infinite_a patience_n love_n clemency_n and_o bounty_n of_o god_n who_o when_o his_o spouse_n the_o church_n of_o israel_n have_v often_o and_o impudent_o play_v the_o harlot_n and_o for_o her_o whoredom_n be_v divorce_v from_o he_o yet_o he_o do_v not_o according_a to_o the_o just_a custom_n of_o husband_n in_o like_a case_n take_v his_o gift_n and_o rich_a benefit_n from_o she_o which_o he_o have_v bestow_v on_o she_o but_o suffer_v she_o to_o enjoy_v they_o still_o and_o this_o he_o impli_v when_o as_o he_o will_v she_o to_o repent_v lest_o he_o shall_v spoil_v she_o note_v thereby_o that_o as_o yet_o he_o have_v not_o do_v it_o second_o in_o these_o word_n he_o intimate_v that_o if_o she_o will_v repent_v he_o be_v ready_a to_o forgive_v she_o and_o to_o suffer_v she_o still_o to_o enjoy_v his_o benefit_n for_o he_o have_v not_o as_o yet_o spoil_v and_o strip_v she_o as_o he_o just_o may_v and_o be_v loath_a to_o go_v about_o it_o and_o therefore_o he_o exhort_v she_o to_o turn_v from_o her_o sin_n that_o he_o may_v not_o be_v urge_v to_o do_v it_o in_o his_o just_a displeasure_n three_o he_o labour_v to_o work_v in_o her_o true_a repentance_n by_o forewarn_v more_o grievous_a in_o their_o opinion_n and_o apprehension_n for_o where_o he_o will_v she_o to_o take_v away_o her_o sin_n lest_o he_o spoil_v she_o he_o impli_v that_o unless_o she_o repent_v he_o will_v not_o content_v himself_o with_o that_o punishment_n of_o her_o divorce_n but_o will_v most_o certain_o spoil_v she_o of_o all_o the_o ornament_n gift_n and_o benefit_n which_o he_o have_v bestow_v on_o she_o four_o because_o pride_n and_o true_a repentance_n will_v not_o stand_v together_o therefore_o he_o seek_v to_o humble_v she_o both_o by_o put_v she_o in_o mind_n of_o her_o miserable_a and_o base_a estate_n wherein_o she_o be_v before_o he_o advance_v she_o and_o by_o assure_v she_o that_o if_o she_o do_v not_o humble_v herself_o forsake_v her_o sin_n and_o turn_v unto_o he_o from_o her_o idol_n he_o will_v leave_v she_o as_o he_o find_v she_o deprive_v she_o of_o all_o his_o gift_n and_o ourwhelme_v she_o with_o a_o unsupportable_a load_n of_o woe_n and_o misery_n and_o these_o be_v the_o main_a thing_n at_o which_o the_o prophet_n aim_v the_o do_v ∣_o ctrine_n in_o these_o word_n the_o doctrine_n which_o from_o hence_o be_v to_o be_v observe_v be_v these_o first_o we_o may_v observe_v what_o be_v the_o repent_v god_n denounce_v his_o judgment_n that_o we_o may_v repent_v cause_n why_o the_o lord_n denounce_v his_o judgement_n against_o his_o people_n to_o wit_n that_o they_o may_v repent_v of_o their_o sin_n and_o that_o repent_v they_o may_v escape_v punishment_n which_o his_o justice_n urge_v he_o to_o inflict_v upon_o they_o continue_v in_o their_o sin_n so_o he_o cause_v the_o divorce_n to_o be_v proclaim_v that_o they_o may_v take_v away_o their_o adultery_n and_o that_o repent_v of_o they_o they_o may_v not_o be_v strip_v of_o all_o the_o gift_n and_o benefit_n which_o as_o yet_o they_o enjoy_v so_o that_o the_o end_n of_o god_n threaten_n be_v that_o we_o may_v repent_v and_o of_o our_o repentance_n that_o we_o may_v escape_v punishment_n and_o the_o end_n of_o one_o punishment_n be_v that_o make_v good_a use_n of_o it_o we_o may_v escape_v a_o other_o whence_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o god_n even_o in_o wrath_n remember_v mercy_n for_o he_o threaten_v that_o he_o may_v not_o punish_v and_o punish_v that_o he_o may_v not_o destroy_v he_o punish_v unwilling_o after_o a_o sort_n and_o therefore_o before_o hand_n he_o give_v warning_n that_o we_o may_v escape_v it_o