do_v hear_v the_o gospel_n and_o according_o do_v live_v move_v with_o threaten_n and_o promise_n therein_o contain_v yet_o without_o the_o loss_n of_o the_o excellent_a motive_n of_o which_o we_o have_v speak_v whereof_o if_o any_o man_n doubt_v and_o think_v these_o not_o to_o be_v compatible_a or_o can_v stand_v together_o namely_o the_o threat_n of_o hell_n and_o glory_n of_o heaven_n with_o the_o motive_n of_o god_n will_v let_v he_o consider_v that_o when_o our_o saviour_n say_v except_o you_o also_o repent_v you_o shall_v all_o likewise_o perish_v in_o this_o threaten_a be_v two_o thing_n to_o be_v note_v first_o the_o punishment_n threaten_v second_o the_o will_n of_o god_n wherewith_o god_n threaten_v and_o this_o be_v his_o will_n that_o we_o shall_v serve_v he_o arid_v not_o perish_v the_o true_a servant_n of_o god_n aught_o to_o obey_v this_o precept_n not_o that_o he_o may_v avoid_v the_o punishment_n but_o because_o god_n who_o threaten_v will_v have_v we_o to_o repent_v and_o not_o to_o fall_v into_o that_o punishment_n so_o be_v mindful_a that_o god_n desire_n be_v we_o shall_v serve_v he_o and_o not_o fall_v into_o so_o great_a a_o evil_a as_o stoop_v to_o our_o frailty_n and_o to_o move_v we_o to_o do_v as_o our_o frailty_n require_v and_o that_o promise_n and_o threaten_n in_o scripture_n be_v thus_o to_o be_v understand_v may_v appear_v by_o that_o first_o and_o great_a covenant_n of_o serve_v god_n with_o all_o the_o heart_n etc._n etc._n which_o he_o do_v not_o sufficient_o perform_v 21._o mat._n 21._o who_o towards_o god_n do_v not_o bestow_v all_o his_o power_n to_o serve_v he_o and_o both_o to_o desire_v celestial_a glory_n and_o abhor_v the_o pain_n of_o hell_n as_o well_o desire_v that_o as_o detest_a this_o in_o the_o it_o be_v not_o the_o young_a man_n raske_n alone_o if_o thou_o will_v be_v perfect_a sell_v all_o thou_o have_v and_o give_v unto_o the_o poor_a but_o every_o man_n part_n be_v in_o that_o service_n this_o be_v well_o patternd_a out_o unto_o we_o by_o the_o son_n of_o majesty_n itself_o the_o son_n of_o god_n who_o forsake_v all_o thing_n on_o earth_n who_o sacred_a life_n be_v exercise_v with_o many_o grievous_a labour_n not_o that_o that_o most_o holy_a and_o princely_a person_n stand_v need_n of_o they_o but_o because_o it_o much_o concern_v we_o to_o imitate_v those_o sacred_a step_n he_o all_o the_o soul_n with_o all_o the_o mind_n with_o all_o the_o strength_n with_o all_o the_o heart_n with_o all_o the_o affection_n all_o the_o soul_n with_o all_o the_o life_n all_o the_o mind_n with_o all_o the_o understanding_n all_o the_o strength_n with_o all_o the_o external_a thing_n of_o the_o body_n it_o be_v the_o part_n of_o the_o heart_n to_o know_v of_o the_o soul_n to_o will_n of_o the_o mind_n to_o be_v able_a of_o the_o strength_n from_o the_o heart_n soul_n and_o will_n to_o know_v will_n and_o be_v able_a nor_o only_o with_o the_o good_a health_n of_o the_o body_n with_o strength_n beauty_n agility_n and_o other_o gift_n but_o also_o with_o our_o riches_n dignity_n and_o authority_n to_o glorify_v god_n and_o do_v he_o due_a and_o meet_a obedience_n so_o that_o whatsoever_o good_a thing_n we_o can_v do_v in_o heart_n soul_n mind_n and_o strength_n god_n require_v of_o every_o one_o under_o the_o necessity_n of_o a_o commandment_n yea_o when_o all_o be_v do_v that_o be_v command_v we_o we_o may_v say_v we_o be_v unprofitable_a servant_n if_o he_o be_v worthy_a of_o reprehension_n who_o go_v about_o to_o do_v some_o necessary_a and_o profitable_a thing_n shall_v slight_o cast_v it_o off_o and_o put_v himself_o into_o some_o base_a and_o abject_a business_n how_o much_o more_o be_v he_o to_o be_v blame_v who_o be_v bear_v to_o this_o end_n that_o with_o all_o his_o heart_n soul_n mind_n &_o strength_n he_o shall_v serve_v the_o lord_n who_o be_v most_o worthy_a thereof_o and_o from_o who_o there_o be_v most_o benefit_n to_o be_v expect_v yet_o omit_v this_o and_o betake_v himself_o to_o the_o service_n of_o the_o creature_n &_o vanity_n of_o the_o world_n which_o do_v sudden_o vanish_v and_o bring_v much_o harm_n with_o they_o as_o if_o all_o be_v to_o be_v blame_v who_o serve_v not_o god_n in_o this_o exact_a manner_n how_o much_o more_o be_v they_o suable_a to_o a_o severe_a penalty_n who_o have_v dedicate_v themselves_o by_o a_o special_a function_n to_o his_o service_n as_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n his_o familiar_n in_o house_n and_o table_n how_o exact_o ought_v they_o to_o follow_v the_o step_n of_o he_o that_o have_v call_v they_o 19_o math._n 19_o say_v follow_v i_o which_o be_v speak_v to_o all_o sort_n of_o man_n we_o can_v but_o gather_v thus_o much_o of_o every_o man_n duty_n out_o of_o it_o that_o it_o be_v not_o enough_o that_o we_o do_v the_o thing_n we_o do_v with_o love_n but_o of_o love_n and_o for_o love_n for_o these_o be_v the_o footstep_n which_o he_o command_v we_o to_o follow_v so_o we_o must_v not_o fulfil_v something_o of_o that_o be_v write_v but_o the_o whole_a nor_o be_v it_o sufficient_a in_o