thing_n whereby_o the_o mind_n be_v make_v more_o skilful_a and_o ready_a and_o the_o spirit_n more_o fit_a and_o apt_a to_o perform_v those_o exercise_n unto_o which_o they_o have_v addict_v themselves_o and_o wherein_o they_o have_v continue_v so_o that_o such_o a_o habit_n be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o light_n in_o the_o spirit_n and_o in_o the_o soul_n whereby_o the_o action_n there_o of_o be_v govern_v in_o like_a manner_n we_o find_v in_o the_o will_n desire_n and_o in_o that_o power_n o_o desire_v which_o be_v in_o the_o soul_n four_o thing_n to_o be_v consider_v namely_o natural_a inclination_n action_n habit_n and_o affection_n which_o intermingle_v themselves_o in_o every_o one_o of_o the_o other_o all_o these_o thing_n be_v good_a of_o their_o own_o nature_n even_o as_o nature_n itself_o be_v consider_v as_o god_n have_v create_v she_o but_o as_o nature_n be_v corrupt_v through_o sin_n so_o be_v it_o with_o these_o thing_n by_o reason_n of_o that_o disorder_n which_o the_o nature_n of_o sin_n have_v bring_v unto_o they_o affection_n but_o let_v we_o first_o speak_v of_o natural_a inclination_n and_o then_o we_o will_v prosecute_v the_o rest_n as_o therefore_o the_o mind_n have_v his_o natural_a principle_n of_o knowledge_n so_o the_o will_n have_v her_o natural_a inclination_n and_o affection_n which_o of_o their_o own_o nature_n be_v good_a as_o they_o be_v take_v from_o that_o first_o nature_n create_v of_o god_n neither_o will_v they_o at_o any_o time_n be_v wicked_a if_o there_o be_v no_o excess_n in_o they_o proceed_v from_o nature_n corrupt_v which_o afterward_o breed_v in_o we_o such_o inclination_n and_o affection_n as_o be_v altogether_o evil_a and_o damnable_a we_o love_v ourselves_o natural_o our_o wife_n our_o child_n our_o kinsfolk_n and_o our_o friend_n yea_o we_o be_v by_o nature_n so_o incline_v to_o this_o love_n that_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o we_o we_o shall_v not_o only_o not_o be_v man_n but_o not_o deserve_v so_o much_o as_o to_o be_v account_v and_o take_v for_o beast_n no_o not_o for_o the_o wild_a most_o savage_a and_o venomous_a beast_n that_o can_v be_v for_o we_o see_v by_o experience_n what_o great_a inclination_n &_o affection_n there_o be_v in_o every_o one_o of_o they_o towards_o their_o little_a one_o therefore_o when_o s._n paul_n make_v a_o beaderoll_n of_o the_o vice_n and_o sin_n of_o such_o man_n as_o be_v most_o vicious_a and_o execrable_a and_o as_o it_o be_v monster_n of_o nature_n 2._o he_o say_v express_o that_o they_o be_v without_o natural_a affection_n 3_o which_o indeed_o can_v be_v clean_o root_v out_o of_o any_o nature_n live_v unless_o it_o be_v altogether_o monstrous_a and_o unnatural_a for_o it_o be_v a_o affection_n which_o be_v as_o it_o be_v a_o beam_n of_o the_o love_n that_o god_n bear_v coward_n all_o his_o creature_n and_o which_o he_o cause_v to_o shine_v in_o they_o so_o that_o it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o they_o which_o be_v capable_a of_o any_o affection_n of_o love_n shall_v not_o love_v their_o own_o blood_n and_o their_o like_a especial_o man_n wherefore_o if_o this_o love_n and_o this_o affection_n be_v well_o rule_v and_o order_v it_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v vicious_a that_o contrariwise_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n condemn_v as_o monster_n those_o man_n that_o want_v it_o and_o therefore_o god_n do_v not_o forbid_v and_o condemn_v this_o love_n and_o affection_n in_o his_o law_n so_o far_o forth_o as_o it_o be_v rule_v thereby_o but_o he_o approve_v it_o &_o appoint_v it_o to_o be_v the_o rule_n of_o our_o love_n towards_o our_o neighbour_n 43._o when_o he_o say_v thou_o shall_v love_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o thyself_o but_o when_o this_o love_n &_o affection_n be_v disorder_v in_o we_o it_o be_v not_o only_o vicious_a