and_o have_v inflict_v it_o he_o labour_v to_o apply_v it_o to_o our_o senseless_a heart_n that_o by_o our_o obstinacy_n we_o do_v not_o urge_v his_o justice_n to_o proceed_v in_o punish_v and_o therefore_o let_v we_o not_o by_o our_o stubburnnesse_n and_o impenitency_n make_v god_n end_n frustrate_v and_o turn_v mercy_n into_o justice_n but_o when_o he_o threaten_v let_v we_o repent_v that_o we_o may_v escape_v punishment_n or_o at_o least_o let_v we_o turn_v unto_o he_o when_o he_o punish_v that_o we_o do_v not_o move_v he_o to_o deal_v more_o severe_o with_o us._n the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v observe_v be_v that_o after_o the_o lord_n they_o god_n do_v not_o always_o strip_v a_o people_n of_o all_o his_o benefit_n after_o he_o have_v reject_v they_o have_v reject_v a_o people_n he_o do_v not_o always_o present_o upon_o the_o divorce_n withdraw_v his_o gift_n and_o benefit_n from_o they_o but_o leave_v they_o with_o they_o for_o a_o time_n to_o be_v enjoy_v that_o this_o his_o love_n patience_n and_o bounty_n may_v move_v they_o to_o forsake_v their_o sin_n that_o so_o they_o may_v be_v receive_v into_o his_o former_a love_n and_o favour_n whereby_o as_o we_o have_v occasion_n to_o admire_v and_o praise_v the_o indefatigable_a patience_n and_o infinite_a bounty_n of_o our_o gracious_a god_n so_o may_v we_o hereby_o be_v admonish_v not_o to_o judge_v of_o god_n love_n and_o favour_n nor_o of_o our_o own_o happiness_n by_o outward_a benefit_n whether_o they_o be_v civil_a or_o spiritutuall_a as_o namely_o peace_n plenty_n a_o flourish_a estate_n the_o word_n sacrament_n etc._n etc._n see_v after_o the_o divorce_n he_o vouchsafe_v to_o the_o divorce_v such_o benefit_n for_o a_o time_n as_o appear_v in_o this_o place_n the_o like_a example_n we_o have_v in_o cain_n who_o be_v banish_v god_n presence_n flourish_v in_o the_o world_n and_o in_o saul_n who_o though_o he_o be_v reject_v yet_o the_o lord_n suffer_v he_o a_o long_a time_n to_o enjoy_v the_o kingdom_n and_o in_o ahab_n who_o destruction_n be_v long_o determine_v before_o it_o be_v effect_v three_o we_o may_v observe_v that_o because_o the_o church_n of_o israel_n do_v not_o repent_v upon_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o divorce_n proclaim_v another_o if_o one_o judgement_n will_v not_o reclaim_v we_o god_n will_v send_v another_o therefore_o the_o lord_n threaten_v a_o other_o punishment_n namely_o that_o he_o will_v strip_v and_o spoil_v they_o of_o all_o his_o gift_n so_o that_o although_o in_o his_o love_n and_o patience_n he_o do_v not_o present_o after_o he_o have_v divorce_v they_o deprive_v they_o of_o his_o benefit_n but_o give_v they_o a_o time_n to_o make_v use_n of_o his_o former_a punishment_n yet_o his_o justice_n will_v not_o ever_o suffer_v he_o to_o wink_v at_o their_o sin_n but_o if_o his_o first_o judgement_n will_v not_o reclaim_v they_o he_o will_v go_v forward_o to_o a_o second_o which_o usual_o be_v more_o grievous_a than_o the_o first_o notwithstanding_o in_o this_o he_o first_o denounce_v the_o divorce_n which_o be_v the_o great_a punishment_n and_o after_o the_o withdraw_n of_o his_o gift_n which_o be_v the_o less_o for_o separation_n from_o god_n be_v infinite_o a_o more_o heavy_a judgement_n then_o to_o be_v deprive_v of_o all_o other_o happiness_n and_o this_o he_o do_v because_o howsoever_o these_o thing_n be_v in_o their_o own_o nature_n yet_o to_o worldly_a man_n and_o profane_a hypocrite_n the_o loss_n of_o god_n be_v more_o light_o esteem_v then_o the_o loss_n of_o his_o gift_n for_o so_o they_o may_v enjoy_v their_o worldly_a glory_n riches_n and_o delight_n they_o can_v be_v content_a to_o live_v deprive_v of_o god_n favour_n and_o to_o be_v divorce_v from_o he_o and_o therefore_o the_o lord_n
