Jehoram Joram was returned to be healed in Jezreel of the wounds which the Syrians † Heb. smote had given him when he fought with Hazael king of Syria And Jehu said If it be your minds then † Heb. let no escaper 80 c. let none go forth nor escape out of the city to go to tell it in Jezreel 16 So Jehu rode in a chariot and went to Jezreel for Joram lay there and Ahaziah king of Judah was come down to see Joram 17 And there stood a watchman on the tower in Jezreel and he spied the company of Jehu as he came and said I see a company And Joram said Take an hors-man and send to meet them and let him say Is it peace 18 So there went one on hors-back to meet him and said Thus saith the king Is it peace And Jehu said What hast thou to do with peace turn thee behinde me And the watchman told saying The messenger came to them but he cometh not again 19 Then he sent out a second on hors-back which came to them and said Thus saith the king Is it peace And Jehu answered What hast thou to do with peace turn thee behinde me 20 And the watchman told saying He came even unto them and cometh not again and the ‖ Or marching driving is like the driving of Jehu the son of Nimshi for he driveth † Heb. in ma●●●ss furiously 21 And Joram said † Heb. hinde Make ready And his chariot was made ready And Joram king of Israel and Ahaziah king of Judah went out each in his chariot and they went out against Jehu and † Heb. found met him in the portion of Naboth the Jezreelite 22 And it came to pass when Joram saw Jehu that he said Is it peace Jehu And he answered What peace so long as the whoredoms of thy mother Jezebel and her witcherafts are so many 23 And Joram turned his hands and fled and said to Ahaziah There is treachery O Ahaziah 24 And Jehu † Heb. filled his hand with a bowe drew a bowe with his full strength and smote Jehoram between his arms and the arrow went out at his heart and he † Heb. bowed sunk down in his chariot 25 Then said Jehu to Bidkar his captain Take up and cast him in the portion of the field of Naboth the Jezreelite for remember how that when I and thou rode together after Ahab his father * 1 King 21.29 the LORD laid this burden upon him 26 Surely I have seen yesterday the † Heb. blouds bloud of Naboth and the bloud of his sons saith the LORD and I will requite thee in this ‖ Or portion plat saith the LORD Now therefore take and cast him into the plat of ground according to the word of the LORD 27 ¶ But when Ahaziah the king of Judah saw this he fled by the way of the garden-house and Jehu followed after him and said Smite him also in the chariot And they did so at the going up to Gur which is by Ibleam and he fled to Megiddo and died there 28 And his servants carried him in a chariot to Jerusalem and buried him in his sepulchre with his fathers in the city of David 29 And in the eleventh year of Joram the son of Ahab began Ahaziah to reign over Judah 30 ¶ And when Jehu was come to Jezreel Jezebel heard of it and she † Heb. put her eyes in painting painted her face and tired her head and looked out at a window 31 And as Jehu entred in at the gate she said Had Zimri peace who slew his master 32 And he lift up his face to the window and said Who is on my side who And there looked out to him two or three ‖ Or chamberlains eunuchs 33 And he said Throw her down So they threw her down and some of her bloud was sprinkled on the wall and on the horses and he trod her under foot 34 And when he was come in he did eat and drink and said Go see now this cursed woman and bury her for she is a kings daughter 35 And they went to bury her but they found no more of her then the scull and the feet and the palms of her hands 36 Wherefore they came again and told him and he said This is the word of the LORD which he spake † Heb. by the hand of by his servant Elijah the Tishbite saying * 1 King 21.23 In the portion of Jezreel shall dogs eat the flesh of Jezebel 37 And the carcase of Jezebel shall be as dung upon the face of the field in the portion of Jezreel so that they shall not say This is Jezebel CHAP. X. 1 Jehu by his letters causeth seventy of Ahabs children to be beheaded 8 He excuseth the fact by the prophesie of Elijah 12 At the shearing-house he slayeth two and fourty of Abazjahs brethren 15 He taketh Jehonadab into his company 18 By subtilty he destroyeth all the worshippers of Baal 29 Jehu followeth Jeroboams sins 32 Hazael oppresseth Israel 34 Jeboahaz succeedeth Jehu ANd Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria and Jehu wrote letters and sent to Samaria unto the rulers of Jezreel to the elders and to † Heb. nourish●●● them that brought up Ahabs children saying 2 Now assoon as this letter cometh to you seeing your masters sons are with you and there are with you chariots and horses a fenced city also and armour 3 Look even out the best and meetest of your masters sons and set him on his fathers throne and fight for your masters house 4 But they were exceedingly afraid and said Behold two kings stood not before him how then shall we stand 5 And he that was over the house and he that was over the city the elders also and the bringers up of the children sent to Jehu saying We are thy servants and will do all that thou shalt bid us we will not make any king do thou that which is good in thine eyes 6 Then he wrote a letter the second time to them saying If ye be † Heb. for me mine and if ye will hearken unto my voice take ye the heads of the men your masters sons and come to me to Jezreel by to morrow this time now the kings sons being seventy persons were with the great men of the city which brought them up 7 And it came to pass when the letter came to them that they took the kings sons and slew seventy