his_o service_n that_o we_o do_v our_o duty_n with_o love_n or_o love_n accompany_v it_o but_o it_o behove_v we_o to_o do_v it_o of_o love_n and_o for_o love_n we_o see_v the_o servant_n serve_v his_o master_n with_o love_n who_o love_v his_o lord_n and_o master_n but_o yet_o do_v it_o not_o for_o love_n see_v he_o will_v not_o serve_v he_o except_o he_o expect_v a_o reward_n from_o he_o but_o he_o shall_v indeed_o serve_v he_o with_o love_n and_o for_o love_n if_o he_o serve_v undoubted_o he_o do_v all_o thing_n with_o love_n and_o for_o love_n see_v that_o be_v the_o most_o sublime_a manner_n of_o work_v therefore_o so_o must_v we_o do_v albeit_o we_o can_v do_v it_o with_o such_o perfection_n as_o he_o do_v therefore_o we_o must_v not_o think_v that_o god_n command_v we_o to_o follow_v he_o in_o do_v only_o and_o not_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v too_o see_v it_o be_v to_o no_o purpose_n to_o do_v if_o the_o manner_n of_o do_v aright_o be_v absent_a namely_o to_o do_v with_o love_n and_o for_o love_n for_o we_o can_v suspect_v that_o so_o excellent_a magnificent_a and_o liberal_a a_o lord_n as_o this_o will_v teach_v we_o a_o doctrine_n of_o small_a use_n and_o profit_n but_o of_o singular_a moment_n so_o that_o we_o observe_v therein_o as_o well_o the_o manner_n as_o matter_n 4_o instruction_n that_o the_o cruel_a slaughter_n which_o sin_n have_v make_v in_o man_n soul_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o such_o
it_o but_o it_o suffice_v not_o he_o that_o be_v true_o addict_v unto_o god_n to_o give_v part_n unto_o god_n but_o the_o whole_a so_o that_o the_o whole_a affection_n must_v be_v employ_v in_o god_n or_o in_o that_o which_o be_v whole_o direct_v to_o he_o therefore_o whatsoever_o be_v vain_a in_o this_o love_n must_v be_v cast_v away_o see_v it_o be_v certain_a that_o nothing_o can_v be_v order_v and_o direct_v towards_o god_n which_o be_v more_o love_a in_o the_o creature_n then_o in_o god_n the_o creator_n our_o love_n towards_o all_o person_n ought_v to_o be_v carry_v with_o so_o great_a affection_n as_o can_v proceed_v from_o that_o affection_n which_o we_o have_v towards_o god_n all_o other_o affection_n be_v cast_v off_o that_o that_o affection_n may_v have_v place_n which_o we_o owe_v unto_o god_n and_o to_o the_o cast_v away_o of_o these_o thing_n it_o shall_v not_o profit_v a_o little_a to_o remember_v what_o we_o have_v speak_v before_o of_o vain_a joy_n together_o with_o the_o six_o instruction_n now_o therefore_o see_v in_o part_n we_o have_v speak_v what_o kind_n of_o love_n we_o ought_v to_o be_v and_o that_o we_o must_v cast_v away_o the_o love_n that_o be_v not_o such_o we_o will_v add_v a_o example_n to_o open_v this_o manner_n of_o love_a to_o which_o purpose_n we_o need_v but_o call_v to_o mind_n the_o example_n of_o that_o good_a son_n of_o who_o love_n towards_o his_o father_n we_o speak_v in_o the_o former_a chapter_n by_o who_o imitation_n we_o collect_v it_o be_v fit_a to_o love_v our_o heavenly_a father_n so_o now_o let_v we_o see_v in_o the_o imitation_n of_o he_o how_o we_o ought_v to_o love_v the_o servant_n of_o our_o father_n namely_o all_o that_o be_v in_o the_o world_n friend_n and_o enemy_n therefore_o we_o must_v add_v in_o that_o example_n that_o the_o father_n so_o belove_v of_o his_o son_n who_o yet_o expect_v no_o benefit_n from_o his_o father_n have_v a_o servant_n who_o he_o only_o love_v but_o yet_o want_v all_o kind_n of_o necessary_n as_o well_o for_o himself_o as_o for_o his_o servant_n save_v what_o his_o son_n do_v give_v unto_o he_o now_o this_o servant_n be_v odious_a and_o hateful_a to_o this_o son_n and_o in_o nothing_o profitable_a to_o he_o or_o to_o his_o mind_n and_o if_o the_o son_n shall_v only_o seek_v himself_o and_o his_o own_o benefit_n and_o pleasure_n he_o will_v cast_v off_o this_o servant_n yet_o unwilling_a to_o do_v any_o thing_n that_o may_v displease_v his_o father_n but_o rather_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_n to_o do_v the_o thing_n that_o may_v please_v his_o father_n induce_v thereunto_o by_o no_o other_o respect_n he_o maintain_v this_o serâ—ant_n in_o his_o house_n as_o one_o of_o his_o â—onnes_n or_o most_o dear_o belove_a servant_n and_o so_o speak_v unto_o he_o â—nd_n entreat_v he_o that_o if_o at_o any_o time_n he_o will_v seem_v to_o leave_v the_o house_n the_o son_n will_v be_v grieâ—â—ed_v and_o will_v entreat_v he_o to_o tarry_v fear_v lest_o his_o father_n shall_v be_v grieve_v for_o his_o absence_n such_o love_n must_v that_o be_v which_o we_o ought_v to_o carry_v towards_o our_o neighbour_n namely_o that_o consider_v they_o be_v so_o much_o belove_v of_o god_n that_o he_o give_v himself_o to_o death_n for_o they_o when_o as_o yet_o all_o of_o they_o be_v his_o enemy_n we_o also_o shall_v love_v they_o all_o so_o much_o help_v they_o in_o all_o that_o be_v good_a and_o necessary_a for_o they_o as_o well_o in_o body_n as_o in_o soul_n even_o so_o much_o i_o say_v as_o we_o be_v wont_v to_o love_v they_o who_o do_v much_o please_v and_o