v any_o fault_n or_o savour_n in_o he_o of_o godliness_n but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n who_o know_v not_o that_o humility_n and_o doubt_v differ_v as_o much_o as_o vice_n &_o virtue_n or_o what_o man_n unless_o he_o be_v mad_a not_o only_o without_o reason_n but_o against_o godliness_n will_v suppose_v that_o our_o true_a humility_n shall_v destroy_v confidence_n boldness_n or_o faith_n concern_v god_n grace_n forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o eternal_a salvation_n since_o our_o humility_n be_v as_o other_o good_a thing_n in_o we_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o faith_n if_o man_n do_v sound_o understand_v what_o humility_n be_v they_o will_v doubtless_o be_v of_o another_o mind_n they_o conclude_v so_o this_o be_v humility_n not_o only_o true_o to_o fear_n god_n as_o a_o judge_n and_o so_o to_o acknowledge_v in_o his_o sight_n our_o sin_n and_o this_o take_v away_o a_o sick_a man_n sickness_n that_o he_o lay_v it_o open_a to_o the_o physician_n and_o require_v medicine_n no_o very_o but_o rather_o argue_v poverty_n weakness_n sickness_n etc._n etc._n and_o so_o do_v our_o humility_n but_o let_v we_o go_v forward_o 9_o the_o nine_o argument_n be_v this_o where_o there_o be_v unworthiness_n there_o can_v be_v assurance_n of_o god_n grace_n of_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o of_o salvation_n but_o still_o there_o must_v be_v doubt_v but_o in_o they_o that_o be_v turn_v to_o god_n there_o be_v great_a unworthiness_n while_o they_o know_v not_o whether_o they_o have_v sufficient_o and_o worthy_o prepare_v themselves_o and_o perform_v all_o the_o covenant_n and_o condition_n that_o god_n have_v prescribe_v therefore_o thirteen_o where_o he_o say_v we_o can_v do_v any_o thing_n against_o the_o truth_n but_o for_o the_o truth_n now_o we_o be_v in_o as_o few_o word_n as_o possible_o we_o can_v to_o declare_v that_o this_o their_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v direct_o strive_v against_o god_n holy_a word_n &_o the_o writing_n of_o the_o founder_n father_n religion_n reason_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o we_o can_v and_o from_o the_o object_n which_o our_o faith_n though_o it_o be_v weak_a lay_v hold_v of_o we_o have_v much_o firm_a and_o assure_a comfort_n and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o true_a we_o can_v not_o special_a revelation_n and_o not_o that_o they_o affirm_v that_o all_o the_o faithful_a have_v the_o like_a assurance_n but_o the_o answer_n be_v easy_a the_o apostle_n do_v or_o do_v not_o speak_v only_o of_o themselves_o but_o of_o all_o the_o faithful_a and_o not_o of_o their_o own_o faith_n and_o salvation_n only_o but_o of_o

we_o which_o point_n if_o we_o know_v well_o we_o shall_v be_v make_v able_a the_o better_a and_o more_o easy_o to_o clear_v and_o void_a this_o point_n but_o yet_o they_o persist_v and_o say_v that_o epicure_n and_o profane_a man_n even_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o their_o iniquity_n may_v suppose_v that_o they_o have_v such_o a_o persuasion_n of_o certainty_n &_o assurance_n but_o we_o tell_v they_o first_o that_o our_o question_n of_o true_a faith_n and_o of_o they_o that_o do_v indeed_o believe_v and_o not_o of_o epicure_n and_o profane_a person_n or_o of_o a_o dead_a faith_n which_o many_o hypocrite_n yea_o devil_n may_v have_v as_o s._n james_n plain_o show_v and_o that_o therefore_o they_o do_v evil_a and_o miss_v the_o mark_n when_o they_o compare_v not_o only_o diverse_a but_o contrary_a both_o man_n and_o matter_n together_o second_o that_o we_o be_v hartilye_o sorry_a for_o their_o blindness_n and_o ignorance_n that_o can_v as_o yet_o make_v a_o difference_n between_o the_o imagination_n and_o conceit_n of_o the_o wicked_a which_o common_o breed_v and_o bring_v forth_o in_o they_o senseless_a and_o carelessness_n and_o the_o persuasion_n of_o the_o godly_a which_o as_o they_o work_v comfort_n for_o the_o sin_n already_o past_a so_o do_v they_o breed_v care_n of_o conversation_n for_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v three_o we_o say_v that_o howsoever_o the_o world_n may_v fantasy_n and_o imagine_v some_o such_o matter_n yet_o they_o can_v feel_v it_o or_o be_v indeed_o thorough_o persuade_v of_o it_o not_o only_o because_o god_n say_v by_o the_o prophet_n there_o be_v no_o peace_n to_o the_o wicked_a who_o be_v like_o the_o rage_a sea_n that_o can_v not_o rest_v who_o water_n cast_v up_o mire_n and_o dirt_n but_o also_o because_o want_v faith_n without_o which_o