but_o also_o as_o it_o be_v the_o original_n and_o fountain_n of_o all_o other_o vice_n and_o sin_n whereas_o if_o it_o be_v well_o order_v &_o rule_v according_a to_o the_o will_n &_o law_n of_o god_n it_o will_v be_v as_o it_o be_v the_o fountain_n and_o wellspring_n of_o all_o virtue_n for_o we_o shall_v not_o love_v ourselves_o but_o in_o god_n and_o through_o he_o nor_o consequent_o our_o wife_n nor_o our_o child_n nor_o our_o friend_n nor_o any_o other_o creature_n whatsoeur_fw-fr whereas_o clean_o contrariwise_o we_o set_v god_n aside_o and_o seek_v nothing_o but_o ourselves_o and_o the_o thing_n of_o the_o world_n therefore_o this_o love_n and_o affection_n be_v now_o so_o unruly_a through_o sin_n be_v so_o violent_a in_o we_o that_o it_o withdraw_v we_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o creature_n to_o love_v the_o devil_n and_o his_o wicked_a work_n because_o it_o seem_v to_o we_o that_o he_o be_v a_o great_a friend_n unto_o we_o then_o god_n affection_n for_o whereas_o the_o holy_a spirit_n do_v resist_v and_o set_v himself_o against_o our_o evil_a affection_n and_o will_v have_v we_o to_o bridle_v they_o satan_n on_o the_o contrary_a part_n let_v they_o loose_a &_o not_o only_o give_v we_o over_o to_o follow_v our_o perverse_a and_o vicious_a affection_n with_o full_a sway_n and_o liberty_n but_o also_o provoke_v and_o thrust_v we_o forward_o with_o great_a vehemency_n whereby_o we_o may_v judge_v what_o love_n and_o affection_n a_o man_n may_v carry_v towards_o creature_n in_o those_o thing_n wherein_o they_o may_v be_v contrary_a unto_o he_o and_o with_o what_o fury_n and_o rage_n he_o may_v be_v lead_v against_o they_o that_o resist_v his_o disorder_a affection_n see_v he_o carry_v such_o a_o affection_n towards_o god_n his_o creator_n therefore_o saint_n paul_n speak_v of_o wicked_a man_n that_o shall_v be_v

in_o sorrow_n the_o heart_n dry_v up_o and_o gather_v itself_o in_o so_o it_o cause_v the_o face_n which_o be_v the_o image_n of_o it_o to_o retire_v and_o draw_v back_o yea_o it_o deprive_v the_o face_n of_o all_o colour_n and_o cause_v it_o to_o fall_v away_o brief_o it_o mar_v all_o health_n and_o have_v for_o continual_a companion_n sigh_n plaint_n groan_n tear_n and_o weep_v and_o oftentimes_o gnash_v of_o tooth_n as_o it_o be_v write_v of_o the_o damn_a because_o of_o that_o sorrow_n and_o indignation_n in_o which_o they_o be_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o torment_n which_o they_o suffer_v it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o most_o of_o these_o thing_n serve_v as_o a_o remedy_n against_o sorrow_n for_o howsoever_o grief_n shut_v up_o the_o heart_n as_o we_o have_v say_v yet_o by_o groan_v sigh_v and_o weep_v the_o heart_n do_v in_o some_o sort_n open_v itself_o as_o if_o it_o will_v come_v forth_o to_o breathe_v least_o be_v whole_o shut_v up_o with_o sorrow_n it_o shall_v be_v stifle_v again_o tear_n be_v give_v unto_o we_o to_o testify_v our_o grief_n and_o to_o manifest_v it_o to_o other_o that_o we_o may_v move_v they_o to_o have_v pity_n and_o compassion_n on_o we_o and_o to_o help_v and_o succour_v us._n they_o serve_v we_o further_a to_o declare_v what_o compassion_n we_o have_v of_o other_o man_n sorrow_n and_o grief_n tear_n which_o use_n be_v very_o necessary_a for_o we_o to_o get_v and_o preserve_v friendship_n one_o towards_o a_o other_o and_o for_o our_o mutual_a comfort_n and_o consolation_n for_o we_o be_v great_o comfort_v when_o we_o see_v any_o take_v pity_n and_o compassion_n of_o us._n wherefore_o when_o we_o can_v not_o otherwise_o solace_v they_o that_o be_v grieve_v but_o only_o by_o declare_v that_o we_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o their_o heaviness_n and_o for_o those_o evilles_n which_o they_o suffer_v yet_o do_v that_o afford_v great_a consolation_n and_o although_o it_o seem_v a_o easy_a matter_n to_o give_v this_o comfort_n