truth_n with_o constancy_n courage_n and_o joy_n 3._o there_o be_v also_o singular_a eminency_n of_o grace_n which_o some_o diligent_a careful_a and_o choice_a servant_n of_o god_n attain_v unto_o far_o above_o what_o the_o ordinary_a sort_n arrive_v at_o enoch_n have_v his_o conversation_n so_o much_o in_o heaven_n that_o he_o be_v say_v to_o walk_v with_o god_n david_n soul_n be_v often_o full_a of_o delight_n in_o god_n some_o in_o the_o height_n of_o assurance_n rejoice_v in_o god_n with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o full_a of_o glory_n moses_n be_v eminent_a in_o meekness_n job_n in_o patience_n the_o apostle_n paul_n in_o zeal_n for_o promote_a the_o gospel_n etc._n etc._n now_o satan_n when_o he_o come_v to_o question_v the_o grace_n of_o man_n he_o present_v they_o with_o these_o measure_n and_o if_o they_o fall_v short_a as_o ordinary_o they_o do_v he_o conclude_v they_o altogether_o graceless_a 2._o satan_n also_o can_v do_v much_o to_o heighten_v the_o ordinary_a work_n and_o usual_a fruit_n of_o every_o grace_n his_o art_n herein_o lie_v in_o two_o thing_n 1._o he_o give_v we_o a_o description_n of_o grace_n as_o it_o be_v in_o itself_o abstract_v from_o the_o weakness_n dulness_n distraction_n and_o infirmity_n that_o be_v concomitant_a with_o it_o as_o it_o come_v forth_o to_o practice_n he_o bring_v to_o our_o view_n grace_n in_o its_o glory_n and_o without_o the_o spot_n by_o which_o our_o weakness_n and_o satan_n temptation_n do_v much_o disfigure_v it_o 2._o he_o present_v we_o with_o grace_n in_o its_o whole_a body_n complete_v with_o all_o its_o member_n faith_n love_n hope_v patience_n meekness_n gentleness_n etc._n etc._n from_o both_o these_o he_o set_v before_o those_o who_o he_o intend_v to_o discourage_v a_o complete_a copy_n of_o a_o exact_a holy_a christian_a as_o if_o every_o true_a christian_a be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o constant_a practice_n of_o all_o these_o grace_n at_o all_o time_n on_o all_o occasion_n and_o that_o without_o weakness_n or_o infirmity_n whereas_o indeed_o a_o true_a christian_a may_v be_v find_v sometime_o evident_o practise_v one_o grace_n and_o weak_a or_o at_o present_a defective_a in_o another_o and_o sometime_o the_o best_a of_o his_o grace_n be_v so_o interrupt_v with_o temptation_n so_o clog_v with_o infirmity_n that_o its_o work_n be_v scarce_o discernible_a 3._o he_o have_v a_o policy_n in_o heighten_v those_o attainment_n and_o work_n of_o soul_n in_o thing_n relate_v to_o god_n and_o religion_n which_o be_v to_o be_v find_v in_o temporary_a believer_n which_o because_o they_o sometime_o appear_v in_o the_o unconvert_v as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o convert_v though_o all_o unconverted_a man_n have_v they_o not_o be_v therefore_o call_v common_a grace_n this_o he_o do_v that_o he_o may_v from_o thence_o take_v occasion_n to_o disprove_v the_o real_a grace_n of_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n of_o who_o better_a thing_n and_o thing_n that_o accompany_v salvation_n that_o be_v special_a save_a grace_n be_v to_o be_v expect_v heb._n 6._o 9_o his_o way_n herein_o be_v 1._o to_o show_v the_o utmost_a bravery_n of_o these_o common_a grace_n how_o much_o man_n may_v have_v how_o far_o they_o may_v go_v and_o yet_o at_o last_o come_v to_o nothing_o for_o gift_n they_o may_v have_v powerful_a eloquence_n prophecy_n understand_v of_o mystery_n faith_n of_o miracle_n for_o good_a work_n they_o may_v give_v their_o estate_n to_o relieve_v the_o poor_a in_o moral_a virtue_n they_o may_v be_v excellent_a their_o