he_o so_o weak_a sometime_o and_o the_o flesh_n so_o mighty_o prevail_v that_o as_o one_o utter_o destitute_a of_o this_o joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o the_o spirit_n as_o though_o the_o spirit_n have_v utter_o give_v he_o up_o he_o pray_v carnest_o to_o have_v the_o same_o restore_v for_o it_o be_v with_o faith_n as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o moon_n which_o sometime_o give_v her_o full_a light_n and_o sometime_o be_v eclipse_v and_o as_o it_o be_v with_o the_o sun_n which_o sometime_o do_v shine_v in_o his_o full_a strength_n and_o sometime_o be_v shadow_v and_o hide_v under_o cloud_n like_o the_o tree_n that_o sometime_o flourish_v be_v fresh_a and_o green_a and_o sometime_o fade_v again_o seem_v dry_a and_o dead_a as_o blast_v or_o like_o the_o child_n within_o the_o womb_n that_o sometime_o move_v strong_o and_o sometime_o again_o rest_v a_o long_a time_n quiet_a and_o void_a of_o sensible_a and_o apparent_a motion_n now_o as_o it_o be_v against_o reason_n to_o faith_n the_o moon_n be_v darken_v and_o eclipse_v and_o the_o sun_n be_v hide_v and_o shadow_v under_o a_o cloud_n therefore_o there_o be_v no_o moon_n no_o sun_n at_o all_o the_o tree_n be_v dry_a and_o naked_a and_o therefore_o be_v decay_v the_o child_n do_v not_o show_v a_o continual_a and_o apparent_a motion_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v dead_a within_o the_o womb_n so_o it_o be_v very_o absurd_a also_o to_o say_v that_o because_o thy_o faith_n be_v eclipse_v and_o darken_v by_o the_o cloud_n of_o our_o imperfection_n bite_v and_o beat_v with_o the_o outrageousness_n of_o the_o flesh_n lie_v still_o and_o quiet_a without_o her_o wont_a motion_n that_o therefore_o it_o be_v cease_v to_o be_v a_o faith_n or_o be_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o and_o therefore_o this_o reason_n can_v be_v no_o reason_n at_o all_o to_o prove_v the_o nullity_n of_o faith_n unless_o it_o first_o be_v prove_v that_o faith_n do_v always_o increase_v and_o never_o decrease_v and_o that_o have_v once_o bring_v forth_o the_o full_a assurance_n aforesaid_a it_o do_v always_o keep_v and_o retain_v the_o same_o inviolable_a the_o second_o mean_n of_o comfort_n in_o this_o case_n be_v to_o know_v persect_o comfort_n mean_v 〈◊〉_d comfort_n and_o to_o retain_v sure_o the_o true_a difference_n of_o true_a faith_n and_o feign_a for_o this_o be_v a_o second_o doubt_n rise_v from_o the_o defect_n of_o the_o aforesaid_a assurance_n whether_o their_o faith_n be_v true_a or_o no_o i_o think_v it_o necessary_a in_o the_o next_o place_n to_o consider_v how_o this_o true_a faith_n may_v be_v descry_v from_o that_o which_o be_v counterfeit_a false_a and_o temporary_a it_o be_v therefore_o to_o be_v understand_v that_o true_a faith_n may_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v by_o these_o mark_n first_o in_o that_o it_o yield_v at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o though_o not_o always_o this_o sure_a persuasion_n that_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v remit_v and_o forgive_v and_o that_o not_o for_o any_o merit_n or_o desert_n of_o we_o but_o by_o and_o through_o the_o merit_n and_o precious_a bloodshedding_n of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n second_o upon_o this_o ensue_v or_o rather_o together_o with_o this_o be_v annex_v a_o boldness_n and_o confidence_n to_o approach_v unto_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n and_o mercy_n rom._n 5._o with_o a_o assurance_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o conscience_n that_o we_o shall_v obtain_v remission_n of_o all_o our_o sin_n and_o be_v free_o justify_v in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n and_o three_o the_o outward_a effect_n of_o faith_n will_v also_o appear_v and_o show_v themselves_o in_o our_o work_n in_o that_o we_o shall_v find_v in_o our_o affection_n a_o loathe_n and_o a_o detestation_n of_o sin_n a_o love_n of_o god_n a_o reverend_a fear_n to_o offend_v he_o be_v to_o we_o so_o gracious_a and_o love_a a_o father_n a_o zeal_n of_o his_o glory_n and_o a_o earnest_a care_n and_o desire_v to_o live_v according_a to_o his_o will_n with_o many_o other_o such_o like_a these_o effect_n if_o our_o faith_n be_v a_o true_a faith_n indeed_o do_v then_o show_v forth_o themselves_o in_o some_o measure_n when_o as_o our_o faith_n be_v