also_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o please_v god_n they_o must_v lack_v this_o effect_n of_o it_o even_o the_o quiet_a fruit_n of_o righteousness_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n before_o god_n and_o man_n but_o let_v we_o proceed_v to_o some_o further_a exception_n they_o make_v against_o this_o truth_n some_o of_o they_o say_v that_o be_v not_o present_o perform_v which_o be_v promise_v therefore_o from_o this_o that_o god_n have_v promise_v we_o salvation_n it_o will_v not_o follow_v that_o we_o present_o lie_v hold_v thereon_o and_o therefore_o we_o can_v from_o the_o promise_n that_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o concern_v our_o salvation_n conclude_v that_o we_o ought_v to_o be_v sure_o concern_v it_o as_o if_o it_o be_v already_o accomplish_v and_o perform_v there_o be_v many_o thing_n to_o be_v say_v to_o this_o exception_n or_o objection_n we_o deny_v not_o this_o that_o god_n do_v not_o always_o present_o perform_v the_o thing_n he_o have_v promise_v but_o that_o this_o shall_v be_v infer_v that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v doubt_v of_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o they_o in_o that_o time_n that_o god_n have_v set_v with_o himself_o from_o before_o all_o time_n be_v neither_o savoury_a in_o itself_o nor_o will_v follow_v from_o the_o antecedent_n i_o will_v put_v one_o case_n that_o shall_v make_v it_o as_o plain_a as_o possible_o can_v be_v our_o saviour_n christ_n be_v promise_v to_o our_o first_o parent_n present_o after_o the_o fall_n to_o be_v the_o person_n by_o who_o god_n will_v reconcile_v the_o world_n unto_o himself_o and_o yet_o he_o be_v not_o manifest_v in_o the_o flesh_n many_o thousand_o of_o year_n after_o what_o shall_v they_o then_o or_o those_o that_o do_v succeed_v they_o after_o have_v doubt_v of_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o this_o most_o sweet_a &_o comfortable_a promise_n because_o it_o be_v not_o present_o perform_v away_o with_o such_o wickedness_n i_o will_v fain_o see_v a_o reason_n for_o this_o why_o we_o shall_v not_o as_o well_o doubt_v of_o that_o which_o be_v past_a so_o many_o hundred_o or_o thousand_o of_o year_n if_o you_o will_v because_o it_o be_v not_o present_o perform_v or_o we_o behold_v it_o not_o with_o our_o eye_n or_o have_v the_o rest_n of_o our_o sense_n satisfy_v therein_o as_o doubt_v of_o that_o which_o in_o the_o strength_n &_o power_n of_o god_n promise_v be_v to_o be_v perform_v in_o time_n because_o it_o be_v not_o present_o do_v &_o why_o may_v not_o a_o man_n as_o safe_o infer_v even_o by_o the_o contrary_a and_o that_o also_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o godly_a that_o if_o they_o will_v have_v they_o to_o doubt_v of_o the_o accomplishment_n of_o god_n promise_n because_o they_o be_v differ_v they_o must_v not_o fear_v but_o tremble_v with_o the_o devil_n &_o damn_a as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o judgement_n &_o vengeance_n that_o be_v for_o to_o come_v nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o if_o this_o be_v right_a that_o they_o propound_v as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o faithful_a that_o they_o shall_v doubt_v because_o it_o be_v not_o by_o and_o by_o perform_v that_o be_v promise_v that_o they_o the_o wicked_a need_v not_o fear_n or_o doubt_n as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o wrath_n that_o be_v threaten_v because_o it_o be_v delay_v for_o of_o contrary_a thing_n there_o be_v the_o contrary_a reason_n or_o consideration_n and_o we_o know_v that_o to_o be_v true_a which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o preacher_n though_o a_o sinner_n do_v evil_a a_o hundred_o time_n and_o god_n prolong_v his_o day_n yet_o i_o know_v it_o shall_v be_v well_o with_o they_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n and_o do_v reverence_n before_o he_o but_o it_o shall_v not_o be_v well_o to_o the_o wicked_a neither_o shall_v he_o as_o satan_n against_o i_o but_o even_o from_o the_o testimony_n and_o witness_n of_o god_n holy_a word_n i_o know_v i_o be_o faithful_a and_o i_o be_o confirm_v in_o the_o truth_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o persuasion_n because_o i_o do_v not_o in_o a_o evil_a or_o idle_a opinion_n but_o in_o true_a and_o certain_a faith_n lie_v hold_v of_o christ_n and_o stay_v and_o settle_v myself_o whole_o and_o only_o upon_o he_o this_o no_o heathen_a idolater_n can_v do_v because_o he_o be_v not_o only_o without_o christ_n but_o