delight_v we_o and_o that_o also_o albeit_o their_o conversation_n be_v odious_a and_o grievous_a unto_o we_o &_o so_o to_o speak_v unto_o they_o and_o provide_v for_o they_o in_o all_o necessary_n even_o as_o for_o those_o who_o be_v much_o belove_v of_o that_o our_o father_n and_o lord_n who_o both_o will_v it_o shall_v be_v so_o and_o have_v also_o so_o command_v it_o to_o be_v do_v and_o with_o any_o injury_n give_v we_o great_a occasion_n to_o increase_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n for_o after_o this_o occasion_n of_o so_o great_a good_a which_o come_v unto_o we_o join_v with_o the_o commandment_n of_o god_n who_o will_v have_v it_o so_o what_o excuse_n can_v we_o have_v if_o we_o do_v not_o with_o intimous_a and_o ardent_a bowel_n love_v then_o that_o load_n we_o with_o evil_n chief_o whilst_o we_o consider_v that_o god_n himself_o will_v happy_o afterward_o take_v from_o such_o our_o pierce_v cut_v we_o all_o excellent_a and_o high_a duty_n as_o it_o often_o befall_v many_o other_o sinner_n therefore_o the_o good_a servant_n of_o god_n he_o must_v never_o be_v account_v who_o rejoice_v not_o at_o the_o affliction_n and_o injury_n which_o be_v cast_v upon_o he_o for_o his_o lord_n if_o therefore_o he_o shall_v esteem_v himself_o happy_a when_o he_o be_v set_v upon_o with_o injury_n and_o adversity_n the_o only_a will_n of_o serve_v god_n make_v he_o no_o less_o stable_n in_o love_v he_o who_o his_o inordinate_a affection_n make_v odious_a then_o he_o who_o the_o abundance_n of_o benefit_n compel_v to_o love_n yet_o it_o must_v be_v observe_v that_o although_o love_n must_v be_v equal_o bear_v unto_o all_o yet_o first_o it_o must_v be_v show_v both_o in_o affection_n and_o good_a work_n towards_o they_o that_o be_v give_v to_o virtue_n and_o holiness_n of_o life_n 3_o the_o last_o thing_n which_o i_o reserve_v for_o this_o place_n be_v the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o &_o how_o he_o must_v love_v himself_o that_o will_v true_o love_v himself_o to_o love_v ourselves_o be_v a_o thing_n so_o natural_a that_o whosoever_o will_v hereof_o write_v may_v well_o do_v it_o without_o fear_n of_o provoke_v any_o to_o anger_n see_v our_o appetite_n do_v increase_v in_o our_o love_n towards_o ourselves_o that_o albeit_o we_o be_v enrich_v with_o great_a riches_n yet_o do_v we_o judge_v they_o but_o small_a because_o we_o love_v ourselves_o &_o labour_n advancement_n to_o great_a matter_n for_o this_o cause_n our_o excellent_a master_n the_o son_n of_o god_n desire_v that_o we_o shall_v love_v our_o neighbour_n very_o much_o as_o those_o for_o who_o he_o lay_v down_o his_o life_n that_o he_o may_v show_v in_o few_o word_n how_o much_o he_o will_v have_v we_o to_o love_v they_o he_o give_v this_o rule_n thou_o shall_v love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o 22._o math._n 22._o but_o see_v the_o blindness_n of_o sin_n have_v so_o invade_v we_o that_o it_o have_v take_v from_o we_o the_o judgement_n and_o knowledge_n how_o we_o ought_v to_o love_v ourselves_o it_o be_v fit_a by_o the_o direction_n of_o the_o gospel_n we_o provide_v for_o this_o evil_n therefore_o we_o will_v say_v that_o he_o true_o love_v himself_o who_o observe_v these_o three_o rule_n 1_o that_o with_o all_o his_o strength_n he_o procure_v every_o thing_n whence_o he_o understand_v any_o good_a may_v come_v unto_o he_o 2_o that_o he_o shun_v every_o thing_n which_o may_v bring_v any_o harm_n damage_n or_o evil_n unto_o he_o 3_o that_o albeit_o many_o difficulty_n and_o rub_n to_o the_o attain_v of_o that_o which_o be_v good_a do_v offer_v themselves_o yet_o he_o shall_v not_o refuse_v to_o oppose_v himself_o against_o they_o of_o these_o three_o see_v we_o have_v often_o speak_v in_o this_o discourse_n we_o will_v only_o touch_v some_o few_o thing_n which_o be_v more_o necessary_a to_o be_v know_v that_o we_o may_v learn_v aright_o to_o love_v ourselves_o 1_o as_o concern_v the_o first_o of_o these_o we_o will_v observe_v that_o this_o cannon_n be_v every_o moment_n very_o necessary_a hereunto_o that_o the_o thing_n which_o be_v good_a may_v be_v make_v very_o good_a namely_o that_o in_o every_o thing_n i_o repeat_v it_o again_o in_o every_o thing_n speak_v general_o which_o we_o shall_v desire_v or_o obtain_v two_o point_n may_v be_v consider_v 1_o be_v the_o good_a which_o from_o this_o thing_n come_v unto_o we_o or_o may_v come_v unto_o us._n 2_o that_o it_o be_v acceptable_a unto_o god_n that_o this_o good_a thing_n shall_v come_v unto_o us._n therefore_o he_o that_o love_v himself_o and_o desire_v great_a good_a thing_n to_o himself_o must_v little_o esteem_v the_o good_a that_o may_v befall_v he_o from_o any_o thing_n he_o do_v or_o desire_v i_o say_v
