the_o world_n who_o will_v acknowledge_v their_o friend_n no_o long_o than_o they_o be_v in_o prosperity_n and_o be_v able_a to_o requite_v their_o kindness_n with_o kindness_n again_o some_o such_o beast_n there_o be_v that_o if_o they_o be_v either_o advance_v into_o high_a place_n above_o their_o parent_n or_o their_o parent_n their_o brethren_n sister_n and_o friend_n fall_v into_o decay_n and_o poverty_n will_v scarce_o own_v they_o but_o grow_v to_o be_v ashamed_a of_o they_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o betwixt_o the_o lord_n and_o his_o people_n when_o they_o be_v up_o to_o the_o knee_n in_o dirt_n when_o they_o be_v cruel_o oppress_v when_o in_o a_o poor_a and_o base_a condition_n it_o may_v be_v not_o have_v clothes_n to_o cover_v their_o nakedness_n when_o their_o cheek_n look_v pale_a and_o their_o face_n lean_a and_o wan_a through_o hunger_n sorrow_n or_o sickness_n when_o they_o be_v grow_v out_o of_o favour_n through_o bodily_a disease_n they_o be_v even_o then_o as_o lovely_a in_o the_o lord_n eye_n as_o ever_o and_o he_o will_v then_o acknowledge_v we_o for_o his_o people_n aswell_o nay_o better_o then_o in_o our_o great_a prosperity_n if_o a_o child_n be_v sick_a in_o the_o family_n how_o be_v the_o thought_n and_o mind_n of_o the_o parent_n take_v up_o about_o that_o child_n how_o do_v they_o tend_v it_o and_o pity_v it_o o_o my_o poor_a sick_a child_n etc._n etc._n thus_o do_v the_o lord_n pity_v his_o child_n and_o tender_v they_o in_o their_o affliction_n use_v 1_o affliction_n now_o to_o make_v some_o application_n of_o the_o point_n be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o persuasion_n of_o god_n love_n be_v a_o great_a help_n to_o carry_v we_o cheerful_o through_o affliction_n here_o hence_o then_o we_o may_v be_v instruct_v what_o the_o cause_n be_v that_o we_o be_v so_o much_o trouble_v and_o perplex_v with_o affliction_n as_o if_o they_o be_v the_o mean_n of_o our_o undo_n that_o the_o very_a thought_n or_o expectation_n of_o they_o be_v most_o grievous_a and_o irksome_a unto_o we_o certain_o here_o be_v the_o ground_n of_o all_o our_o fear_n and_o doubt_n the_o want_n of_o a_o sound_a persuasion_n and_o assurance_n of_o god_n love_n in_o the_o devil_n when_o we_o repine_v against_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n when_o we_o be_v impatient_a in_o affliction_n and_o question_v his_o love_n for_o correct_v we_o the_o devil_n desire_v that_o job_n may_v be_v sore_o afflict_v that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v bring_v to_o curse_n god_n stretch_v now_o out_o thy_o hand_n and_o touch_v his_o bone_n and_o his_o flesh_n to_o see_v if_o he_o will_v not_o blaspheme_v thou_o to_o thy_o face_n job_n 2.5_o it_o be_v a_o pastime_n unto_o the_o devil_n to_o set_v god_n and_o his_o child_n at_o variance_n and_o therefore_o he_o desire_v to_o vex_v and_o perplex_v we_o that_o so_o we_o may_v open_v our_o mouth_n against_o the_o lord_n and_o quarrel_n with_o he_o for_o when_o we_o be_v discontent_v with_o the_o lord_n deal_v when_o we_o mutter_v and_o murmur_v against_o the_o lord_n what_o do_v we_o less_o than_o rebel_n against_o he_o hence_o it_o be_v that_o moses_n call_v the_o murmur_a israelite_n rebel_n numb_a 20_o 10._o hear_v now_o you_o rebel_n shall_v we_o bring_v you_o water_n out_o of_o this_o rock_n therefore_o murmur_v not_o against_o the_o lord_n for_o than_o thou_o rebelle_v against_o he_o and_o rob_v he_o as_o much_o as_o in_o thou_o lie_v of_o his_o most_o glorious_a attribute_n his_o power_n his_o goodness_n his_o love_n