illumination_n may_v be_v great_a they_o may_v taste_v the_o good_a word_n of_o god_n and_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v heb._n 6._o 4._o their_o conversation_n may_v be_v without_o offence_n and_o their_o conscience_n honest_a as_o paul_n be_v before_o his_o conversion_n 2._o with_o these_o height_n of_o common_a grace_n he_o compare_v the_o low_a degree_n of_o special_a grace_n and_o because_o the_o principle_n motive_n and_o end_n which_o constitute_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o be_v as_o it_o be_v underground_o more_o remote_a from_o sense_n and_o observation_n and_o oftentimes_o darken_v by_o temptation_n he_o take_v the_o boldness_n to_o deny_v the_o truth_n of_o grace_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o small_a inconsiderable_a appearance_n that_o it_o make_v confident_o affirm_v that_o special_a grace_n must_v of_o necessity_n make_v a_o far_o great_a outward_a show_n than_o these_o common_a grace_n in_o what_o manner_n and_o to_o what_o end_n satan_n do_v heighten_v grace_n in_o the_o abstract_n we_o have_v see_v it_o remain_v that_o we_o discover_v 2._o how_o he_o do_v lessen_v grace_n in_o the_o concrete_a this_o be_v the_o centre_n of_o his_o design_n he_o will_v not_o extol_v grace_n so_o much_o but_o that_o he_o hope_v thereby_o to_o condemn_v the_o generation_n of_o the_o just_a and_o to_o make_v it_o appear_v that_o there_o be_v few_o or_o none_o that_o be_v true_o gracious_a when_o he_o come_v to_o apply_v all_o this_o to_o the_o condition_n of_o any_o child_n of_o god_n he_o deal_v treacherous_o and_o his_o cunning_n consist_v of_o three_o part_n 1._o he_o compare_v the_o present_a state_n of_o any_o one_o with_o who_o he_o deal_v to_o the_o high_a attainment_n and_o excellency_n of_o grace_n allow_v nothing_o to_o be_v grace_n but_o what_o will_v answer_v these_o description_n he_o have_v already_o give_v here_o the_o tempter_n do_v apparent_o make_v use_n of_o a_o false_a balance_n and_o a_o bag_n of_o deceitful_a weight_n for_o thus_o he_o put_v they_o to_o it_o thou_o say_v thou_o have_v grace_n but_o thou_o do_v altogether_o deceive_v thyself_o for_o indeed_o thou_o have_v none_o at_o all_o compare_v thyself_o with_o other_o that_o be_v in_o scripture_n note_v as_o undoubted_o gracious_a and_o thou_o will_v see_v that_o in_o the_o balance_n thou_o be_v light_a than_o vanity_n abraham_n have_v faith_n but_o he_o believe_v above_o hope_n moses_n and_o paul_n have_v love_n but_o they_o manifest_v it_o by_o prefer_v their_o brethren_n happiness_n before_o their_o own_o david_n be_v a_o saint_n but_o he_o have_v a_o heart_n ravish_v with_o god_n the_o martyr_n speak_v of_o in_o heb._n 11._o they_o can_v do_v wonder_n they_o be_v above_o fear_n of_o man_n above_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n they_o love_v not_o their_o life_n to_o the_o death_n how_o joyful_o take_v they_o the_o spoil_n of_o their_o good_n how_o courageous_o do_v they_o suffer_v the_o sharp_a torment_n beside_o say_v he_o all_o the_o child_n of_o god_n be_v describe_v be_v sanctify_v throughout_o abound_v with_o all_o fruit_n of_o righteousness_n their_o faith_n be_v work_v their_o love_n still_o laborious_a their_o hope_n patience_n the_o little_a that_o thou_o do_v for_o god_n or_o especial_o will_v do_v if_o it_o be_v not_o for_o thy_o own_o advantage_n may_v convince_v thou_o that_o thou_o have_v no_o love_n to_o remember_v one_o that_o be_v long_o rack_v with_o that_o of_o rev._n 21._o 8._o the_o fearful_a and_o unbelieving_a etc._n etc._n shall_v have_v their_o part_n in_o the_o lake_n