without_o god_n in_o the_o world_n this_o no_n mahometist_n or_o jew_n can_v perform_v because_o they_o deny_v he_o and_o defy_v he_o from_o their_o heart_n this_o no_v counterfeit_v or_o corrupt_a christian_n can_v accomplish_v for_o the_o false_a christian_n as_o papist_n join_v their_o work_n at_o the_o least_o with_o he_o and_o the_o carnal_a professor_n in_o the_o corrupt_a course_n of_o his_o conversation_n deny_v his_o power_n to_o mortification_n and_o sanctification_n therefore_o i_o separate_v from_o all_o and_o everye_o one_o of_o they_o in_o strength_n of_o persuasion_n in_o particular_a application_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o bless_a obedience_n can_v perish_v but_o may_v truelye_o and_o effectual_o say_v that_o christ_n jesus_n dwell_v in_o my_o heart_n and_o make_v i_o fruitful_a to_o good_a work_n and_o i_o again_o be_v apostle_n say_v in_o the_o general_a doctrine_n of_o the_o word_n where_o sin_n have_v abound_v there_o grace_n have_v over_o abound_v and_o free_o confess_v of_o himself_o that_o god_n have_v mercy_n on_o he_o the_o chief_a of_o all_o sinner_n and_o therefore_o i_o be_o so_o far_o of_o from_o despair_n in_o myself_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o in_o that_o respect_n i_o may_v cover_v my_o face_n with_o shame_n that_o i_o may_v rather_o great_o comfort_v myself_o because_o in_o this_o life_n god_n favour_n and_o good_a will_n do_v not_o in_o any_o thing_n so_o plain_o appear_v as_o in_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o my_o sin_n but_o satan_n will_v yet_o again_o press_v and_o urge_v this_o further_a thus_o the_o faithful_a very_o be_v not_o damn_v but_o save_v by_o christ_n but_o thou_o be_v not_o faithful_a or_o have_v not_o faith_n therefore_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n but_o must_v notwithstanding_o for_o the_o want_n of_o thy_o faith_n remain_v still_o under_o condemnation_n for_o answer_v whereto_o i_o say_v still_o notwithstanding_o all_o thy_o opposition_n satan_n that_o i_o have_v faith_n and_o do_v believe_v and_o if_o thou_o will_v ask_v how_o i_o and_o some_o late_a and_o yet_o their_o condition_n not_o much_o the_o worse_o for_o that_o which_o our_o saviour_n himself_o declare_v in_o the_o parable_n of_o they_o that_o be_v call_v at_o diverse_a time_n to_o work_v in_o his_o vyneyard_n mat._n 20._o where_o those_o that_o be_v call_v at_o the_o dawn_n of_o the_o day_n and_o at_o the_o three_o sixth_o &_o nine_o hour_n they_o murmur_v at_o this_o that_o they_o come_v at_o the_o eleven_o hour_n receive_v as_o much_o as_o themselves_o which_o have_v bear_v the_o burden_n and_o heat_n of_o the_o day_n but_o what_o say_v the_o master_n of_o the_o vineyard_n friend_n i_o have_v do_v you_o no_o wrong_n take_v that_o which_o be_v your_o own_o go_v your_o way_n i_o will_v give_v unto_o this_o last_o as_o much_o as_o unto_o you_o and_o we_o know_v this_o be_v usual_a in_o these_o proverbial_a sentence_n that_o one_o of_o they_o be_v opposite_a to_o another_o when_o therefore_o he_o have_v say_v bless_a be_v he_o that_o fear_v much_o continual_o &_o by_o &_o by_o add_v but_o he_o that_o harden_v his_o heart_n etc._n etc._n he_o plain_o declare_v that_o in_o the_o first_o part_n of_o the_o verse_n he_o mind_v to_o commend_v &_o set_v out_o such_o a_o fear_n of_o offend_v and_o displease_v god_n as_o be_v opposite_a to_o hardness_n of_o hart_n contemn_v god_n wherefore_o doubtless_o he_o mind_v to_o signify_v the_o secure_a &_o proud_a person_n such_o i_o mean_v as_o not_o be_v move_v neither_o by_o god_n commandment_n nor_o threaten_n lay_v the_o reins_n in_o their_o own_o neck_n &_o follow_v their_o pleasure_n shall_v sure_o fall_v into_o wrath_n and_o punishment_n

that_o they_o keep_v the_o word_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n and_o therefore_o also_o to_o such_o as_o after_o this_o manner_n embrace_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o profess_v it_o believe_v it_o and_o obey_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n be_v very_o large_a and_o excellent_a grace_n promise_v as_o justification_n sanctification_n and_o glorification_n etc._n etc._n not_o because_o imperfect_a work_n can_v merit_v or_o deserve_v any_o more_o at_o god_n hand_n then_o gross_a corruption_n for_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o his_o absolute_a justice_n no_o imperfect_a thing_n can_v please_v he_o but_o because_o that_o god_n through_o his_o mercy_n and_o christ_n obedience_n be_v please_v as_o to_o forgive_v and_o forget_v our_o defect_n