long-impenitent_a sinner_n neglect_v to_o follow_v the_o common_a rule_n of_o holy_a life_n and_o of_o keep_v in_o god_n favour_n which_o he_o have_v give_v i_o in_o his_o word_n shall_v we_o neglect_v the_o express_a condition_n of_o his_o gracious_a promise_n presume_v on_o a_o extraordinary_a thing_n never_o promise_v which_o be_v that_o the_o thing_n promise_v shall_v be_v give_v to_o he_o that_o never_o observe_v the_o condition_n on_o which_o it_o be_v promise_v to_o be_v give_v if_o we_o repent_v when_o we_o be_v call_v to_o it_o and_o continue_v all_o our_o life-long_a in_o a_o state_n of_o repentance_n repent_v always_o of_o our_o sin_n as_o we_o commit_v and_o discover_v they_o and_o endeavour_v as_o much_o as_o we_o can_v to_o avoid_v they_o for_o the_o future_a we_o may_v be_v very_o sure_a of_o mercy_n and_o acceptance_n because_o it_o be_v promise_v to_o all_o that_o do_v so_o but_o this_o i_o most_o confident_o say_v that_o he_o who_o be_v call_v often_o to_o repentance_n wilful_o delay_v it_o from_o time_n to_o time_n think_v it_o always_o soon_o enough_o to_o leave_v off_o sin_v hereafter_o and_o to_o serve_v god_n towards_o the_o end_n of_o his_o life_n and_o that_o his_o repentance_n will_v come_v time_n enough_o then_o to_o find_v acceptance_n reckon_v as_o we_o say_v without_o his_o host_n and_o presume_v on_o that_o which_o he_o can_v find_v that_o god_n have_v promise_v he_o and_o therefore_o have_v cause_n enough_o to_o fear_v that_o his_o repentance_n may_v come_v too_o late_o and_o it_o will_v not_o prove_v the_o repentance_n which_o god_n make_v the_o condition_n of_o his_o promise_n especial_o when_o he_o consider_v withal_o how_o god_n have_v express_v his_o dislike_n of_o all_o delay_n and_o what_o severe_a thing_n he_o have_v say_v against_o the_o delay_a sinner_n in_o his_o word_n be_v it_o not_o strange_a that_o one_o who_o see_v that_o there_o be_v no_o promise_n of_o salvation_n but_o to_o the_o penitent_a liver_n and_o hear_v many_o threaten_n denounce_v against_o such_o as_o delay_v to_o accept_v of_o the_o invitation_n of_o god_n to_o repentance_n shall_v yet_o be_v confident_a that_o after_o he_o have_v by_o his_o wilful_a delay_n declare_v as_o much_o as_o a_o man_n can_v do_v without_o say_v it_o with_o his_o mouth_n that_o he_o have_v no_o mind_n at_o all_o to_o serve_v god_n but_o account_v any_o little_a portion_n of_o his_o time_n not_o know_v how_o short_a it_o will_v prove_v enough_o if_o not_o too_o much_o for_o he_o he_o shall_v yet_o be_v accept_v of_o god_n at_o last_o and_o reward_v by_o he_o too_o he_o hold_v out_o as_o long_o as_o he_o can_v against_o god_n and_o yet_o hope_n that_o god_n will_v ready_o grant_v he_o his_o own_o term_n when_o he_o can_v hold_v out_o no_o long_o i_o will_v to_o god_n we_o can_v be_v persuade_v to_o consider_v a_o little_a impartial_o with_o ourselves_o what_o kind_n of_o thing_n such_o a_o late_a repentance_n after_o long_a and_o wilful_a delay_n be_v like_a to_o prove_v especial_o when_o it_o have_v be_v delay_v till_o our_o last_o sickness_n and_o we_o begin_v to_o fear_v we_o have_v but_o some_o few_o day_n or_o week_n at_o most_o when_o we_o will_v by_o no_o mean_n be_v persuade_v to_o repent_v so_o long_o as_o we_o see_v it_o probable_a we_o may_v live_v some_o year_n long_o how_o be_v it_o imaginable_a that_o we_o then_o repent_v upon_o any_o other_o motive_n than_o a_o present_a fear_n of_o speedy_a damnation_n and_o can_v this_o be_v think_v a_o save_a repentance_n god_n great_a love_n and_o kindness_n a_o thousand_o way_n exercise_v towards_o we_o his_o soveregn_n authority_n over_o we_o and_o command_v lay_v upon_o we_o his_o mercy_n and_o bounty_n his_o woo_n and_o beseeching_n his_o invitation_n threaten_n of_o a_o almighty_a and_o most_o righteous_a offend_a god_n against_o impenitent_a sinner_n have_v no_o force_n at_o all_o upon_o we_o so_o long_o as_o we_o have_v either_o youth_n or_o enjoy_v it_o so_o now_o that_o we_o can_v enjoy_v it_o any_o long_o and_o fear_v we_o be_v go_v to_o be_v punish_v for_o it_o though_o we_o love_v it_o as_o well_o as_o ever_o and_o will_v act_v it_o over_o again_o be_v we_o able_a yet_o we_o be_v sorry_a we_o