at_o that_o full_a tide_n though_o faith_n be_v somewhat_o weaken_v they_o seem_v to_o be_v afterward_o lessen_v and_o rebate_v in_o us._n but_o as_o for_o that_o fame_a faith_n it_o can_v make_v this_o application_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n neither_o can_v it_o come_v with_o such_o full_a assurance_n to_o crave_v and_o obtain_v remission_n at_o god_n hand_n for_o though_o it_o seem_v to_o bring_v forth_o a_o certain_a joy_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o he_o that_o have_v it_o &_o thereupon_o do_v flatter_v himself_o in_o a_o bare_a conceit_n of_o forgiveness_n yet_o because_o he_o do_v not_o thorough_o enter_v into_o examination_n of_o himself_o it_o be_v but_o like_o a_o dream_n and_o he_o which_o have_v this_o faith_n be_v but_o as_o one_o that_o be_v asleep_a who_o dream_v persuade_v himself_o that_o he_o be_v increase_v be_v true_a indeed_o but_o yet_o too_o weak_a and_o altogether_o unable_a to_o conclude_v the_o question_n for_o thus_o he_o reason_v these_o misery_n and_o affliction_n be_v sometime_o the_o effect_n of_o god_n hatred_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v so_o in_o thou_o too_o answ_n this_o argument_n can_v hold_v for_o that_o which_o be_v sometime_o so_o will_v neither_o bear_v a_o general_a inference_n nor_o yet_o a_o particular_a or_o a_o special_a conclusion_n if_o a_o man_n shall_v thus_o reason_v the_o sun_n do_v sometime_o harden_v the_o thing_n it_o shine_v upon_o therefore_o it_o harden_v wax_n also_o every_o petit_fw-fr logician_n will_v be_v ready_a to_o scoff_n and_o lest_o at_o the_o baldness_n of_o his_o argument_n but_o to_o insist_v even_o in_o satan_n own_o example_n these_o trouble_n and_o misery_n proceed_v sometime_o from_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o do_v so_o to_o the_o very_a reprobate_n and_o castawaye_n although_o the_o antecedent_n be_v true_a yet_o the_o conclusion_n can_v never_o be_v make_v good_a and_o such_o be_v the_o conclusion_n of_o satan_n for_o what_o reason_n i_o pray_v you_o be_v in_o this_o it_o be_v sometime_o so_o and_o therefore_o so_o at_o all_o time_n it_o be_v so_o in_o some_o and_o therefore_o so_o in_o all_o or_o it_o be_v so_o in_o judas_n the_o traitor_n ergo_fw-la it_o be_v so_o in_o peter_n or_o some_o one_o other_o of_o the_o apostle_n as_o though_o that_o which_o be_v affirm_v true_o of_o the_o one_o must_v of_o necessity_n without_o exception_n be_v verify_v of_o another_o let_v satan_n therefore_o first_o prove_v this_o his_o proposition_n to_o be_v general_o true_a that_o be_v that_o these_o affliction_n do_v always_o come_v from_o the_o hatred_n of_o god_n or_o else_o this_o and_o such_o like_a particular_a conclusion_n will_v stand_v he_o in_o no_o stead_n but_o this_o proof_n he_o can_v never_o be_v able_a to_o make_v hold_v he_o therefore_o at_o this_o pinch_n and_o thou_o shall_v to_o thy_o great_a comfort_n have_v a_o notable_a victory_n against_o he_o thus_o thou_o may_v now_o see_v one_o piece_n of_o satan_n malicious_a craftiness_n discover_v which_o he_o use_v in_o this_o reason_n to_o deceive_v man_n afflict_v withal_o but_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o all_o the_o poison_n that_o lurk_v under_o the_o fair_a show_n of_o word_n in_o this_o the_o serpent_n reason_n as_o shall_v anon_o appear_v he_o be_v indeed_o very_o pregnant_a in_o his_o proof_n so_o be_v he_o also_o as_o painful_a and_o plentiful_a in_o his_o misconstruction_n wrest_v all_o to_o his_o own_o purpose_n that_o have_v but_o only_o a_o very_a little_a show_n or_o likelihood_n to_o favour_v the_o cause_n he_o have_v in_o hand_n and_o strive_v to_o prove_v whereupon_o it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o as_o in_o many_o other_o so_o even_o in_o this_o reason_n also_o he_o very_o slight_o pass_v over_o the_o matter_n by_o the_o crafty_a confusion_n of_o word_n of_o diverse_a signification_n as_o though_o they_o signify_v and_o import_v one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o thing_n and_o therefore_o the_o rather_o and_o soon_o to_o deceive_v either_o thou_o or_o any_o other_o he_o thus_o subtle_o reason_v reason_n satan_n his_o reason_n god_n say_v the_o scripture_n be_v angry_a with_o those_o who_o he_o punish_v and_o therefore_o it_o can_v be_v but_o thou_o be_v hate_v of_o he_o and_o so_o out_o of_o the_o tale_n and_o number_n of_o