of_o god_n to_o offend_v by_o thought_n vain_a and_o ungodly_a to_o strive_v with_o our_o flesh_n and_o to_o have_v our_o affection_n subdue_v to_o the_o spirit_n that_o so_o our_o heart_n be_v reform_v all_o our_o member_n may_v be_v conformable_a in_o every_o respect_n to_o the_o will_n and_o commandment_n of_o almighty_a god_n and_o thus_o far_o must_v we_o be_v humble_v if_o we_o will_v be_v true_o humble_v before_o the_o lord_n and_o true_o if_o we_o be_v not_o right_o humble_v before_o the_o lord_n we_o can_v hardly_o have_v any_o assurance_n that_o we_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n for_o without_o this_o humble_v of_o we_o have_v have_v some_o taste_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n we_o for_o the_o most_o part_n resemble_v the_o corn_n that_o our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o sow_v in_o the_o stony_a ground_n which_o for_o a_o time_n flourish_v that_o be_v make_v a_o fair_a face_n as_o many_o hypocrite_n can_v do_v now_o but_o have_v no_o root_n nor_o nothing_o at_o all_o in_o truth_n they_o show_v themselves_o how_o unable_a they_o be_v to_o stand_v because_o they_o have_v no_o deepness_n of_o ground_n the_o seed_n of_o the_o word_n never_o begin_v nor_o root_v in_o their_o heart_n so_o that_o we_o must_v be_v true_o humble_v before_o the_o lord_n and_o the_o word_n must_v be_v permit_v to_o rip_v and_o lay_v open_a unto_o we_o the_o very_a secret_n and_o thought_n of_o the_o heart_n now_o those_o which_o see_v and_o feel_v their_o sin_n and_o be_v already_o humble_v more_o especial_o be_v humble_v either_o by_o preach_v of_o the_o law_n unto_o they_o or_o else_o by_o affliction_n affliction_n be_v either_o of_o the_o body_n or_o of_o the_o mind_n of_o these_o the_o lord_n sometime_o to_o humble_v we_o do_v send_v the_o one_o sometime_o the_o other_o sometime_o both_o and_o all_o to_o humble_v we_o before_o his_o majesty_n when_o as_o he_o see_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o our_o nature_n that_o the_o preach_n of_o the_o law_n be_v not_o sufficient_a to_o humble_v we_o &_o to_o strike_v that_o terror_n into_o our_o heart_n which_o may_v make_v we_o due_o prepare_v to_o receive_v into_o our_o heart_n the_o sweet_a and_o comfortable_a promise_n make_v to_o we_o in_o christ_n that_o it_o may_v be_v so_o root_v that_o it_o may_v still_o grow_v up_o even_o to_o the_o full_a ripe_a and_o perfitage_n of_o our_o lord_n and_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n because_o i_o say_v our_o love_a father_n see_v that_o the_o law_n will_v not_o suffice_v we_o therefore_o it_o please_v he_o in_o mercy_n who_o will_v leave_v no_o way_n unassayed_a for_o the_o salvation_n of_o his_o child_n to_o prepare_v we_o by_o afflict_v we_o which_o can_v not_o by_o the_o hear_n of_o his_o law_n be_v true_o prepare_v now_o if_o affliction_n be_v such_o a_o notable_a thing_n and_o the_o lord_n work_v even_o eternal_a life_n thereby_o oftentimes_o to_o those_o who_o he_o have_v elect_v and_o call_v to_o be_v he_o how_o love_o ought_v they_o to_o embrace_v it_o to_o who_o the_o lord_n so_o fatherly_a do_v offer_v it_o and_o how_o patient_o and_o cheerful_o ought_v they_o to_o bear_v it_o in_o asmuch_o as_o they_o thereby_o may_v assure_v themselves_o that_o god_n have_v sever_v they_o from_o the_o world_n and_o from_o those_o on_o who_o he_o mean_v to_o show_v no_o mercy_n in_o the_o day_n of_o his_o wrath_n and_o as_o for_o those_o who_o the_o lord_n as_o yet_o have_v lay_v no_o scourge_n upon_o they_o let_v they_o not_o long_o for_o it_o but_o let_v they_o lay_v the_o law_n of_o god_n and_o the_o threaten_n thereof_o unto_o their_o heart_n to_o humble_v they_o thereby_o it_o be_v better_a to_o be_v