their_o calling_n to_o deliver_v their_o embassage_n and_o see_v in_o resist_v they_o they_o rebel_v against_o god_n himself_o neither_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o any_o shall_v be_v obedient_a unto_o god_n who_o malign_v his_o messenger_n for_o his_o message_n sake_n and_o second_o when_o god_n judgement_n be_v denounce_v out_o of_o his_o word_n against_o they_o for_o their_o sin_n they_o be_v not_o to_o neglect_v they_o but_o to_o lay_v they_o to_o heart_n that_o thereby_o they_o may_v be_v move_v to_o unfeigned_a repentance_n notwithstanding_o they_o see_v no_o appearance_n of_o danger_n or_o any_o likely_a mean_n whereby_o such_o punishment_n may_v be_v derive_v unto_o they_o see_v the_o lord_n who_o word_n it_o be_v which_o we_o hear_v be_v able_a to_o effect_v it_o though_o to_o we_o it_o seem_v impossible_a and_o so_o much_o concern_v the_o first_o part_n of_o this_o chapter_n contain_v in_o it_o legal_a threaten_n denounce_v against_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n for_o their_o sin_n now_o we_o be_v to_o speak_v of_o the_o second_o part_n contain_v in_o it_o god_n gracious_a promise_n of_o diverse_a excellent_a benefit_n which_o he_o will_v bestow_v upon_o his_o church_n and_o people_n the_o true_a israel_n of_o god_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o first_o whereof_o be_v their_o effectual_a call_n and_o conversion_n unto_o god_n whereby_o they_o be_v free_v out_o of_o the_o spiritual_a captivity_n of_o satan_n choose_v out_o of_o the_o world_n and_o make_v god_n church_n and_o peculiar_a people_n the_o second_o be_v true_a consolation_n wrought_v in_o their_o heart_n by_o the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o the_o gospel_n make_v effectual_a by_o the_o inward_a work_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n both_o which_o be_v contain_v verse_n 14._o in_o these_o word_n verse_n 14_o therefore_o behold_v i_o will_v allure_v she_o and_o bring_v she_o into_o the_o wilderness_n and_o speak_v friendly_a or_o confortablie_o unto_o she_o where_o the_o exposition_n the_o exposition_n lord_n show_v that_o howsoever_o be_v provoke_v unto_o wrath_n by_o their_o sin_n he_o will_v execute_v upon_o they_o all_o those_o punishment_n before_o threaten_v yet_o he_o will_v not_o retain_v his_o anger_n for_o ever_o but_o in_o the_o end_n when_o he_o have_v lay_v upon_o they_o such_o affliction_n as_o be_v sufficient_a measure_v their_o proportion_n by_o the_o rule_n of_o his_o fatherly_a love_n and_o not_o according_a to_o the_o heinousness_n of_o their_o sin_n he_o will_v turn_v all_o their_o chastisement_n to_o their_o good_a and_o gather_v they_o into_o his_o church_n multiply_v his_o mercy_n upon_o they_o but_o let_v we_o come_v to_o the_o word_n themselves_o wherein_o we_o be_v to_o consider_v first_o the_o context_n and_o second_o the_o benefit_n promise_v the_o context_n in_o these_o word_n therefore_o behold_v this_o may_v seem_v a_o strange_a kind_n of_o consequence_n for_o in_o the_o former_a verse_n he_o have_v set_v down_o their_o obstinacy_n in_o their_o gross_a idolatry_n and_o that_o they_o be_v so_o whole_o devote_a to_o their_o idol_n that_o they_o have_v quite_o forget_v the_o true_a god_n and_o now_o he_o present_o infer_v hereupon_o that_o therefore_o he_o will_v allure_v she_o and_o speak_v comfortable_o unto_o she_o but_o howsoever_o this_o may_v seem_v but_o a_o bad_a inference_n