his_o child_n answ_n this_o be_v no_o doubt_n a_o very_a absurd_a kind_n of_o reason_v and_o argue_v sufficient_o from_o what_o spirit_n it_o proceed_v and_o therefore_o be_v thereafter_o to_o be_v like_v of_o and_o allow_v what_o scripture_n ever_o teach_v thus_o to_o join_v &_o confound_v those_o thing_n together_o which_o god_n have_v distinguish_v can_v the_o wind_n stir_v and_o move_v but_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o tempest_n can_v the_o sun_n be_v dim_v with_o a_o cloud_n but_o it_o must_v utter_o lose_v his_o light_n and_o can_v god_n he_o angry_a and_o displease_v but_o he_o must_v needs_o hate_v and_o final_o cast_v away_o for_o ever_o be_v there_o no_o mean_a to_o be_v have_v none_o easy_o way_n to_o be_v find_v must_v all_o of_o mere_a necessity_n and_o of_o force_n be_v stretch_v on_o the_o rack_n of_o extremity_n indeed_o satan_n will_v have_v it_o so_o and_o thereunto_o go_v about_o by_o this_o his_o subtle_a reason_n to_o persuade_v but_o yet_o god_n spirit_n do_v teach_v we_o far_o otherwise_o that_o god_n show_v himself_o to_o be_v angry_a and_o displease_v with_o many_o of_o his_o servant_n and_o dear_a child_n who_o notwithstanding_o he_o hate_v not_o but_o most_o dear_o love_v that_o he_o oftentimes_o have_v not_o only_o threaten_v but_o also_o actual_o execute_v punishment_n upon_o they_o from_o who_o he_o also_o promise_v that_o he_o will_v not_o take_v away_o his_o mercy_n for_o ever_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n hezechiah_n and_o many_o other_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v prove_v to_o be_v as_o certain_a as_o that_o which_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o therefore_o even_o in_o this_o point_n as_o in_o all_o his_o other_o satan_n be_v find_v to_o be_v a_o liar_n &_o his_o reason_n to_o be_v of_o no_o force_n for_o that_o so_o subtle_o he_o make_v no_o distinction_n and_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o hatred_n and_o anger_n of_o god_n as_o though_o they_o be_v indifferent_a time_n of_o one_o nature_n and_o of_o one_o signification_n and_o therefore_o if_o in_o any_o place_n he_o find_v these_o affliction_n to_o proceed_v of_o anger_n he_o straightway_o infer_v that_o it_o be_v of_o hatred_n as_o though_o god_n hate_v all_o those_o with_o who_o and_o that_o most_o just_o he_o be_v promise_v and_o he_o have_v thus_o covenant_v indeed_o but_o yet_o his_o promise_n and_o covenant_n be_v not_o so_o make_v as_o that_o affliction_n shall_v not_o touch_v the_o servant_n of_o god_n at_o all_o but_o rather_o in_o this_o sense_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o hurt_v or_o overcome_v they_o for_o he_o will_v acquit_v and_o free_v his_o faithful_a servant_n from_o that_o tyrannous_a that_o these_o affliction_n do_v befall_v the_o child_n of_o god_n and_o second_o that_o it_o be_v of_o necessity_n that_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o for_o proof_n of_o the_o first_o i_o may_v produce_v the_o example_n of_o a_o great_a number_n of_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n as_o noah_n lot_n moses_n job_n david_n daniel_n the_o prophet_n apostle_n and_o the_o faithful_a martyr_n and_o witness_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n but_o forsomuch_o as_o the_o same_o have_v be_v touch_v before_o i_o will_v not_o stay_v hereupon_o the_o second_o have_v a_o necessity_n join_v thereunto_o that_o of_o necessity_n it_o must_v be_v so_o do_v require_v a_o more_o large_a discourse_n &_o further_a proof_n which_o by_o god_n assistance_n shall_v be_v do_v and_o that_o i_o hope_v in_o such_o manner_n as_o that_o the_o truth_n shall_v easy_o appear_v to_o stand_v full_o and_o altogether_o against_o satan_n and_o his_o wicked_a policy_n in_o this_o pain_n take_v i_o may_v urge_v that_o excellent_a say_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n 3.12_o 2._o tim._n 3.12_o that_o whosoever_o will_v live_v godly_a in_o christ_n jesus_n must_v suffer_v persecution_n but_o i_o know_v that_o the_o adversary_n will_v be_v very_o carne_a to_o cavil_n against_o i_o and_o take_v exception_n against_o this_o doctrine_n and_o place_n of_o paul_n say_v that_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v understand_v of_o any_o punishment_n for_o sin_n as_o those_o affliction_n which_o be_v lay_v upon_o he_o but_o for_o well-doing_n but_o i_o