and_o work_v we_o may_v then_o give_v free_a scope_n to_o our_o fancy_n and_o draw_v such_o conclusion_n as_o be_v no_o where_o express_o contain_v in_o scripture_n or_o can_v not_o possible_o have_v be_v learn_v from_o scripture_n at_o least_o not_o clear_o and_o save_o without_o such_o a_o acquaintance_n with_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n that_o be_v without_o reason_v and_o draw_v conclusion_n from_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v &_o suffer_v these_o conclusion_n must_v be_v form_v into_o artificial_a theory_n and_o scheme_n of_o religion_n and_o then_o these_o be_v the_o great_a gospel-mystery_n and_o the_o only_a save_a knowledge_n of_o christ_n and_o those_o man_n only_o preach_v christ_n who_o fill_v people_n head_n with_o such_o choice_a speculation_n as_o they_o have_v learn_v from_o this_o acquaintance_n with_o christ._n i_o think_v there_o be_v very_o great_a reason_n to_o oppose_v this_o principle_n which_o give_v such_o boundless_a scope_n to_o man_n fancy_n and_o allow_v every_o man_n to_o frame_v and_o mould_n a_o religion_n according_a to_o his_o own_o humour_n and_o be_v the_o more_o confirm_v in_o this_o when_o i_o observe_v what_o strange_a mystery_n the_o doctor_n himself_o have_v learn_v from_o this_o acquaintance_n with_o christ_n which_o i_o be_o sure_a without_o this_o he_o can_v never_o have_v learn_v either_o from_o scripture_n or_o reason_n i_o give_v several_a instance_n of_o this_o nature_n out_o of_o his_o own_o write_n which_o shall_v be_v make_v good_a in_o due_a time_n at_o present_a i_o must_v observe_v what_o doctrine_n i_o there_o reject_v and_o in_o what_o sense_n i_o reject_v such_o a_o notion_n of_o god_n justice_n as_o represent_v he_o as_o fierce_a and_o savage_a as_o the_o worst_a of_o being_n such_o a_o notion_n of_o justice_n as_o disparage_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n as_o if_o the_o whole_a design_n of_o it_o be_v to_o gratify_v revenge_n and_o to_o appease_v a_o furious_a and_o merciless_a deity_n which_o notion_n at_o first_o fright_v socinus_n out_o of_o his_o wit_n and_o make_v he_o rather_o choose_v to_o deny_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n than_o to_o believe_v any_o thing_n so_o unworthy_a of_o god_n though_o thanks_o be_v to_o god_n that_o we_o need_v do_v neither_o i_o reject_v such_o a_o notion_n of_o justice_n as_o disparage_v the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n in_o the_o contrivance_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o jesus_n christ_n for_o if_o it_o be_v absolute_o necessary_a for_o god_n to_o punish_v sin_n and_o there_o be_v no_o other_o person_n in_o the_o world_n fit_a or_o able_a to_o bear_v the_o punishment_n of_o sin_n and_o to_o make_v expiation_n for_o it_o but_o only_o christ_n there_o be_v require_v no_o great_a wisdom_n to_o make_v the_o with_o deny_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n and_o blaspheme_a god_n mere_o for_o reject_v such_o doctrine_n as_o be_v injurious_a to_o the_o satisfaction_n of_o christ_n and_o when_o they_o be_v pursue_v to_o their_o just_a and_o natural_a consequence_n be_v down_o right_a blasphemy_n against_o god_n this_o be_v a_o certain_a way_n to_o prevent_v the_o confutation_n of_o such_o doctrine_n we_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v the_o same_o thing_n ourselves_o and_o that_o upon_o this_o account_n we_o be_v justify_v only_o by_o the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n without_o respect_n to_o any_o inherent_a righteousness_n in_o ourselves_o now_o i_o reject_v this_o because_o no_o union_n can_v thus_o entitle_v we_o to_o christ_n personal_a excellency_n and_o righteousness_n but_o such_o a_o natural_a union_n as_o make_v christ_n and_o believer_n one_o person_n that_o they_o be_v chri_v with_o christ_n which_o be_v a_o absurd_a and_o dangerous_a heresy_n but_o neither_o our_o marriage_n to_o christ_n nor_o his_o be_v our_o surety_n or_o