you_o will_v reason_n for_o believe_v and_o comfort_v so_o also_o you_o must_v reason_n against_o excessive_a cast_v down_o for_o sin_n for_o to_o do_v this_o you_o have_v no_o reason_n you_o must_v show_v reason_n of_o your_o dejection_n as_o well_o as_o of_o your_o assurance_n and_o persuasion_n wicked_a man_n come_v and_o ask_v they_o concern_v heaven_n they_o will_v tell_v you_o that_o they_o be_v sure_a of_o heaven_n and_o then_o ask_v their_o reason_n wherefore_o they_o think_v so_o they_o can_v give_v you_o no_o reason_n at_o all_o therefore_o that_o be_v presumption_n so_o good_a man_n be_v apt_a under_o too_o much_o dejection_n of_o spirit_n to_o say_v that_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o hell_n and_o be_v cast_v off_o from_o heaven_n but_o ask_v they_o a_o good_a reason_n they_o can_v give_v none_o at_o all_o and_o this_o be_v a_o sin_n on_o the_o other_o side_n i_o will_v ask_v such_o doubt_a christian_n upon_o serious_a thought_n because_o you_o be_v apt_a to_o think_v you_o shall_v go_v to_o hell_n can_v you_o say_v that_o you_o have_v no_o more_o reason_n in_o you_o then_o wicked_a reprobate_n have_v and_o can_v you_o say_v that_o you_o be_v guilty_a of_o those_o actual_a sin_n that_o be_v impossible_a to_o stand_v with_o a_o principle_n of_o true_a grace_n and_o that_o there_o be_v that_o in_o you_o reign_v that_o no_o child_n of_o god_n can_v have_v these_o be_v indeed_o some_o reason_n but_o if_o these_o be_v not_o find_v you_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o be_v cast_v down_o though_o you_o must_v check_v your_o own_o heart_n for_o too_o much_o cast_v down_o for_o sin_n yet_o you_o must_v not_o cast_v off_o all_o dejection_n for_o sin_n for_o to_o be_v cast_v down_o for_o sin_n be_v a_o duty_n but_o to_o be_v overmuch_o and_o excessive_o cast_v down_o for_o sin_n that_o be_v a_o sin_n there_o be_v such_o duty_n that_o you_o be_v to_o put_v your_o heart_n upon_o but_o not_o to_o deject_v your_o heart_n excessive_o under_o and_o if_o you_o ask_v i_o how_o i_o shall_v know_v that_o these_o be_v duty_n i_o answer_v in_o these_o four_o particular_n first_o you_o be_v not_o to_o check_v your_o heart_n for_o dejection_n under_o sin_n when_o the_o god_n love_n and_o free_a grace_n and_o pardon_v mercy_n with_o a_o other_o but_o those_o that_o do_v so_o poor_a upon_o their_o corruption_n and_o sinful_a miscarriage_n as_o never_o to_o be_v able_a to_o see_v god_n love_n and_o free_a grace_n and_o pardon_v mercy_n in_o the_o promise_n of_o the_o gospel_n this_o be_v a_o sin_n and_o this_o you_o shall_v check_v your_o heart_n for_o three_o thy_o dejection_n be_v not_o excessive_a when_o thy_o dejection_n be_v more_o for_o the_o evil_a of_o fact_n then_o for_o the_o danger_n of_o punishment_n when_o your_o dejection_n be_v more_o for_o sin_n commit_v then_o thy_o state_n thou_o have_v endanger_v that_o be_v not_o excessive_a but_o when_o thy_o dejection_n be_v more_o in_o mourning_n for_o the_o state_n you_o have_v endanger_v then_o the_o sin_n you_o have_v commit_v that_o be_v excessive_a when_o a_o man_n shall_v commit_v a_o sin_n and_o he_o shall_v be_v deject_v and_o say_v i_o shall_v go_v to_o hell_n and_o lose_v my_o happy_a estate_n in_o heaven_n and_o fear_v hell_n as_o punishment_n more_o than_o to_o mourn_v for_o sin_n as_o a_o sin_n this_o be_v excessive_a sorrow_n for_o sin_n when_o thou_o shall_v mourn_v more_o for_o the_o fear_n of_o punishment_n of_o sin_n then_o for_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v a_o dishonour_n to_o god_n and_o that_o thou_o have_v commit_v and_o aggravate_v evil_a it_o be_v excessive_a but_o when_o thy_o sorrow_n shall_v be_v more_o for_o sin_n and_o god_n dishonour_v then_o for_o fear_n of_o punishment_n if_o this_o be_v the_o trouble_n of_o thy_o soul_n thou_o be_v not_o to_o check_v thy_o heart_n for_o it_o four_o those_o dejection_n and_o casting_n down_o for_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v entertain_v when_o they_o