which_o burn_v with_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n from_o whence_o the_o party_n thus_o argue_v the_o proposion_n be_v true_a because_o it_o be_v scripture_n and_o i_o can_v deny_v the_o assumption_n fearful_a i_o be_o because_o i_o be_o doubtful_a of_o salvation_n and_o unbelieving_a i_o be_o for_o i_o can_v believe_v that_o i_o be_o regenerate_v or_o in_o a_o state_n of_o grace_n and_o therefore_o i_o can_v avoid_v the_o conclusion_n to_o the_o same_o purpose_n he_o dispute_v against_o some_o from_o 1_o john_n 4._o 18._o there_o be_v no_o fear_n in_o love_n but_o perfect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n but_o thou_o be_v full_a of_o fear_n therefore_o thou_o love_v not_o god_n sometime_o he_o make_v use_v of_o those_o scripture_n that_o make_v the_o prevail_a degree_n of_o our_o love_n and_o respect_n to_o god_n above_o the_o world_n and_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o life_n to_o be_v the_o character_n of_o true_a grace_n as_o that_o of_o john_n if_o any_o man_n love_v the_o world_n the_o love_n of_o the_o father_n be_v not_o in_o he_o and_o that_o of_o christ_n if_o a_o man_n love_v any_o thing_n more_o than_o i_o he_o be_v not_o worthy_a of_o i_o he_o that_o forsake_v not_o all_o for_o i_o can_v be_v my_o disciple_n etc._n etc._n then_o he_o urge_v upon_o they_o their_o love_n of_o the_o world_n and_o unwillingness_n to_o part_v with_o their_o estate_n and_o so_o bring_v the_o conclusion_n upon_o they_o instance_n may_v be_v infinite_a but_o by_o these_o you_o may_v judge_v of_o the_o rest_n let_v we_o now_o cast_v our_o eye_n upon_o his_o subtlety_n in_o manage_v his_o argument_n against_o man_n 1._o he_o ground_n his_o argument_n on_o scripture_n because_o that_o have_v authority_n with_o it_o and_o the_o very_a trouble_a conscience_n have_v a_o reverence_n to_o it_o 2._o he_o always_o suit_v his_o scripture_n which_o he_o thus_o cite_v to_o that_o wherein_o the_o conscience_n be_v most_o tender_a if_o there_o be_v any_o thing_n that_o afford_v matter_n of_o suspicion_n or_o fear_v he_o will_v be_v sure_a to_o choose_v such_o a_o arrow_n out_o of_o the_o quiver_n of_o scripture_n as_o will_v direct_o hit_v the_o mark_n 3._o though_o in_o the_o citation_n of_o scripture_n he_o always_o urge_v a_o sense_n which_o the_o holy_a ghost_n never_o intend_v yet_o there_o will_v be_v always_o something_o in_o those_o scripture_n which_o he_o make_v use_v of_o which_o in_o word_n at_o least_o seem_v to_o favour_v his_o conclusion_n as_o appear_v in_o the_o instance_n now_o give_v for_o when_o he_o will_v conclude_v a_o man_n not_o to_o be_v a_o child_n of_o god_n because_o of_o his_o ignorance_n something_o of_o his_o argument_n be_v true_a it_o may_v be_v the_o man_n be_v sensible_a that_o his_o knowledge_n be_v but_o little_a compare_v with_o the_o measure_n which_o some_o other_o have_v or_o that_o he_o be_v at_o a_o loss_n or_o confuse_v in_o many_o doctrinal_a point_n of_o religion_n or_o have_v but_o little_a experience_n in_o many_o practical_a case_n etc._n etc._n this_o as_o it_o be_v true_a so_o be_v it_o his_o trouble_n and_o whilst_o he_o be_v pore_v upon_o his_o defect_n satan_n clap_v a_o arrest_n upon_o he_o of_o a_o far_o great_a debt_n than_o god_n charge_v upon_o he_o and_o from_o scripture_n that_o speak_v of_o a_o total_a ignorance_n of_o the_o fundamental_o of_o religion_n as_o that_o there_o be_v a_o god_n that_o christ_n jesus_n be_v god_n and_o man_n the_o redeemer_n of_o mankind_n by_o a_o satisfaction_n to_o divine_a justice_n etc._n etc._n or_o of_o a_o wilful_a ignorance_n