insist_v with_o this_o interrogation_n be_v it_o not_o more_o unlikely_a that_o the_o servant_n of_o christ_n shall_v suffer_v for_o well-doing_n then_o for_o evil_a and_o if_o god_n suffer_v they_o to_o be_v evil_o entreat_v and_o persecute_v of_o the_o world_n and_o that_o even_o then_o when_o they_o do_v well_o how_o much_o more_o shall_v he_o do_v it_o when_o they_o shall_v sin_v and_o offend_v against_o he_o hereunto_o thou_o will_v haply_o answer_v that_o this_o oppress_v and_o cruel_o persecute_v the_o poor_a member_n and_o faithful_a servant_n of_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n which_o die_v strange_a and_o unwonted_a death_n and_o suffer_v in_o their_o end_n most_o terrible_a and_o unspeakle_n torment_v yet_o since_o the_o time_n and_o manner_n of_o god_n call_v be_v so_o secret_a and_o unknown_a unto_o we_o shall_v i_o say_v that_o therefore_o hence_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n and_o in_o the_o number_n of_o his_o faithful_a servant_n chap._n xxiii_o of_o the_o five_o position_n these_o thing_n be_v thus_o conclude_v as_o we_o have_v answer_v satan_n objection_n and_o in_o answer_v remove_v his_o discomfort_n whereinto_o he_o seek_v to_o cast_v the_o child_n of_o god_n so_o now_o let_v we_o gather_v as_o it_o be_v into_o a_o brief_a sum_n the_o comfort_n before_o entreat_v of_o and_o also_o further_o see_v what_o comfort_v more_o we_o can_v make_v against_o this_o temptation_n and_o what_o spiritual_a diet_n be_v herein_o fit_a and_o consideration_n of_o the_o motive_n cause_n in_o god_n of_o these_o affliction_n and_o that_o be_v love_n and_o mercy_n which_o he_o bear_v unto_o these_o his_o servant_n who_o he_o do_v vouchsafe_v thus_o to_o afflict_v and_o chasten_v for_o this_o serve_v if_o it_o be_v well_o consider_v as_o a_o rein_n to_o hold_v back_o and_o restrain_v the_o violence_n of_o despair_a thought_n when_o as_o fear_n and_o terror_n into_o any_o he_o be_v call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n the_o truth_n hereof_o be_v prove_v by_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n paul_n affirm_v that_o there_o be_v dinner_n sity_n of_o gift_n etc._n 1._o cor._n 12.8_o etc._n etc._n but_o the_o same_o spirit_n for_o to_o one_o be_v give_v by_o the_o spirit_n the_o word_n of_o wisdom_n and_o to_o another_o the_o word_n of_o knowledge_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o be_v give_v faith_n by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o gift_n of_o heal_a by_o the_o same_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o the_o operation_n of_o great_a work_n and_o to_o another_o prophecy_n and_o to_o another_o the_o discern_a of_o spirit_n and_o to_o another_o diversity_n of_o tongue_n and_o to_o another_o the_o interpretation_n of_o tongue_n and_o all_o these_o thing_n work_v even_o the_o self_n same_o spirit_n distribute_v to_o every_o man_n several_o as_o he_o will_n so_o that_o in_o nature_n and_o essence_n it_o be_v the_o same_o spirit_n that_o work_v in_o the_o distribution_n of_o all_o these_o gift_n both_o to_o the_o elect_a and_o also_o reprobate_n although_o the_o person_n in_o who_o he_o work_v be_v as_o i_o have_v say_v find_v to_o be_v diverse_a see_v then_o that_o the_o case_n stand_v so_o that_o even_o the_o reprobate_n be_v partaker_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o that_o the_o gift_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n in_o some_o part_n be_v give_v and_o impart_v unto_o they_o i_o think_v it_o very_o expedient_a for_o the_o remove_n of_o all_o doubt_n which_o may_v arise_v concern_v this_o my_o assertion_n first_o to_o show_v in_o what_o manner_n this_o spirit_n be_v and_o do_v thus_o diverse_o work_v in_o the_o one_o and_o in_o the_o other_o in_o the_o elect_a and_o in_o the_o reprobate_n and_o seeond_o what_o be_v the_o true_a mark_n and_o token_n whereby_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n may_v be_v discern_v as_o touch_v the_o first_o it_o be_v be_v consider_v that_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o essence_n very_a god_n and_o therefore_o infinite_a and_o incomprehensible_a can_v be_v say_v to_o be_v contain_v in_o any_o thing_n but_o fill_v heaven_n &_o earth_n and_o therefore_o when_o it_o be_v say_v that_o he_o be_v in_o any_o it_o be_v to_o be_v understand_v that_o he_o be_v in_o they_o by_o his_o work_n and_o