principle_n be_v a_o gospel-principle_n though_o the_o action_n be_v ever_o so_o poor_a weak_a and_o mean_v in_o itself_o and_o despicable_a in_o the_o eye_n of_o other_o yet_o the_o action_n be_v good_a and_o accept_v of_o god_n if_o the_o law_n be_v the_o principle_n though_o the_o action_n be_v ever_o so_o glorious_a yet_o it_o be_v flesh_n and_o abominable_a to_o god_n why_o do_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 11._o so_o high_o commend_v the_o work_n of_o the_o godly_a patriarch_n many_o of_o which_o for_o the_o outward_a act_n be_v poor_a and_o low_a and_o mean_v but_o because_o the_o principle_n whence_o they_o do_v flow_v be_v a_o gospel-principle_n they_o spring_v from_o faith_n the_o worthiness_n of_o the_o principle_n make_v the_o action_n though_o ever_o so_o poor_a and_o scripture_n but_o because_o the_o principle_n whence_o they_o do_v flow_v be_v legal_a the_o principle_n be_v flesh_n though_o ever_o so_o shine_v and_o glorious_a otherwise_o to_o be_v filthy_a and_o abominable_a to_o god_n the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o rom._n 8._o those_o that_o be_v in_o the_o flesh_n can_v please_v god_n so_o let_v i_o say_v there_o be_v never_o a_o action_n which_o be_v a_o action_n of_o the_o flesh_n as_o every_o pure_a legal_a action_n be_v that_o either_o be_v or_o can_v be_v please_v to_o god_n yea_o the_o action_n of_o saint_n themselves_o have_v flesh_n in_o they_o will_v be_v abhor_v to_o god_n do_v not_o christ_n the_o high_a priest_n of_o the_o saint_n separate_v between_o the_o precious_a and_o the_o vile_a in_o their_o action_n and_o present_v only_o the_o he_o be_v a_o pharisee_n and_o walk_v legal_o all_o his_o pray_n be_v but_o a_o little_a of_o the_o flesh_n and_o god_n will_v not_o own_v it_o by_o the_o name_n of_o pray_v but_o now_o when_o there_o be_v a_o beam_n of_o gospel-light_n dart_v into_o his_o soul_n and_o a_o little_a of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n in_o his_o prayer_n god_n straightway_o own_v it_o behold_v he_o pray_v paul_n make_v many_o prayer_n before_o whilst_o he_o be_v a_o legalist_n and_o god_n will_v not_o own_o one_o of_o they_o and_o now_o he_o make_v but_o one_o with_o a_o little_a of_o the_o spirit_n and_o god_n straightway_o own_v that_o so_o there_o be_v many_o a_o man_n and_o woman_n that_o say_v over_o a_o prayer_n sometime_o and_o think_v god_n indebt_v to_o he_o when_o alas_o poor_a soul_n when_o the_o reckon_a day_n come_v wherein_o he_o expect_v his_o reward_n for_o his_o work_n he_o shall_v find_v to_o his_o woe_n that_o god_n will_v not_o own_o any_o of_o these_o his_o prayer_n but_o god_n will_v say_v to_o he_o as_o to_o those_o hypocritical_a faster_n the_o prophet_n speak_v of_o when_o you_o fast_v fast_v you_o at_o all_o to_o i_o even_o to_o i_o say_v the_o lord_n so_o will_v god_n say_v man_z woman_n thou_o have_v pray_v but_o do_v thou_o pray_v to_o i_o at_o all_o to_o i_o be_v not_o all_o thy_o prayer_n because_o thou_o be_v afraid_a of_o hell_n or_o because_o thy_o so_o much_o time_n in_o run_v to_o sermon_n and_o be_v so_o exact_a in_o your_o walk_n and_o converse_v with_o man_n why_o say_v a_o gospel-soul_n all_o this_o be_v my_o father_n work_n and_o i_o love_v my_o father_n love_n be_v the_o great_a gospel-motive_n as_o fear_v the_o great_a legal_a 4_o the_o manifestation_n or_o discovery_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n to_o the_o soul_n as_o the_o sonlike_a disposition_n which_o be_v natural_a move_v a_o saint_n to_o obedience_n and_o holy_a walk_n so_o the_o manifestation_n or_o discovery_n of_o the_o great_a love_n of_o god_n without_o towards_o he_o whilst_o he_o be_v a_o miserable_a sinner_n and_o rebel_n against_o god_n be_v very_o efficacious_a in_o a_o poor_a soul_n that_o see_v and_o behold_v the_o same_o to_o bring_v he_o with_o the_o prevalency_n of_o some_o lust_n or_o corruption_n if_o