have_v this_o effect_n for_o to_o make_v thou_o to_o justify_v god_n thy_o soul_n while_o thou_o live_v yet_o thy_o soul_n may_v come_v to_o heaven_n when_o thou_o die_v 9_o consider_v and_o be_v not_o so_o cast_v down_o for_o want_n of_o comfort_n for_o when_o you_o come_v to_o heaven_n you_o shall_v have_v comfort_n enough_o god_n do_v reserve_v the_o fullness_n of_o thy_o comfort_n until_o the_o fullness_n of_o thy_o glory_n this_o be_v the_o time_n of_o thy_o travel_v in_o this_o world_n and_o you_o must_v not_o expect_v your_o reward_n till_o you_o come_v to_o your_o journey_n end_n here_o you_o have_v joy_n and_o comfort_n for_o a_o time_n but_o there_o in_o heaven_n you_o shall_v have_v joy_n and_o comfort_n for_o evermore_o here_o in_o this_o world_n joy_n and_o comfort_n enter_v into_o you_o but_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v you_o shall_v enter_v into_o joy_n and_o that_o be_v trascendent_o and_o infinite_o more_o than_o to_o have_v joy_n to_o enter_v into_o you_o here_o in_o this_o world_n you_o have_v but_o the_o beginning_n of_o comfort_n but_o there_o you_o shall_v have_v endure_v last_a comfort_n here_o you_o have_v comfort_n by_o drop_n but_o there_o you_o shall_v come_v to_o enjoy_v and_o see_v a_o ocean_n of_o comfort_n and_o that_o for_o ever_o object_n there_o be_v one_o objection_n to_o be_v answer_v which_o be_v this_o and_o it_o be_v a_o practical_a case_n of_o conscience_n i_o think_v i_o hear_v some_o poor_a of_o the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n be_v mere_o a_o act_n of_o his_o sovereignty_n and_o power_n and_o to_o try_v my_o love_n to_o try_v the_o confidence_n of_o my_o heart_n in_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o the_o strength_n of_o my_o love_n to_o he_o and_o the_o more_o to_o put_v i_o forward_o to_o look_v after_o jesus_n christ_n if_o this_o be_v so_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v much_o trouble_v but_o alas_o what_o shall_v i_o do_v my_o conscience_n tell_v i_o that_o it_o be_v for_o sin_n that_o god_n do_v withdraw_v the_o light_n of_o his_o countenance_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o his_o spirit_n and_o for_o this_o cause_n he_o deal_v with_o i_o and_o my_o conscience_n tell_v i_o that_o i_o have_v grieve_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n and_o send_v that_o sad_a to_o heaven_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v just_a with_o god_n to_o let_v i_o live_v sad_o upon_o earth_n and_o to_o live_v in_o a_o comfortless_a condition_n and_o i_o have_v commit_v great_a sin_n to_o take_v away_o my_o comfort_n and_o for_o the_o guilt_n of_o sin_n it_o be_v for_o which_o god_n do_v hide_v his_o face_n and_o this_o be_v the_o sad_a objection_n and_o reason_v of_o many_o a_o poor_a soul_n now_o there_o be_v four_o particular_n why_o a_o child_n of_o god_n shall_v not_o be_v thus_o deject_v although_o he_o may_v be_v cast_v down_o under_o sin_n 1._o if_o thou_o can_v not_o retain_v the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n yet_o if_o you_o retain_v the_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o sin_n for_o which_o thou_o have_v lose_v the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n to_o be_v much_o in_o the_o latter_a though_o thou_o have_v little_a of_o the_o former_a to_o grow_v down_o ward_n in_o humiliation_n thou_o do_v grow_v but_o little_a upward_a in_o consolation_n it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n hosea_n 14._o 5._o i_o will_v be_v as_o a_o dew_n unto_o israel_n he_o shall_v grow_v as_o a_o lily_n or_o blossom_n or_o flourish_n and_o cast_v forth_o or_o strike_v forth_o his_o root_n as_o lebanon_n of_o my_o own_o sinfulness_n the_o lord_n have_v rather_o to_o see_v his_o people_n to_o be_v in_o mourn_a weed_n then_o to_o be_v in_o garment_n of_o pleasantness_n if_o god_n do_v not_o see_v thy_o face_n full_a of_o smile_n yet_o if_o he_o see_v thy_o eye_n full_a of_o tear_n that_o be_v more_o acceptable_a