so_o to_o crown_v his_o own_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o by_o these_o large_a promise_n and_o performance_n also_o to_o whet_v we_o unto_o perfection_n in_o this_o life_n though_o indeed_o we_o can_v never_o here_o attain_v thereto_o now_o the_o mayor_n be_v thus_o expound_v and_o these_o word_n to_o keep_v christ_n saying_n be_v take_v in_o this_o sense_n in_o the_o minor_a or_o assumption_n we_o do_v not_o deny_v the_o minor_a as_o untrue_a because_o christ_n say_v of_o his_o apostle_n john_n 17._o they_o have_v keep_v thy_o word_n and_o all_o that_o they_o have_v and_o do_v in_o sort_n as_o before_o be_v express_v embrace_n and_o hold_v fast_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n keep_v faith_n and_o a_o good_a conscience_n as_o the_o scripture_n say_v may_v right_o be_v term_v in_o their_o measure_n to_o keep_v christ_n say_n though_o he_o will_v not_o or_o dare_v not_o affirm_v they_o do_v it_o so_o well_o and_o in_o such_o a_o large_a measure_n as_o the_o apostle_n do_v 7_o another_o argument_n they_o frame_v as_o follow_v he_o that_o by_o the_o gospel_n can_v know_v whether_o we_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v touch_v justification_n or_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n towards_o he_o or_o concern_v salvation_n for_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n require_v repentance_n of_o us._n but_o no_o man_n by_o the_o gospel_n can_v tell_v whether_o he_o have_v sufficient_a repentance_n yea_o or_o no_o therefore_o no_o man_n no_o not_o by_o the_o gospel_n know_v or_o can_v know_v concern_v god_n grace_n towards_o he_o &_o his_o own_o salvation_n there_o be_v many_o thing_n in_o the_o maior_fw-la proposition_n that_o have_v need_n of_o explanation_n first_o that_o word_n of_o sufficient_a repentance_n be_v not_o only_o ambiguous_a and_o doubtful_a but_o full_a of_o unsoundnesse_n as_o though_o forsooth_o our_o justification_n before_o god_n or_o reconciliation_n with_o he_o stand_v upon_o the_o dignity_n sufficiency_n and_o merit_n of_o our_o repentance_n that_o be_v of_o our_o contrition_n faith_n and_o new_a obedience_n whereas_o we_o know_v it_o depend_v not_o upon_o all_o or_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n but_o upon_o the_o absolute_a obedience_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n which_o as_o it_o be_v sufficient_a indeed_o to_o take_v away_o all_o sin_n so_o it_o be_v much_o more_o powerful_a to_o supply_v the_o defect_n of_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n or_o as_o though_o again_o we_o can_v sufficient_o and_o enough_o sorrow_n for_o our_o sin_n whereas_o if_o we_o weigh_v not_o only_o all_o our_o sin_n but_o any_o of_o they_o in_o it_o own_o nature_n and_o according_a to_o the_o grievous_a effect_n it_o bring_v forth_o or_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n of_o god_n against_o we_o for_o the_o same_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o our_o conscience_n and_o in_o truth_n before_o god_n that_o though_o we_o will_v or_o can_v do_v nothing_o else_o all_o the_o day_n of_o our_o life_n but_o repent_v we_o of_o that_o one_o yet_o we_o can_v not_o sufficient_o perform_v it_o therefore_o or_o as_o though_o we_o have_v some_o sufficiency_n in_o ourselves_o to_o all_o or_o any_o good_a thing_n whereas_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o in_o plain_a &_o evident_a term_n that_o we_o be_v not_o sufficient_a of_o ourselves_o as_o of_o ourselves_o to_o think_v any_o thing_n much_o less_o sufficient_o to_o repent_v but_o that_o all_o our_o sufficiency_n be_v of_o god_n who_o work_v in_o we_o both_o the_o will_n and_o the_o deed_n according_a to_o his_o good_a pleasure_n secondlie_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n affirm_v that_o unless_o a_o man_n have_v sufficient_a repentance_n for_o his_o sin_n he_o can_v be_v assure_v of_o justification_n etc._n etc._n we_o answer_v that_o be_v false_a for_o though_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o be_v want_v in_o himself_o he_o can_v be_v assure_v yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o that_o which_o for_o he_o be_v supply_v by_o another_o and_o accept_v of_o he_o to_o who_o that_o supply_n be_v due_a he_o may_v conceive_v comfort_n and_o certainty_n also_o for_o even_o as_o when_o the_o debt_n that_o a_o man_n owe_v be_v satisfy_v by_o his_o brother_n &_o the_o party_n to_o who_o it_o be_v due_a acknowledge_v himself_o content_v and_o pay_v he_o that_o ought_v the_o debt_n need_v not_o doubt_n