XIX 2 Wine and women seduce wise men 7 Say not all thou hearest 17 Reprove thy friend without anger 22 There is no wisdom in wickedness A Labouring man that is given to drunkenness shall not be rich and he that contemneth small things shall fall by little and little 2 Wine and women will make men of understanding to fall away and he that cleaveth to harlots will become impudent 3 Moths and worms shall have him to heritage and a bold man shall be taken away 4 * Josh 22.11 He that is hasty to give credit is light-minded and he that sinneth shall offend against his own soul 5 Whoso taketh pleasure in wickedness shall be condemned but he that resisteth pleasures crowneth his life 6 He that can rule his tongue shall live without strife and he that hateth babbling shall have less evil 7 Rehearse not unto another that which is told unto thee and thou shalt fare never the worse 8 Whether it be ‖ Or of friend or foe to a friend or foe talk not of other mens lives and if thou can't without offence reveal them not 9 For he heard and observed thee and when time cometh he will ‖ Or shew his hatred hate thee 10 If thou hast heard a word let it die with thee and be bold it will not burst thee 11 A fool travaileth with a word as a woman in labour of a childe 12 As an arrow that sticketh in a mans thigh so is a word within a fouls ‖ Or heart belly 13 * Lev. 10.17 Mat. 18.15 Admonish a friend it may be he hath not done it and if he have done it that he do it no more 14 ‖ Or reprove Admonish thy friend it may be hath not said it and if he have that he speak it not again 15 Admonish a friend for many times it is a slander and beleeve not every tale 16 There is one that slippeth in his speech but not ‖ Or willingly from his heart and who is he that hath not offended with his * Jam. 3.2 tongue 17 ‖ Or reprove Admonish thy neighbour before thou threaten him and not being angry give place to the law of the most High 18 The fear of the Lord is the first step ‖ Or of receiving him to be accepted of him and wisdom obtaineth his love 19 The knowledge of the commandments of the Lord is the doctrine of life and they that do things that please him shall receive the fruit of the tree of immortality 20 The fear of the Lord is all wisdom and in all wisdom is the performance of the law and the knowledge of his omnipotency 21 If a servant say to his master I will not do as it pleaseth thee though afterward he do it he angreth him that nourisheth him 22 The knowledge of wickedness is not wisdom neither at any time the counsel of sinners prudence 23 There is a wickedness and the same an abomination and there is a fool wanting in wisdom 24 He that hath small understanding and feareth God is better then one that hath much wisdom and transgresseth the law of the most High 25 There is an exquisite subtilty and the same is unjust and there is one that turneth aside to make judgement appear and there is a wise man that ‖ Or judgeth justi fieth in judgement 26 There is a wicked man that hangeth down his head ‖ Or in black sadly but inwardly he is full of deceit 27 Casting down his countenance and making as if he heard not where he is not known he will do thee a mischief before thou be aware 28 And if for want of power he be hindred from sinning yet when he findeth opportunity he will do evil 29 A man may be known by his look and one that hath understanding by his countenance when thou meetest him 30 A mans attire and excessive laughter and gate shew what he is CHAP. XX. 1 Of silence and speaking 10 Of gifts and gain 18 Of slipping by the tongue 24 Of lying 27 Of divers advertisements THere is a reproof that is not ‖ Or seasonable comely again some man holdeth his tongue and he is wise 2 It is much better to reprove then to be angry secretly and he that confesseth his fault shall be preserved from hurt 3 How good is it when thou art reproved to shew repentance for so shalt thou escape wilful sin 4 As is the lust of * Chap. 30.20 an eunuch to deflower a virgin so is he that executeth judgement with violence 5 There is one that keepeth silence and is found wise and another by much babbling becometh hateful 6 Some man holdeth his tongue because he hath not to answer and some keepeth silence * Ec●les 3.7 knowing his time 7 A wise man will hold his * Ch. 32.4 tongue till he see opportunity but a babbler and a fool will regard no time 8 He that useth many words shall be abhorred and he that taketh to himself authority therein shall be hated 9 There is a sinner that hath good success in evil things and there is a gain that turneth to loss 10 There is a gift that shall not profit thee and there is a gift whose recompence is double 11 There is an abasement because of glory and there is that lifteth up his head from a low estate 12 There is that buyeth much for a little and repayeth it seven-fold 13 * Chap. 6. ●● A wise man by his words maketh himself beloved but the ‖ Or pleasant conceits graces of fools shall be ‖ Or lost or spilt poured out 14 The gift of a fool shall do thee no good when thou hast it neither yet of the envious for his necessity † Gr. for his eyes are many for one to receive for he looketh to receive many things for one 15 He giveth little and upbraideth much he openeth his mouth like a crier to day he lendeth and to morrow will he ask it again such a one is to be hated of God and man 16 The fool saith I have no friends I have no thank for all my good deeds and they that eat my bread speak evil of me 17 How oft and of how many shall he be laughed to scorn for he knoweth not aright what it is to have and it is all one unto him as if he had it not 18 To slip upon a pavement is better then to slip with the tongue so the fall of the wicked shall come speedily 19 ‖ Or an unpleasant fellow An unseasonable tale will always be in the mouth of the unwise 20 A

