in_o jerusalem_n for_o the_o better_a understanding_n of_o this_o place_n note_n that_o the_o destruction_n which_o the_o lord_n threaten_v against_o those_o which_o go_v down_o to_o egypt_n for_o strength_n the_o lord_n bring_v upon_o those_o man_n by_o the_o assyrian_n who_o he_o bring_v so_o sudden_o upon_o they_o as_o that_o their_o destruction_n be_v say_v to_o have_v come_v upon_o they_o sudden_o at_o a_o instant_n vers_fw-la 13._o and_o so_o be_v sudden_o surprise_v and_o unprovided_a they_o become_v a_o prey_n to_o the_o sword_n of_o their_o enemy_n but_o though_o the_o lord_n intend_v to_o bring_v this_o assyrian_n against_o jerusalem_n as_o well_o as_o against_o other_o part_n and_o city_n of_o judah_n yet_o he_o bring_v they_o not_o so_o sudden_o against_o she_o as_o against_o other_o city_n and_o place_n for_o after_o the_o assyrian_n come_v and_o enter_v into_o judah_n and_o encamp_v against_o the_o fence_a city_n thereof_o the_o man_n of_o jerusalem_n have_v time_n to_o take_v counsel_n and_o to_o fortify_v their_o city_n and_o to_o hunble_a themselves_o and_o in_o a_o solemn_a manner_n to_o commend_v themselves_o to_o god_n protection_n and_o rely_v upon_o he_o for_o safety_n before_o the_o assyrian_n pitch_v against_o she_o 2_o chron._n cap._n 32._o ver_fw-la 1_o 2_o 3_o 4_o 5_o 6_o 7_o 8._o by_o which_o mean_v they_o be_v able_a to_o hold_v out_o against_o the_o assyrian_n until_o the_o assyrian_n themselves_o be_v destroy_v therefore_o because_o the_o lord_n bring_v not_o the_o assyrian_n so_o soon_o against_o the_o man_n of_o jerusalem_n as_o he_o do_v against_o other_o the_o man_n of_o judah_n but_o staid_a until_o the_o man_n of_o jerusalem_n have_v exceed_o well_o fortify_v their_o city_n and_o have_v humble_v themselves_o and_o in_o a_o solemn_a manner_n commit_v themselves_o to_o the_o lord_n protection_n the_o lord_n be_v say_v here_o to_o wait_v and_o therefore_o etc._n etc._n note_v that_o and_o be_v put_v here_o for_o yet_o notwithstanding_o for_o he_o oppose_v here_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o faithful_a in_o jerusalem_n to_o the_o condition_n of_o those_o which_o he_o hitherto_o speak_v of_o will_v the_o lord_n wait_v i._o e._n will_v the_o lord_n stay_v till_o you_o have_v fortify_v your_o city_n and_o put_v yourselves_o in_o a_o solemn_a manner_n under_o his_o protection_n before_o he_o bring_v the_o assyrian_n against_o you_o to_o wait_v be_v put_v here_o for_o to_o stay_v or_o to_o tarry_v because_o they_o use_v to_o stay_v and_o tarry_v which_o use_v to_o wait_v for_o any_o one_o that_o he_o may_v be_v gracious_a unto_o you_o i._o e._n that_o he_o may_v show_v favour_n unto_o you_o for_o it_o be_v god_n favour_n and_o mercy_n to_o keep_v off_o the_o assyrian_n from_o the_o man_n of_o jerusalem_n till_o they_o have_v fortify_v their_o city_n and_o solemn_o commit_v themselves_o to_o the_o lord_n protection_n otherwise_o they_o may_v have_v be_v destroy_v by_o the_o assyrian_n as_o well_o as_o other_o the_o man_n of_o judah_n will_v he_o be_v exalt_v i._o e._n will_v he_o defer_v his_o punishment_n intend_v against_o you_o that_o be_v he_o will_v defer_v the_o bring_n of_o the_o assyrian_n against_o you_o etc._n etc._n this_o sense_n this_o place_n require_v for_o this_o be_v a_o repetition_n of_o the_o former_a sentence_n but_o