to_o he_o though_o you_o may_v want_v the_o light_n of_o god_n countenance_n yet_o if_o you_o have_v the_o sense_n of_o your_o own_o sinfulness_n that_o do_v eclipse_v the_o light_n of_o god_n favour_n to_o thy_o soul_n thou_o have_v no_o cause_n to_o be_v too_o much_o cast_v down_o that_o jesus_n christ_n do_v love_v you_o yet_o though_o thou_o do_v not_o know_v thou_o be_v belove_v yet_o to_o love_n christ_n in_o this_o time_n thou_o need_v not_o to_o trouble_v thyself_o and_o though_o thou_o have_v not_o see_v jesus_n christ_n yet_o to_o believe_v in_o he_o and_o by_o faith_n to_o apply_v jesus_n christ_n to_o thy_o soul_n if_o this_o have_v be_v thy_o work_n and_o thou_o can_v say_v so_o you_o may_v be_v confident_a that_o christ_n love_v you_o true_o though_o it_o may_v not_o be_v apparent_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v strong_a because_o that_o we_o can_v never_o love_v jesus_n christ_n until_o he_o first_o love_v we_o a_o man_n be_v in_o trouble_n of_o mind_n want_v the_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n he_o say_v that_o he_o never_o know_v what_o the_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n thou_o want_v the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o thy_o sin_n against_o jesus_n christ_n many_o man_n be_v in_o this_o case_n there_o be_v many_o man_n that_o will_v say_v that_o they_o do_v not_o know_v whether_o they_o shall_v go_v to_o heaven_n or_o hell_n whether_o they_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n or_o the_o child_n of_o wrath_n whether_o christ_n love_v they_o or_o not_o and_o yet_o no_o sin_n trouble_v they_o and_o no_o guilt_n disquiet_v they_o but_o they_o presume_v of_o grace_n and_o presume_v of_o pardon_n when_o for_o any_o thing_n thou_o know_v there_o be_v but_o a_o step_n between_o thou_o and_o hell_n and_o in_o this_o case_n thy_o condition_n be_v very_o sad_a 2._o you_o that_o say_v that_o you_o want_v the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n and_o yet_o not_o at_o that_o time_n want_v the_o sense_n of_o the_o loss_n and_o absence_n of_o that_o love_n you_o say_v you_o once_o have_v that_o man_n sad_a spectacle_n that_o grieve_v for_o the_o loss_n of_o a_o estate_n but_o not_o for_o the_o loss_n of_o god_n when_o a_o man_n shall_v not_o know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o or_o not_o and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n for_o all_o this_o to_o take_v no_o care_n though_o his_o state_n be_v a_o lose_a state_n to_o lose_v grace_n and_o to_o lose_v heaven_n this_o case_n be_v sad_a to_o be_v in_o such_o danger_n and_o yet_o not_o to_o be_v sensible_a of_o that_o danger_n 3._o your_o case_n be_v sad_a in_o case_n when_o you_o want_v a_o sense_n of_o christ_n love_n to_o your_o soul_n and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n you_o want_v act_n of_o love_n and_o to_o express_v your_o love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n you_o will_v fain_o know_v whether_o jesus_n christ_n love_v you_o or_o not_o yet_o never_o labour_v to_o know_v and_o examine_v whether_o you_o love_v jesus_n christ_n or_o not_o in_o draw_v out_o your_o soul_n in_o a_o way_n of_o love_n to_o he_o but_o instead_o of_o love_a jesus_n christ_n you_o do_v draw_v forth_o regining_n against_o god_n against_o jesus_n christ_n when_o you_o shall_v be_v so_o far_o from_o trust_v in_o he_o as_o you_o shall_v repine_v against_o he_o and_o not_o say_v with_o job_n though_o be_v kill_v i_o yet_o will_v i_o trust_v in_o he_o and_o though_o i_o perish_v yet_o i_o will_v perish_v in_o trust_v in_o he_o if_o under_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n love_n you_o also_o want_v love_n to_o jesus_n christ_n your_o case_n be_v sad_a 4._o at_o that_o time_n when_o you_o want_v the_o comfort_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o at_o that_o time_n you_o want_v the_o quicken_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n thy_o case_n be_v sad_a when_o