when_o he_o feel_v it_o stir_v he_o can_v look_v the_o same_o in_o the_o face_n and_o in_o faith_n say_v to_o it_o o_o my_o corruption_n though_o i_o shall_v now_o yield_v to_o thou_o yet_o this_o be_v certain_a i_o shall_v never_o perish_v for_o the_o business_n of_o my_o salvation_n be_v not_o now_o to_o be_v care_v for_o but_o that_o be_v past_a and_o over_o do_v and_o can_v be_v reverse_v i_o say_v i_o be_o persuade_v that_o this_o very_o say_v this_o by_o faith_n will_v give_v a_o more_o deadly_a blow_n to_o can_v he_o look_v satan_n in_o the_o face_n and_o say_v thou_o wretched_a devil_n thou_o will_v tempt_v i_o to_o this_o and_o the_o other_o evil_n to_o grieve_v god_n but_o what_o a_o fool_n be_v thou_o for_o shall_v i_o yield_v unto_o thou_o thy_o end_n will_v never_o be_v accomplish_v for_o thou_o shall_v never_o have_v i_o i_o shall_v never_o perish_v the_o say_v this_o in_o faith_n will_v more_o silence_v the_o tempter_n and_o suppress_v temptation_n than_o can_v be_v do_v in_o any_o other_o way_n this_o therefore_o be_v a_o strong_a motive_n to_o gospel-holiness_n and_o such_o a_o cheerfulness_n and_o delight_n than_o at_o another_o time_n may_v conclude_v that_o his_o obedience_n be_v a_o fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o walk_v after_o the_o gospel_n for_o how_o can_v it_o be_v legal_a see_v 1_o here_o be_v no_o work_n from_o slavish_a fear_n for_o what_o servile_a fear_n can_v there_o be_v when_o i_o know_v beforehand_o that_o my_o condition_n be_v sure_a it_o do_v thing_n but_o abundance_n relate_v to_o spiritual_a and_o eternal_a thing_n therefore_o say_v the_o apostle_n heb._n 8.6_o the_o new_a covenant_n that_o be_v the_o gospel_n be_v establish_v upon_o better_a promise_n than_o the_o old_a be_v yea_o the_o whole_a administration_n take_v it_o in_o the_o bulk_n be_v more_o spiritual_a and_o therefore_o when_o the_o apostle_n compare_v the_o two_o the_o law_n in_o the_o school_n of_o the_o law_n and_o be_v apprentice_n to_o the_o law_n they_o can_v hardly_o believe_v it_o the_o thing_n seem_v strange_a to_o they_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v from_o under_o their_o other_o master_n that_o they_o be_v free_v and_o therefore_o though_o they_o be_v indeed_o free_v from_o condemnation_n yet_o not_o believe_v it_o or_o with_o difficulty_n believe_v it_o and_o on_o the_o contrary_n be_v with_o ease_n persuade_v that_o they_o be_v still_o under_o the_o command_n of_o their_o old_a master_n their_o walk_n which_o have_v much_o dependence_n upon_o the_o know_n or_o believe_v this_o their_o freedom_n be_v not_o a_o pure_a gospel-walke_a but_o rather_o a_o old_a testament_n walk_v a_o walk_n much_o like_o unto_o the_o walk_n in_o these_o person_n although_o there_o be_v somewhat_o of_o the_o gospel_n at_o the_o bottom_n yet_o may_v there_o be_v much_o of_o the_o law_n at_o the_o top_n much_o doubt_v darkness_n fear_n terror_n etc._n etc._n and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o they_o may_v be_v true_a saint_n and_o gospel-walkers_a as_o the_o gospel_n be_v at_o the_o bottom_n of_o their_o action_n the_o spirit_n of_o god_n at_o the_o bottom_n though_o darkness_n fear_n terror_n etc._n etc._n at_o the_o top_n 2_o there_o be_v other_o who_o be_v not_o only_o free_v from_o condemnation_n but_o enjoy_v and_o believe_v this_o their_o freedom_n and_o know_v that_o the_o law_n their_o former_a husband_n have_v now_o nothing_o to_o do_v with_o they_o but_o they_o be_v only_o under_o the_o command_n of_o christ_n who_o be_v their_o king_n lawgiver_n and_o husband_n their_o walk_n be_v a_o pure_a gospel-walke_a i.e._n there_o be_v not_o that_o darkness_n doubt_v fear_n self-love_n in_o their_o walk_n as_o in_o the_o walk_v of_o the_o other_o but_o their_o action_n do_v spring_n from_o pure_a love_n to_o god_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n love_v to_o their_o neighbour_n