his_o truth_n when_o we_o deal_v with_o that_o man_n which_o make_v conscience_n of_o his_o unto_o god_n will_n and_o then_o whatsoever_o thy_o sin_n have_v be_v whatsoever_o thy_o tentation_n distraction_n fear_n or_o doubt_n be_v if_o thou_o will_v believe_v the_o lord_n will_v gracious_o shall_v feel_v the_o smart_n of_o it_o much_o abate_v holy_a job_n be_v bring_v to_o a_o low_a and_o pitiful_a condition_n when_o he_o desire_v to_o he_o let_v alone_o while_o he_o may_v swallow_v his_o spittle_n job_n 7.19_o yet_o even_o then_o job_n wonder_v at_o the_o goodness_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n that_o he_o will_v think_v he_o worthy_a the_o melt_a and_o try_v what_o be_v man_n undoubted_o persuade_v that_o when_o god_n come_v near_o thou_o with_o affliction_n he_o be_v near_o thou_o in_o affection_n that_o when_o he_o correct_v thou_o he_o love_v thou_o for_o until_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n be_v thorough_o persuade_v hereof_o he_o shall_v never_o take_v comfort_n in_o nor_o pick_v any_o good_a out_o of_o his_o affliction_n imagine_v with_o i_o a_o man_n who_o have_v his_o enemy_n he_o be_v cast_v into_o prison_n if_o he_o be_v persuade_v of_o the_o king_n love_n he_o will_v rest_v content_v know_v and_o believe_v that_o the_o king_n will_v honour_v he_o for_o his_o reproach_n and_o ere_o it_o be_v long_o set_v he_o free_v again_o even_o so_o it_o be_v with_o every_o one_o that_o be_v persuade_v of_o god_n love_n in_o his_o affliction_n therefore_o as_o at_o all_o time_n so_o especial_o in_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n god_n child_n shall_v live_v by_o faith_n affliction_n be_v like_a to_o do_v we_o little_a good_a if_o it_o be_v not_o temper_v with_o faith_n as_o that_o meat_n which_o we_o take_v into_o our_o stomach_n concoct_v not_o if_o the_o native_a heat_n be_v defective_a and_o want_v even_o so_o that_o affliction_n which_o be_v administer_v unto_o we_o will_v profit_v we_o little_a if_o faith_n be_v want_v unto_o we_o faith_n still_v the_o heart_n even_o in_o our_o sore_a and_o great_a affliction_n persuade_v we_o of_o god_n child_n good_a and_o welfare_n do_v not_o whole_o consist_v in_o provide_v of_o meat_n drink_n and_o apparel_n for_o they_o but_o partly_o in_o correct_v of_o they_o for_o their_o good_a and_o partly_o in_o provide_v of_o physic_n for_o they_o when_o they_o be_v any_o way_n distemper_v even_o so_o almighty_a god_n our_o merciful_a and_o love_a father_n do_v no_o less_o love_v we_o when_o he_o correct_v &_o afflict_v we_o which_o as_o you_o have_v hear_v be_v the_o physick_n of_o our_o soul_n then_o when_o he_o provide_v outward_a necessary_n for_o we_o and_o this_o faith_n do_v persuade_v the_o heart_n of_o for_o faith_n judge_v not_o of_o thing_n by_o sense_n or_o outward_a appearance_n but_o as_o the_o truth_n be_v in_o jesus_n christ_n justify_v the_o lord_n in_o all_o his_o way_n always_o magnify_v the_o wise_a and_o holy_a proceed_n of_o our_o good_a god_n as_o the_o only_o best_a and_o most_o profitable_a for_o we_o it_o be_v only_o the_o apprehension_n of_o some_o loss_n the_o fear_n of_o some_o evil_n or_o the_o sense_n of_o god_n wrath_n and_o displeasure_n in_o our_o affliction_n which_o make_v the_o heart_n so_o sad_a and_o the_o spirit_n so_o lumpish_a in_o the_o time_n of_o affliction_n then_o set_v thy_o faith_n on_o work_n and_o it_o will_v blow_v over_o all_o these_o cloud_n it_o will_v answer_v all_o carnal_a doubt_n and_o reason_n and_o so_o settle_v the_o heart_n in_o a_o constant_a persuasion_n of_o god_n