his_o adversary_n as_o follow_v but_o i_o conceive_v he_o be_v deceive_v with_o the_o semblance_n of_o truth_n and_o mistake_n through_o a_o show_n of_o false_a virtue_n whilst_o he_o think_v that_o those_o good_a endowment_n which_o can_v be_v have_v but_o by_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n be_v find_v even_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o wicked_a therefore_o to_o wit_n because_o many_o of_o they_o be_v follower_n of_o righteousness_n temperance_n continence_n and_o kindness_n all_o which_o they_o have_v not_o in_o vain_a nor_o unprofitable_o and_o much_o honour_n and_o glory_n do_v they_o in_o this_o life_n obtain_v by_o they_o but_o because_o in_o those_o pursuance_n they_o serve_v not_o god_n but_o the_o devil_n though_o they_o have_v a_o temporal_a reward_n of_o vain_a glory_n yet_o do_v they_o not_o belong_v to_o the_o truth_n of_o those_o bless_a virtue_n and_o it_o be_v most_o manifest_a that_o in_o the_o mind_n of_o the_o wicked_a no_o virtue_n dwell_v but_o all_o their_o work_n be_v unclean_a and_o pollute_v they_o have_v not_o spiritual_a but_o natural_a not_o heavenly_a but_o earthly_a not_o christian_n but_o devilish_a wisdom_n not_o from_o the_o father_n of_o light_n but_o from_o the_o prince_n of_o darkness_n whilst_o by_o those_o very_a thing_n which_o they_o can_v not_o have_v but_o by_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n they_o be_v bring_v into_o subjection_n to_o he_o creation_n if_o none_o can_v come_v unto_o christ_n except_o draw_v of_o the_o father_n if_o not_o of_o work_n that_o we_o have_v do_v but_o of_o his_o own_o grace_n if_o not_o of_o he_o that_o will_v nor_o of_o he_o that_o run_v but_o of_o god_n who_o show_v mercy_n if_o a_o call_n out_o of_o darkness_n if_o translate_n from_o the_o power_n of_o darkness_n a_o take_v away_o the_o heart_n of_o stone_n and_o giving_z aâ—_n heart_n of_o flesh_n then_o as_o former_o but_o the_o former_a be_v true_a therefore_o the_o latter_a further_a consideration_n of_o the_o falsehood_n of_o this_o doctrine_n we_o shall_v have_v in_o that_o which_o follow_v show_v the_o pelagianism_n of_o it_o chap._n vi_o now_o for_o the_o pelagianism_n of_o this_o doctrine_n 1_o suppose_v it_o acknowledge_v no_o supernatural_a grace_n and_o therefore_o no_o grace_n but_o only_o toy_v with_o the_o word_n grace_n ascribe_v save_v virtue_n and_o operation_n to_o nature_n and_o a_o assistance_n from_o god_n proportion_v and_o attemper_v to_o the_o heedful_a exercise_n and_o improvement_n of_o natural_a ability_n then_o be_v it_o evident_o pelagian_a and_o that_o of_o the_o first_o stamp_n but_o if_o this_o be_v not_o the_o spirit_n of_o this_o doctrine_n those_o conclusion_n here_o lay_v down_o be_v very_o close_o express_v 1_o that_o man_n act_n beneath_o themselves_o and_o here_o he_o speak_v choke_v suppress_v and_o smother_v they_o if_o they_o remain_v in_o the_o snare_n of_o unbelief_n 2_o that_o man_n who_o act_n and_o quit_v themselves_o according_a to_o the_o true_a principle_n of_o that_o reason_n which_o god_n have_v plant_v in_o they_o can_v but_o believe_v and_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o precious_a faith_n of_o the_o gospel_n let_v we_o now_o add_v a_o further_a explication_n in_o his_o own_o word_n present_o after_o and_o this_o will_v yet_o more_o clear_o appear_v to_o have_v be_v his_o meaning_n which_o we_o here_o suppose_v his_o word_n be_v as_o follow_v that_o about_o the_o efficacy_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n vouchsafe_v unto_o man_n there_o be_v a_o great_a abuse_n of_o the_o word_n natural_a and_o so_o of_o the_o word_n supernatural_a a_o word_n not_o find_v in_o the_o scripture_n either_o formal_o or_o virtual_o the_o gross_a falsehood_n whereof_o we_o shall_v see_v in_o due_a place_n and_o that_o the_o scripture_n know_v not_o the_o word_n natural_a in_o any_o such_o sense_n wherein_o it_o shall_v distinguish_v the_o unregenerate_a