etc._n etc._n now_o the_o thing_n that_o i_o have_v before_o speak_v of_o as_o touch_v gospel-walking_a do_v chief_o relate_v to_o these_o latter_a sort_n of_o person_n thus_o much_o for_o the_o open_n of_o this_o truth_n the_o application_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o it_o the_o whole_a walk_n of_o a_o gospel-saint_n so_o far_o as_o he_o walk_v according_a to_o the_o gospel_n be_v direct_v by_o the_o spirit_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v of_o all_o other_o the_o most_o excellent_a walk_v this_o gospel-walk_a it_o excel_v a_o pure_a natural_a walk_n or_o a_o legal_a walk_n in_o a_o pure_a natural_a walk_n there_o the_o principle_n be_v natural_a light_n &_o natural_a conscience_n in_o a_o legal_a walk_n there_o the_o principle_n be_v fear_n and_o apprehension_n of_o wrath_n but_o now_o in_o a_o gospel-walk_a the_o principle_n be_v the_o spirit_n now_o by_o how_o much_o the_o principle_n be_v more_o excellent_a by_o so_o much_o the_o action_n duty_n the_o walk_n be_v more_o excellent_a as_o let_v a_o man_n have_v two_o servant_n one_o serve_v he_o out_o of_o love_n and_o from_o a_o principle_n of_o ingenuity_n because_o he_o have_v receive_v some_o favour_n from_o the_o hand_n of_o his_o master_n the_o other_o serve_v he_o for_o fear_n or_o in_o hope_n to_o receive_v somewhat_o from_o his_o master_n he_o do_v the_o most_o excellent_a service_n that_o serve_v he_o out_o of_o love_n and_o from_o ingenuity_n because_o law_n as_o one_o say_v it_o do_v teach_v just_a as_o the_o commandment_n write_v upon_o the_o wall_n do_v a_o poor_a man_n come_v in_o and_o read_v they_o over_o and_o yet_o his_o heart_n be_v never_o the_o warm_a never_o the_o more_o fit_a to_o obey_v any_o of_o they_o because_o he_o read_v they_o there_o but_o now_o the_o gospel_n on_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n that_o bring_v power_n along_o with_o it_o a_o poor_a soul_n which_o before_o live_v in_o sin_n and_o think_v it_o impossible_a that_o ever_o he_o shall_v leave_v they_o or_o have_v they_o subdue_v now_o find_v a_o power_n within_o father_n he_o also_o himself_o in_o all_o our_o exigency_n and_o under_o all_o our_o infirmity_n make_v intercession_n for_o we_o so_o that_o we_o be_v for_o ever_o safe_a and_o secure_a from_o all_o fear_n and_o danger_n he_o ever_o live_v to_o make_v intercession_n for_o we_o from_o whence_o when_o all_o his_o elect_n of_o jew_n and_o gentile_n shall_v be_v call_v home_o he_o shall_v glorious_o come_v attend_v with_o his_o mighty_a angel_n and_o ten_o thousand_o of_o his_o saint_n when_o as_o the_o spouse_n be_v array_v in_o fine_a linen_n clean_a and_o white_a he_o shall_v take_v she_o to_o himself_o and_o celebrate_v his_o glorious_a marriage_n and_o have_v do_v justice_n upon_o all_o her_o enemy_n here_o below_o and_o judge_v quick_a and_o dead_a shall_v triumphant_o carry_v she_o with_o himself_o into_o his_o father_n kingdom_n where_o she_o shall_v for_o ever_o be_v with_o he_o where_o he_o be_v behold_v the_o glory_n the_o father_n have_v give_v he_o and_o enjoy_v with_o he_o fullness_n of_o glory_n fullness_n of_o joy_n and_o pleasure_n for_o evermore_o again_o yet_o far_o the_o thought_n whereof_o our_o thought_n shall_v be_v exercise_v about_o how_o that_o in_o the_o mean_a time_n that_o his_o people_n may_v be_v gather_v together_o and_o make_v meet_v to_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o inheritance_n of_o the_o saint_n in_o light_n he_o have_v and_o continual_o do_v send_v forth_o his_o spirit_n the_o great_a promise_n of_o the_o father_n together_o with_o messenger_n and_o ambassador_n have_v the_o everlasting_a gospel_n in_o their_o mouth_n whereby_o time_n full_o give_v to_o we_o it_o shall_v be_v the_o continual_a exercise_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o that_o which_o we_o shall_v be_v much_o take_v up_o with_o how_o