mediator_n can_v effect_v this_o for_o whatever_o union_n there_o may_v be_v between_o the_o person_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o person_n of_o believer_n while_o their_o person_n remain_v distinct_a their_o property_n and_o qualification_n and_o righteousness_n must_v be_v consider_v as_o distinct_a too_o and_o though_o we_o may_v receive_v great_a advantage_n by_o what_o christ_n have_v do_v and_o suffer_v yet_o it_o can_v be_v reckon_v we_o in_o that_o strict_a notion_n as_o if_o it_o have_v be_v do_v by_o we_o and_o there_o be_v a_o vast_a difference_n between_o these_o two_o notion_n for_o the_o first_o only_o make_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n the_o meritorious_a cause_n of_o our_o pardon_n and_o reward_n which_o make_v it_o necessary_a to_o have_v a_o righteousness_n of_o our_o own_o to_o entitle_v we_o to_o these_o blessing_n but_o the_o second_o make_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n our_o personal_a righteousness_n which_o destroy_v the_o necessity_n of_o any_o inherent_a righteousness_n in_o ourselves_o but_o of_o this_o more_o hereafter_o i_o reject_v such_o a_o notion_n of_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n whereby_o bad_a man_n may_v be_v nay_o must_v be_v unite_v to_o christ_n while_o they_o continue_v in_o their_o sin_n for_o if_o it_o once_o be_v grant_v as_o it_o must_v be_v grant_v if_o we_o believe_v the_o gospel_n that_o our_o union_n to_o christ_n give_v we_o a_o actual_a interest_n in_o all_o his_o promise_n such_o as_o pardon_v of_o sin_n and_o eternal_a life_n it_o be_v easy_a of_o god_n and_o a_o heir_n of_o everlasting_a life_n and_o what_o become_v then_o of_o all_o those_o gospel-threatning_n which_o denounce_v the_o wrath_n of_o god_n against_o all_o unrighteousness_n and_o ungodliness_n of_o man_n when_o christ_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o who_o break_v the_o least_o of_o his_o commandment_n shall_v be_v call_v least_o in_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n that_o except_o our_o righteousness_n exceed_v the_o righteousness_n of_o the_o scribe_n and_o pharisee_n we_o shall_v in_o no_o wise_n enter_v into_o the_o kingdom_n of_o heaven_n and_o when_o st._n

and_o not_o man_n that_o be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o act_n of_o favour_n and_o grace_n not_o of_o merit_n and_o desert_n though_o god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o justify_v a_o innocent_a man_n when_o he_o believe_v in_o christ_n or_o that_o this_o our_o faith_n in_o christ_n which_o be_v within_o we_o do_v not_o justify_v we_o for_o that_o be_v to_o count_v ourselves_o to_o be_v justify_v by_o some_o act_n or_o virtue_n that_o be_v within_o ourselves_o which_o i_o confess_v sound_n very_o like_o what_o some_o man_n say_v that_o faith_n do_v not_o justify_v we_o as_o our_o own_o act_n but_o as_o it_o apprehend_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n and_o apply_v it_o to_o we_o by_o which_o righteousness_n thus_o apprehend_v by_o faith_n we_o be_v justify_v but_o there_o be_v nothing_o less_o free_o by_o faith_n without_o work_n or_o that_o we_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n in_o christ_n only_o be_v not_o that_o this_o our_o own_o act_n to_o believe_v in_o christ_n or_o this_o our_o faith_n in_o christ_n which_o be_v within_o we_o do_v justify_v we_o and_o deserve_v our_o justification_n unto_o we_o for_o that_o be_v to_o count_v ourselves_o to_o be_v justify_v by_o some_o act_n or_o virtue_n that_o be_v within_o ourselves_o but_o the_o true_a understanding_n and_o mean_v thereof_o be_v that_o although_o we_o hear_v god_n word_n and_o believe_v it_o and_o do_v never_o so_o many_o be_v teach_v in_o that_o homily_n that_o there_o be_v especial_o three_o thing_n which_o must_v go_v together_o in_o our_o justification_n upon_o god_n part_n his_o great_a mercy_n and_o grace_n upon_o christ_n part_n justice_n that_o be_v the_o satisfaction_n