operation_n and_o this_o manner_n of_o his_o be_v in_o they_o be_v after_o two_o sort_n either_o natural_a or_o else_o supernatural_a natural_a i_o call_v that_o which_o exceed_v not_o the_o course_n and_o reach_v of_o man_n nature_n and_o this_o be_v such_o as_o touch_v and_o concerncth_v the_o be_v only_o and_o in_o this_o sense_n the_o spirit_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v in_o the_o very_a senseless_a creature_n and_o to_o have_v his_o work_n and_o operation_n in_o they_o for_o by_o this_o spirit_n of_o god_n it_o be_v that_o every_o thing_n be_v and_o have_v his_o be_v and_o by_o the_o same_o spirit_n it_o be_v preserve_v and_o maintain_v or_o else_o it_o be_v such_o as_o concern_v thing_n sensible_a and_o endue_v with_o life_n sense_n and_o motion_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v impart_v unto_o the_o very_a dumb_a
of_o god_n in_o our_o heart_n and_o soul_n that_o be_v mar_v and_o deface_v so_o great_o by_o the_o fali_a of_o adam_n this_o image_n or_o impression_n be_v easy_o know_v and_o discern_v from_o the_o counterfeit_n and_o outward_a show_n of_o hypocrite_n who_o sanctity_n and_o devotion_n be_v only_o outward_a glorious_a indeed_o they_o appear_v in_o the_o outward_a show_n like_o paint_a sepulcher_n but_o if_o they_o look_v inward_o unto_o the_o heart_n there_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v find_v but_o rottenness_n and_o corruption_n so_o that_o it_o may_v easy_o be_v there_o see_v that_o the_o ruin_n of_o old_a adam_n be_v not_o yet_o again_o repair_v in_o they_o look_v therefore_o i_o will_v advise_v thou_o not_o unto_o the_o outward_a appearance_n be_v it_o never_o so_o glorious_a and_o goodly_a but_o look_v into_o thy_o soul_n the_o inward_a part_n and_o look_v so_o near_o as_o thou_o can_v into_o every_o corner_n thereof_o and_o see_v if_o thou_o can_v find_v the_o rubbish_n of_o adam_n fall_n to_o be_v in_o some_o sort_n sweep_v and_o cast_v out_o and_o the_o image_n of_o god_n in_o holiness_n and_o righteousness_n to_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n renew_v and_o imprint_v again_o upon_o thou_o which_o if_o thou_o can_v see_v and_o perceive_v then_o assure_v thyself_o that_o this_o testimony_n be_v in_o deed_n the_o undoubted_a and_o infallible_a wunesse_fw-fr and_o testimony_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n three_o thou_o may_v know_v and_o discern_v it_o by_o the_o constancy_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o testimony_n that_o it_o give_v for_o it_o be_v not_o like_o the_o waver_a &_o unsteadfast_a flash_n of_o hypocrite_n which_o think_v marvelous_a well_o of_o themselves_o slatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o for_o a_o time_n in_o a_o blind_a conceit_n that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_n but_o can_v grow_v indeed_o to_o any_o continual_a or_o certain_a resolution_n therein_o but_o this_o spirit_n if_o it_o have_v liberty_n to_o speak_v and_o be_v attentive_o hearken_v unto_o yield_v forth_o a_o full_a and_o a_o settle_a persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o election_n in_o christ_n i_o say_v if_o it_o have_v liberty_n to_o speak_v and_o be_v attentive_o hear_v for_o that_o it_o oftentimes_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o faithful_a that_o though_o they_o have_v this_o certain_a witness_n within_o they_o yet_o the_o flesh_n sometime_o get_v the_o head_n and_o mastery_n over_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o will_v not_o suffer_v it_o to_o speak_v so_o plain_o as_o it_o will_v and_o they_o also_o be_v thereupon_o trouble_v with_o this_o frailty_n which_o they_o find_v in_o themselves_o do_v often_o fall_v into_o many_o waver_a and_o doubt_v thought_n while_o they_o do_v not_o listen_v attentive_o unto_o this_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o now_o seem_v to_o speak_v more_o cold_o and_o with_o a_o low_a and_o less_o audible_a voice_n unto_o their_o soul_n than_o heretofore_o for_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o though_o the_o spirit_n do_v always_o witness_n and_o give_v also_o a_o most_o certain_a and_o constant_a witness_n for_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o always_o in_o the_o like_a measure_n to_o the_o discern_a of_o our_o soul_n but_o sometime_o more_o evident_o and_o sometime_o less_o yea_o and_o