we_o may_v come_v to_o attain_v and_o enjoy_v these_o thing_n so_o as_o may_v make_v for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n the_o good_a of_o other_o and_o our_o own_o comfort_n more_o it_o shall_v be_v our_o continual_a query_v o_o how_o shall_v i_o come_v to_o know_v more_o of_o christ_n more_o of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n how_o shall_v i_o come_v to_o believe_v in_o christ_n more_o to_o live_v by_o faith_n more_o to_o enjoy_v the_o fruit_n and_o comfort_n of_o my_o election_n through_o grace_n my_o redemption_n justification_n by_o christ_n adoption_n in_o he_o union_n with_o he_o more_o how_o shall_v i_o come_v to_o be_v more_o sanctify_v by_o the_o spirit_n make_v more_o conformable_a to_o he_o have_v more_o of_o his_o image_n imprint_v upon_o i_o feel_v he_o more_o in_o his_o death_n and_o resurrection_n have_v more_o fellowship_n with_o he_o in_o his_o suffering_n o_o how_o shall_v i_o come_v to_o have_v corruption_n in_o i_o daily_o more_o mortify_v my_o pride_n mortify_v my_o unbelief_n mortify_v my_o corrupt_a affection_n and_o passion_n mortify_v my_o lukewarmness_n earthly-mindedness_a deadness_n formality_n in_o duty_n mortify_v how_o shall_v i_o come_v to_o have_v my_o grace_n more_o quicken_v my_o faith_n love_n godly-sorrow_n humility_n self-denial_n patience_n thankfulness_n contentedness_n quicken_v o_o how_o shall_v i_o have_v a_o heart_n carry_v out_o more_o to_o glorify_v god_n in_o the_o place_n calling_z i_o be_o in_o time_n opportunity_n i_o have_v how_o shall_v i_o have_v a_o frame_n of_o heart_n to_o go_v about_o the_o service_n of_o god_n more_o free_o willing_o cheerful_o and_o to_o act_v in_o it_o more_o pure_o sincere_o every_o day_n than_o other_o such_o thing_n and_o question_n as_o these_o be_v i_o call_v spiritual_a thing_n and_o they_o be_v the_o thing_n our_o heart_n shall_v be_v exercise_v about_o object_n must_v a_o saint_n only_o be_v exercise_v about_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v there_o not_o some_o external_a thing_n which_o a_o saint_n must_v exercise_v himself_o in_o and_o about_o answ_n yes_o there_o be_v outward_a civil_a employment_n which_o a_o saint_n as_o a_o man_n be_v with_o moderation_n to_o be_v exercise_v about_o and_o also_o there_o be_v outward_a ordinance_n and_o institution_n of_o jesus_n christ_n which_o a_o saint_n as_o he_o be_v a_o christian_n out_o of_o obedience_n to_o his_o master_n command_n so_o far_o as_o the_o same_o be_v make_v clear_a to_o he_o be_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o and_o about_o in_o exercise_v himself_o in_o which_o though_o the_o thing_n themselves_o be_v external_a yet_o he_o enjoy_v much_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n therefore_o i_o do_v not_o oppose_v spiritual_a thing_n to_o all_o thing_n external_a neither_o will_v i_o be_v so_o understand_v for_o though_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o meat_n and_o drink_n yet_o meat_n and_o drink_n be_v useful_a in_o their_o place_n and_o man_n in_o a_o ordinary_a way_n can_v live_v without_o it_o but_o now_o when_o i_o speak_v of_o a_o saint_n exercise_v himself_o in_o spiritual_n i_o oppose_v spiritual_a 1_o to_o thing_n express_o forbid_v which_o be_v simple_o in_o themselves_o evil_a and_o sinful_a be_v thing_n not_o convenient_a nor_o become_a saint_n eph._n 5.3_o 4._o but_o fornication_n and_o all_o uncleanness_n or_o covetousness_n let_v it_o not_o be_v once_o name_v among_o you_o as_o become_v saint_n neither_o filthiness_n nor_o foolish_a talk_n nor_o jest_v which_o be_v not_o convenient_a profane_a course_n become_v no_o man_n but_o worst_a of_o all_o a_o saint_n 2_o to_o thing_n light_a and_o frivolous_a thing_n indeed_o unworthy_a the_o thought_n of_o a_o saint_n
