have_v purchase_v for_o his_o people_n to_o be_v possess_v and_o enjoy_v by_o they_o in_o heaven_n or_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v which_o though_o we_o may_v rational_o suppose_v will_v gradual_o differ_v as_o enjoy_v by_o infant_n from_o that_o to_o be_v possess_v and_o enjoy_v by_o adult_a believer_n especial_o who_o have_v attain_v to_o high_a degree_n in_o grace_n and_o holiness_n or_o have_v do_v and_o suffer_v much_o for_o christ_n here_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o as_o it_o will_v be_v the_o same_o for_o kind_n so_o it_o will_v be_v exceed_o great_a though_o the_o glory_n happiness_n and_o blessedness_n of_o the_o save_v as_o well_o as_o the_o misery_n of_o the_o damn_a will_v differ_v gradual_o yet_o the_o low_a degree_n of_o glory_n happiness_n and_o blessedness_n to_o be_v enjoy_v in_o heaven_n as_o also_o of_o misery_n to_o be_v suffer_v in_o hell_n will_v be_v unconceivable_o great_a the_o holy_a ghost_n tell_v we_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v nor_o ear_n hear_v neither_o have_v enter_v into_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n the_o thing_n that_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o they_o that_o love_v he_o that_o be_v for_o all_o they_o that_o love_v he_o in_o what_o latitude_n we_o be_v to_o understand_v these_o thing_n say_v to_o be_v prepare_v for_o they_o that_o love_n god_n we_o need_v not_o inquire_v be_v sure_a it_o be_v true_a of_o the_o thing_n prepare_v and_o reserve_v for_o saint_n in_o heaven_n they_o be_v thing_n that_o eye_n have_v not_o see_v nor_o ear_n hear_v neither_o have_v they_o enter_v into_o heart_n of_o man_n not_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o mere_o natural_a man_n so_o as_o to_o conceive_v what_o much_o less_o how_o great_a they_o be_v but_o not_o into_o the_o heart_n of_o spiritual_a or_o regenerate_a man_n so_o as_o full_o to_o apprehend_v what_o or_o how_o great_a and_o excellent_a they_o be_v and_o as_o this_o be_v true_a of_o thing_n that_o god_n have_v prepare_v for_o they_o that_o love_v he_o so_o it_o be_v alike_o true_a of_o the_o thing_n prepare_v for_o they_o that_o be_v belove_v of_o he_o though_o through_o the_o immaturity_n of_o their_o age_n they_o be_v incapable_a of_o a_o actual_a love_n to_o he_o the_o glory_n happiness_n and_o blessedness_n of_o the_o low_a saint_n in_o heaven_n whether_o die_v in_o infancy_n or_o live_v to_o year_n of_o maturity_n will_v quite_o surpass_v the_o present_a thought_n and_o apprehension_n of_o the_o most_o enlighten_v understanding_n and_o i_o say_v all_o that_o glory_n happiness_n and_o blessedness_n be_v include_v and_o intend_v in_o this_o term_n salvation_n they_o shall_v be_v save_v that_o be_v perfect_o free_v and_o deliver_v from_o all_o misery_n that_o man_n through_o sin_n be_v become_v subject_n to_o and_o instate_v in_o the_o contrary_a state_n of_o glory_n happiness_n and_o blessedness_n but_o 2._o for_o the_o other_o promise_n viz._n that_o of_o god_n be_v a_o god_n to_o they_o there_o be_v more_o difficulty_n in_o determine_v what_o be_v that_o good_a contain_v in_o and_o grant_v to_o the_o infant-seed_n of_o believer_n by_o it_o in_o the_o general_a this_o seem_v plain_a that_o it_o must_v be_v interpret_v and_o understand_v as_o appertain_v to_o infant_n as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v interpret_v and_o understand_v as_o appertain_v to_o the_o adult_n see_v we_o have_v no_o warrant_n from_o the_o scripture_n neither_o do_v the_o different_a capacity_n of_o infant_n and_o the_o adult_n necessitate_v we_o to_o interpret_v and_o understand_v it_o otherwise_o as_o appertain_v to_o the_o one_o than_o we_o do_v as_o appertain_v to_o the_o other_o and_o therefore_o we_o must_v a_o little_a inquire_v into_o and_o endeavour_v to_o state_n the_o true_a sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o this_o grand_a promise_n of_o the_o covenant_n wherein_o god_n promise_v to_o be_v a_o god_n to_o his_o people_n whether_o as_o appertain_v to_o infant_n or_o adult_a believer_n and_o thus_o take_v the_o covenant_n in_o a_o strict_a and_o proper_a sense_n for_o a_o mutual_a engagement_n between_o god_n and_o man_n so_o i_o conceive_v only_o these_o two_o thing_n be_v intend_v and_o include_v in_o it_o 1._o a_o mutual_a relation_n between_o god_n and_o his_o people_n be_v constitute_v and_o establish_v thereby_o and_o as_o by_o the_o constitution_n of_o this_o relation_n between_o god_n and_o his_o people_n they_o be_v bring_v nigh_o to_o he_o and_o he_o be_v