love_n that_o we_o shall_v rejoice_v and_o be_v thankful_a for_o our_o affliction_n because_o we_o know_v and_o believe_v even_o so_o if_o our_o eye_n be_v so_o fix_v upon_o our_o present_a affliction_n that_o we_o see_v not_o the_o future_a good_a which_o through_o the_o love_n of_o god_n unto_o we_o they_o will_v bring_v we_o we_o shall_v very_o hardly_o be_v uphold_v in_o the_o time_n of_o our_o affliction_n but_o if_o we_o look_v off_o the_o affliction_n and_o fasten_v our_o eye_n upon_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o that_o good_a he_o will_v do_v we_o for_o that_o evil_n which_o we_o patient_o and_o thankful_o sustain_v how_o joyful_o how_o content_o how_o sweet_o may_v we_o sit_v down_o and_o bless_v god_n for_o afflict_v of_o we_o object_n but_o may_v some_o weak_a believer_n object_n and_o say_v i_o make_v no_o question_n but_o that_o god_n in_o love_n do_v chasten_v some_o of_o his_o child_n but_o how_o can_v i_o believe_v that_o my_o affliction_n be_v token_n of_o his_o love_n when_o as_o i_o find_v and_o feel_v no_o good_a that_o have_v come_v unto_o i_o through_o they_o nay_o i_o fear_v i_o be_o the_o worse_a for_o they_o for_o i_o be_o now_o more_o impatient_a more_o uncheerefull_a and_o more_o distrustful_a of_o the_o love_n and_o providence_n of_o god_n then_o ever_o i_o be_v before_o answ_n to_o favour_v thy_o weakness_n a_o little_a let_v i_o tell_v thou_o that_o it_o may_v be_v this_o be_v but_o one_o of_o satan_n wile_n &_o enterprise_n
to_o rob_v thou_o of_o that_o good_a he_o see_v thy_o affliction_n be_v like_a to_o do_v thou_o and_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o so_o distrustfulll_v of_o god_n love_n nor_o so_o unbelieved_a as_o the_o if_o a_o man_n shall_v judge_v of_o his_o future_a strength_n or_o a_o woman_n of_o her_o beauty_n by_o their_o present_a condition_n of_o sickness_n therefore_o howsoever_o no_o good_a by_o affliction_n may_v appear_v at_o first_o but_o the_o contrary_a rather_o there_o be_v much_o impatience_n infidelity_n etc._n etc._n yet_o know_v thou_o that_o no_o man_n grace_n be_v to_o be_v lord_n why_o do_v thou_o reject_v my_o soul_n and_o hide_v thy_o face_n from_o i_o thy_o indignation_n go_v over_o i_o and_o thy_o fear_n have_v cut_v i_o off_o psal_n 88.15_o 16._o i_o allege_v not_o peter_n say_v now_o for_o a_o season_n if_o need_v require_v you_o be_v in_o heaviness_n through_o manifold_a tentation_n 1._o pet._n 1.6_o but_o in_o our_o heaviness_n these_o caution_n must_v be_v observe_v first_o our_o sorrow_n must_v be_v great_a for_o our_o sin_n which_o bring_v the_o affliction_n then_o for_o the_o affliction_n itself_o second_o we_o must_v not_o be_v excessive_a but_o dry_v not_o up_o our_o bone_n impair_v not_o our_o strength_n or_o make_v we_o unfit_a for_o public_a employment_n three_o and_o last_o if_o it_o withdraw_v not_o the_o heart_n from_o god_n and_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o worship_n and_o service_n object_n but_o the_o weak_a believer_n will_v still_o object_v and_o say_v if_o my_o trouble_n and_o affliction_n be_v only_o bodily_a and_o outward_a i_o make_v no_o question_n but_o i_o shall_v see_v god_n love_n in_o they_o but_o my_o wound_n and_o grief_n be_v inward_a and_o spiritual_a i_o can_v find_v or_o feel_v the_o sweet_a comfort_n of_o god_n spirit_n i_o see_v the_o angry_a countenance_n of_o god_n bend_v against_o i_o for_o my_o sin_n god_n i_o think_v look_v not_o now_o upon_o i_o with_o the_o amiable_a countenance_n of_o a_o love_a father_n but_o with_o the_o face_n of_o a_o severe_a and_o