worse_a than_o the_o former_a when_o man_n do_v not_o only_o study_v nicety_n and_o make_v law_n for_o themselves_o but_o when_o they_o have_v so_o do_v will_v make_v law_n for_o their_o brethren_n and_o bind_v their_o conscience_n to_o those_o law_n which_o they_o themselves_o have_v make_v now_o will_v thou_o exercise_v thyself_o in_o thing_n of_o this_o nature_n take_v heed_n than_o thou_o make_v not_o thy_o conscience_n the_o rule_n of_o thy_o brother_n neither_o make_v law_n over_o he_o in_o such_o thing_n as_o thou_o can_v not_o assure_v his_o conscience_n christ_n have_v make_v they_o i_o have_v rather_o yield_v in_o a_o hundred_o thing_n of_o this_o nature_n to_o a_o brother_n weakness_n than_o by_o a_o absolute_a law_n of_o his_o make_n to_o be_v bind_v up_o to_o one_o let_v saint_n therefore_o be_v wary_a of_o tie_v their_o brethren_n hand_n and_o foot_n in_o such_o thing_n wherein_o christ_n have_v leave_v they_o free_a for_o saint_n if_o tie_v will_v not_o do_v that_o which_o if_o they_o be_v leave_v to_o their_o liberty_n they_o ought_v to_o do_v as_o i_o remember_v luther_n say_v to_o the_o papist_n about_o eat_v their_o meat_n and_o observe_v their_o day_n leave_v we_o say_v he_o to_o our_o liberty_n we_o will_v cat_n your_o meat_n observe_v your_o day_n but_o bound_v we_o hereto_o and_o we_o will_v do_v neither_o 5_o and_o last_o take_v heed_n thy_o spirit_n grow_v not_o hence_o by_o degree_n to_o a_o affectation_n of_o novelty_n or_o new_a thing_n many_o there_o be_v who_o first_o take_v delight_n to_o pry_v into_o dark_a and_o curious_a question_n and_o when_o they_o have_v go_v on_o thus_o a_o while_n there_o be_v nothing_o will_v please_v they_o but_o new_a thing_n and_o curious_a thing_n they_o grow_v out_o of_o love_n with_o old_a truth_n and_o spiritual_a heart_n matter_n these_o be_v fetch_v by_o and_o it_o must_v be_v some_o fine_a new_a tickle_a question_n that_o be_v fit_a matter_n only_o for_o their_o thought_n and_o meditation_n and_o as_o for_o all_o thing_n else_o they_o account_v they_o but_o low_a thing_n and_o those_o that_o hold_v they_o and_o press_v they_o man_n of_o low_a light_n and_o of_o a_o low_a form_n as_o they_o say_v i_o be_o almost_o confident_a of_o if_o that_o most_o of_o the_o error_n this_o day_n broach_v or_o on_o foot_n in_o england_n or_o elsewhere_o do_v grow_v out_o of_o this_o root_n viz._n a_o neglect_n of_o exercise_v the_o heart_n about_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o a_o desire_n to_o be_v always_o pry_v into_o dark_a thing_n from_o whence_o by_o degree_n there_o creep_v into_o the_o soul_n a_o love_n of_o novelty_n and_o new_a matter_n which_o no_o soon_o be_v in_o any_o but_o the_o heart_n be_v as_o prone_a and_o apt_a to_o suck_v in_o error_n as_o a_o sponge_n water_n and_o of_o all_o spirit_n in_o search_v after_o truth_n i_o shall_v desire_v the_o lord_n to_o keep_v i_o from_o this_o a_o spirit_n delight_v itself_o in_o and_o affect_v novelty_n and_o new_a thing_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o point_n with_o the_o application_n i_o shall_v leave_v to_o the_o next_o opportunity_n the_o second_o sermon_n on_o 1_o tim._n 6.11_o fellow_n after_o righteousness_n godliness_n etc._n etc._n the_o last_o opportunity_n i_o have_v in_o this_o place_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o the_o apostle_n give_v these_o word_n as_o a_o direction_n to_o his_o scholar_n timothy_n and_o in_o he_o to_o all_o believer_n how_o to_o escape_v the_o dangerous_a error_n and_o evil_n that_o then_o be_v or_o at_o any_o time_n shall_v be_v abroad_o the_o direction_n be_v to_o follow_v after_o righteousness_n godliness_n etc._n etc._n as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v employ_v thyself_o and_o thy_o heart_n about_o these_o thing_n and_o there_o be_v no_o fear_n of_o receive_v hurt_v by_o the_o other_o in_o general_n i_o tell_v you_o the_o thing_n he_o mention_n be_v all_o spiritual_a thing_n whence_o i_o lay_v before_o you_o this_o observation_n viz._n