So the Apostle openeth it in Heb. 10. from the 40. Psalme Sacrifice and Oblation Minchah thou wouldest not but a bodie hast thou prepared mee c. Above when he said Sacrifice and Oblation and Burnt offrings and offrings for sin thou wouldest not c. then said he Loe I come to doe thy will O God c. By the which will we are sanctified through the offring of the body of Iesus Christ once Heb. 10. 5. 8. 9. 10. And seas in Hebrew Iamim are named of Majim waters and of the tumultuous noyse which they make Wherupon the Prophets apply the name of waters and seas to troubles and troublesome peoples Ier. 51. 42. Rev. 17. 15. Esa. 57. 20. Psal. 65. 8. V. 11. yeelding Hebr. making that is bearing and bringing forth From this fruitfulnesse of the earth are many arguments of Gods praise in Psal. 104. 14. 15. 16. The holy Ghost compareth mans nature hereunto Heb. 6. 7. and men are likened to trees their words and workes to fruites Ier. 17. 7. 8. Math. 3. 10. after his kinde so that men doe not gather figges of thornes nor grapes of the bramble Luke 6. 44. This also noteth the great varietie of hearbs weeds trees of sundry sorts and different qualities The like is after concerning beasts whose seed is or which hath it seed in it selfe whereby it is continued and yearely renewed For by seed sowne the hearbs and trees spring up againe 1. Lights or Lighters that is lightsome bodies or instruments that shew light This name Paul applieth to the saints that shine in the world Phil. 2. 15. for signes to signifie things both naturall and ordinary and extraordinary for mercy or judgement Luke 21. 25. Psal 65. 9. seasons or set times as summer winter spring and autumne Gen. 8. 22. which come by the course of the Sun the Moone also is for appoynted times Psal. 104. 19. so bee the Stars and constellations Iob 38. 31. 32. In Israel also the set times of Gods seruice were by them as new moones and festivities Numb 28. Of the stars Iob saith God maketh Arcturus which riseth in September and beginneth Autumne and Orion which ariseth in December and beginneth Winter and Pleiades which arise in the Spring and the chambers of the South that is the southerne stars which are for the most part hidden from us as in chambers but some arise to us in Summer as the dog-star and the like Iob 9. 9. dayes both large dayes of 24. houres from sun setting to sun setting and strict of 12. houres from sunne rising to sunne setting as is observed before on verse 5. a speciall use wherof is shewed in Psal. 104. 19. 23. and yeares that is and for yeares as the Greeke translateth it A proprietie of speech when a word oft before expressed is in the last branch omitted for brevity The like is in Hose 3. 4. Eph. 4. 11. Gal. 3. 28. A yeare hath the name in Hebrew of Changing or iteration which is by the revolutions of the sunne moone and starres For in saying yeares he may comprehend not onely the period or circuit of the sunne which is in 365. dayes and 6. houres but of the other planets also The Hebrew Doctors say The moneths of the yeare they are the moneths of the moone and the yeares that we count they are the yeares of the Sunne The dayes of the yeare of the moone are 354. The yeare of the Sun hath 365. dayes and a quarter which is sixe houres Maimony in Misn. in Kiddush hachodesh ch 1. S. 1. c. 8. S. 3. c. 9. S. 1. V. 16. the greater or the great light meaning the Sun Ps. 136. 8. which is called in Hebrew somtime Chammah the warme-sun Esai 30. 26. because none is hid from his heat Psal. 19. 7. sometime Cheres the glistering-sun Iob 9. 7. but usually it is named Shemesh that is a Minister or servant because by it GOD ministreth light heat and precious fruits to all people under heaven Deut. 4. 19. and 33. 14. The Sunne is in the midst of the planets as principall and when hee riseth he is glorious like a Bridegroome comming forth out of his chamber Psalm 19. 6. and hee is the greatest of all the heavenly lights By the accompt of our Astronomers the Sunne is 166. times greater and by the Hebrew Doctors reckoning about 170. times greater-than the earth Maimony