nigh_o to_o they_o hence_o they_o be_v say_v to_o be_v near_o to_o god_n he_o also_o exalt_v the_o horn_n of_o his_o people_n the_o praise_n of_o all_o his_o saint_n even_o of_o the_o child_n of_o israel_n a_o people_n near_o unto_o he_o psal_n 148.14_o and_o if_o they_o be_v near_o to_o he_o he_o must_v needs_o be_v nigh_o to_o they_o so_o they_o have_v a_o mutual_a propriety_n and_o interest_n each_o in_o other_o hence_o be_v those_o appropriate_a term_n in_o scripture_n and_o that_o on_o both_o part_n hence_o on_o god_n part_n say_v he_o yea_o i_o swear_v unto_o thou_o and_o enter_v into_o a_o covenant_n with_o thou_o and_o thou_o become_v my_o ezek._n 16.8_o though_o god_n have_v a_o propriety_n in_o all_o creature_n they_o be_v all_o his_o yet_o we_o see_v he_o lay_v a_o peculiar_a claim_n to_o his_o people_n as_o have_v a_o more_o especial_a interest_n and_o propriety_n in_o they_o above_o what_o he_o have_v in_o other_o and_o that_o by_o virtue_n of_o the_o covenant_n enter_v with_o they_o so_o on_o the_o people_n of_o god_n part_n my_o beloved_n be_v i_o say_v the_o spouse_n cant._n 2.16_o oh_o my_o soul_n thou_o have_v say_v unto_o the_o lord_n thou_o be_v my_o lord_n psal_n 16.2_o and_o the_o like_a appropriate_a term_n we_o have_v frequent_o in_o scripture_n man_n by_o his_o sin_n have_v lose_v his_o propriety_n and_o interest_n in_o god_n hence_o whosoever_o now_o have_v a_o interest_n and_o propriety_n in_o he_o it_o must_v be_v by_o virtue_n of_o his_o own_o free_a gift_n and_o promise_n they_o only_o can_v ground_o lie_v claim_v to_o interest_n and_o propriety_n in_o he_o to_o who_o he_o promise_v to_o be_v a_o god_n hence_o his_o people_n hold_v their_o interest_n in_o he_o not_o by_o virtue_n of_o their_o relation_n to_o he_o as_o his_o creature_n but_o by_o the_o covenant_n enter_v with_o they_o wherein_o he_o have_v promise_v to_o be_v a_o god_n to_o they_o and_o take_v they_o to_o be_v his_o people_n and_o that_o be_v the_o first_o good_a contain_v in_o and_o convey_v to_o the_o infant-seed_n of_o believer_n by_o this_o promise_n there_o be_v a_o mutual_a relation_n constitute_v thereby_o between_o god_n and_o they_o by_o mean_n whereof_o they_o have_v a_o mutual_a interest_n and_o propriety_n each_o in_o other_o as_o they_o be_v god_n and_o therefore_o say_v to_o be_v bear_v to_o he_o and_o to_o be_v his_o child_n ezek._n 16.20_o 21._o so_o he_o be_v they_o and_o how_o great_a a_o good_a be_v that_o for_o god_n to_o give_v himself_o to_o the_o seed_n of_o all_o his_o attribute_n for_o their_o good_a benefit_n and_o advantage_n in_o a_o way_n agreeable_a to_o the_o whole_a covenant_n and_o their_o capability_n of_o receive_v any_o good_a benefit_n and_o advantage_n by_o that_o improvement_n and_o employment_n of_o his_o several_a attribute_n for_o they_o
as_o subject_n of_o the_o covenant_n viz._n save_v grace_n i_o have_v say_v so_o much_o to_o it_o once_o and_o again_o i_o need_v add_v no_o more_o at_o present_a that_o may_v suffice_v that_o the_o promise_v contain_v that_o good_a at_o least_o as_o it_o be_v mean_v of_o the_o first_o grace_n be_v not_o make_v to_o any_o in_o particular_a they_o be_v make_v to_o the_o church_n in_o general_n and_o answerable_o secure_v the_o good_a contain_v in_o they_o only_o to_o the_o elect_n and_o that_o hinder_v not_o but_o that_o god_n may_v extend_v his_o covenant_n in_o the_o sense_n intend_v to_o some_o that_o be_v not_o elect_v but_o let_v that_o suffice_v for_o the_o first_o thing_n to_o be_v prove_v second_o that_o this_o promise_n as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o do_v not_o necessary_o include_v or_o secure_v to_o all_o those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v make_v or_o to_o who_o it_o do_v appertain_v any_o surth_a love_n and_o favour_n from_o god_n that_o be_v peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_a as_o it_o do_v not_o nevessary_o imply_v or_o infer_v election_n or_o that_o all_o these_o to_o who_o it_o be_v make_v be_v elect_v and_o consequent_o belove_v with_o the_o love_n of_o election_n so_o it_o doew_fw-mi not_o necessary_o include_v or_o secureany_v consequent_a love_n or_o favour_n that_o be_v peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect._n this_o will_v appear_v if_o we_o consider_v what_o love_n and_o favour_n be_v peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_n and_o that_o fall_v under_o a_o twofold_a consideration_n first_o as_o a_o love_n of_o beneficence_n second_o as_o a_o love_n of_o complacence_n for_o the_o first_o and_o