much_o less_o distrust_n so_o be_v the_o case_n between_o god_n and_o we_o through_o the_o death_n &_o obedience_n of_o christ_n his_o son_n &_o our_o elder_a brother_n for_o god_n confess_v contentment_n and_o acknowledge_v satisfaction_n when_o he_o say_v this_o be_v my_o wellbe_n love_v son_n in_o who_o i_o be_o well_o please_v &c_n &c_n and_o christ_n have_v pay_v the_o debt_n because_o he_o have_v put_v out_o the_o hand_n writing_n of_o ordinance_n that_o be_v against_o we_o which_o be_v contrary_a to_o we_o he_o even_o take_v it_o out_o of_o the_o way_n and_o fasten_v it_o upon_o the_o cross_n and_o have_v spoil_v principality_n and_o power_n and_o have_v make_v a_o show_v of_o they_o open_o and_o have_v triumph_v over_o they_o in_o the_o same_o cross_n and_o why_o then_o shall_v we_o distrust_v or_o doubt_n unless_o we_o will_v suspect_v the_o suffiencie_n of_o christ_n obedience_n or_o the_o absolutenes_n of_o god_n work_v in_o give_v he_o to_o the_o death_n for_o we_o all_o three_o this_o be_v faulty_a in_o the_o mayor_n that_o it_o make_v it_o a_o principal_a part_n of_o the_o office_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o certify_v man_n heart_n of_o repentance_n whereas_o the_o chief_a duty_n of_o the_o gospel_n be_v to_o publish_v forgiveness_n of_o sin_n and_o by_o consequent_a eternal_a life_n also_o for_o where_o the_o first_o be_v the_o latter_a can_v choose_v but_o follow_v in_o the_o name_n and_o obedience_n of_o jesus_n christ_n and_o though_o we_o will_v not_o or_o can_v deny_v but_o that_o repentance_n be_v a_o part_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o join_v with_o the_o remission_n of_o sin_n yet_o be_v not_o therefore_o annex_v thereunto_o that_o in_o the_o worthiness_n or_o suffiencie_n of_o it_o we_o may_v merit_v assurance_n but_o that_o in_o the_o have_v of_o it_o it_o may_v pledge_v up_o in_o our_o heart_n the_o forgiveness_n of_o all_o our_o transgression_n and_o yet_o not_o as_o though_o it_o be_v of_o ourselves_o though_o it_o be_v in_o ourselves_o but_o as_o it_o be_v god_n work_n in_o we_o he_o give_v this_o glory_n to_o his_o own_o work_n to_o testify_v this_o favour_n unto_o our_o heart_n of_o reconciliation_n and_o peace_n indeed_o if_o repentance_n be_v of_o and_o from_o man_n it_o be_v somewhat_o that_o they_o say_v but_o be_v simple_o and_o only_o from_o god_n who_o if_o he_o do_v not_o effectual_o batter_v man_n stony_a and_o hard_a heart_n they_o can_v return_v unto_o he_o they_o can_v think_v or_o speak_v thus_o but_o with_o great_a sin_n against_o god_n and_o their_o own_o soul_n last_o concern_v the_o confirmation_n of_o the_o proposition_n in_o these_o word_n for_o god_n in_o the_o gospel_n require_v repentance_n of_o we_o we_o confess_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o sentence_n but_o not_o in_o their_o sense_n for_o that_o god_n demand_v it_o no_o man_n i_o think_v will_v deny_v because_o every_o where_o almost_o it_o be_v say_v repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n but_o he_o that_o require_v it_o for_o these_o end_n &_o purpose_n that_o these_o man_n imagine_v as_o namely_o that_o it_o shall_v puff_n we_o up_o in_o pride_n and_o presumption_n of_o merit_n that_o we_o shall_v think_v we_o have_v it_o of_o ourselves_o and_o so_o therein_o assure_v our_o heart_n that_o be_v most_o false_a but_o rather_o because_o it_o come_v from_o
god_n and_o be_v the_o work_n of_o his_o own_o grace_n in_o we_o and_o appoint_v indeed_o among_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n notwithstanding_o the_o weakness_n and_o want_n of_o it_o which_o be_v from_o ourselves_o &_o not_o from_o god_n or_o his_o work_n in_o we_o and_o therefore_o may_v indeed_o comfort_v we_o for_o as_o this_o be_v a_o sure_a rule_n that_o whatsoever_o be_v of_o or_o from_o ourselves_o may_v just_o discourage_v we_o and_o cause_v we_o to_o hang_v down_o our_o head_n for_o shame_n and_o to_o cast_v down_o our_o heart_n for_o fear_n so_o this_o be_v as_o certain_a that_o whatsoever_o be_v from_o god_n may_v and_o aught_o as_o in_o and_o of_o itself_o special_o when_o it_o be_v reverent_o receive_v and_o right_o use_v notwithstanding_o there_o be_v imperfection_n in_o they_o that_o take_v and_o use_v the_o same_o yield_v unto_o we_o singular_a consolation_n hitherto_o concern_v the_o mayor_n now_o for_o the_o minor_a whereunto_o we_o answer_v that_o in_o the_o gospel_n the_o measure_n of_o repentance_n that_o be_v of_o contrition_n faith_n and_o new_a obedience_n be_v not_o prescribe_v my_o meaning_n be_v that_o there_o