yet_o be_v it_o hard_o than_o many_o think_v it_o be_v for_o before_o we_o can_v find_v this_o in_o we_o we_o must_v first_o have_v love_n in_o our_o heart_n which_o cause_v we_o to_o open_v our_o bowel_n and_o move_v we_o to_o compassion_n towards_o our_o like_a that_o we_o may_v weep_v with_o they_o that_o weep_v as_o we_o must_v rejoice_v also_o with_o they_o that_o rejoice_v according_a as_o saint_n paul_n exhort_v we_o thereunto_o 15._o for_o by_o this_o mean_v we_o testify_v that_o union_n and_o conjunction_n which_o we_o have_v one_o with_o a_o other_o as_o member_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o body_n and_o as_o if_o we_o feel_v in_o ourselves_o all_o that_o good_a and_o evil_n which_o other_o feel_v now_o because_o in_o our_o definition_n of_o these_o affection_n of_o they_o look_v for_o we_o must_v consider_v more_o particular_o of_o these_o thing_n and_o see_v first_o why_o god_n have_v put_v these_o affection_n in_o the_o soul_n and_o what_o be_v true_a and_o present_a joy_n as_o also_o what_o that_o other_o kind_n of_o joy_n be_v which_o have_v regard_n to_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v which_o be_v proper_o call_v hope_n now_o let_v we_o hear_v thou_o aser_n upon_o this_o matter_n of_o the_o cause_n why_o god_n have_v place_v these_o affection_n of_o joy_n and_o sorrow_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o true_a and_o false_a joy_n and_o of_o good_a and_o bad_a hope_n chap._n 45._o aser._n man_n have_v common_o sharp_a wit_n to_o know_v vain_a earthly_a and_o carnal_a thing_n but_o as_o for_o heavenly_a true_a &_o eternal_a thing_n they_o be_v able_a for_o the_o most_o part_n to_o understand_v nothing_o so_o that_o we_o may_v compare_v the_o eye_n of_o their_o soul_n to_o the_o eye_n of_o a_o owl_n comparison_n which_o see_v clear_o by_o night_n but_o when_o the_o sun_n be_v rise_v see_v never_o a_o whit_n even_o so_o man_n have_v some_o knowledge_n of_o the_o troublesome_a thing_n of_o this_o world_n but_o his_o sight_n can_v pierce_v unto_o the_o celestial_a and_o divine_a light_n therefore_o it_o fall_v out_o often_o that_o be_v beguile_v by_o his_o own_o sense_n and_o reason_n instead_o of_o good_a and_o joy_n he_o choose_v and_o follow_v after_o that_o which_o be_v evil_a and_o full_a of_o grief_n for_o when_o the_o affection_n of_o the_o heart_n which_o natural_o desire_v good_a and_o seek_v after_o joy_n be_v miss_v and_o deceive_v by_o humane_a reason_n it_o easy_o embrace_v evil_a in_o place_n of_o good_a and_o that_o under_o some_o vain_a show_n of_o good_a which_o seem_v to_o be_v in_o that_o evil_a thing_n it_o choose_v and_o although_o at_o the_o first_o the_o heart_n feel_v not_o that_o which_o happen_v unto_o it_o yet_o have_v it_o leisure_n enough_o after_o to_o complain_v of_o the_o torment_n which_o be_v always_o equal_a both_o for_o age_n and_o time_n to_o the_o fault_n commit_v and_o to_o the_o abuse_n of_o those_o gift_n and_o grace_n which_o god_n have_v place_v in_o the_o nature_n of_o the_o soul_n forasmuch_o then_o as_o the_o heart_n be_v the_o begin_n of_o life_n we_o may_v well_o know_v that_o god_n have_v not_o without_o good_a cause_n place_v therein_o such_o vehement_a affection_n of_o joy_n &_o grief_n which_o serve_v either_o to_o preserve_v or_o to_o destroy_v it_o and_o have_v for_o their_o companion_n hope_v and_o fear_n as_o we_o will_v declare_v hereafter_o for_o by_o these_o affection_n god_n will_v give_v we_o prick_v and_o solicitour_n to_o cause_v we_o to_o think_v serious_o of_o that_o lesson_n which_o david_n give_v we_o when_o he_o say_v taste_v you_o and_o see_v how_o gracious_a the_o lord_n be_v 10._o bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o trust_v in_o he_o fear_v the_o lord_n you_o his_o saint_n for_o nothing_o want_v to_o they_o that_o fear_v he_o the_o lion_n do_v lack_n and_o suffer_v hunger_n but_o they_o which_o