humble_v thereby_o than_o by_o affliction_n and_o yet_o better_a by_o affliction_n than_o not_o at_o all_o to_o commend_v affliction_n and_o to_o mislike_v of_o preach_v of_o the_o law_n be_v as_o though_o one_o shall_v commend_v a_o sore_a and_o dangerous_a purgation_n and_o mislike_v a_o good_a diet_n a_o good_a diet_n be_v able_a and_o it_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n appoint_v of_o god_n to_o procure_v and_o conserve_v health_n which_o as_o many_o of_o we_o as_o be_v not_o unwise_a will_v observe_v now_o if_o for_o want_n of_o discretion_n or_o for_o greedy_a desire_n we_o neglect_v this_o and_o so_o by_o gather_v together_o of_o ill_a and_o noisome_a humour_n within_o we_o we_o endanger_v our_o life_n yet_o to_o save_v our_o life_n we_o will_v suffer_v the_o work_n of_o the_o most_o strong_a purgation_n that_o the_o physician_n shall_v prescribe_v we_o so_o the_o law_n that_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o make_v we_o apt_a to_o hear_v the_o word_n of_o peace_n and_o salvation_n and_o aught_o of_o we_o to_o be_v observe_v and_o apply_v unto_o we_o that_o we_o may_v thereby_o be_v preserve_v rather_o than_o by_o affliction_n yet_o if_o our_o merciful_a lord_n and_o only_a physician_n of_o our_o soul_n shall_v with_o tender_a compassion_n look_v upon_o our_o sore_n and_o shall_v see_v the_o malady_n of_o our_o soul_n to_o be_v incurable_a without_o the_o strong_a purgation_n of_o affliction_n then_o ought_v we_o even_o with_o good_a courage_n to_o take_v indeed_o be_v the_o curse_n of_o god_n now_o the_o curse_n of_o god_n be_v the_o verify_n of_o his_o law_n and_o though_o it_o please_v god_n to_o bless_v it_o as_o he_o do_v always_o to_o his_o child_n for_o all_o thing_n turn_v to_o the_o best_a to_o they_o that_o love_v he_o yet_o ought_v it_o not_o to_o be_v the_o mean_n to_o humble_v we_o rather_o than_o the_o other_o the_o end_n of_o affliction_n and_o of_o threaten_v both_o be_v to_o humble_v we_o and_o therefore_o it_o be_v better_a to_o be_v humble_v by_o threaten_v than_o by_o experience_n of_o punishment_n for_o the_o threat_n of_o the_o law_n may_v do_v this_o as_o well_o as_o affliction_n if_o we_o be_v not_o unwise_a in_o ourselves_o we_o may_v have_v some_o testimony_n of_o our_o true_a humble_v in_o time_n of_o affliction_n yet_o be_v it_o hard_o to_o say_v for_o other_o whether_o one_o which_o now_o feel_v the_o hand_n of_o god_n upon_o he_o and_o never_o feel_v any_o token_n of_o god_n displeasure_n before_o be_v either_o true_o humble_v for_o his_o sin_n for_o which_o he_o be_v afflict_v or_o seem_v to_o be_v humble_v because_o of_o the_o pain_n that_o he_o abide_v therefore_o even_o he_o that_o be_v afflict_v aught_o to_o examine_v his_o own_o soul_n whether_o he_o be_v true_o humble_v and_o feel_v within_o himself_o even_o a_o grief_n that_o he_o have_v so_o diverse_o provoke_v god_n to_o plague_v he_o acknowledge_v god_n unspeakable_a mercy_n and_o long_o suffer_v that_o he_o long_o ere_o this_o do_v not_o clean_a consumne_n he_o lest_o otherwise_o the_o devil_n deceive_v he_o as_o he_o have_v do_v diverse_a who_o for_o a_o time_n seem_v to_o be_v humble_v because_o of_o the_o heat_n of_o their_o grief_n but_o afterward_o when_o the_o lord_n have_v stay_v his_o hand_n they_o he_o that_o feel_v the_o weight_n and_o burden_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o god_n displeasure_n for_o sin_n and_o even_o groan_v as_o it_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o sin_n he_o may_v find_v a_o heavenly_a comfort_n and_o assurance_n of_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n for_o if_o thou_o see_v a_o man_n true_o humble_v he_o will_v i_o consider_v say_v the_o lord_n

