first_o we_o may_v observe_v the_o infinite_a mercy_n of_o god_n towards_o people_n god_n mercy_n towards_o his_o people_n this_o people_n who_o though_o they_o be_v full_o replenish_v with_o all_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n though_o like_o filthy_a harlot_n they_o have_v forsake_v he_o their_o true_a and_o most_o kind_a husband_n and_o give_v themselves_o to_o commit_v spiritual_a whoredom_n with_o their_o idol_n and_o though_o they_o be_v complete_a and_o consummate_v in_o this_o their_o adultery_n yet_o still_o he_o call_v they_o unto_o he_o again_o by_o his_o prophet_n promise_v upon_o their_o true_a repentance_n mercy_n and_o forgiveness_n so_o jer._n 3._o 1._o thereof_o jer._n 3._o 1._o idolatry_n must_v be_v avoid_v in_o the_o beginning_n and_o occasion_n thereof_o second_o we_o learn_v hence_o that_o as_o we_o be_v most_o careful_o to_o flee_v all_o sin_n and_o to_o subdue_v they_o at_o the_o beginning_n before_o by_o custom_n &_o continuance_n they_o have_v increase_v in_o strength_n so_o especial_o we_o be_v to_o use_v this_o care_n and_o watchfulness_n in_o avoid_v this_o spiritual_a fornication_n and_o all_o mean_n and_o occasion_n thereof_o for_o if_o we_o once_o entertain_v it_o with_o the_o least_o like_n &_o approbation_n we_o shall_v never_o or_o very_o hardly_o reclaim_v ourselves_o till_o like_o common_a harlot_n we_o be_v complete_a and_o full_o replenish_v with_o this_o spiritual_a filthiness_n and_o therefore_o let_v we_o stop_v our_o ear_n against_o those_o shameless_a and_o impudent_a man_n who_o in_o this_o light_n of_o the_o gospel_n dare_v show_v themselves_o to_o be_v patron_n of_o image_n assure_v ourselves_o that_o if_o cast_v god_n commandment_n behind_o our_o back_n which_o have_v as_o well_o forbid_v the_o make_n as_o the_o worship_v of_o idol_n we_o shall_v not_o stay_v here_o but_o shall_v short_o fall_v from_o idol_n make_v to_o idol_n worship_v we_o just_o account_v pander_n and_o bawd_n to_o be_v odious_a and_o most_o abominable_a because_o they_o use_v all_o their_o wit_n and_o endeavour_n to_o allure_v other_o to_o uncleanness_n and_o to_o withdraw_v their_o heart_n and_o affection_n from_o their_o own_o husband_n that_o they_o may_v place_v they_o upon_o adulterer_n and_o sure_o no_o less_o abominable_a shall_v these_o bawd_n and_o pander_n be_v who_o employ_v their_o wit_n and_o learning_n that_o they_o may_v allure_v
overtake_v with_o their_o punishment_n but_o they_o neglect_v this_o example_n which_o the_o very_a sight_n and_o name_n of_o the_o place_n shall_v have_v continual_o call_v to_o their_o remembrance_n and_o go_v forward_o in_o their_o blind_a superstition_n and_o idolatry_n the_o lord_n in_o the_o very_a same_o place_n bring_v upon_o they_o the_o very_a like_o destruction_n the_o use_n which_o we_o be_v to_o make_v hereof_o be_v this_o that_o we_o take_v warning_n by_o the_o example_n of_o other_o and_o make_v profitable_a use_n of_o god_n judgement_n which_o like_o a_o gracious_a judge_n he_o the_o reason_n why_o this_o name_n be_v impose_v verse_n 6._o and_o afterward_o amplify_v by_o way_n of_o comparison_n or_o dissimilitude_n verse_n 7._o the_o second_o degree_n of_o their_o punishment_n be_v simple_o set_v down_o verse_n 6._o she_o conceive_v yet_o again_o and_o bear_v a_o daughter_n and_o verse_n 6_o god_n say_v unto_o he_o call_v her_o name_n lo-ruchamah_a for_o i_o they_o be_v overthrow_v and_o lead_v captive_n unfeigned_o repent_v of_o their_o sin_n the_o