than_o the_o carcase_n why_o then_o shall_v we_o not_o often_o or_o at_o least_o once_o in_o a_o year_n bestow_v a_o new_a suit_n upon_o the_o soul_n or_o else_o patch_v up_o the_o old_a one_o but_o take_v heed_n of_o patch_v for_o god_n love_v a_o new_a creature_n he_o will_v have_v all_o new_a or_o none_o at_o all_o ambr._n ambr._n in_o a_o word_n he_o be_v right_o renew_v that_o be_v change_v from_o the_o darkness_n of_o his_o sin_n into_o the_o light_n and_o grace_n of_o virtue_n that_o be_v before_o more_o stink_a than_o a_o dunghill_n be_v now_o become_v more_o white_a than_o snow_n 2_o because_o continual_a labour_n even_o in_o profitable_a thing_n and_o worthy_a of_o all_o our_o love_n be_v a_o werisoâ—nnesse_n to_o the_o spirit_n &_o make_v it_o less_o able_a to_o perform_v the_o duty_n require_v therefore_o ease_n thyself_o for_o some_o time_n and_o disburden_v thy_o mind_n of_o those_o serious_a thing_n that_o thou_o may_v rest_v and_o resume_v strength_n the_o mind_n must_v have_v some_o remission_n that_o it_o may_v rise_v up_o the_o more_o sharp_a as_o we_o must_v not_o incessant_o command_v fruitful_a field_n for_o their_o fertility_n will_v soon_o be_v exhaust_v if_o they_o rest_v not_o so_o the_o daily_a labour_n of_o the_o mind_n break_v the_o strength_n of_o it_o a_o little_a remission_n and_o relaxation_n will_v recover_v strength_n but_o dulness_n of_o mind_n arise_v from_o assiduity_n of_o labour_n of_o purpose_n man_n use_v to_o unbend_v their_o bow_n that_o in_o their_o time_n they_o may_v with_o profit_n be_v bend_v again_o which_o if_o they_o have_v no_o relaxation_n will_v by_o be_v continual_o bend_v loose_v the_o strength_n of_o hit_v the_o mark_n so_o in_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o mind_n virtue_n be_v sometime_o reserve_v when_o by_o discretion_n it_o be_v pretermit_v that_o afterward_o it_o may_v the_o more_o strong_o hit_v vice_n by_o how_o much_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n it_o wise_o cease_v from_o smite_v a_o key_n if_o it_o be_v turn_v one_o way_n shut_v the_o lock_n but_o turn_v another_o way_n open_v it_o so_o the_o mind_n intend_v outward_a thing_n dispose_v and_o keep_v they_o but_o turn_v unto_o god_n and_o inward_a thing_n open_v the_o door_n of_o god_n mercy_n to_o fetch_v out_o the_o treasure_n of_o heavenly_a gift_n except_o thou_o shall_v move_v thyself_o towards_o this_o side_n and_o except_o thou_o shall_v receive_v from_o god_n that_o which_o thou_o give_v thou_o shall_v not_o have_v any_o thing_n at_o all_o to_o give_v wise_o therefore_o do_v that_o good_a father_n speak_v ber._n ber._n to_o wait_v the_o inward_a faculty_n of_o it_o the_o imagination_n shall_v be_v torment_v with_o horrible_a form_n and_o representation_n the_o memory_n with_o continual_a remembrance_n of_o thing_n evil_a past_a present_a and_o to_o come_v the_o understanding_n so_o obscure_v that_o it_o can_v conceive_v nothing_o that_o be_v please_v the_o will_v so_o wifull_a and_o indurate_a in_o sin_n that_o it_o can_v will_v nothing_o but_o the_o hatred_n of_o god_n and_o good_a man_n but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o that_o be_v to_o be_v consider_v for_o yet_o rest_v the_o privation_n of_o the_o infinite_a goodness_n possession_n and_o fruition_n of_o god_n the_o father_n son_n and_o holy_a ghost_n 4_o the_o singular_a perfection_n of_o the_o body_n as_o the_o impassibility_n the_o clarity_n and_o glory_n the_o agility_n and_o subtlety_n 5_o the_o joy_n which_o every_o one_o of_o the_o bless_a shall_v enjoy_v in_o all_o their_o sense_n no_o sense_n but_o shall_v have_v his_o full_a delight_n and_o that_o in_o a_o more_o perfect_a manner_n then_o can_v in_o this_o world_n be_v enjoy_v or_o by_o man_n heart_n conceive_v 6_o last_o these_o seven_o point_n follow_v may_v in_o one_o or_o more_o meditation_n be_v handle_v as_o every_o one_o shall_v think_v fit_a 1_o the_o excellency_n of_o that_o place_n viz._n the_o greatness_n the_o blessedness_n the_o riches_n the_o glory_n of_o that_o heavenly_a mansion_n 2_o the_o blessedness_n of_o the_o body_n which_o shall_v be_v endow_v with_o those_o four_o most_o admirable_a quality_n for_o it_o shall_v be_v altogether_o most_o impassable_a most_o bright_a and_o glorious_a most_o nimble_a and_o as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v altogether_o spiritual_a so_o that_o without_o any_o let_v it_o can_v penetrate_v all_o other_o solid_a body_n 3_o the_o blessedness_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o chief_o the_o wisdom_n of_o it_o because_o it_o shall_v see_v god_n face_n to_o face_n and_o all_o thing_n in_o he_o also_o that_o most_o high_a and_o sovereign_a love_n of_o god_n and_o our_o neighbour_n and_o the_o infinite_a pleasure_n and_o exultation_n arise_v therefrom_o 4_o the_o most_o pleasant_a society_n of_o all_o the_o bless_a saint_n the_o good_a thing_n of_o that_o eternal_a happiness_n together_o 7_o the_o eternity_n and_o lastingnesse_n of_o this_o felicity_n and_o happiness_n which_o no_o time_n shall_v ever_o end_v but_o this_o virtue_n out_o unto_o we_o second_o what_o he_o speak_v or_o do_v concern_v that_o virtue_n remember_v some_o sentence_n thereof_o three_o why_o he_o say_v and_o do_v so_o for_o my_o information_n and_o imitation_n and_o thus_o in_o one_o wecke_fw-mi one_o may_v meditate_v on_o the_o seven_o more_o