how_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d to_o be_v exalt_v shall_v come_v to_o signify_v to_o defer_v a_o punishment_n be_v a_o question_n some_o think_v that_o the_o prophet_n allude_v to_o a_o man_n correct_v his_o son_n or_o his_o servant_n with_o a_o rod_n who_o stretch_v out_o his_o arm_n and_o lift_v up_o his_o whole_a body_n and_o stand_v on_o tiptoe_n that_o he_o may_v fetch_v the_o great_a stroke_n but_o the_o be_v take_v say_v they_o for_o to_o defer_v a_o punishment_n or_o to_o be_v long_o before_o he_o strike_v by_o a_o metaphor_n other_o say_v thus_o when_o god_n be_v about_o to_o punish_v he_o be_v say_v to_o come_v out_o of_o his_o place_n which_o be_v heaven_n as_o cap._n 26.21_o and_o mic._n 1.3_o that_o therefore_o he_o may_v punish_v this_o people_n he_o come_v as_o it_o be_v out_o of_o heaven_n but_o because_o he_o will_v not_o then_o punish_v they_o but_o spare_v they_o a_o little_a long_o he_o return_v on_o high_a into_o heaven_n to_o his_o place_n again_o hence_o to_o be_v for_o it_o as_o be_v the_o cause_n thereof_o they_o escape_v into_o the_o land_n of_o armenia_n this_o their_o escape_n be_v for_o fear_n lest_o they_o shall_v be_v punish_v for_o their_o parricide_n isaiah_n chap._n xxxviii_o in_o those_o day_n be_v hezekiah_n sick_a etc._n etc._n hezekiah_n fall_v sick_a of_o this_o disease_n of_o he_o about_o the_o 14_o or_o beginning_n of_o the_o 15_o year_n e._n set_v the_o affair_n of_o thy_o house_n in_o order_n as_o thou_o will_v have_v they_o dispose_v of_o after_o thy_o death_n q._n d._n make_v thou_o thy_o will_n and_o dispose_v of_o thy_o good_n as_o thou_o please_v for_o thou_o shall_v die_v and_o not_o live_v a_o question_n will_v present_o arise_v upon_o these_o word_n why_o hezekiah_n die_v not_o when_o as_o the_o lord_n say_v to_o he_o by_o his_o prophet_n thou_o shall_v die_v and_o not_o live_v the_o answer_n be_v because_o this_o sentence_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v not_o absolute_a but_o conditional_a and_o so_o hezekiah_n take_v it_o as_o be_v evident_a by_o his_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o mercy_n herein_o upon_o which_o prayer_n the_o lord_n restore_v he_o to_o his_o health_n it_o be_v frequent_a with_o god_n to_o promise_v and_o threaten_v in_o term_n which_o seem_v absolute_a but_o include_v a_o condition_n or_o have_v a_o exception_n tacit_o involve_v which_o condition_n or_o exception_n the_o lord_n conceal_v that_o they_o who_o the_o promise_n or_o threat_n concern_v may_v be_v the_o more_o earnest_a with_o the_o lord_n to_o hasten_v his_o promise_n or_o remove_v his_o threat_n 2._o then_o hezekiah_n turn_v his_o face_n towards_o the_o wall_n and_o pray_v etc._n etc._n hezekiah_n turn_v his_o face_n towards_o the_o wall_n as_o he_o lie_v in_o his_o bed_n that_o he_o may_v pray_v to_o god_n with_o the_o more_o intention_n of_o mind_n while_o he_o turn_v his_o face_n from_o those_o which_o stand_v by_o and_o remove_v his_o eye_n from_o distract_n object_n and_o pray_v unto_o the_o lord_n to_o wit_n to_o spare_v his_o life_n 3._o remember_v now_o o_o lord_n i_o beseech_v thou_o how_o i_o have_v walk_v before_o thou_o etc._n etc._n to_o walk_v before_o god_n be_v so_o to_o live_v as_o if_o we_o have_v god_n always_o before_o our_o eye_n and_o they_o that_o so_o live_v strive_v to_o please_v he_o as_o