be_v not_o show_v how_o great_a or_o how_o much_o our_o repentance_n shall_v be_v but_o rather_o the_o thing_n itself_o in_o itself_o &_o the_o soundness_n of_o it_o exact_v or_o require_v so_o that_o we_o may_v safe_o say_v not_o the_o quantity_n of_o it_o as_o whether_o it_o be_v little_a or_o great_a suffice_v but_o the_o soundness_n &_o truth_n of_o it_o suffice_v though_o not_o before_o god_n neither_o for_o there_o be_v want_n in_o we_o &_o our_o good_a work_n that_o way_n yet_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o and_o our_o own_o assurance_n for_o though_o it_o be_v not_o sufficient_a for_o our_o purpose_n or_o before_o god_n yet_o it_o may_v suffice_v for_o another_o and_z as_o in_o regard_n of_o ourselves_o for_o even_o as_o not_o the_o quantity_n so_o much_o as_o the_o quality_n of_o faith_n in_o the_o truth_n and_o steadfastness_n of_o it_o be_v it_o that_o in_o some_o sort_n commend_v we_o to_o god_n but_o special_o minister_v much_o comfort_n to_o our_o own_o conscience_n and_o as_o not_o long_o and_o many_o prayer_n but_o short_a and_o sweet_a as_o we_o may_v say_v yea_o so_o do_v we_o say_v and_o believe_v also_o touch_v all_o other_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o namely_o our_o repentance_n and_o let_v this_o suffice_v for_o this_o point_n 8_o their_a eight_o argument_n they_o make_v thus_o pride_n be_v a_o vice_n displease_v god_n on_o the_o other_o side_n humility_n and_o modesty_n be_v a_o virtue_n that_o he_o take_v delight_n in_o but_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n and_o be_v assure_v of_o eternal_a salvation_n be_v a_o point_n of_o arrogancy_n as_o again_o to_o doubt_v whether_o he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n a_o token_n of_o modesty_n and_o humility_n therefore_o for_o a_o man_n to_o say_v that_o he_o be_v sure_a he_o be_v in_o god_n favour_n be_v a_o soul_n fault_n and_o to_o doubt_v of_o it_o be_v a_o goodly_a virtue_n the_o mayor_n of_o this_o proposition_n be_v as_o clear_a as_o possible_a can_v be_v and_o to_o be_v prove_v by_o many_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n and_o particular_o by_o this_o god_n resist_v the_o proud_a and_o give_v grace_n to_o the_o humble_a and_o therefore_o we_o say_v nothing_o to_o it_o but_o willing_o yield_v and_o submit_v ourselves_o to_o the_o truth_n thereof_o but_o the_o minor_a be_v corrupt_a and_o false_a and_o therefore_o we_o deny_v it_o in_o both_o the_o part_n or_o proposition_n of_o it_o for_o it_o be_v not_o arrogancy_n to_o be_v assure_v general_o of_o god_n favour_n for_o all_o mercy_n and_o particular_o of_o his_o grace_n concern_v eternal_a salvation_n since_o god_n himself_o for_o the_o better_a uphold_v of_o our_o heart_n and_o hope_n that_o way_n have_v be_v please_v to_o give_v unto_o we_o many_o gracious_a both_o prop_n and_o promise_n in_o his_o word_n which_o also_o in_o good_a time_n he_o will_v perform_v unto_o we_o as_o he_o have_v do_v to_o many_o of_o his_o faithful_a servant_n who_o have_v go_v before_o we_o in_o the_o flesh_n and_o in_o the_o faith_n for_o this_o and_o not_o that_o be_v arrogancy_n indeed_o to_o take_v that_o which_o do_v not_o belong_v unto_o we_o or_o to_o presume_v of_o this_o or_o that_o which_o we_o have_v not_o and_o yet_o deceive_v in_o our_o own_o heart_n imagine_v we_o have_v it_o or_o else_o have_v it_o to_o be_v puff_v up_o with_o a_o conceit_n of_o have_v more_o than_o we_o enjoy_v or_o else_o enjoy_v it_o to_o be_v proud_a of_o it_o either_o as_o though_o we_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o or_o as_o though_o god_n have_v give_v it_o we_o to_o that_o end_n to_o make_v we_o swell_v over_o other_o but_o to_o assure_v ourselves_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o of_o eternal_a life_n be_v a_o doctrine_n that_o god_n have_v deliver_v in_o his_o word_n for_o the_o good_a and_o stay_n of_o his_o own_o people_n as_o we_o have_v already_o hear_v heretofore_o and_o shall_v again_o hereafter_o hear_v it_o prove_v more_o at_o large_a and_o therefore_o we_o can_v not_o arrogate_v or_o take_v any_o more_o unto_o ourselves_o then_o that_o that_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o free_a favour_n of_o god_n belong_v unto_o we_o and_o presume_v here_o we_o can_v or_o be_v proud_a whether_o we_o have_v it_o or_o have_v not_o for_o it_o be_v madness_n to_o be_v lift_v up_o with_o that_o we_o have_v not_o and_o since_o we_o have_v it_o not_o of_o ourselves_o but_o from_o another_o we_o may_v say_v as_o the_o apostle_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o