of_o god_n justice_n or_o the_o price_n of_o our_o redemption_n by_o the_o offering_n of_o his_o body_n and_o sheddidg_v his_o blood_n with_o fulfil_v of_o the_o law_n perfect_o and_o thorough_o and_o upon_o our_o part_n true_a and_o lively_a faith_n in_o the_o merit_n of_o jesus_n christ_n which_o yet_o be_v not_o we_o but_o by_o god_n work_v in_o we_o this_o be_v a_o much_o more_o intelligible_a way_n of_o explain_v the_o doctrine_n of_o justification_n than_o by_o the_o material_a formal_a efficient_a instrumental_a cause_n and_o suchlike_a term_n of_o art_n which_o need_v more_o explication_n than_o the_o doctrine_n itself_o and_o therefore_o i_o shall_v follow_v this_o method_n and_o reduce_v the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o homily_n under_o these_o three_o head_n what_o be_v god_n part_n what_o be_v christ_n part_n and_o what_o be_v require_v on_o man_n part_n in_o the_o business_n of_o justification_n first_o let_v we_o consider_v what_o be_v god_n part_n in_o the_o justification_n of_o a_o sinner_n and_o that_o be_v the_o mercy_n and_o grace_n of_o god_n which_o express_v itself_o first_o in_o provide_v a_o ransom_n for_o we_o as_o it_o be_v express_v in_o the_o homily_n that_o our_o justification_n do_v come_v free_o by_o the_o mere_a mercy_n of_o god_n and_o of_o so_o great_a and_o free_a mercy_n that_o whereas_o all_o the_o world_n be_v not_o able_a of_o themselves_o to_o pay_v any_o part_n towards_o their_o ransom_n it_o please_v our_o heavenly_a father_n of_o his_o infinite_a mercy_n without_o any_o our_o desert_n or_o deserve_a to_o prepare_v for_o we_o the_o
homily_n by_o many_o scripture-promises_a and_o example_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v consider_v what_o our_o church_n mean_v by_o repentance_n and_o the_o explication_n of_o this_o be_v reduce_v to_o four_o principal_a point_n from_o what_o we_o must_v return_v to_o who_o we_o must_v return_v by_o who_o we_o may_v be_v able_a to_o convert_v and_o the_o manner_n how_o to_o turn_v to_o god_n first_o from_o whence_o or_o from_o what_o thing_n we_o must_v return_v and_o that_o be_v from_o all_o our_o sin_n not_o only_o grosser_n vice_n but_o the_o filthy_a lust_n and_o inward_a concupiscence_n of_o the_o flesh._n all_o these_o thing_n must_v they_o forsake_v that_o will_v true_o turn_v unto_o the_o lord_n and_o repent_v aright_o for_o since_o for_o such_o thing_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n come_v upon_o the_o child_n of_o disobedience_n no_o end_n of_o punishment_n ought_v to_o be_v look_v for_o as_o long_o as_o we_o continue_v in_o such_o thing_n but_o this_o must_v be_v do_v by_o faith_n for_o since_o that_o god_n be_v a_o spirit_n he_o can_v by_o no_o other_o mean_n be_v apprehend_v and_o take_v hold_v upon_o that_o be_v god_n be_v a_o spirit_n we_o can_v see_v he_o with_o bodily_a eye_n nor_o go_v to_o he_o on_o our_o leg_n nor_o take_v hold_v of_o he_o with_o a_o arm_n of_o flesh_n and_o therefore_o this_o metaphor_n of_o return_v to_o god_n and_o go_v be_v absolute_o false_a that_o all_o good_a work_n be_v the_o effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o justify_v faith_n for_o there_o be_v some_o good_a work_n which_o
and_o the_o free_a choice_n of_o the_o divine_a will_n and_o therefore_o though_o we_o may_v conclude_v from_o the_o divine_a nature_n that_o god_n will_v be_v gracious_a and_o compassionate_a to_o sinner_n yet_o we_o can_v certain_o know_v in_o what_o measure_n and_o proportion_v god_n will_v exercise_v this_o grace_n and_o mercy_n without_o a_o express_a declaration_n of_o his_o will_n and_o christ_n be_v send_v the_o father_n prescribe_v his_o work_n and_o he_o finish_v it_o and_o therefore_o to_o make_v christ_n as_o mediator_n the_o fountain_n of_o grace_n be_v a_o derogation_n from_o god_n the_o father_n who_o the_o scripture_n make_v the_o first_o mover_n and_o supreme_a agent_n in_o the_o work_n of_o our_o redemption_n i_o observe_v in_o the_o same_o