wilt compasse me Selah I will make thee prudent and will teach thee in the way that thou shalt goe I will give counsell mine eye shall be upon thee Be not ye as the horse as the mule without understanding whose mouth must be stopped with bit and bridle which come not neere unto thee Many pains are for the wicked but he that trusteth in Iehovah mercy shall compasse him Rejoyce ye in Iehovah and be glad ye just and shout joyfully all ye upright of heart Annotations AN instructing Psalme or A Psalme that maketh prudent that causeth understanding As in the 8. verse of this psalm he saith I wil make thee prudent or instruct thee This title is set before sundry other Psalmes whose sinne is covered meaning by the Lord Psal. 85. 3. not by a man himselfe who must not cover but acknowledge sinne Psal. 32. 5. otherwise he shall not prosper Prov. 28. 13. Now God covereth sinne when hee imputeth it not as the verse following sheweth and as this is mans happinesse so for God not to cover it is woe and misery Nehem. 4. 5. Vers. 2. not impute not thinke count or reckon And this is an effect of his grace in Christ as it is written God was in Christ and reconciled the world to himselfe not imputing their sinnes unto them 2 Cor. 5. 19. And hereunto the Apostle applieth this Psalme thus David saith blessednesse is the mans unto whom God imputeth justnesse without works saying Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sinnes are covered Blessed is the man to whom the Lord shall not impute sinne Rom. 4. 6 7 8. Vers. 3. because I ceased speaking or when I kept silence forbearing to confesse my sinnes as after vers 5. Like doctrine Elih● teacheth Iob 33. 19 22. Vers. 4. thy haud in Chaldee thy plague moisture the chiefe sap or radicall moisture which is an airy and oily substance dispred through the body whereby the life is fostered and which being spent death ensueth This word is used onely here and in Num. 11. 8. where it is applied to the best moisture or creame of oile Vers. 5. confesse Confessing of sinnes is when one freely manifesteth them accusing himselfe and praising Gods mercie which he expecteth in faith see Ios. 7. 19. against me my trespasses or concerning my trespasses but both the Greeke version plainly hath against me and elsewhere the Hebrew ghnalei here vsed seemeth to bee put for ghnalai as Psal. 108. 10. compared with Psal. 60. 10. the iniquitie of my sinne that is the guilt and punishment of it as Psal. 31. 11. And thus he that confesseth and forsaketh sinne shall have mercie Prov. 28. 13. for if wee acknowledge our sinnes God is faithfull and just to forgive us them 1 Ioh. 1. 9 See also Iob 33. 27 28. I have not declined 52. I remembred thy judgements of old O Iehovah and conforted my selfe 53. A burning horrour hath taken hold on me for the wicked the forsakers of thy law 54. Thy statutes have beene songs to me in the house of my pilgrimages 55. I remembred in the night thy name O Iehovah and observed thy law 56. This was to mee because I kept thy precepts 57. My portion Iehovah I have said to observe thy words 58. I have earnestly besought thy face with all the heart be gratious to mee according to thy saying 59. I thought upon my waies and turned my feet unto thy testimonies 60. I made haste and delayed not to observe thy commandements 61. Bands of the wicked have robbed mee thy law I have not forgotten 62. Of all perfection I have seene an end large is thy commandement vehemently 97. O how I love thy law all the day it is my meditation 98. The wicked have laid a snare for me and from thy precepts I have not strayed 111. I possesse for heritage thy testimonies for ever for they are the joy of mine heart 112. I have inclined mine heart to doe thy statutes for ever to the end 113. I hate vaine thoughts and I love thy law 114. Thou art my secret place and my shield I hopefully wait for thy word 115. Depart from me yee evill doers that I may keepe the commandements of my God 116. Vphold me according to thy saying that I may live and let me not be abashed for my hope 117. Sustaine me and I shall be saved and I will delight in thy statutes continually 118. Thou hast troden downe all them that stray from thy statutes for their deceit is falshood 119. Like drosse thou makest cease all the wicked of the earth therfore I love thy testimonies 120. My flesh feeleth horrour for dread of thee and I feare for thy judgements 121. I have done judgement and justice leave me not to mine oppressours 122. Be surety for thy servant for good let not the proud oppresse mee 123.