if_o we_o regard_v their_o sin_n upon_o the_o recital_n whereof_o it_o shall_v rather_o have_v follow_v that_o therefore_o they_o shall_v have_v such_o punishment_n inflict_v upon_o they_o as_o their_o sin_n have_v deserve_v yet_o it_o have_v good_a dependence_n if_o we_o respect_v god_n infinite_a mercy_n and_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n whereby_o he_o have_v of_o his_o free_a grace_n and_o undeserued_a goodness_n ordain_v to_o call_v they_o who_o belong_v to_o his_o election_n out_o of_o their_o sin_n that_o be_v convert_v they_o may_v also_o be_v save_v as_o though_o he_o shall_v have_v say_v see_v they_o follow_v their_o idol_n with_o delightful_a obstinacy_n and_o have_v altogether_o forget_v i_o and_o see_v their_o heart_n be_v so_o blind_a and_o obdurate_a that_o all_o my_o punishment_n will_v not_o reclaim_v they_o and_o final_o see_v it_o be_v not_o my_o purpose_n to_o give_v they_o over_o to_o destruction_n and_o to_o suffer_v they_o to_o run_v headlong_o to_o condemnation_n therefore_o i_o will_v not_o let_v they_o go_v forward_o in_o their_o own_o course_n nor_o be_v rule_v by_o their_o own_o obstinate_a will_n for_o than_o they_o will_v never_o return_v unto_o i_o but_o i_o will_v work_v upon_o their_o hard_a heart_n by_o my_o word_n and_o spirit_n allure_a and_o persuade_v they_o to_o leave_v their_o idol_n and_o false_a worship_n and_o to_o return_v unto_o i_o that_o they_o may_v worship_v i_o according_a to_o my_o reveal_v will_n and_o submit_v themselves_o unto_o i_o in_o all_o holy_a obedience_n and_o because_o this_o be_v a_o wonderful_a mercy_n of_o god_n far_o above_o all_o humane_a conceit_n and_o therefore_o not_o light_o and_o negligent_o to_o be_v pass_v over_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o note_n of_o attention_n be_v add_v therefore_o behold_v that_o we_o may_v more_o careful_o observe_v and_o observe_v praise_n and_o magnify_v this_o unspeakable_a goodness_n of_o god_n who_o by_o our_o sin_n be_v move_v rather_o to_o pity_v then_o to_o punish_v us._n and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o context_n the_o first_o benefit_n here_o promise_v be_v their_o effectual_a call_n whereby_o work_v upon_o their_o heart_n with_o his_o word_n and_o spirit_n he_o will_v allure_v and_o persuade_v they_o to_o forsake_v their_o idolatry_n and_o to_o come_v out_o of_o the_o service_n of_o sin_n and_o satan_n that_o they_o may_v become_v true_a member_n of_o his_o church_n and_o live_v in_o holy_a obedience_n unto_o his_o will_n as_o his_o true_a subject_n and_o servant_n all_o which_o be_v contain_v in_o these_o word_n i_o will_v allure_v she_o and_o bring_v she_o into_o the_o wilderness_n where_o he_o allude_v to_o their_o first_o delivery_n out_o of_o the_o captivity_n and_o from_o the_o blind_a idolatry_n of_o egypt_n when_o as_o first_o he_o allure_v and_o persuade_v they_o by_o his_o servant_n moses_n and_o aaron_n to_o desire_v earnest_o to_o come_v out_o of_o that_o bondage_n that_o they_o 31._o exod._n 4._o 30._o 31._o may_v become_v his_o servant_n and_o people_n and_o have_v so_o incline_v their_o heart_n he_o bring_v they_o out_o with_o a_o strong_a arm_n and_o lead_v they_o into_o the_o wilderness_n where_o he_o make_v his_o covenant_n with_o they_o and_o afterward_o bring_v they_o into_o the_o land_n of_o promise_n where_o he_o multiply_v upon_o they_o his_o manifold_a benefit_n as_o it_o follow_v in_o the_o next_o verse_n so_o the_o lord_n by_o his_o servant_n and_o minister_n do_v work_v in_o the_o ignorant_a mind_n and_o stubborn_a heart_n of_o those_o that_o belong_v to_o