principal_a virtue_n of_o christ_n on_o the_o lord_n day_n meditate_v of_o his_o love_n monday_n his_o humility_n tuesday_n his_o patience_n wednesday_n his_o obedience_n thursday_n his_o meekness_n friday_n his_o poverty_n saturday_n his_o chastity_n 3_o last_o to_o meditate_v the_o eight_o blessedness_n 5._o math._n 5._o and_o in_o every_o of_o they_o to_o ponder_v these_o three_o thing_n first_o the_o sentence_n itself_o which_o contain_v two_o point_n the_o virtue_n and_o thereward_n of_o that_o virtue_n second_o how_o excellent_o this_o virtue_n shine_v in_o christ_n three_o how_o far_o i_o be_o from_o that_o virtue_n how_o great_a profit_n it_o will_v bring_v i_o if_o i_o have_v it_o and_o what_o harm_n i_o have_v by_o want_v it_o 13_o how_o to_o meditate_v on_o the_o creature_n of_o god_n it_o be_v a_o most_o divine_a truth_n that_o by_o the_o due_a consideration_n of_o the_o creature_n of_o god_n man_n may_v attain_v to_o a_o very_a high_a pitch_n of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o creator_n of_o they_o 1._o rom._n 1._o for_o there_o be_v not_o the_o least_o creature_n in_o the_o world_n but_o do_v demonstrate_v evident_o the_o power_n the_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o its_o maker_n
memory_n that_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n it_o shall_v be_v a_o thing_n of_o more_o dignity_n to_o eat_v meat_n with_o this_o scope_n and_o motive_n then_o with_o any_o other_o motive_n as_o namely_o that_o we_o enjoy_v the_o glory_n of_o heaven_n to_o fast_o or_o pour_v out_o our_o blood_n for_o the_o truth_n not_o that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o excellent_a thing_n to_o desire_v the_o possession_n of_o heaven_n glory_n but_o for_o that_o this_o motive_n be_v so_o much_o more_o excellent_a than_o the_o other_o as_o the_o whole_a world_n over-values_a a_o nut_n shell_n that_o therefore_o we_o may_v be_v induce_v through_o this_o happy_a motive_n to_o do_v all_o that_o we_o do_v all_o the_o motion_n of_o body_n and_o soul_n bend_v unto_o this_o end_n we_o must_v be_v very_a intent_n that_o we_o never_o pass_v from_o one_o work_n to_o another_o nor_o never_o begin_v any_o work_n until_o we_o feel_v our_o self_n to_o be_v move_v unto_o it_o for_o this_o that_o we_o think_v or_o know_v that_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o do_v it_o for_o which_o purpose_n we_o must_v know_v that_o god_n with_o a_o infinite_a jubilee_n and_o desire_n wish_v to_o be_v belove_v or_o possess_v of_o all_o man_n and_o with_o the_o same_o will_n wish_v that_o with_o every_o motion_n of_o love_n which_o in_o every_o moment_n of_o our_o life_n we_o work_v we_o shall_v love_v he_o and_o how_o often_o soever_o we_o shall_v love_v or_o do_v any_o other_o thing_n we_o shall_v do_v it_o be_v attract_v thereunto_o with_o this_o his_o infinite_a will_n so_o that_o this_o be_v the_o rule_n we_o must_v follow_v in_o all_o thing_n that_o whensoever_o we_o will_v do_v any_o thing_n we_o must_v never_o begin_v it_o until_o have_v first_o cast_v our_o eye_n upon_o god_n we_o shall_v perceive_v that_o we_o desire_v this_o for_o the_o infinite_a joy_n which_o he_o have_v of_o this_o our_o good_a work_n which_o be_v sensible_o know_v that_o god_n be_v most_o worthy_a to_o be_v obey_v and_o serve_v in_o this_o so_o sublime_a a_o nature_n then_o obey_v this_o will_n we_o bring_v into_o execution_n whatsoeucr_n we_o determine_v as_o altogether_o forgetful_a of_o our_o own_o good_a for_o just_a it_o be_v that_o his_o bless_a will_n who_o create_v all_o will_n shall_v have_v that_o pre-eminence_n and_o dominion_n over_o all_o will_n that_o not_o only_o they_o shall_v obey_v he_o in_o all_o he_o command_v but_o also_o that_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v we_o shall_v do_v it_o as_o forget_v to_o perform_v our_o own_o proper_a will_n and_o obtain_v our_o own_o glory_n but_o that_o both_o in_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o god_n holy_a will_n may_v be_v fulfil_v without_o any_o other_o respect_n but_o because_o as_o many_o man_n think_v themselves_o rich_a when_o indeed_o they_o be_v but_o poor_a reckon_v their_o chicken_n in_o the_o shell_n so_o many_o think_v they_o feel_v the_o say_a motive_n and_o esteem_v themselves_o to_o have_v do_v great_a thing_n do_v at_o length_n find_v they_o be_v but_o small_a for_o it_o easy_o fall_v out_o that_o one_o consider_v the_o sublimity_n that_o consist_v in_o love_v of_o god_n and_o desirous_a of_o those_o excellent_a and_o true_a good_a thing_n and_o also_o be_v in_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n and_o state_n of_o salvation_n have_v a_o enkindle_a desire_n to_o enjoy_v that_o love_n and_o yet_o that_o desire_n be_v no_o perfect_a work_n for_o albeit_o that_o desire_n be_v of_o a_o thing_n that_o be_v perfect_a yet_o be_v that_o desire_v no_o perfect_a work_n if_o the_o perfect_a motive_n of_o the_o mind_n be_v want_v namely_o that_o such_o desire_n proceed_v from_o a_o strong_a will_v we_o have_v to_o desire_v such_o love_n because_o