doct._n that_o the_o only_a and_o special_a way_n for_o a_o saint_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o error_n and_o evil_n of_o the_o time_n he_o live_v in_o be_v to_o have_v his_o heart_n as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v take_v up_o with_o and_o his_o spirit_n exercise_v about_o high_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o prove_v it_o then_o unto_o you_o and_o also_o show_v you_o what_o i_o do_v mean_a by_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o now_o proceed_v to_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o exercise_v the_o heart_n about_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v such_o a_o preservative_n against_o the_o error_n and_o evil_n of_o the_o time_n we_o live_v in_o reas_n 1._o because_o such_o a_o heart_n as_o be_v exercise_v about_o spiritual_a thing_n find_v not_o leisure_n to_o run_v out_o after_o those_o poor_a low_a thing_n which_o other_o trifle_v away_o their_o time_n and_o lose_v themselves_o about_o many_o there_o be_v in_o the_o world_n of_o who_o it_o may_v be_v say_v as_o pharaoh_n once_o say_v of_o the_o israelite_n you_o be_v idle_a you_o be_v idle_a who_o be_v very_a idler_n and_o do_v nothing_o at_o all_o in_o spiritual_n by_o reason_n whereof_o their_o heart_n have_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o leisure_n which_o because_o they_o will_v be_v do_v and_o find_v nothing_o to_o take_v too_o they_o busy_a themselves_o just_a as_o child_n and_o boy_n do_v when_o they_o be_v idle_a about_o this_o toy_n and_o the_o other_o such_o a_o querk_n and_o such_o a_o query_n their_o time_n and_o thought_n be_v busy_v about_o and_o they_o be_v continual_o fancy_v and_o invent_v new_a notion_n and_o chimera_n and_o this_o bear_v the_o bell_n and_o be_v all_o in_o request_n to_o day_n and_o this_o to_o morrow_n and_o thus_o they_o strange_o lose_v themselves_o run_v from_o one_o fancy_n unto_o another_o till_o in_o the_o end_n they_o have_v outrun_v reason_n religion_n and_o all_o whereas_o now_o a_o saint_n which_o have_v his_o heart_n exercise_v about_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v like_o a_o man_n which_o be_v in_o great_a deal_n and_o trade_n which_o have_v many_o weighty_a affair_n under_o his_o hand_n together_o and_o be_v by_o reason_n hereof_o so_o full_a of_o employment_n that_o he_o can_v find_v time_n to_o beat_v his_o brain_n about_o this_o querk_n and_o the_o other_o query_n all_o the_o time_n that_o he_o have_v be_v little_a enough_o and_o too_o little_a to_o follow_v so_o as_o that_o he_o may_v not_o be_v a_o loose_a of_o his_o great_a employment_n he_o find_v that_o have_v he_o two_o day_n whereas_o he_o have_v but_o one_o time_n will_v be_v too_o little_a for_o he_o to_o busy_v himself_o how_o he_o may_v enjoy_v more_o communion_n with_o god_n understand_v more_o of_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o godliness_n get_v his_o heart_n more_o mortify_v his_o grace_n more_o quicken_v etc._n etc._n though_o he_o shall_v allow_v other_o thing_n no_o time_n at_o all_o because_o to_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v exercise_v about_o spiritual_a thing_n other_o thing_n be_v dry_a and_o empty_a such_o a_o heart_n neither_o find_v relish_n in_o they_o nor_o satisfaction_n from_o they_o a_o spiritual_a heart_n delight_v in_o thing_n and_o relish_v they_o as_o they_o be_v spiritual_a that_o which_o much_o relish_v a_o carnal_a heart_n be_v very_o dis-relishing_a to_o the_o spiritual_a man_n as_o take_v a_o carnal_a ear_n that_o love_v to_o hear_v thing_n where_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o curiosity_n and_o of_o the_o varnish_n of_o humane_a wit_n and_o wisdom_n but_o now_o take_v a_o spiritual_a ear_n that_o delight_v to_o hear_v such_o thing_n as_o have_v in_o they_o evidence_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n