and let us make three tabernacles one for thee and one for Moses and one for Elias not knowing what he said 34 While he thus spake there came a cloud and overshadowed them and they feared as they entred into the cloud 35 And there came a voice out of the cloud saying This is my beloved Son hear him 36 And when the voice was past Jesus was found alone and they kept it close and told no man in those days any of those things which they had seen 37 ¶ * Mat. 17. ●4 And it came to pass that on the next day when they were come down from the hill much people met him 38 And behold a man of the company cried out saying Master I beseech thee look upon my son for he is mine onely childe 39 And so a spirit taketh him he suddenly crieth out it teareth him that he someth again bruising him hardly departeth from him 40 And I besought thy disciples to cast him out they could not 41 And Jesus answering said O faithless and perverse generation how long shall I be with you and suffer you Bring thy son hither 42 And as he was yet a coming the devil threw him down and tare him and Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit and healed the childe and delivered him again to his father 43 ¶ And they were all amazed at the mighty power of God But while they wondred every one at all things which Jesus did he said unto his disciples 44 * Mat. 1● 22 Let these sayings sink down into your ears for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men 45 But they understood not this saying and it was hid from them that they perceived it not and they feared to ask him of that saying 46 ¶ * Mat. 18.1 Mar. 9. ●4 Then there arose a reasoning among them which of them should be greatest 47 And Jesus perceiving the thought of their heart took a childe and set him by him 48 And said unto them Whosoever shall receive this childe in my name receiveth me and whosoever shall receive me receiveth him that sent me for he that is least among you all the same shall be great 49 ¶ * Mar. 9.33 And John answered and said Master we saw one casting out devils in thy name and we forbad him because he followeth not with us 50 And Jesus said unto him Forbid him not for he that is not against us is for us 51 ¶ And it came to pass when the time was come that he should be received up he stedfastly set his face to go to Jerusalem 52 And sent messengers before his face and they went and entred into a village of the Samaritans to make ready for him 53 And they did not receive him because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem 54 And when his disciples James and John saw his they said Lord wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven and confirme them even as * 2 Kin. 1.10 Elias did 55 But he turned and rebuked them and said Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of 56 For the Son of man is not come to destroy mens lives but to save them And they went to another village 57 ¶ * Mat. 8. ●9 And it came to pass that as they went in the way a certain man said unto him Lord I will follow thee whithersoever thou goest 58 And Jesus said unto him Foxes have hoses and birds of the air have nests but the Son of man hath not where to lay his head 59 * Mat. 8 2● And he said unto another Follow me But he said Lord suffer me first to go bury my father 60 Jesus said unto him Let the dead bury their dead but go thou and preach the kingdom of God 61 And another also said Lord I will follow thee but let me first go bid them farewel which are at home at my house 62 And Jesus said unto him No man having put his hand to the plough and looking back is fit for the kingdom of God CHAP. X. 1 Christ sendeth out at once seventy disciples to work miracles and to preach 17 admonisheth them to be humble and wherein to rejoyce 21 thanketh his Father for his grace 23 magnifieth the happy estate of his church 25 teacheth the lawyer how to attain eternal life and to take every one for his neighbour that needeth his mercy 41 reprehendeth Martha and commendeth Mary her sister AFter * Mat. 10. ● these things the Lord appointed other seventy also and sent them two and two before his face into every city and place whither he himself would come 2 Therefore said he unto them * Mat. 9.37 The harvest truly is great but the labourers are few pray ye therefore the Lord of the harvest that he would send forth labourers into his harvest 3 Go your ways * Mat. 10.16 behold I send you forth as lambs among wolves 4 Carry neither purse nor scrip nor shoes and salute no mam by the way 5 * Mat. 10.11 And into whatsoever house ye enter first say Peace be to this house 6 And if the son of peace be there your peace shall rest upon it if not it shall turn to you again 7 And in the same house remain eating and drinking such things as they give for the labourer is worthy of his hire Go not from house to house 8 And into whatsoever city ye enter and they receive you eat such things as are set before you 9 And heal the sick that are therein and say unto them The kingdom of God is come high unto you 10 But into whatsoever city ye enter and they receive you not go your ways out into the streets of the same and say 11 Even the very dust of your city which cleaveth on us we do wipe off against you notwithstanding be ye sure of this that the kingdom of God is come nigh unto you 12 But I say unto you that it shall be more tolerable in that day for Sodom then for that city 13 * Mat. 15.21 Wo unto thee Chorazin wo unto thee Bethsaida for if the mighty works had been done in Tyre and Sidon which have been done in you they had a great while ago repented sitting in sackcloth ashes 14 But it shall be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgement then for you 15 And thou Capernatim which art exalted to heaven shalt be thrust down to hell 16 * Mat. 10.40 He that heareth you heareth me and he that despiseth you despiseth me and he that despiseth me despiseth him that sent me 17 ¶ And the seventy returned again with joy saying Lord even the devils are subject unto us through thy name 18 And he said unto them I beheld Satan as lightning fall from heaven 19 Behold I give unto you power to tread on serpents scorpions over all the power of the enemy