that_o sometime_o also_o so_o obscure_o as_o that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n while_o they_o be_v too_o much_o busy_v otherways_o in_o harken_v unto_o the_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n they_o do_v seem_v as_o though_o they_o hear_v it_o not_o at_o all_o wherefore_o if_o thou_o have_v once_o feel_v and_o find_v this_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o thou_o let_v it_o suffice_v thou_o and_o be_v therewith_o content_a his_o testimony_n once_o give_v be_v of_o great_a force_n for_o that_o as_o i_o have_v say_v he_o can_v lie_v therefore_o i_o say_v if_o at_o any_o time_n it_o have_v witness_v the_o same_o unto_o thou_o seal_v it_o up_o for_o a_o most_o certain_a truth_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o lead_v we_o to_o all_o truth_n speak_v nothing_o but_o truth_n have_v speak_v it_o and_o although_o now_o it_o seem_v to_o wax_v so_o cold_a in_o give_v evidence_n yet_o if_o it_o do_v but_o whisper_v nay_o if_o it_o do_v as_o you_o will_v say_v but_o breathe_v within_o thou_o that_o be_v give_v never_o so_o secret_a and_o small_a a_o testimony_n yet_o do_v not_o thou_o misdoubt_v it_o for_o even_o this_o be_v as_o sure_a as_o a_o thousand_o other_o clamorous_a and_o loud_a witness_n to_o confirm_v the_o truth_n of_o thy_o election_n and_o be_v further_o assure_v of_o this_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o in_o any_o wise_a reject_v this_o testimony_n though_o it_o seem_v in_o thy_o eye_n but_o simple_a and_o slender_a without_o exceed_a injury_n offer_v unto_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n four_o in_o the_o manner_n also_o of_o the_o effect_v this_o certain_a witness_n and_o testimony_n thou_o may_v discern_v it_o to_o be_v the_o testimony_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o regeneration_n and_o adoption_n for_o it_o be_v whole_o and_o full_o in_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n even_o by_o by_o assure_v thy_o soul_n and_o conscience_n that_o christ_n with_o all_o his_o benefit_n be_v thou_o and_o that_o in_o and_o through_o he_o and_o he_o alone_o thou_o be_v become_v the_o adopt_a child_n of_o god_n and_o heir_n of_o everlasting_a glory_n now_o whereas_o by_o thy_o question_n move_v thou_o seem_v to_o doubt_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o testimony_n whether_o it_o be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o not_o i_o answer_v further_o be_v it_o any_o thing_n likely_a that_o satan_n will_v ever_o persuade_v any_o man_n of_o this_o assurance_n of_o such_o incomparable_a benefit_n as_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n have_v purchase_v for_o his_o elect_n will_v he_o ever_o persuade_v man_n that_o in_o christ_n we_o be_v make_v the_o adopt_a child_n of_o god_n no_o i_o assure_v you_o that_o be_v far_o from_o satan_n purpose_n he_o know_v that_o this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n serve_v not_o to_o advance_v but_o utter_o to_o overthrow_v his_o kingdom_n and_o therefore_o labour_v what_o he_o may_v to_o suppress_v the_o public_a preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n shall_v be_v hide_v from_o the_o knowledge_n of_o man_n so_o far_o be_v he_o off_o from_o further_a of_o the_o inward_a application_n of_o the_o same_o unto_o the_o comfort_n of_o our_o soul_n wherein_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n consist_v therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n the_o hypocrite_n do_v flatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o in_o their_o election_n it_o be_v not_o whole_o alone_o and_o principal_o in_o christ_n &_o from_o his_o death_n &_o passion_n that_o this_o persuasion_n arise_v but_o upon_o some_o other_o good_a like_n &_o cocker_a affection_n that_o they_o have_v unto_o their_o feign_a and_o hypocritical_a devotion_n while_o they_o take_v such_o slight_a and_o slender_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o themselves_o final_o this_o witness_n may_v be_v know_v by_o two_o notable_a and_o excellent_a effect_n attendant_a and_o wait_a upon_o the_o same_o first_o that_o the_o spirit_n do_v hereby_o shed_v abroad_o in_o our_o heart_n 5.5_o rom._n 5.5_o the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n for_o it_o make_v we_o to_o have_v a_o certain_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n