god_n will_v have_v we_o to_o enjoy_v it_o to_o our_o advauncement_n which_o he_o great_o desire_v the_o same_o that_o we_o say_v of_o this_o desire_n may_v also_o be_v speak_v of_o many_o who_o be_v carry_v with_o a_o great_a zeal_n of_o salvation_n of_o soul_n or_o good_a of_o the_o republic_n and_o such_o as_o be_v hungry_a and_o thirsty_a for_o righteousness_n and_o weep_v for_o the_o evilles_n which_o they_o see_v and_o know_v to_o be_v in_o the_o world_n all_o which_o thing_n be_v good_a but_o yet_o may_v be_v most_o abject_a and_o defective_a if_o they_o want_v the_o say_v true_a motive_n and_o scope_n therefore_o we_o must_v be_v very_o regardful_a that_o whatsoever_o we_o do_v we_o be_v move_v unto_o it_o with_o this_o motive_n and_o that_o we_o have_v speak_v of_o these_o word_n aught_o to_o be_v understand_v and_o practise_v in_o all_o those_o infinite_a motion_n which_o do_v offer_v themselves_o to_o the_o soul_n of_o what_o kind_n soever_o yea_o in_o the_o resist_n of_o every_o temptation_n for_o we_o must_v so_o labour_v that_o god_n will_v may_v reign_v in_o we_o as_o that_o nothing_o must_v arise_v from_o our_o will_n alone_o it_o be_v true_a that_o such_o as_o enter_v into_o this_o course_n shall_v find_v much_o difficulty_n and_o spend_v much_o time_n in_o acquire_v this_o excellent_a motive_n but_o let_v none_o be_v discourage_v for_o do_v not_o many_o worldly_a man_n labour_v all_o their_o life_n for_o vile_a thing_n of_o no_o worth_n &_o yet_o do_v not_o obtain_v they_o but_o we_o shall_v sure_o obtain_v this_o gift_n if_o with_o intimous_a humility_n we_o labour_v for_o it_o with_o perseverance_n but_o he_o ought_v great_o to_o reprove_v himself_o who_o shall_v think_v it_o be_v of_o any_o estimation_n dignity_n or_o price_n to_o observe_v these_o thing_n and_o yet_o shall_v not_o for_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o reward_n promise_v which_o be_v to_o obtain_v the_o say_a motive_n be_v stir_v up_o to_o seek_v it_o and_o sure_o it_o be_v not_o amiss_o to_o prae-admonish_a all_o man_n that_o at_o the_o beginning_n great_a coldness_n will_v happen_v unto_o he_o that_o direct_v his_o work_n after_o so_o high_a a_o pitch_n do_v all_o thing_n to_o god_n alone_o and_o he_o may_v wonder_v that_o have_v take_v the_o more_o sublime_a way_n yet_o he_o shall_v find_v less_o devotion_n as_o he_o may_v wonder_v that_o approach_v to_o the_o fire_n yet_o feel_v it_o grow_v more_o cold_a but_o we_o must_v know_v that_o whoso_o do_v well_o consider_v the_o cause_n hereof_o shall_v find_v that_o of_o necessity_n such_o coldness_n will_v seize_v upon_o he_o and_o yet_o his_o work_n be_v of_o no_o less_o worth_n for_o the_o cause_n hereof_o be_v for_o that_o we_o neither_o do_v nor_o love_v any_o thing_n more_o for_o our_o own_o proper_a good_a as_o we_o be_v wont_a and_o be_v natural_a unto_o we_o but_o for_o the_o only_a love_n of_o god_n we_o remove_v from_o we_o the_o root_n from_o whence_o common_o and_o natural_o all_o joy_n and_o pleasure_n be_v wont_a to_o spring_v that_o be_v our_o own_o good_a and_o quiet_a and_o we_o assume_v another_o good_a namely_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n for_o the_o rest_n and_o end_n of_o our_o labour_n which_o be_v a_o supernatural_a thing_n and_o unaccustomed_a to_o we_o no_o wonder_n if_o it_o bring_v much_o pain_n to_o make_v such_o a_o change_n from_o this_o arise_v that_o lukewarmenesse_a until_o we_o be_v accustom_v to_o feel_v esteem_v price_n love_n and_o much_o more_o to_o value_n god_n glory_n then_o our_o own_o as_o the_o thing_n which_o we_o love_v much_o more_o and_o have_v get_v this_o than_o we_o shall_v approach_v the_o fire_n that_o will_v not_o suffer_v any_o cold_a fit_a to_o tarry_v on_o us._n now_o the_o end_n be_v know_v for_o which_o we_o must_v do_v all_o thing_n some_o may_v admire_v that_o see_v the_o sacred_a scripture_n chief_o the_o gospel_n be_v so_o perfect_a and_o require_v such_o exact_a obedience_n yet_o it_o seem_v not_o ever_o to_o propose_v this_o end_n and_o motive_n when_o it_o admonish_v commend_v &_o prohibit_v but_o for_o the_o most_o part_n either_o threaten_v punishment_n or_o invite_v by_o promise_a glory_n to_o this_o i_o say_v that_o our_o bless_a redeemer_n the_o son_n of_o god_n the_o author_n of_o all_o evangelicall_a docttine_n be_v in_o himself_o most_o perfect_a do_v often_o in_o his_o own_o person_n take_v upon_o he_o the_o thing_n which_o belong_v to_o our_o frailty_n and_o infirmity_n that_o he_o may_v descend_v to_o our_o frailty_n as_o flee_v hide_v himself_o serve_v death_n etc._n etc._n so_o his_o pleasure_n be_v to_o write_v his_o doctrine_n in_o such_o word_n as_o our_o frail_a and_o miserable_a condition_n require_v who_o for_o the_o most_o part_n be_v move_v to_o do_v all_o thing_n either_o for_o hope_n of_o glory_n or_o fear_v of_o punishment_n but_o yet_o observe_v withal_o that_o as_o our_o saviour_n take_v upon_o he_o these_o our_o infirmity_n with_o great_a perfection_n and_o love_n so_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n