rule_n to_o teach_v we_o to_o admonish_v but_o when_o we_o come_v to_o practice_v in_o particular_n then_o must_v we_o either_o have_v the_o new_a grace_n of_o god_n or_o else_o we_o shall_v fail_v in_o the_o practice_n if_o this_o man_n that_o believe_v pray_v thus_o how_o much_o more_o ought_v they_o that_o believe_v not_o and_o they_o that_o believe_v general_o must_v confess_v their_o blindness_n in_o particular_n and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v pray_v for_o it_o although_o ignorance_n be_v help_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o altogether_o cure_v therefore_o have_v we_o need_v to_o pray_v second_o because_o our_o knowledge_n be_v in_o general_n but_o practice_n be_v in_o particular_n and_o therein_o must_v we_o have_v a_o new_a assistance_n therefore_o when_o we_o have_v not_o good_a care_n to_o do_v good_a nor_o a_o conscience_n to_o avoid_v evil_a and_o to_o look_v into_o they_o be_v to_o look_v into_o the_o glass_n of_o god_n word_n many_o deny_v providence_n because_o they_o have_v not_o a_o knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n or_o else_o lean_v to_o their_o reason_n give_v too_o much_o to_o natural_a cause_n or_o last_o because_o they_o have_v not_o a_o daily_o grow_v in_o we_o make_v conscience_n to_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o good_a and_o to_o avoid_v the_o occasion_n of_o evil_a we_o can_v profit_v thus_o we_o have_v show_v how_o the_o judgement_n of_o god_n may_v be_v sweet_a that_o be_v unto_o they_o that_o rejoice_v either_o to_o see_v the_o promise_n of_o god_n perform_v to_o the_o penitent_a or_o his_o wrath_n fulfil_v in_o the_o impenitent_a this_o delight_n make_v the_o prophet_n out_o of_o the_o abundance_n of_o his_o heart_n to_o speak_v joyful_o of_o they_o portion_n 2._o 6._o with_o my_o lip_n have_v i_o declare_v all_o the_o judgement_n of_o thy_o so_o from_o henceforth_o we_o may_v please_v ourselves_o in_o true_a history_n in_o the_o word_n for_o though_o other_o may_v be_v corrupt_a with_o flatter_n yet_o these_o history_n be_v true_a &_o free_a from_o all_o assentation_n because_o they_o register_v as_o well_o the_o sin_n of_o the_o king_n and_o their_o kindred_n as_o their_o virtue_n neither_o can_v we_o ever_o sound_v the_o prophet_n until_o from_o the_o experience_n of_o our_o own_o self_n we_o can_v proclaim_v forth_o the_o example_n both_o of_o god_n promise_n and_o of_o his_o judgement_n we_o show_v that_o the_o cause_n why_o we_o feel_v not_o such_o profit_n as_o the_o man_n of_o god_n do_v in_o the_o word_n be_v because_o we_o use_v not_o the_o like_a pain_n we_o use_v few_o mean_n therefore_o our_o love_n be_v the_o less_o to_o the_o truth_n we_o avoid_v not_o so_o many_o occasion_n of_o evil_a therefore_o we_o sin_v the_o more_o if_o we_o then_o will_v be_v more_o diligent_a in_o conference_n more_o fervent_a in_o prayer_n more_o give_v to_o meditation_n we_o shall_v profit_v more_o if_o we_o will_v refrain_v from_o evil_a and_o abstain_v from_o occasion_n of_o it_o we_o shall_v both_o be_v great_a in_o good_a thing_n and_o avoid_v many_o affliction_n the_o cause_n then_o why_o we_o either_o speak_v not_o of_o god_n judgement_n at_o all_o or_o speak_v speak_v so_o cold_o be_v because_o we_o be_v so_o dead_a in_o use_v the_o mean_n of_o good_a and_o so_o dull_a in_o avoid_v the_o occasion_n of_o evil_a the_o prophet_n port_n 7._o 4._o say_v i_o have_v remember_v thy_o judgement_n of_o old_a and_o have_v be_v comfort_v where_o we_o be_v to_o note_v that_o we_o be_v not_o at_o utter_a defiance_n of_o sin_n note_n and_o in_o full_a league_n with_o goodness_n until_o we_o have_v find_v comfort_n when_o either_o the_o lord_n show_v mercy_n upon_o he_o or_o vengeance_n