it_o neither_o yet_o have_v provide_v either_o a_o heaven_n for_o the_o godly_a or_o a_o hell_n for_o the_o wicked_a that_o let_v man_n do_v what_o they_o can_v yet_o in_o the_o end_n either_o all_o or_o none_o shall_v be_v save_v etc._n etc._n quest._n how_o be_v we_o to_o resist_v these_o blasphemous_a suggestion_n answ._n first_o we_o shall_v as_o soon_o as_o they_o be_v suggest_v reject_v they_o as_o abominable_a say_v to_o ourselves_o god_n forbid_v that_o i_o shall_v entertain_v such_o a_o blasphemous_a thought_n of_o the_o most_o mighty_a wise_a just_a and_o gracious_a god_n especial_o have_v no_o reason_n for_o it_o but_o the_o false_a suggestion_n of_o the_o devil_n who_o be_v a_o liar_n from_o the_o beginning_n and_o by_o his_o lie_n seek_v my_o destruction_n second_o than_o if_o we_o can_v be_v thâ—s_o rid_v of_o it_o let_v we_o fly_v unto_o the_o lord_n by_o earnest_a prayer_n desire_v he_o to_o enlighten_v our_o mind_n by_o his_o spirit_n that_o we_o may_v clearle_n discern_v his_o truth_n and_o the_o falsehood_n of_o satan_n and_o that_o he_o will_v incline_v our_o heart_n to_o submit_v our_o judgement_n to_o his_o truth_n and_o reject_v satan_n damnable_a lie_n three_o we_o must_v endeavour_v to_o enrich_v our_o mind_n with_o such_o a_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n as_o may_v enable_v we_o to_o answer_v all_o satan_n cavil_n especial_o by_o study_v the_o scripture_n which_o be_v able_a to_o make_v we_o wise_a to_o salvation_n four_o we_o must_v open_v our_o state_n to_o some_o able_a friend_n who_o may_v teach_v we_o how_o to_o confute_v these_o tentation_n and_o by_o all_o mean_v we_o must_v take_v heed_n of_o that_o foolish_a bashfulness_n which_o make_v man_n keep_v the_o devil_n counsel_n to_o their_o destruction_n for_o fear_n of_o shame_v themselves_o whereas_o it_o be_v no_o shame_n to_o be_v subject_a to_o these_o tentation_n which_o the_o dear_a of_o god_n child_n be_v not_o free_v from_o quest._n what_o be_v the_o other_o kind_n of_o blasphemous_a tentation_n answ._n such_o as_o be_v without_o all_o show_n of_o reason_n or_o appearance_n of_o truth_n senceles_o absurd_a and_o no_o less_o admirable_a for_o their_o sottishness_n then_o for_o their_o hellish_a impiety_n and_o these_o can_v without_o tremble_v be_v think_v on_o neither_o do_v satan_n use_v the_o help_n of_o the_o flesh_n herein_o as_o he_o do_v in_o other_o tentation_n it_o be_v no_o fit_a instrument_n for_o this_o employment_n because_o these_o blasphemy_n be_v so_o horrible_o wicked_a that_o they_o be_v above_o the_o conceit_n of_o corrupt_a nature_n but_o be_v the_o immediate_a product_n of_o hell_n satan_n cast_v they_o into_o the_o mind_n like_o wildfire_n with_o great_a swiftness_n and_o violence_n or_o if_o the_o flesh_n be_v use_v herein_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o with_o delight_n but_o with_o fear_n and_o horror_n see_v there_o be_v neither_o pleasure_n nor_o profit_n in_o they_o but_o a_o fearful_a expectation_n of_o speedy_a vengeance_n if_o we_o swallow_v they_o with_o consent_n quest._n what_o be_v satan_n chief_a scope_n in_o these_o tentation_n answ._n first_o he_o have_v no_o hope_n to_o prevail_v with_o a_o christian_a to_o approve_v of_o they_o see_v he_o can_v draw_v a_o profane_a worldling_n thus_o far_o with_o all_o his_o power_n and_o skill_n but_o his_o chief_a aim_n be_v hereby_o to_o work_v astonishment_n in_o they_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v utter_o unfit_a to_o perform_v any_o holy_a exercise_n or_o duty_n which_o they_o owe_v to_o god_n hope_v thereby_o so_o to_o enfeeble_v they_o that_o afterward_o he_o shall_v get_v a_o easy_a victory_n over_o they_o second_o he_o labour_v hereby_o to_o overthrow_v their_o faith_n and_o to_o bring_v they_o to_o utter_v despair_n of_o god_n mercy_n put_v they_o out_o of_o all_o hope_n that_o he_o will_v ever_o pardon_v such_o outrageous_a sin_n see_v they_o do_v so_o impious_o blaspheme_v he_o to_o his_o face_n and_o therefore_o lest_o they_o shall_v multiply_v these_o horrible_a sin_n by_o their_o long_a abode_n in_o this_o life_n and_o so_o increase_v the_o measure_n of_o their_o just_a condemnation_n he_o tempt_v they_o to_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o themselves_o and_o to_o seek_v to_o mitigate_v