of_o he_o now_o we_o must_v know_v that_o the_o excellency_n of_o prayer_n that_o it_o may_v be_v imperious_a and_o command_v a_o blessing_n do_v not_o only_o consist_v herein_o that_o we_o demand_v some_o excellent_a thing_n but_o with_o all_o and_o much_o more_o that_o we_o have_v a_o sublimate_v and_o high_a motive_n and_o scope_n and_o the_o motive_n that_o shall_v set_v we_o to_o pray_v must_v be_v to_o believe_v that_o our_o lord_n god_n will_v that_o we_o shall_v have_v what_o we_o ask_v and_o he_o will_v have_v we_o to_o ask_v that_o we_o may_v thereby_o be_v dispose_v to_o his_o service_n for_o bless_a be_v the_o bread_n which_o he_o eat_v who_o eat_v to_o this_o end_n that_o he_o may_v live_v and_o live_a may_v be_v employ_v in_o increase_v in_o the_o love_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o his_o god_n for_o so_o the_o ask_n of_o bread_n and_o whatsoever_o else_o with_o a_o such_o motive_n be_v much_o esteem_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n beside_o of_o such_o a_o mind_n we_o must_v be_v that_o if_o we_o think_v it_o not_o acceptable_a unto_o god_n that_o we_o obtain_v that_o which_o we_o most_o desire_v forthwith_o as_o much_o as_o be_v in_o we_o we_o must_v neither_o desire_v nor_o ask_v it_o the_o hungry_a soul_n for_o the_o most_o part_n by_o the_o famine_n that_o oppress_v he_o be_v move_v to_o ask_v bread_n but_o so_o be_v not_o he_o who_o right_o pray_v unto_o god_n he_o must_v ask_v meat_n and_o necessary_a grace_n and_o glory_n not_o chief_o for_o that_o he_o have_v need_n of_o these_o but_o for_o that_o the_o lord_n god_n will_v that_o we_o shall_v have_v they_o expect_v only_o our_o prayer_n that_o he_o may_v give_v they_o unto_o we_o so_o that_o the_o will_n of_o god_n desirous_a that_o we_o shall_v have_v these_o thing_n must_v more_o move_v we_o to_o ask_v and_o desire_v our_o own_o good_a than_o the_o joy_n and_o glory_n which_o we_o hope_v may_v accrue_v unto_o we_o thereby_o therefore_o the_o manner_n of_o pray_v aught_o to_o be_v that_o our_o soul_n have_v attain_v to_o a_o habit_n of_o ask_v that_o which_o god_n desire_v above_o any_o other_o thing_n and_o exercise_v by_o many_o act_n of_o so_o ask_v it_o not_o chief_o for_o our_o own_o good_a but_o for_o that_o his_o most_o holy_a will_n be_v most_o worthy_a to_o be_v desire_v above_o all_o desireable_n whatsoever_o we_o shall_v ask_v let_v it_o be_v immix_v and_o interweave_v with_o such_o a_o habit_n and_o all_o the_o word_n of_o our_o prayer_n let_v they_o be_v join_v to_o the_o act_n of_o willing_a and_o desire_v whatsoever_o we_o shall_v ask_v for_o this_o cause_n that_o god_n desire_v that_o we_o shall_v have_v it_o whereby_o we_o may_v thus_o become_v his_o more_o acceptable_a servant_n and_o have_v the_o great_a love_n towards_o he_o happy_a be_v they_o that_o can_v thus_o pray_v for_o in_o few_o day_n they_o shall_v grow_v to_o be_v potent_a man_n in_o the_o lord_n to_o perform_v all_o the_o foresay_a thing_n be_v necessary_a the_o 2._o and_o 6._o instruction_n i_o will_v hereof_o give_v this_o example_n for_o many_o do_v pray_v with_o the_o some_o motive_n yet_o speed_v not_o for_o the_o purpose_n some_o man_n ask_v virtue_n use_v grant_v to_o some_o good_a end_n know_v that_o god_n have_v command_v we_o to_o ask_v of_o he_o necessary_n he_o ask_v instant_o acknowledge_v his_o own_o unworthiness_n persever_n in_o this_o man_n of_o ask_v and_o feel_v in_o his_o prayer_n some_o â—â—dste_v of_o sweetness_n and_o divine_a love_n now_o some_o think_v this_o prayer_n to_o proceed_v from_o a_o perfect_a motive_n and_o scope_n but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o albeit_o the_o prayer_n be_v devout_a and_o good_a but_o if_o you_o ask_v what_o it_o want_v i_o answer_v there_o be_v this_o want_v that_o he_o ask_v not_o of_o love_n albeit_o with_o love_n therefore_o i_o say_v it_o suffice_v not_o that_o the_o motive_n be_v perfect_a that_o he_o love_v and_o have_v all_o other_o thing_n but_o he_o must_v also_o be_v move_v to_o ask_v of_o love_n and_o not_o for_o the_o love_n of_o the_o thing_n desire_v albeit_o yet_o even_o the_o love_n of_o the_o thing_n may_v be_v keep_v with_o much_o perfection_n so_o that_o in_o act_v it_o be_v resire_v to_o this_o that_o therefore_o it_o may_v be_v love_v because_o god_n will_v that_o we_o shall_v love_v that_o thing_n which_o now_o be_v not_o so_o in_o the_o former_a kind_n and_o therefore_o exceed_v the_o bound_n of_o prayer_n therefore_o many_o consider_v this_o have_v come_v to_o know_v that_o the_o love_n of_o themselves_o be_v hide_v under_o the_o shadow_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o that_o it_o be_v true_a that_o albeit_o they_o love_v god_n yet_o be_v they_o not_o move_v with_o this_o love_n in_o act_n while_o they_o pray_v but_o with_o the_o love_n of_o themselves_o albeit_o not_o with_o a_o ill_a love_n whereby_o they_o be_v move_v to_o ask_v that_o which_o they_o do_v because_o it_o be_v good_a this_o will_v be_v more_o easy_o understand_v by_o that_o which_o often_o fall_v out_o