a_o servant_n be_v always_o diligent_a and_o careful_a to_o please_v his_o master_n when_o he_o be_v in_o his_o master_n sight_n in_o truth_n and_o not_o in_o show_n and_o appearance_n only_o with_o a_o perfect_a heart_n with_o a_o heart_n free_a from_o hypocrisy_n have_v do_v that_o here_o note_n second_o that_o when_o they_o do_v make_v mention_n of_o their_o good_a deed_n before_o the_o lord_n they_o do_v it_o for_o the_o most_o part_n when_o they_o be_v in_o trouble_n and_o tribulation_n note_n three_o that_o though_o they_o do_v make_v mention_n of_o their_o good_a deed_n they_o do_v not_o mention_v they_o as_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o what_o they_o pray_v for_o and_o this_o be_v plain_a by_o nehemiah_n who_o when_o he_o have_v in_o the_o five_o and_o six_o chapter_n of_o his_o book_n and_o in_o the_o thirteen_o chapter_n and_o fourteen_o verse_n and_o elsewhere_o entreat_v the_o lord_n that_o he_o will_v remember_v he_o according_a to_o his_o good_a deed_n in_o the_o thirteen_o chapter_n and_o the_o two_o and_o twenty_o verse_n he_o say_v remember_v i_o o_o my_o god_n concern_v this_o also_o and_o spare_v i_o according_a to_o the_o greatness_n of_o thy_o mercy_n note_v fourthly_a that_o the_o reason_n why_o they_o mention_v their_o good_a deed_n at_o such_o time_n be_v first_o that_o they_o may_v the_o more_o incline_v the_o lord_n to_o mercy_n for_o the_o lord_n be_v more_o ready_a to_o show_v mercy_n to_o those_o which_o endeavour_n to_o live_v according_a to_o his_o law_n then_o to_o those_o which_o neglect_v they_o second_o that_o they_o may_v sustain_v themselves_o against_o the_o pusillanimity_n and_o faintheartedness_n which_o may_v assail_v they_o be_v prone_a by_o nature_n thereto_o for_o the_o testimony_n of_o a_o good_a conscience_n produce_v boldness_n towards_o god_n 1_o pet._n 3.21_o but_o beside_o these_o hezekiah_n may_v have_v a_o special_a reason_n to_o move_v he_o to_o mention_v his_o good_a deed_n and_o that_o be_v this_o because_o the_o lord_n make_v a_o promise_n to_o david_n say_v if_o thy_o child_n take_v heed_n to_o their_o way_n to_o walk_v before_o i_o in_o truth_n with_o all_o their_o heart_n and_o with_o all_o their_o soul_n there_o shall_v not_o fail_v thou_o a_o man_n on_o the_o throne_n of_o israel_n 1_o king_n 2.4_o and_o at_o this_o time_n hezekiah_n have_v not_o a_o child_n to_o succeed_v he_o in_o the_o throne_n and_o hezekiah_n weep_v sore_o viz._n because_o god_n have_v say_v unto_o he_o thou_o shall_v die_v and_o not_o live_v v._o 1._o it_o may_v be_v ask_v here_o why_o hezekiah_n shall_v weep_v sore_o to_o hear_v that_o he_o shall_v die_v answ_n a_o general_a reason_n may_v be_v this_o because_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n in_o which_o hezekiah_n live_v the_o hope_n of_o eternal_a life_n be_v not_o so_o great_a as_o it_o be_v under_o the_o gospel_n because_o the_o glory_n to_o come_v be_v not_o so_o full_o reveal_v then_o as_o it_o be_v now_o ephes_n 3.5_o therefore_o be_v death_n more_o fear_v then_o now_o it_o be_v but_o beside_o this_o hezekiah_n may_v have_v many_o particular_a reason_n for_o which_o he_o weep_v at_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o death_n as_o first_o because_o if_o he_o shall_v die_v than_o he_o shall_v leave_v judah_n and_o jerusalem_n under_o the_o pressure_n