and_o find_v a_o dis-relishing_a of_o other_o thing_n so_o take_v a_o carnal_a eye_n that_o delight_v to_o behold_v such_o thing_n as_o please_v the_o natural_a sense_n and_o delight_v the_o fancy_n but_o now_o a_o spiritual_a soul_n that_o delight_v to_o behold_v such_o thing_n as_o may_v elevate_v the_o soul_n and_o raise_v the_o affection_n more_o towards_o heaven_n so_o take_v a_o carnal_a heart_n that_o be_v well_o please_v when_o it_o be_v exercise_v about_o toy_n this_o vain_a needless_a question_n and_o the_o other_o but_o now_o a_o spiritual_a heart_n that_o can_v take_v no_o comfortable_a relish_n in_o thing_n of_o this_o nature_n but_o they_o be_v dry_a and_o empty_a unto_o it_o and_o therefore_o it_o shun_v and_o avoyd_v they_o and_o so_o escape_v the_o danger_n that_o come_v by_o they_o 3_o because_o such_o a_o heart_n as_o be_v exercise_v in_o and_o take_v up_o with_o spiritual_a thing_n life_n as_o i_o may_v say_v in_o another_o world_n whither_o these_o vapour_n which_o make_v the_o brain_n of_o many_o man_n giddy_a and_o their_o conversation_n unsteadfast_a do_v not_o ascend_v he_o live_v in_o the_o heavenly_a world_n and_o be_v
remedy_n get_v thy_o heart_n exercise_v in_o and_o take_v up_o with_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o need_v say_v no_o more_o by_o way_n of_o motive_n than_o to_o repeat_v over_o the_o doctrine_n viz._n that_o the_o way_n for_o a_o saint_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o error_n and_o evil_n of_o the_o time_n he_o live_v in_o be_v to_o have_v his_o heart_n as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v take_v up_o with_o and_o his_o spirit_n exercise_v about_o high_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n yet_o because_o our_o heart_n be_v so_o dull_a of_o hear_v that_o a_o great_a deal_n say_v move_v they_o but_o a_o little_a i_o shall_v therefore_o beside_o the_o doctrine_n lay_v some_o few_o other_o motive_n before_o you_o to_o stir_v up_o to_o this_o to_o have_v our_o heart_n more_o exercise_v in_o and_o take_v up_o with_o spiritual_a thing_n 1_o consider_v this_o be_v the_o way_n a_o special_a way_n to_o maintain_v peace_n in_o thy_o own_o soul_n be_v a_o man_n abode_n in_o the_o upper_a region_n of_o the_o air_n he_o shall_v neither_o be_v trouble_v with_o storm_n or_o clouding_n because_o he_o shall_v be_v above_o all_o so_o soul_n be_v thy_o heart_n and_o mind_n always_o take_v up_o with_o spiritual_a thing_n in_o a_o spiritual_a manner_n we_o shall_v be_v more_o free_a from_o storm_n within_o more_o free_a from_o the_o clouding_n of_o god_n face_n than_o now_o we_o be_v we_o shall_v have_v more_o inward_a calm_a and_o sunshine_n of_o god_n love_n in_o a_o day_n than_o now_o perhaps_o we_o have_v in_o a_o month_n 2_o this_o also_o be_v the_o way_n to_o end_v division_n among_o saint_n the_o way_n to_o cure_v a_o disease_n be_v to_o take_v away_o the_o cause_n what_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o division_n among_o saint_n but_o the_o not_o exercise_v of_o our_o heart_n about_o spiritual_a thing_n the_o root_n of_o our_o division_n be_v our_o carnality_n 1_o cor._n 3.3_o 4._o for_o you_o be_v yet_o carnal_a for_o whereas_o there_o be_v among_o you_o envy_v and_o strife_n and_o division_n be_v you_o not_o carnal_a and_o walk_v as_o man_n for_o while_o one_o say_v i_o be_o of_o paul_n and_o another_o i_o be_o of_o apollo_n be_v you_o not_o carnal_a when_o christian_n who_o shall_v be_v one_o divide_v themselves_o and_o make_v party_n one_o party_n set_v themselves_o might_n and_o main_a against_o the_o other_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n that_o they_o be_v carnal_a but_o now_o as_o saint_n come_v to_o be_v more_o spiritual_a and_o more_o take_v up_o with_o spiritual_a thing_n they_o come_v to_o see_v their_o own_o folly_n and_o childishness_n in_o these_o thing_n they_o come_v to_o look_v upon_o