on_o the_o wicked_a and_o then_o god_n judgement_n will_v be_v sweet_a unto_o we_o when_o remember_v that_o no_o sin_n shall_v be_v unpunished_a we_o abstain_v from_o sin_n â—nd_v see_v that_o no_o good_a thing_n shall_v be_v unrewarded_a we_o be_v move_v to_o goodness_n for_o what_o can_v strengthen_v a_o man_n more_o than_o to_o consider_v this_o that_o god_n will_v punish_v sin_n one_o day_n and_o that_o in_o time_n he_o will_v fulfil_v his_o promise_n to_o his_o child_n which_o walk_v in_o truth_n prosperity_n make_v we_o to_o forget_v god_n so_o many_o inconvenience_n by_o affliction_n may_v befall_v we_o as_o either_o dulness_n deadness_n blockishness_n or_o wicked_a shift_n or_o ungodly_a doubt_n wherefore_o the_o man_n of_o god_n here_o teach_v we_o that_o if_o he_o use_v such_o remedy_n in_o the_o great_a trouble_n they_o how_o much_o more_o shall_v we_o use_v they_o in_o the_o less_o we_o be_v here_o beside_o to_o accuse_v our_o unbelief_n bewray_v in_o small_a thing_n see_v the_o prophet_n in_o so_o great_a extremity_n exercise_v his_o faith_n against_o all_o the_o profit_v by_o their_o example_n who_o be_v under_o the_o law_n who_o be_v in_o the_o dawn_n of_o the_o day_n or_o rather_o in_o the_o night_n in_o respect_n of_o we_o unto_o who_o christ_n be_v we_o may_v not_o use_v unlawful_a mean_n but_o rather_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n as_o our_o chief_a strength_n &_o feel_v they_o with_o god_n favour_n in_o we_o then_o may_v we_o use_v the_o other_o to_o these_o for_o than_o will_v the_o lord_n give_v success_n and_o blessing_n to_o natural_a and_o secondary_a mean_n when_o our_o heart_n be_v chief_o stay_v on_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n as_o our_o chief_a strength_n and_o feel_v they_o with_o god_n favour_n in_o we_o in_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o renew_v of_o our_o mind_n we_o crave_v a_o blessing_n on_o the_o creature_n as_o on_o the_o second_o mean_n beside_o he_o acknowledge_v in_o this_o word_n quicken_v the_o lord_n to_o be_v the_o author_n of_o life_n and_o that_o without_o his_o word_n he_o be_v as_o dead_a this_o life_n indeed_o be_v the_o shadow_n of_o death_n common_a with_o the_o reprobate_n and_o bruit_n beast_n and_o our_o life_n be_v only_o in_o christ_n jesus_n so_o adam_n be_v call_v dead_a what_o be_v that_o sure_o in_o that_o his_o soul_n have_v nothing_o to_o do_v with_o god_n and_o although_o god_n give_v he_o a_o natural_a life_n yet_o spiritual_o he_o be_v dead_a thus_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n think_v they_o be_v at_o the_o last_o cast_v &_o ready_a for_o the_o burier_n when_o feel_v they_o can_v not_o feel_v god_n presence_n and_o promise_n according_a to_o thy_o word_n that_o be_v according_a to_o thy_o promise_n for_o we_o have_v none_o assurance_n to_o come_v to_o god_n unless_o his_o word_n be_v give_v unto_o us._n what_o have_v he_o especial_a or_o peculiar_a promise_n work_v in_o he_o the_o diverse_a place_n of_o this_o psalm_n will_v she_o we_o no_o such_o thing_n because_o this_o psalm_n be_v a_o image_n of_o regeneration_n they_o be_v general_a promise_n as_o be_v other_o in_o many_o place_n of_o the_o scripture_n rejoice_v regeneration_n o_o zion_n for_o thy_o redeemer_n come_v every_o man_n may_v apply_v this_o to_o himself_o as_o be_v also_o that_o place_n isaiah_n 66._o 2._o i_o that_o dwell_v in_o heaven_n will_v look_v cven_v to_o he_o that_o be_v poor_a and_o of_o a_o contrite_a heart_n and_o tremble_v at_o my_o word_n these_o promise_n be_v general_a and_o therefore_o we_o must_v look_v to_o be_v quicken_v by_o they_o for_o the_o lord_n say_v that_o though_o eternity_n be_v his_o place_n yet_o will_v he_o come_v to_o