seek_v the_o lord_n shall_v want_v nothing_o that_o be_v good_a what_o man_n be_v he_o that_o desire_v life_n and_o love_v long_a day_n for_o to_o see_v good_a keep_v thy_o tongue_n from_o evil_n and_o thy_o lip_n that_o they_o speak_v no_o guile_n eschew_v evil_a and_o do_v good_a seek_v peace_n and_o follow_v after_o it_o the_o it_o any_o seed_n of_o virtue_n it_o as_o well_o as_o the_o rest_n it_o be_v certain_a that_o it_o be_v give_v of_o god_n to_o man_n to_o stir_v he_o up_o to_o the_o desire_n of_o excellent_a thing_n to_o the_o end_n that_o when_o he_o see_v himself_o despise_v and_o reject_v for_o base_a action_n and_o abject_a thing_n and_o be_v grieve_v for_o the_o same_o he_o shall_v endeavour_n to_o leave_v and_o forsake_v they_o and_o to_o addict_v himself_o to_o better_a and_o more_o noble_a thing_n which_o can_v not_o be_v contemn_v nor_o he_o despise_v in_o regard_n of_o they_o and_o this_o kind_n of_o anger_n be_v very_o good_a for_o be_v angry_a in_o this_o sort_n our_o anger_n be_v turn_v upon_o ourselves_o only_o to_o blame_v and_o reprehend_v ourselves_o for_o our_o sloth_n and_o but_o hardness_n inhumanity_n cruelty_n and_o all_o kind_n of_o barbarousness_n which_o be_v to_o be_v account_v and_o take_v for_o monster_n in_o man_n nature_n for_o how_o strange_a and_o monstrous_a a_o thing_n be_v it_o to_o unclothe_v a_o man_n heart_n of_o love_n and_o to_o put_v upon_o it_o hatred_n envy_n extreme_a backebiting_n bitterness_n and_o cruelty_n which_o proceed_v many_o that_o take_v hatred_n to_o be_v a_o inveterate_a anger_n be_v because_o it_o be_v a_o habit_n of_o anger_n whereby_o the_o heart_n eschew_v something_o as_o evil_a and_o desire_v to_o repel_v and_o drive_v it_o away_o wherefore_o this_o affection_n be_v direct_o contrary_a to_o love_v &_o so_o likewise_o be_v anger_n for_o it_o be_v a_o offence_n root_v in_o the_o hart_n which_o cause_v it_o to_o wish_v great_o his_o hurt_n by_o who_o it_o take_v itself_o to_o be_v offend_v now_o because_o contempt_n do_v often_o accompany_v hatred_n and_o envy_n be_v never_o without_o it_o beside_o that_o it_o breed_v strife_n contention_n manslaughter_n and_o murder_n therefore_o in_o the_o holy_a scripture_n hatred_n be_v often_o take_v for_o all_o these_o thing_n it_o as_o for_o the_o some_o likewise_o be_v give_v thereunto_o of_o custom_n which_o they_o have_v get_v by_o rejoice_v at_o other_o man_n harm_n but_o the_o cause_n why_o it_o be_v easy_a for_o we_o to_o hate_v then_o to_o love_n love_n and_o why_o hatred_n take_v deep_a root_n in_o our_o heart_n then_o love_n be_v because_o hatred_n find_v a_o better_a soil_n there_o and_o a_o more_o apt_a foundation_n to_o be_v lay_v upon_o than_o love_n do_v and_o that_o chief_o for_o two_o reason_n the_o first_o be_v the_o corruption_n of_o man_n nature_n which_o be_v leave_v unto_o itself_o favour_v more_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o satan_n who_o be_v hateful_a a_o liar_n and_o envious_a from_o the_o beginning_n then_o of_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n who_o be_v love_n truth_n and_o charity_n therefore_o saint_n john_n say_v 12._o that_o cain_n hate_v his_o brother_n and_o slay_v he_o because_o he_o be_v of_o the_o devil_n and_o abel_n be_v of_o god_n this_o hatred_n will_v be_v always_o in_o those_o that_o in_o the_o society_n of_o man_n to_o the_o end_n there_o shall_v be_v a_o right_n and_o indifferent_a distribution_n of_o all_o good_a thing_n so_o that_o none_o of_o they_o shall_v light_v upon_o the_o unwoorthy_a that_o use_v they_o ill_o but_o to_o such_o as_o deserve_v they_o and_o know_v how_o to_o use_v they_o aright_o now_o when_o these_o affection_n be_v thus_o rule_v they_o be_v very_o good_a and_o profitable_a zeal_n but_o common_o they_o be_v abuse_v unto_o vice_n for_o indignation_n be_v quick_o breed_v of_o envy_n which_o be_v unjust_a be_v also_o of_o a_o corrupt_a and_o bad_a