place_n another_o 209._o acquaintance_n with_o christ_n person_n and_o be_v no_o where_o express_v in_o scripture_n i_o have_v already_o give_v two_o instance_n of_o this_o in_o his_o way_n of_o prove_v the_o naturalness_n of_o vindictive_a justice_n to_o god_n and_o the_o desert_n and_o demerit_n of_o sin_n and_o shall_v now_o add_v some_o more_o the_o doctor_n prove_v from_o the_o deity_n of_o christ_n as_o i_o observe_v in_o my_o former_a discourse_n 206._o the_o endless_a bottomless_a boundless_a grace_n and_o compassion_n that_o be_v in_o he_o mercy_n enough_o for_o the_o great_a the_o elder_a the_o slubborne_a transgressor_n the_o infiniteness_n of_o grace_n with_o respect_n to_o the_o spring_n or_o fountain_n the_o deity_n of_o christ_n will_v answer_v all_o our_o objection_n what_o be_v our_o finite_a guilt_n before_o it_o how_o come_v this_o guilt_n to_o be_v finite_a now_o when_o we_o be_v so_o often_o tell_v that_o the_o demerit_n of_o every_o sin_n be_v infinite_a as_o be_v commit_v against_o a_o infinite_a god_n and_o require_v a_o infinite_a satisfaction_n for_o its_o atonement_n show_v i_o the_o sinner_n that_o can_v spread_v his_o iniquity_n to_o the_o dimension_n if_o i_o may_v so_o say_v of_o this_o grace_n i_o be_o glad_a to_o hear_v the_o doctor_n put_v so_o fair_a a_o sense_n on_o these_o word_n and_o to_o declare_v to_o the_o world_n that_o he_o design_v no_o more_o in_o it_o than_o to_o invite_v all_o sort_n of_o sinner_n 170._o though_o under_o the_o most_o discourage_a qualification_n to_o come_v unto_o christ_n for_o grace_n and_o mercy_n by_o faith_n and_o repentance_n though_o any_o man_n who_o read_v that_o long_a discourse_n about_o a_o endless_a bottomless_a boundless_a grace_n and_o compassion_n in_o christ_n such_o a_o infinite_a grace_n as_o make_v nothing_o of_o our_o finite_a guilt_n as_o all_o the_o sin_n in_o the_o world_n can_v equal_v its_o dimension_n without_o one_o word_n of_o faith_n or_o repentance_n or_o a_o new_a life_n to_o qualify_v we_o for_o this_o mercy_n especial_o if_o withal_o he_o understand_v what_o a_o great_a patron_n the_o doctor_n be_v of_o the_o necessity_n of_o holiness_n and_o obedience_n to_o qualify_v we_o for_o god_n mercy_n as_o appear_v from_o what_o i_o have_v already_o discourse_v above_o will_v not_o easy_o have_v guess_v this_o to_o have_v be_v his_o meaning_n and_o whoever_o write_v a_o book_n which_o can_v be_v understand_v without_o a_o commentary_n ought_v not_o to_o complain_v that_o he_o be_v mistake_v nor_o charge_v his_o reader_n upon_o that_o account_n with_o ignorance_n falsehood_n or_o calumny_n though_o for_o my_o part_n i_o shall_v be_v very_o well_o content_v he_o shall_v write_v another_o book_n consist_v of_o little_a else_o than_o those_o mild_a and_o gentle_a imputation_n of_o falsehood_n and_o calumny_n so_o he_o will_v but_o recant_v or_o at_o least_o handsome_o palliate_v those_o doctrine_n which_o otherwise_o may_v encourage_v bad_a man_n continue_v so_o to_o lay_v claim_n to_o such_o a_o boundless_a and_o bottomless_a mercy_n but_o my_o present_a business_n be_v to_o observe_v how_o the_o doctor_n prove_v that_o there_o be_v such_o a_o boundless_a bottomless_a grace_n in_o christ_n and_o his_o argument_n be_v take_v from_o his_o divine_a nature_n which_o be_v infinite_a for_o when_o the_o conduit_n of_o his_o humanity_n be_v inseparable_o unite_v to_o the_o infinite_a inexhausted_a fonntain_n of_o the_o deity_n who_o can_v look_v into_o the_o depth_n thereof_o if_o now_o there_o be_v grace_n enough_o for_o sinner_n in_o a_o all_o sufficient_a god_n it_o be_v in_o christ._n this_o be_v a_o plain_a instance_n of_o this_o way_n of_o reason_v from_o a_o acquaintance_n with_o christ_n with_o his_o divine_a nature_n which_o the_o scripture_n no_o where_o teach_v and_o which_o be_v weak_a and_o fallacious_a for_o though_o the_o divine_a nature_n be_v infinite_a yet_o the_o exercise_n of_o mercy_n and_o compassion_n be_v regulate_v by_o wisdom_n