their_o torment_n by_o hasten_v their_o death_n three_o when_o by_o manifold_a experience_n he_o have_v learned_a that_o by_o these_o suggestion_n he_o little_o advance_v these_o curse_a end_n yet_o such_o be_v his_o inveterate_a malice_n towards_o god_n poor_a saint_n that_o he_o will_v not_o surcease_v to_o pursue_v they_o with_o these_o suggestion_n so_o long_o as_o god_n permit_v he_o that_o he_o may_v at_o least_o turmoil_v and_o vex_v those_o who_o he_o have_v no_o hope_n to_o overcome_v quest._n how_o may_v we_o comfort_v and_o strengthen_v our_o heart_n against_o these_o wicked_a blasphemy_n answ._n first_o consider_v that_o they_o be_v not_o our_o own_o thought_n but_o satan_n suggestion_n and_o therefore_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v charge_v upon_o we_o as_o our_o sin_n but_o shall_v be_v set_v on_o satan_n score_n and_o punish_v upon_o he_o quest._n how_o shall_v we_o know_v that_o they_o be_v satan_n suggestion_n and_o not_o our_o own_o thought_n answ._n firâ—_n in_o that_o they_o be_v so_o outrageous_o wicked_a that_o even_o nature_n though_o corrupt_v be_v not_o capable_a of_o they_o unless_o by_o long_a custom_n of_o malicious_a sin_v against_o god_n it_o become_v plain_o diabolical_a how_o much_o loss_n then_o be_v they_o capable_a of_o they_o who_o have_v receive_v some_o measure_n of_o grace_n and_o in_o the_o uprightness_n of_o their_o heart_n desire_v to_o fear_v love_n and_o serve_v the_o lord_n second_o they_o may_v be_v discern_v to_o be_v from_o satan_n by_o the_o manner_n of_o their_o injection_n which_o be_v not_o voluntary_a and_o upon_o choice_n but_o sudden_a as_o a_o flash_n of_o lightning_n with_o such_o unavoidable_a violence_n that_o they_o can_v be_v prevent_v and_o that_o continual_o one_o follow_v in_o the_o neck_n of_o another_o three_o whereas_o a_o man_n own_o thought_n be_v natural_a work_v no_o extraordinary_a perturbation_n in_o the_o mind_n on_o the_o contrary_a these_o blasphemous_a suggestion_n strike_v the_o heart_n with_o such_o horror_n and_o fear_n that_o thereby_o the_o understanding_n be_v astonish_v the_o heart_n quake_v the_o mind_n be_v distract_v the_o joint_n tremble_v etc._n etc._n second_o consider_v that_o these_o kind_n of_o tentation_n be_v common_a to_o afflict_a christian_n yea_o so_o ordinary_o do_v satan_n fight_v with_o this_o weapon_n that_o he_o dare_v therewith_o assault_n christ_n himself_o the_o unspotted_a lamb_n of_o god_n in_o who_o be_v no_o sin_n three_o consider_v that_o it_o be_v no_o sin_n to_o be_v tempt_v to_o these_o blasphemy_n if_o they_o be_v resist_v as_o it_o be_v no_o fault_n in_o a_o chaste_a person_n if_o a_o filthy_a harlot_n tempt_v he_o to_o uncleanness_n so_o long_o as_o he_o yield_v not_o to_o it_o quest._n but_o how_o shall_v we_o know_v that_o we_o resist_v these_o blasphemy_n answ._n first_o in_o our_o own_o outward_a man_n we_o resist_v they_o when_o we_o do_v not_o actual_o yield_v by_o word_n or_o deed_n so_o as_o that_o our_o yield_a be_v subject_a to_o our_o sense_n second_o inward_o we_o resist_v they_o when_o we_o neither_o approve_v they_o in_o our_o judgement_n nor_o embrace_v they_o with_o our_o will_n nor_o incline_v to_o they_o in_o our_o affection_n with_o like_n and_o delight_n four_o consider_v that_o these_o blasphemous_a susigestion_n be_v not_o evil_a to_o they_o who_o resist_v they_o or_o if_o evil_a yet_o only_o our_o cross_n and_o evil_a of_o punishment_n not_o evil_a of_o sin_n which_o the_o lord_n of_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n turn_v to_o the_o good_a of_o his_o child_n object_n yet_o i_o fear_v that_o i_o have_v so_o much_o revolve_v these_o blasphemous_a tentation_n in_o my_o mind_n and_o have_v be_v so_o negligent_a and_o slow_a in_o reject_v they_o that_o i_o doubt_v much_o i_o have_v yield_v some_o like_n to_o they_o answ._n first_o there_o be_v nothing_o more_o common_a then_o for_o a_o afflict_a conscience_n to_o accuse_v when_o it_o be_v innocent_a and_o to_o lay_v a_o heavy_a burden_n upon_o itself_o where_o the_o lord_n give_v a_o discharge_n second_o but_o suppose_v it_o be_v true_a yet_o there_o be_v no_o cause_n of_o despair_n and_o that_o 1._o because_o this_o sin_n be_v commit_v through_o infirmity_n be_v pardonable_a and_o therefore_o if_o thou_o repent_v and_o