you_o shall_v not_o only_o want_v comfort_n but_o want_v grace_n too_o this_o make_v thy_o condition_n to_o be_v sad_a to_o be_v disquiet_v for_o want_v of_o comfort_n and_o to_o be_v disquiet_v for_o want_v of_o grace_n o_o look_v into_o your_o own_o heart_n you_o that_o want_v comfort_n do_v you_o want_v grace_n too_o have_v you_o no_o tenderness_n of_o conscience_n no_o remorse_n of_o spirit_n no_o love_n to_o duty_n no_o zeal_n for_o god_n no_o faith_n to_o live_v by_o no_o hope_n in_o christ_n to_o hang_v upon_o no_o love_n to_o christ_n in_o thy_o soul_n no_o repentance_n for_o sin_n in_o this_o case_n thy_o condition_n be_v very_o sad_a 5._o when_o thou_o have_v be_v a_o long_a time_n under_o the_o loss_n of_o comfort_n and_o in_o trouble_n of_o mind_n and_o perplexity_n of_o spirit_n and_o yet_o so_o to_o live_v without_o any_o inquiry_n how_o thou_o may_v get_v out_o of_o this_o sad_a condition_n and_o to_o get_v the_o comfort_n you_o want_v when_o it_o may_v be_v your_o comforting-work_n and_o the_o quickning-work_n be_v go_v too_o to_o want_v comfort_n and_o to_o want_v grace_n and_o yet_o to_o live_v and_o not_o to_o look_v after_o it_o but_o to_o do_v as_o cain_n do_v to_o pursue_v the_o world_n to_o pursue_v the_o profit_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o world_n and_o all_o for_o this_o end_n to_o stifle_v his_o conscience_n for_o to_o take_v no_o pain_n to_o stir_v up_o grace_n in_o thy_o soul_n and_o to_o quicken_v thy_o heart_n that_o thou_o may_v have_v the_o joy_n of_o heaven_n and_o the_o comfort_n of_o grace_n the_o love_n of_o god_n the_o shine_v of_o christ_n face_n the_o manifestation_n of_o his_o love_n and_o assurance_n of_o thy_o salvation_n when_o you_o shall_v not_o look_v end_n of_o humiliation_n thou_o may_v satisfy_v thyself_o though_o thou_o want_v the_o degree_n this_o be_v the_o second_o rule_n rule_n 3_o the_o three_o rule_n why_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n shall_v not_o be_v too_o much_o cast_v down_o for_o sin_n be_v this_o be_v sure_a to_o cast_v thyself_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n for_o life_n and_o salvation_n and_o then_o whatever_o come_v be_v sure_a thou_o will_v not_o be_v too_o much_o cast_v down_o for_o sin_n nor_o too_o much_o deject_v under_o it_o what_o be_v the_o great_a reason_n that_o so_o many_o poor_a soul_n be_v so_o much_o cast_v down_o for_o sin_n too_o much_o deject_v under_o the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o it_o it_o be_v this_o because_o they_o be_v afraid_a to_o cast_v themselves_o whole_o upon_o jesus_n christ_n and_o to_o roll_v themselves_o upon_o he_o for_o salvation_n though_o more_o sin_n require_v more_o tear_n for_o sin_n upon_o the_o thought_n of_o it_o yet_o jesus_n christ_n need_v not_o shed_v more_o blood_n for_o sin_n jesus_n christ_n need_v no_o more_o to_o die_v for_o satisfaction_n for_o sin_n christ_n have_v pay_v a_o full_a and_o complete_a and_o sufficient_a ransom_n for_o sin_n for_o to_o pass_v from_o one_o degree_n to_o another_o till_o they_o perish_v everlasting_o and_o this_o they_o do_v without_o fear_n second_o but_o now_o on_o the_o right_a hand_n good_a man_n be_v very_o apt_a to_o run_v into_o a_o right-hand_a error_n and_o wicked_a man_n will_v not_o be_v cast_v down_o for_o sin_n at_o all_o these_o will_v labour_v to_o cast_v themselves_o too_o low_o for_o sin_n under_o the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o it_o the_o scripture_n make_v mention_n of_o wicked_a man_n they_o be_v not_o at_o all_o trouble_a for_o sin_n as_o you_o may_v read_v in_o job_n 21._o 14_o 15._o nothing_o 15._o trouble_v their_o conscience_n when_o they_o come_v to_o die_v see_v verse_n 13._o they_o spend_v their_o day_n in_o wealth_n or_o as_o the_o hebrew_n word_n be_v they_o spend_v their_o day_n in_o mirth_n and_o in_o a_o moment_n go_v down_o to_o the_o grave_n but_o be_v they_o at_o all_o humble_v before_o god_n read_v the_o 14_o and_o 15_o verse_n therefore_o