thus_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o express_v in_o a_o way_n of_o beneficence_n to_o the_o elect_n differ_v from_o that_o common_a love_n and_o favour_n vouchsase_v to_o man_n in_o general_a only_o in_o degree_n and_o those_o fruit_n and_o effect_n wherein_o it_o be_v express_v it_o be_v act_v more_o intense_o to_o speak_v of_o god_n after_o the_o manner_n of_o man_n and_o according_a to_o our_o shallow_a apprhension_n of_o he_o and_o in_o different_a effect_n and_o fruit_n than_o it_o be_v act_v and_o express_v towards_o man_n in_o general_a these_o effect_n and_o fruit_n which_o we_o be_v at_o present_a only_o concern_v in_o may_v in_o the_o general_n be_v reduce_v to_o these_o three_o head_n regeneration_n to_o a_o state_n of_o life_n preservation_n in_o that_o state_n and_o suture_a glorfication_n now_o none_o of_o these_o effect_n and_o fruit_n of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v necessary_o include_v in_o or_o secure_v by_o this_o promise_n as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o this_o have_v be_v sufficient_o prove_v already_o for_o if_o the_o first_o viz._n regeneration_n be_v not_o include_v in_o or_o secure_v by_o it_o neither_o of_o the_o two_o latter_a can_v in_o as_o much_o as_o they_o necessarity_n presuppose_v the_o antecedency_n of_o this_o now_o that_o this_o first_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o that_o special_a love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_n be_v not_o necessarity_n include_v in_o or_o secure_v by_o this_o promise_n be_v sufficiect_o evident_a from_o what_o have_v be_v already_o say_v therefore_o i_o shall_v add_v no_o more_o second_o for_o the_o latter_a viz._n the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o express_v in_o a_o way_n of_o complacency_n and_o delight_n and_o under_o this_o head_n we_o may_v comprehend_v all_o those_o thing_n wherein_o this_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n be_v express_v or_o whereby_o it_o be_v signify_v to_o those_o to_o who_o it_o be_v vouchsase_v as_o the_o signal_n manifestation_n of_o himself_o in_o christ_n in_o his_o smile_n upon_o the_o soul_n the_o shedding_n abroad_o of_o his_o love_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o like_a now_o that_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n as_o express_v this_o way_n be_v not_o necessary_o include_v in_o or_o secure_v by_o this_o promise_n as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o will_v necessary_o follow_v from_o what_o have_v be_v already_o say_v this_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n to_o man_n always_o suppose_v they_o true_o regenerrte_v and_o sanctify_v and_o consequent_o can_v be_v include_v in_o or_o secure_v by_o that_o promise_n in_o which_o regeneration_n and_o sanctification_n be_v not_o include_v or_o by_o which_o they_o be_v not_o secure_v or_o at_o lest_o which_o do_v not_o presuppose_v they_o already_o wrought_v and_o be_v act_v and_o express_v according_a to_o the_o degree_n of_o sanctification_n attain_v to_o the_o lively_a exercise_n of_o grace_n due_a performance_n of_o obedience_n and_o the_o like_a hence_o those_o that_o be_v true_o regenerate_v may_v so_o sink_v and_o degenerate_v in_o their_o sanctification_n exercise_n of_o grace_n and_o performance_n of_o obedience_n as_o that_o this_o love_n shall_v be_v act_v and_o express_v if_o at_o all_o yet_o in_o a_o very_a low_a and_o remiss_a degree_n whereas_o be_v it_o include_v in_o and_o secer_v by_o this_o promise_n as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o it_o will_v be_v act_v and_o express_v always_o alike_o towards_o all_o to_o who_o this_o promise_n do_v appertain_v so_o that_o to_o come_v to_o a_o close_a of_o this_o we_o may_v evident_o see_v that_o as_o interest_n in_o this_o promise_n do_v not_o universal_o flow_v from_o the_o eleut_a love_n of_o god_n he_o may_v make_v this_o promise_n to_o some_o that_o be_v not_o elect_v and_o thereby_o constitute_v a_o true_a and_o proper_a covenant-relation_n between_o himself_o &_o they_o and_o answerable_o vouchsafe_v they_o the_o token_n of_o his_o covenant_n and_o by_o the_o application_n of_o that_o to_o they_o solemn_o admit_v they_o into_o his_o church_n visible_a so_o no_o further_o or_o consequent_a love_n or_o favour_n that_o be_v peculiar_a and_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_n be_v necessary_o include_v in_o nor_o secure_v by_o that_o promise_n and_o consequent_o which_o be_v the_o thing_n assert_v this_o promise_v as_o take_v absolute_o and_o by_o itself_o