of_o the_o worth_n of_o the_o proffer_n of_o the_o gospel_n or_o its_o reality_n which_o be_v discover_v in_o the_o refusal_n of_o the_o term_n thereof_o he_o conclude_v he_o to_o be_v in_o a_o state_n of_o darkness_n whereas_o the_o ignorance_n which_o the_o man_n complain_v of_o be_v not_o the_o ignorance_n which_o those_o scripture_n intend_v so_o in_o the_o next_o instance_n the_o sin_n which_o a_o child_n of_o god_n complain_v of_o be_v those_o of_o daily_a incursion_n which_o he_o labour_v and_o strive_v against_o but_o that_o commit_v sin_n mention_v in_o the_o text_n have_v respect_n to_o the_o gnostic_n who_o teach_v a_o liberty_n in_o sin_v and_o fancy_v a_o righteousness_n consistant_fw-la with_o the_o avow_a practice_n of_o iniquity_n hence_o do_v john_n 1_o john_n 3._o 7._o direct_o face_n their_o opinion_n in_o these_o term_n little_a child_n let_v no_o man_n deceive_v you_o he_o that_o do_v righteousness_n be_v righteous_a and_o he_o that_o be_v bear_v of_o god_n neither_o do_v nor_o can_v avouch_v a_o liberty_n of_o sin_v it_o be_v contrary_a to_o the_o principle_n of_o the_o new_a nature_n so_o that_o the_o miscarriage_n of_o infirmity_n which_o the_o child_n of_o god_n lament_v in_o himself_o be_v not_o the_o same_o with_o that_o of_o the_o text_n upon_o which_o satan_n ground_n the_o accusation_n the_o like_a may_v be_v say_v of_o the_o three_o instance_n from_o rev._n 21._o 18._o the_o threaten_v there_o be_v against_o such_o a_o fear_n to_o lose_v the_o comfort_n of_o the_o world_n that_o they_o dare_v not_o believe_v the_o gospel_n to_o be_v true_a and_o accept_v it_o according_o which_o be_v nothing_o to_o those_o fear_n and_o doubt_n that_o may_v be_v in_o a_o child_n of_o god_n in_o reference_n to_o his_o happiness_n thus_o in_o all_o the_o rest_n the_o fallacy_n lie_v in_o misapply_v the_o scripture_n to_o suit_v they_o to_o that_o wherein_o the_o conscience_n be_v tender_a under_o a_o sense_n which_o be_v never_o intend_v by_o they_o yet_o in_o another_o sense_n the_o thing_n charge_v upon_o the_o conscience_n be_v true_a 4._o yet_o be_v satan_n so_o subtle_a that_o when_o he_o dispute_v by_o such_o fallacious_a argument_n he_o chief_o endeavour_v to_o draw_v off_o the_o defendant_n eye_n and_o consideration_n from_o that_o part_n of_o the_o argument_n wherein_o its_o weakness_n lie_v which_o in_o this_o case_n be_v always_o in_o the_o abuse_n of_o the_o scripture_n to_o a_o wrong_a sense_n this_o he_o do_v partly_o from_o the_o advantage_n which_o he_o have_v from_o the_o reverence_n that_o they_o carry_v to_o scripture_n they_o believe_v it_o to_o be_v true_a and_o be_v not_o willing_a to_o suspect_v the_o sense_n and_o many_o be_v so_o weak_a that_o if_o they_o shall_v satan_n be_v so_o cunning_a that_o he_o can_v easy_o baffle_v they_o in_o any_o distinction_n that_o they_o can_v make_v and_o partly_o from_o the_o sense_n they_o have_v of_o that_o whereof_o they_o be_v accuse_v they_o feel_v themselves_o so_o sore_o in_o that_o place_n and_o for_o that_o very_a end_n do_v satan_n direct_v his_o scripture_n to_o hit_v it_o that_o they_o ready_o take_v it_o for_o grant_v that_o the_o hinge_n of_o the_o controversy_n turn_v upon_o it_o and_o that_o the_o whole_a dispute_n rest_v upon_o it_o now_o satan_n have_v these_o fair_a advantage_n by_o a_o further_a improvement_n of_o they_o hide_v the_o weakness_n of_o his_o argument_n for_o 1._o he_o take_v that_o sense_n of_o the_o scripture_n in_o which_o he_o misapply_v it_o for_o grant_v and_o that_o with_o great_a confidence_n make_v as_o if_o there_o be_v no_o doubt_n there_o 2._o he_o