that_o ihou_fw-mi have_v not_o receive_v &_o if_o thou_o have_v receive_v it_o why_o reioyc_a thou_o as_o though_o thou_o have_v not_o receive_v it_o and_o again_o we_o know_v god_n give_v no_o grace_n to_o any_o evil_a end_n howesoever_o man_n in_o his_o own_o corruption_n and_o satan_n in_o his_o malice_n against_o he_o abuse_v they_o many_o time_n thereto_o but_o as_o the_o grace_n themselves_o be_v good_a so_o both_o he_o in_o his_o purpose_n do_v and_o we_o in_o our_o practice_n ought_v to_o aim_v at_o good_a end_n and_o effect_n that_o so_o the_o one_o answer_v the_o other_o he_o may_v have_v glory_n other_o man_n good_a and_o ourselves_o comfort_n on_o the_o other_o side_n it_o be_v not_o humility_n to_o doubt_v of_o god_n favour_n but_o distrustfulnes_n or_o doubt_v rather_o for_o humility_n respect_v not_o god_n or_o not_o reach_v unto_o he_o though_o it_o be_v acceptable_a in_o his_o eye_n as_o other_o good_a thing_n be_v but_o concern_v man_n who_o when_o he_o consider_v either_o himself_o his_o sin_n and_o misery_n thereby_o or_o else_o god_n in_o his_o majesty_n might_n justice_n etc._n etc._n as_o a_o sharp_a revenger_n of_o the_o same_o have_v just_a occasion_n to_o be_v throw_v down_o be_v a_o holy_a &_o bless_a virgin_n whereas_o distrustfulness_n or_o doubt_v arise_v from_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o a_o imagination_n touch_v the_o height_n or_o heinousnes_n of_o our_o iniquity_n or_o ignorance_n of_o god_n divine_a nature_n and_o holy_a word_n as_o though_o he_o can_v not_o or_o will_v not_o forgive_v we_o be_v a_o foul_a vice_n because_o it_o dishonour_v god_n in_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o mercy_n and_o add_v affliction_n unto_o a_o fearful_a and_o distress_a soul_n and_o both_o these_o point_v i_o think_v we_o may_v see_v plain_a by_o and_o earthly_a comparison_n for_o as_o when_o a_o great_a prince_n or_o person_n that_o both_o have_v largeness_n of_o power_n and_o soundness_n of_o good_a will_n shall_v promise_v we_o much_o and_o will_v we_o in_o the_o word_n of_o a_o prince_n to_o assure_v ourselves_o and_o be_v bold_a then_o to_o doubt_n be_v folly_n in_o ourselves_o and_o discredit_v to_o the_o person_n that_o offer_v &_o will_v perform_v such_o singular_a favour_n so_o be_v it_o in_o this_o behalf_n between_o we_o and_o god_n who_o power_n we_o can_v doubt_v of_o not_o only_o because_o it_o be_v absolute_a and_o infinite_a but_o also_o because_o he_o have_v effectual_o in_o all_o age_n and_o to_o every_o person_n perform_v whatsoever_o he_o have_v faithful_o promise_v and_o who_o good_a will_v we_o may_v not_o call_v into_o question_n he_o have_v give_v we_o so_o many_o assurance_n thereof_o as_o his_o sweet_a promise_n the_o death_n of_o his_o son_n the_o pledge_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o many_o particular_a grace_n both_o outward_a and_o inward_a as_o he_o have_v be_v please_v to_o bestow_v upon_o us._n so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v it_o be_v not_o pride_n but_o christian_a humility_n not_o only_o to_o think_v or_o speak_v low_o of_o but_o as_o it_o be_v to_o distrust_v yea_o
faith_n but_o unto_o knowledge_n that_o be_v to_o say_v he_o speak_v not_o here_o of_o the_o assuredness_n of_o faith_n concern_v which_o alone_a we_o reason_n in_o this_o place_n or_o question_n but_o of_o the_o certainty_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v another_o matter_n then_o the_o certainty_n of_o faith_n and_o differ_v from_o it_o because_o only_o the_o elect_a have_v this_o and_o many_o beside_o they_o have_v that_o other_o signify_v that_o we_o be_v not_o sure_a of_o perseverance_n and_o therefore_o not_o of_o salvation_n neither_o to_o wit_n by_o the_o certainty_n of_o our_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o not_o deny_v our_o assurance_n of_o it_o by_o the_o certainty_n of_o faith_n and_o this_o we_o may_v perceive_v even_o out_o of_o augustine_n himself_o and_o so_o make_v he_o his_o own_o best_a expositour_n for_o first_o go_v about_o to_o prove_v that_o which_o he_o say_v namely_o that_o saint_n and_o holy_a man_n be_v not_o always_o assure_v of_o their_o perseverance_n he_o add_v and_o say_v who_o know_v and_o not_o who_o believe_v unless_o by_o some_o special_a revelation_n he_o be_v assure_v thereof_o etc._n etc._n sith_o therefore_o he_o mean_v that_o man_n be_v sometime_o find_v uncertain_a concern_v their_o own_o perseverance_n because_o no_o man_n know_v that_o he_o shall_v perseveare_a in_o his_o proceed_n in_o