towards_o us._n second_o upon_o this_o follow_v another_o effect_n and_o that_o be_v that_o upon_o this_o sense_n of_o love_n and_o shed_v of_o his_o tender_a mercy_n in_o our_o heart_n to_o the_o taste_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o soul_n it_o cause_v we_o withal_o to_o cry_v and_o call_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o name_n of_o father_n for_o now_o when_o we_o thus_o feel_v his_o love_n and_o mercy_n whether_o we_o cast_v our_o eye_n downward_o upon_o ourselves_o or_o upward_o upon_o the_o face_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n we_o see_v and_o behold_v he_o still_o as_o a_o gracious_a love_a merciful_a and_o compassionate_a father_n reconcile_v to_o we_o by_o and_o through_o christ_n and_o ourselves_o to_o be_v his_o adopt_a son_n and_o child_n who_o he_o in_o his_o eternal_a purpose_n in_o grace_n and_o mercy_n have_v select_v and_o ordain_v unto_o life_n and_o that_o by_o and_o through_o the_o same_o our_o saviour_n jesus_n christ_n his_o dear_a son_n hitherto_o of_o the_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n let_v we_o now_o come_v to_o the_o outward_a fruit_n of_o our_o regeneration_n chap._n xxxv_o of_o the_o outward_a fruit_n of_o regeneration_n hypocrite_n aswell_o as_o the_o regenerate_v have_v in_o outward_a show_n many_o good_a deed_n whereby_o they_o gain_v to_o themselves_o no_o small_a praise_n and_o commendation_n of_o devotion_n and_o
consider_v we_o may_v plain_o see_v that_o it_o be_v a_o thing_n of_o no_o difficulty_n for_o the_o person_n regenerate_v to_o make_v a_o true_a difference_n betwixt_o himself_o and_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o betwixt_o his_o own_o work_n and_o the_o work_n of_o a_o hypocrite_n and_o so_o in_o himself_o he_o may_v be_v assure_v that_o if_o his_o work_n be_v do_v in_o faith_n in_o humility_n and_o love_n and_o to_o those_o good_a and_o godly_a end_n as_o i_o have_v declare_v how_o near_o so_o ever_o they_o appear_v to_o the_o work_n of_o hypocrite_n in_o matter_n yet_o differ_v so_o far_o from_o they_o in_o manner_n they_o be_v doubtless_o the_o true_a fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n and_o therefore_o himself_o also_o undoubted_o to_o be_v in_o the_o tale_n and_o number_n of_o god_n adopt_a child_n chap._n xxxvi_o of_o the_o second_o objection_n hitherto_o we_o have_v show_v how_o the_o man_n regenerate_v may_v be_v assure_v of_o his_o adoption_n now_o we_o be_v come_v to_o the_o other_o objection_n which_o be_v that_o the_o righteous_a man_n and_o regenerate_a may_v fall_v again_o and_o therefore_o that_o all_o this_o which_o have_v be_v say_v be_v not_o to_o any_o purpose_n or_o effect_n for_o that_o he_o be_v not_o assure_v of_o his_o continuance_n and_o perseverance_n unto_o the_o end_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o this_o doctrine_n thus_o urge_v the_o final_a fall_n of_o the_o faithful_a be_v indeed_o as_o far_o from_o the_o truth_n as_o truth_n itself_o be_v say_v to_o be_v from_o falsehood_n for_o what_o a_o dangerous_a point_n of_o doctrine_n be_v it_o that_o i_o speak_v no_o hardly_o that_o any_o man_n shall_v once_o think_v that_o they_o which_o be_v once_o renew_v and_o regenerate_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o sanctification_n can_v afterward_o relapse_n and_o fall_v away_o without_o recovery_n this_o doctrine_n i_o may_v very_o well_o call_v dangerous_a because_o it_o be_v a_o doctrine_n first_o broach_v by_o satan_n himself_o the_o author_n of_o all_o mischief_n &_o therefore_o very_o prejudicial_a unto_o man_n salvation_n and_o not_o in_o any_o hand_n to_o be_v of_o we_o receive_v or_o hearken_v unto_o yea_o which_o be_v more_o it_o be_v find_v to_o be_v very_o injurious_a even_o to_o all_o the_o person_n in_o the_o deity_n in_o that_o their_o eternal_a decree_n be_v thereby_o as_o far_o as_o satan_n can_v prevail_v falsify_v &_o make_v frustrate_a &_o void_a nay_o this_o rather_o ought_v to_o be_v write_v and_o register_v for_o a_o undoubted_a and_o everlasting_a truth_n in_o the_o heart_n &_o upon_o the_o table_n of_o every_o faithful_a &_o christian_a soul_n that_o they_o that_o be_v once_o thorough_o and_o effectual_o call_v &_o regenerate_v can_v never_o fall_v away_o for_o ever_o but_o shall_v &_o must_v continue_v &_o persevere_v unto_o the_o end_n once_o regenerate_v &_o in_o