among_o such_o as_o love_v one_o another_o that_o one_o ask_v something_o of_o another_o and_o that_o with_o the_o love_n wherewith_o he_o love_v he_o yet_o not_o of_o or_o for_o the_o love_n which_o he_o have_v towards_o he_o of_o who_o he_o ask_v but_o for_o the_o love_n of_o himself_o and_o his_o own_o benefit_n therefore_o as_o before_o be_v say_v we_o must_v not_o ask_v so_o of_o god_n but_o we_o must_v ask_v with_o and_o for_o his_o love_n that_o be_v we_o must_v actual_o perceive_v a_o desire_n of_o obtain_v that_o we_o ask_v whereby_o god_n by_o that_o may_v receive_v from_o we_o a_o acceptable_a obedience_n sure_o great_a and_o necessary_a be_v the_o attention_n that_o we_o may_v know_v the_o difference_n of_o these_o love_n for_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n necessary_a to_o be_v know_v and_o many_o think_v they_o have_v go_v aright_o in_o this_o business_n but_o look_v near_o into_o the_o thing_n they_o have_v find_v it_o to_o be_v only_o the_o imagination_n of_o the_o true_a love_n of_o god_n and_o themselves_o to_o be_v far_o from_o it_o indeed_o he_o therefore_o believe_v and_o know_v himself_o to_o be_v in_o the_o right_a way_n who_o continual_o build_v as_o upon_o his_o guide_n in_o the_o way_n upon_o a_o actual_a desire_n of_o obtain_v by_o prayer_n these_o or_o these_o grace_n that_o god_n may_v rejoice_v to_o see_v he_o so_o beautify_v and_o that_o he_o may_v grow_v in_o his_o love_n and_o although_o at_o the_o begin_n of_o this_o exercise_n many_o shall_v not_o only_o feel_v that_o they_o do_v not_o increase_v in_o devotion_n but_o rather_o to_o have_v make_v shipwreck_n of_o that_o which_o they_o have_v before_o for_o which_o they_o shall_v be_v much_o grieve_v in_o their_o soul_n yet_o let_v they_o go_v on_o cheerful_o in_o this_o great_a work_n and_o let_v they_o not_o admire_v that_o they_o feel_v this_o diminution_n of_o devotion_n for_o in_o that_o he_o find_v in_o himself_o this_o coldness_n and_o indevotion_n he_o shall_v perform_v a_o far_o more_o worthy_a duty_n than_o before_o while_o he_o seem_v to_o taste_v a_o great_a sweetness_n and_o contentment_n for_o this_o contentment_n be_v wont_a to_o arise_v from_o the_o love_n of_o himself_o albeit_o not_o evil_a which_o yet_o be_v to_o be_v abandon_v that_o one_o may_v be_v whole_o addict_v to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n which_o be_v best_a of_o all_o for_o when_o it_o arise_v from_o the_o love_n of_o ourselves_o which_o be_v very_o great_a we_o find_v great_a sweetness_n and_o pleasure_n in_o it_o but_o that_o love_n be_v discard_v the_o love_n of_o god_n above_o entertain_v which_o at_o the_o beginning_n be_v but_o small_a little_a sweetness_n and_o devotion_n be_v feel_v but_o this_o love_n increase_v the_o pleasure_n and_o devotion_n will_v also_o increase_v for_o illustration_n whereof_o our_o own_o experience_n will_v serve_v we_o see_v that_o two_o stick_n do_v burn_v together_o the_o one_o being_n dry_a and_o easy_o fire_v the_o other_o not_o so_o yet_o the_o fire_n of_o the_o one_o make_v the_o other_o be_v green_a and_o not_o so_o apt_a to_o burn_v to_o flame_n and_o as_o itself_o do_v but_o if_o you_o remove_v they_o asunder_o you_o shall_v find_v that_o stick_n which_o be_v not_o so_o dry_a to_o loose_v both_o his_o flame_n and_o heat_n too_o and_o to_o keep_v it_o from_o go_v quite_o out_o he_o must_v be_v enforce_v either_o to_o use_v the_o bellows_n or_o else_o re-match_n it_o with_o the_o former_a which_o first_o set_v it_o on_o fire_n in_o like_a manner_n our_o love_n of_o god_n be_v not_o so_o hot_a and_o inflame_v of_o itself_o if_o yet_o it_o be_v join_v to_o the_o love_n
he_o must_v little_o esteem_v that_o as_o it_o be_v his_o own_o good_a if_o it_o be_v compare_v to_o the_o second_o namely_o that_o it_o be_v the_o service_n of_o god_n and_o the_o fulsilling_a of_o his_o holy_a will_n flow_v from_o thence_o and_o to_o this_o point_n the_o second_o instruction_n serve_v well_o let_v we_o observe_v that_o every_o one_o whilst_o he_o love_v himself_o do_v great_o desire_v to_o better_o either_o his_o ornament_n or_o else_o all_o his_o household_n furniture_n and_o all_o thing_n else_o that_o he_o have_v if_o it_o be_v not_o such_o as_o he_o will_v have_v it_o and_o so_o must_v he_o do_v who_o spiritual_o love_v himself_o for_o our_o lord_n god_n have_v give_v we_o a_o precious_a ornament_n or_o pearl_n wherewith_o at_o all_o time_n to_o enrich_v ourselves_o this_o pearl_n we_o have_v but_o cover_v with_o brass_n or_o copper_n whilst_o we_o desire_v any_o thing_n to_o our_o own_o good_a or_o profit_n nor_o must_v we_o ever_o rest_v until_o by_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o the_o high_a there_o be_v such_o a_o change_n make_v that_o our_o appetite_n which_o be_v ever_o agitate_a and_o toss_v up_o and_o down_o in_o we_o wish_v our_o own_o profit_n may_v now_o only_o regard_v those_o thing_n wherewith_o god_n be_v delight_v chief_o that_o thing_n be_v such_o as_o that_o not_o only_a god_n will_v that_o we_o shall_v have_v it_o but_o