lord_n will_v have_v have_v compassion_n on_o they_o and_o receive_v they_o into_o his_o love_n and_o favour_n but_o when_o they_o obstinate_o continue_v in_o their_o impenitency_n the_o lord_n refuse_v to_o show_v mercy_n unto_o they_o and_o this_o he_o signify_v by_o the_o birth_n of_o the_o second_o child_n second_o by_o this_o second_o birth_n the_o lord_n show_v that_o they_o make_v no_o good_a use_n of_o his_o former_a judgement_n but_o grow_v from_o bad_a to_o worse_o and_o therefore_o his_o justice_n require_v that_o he_o shall_v lay_v upon_o they_o a_o second_o punishment_n much_o more_o grievous_a than_o the_o former_a and_o these_o thing_n be_v to_o be_v gather_v out_o of_o her_o second_o conception_n it_o be_v further_a say_v that_o her_o second_o child_n be_v a_o daughter_n by_o which_o he_o intimate_v their_o decline_a both_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o and_o be_v become_v weak_a and_o inconstant_a in_o all_o good_a thing_n second_o he_o show_v their_o declination_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o state_n of_o their_o commonwealth_n for_o whereas_o their_o ancestor_n have_v valiant_o defend_v and_o enlarge_v the_o kingdom_n against_o all_o their_o enemy_n they_o be_v so_o weaken_v partly_o through_o their_o effeminateness_n the_o daughter_n of_o peace_n and_o plenty_n and_o partly_o through_o sedition_n and_o civil_a war_n that_o they_o have_v make_v themselves_o a_o fit_a pray_v for_o their_o enemy_n be_v no_o more_o able_a to_o defend_v themselves_o then_o if_o they_o have_v be_v a_o commonwealth_n of_o woman_n and_o this_o weakness_n and_o infirmity_n be_v signify_v under_o the_o sex_n of_o woman_n in_o the_o scripture_n so_o when_o god_n will_v signify_v that_o the_o babylonian_n shall_v not_o be_v able_a to_o stand_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o their_o enemy_n he_o say_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v like_a woman_n that_o be_v weak_a and_o impotent_a jer._n 50._o 37._o now_o this_o weakness_n in_o their_o state_n proceed_v 37._o jer._n 50._o 37._o from_o their_o weakness_n in_o grace_n virtue_n faith_n and_o constancy_n for_o next_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v be_v the_o name_n call_v her_o name_n lo-ruchamah_a the_o signification_n whereof_o be_v without_o mercy_n or_o not_o obtain_v mercy_n or_o as_o the_o apostle_n paul_n expound_v it_o rom._n 9_o 25._o not_o through_o god_n mercy_n belove_v the_o which_o name_n be_v 25._o rom._n 9_o 25._o give_v to_o signify_v that_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n after_o they_o be_v lead_v captive_a by_o the_o assyrian_n shall_v never_o obtain_v either_o present_o or_o for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v god_n mercy_n to_o be_v restore_v again_o into_o their_o country_n and_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o these_o word_n concern_v the_o doctrine_n imposition_n of_o the_o name_n the_o doctrine_n which_o arise_v from_o punishment_n god_n mercy_n even_o in_o his_o punishment_n hence_o be_v diverse_a first_o i_o may_v observe_v god_n gracious_a goodness_n in_o his_o manner_n of_o punish_v man_n for_o their_o sin_n after_o he_o have_v smite_v they_o once_o he_o do_v not_o present_o strike_v again_o but_o he_o pause_v and_o give_v time_n and_o respite_n that_o they_o may_v make_v profitable_a use_n of_o his_o former_a visitation_n and_o amend_v their_o fault_n for_o which_o they_o be_v punish_v that_o so_o he_o may_v