and_o have_v fellowship_n with_o saint_n as_o they_o be_v saint_n as_o they_o have_v the_o image_n of_o god_n upon_o they_o christ_n in_o they_o the_o spiritual_a christian_a love_n what_o god_n love_v and_o where_o god_n love_v now_o god_n love_v his_o own_o image_n in_o all_o and_o all_o as_o they_o have_v this_o image_n upon_o they_o thus_o the_o spiritual_a christian_a who_o be_v take_v up_o with_o spiritual_a thing_n love_n and_o have_v fellowship_n with_o saint_n as_o they_o be_v saint_n whoever_o they_o be_v which_o he_o see_v to_o be_v such_o if_o there_o be_v not_o some_o eminent_a blot_n either_o upon_o their_o conversation_n or_o judgement_n which_o after_o admonition_n remain_v so_o as_o that_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n and_o the_o honour_n of_o the_o gospel_n call_v aloud_o for_o withdraw_a communion_n from_o they_o he_o dare_v not_o but_o to_o love_v they_o own_z they_o and_o have_v fellowship_n with_o they_o as_o god_n do_v and_o as_o he_o himself_o hereafter_o in_o heaven_n shall_v do_v now_o this_o exceed_o heal_v and_o make_v up_o breach_n among_o the_o saint_n 3_o the_o exercise_v of_o the_o heart_n about_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v the_o way_n to_o dis-enamour_a a_o man_n heart_n of_o the_o world_n the_o way_n to_o dis-enamour_a a_o man_n of_o a_o base_a and_o vulgar_a person_n be_v to_o have_v his_o heart_n enamour_v with_o a_o person_n of_o great_a worth_n and_o excellency_n so_o the_o way_n to_o dis-enamour_a our_o heart_n of_o low_a carnal_a and_o earthly_a thing_n be_v to_o have_v they_o enamour_v with_o high_a spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a thing_n paul_n say_v col._n 3.1_o if_o you_o be_v rise_v with_o christ_n seek_v thing_n above_o where_o christ_n sit_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n christ_n sit_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n be_v a_o motive_n to_o we_o to_o seek_v thing_n above_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v will_v you_o have_v your_o heart_n spiritual_a be_v much_o in_o cogitation_n of_o this_o christ_n be_v above_o he_o be_v at_o the_o right_a hand_n of_o god_n and_o say_v what_o be_v my_o head_n above_o my_o husband_n above_o my_o saviour_n my_o all_o above_o and_o shall_v i_o mind_v thing_n here_o below_o o_o christian_n be_v you_o busy_v in_o spiritual_a thing_n you_o will_v be_v less_o busy_a with_o the_o world_n be_v your_o heart_n and_o thought_n more_o take_v up_o about_o your_o union_n with_o christ_n your_o justification_n your_o inheritance_n you_o be_v call_v to_o etc._n etc._n you_o will_v not_o root_v in_o the_o world_n as_o you_o do_v mole_n root_v themselves_o in_o the_o earth_n but_o bird_n do_v not_o because_o they_o fly_v aloft_o they_o be_v much_o above_o and_o take_v no_o delight_n to_o root_v in_o the_o earth_n be_v as_o the_o bird_n the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n whilst_o iron_n be_v hot_a it_o be_v easy_a to_o beat_v it_o into_o this_o or_o that_o form_n but_o when_o it_o be_v cold_a it_o will_v not_o work_v and_o so_o nothing_o will_v be_v do_v whilst_o the_o heart_n be_v warm_v with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n it_o be_v easy_a to_o bring_v it_o to_o this_o as_o that_o spiritual_a work_n but_o when_o it_o be_v cold_a and_o dead_a it_o will_v not_o work_v 7_o watch_v all_o opportunity_n that_o offer_v themselves_o to_o thou_o whereby_o thou_o may_v increase_v thy_o delight_n in_o spiritual_a thing_n or_o have_v thy_o heart_n more_o warm_v to_o thing_n of_o this_o nature_n sometime_o a_o christian_a have_v a_o opportunity_n offer_v to_o speak_v a_o spiritual_a word_n to_o some_o or_o do_v some_o spiritual_a he_o be_v in_o continual_a fear_n and_o therefore_o whensoever_o he_o find_v the_o motion_n of_o sin_n or_o temptation_n to_o sin_n stir_v in_o himself_o he_o present_o grow_v weak_a and_o faint_a