turn_v always_o that_o part_n of_o the_o argument_n to_o they_o which_o they_o can_v least_o answer_v press_v they_o eager_o with_o the_o matter_n of_o charge_n which_o they_o be_v as_o ready_a to_o confess_v as_o he_o be_v to_o accuse_v they_o of_o and_o aggravate_v it_o very_o busy_o and_o because_o the_o unskilful_a have_v no_o other_o direction_n for_o the_o find_v the_o knot_n of_o the_o controversy_n than_o satan_n bustle_n though_o he_o like_o the_o lapwing_n make_v the_o great_a noise_n when_o he_o be_v further_a from_o his_o nest_n on_o purpose_n to_o draw_v they_o into_o a_o great_a mistake_n they_o look_v no_o further_o and_o then_o not_o be_v able_a to_o answer_v they_o be_v soon_o cast_v and_o strike_v in_o with_o the_o conclusion_n against_o themselves_o they_o multiply_v their_o sorrow_n and_o
mean_n of_o temptation_n to_o qualify_v he_o with_o pity_n and_o power_n to_o help_v for_o in_o that_o he_o suffer_v be_v tempt_v he_o be_v able_a to_o succour_v they_o that_o be_v tempt_v heb._n 2._o 18._o and_o have_v experience_n of_o temptation_n himself_o be_v become_v a_o merciful_a highpriest_n 15._o apt_a to_o be_v touch_v with_o the_o feel_n of_o our_o infirmity_n four_o the_o subtlety_n his_o impudence_n of_o the_o usual_a temptation_n which_o we_o may_v expect_v as_o also_o to_o teach_v we_o what_o weapon_n be_v necessary_a for_o resistance_n and_o in_o what_o manner_n we_o must_v manage_v they_o second_o it_o seem_v as_o strange_a that_o satan_n will_v undertake_v a_o thing_n so_o unfeasible_a and_o hopeless_a as_o the_o tempt_a of_o christ_n what_o expectation_n can_v he_o have_v to_o prevail_v against_o he_o who_o be_v anoint_v with_o the_o oil_n of_o gladness_n above_o his_o fellow_n some_o answer_n first_o that_o satan_n may_v possible_o doubt_v whether_o christ_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n or_o no._n but_o the_o improbability_n of_o this_o i_o shall_v speak_v of_o afterward_o second_o other_o attribute_v it_o to_o his_o malice_n which_o indeed_o be_v great_a and_o may_v possible_o blind_v he_o to_o a_o desperate_a undertake_n but_o three_o we_o may_v just_o apprehend_v the_o power_n of_o sin_n over_o satan_n to_o be_v so_o great_a that_o it_o may_v enforce_v he_o to_o the_o bold_a attempt_n of_o such_o a_o wickedness_n we_o see_v daily_o that_o wicked_a man_n by_o the_o force_n of_o their_o own_o wicked_a principle_n be_v restles_o hurry_v upon_o act_n of_o sin_n though_o they_o know_v the_o prohibition_n and_o be_v not_o ignorant_a of_o the_o threaten_a danger_n satan_n be_v as_o great_a a_o slave_n to_o his_o own_o internal_a corrupt_a principle_n as_o any_o and_o whatsoever_o blind_a fury_n be_v stir_v up_o in_o man_n by_o the_o power_n of_o his_o lust_n we_o may_v very_o well_o suppose_v the_o like_a in_o satan_n four_o there_o be_v a_o superior_a hand_n upon_o the_o devil_n that_o sway_v limit_n and_o order_v he_o in_o his_o temptation_n he_o can_v tempt_v when_o he_o will_v neither_o always_o what_o he_o will_v but_o in_o his_o own_o curse_a inclination_n and_o the_o act_n of_o they_o he_o be_v force_v to_o be_v subservient_fw-fr to_z god_n design_n and_o in_o this_o particular_a whatever_o may_v be_v satan_n proper_a end_n or_o principle_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o god_n carry_v on_o a_o gracious_a design_n for_o the_o instruction_n and_o comfort_n of_o his_o child_n the_o end_n of_o christ_n go_v to_o the_o wilderness_n be_v that_o he_o may_v be_v tempt_v if_o together_o with_o this_o the_o holiness_n and_o dignity_n of_o christ_n in_o respect_n of_o his_o person_n and_o office_n be_v