the_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o ever_o so_o whatsoever_o satan_n &_o thy_o sinful_a flesh_n can_v devise_v &_o practice_v against_o thou_o my_o reason_n to_o prove_v this_o my_o assertion_n be_v as_o follow_v the_o first_o reason_n be_v bring_v from_o the_o certainty_n and_o immutability_n of_o the_o decree_n of_o god_n election_n reason_n 1._o reason_n for_o this_o decree_n can_v by_o any_o mean_n which_o satan_n can_v devise_v be_v alter_v and_o change_v for_o they_o that_o be_v predestinate_a unto_o life_n shall_v never_o be_v conden_v and_o contrariwise_o they_o that_o be_v ordain_v unto_o death_n shall_v out_o of_o doubt_n be_v never_o save_v the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o god_n who_o be_v the_o author_n of_o this_o decree_n do_v never_o alter_v or_o change_v &_o therefore_o his_o decree_n &_o purpose_n can_v be_v alter_v or_o change_v if_o it_o be_v so_o that_o his_o counsel_n can_v be_v change_v in_o this_o point_n these_o inconvenience_n will_v then_o follow_v that_o either_o god_n can_v not_o perform_v what_o he_o have_v decree_v and_o determine_v or_o else_o that_o in_o continuance_n of_o time_n the_o same_o decree_n may_v be_v better_v &_o amend_v both_o which_o be_v far_o from_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n either_o not_o to_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v his_o will_n or_o not_o to_o see_v even_o at_o first_o and_o before_o all_o time_n what_o be_v agreeable_a to_o his_o own_o nature_n and_o most_o behooveful_a for_o his_o own_o glory_n this_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o of_o all_o the_o faithful_a to_o be_v receive_v as_o a_o undoubted_a verity_n that_o as_o god_n have_v be_v most_o wise_a and_o prudent_a before_o all_o beginning_n in_o his_o counsel_n and_o decree_n so_o he_o be_v and_o shall_v continue_v most_o powerful_a even_o for_o all_o eternity_n in_o perform_v and_o effect_v of_o the_o same_o wherefore_o since_o the_o election_n of_o every_o one_o of_o god_n faithful_a child_n be_v a_o thing_n so_o certain_a and_o so_o immutable_a that_o it_o can_v never_o change_v and_o since_o it_o be_v also_o prove_v that_o every_o one_o of_o the_o elect_n in_o his_o due_a time_n may_v assure_v himself_o that_o he_o be_v elect_v it_o also_o follow_v of_o necessity_n that_o he_o may_v in_o like_a sort_n assure_v himself_o of_o his_o continuance_n and_o perseverance_n unto_o the_o end_n nay_o i_o add_v further_o that_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v no_o less_o because_o that_o otherwise_o he_o shall_v make_v god_n to_o be_v variable_a and_o uncertain_a in_o his_o decree_n and_o purpose_n as_o one_o want_v either_o wisdom_n sufficient_a beforehand_o to_o decree_n and_o purpose_n or_o power_n in_o time_n appoint_v to_o perform_v his_o will_n in_o who_o the_o scripture_n have_v teach_v we_o to_o account_v both_o these_o namely_o his_o wisdom_n and_o power_n and_o also_o all_o other_o his_o essential_a property_n to_o be_v in_o the_o high_a degree_n of_o all_o perfection_n yea_o beyond_o all_o measure_n and_o account_n the_o second_o reason_n be_v bring_v from_o the_o motive_n cause_n of_o this_o election_n reason_n 2_o reason_n whole_o and_o alone_o in_o god_n love_n and_o in_o his_o glory_n for_o because_o of_o himself_o he_o love_v we_o therefore_o he_o elect_v we_o and_o because_o he_o will_v in_o this_o sort_n be_v glorify_v in_o we_o he_o so_o decree_v of_o us._n the_o cause_n be_v durable_a continual_a and_o subject_a to_o no_o change_n and_o how_o can_v then_o our_o election_n cease_v to_o be_v perpetual_a god_n love_n be_v limit_v with_o no_o time_n but_o who_o he_o love_v he_o love_v with_o a_o everlasting_a love_n and_o when_o think_v you_o shall_v that_o time_n be_v ever_o find_v wherein_o god_n will_v not_o be_v most_o careful_a to_o perform_v that_o which_o he_o in_o wisdom_n find_v to_o be_v most_o convenient_a and_o behooveful_a for_o his_o own_o glory_n so_o that_o as_o sure_a as_o god_n can_v never_o cease_v to_o love_v and_o never_o leave_v to_o further_a his_o own_o glory_n and_o honour_n so_o sure_o also_o and_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o they_o that_o be_v elect_v shall_v never_o cease_v to_o be_v elect_a for_o ever_o the_o three_o argument_n be_v bring_v from_o the_o care_n of_o christ_n reason_n 3_o reason_n unto_o who_o we_o be_v by_o a_o effectual_a