righteousness_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o he_o mean_v this_o his_o speech_n of_o that_o uncertainty_n and_o of_o that_o ignorance_n which_o be_v opposite_a to_o knowledge_n and_o not_o of_o that_o which_o be_v opposite_a to_o faith_n and_o differ_v as_o much_o one_o of_o they_o from_o another_o as_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n do_v that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o he_o affirm_v of_o the_o saint_n that_o they_o know_v not_o that_o they_o shall_v persevere_v in_o the_o very_a action_n and_o go_v forward_o of_o justice_n and_o not_o that_o they_o believe_v it_o not_o or_o ought_v not_o to_o believe_v it_o that_o by_o god_n grace_n through_o christ_n they_o shall_v be_v save_v and_o uphold_v both_o to_o continue_v unto_o the_o end_n and_o so_o persevere_v to_o depart_v out_o of_o this_o life_n yea_o he_o will_v rather_o have_v man_n to_o believe_v this_o for_o he_o add_v but_o he_o will_v make_v we_o continue_v even_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o our_o life_n in_o himself_o to_o who_o we_o daily_o say_v lead_v we_o not_o into_o temptation_n second_o when_o he_o say_v who_o know_v whether_o he_o shall_v continue_v in_o the_o action_n and_o proceed_n of_o righteousness_n he_o present_o adjoin_v unless_o he_o be_v by_o some_o that_o begin_v not_o to_o stagger_v and_o doubt_v and_o not_o of_o that_o which_o spring_v from_o distrust_n or_o doubt_v of_o the_o strength_n preservation_n and_o uphold_v of_o god_n for_o concern_v that_o he_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v continual_o but_o they_o yet_o urge_v this_o further_a &_o say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o antithesis_fw-la or_o opposition_n between_o the_o reward_n of_o perseverance_n and_o the_o gift_n or_o grace_n of_o perseverance_n itself_o and_o that_o therefore_o we_o must_v understand_v as_o in_o the_o former_a assurance_n of_o faith_n so_o in_o the_o latter_a uncertainty_n of_o faith_n we_o answer_v neither_o will_n we_o deny_v but_o that_o there_o be_v a_o antithesis_fw-la or_o opposition_n yea_o and_o that_o it_o be_v of_o certainty_n and_o uncerten_o but_o not_o of_o the_o measure_n of_o certainty_n and_o uncertainty_n for_o still_o we_o stand_v upon_o that_o that_o he_o mean_v it_o of_o such_o uncertainty_n as_o be_v oppose_v against_o speak_v of_o must_v be_v understand_v diverse_o and_o special_o concern_v the_o reward_n of_o perseverance_n which_o that_o it_o depend_v of_o god_n only_o &_o not_o of_o any_o endeavour_n of_o we_o be_v without_o all_o question_n for_o that_o god_n shall_v render_v unto_o they_o that_o persevere_v the_o reward_n of_o perseverance_n he_o require_v nothing_o of_o our_o endeavour_n study_n care_n etc._n etc._n but_o that_o as_o god_n himself_o have_v promise_v unto_o they_o so_o he_o do_v assure_o perform_v that_o reward_n and_o yet_o because_o to_o their_o good_a perseverance_n their_o be_v require_v also_o their_o endeavour_n and_o care_n which_o as_o it_o be_v in_o and_o of_o themselves_o very_o infirm_a and_o doubtful_a they_o can_v but_o sometime_o stand_v in_o fear_n of_o the_o perseverance_n and_o hold_v out_o of_o this_o their_o study_n and_o care_n so_o then_o he_o that_o in_o this_o question_n can_v put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o god_n &_o man_n and_o betwixt_o that_o regard_n of_o their_o own_o indignity_n or_o unworthiness_n because_o we_o be_v worthy_a to_o obtain_v or_o have_v that_o which_o god_n have_v promise_v for_o it_o may_v so_o fall_v out_o that_o because_o a_o man_n have_v fail_v in_o the_o condition_n annex_v to_o god_n promise_n he_o may_v right_o doubt_v whether_o he_o shall_v have_v that_o which_o god_n have_v promise_v that_o be_v to_o say_v man_n shall_v not_o doubt_v whether_o god_n will_v fail_v in_o accomplish_v of_o his_o grace_n and_o promise_v make_v unto_o we_o but_o lest_o we_o perform_v not_o the_o condition_n adjoin_v utter_o and_o altogether_o unworthy_a of_o all_o or_o any_o good_a thing_n from_o god_n no_o godly_a man_n i_o think_v will_v deny_v nay_o and_o if_o it_o will_v pleasure_v our_o adversasary_n we_o itself_o and_o the_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n may_v appear_v by_o two_o place_n of_o scripture_n the_o 1._o be_v out_o of_o psal_n 51._o where_o the_o prophet_n pray_v that_o god_n will_v not_o take_v his_o holy_a spirit_n from_o he_o which_o if_o it_o have_v be_v quite_o lose_v by_o his_o former_a transgression_n he_o can_v not_o have_v pray_v for_o because_o it_o be_v go_v before_o but_o