strict_a judge_n ready_a to_o take_v vengeance_n upon_o i_o for_o my_o sin_n how_o can_v i_o then_o be_v persuade_v either_o or_o god_n love_n or_o that_o my_o case_n be_v good_a or_o that_o good_a be_v intend_v i_o by_o this_o affliction_n answ_n howsoever_o these_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a affliction_n be_v the_o sore_a of_o all_o trial_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n may_v sustain_v his_o bodily_a infirmity_n but_o a_o wound_a spirit_n who_o can_v bear_v prov._n 18.14_o yet_o i_o will_v have_v thou_o know_v that_o even_o these_o inward_a and_o sad_a affliction_n be_v no_o other_o than_o be_v incident_a unto_o the_o best_a of_o god_n child_n and_o wherewith_o the_o lord_n in_o love_n do_v afflict_v they_o for_o the_o lord_n see_v as_o we_o have_v speak_v before_o what_o his_o child_n stand_v in_o most_o need_n of_o out_o of_o his_o deep_a and_o unsearchable_a wisdom_n he_o single_v out_o and_o make_v choice_n of_o those_o trial_n which_o shall_v make_v most_o for_o our_o spiritual_a good_a the_o lord_n ever_o pitch_v upon_o that_o affliction_n which_o shall_v work_v best_a upon_o we_o and_o serve_v most_o punctual_o to_o humble_a and_o awe_v we_o some_o he_o afflict_v with_o variety_n of_o worldly_a cross_n as_o in_o their_o child_n or_o outward_a estate_n some_o he_o do_v extraordinary_o exercise_v with_o spiritual_a conflict_n and_o trouble_n of_o conscience_n thus_o sort_v out_o unto_o his_o child_n those_o several_a cross_n and_o correction_n which_o out_o of_o his_o unsearchable_a wisdom_n and_o their_o spiritual_a necessity_n he_o see_v most_o expedient_a for_o they_o therefore_o of_o what_o nature_n soever_o thy_o cross_n be_v do_v thou_o take_v it_o up_o see_v it_o please_v our_o wise_a god_n to_o exercise_v thou_o with_o it_o as_o thy_o portion_n it_o may_v be_v thou_o think_v thou_o no_o outward_a and_o worldly_a cross_n can_v go_v so_o near_o grow_v worldly_a or_o waspish_a or_o secure_v or_o proud_a now_o high_a spirit_n must_v be_v abase_v low_o note_n and_o the_o lord_n see_v that_o these_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a conflict_n be_v the_o best_a and_o sure_a way_n to_o humble_v we_o and_o to_o bring_v we_o out_o of_o love_n with_o sin_n and_o ourselves_o and_o more_o in_o love_n with_o his_o majesty_n he_o break_v up_o he_o rend_v and_o tear_n the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n with_o fear_n and_o terror_n that_o so_o it_o may_v be_v make_v more_o pliable_a and_o gentle_a more_o fit_a to_o receive_v and_o to_o retain_v that_o seed_n of_o grace_n which_o the_o lord_n be_v now_o cast_v into_o they_o therefore_o assure_v thyself_o that_o it_o be_v not_o for_o any_o want_n of_o love_n that_o the_o lord_n do_v lay_v so_o heavy_a
and_o safety_n who_o can_v say_v that_o abraham_n heart_n at_o the_o first_o smite_v he_o not_o for_o this_o evil_n yet_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o he_o fall_v into_o the_o same_o sin_n again_o he_o that_o peruse_v the_o book_n of_o the_o judge_n shall_v find_v israel_n fall_v into_o idolatry_n and_o upon_o correction_n humble_v and_o penitent_a and_o yet_o afterward_o again_o and_o again_o fall_v into_o the_o same_o wickedness_n they_o have_v former_o repent_v of_o be_v not_o ionas_n think_v you_o thorrow_o humble_v for_o his_o sin_n of_o stubbornness_n and_o disobedience_n when_o he_o away_o all_o sin_n nor_o free_v we_o from_o it_o but_o only_o weaken_v it_o and_o work_v the_o heart_n to_o a_o hatred_n and_o detestation_n of_o it_o and_o know_v that_o if_o thy_o sin_n when_o