state_n of_o a_o man_n from_o the_o regenerate_a as_o false_a as_o the_o former_a as_o in_o due_a time_n shall_v be_v demonstrate_v now_o this_o commentary_n of_o his_o own_o be_v so_o manifest_a for_o the_o sense_n we_o here_o suppose_v as_o need_v no_o insist_v upon_o for_o if_o the_o efficacy_n of_o grace_n be_v not_o supernatural_a than_o neither_o be_v grace_n itself_o as_o the_o principle_n nor_o any_o effect_n of_o grace_n as_o to_o believe_v repent_v etc._n etc._n supernatural_a for_o the_o principle_n operation_n and_o effect_n be_v all_o of_o one_o kind_n natural_a or_o supernatural_a and_o so_o grace_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o natural_a endowment_n and_o improvement_n but_o then_o what_o shall_v be_v his_o meaning_n afterward_o in_o his_o explication_n of_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n where_o he_o speak_v thus_o that_o in_o case_n man_n will_v stir_v up_o and_o lay_v out_o themselves_o according_o in_o the_o improvement_n of_o such_o ability_n and_o gift_n as_o shall_v from_o time_n to_o time_n be_v vouchsafe_v to_o they_o they_o may_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o bounty_n and_o gracious_a decree_n of_o god_n in_o that_o behalf_n attain_v and_o receive_v from_o god_n what_o proportion_n and_o measure_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n they_o can_v desire_v i_o answer_v the_o work_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o grace_n upon_o their_o heart_n if_o it_o be_v supernatural_a he_o contradict_v himself_o who_o will_v not_o allow_v that_o word_n either_o formal_o or_o virtual_o about_o the_o efficacy_n of_o grace_n if_o he_o do_v not_o contradict_v himself_o this_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n must_v be_v nothing_o slse_o but_o such_o a_o influx_n as_o be_v attemper_v and_o proportion_v to_o man_n natural_a act_n and_o therefore_o natural_a but_o this_o be_v the_o frequent_a manner_n of_o his_o great_a apostle_n pelagius_n to_o play_v fast_o and_o loose_a at_o every_o turn_n with_o the_o word_n grace_n and_o nature_n i_o much_o suspect_v that_o very_a doctrine_n of_o pelagius_n which_o austin_n lay_v down_o in_o his_o own_o descend_v from_o the_o fountain_n of_o free_a will_n therefore_o in_o the_o will_n and_o in_o the_o good_a work_n the_o praise_n be_v of_o man_n yea_o both_o of_o man_n and_o god_n who_o have_v give_v to_o he_o the_o possibility_n of_o the_o will_n itself_o and_o of_o the_o work_n and_o who_o always_o help_v that_o possibility_n itself_o with_o the_o aid_n of_o his_o grace_n but_o that_o man_n may_v be_v able_a to_o will_v good_a and_o to_o finish_v it_o this_o be_v only_o of_o god_n see_v now_o what_o austin_n here_o advertise_v concern_v pelagius_n his_o concession_n of_o grace_n which_o how_o right_o it_o suit_v master_n goodwin_n let_v the_o reader_n judge_n whensoever_o say_v he_o we_o hear_v that_o he_o confess_v the_o aid_n of_o divine_a grace_n we_o ought_v to_o know_v that_o he_o neither_o believe_v our_o will_n nor_o our_o action_n to_o be_v help_v hereby_o but_o only_o the_o possibility_n of_o the_o will_n and_o work_v which_o alone_o of_o these_o three_o he_o affirm_v that_o we_o have_v of_o god_n and_o this_o in_o nature_n as_o be_v manifest_a chap._n vii_o 2._o suppose_v it_o acknowledge_v no_o habitual_a grace_n upon_o the_o will_n renew_v it_o nor_o effectual_a act_n and_o determine_v it_o but_o all_o the_o assistance_n of_o grace_n acknowledge_v be_v it_o natural_a or_o supernatural_a be_v only_o for_o enlighten_v the_o understanding_n and_o exciting_a this_o save_a grace_n by_o the_o help_n of_o initial_a grace_n let_v mr._n goodwin_n doctrine_n be_v consider_v where_o he_o deny_v the_o word_n supernatural_a as_o former_o and_o his_o conclusion_n upon_o which_o we_o be_v all_o this_o while_n together_o with_o his_o explication_n of_o the_o parable_n of_o the_o talent_n and_o see_v wherein_o he_o differ_v from_o these_o here_o describe_v