not_o be_v move_v to_o redouble_v their_o punishment_n as_o it_o appear_v in_o his_o deal_n with_o the_o israelite_n in_o this_o place_n whereby_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o he_o take_v no_o pleasure_n in_o our_o pain_n and_o torment_n but_o in_o punish_v aim_v at_o our_o amendment_n that_o so_o we_o may_v be_v eternal_o save_v and_o therefore_o as_o he_o be_v hardly_o draw_v to_o punish_v so_o when_o he_o have_v begin_v he_o be_v loath_a to_o go_v forward_o but_o have_v like_o a_o gracious_a father_n give_v we_o a_o few_o stripe_n he_o lay_v the_o rod_n aside_o expect_v our_o amendment_n that_o so_o he_o may_v no_o more_o punish_v us._n and_o thus_o he_o deal_v with_o the_o israelite_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o judge_n &_o in_o the_o captivity_n of_o babylon_n and_o with_o we_o likewise_o as_o at_o many_o other_o time_n so_o especial_o in_o the_o day_n of_o queen_n mary_n and_o in_o our_o late_a visitation_n second_o we_o may_v observe_v in_o the_o example_n of_o the_o israelite_n judgement_n that_o we_o quick_o forget_v god_n judgement_n how_o soon_o we_o forget_v god_n judgement_n when_o they_o be_v once_o past_a make_v no_o good_a use_n of_o they_o nor_o amend_v those_o fault_n for_o which_o we_o be_v punish_v but_o when_o the_o affliction_n be_v once_o past_a we_o secure_o go_v forward_o in_o sin_n and_o become_v worse_o than_o we_o be_v before_o as_o though_o now_o god_n have_v empty_v his_o quiver_n and_o have_v not_o one_o arrow_n of_o wrath_n and_o vengeance_n more_o to_o shoot_v at_o us._n a_o notable_a example_n hereof_o we_o have_v in_o pharaoh_n yea_o and_o in_o our_o own_o time_n for_o how_o few_o be_v the_o number_n of_o those_o who_o have_v make_v any_o profitable_a use_n of_o god_n late_a visitation_n nay_o how_o many_o be_v there_o who_o as_o though_o have_v escape_v that_o they_o be_v privilege_v from_o all_o other_o be_v grow_v worse_a and_o worse_o this_o be_v a_o miserable_a evil_n of_o which_o the_o lord_n complain_v esa_n 1._o 5._o and_o the_o forerunner_n 5._o esa_n 1._o 5._o of_o utter_a destruction_n for_o as_o the_o father_n
lest_o the_o lord_n see_v we_o uncorrigible_a likewise_o reject_v we_o as_o he_o do_v the_o jew_n for_o if_o god_n spare_v not_o the_o natural_a branch_n let_v we_o take_v heed_n lest_o he_o do_v not_o spare_v we_o who_o be_v but_o wild_a branch_n as_o the_o apostle_n reason_v rom._n 11._o 21._o message_n rom._n 11._o 21._o the_o prophet_n holy_a boldness_n in_o deliver_v his_o message_n five_o we_o be_v to_o observe_v that_o when_o the_o prophet_n threaten_v against_o the_o people_n their_o final_a rejection_n they_o be_v in_o a_o most_o flourish_a and_o prosperous_a estate_n and_o eccles_n 9_o 1._o 2._o nay_o oftentimes_o 2._o eccles_n 9_o 1._o 2._o the_o wicked_a most_o flourish_n for_o a_o time_n and_o the_o godly_a be_v afflict_v as_o appear_v in_o the_o example_n of_o esau_n and_o jacob_n the_o egyptian_n and_o the_o israelite_n saul_n and_o david_n the_o pharisy_n and_o jesus_n christ_n himself_o and_o his_o apostle_n and_o therefore_o if_o we_o judge_v they_o in_o god_n favour_n who_o be_v in_o a_o flourish_a estate_n and_o condemn_v they_o as_o miserable_a who_o be_v in_o affliction_n we_o shall_v justify_v the_o wicked_a and_o condemn_v the_o multiply_v his_o seed_n as_o the_o star_n of_o heaven_n and_o as_o the_o sand_n by_o the_o sea_n side_n the_o which_o he_o shall_v not_o perform_v if_o now_o he_o shall_v reject_v and_o cast_v they_o