have_v be_v so_o foolish_a as_o to_o bring_v ourselves_o into_o this_o danger_n that_o we_o now_o apprehend_v ourselves_o to_o be_v in_o and_o see_v we_o can_v have_v no_o more_o pleasure_n in_o this_o world_n which_o we_o be_v now_o leave_v much_o against_o our_o will_n yet_o we_o love_v our_o ease_n still_o and_o be_v willing_a to_o do_v what_o we_o can_v to_o escape_v eternal_a pain_n and_o we_o startle_v at_o the_o thought_n of_o go_v impenitent_a as_o we_o have_v always_o be_v to_o meet_v with_o our_o provoke_v judge_n in_o the_o other_o world_n and_o we_o will_v fain_o step_v back_o again_o from_o the_o mouth_n of_o hell_n and_o therefore_o we_o fall_v a_o pray_n and_o beg_v god_n with_o sad_a sigh_n and_o sorrowful_a tear_n either_o to_o pardon_v we_o and_o take_v we_o to_o heaven_n if_o we_o must_v go_v hence_o or_o else_o to_o spare_v we_o awhile_o long_o which_o if_o he_o will_v do_v we_o resolve_v to_o live_v in_o obedience_n to_o his_o law_n as_o long_o as_o we_o live_v be_v not_o most_v malefactor_n thus_o penitent_a after_o a_o severe_a sentence_n be_v give_v and_o they_o see_v no_o remedy_n but_o it_o must_v be_v present_o execute_v upon_o they_o and_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o because_o their_o heart_n be_v change_v but_o because_o they_o be_v terrify_v with_o the_o punishment_n they_o be_v to_o nothing_o of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n or_o goodness_n in_o it_o but_o only_o a_o fear_n of_o judgement_n and_o hell-fire_n no_o change_n at_o all_o of_o our_o affection_n from_o sin_n to_o
consider_v both_o that_o the_o minister_n may_v take_v heed_n that_o he_o go_v not_o beyond_o his_o commission_n in_o comfort_v the_o sick_a and_o that_o we_o may_v all_o learn_v in_o due_a time_n how_o far_o we_o may_v build_v and_o rely_v on_o such_o comfort_n as_o man_n in_o such_o a_o case_n can_v administer_v unto_o we_o and_o therefore_o i_o here_o in_o answer_n to_o it_o say_v these_o thing_n first_o we_o very_o earnest_o exhort_v the_o worst_a of_o sinner_n even_o to_o the_o last_o gasp_n to_o repent_v of_o their_o sin_n because_o though_o we_o can_v assure_v they_o that_o god_n will_v now_o at_o the_o last_o hour_n accept_v of_o their_o late_a repentance_n see_v he_o have_v nowhere_o as_o be_v say_v before_o declare_v that_o he_o will_v and_o though_o by_o reason_n of_o what_o be_v say_v in_o his_o word_n concern_v his_o ordinary_a method_n of_o deal_n with_o sinner_n we_o be_v rather_o afraid_a that_o he_o will_v not_o yet_o we_o do_v not_o know_v the_o depth_n of_o god_n mercy_n nor_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o infinite_a goodness_n nor_o what_o he_o may_v be_v please_v to_o do_v in_o a_o extraordinary_a way_n if_o sinner_n at_o last_o use_v extraordinary_a endeavour_n and_o if_o by_o such_o motive_n and_o argument_n and_o prayer_n as_o we_o can_v use_v god_n seem_v to_o work_v mighty_o on_o the_o spirit_n of_o the_o die_a sinner_n though_o we_o dare_v not_o assure_v he_o of_o the_o life_n which_o god_n have_v not_o promise_v to_o a_o deathbed_n repentance_n and_o therefore_o we_o can_v be_v sure_a that_o he_o will_v give_v it_o yet_o dare_v we_o not_o leave_v he_o to_o despair_v because_o we_o know_v not_o but_o god_n may_v give_v it_o second_o we_o therefore_o exhort_v the_o worst_a of_o die_a sinner_n to_o repentance_n and_o declare_v unto_o they_o the_o gracious_a and_o comfortable_a promise_n which_o god_n in_o christ_n have_v make_v to_o all_o true_a penitent_n because_o god_n have_v command_v we_o to_o preach_v repentance_n unto_o sinner_n without_o exception_n and_o herein_o as_o we_o obey_v so_o we_o imitate_v our_o lord_n and_o master_n jesus_n christ_n who_o cease_v not_o to_o invite_v all_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n or_o to_o promise_v good_a thing_n to_o the_o penitent_a even_o when_o he_o who_o know_v the_o heart_n of_o all_o man_n know_v that_o many_o of_o they_o to_o who_o he_o preach_v will_v never_o repent_v nor_o become_v capable_a of_o the_o good_a thing_n promise_v god_n have_v bid_v we_o exhort_v to_o repentance_n but_o he_o have_v not_o tell_v we_o that_o we_o be_v to_o cease_v from_o exhort_v any_o one_o that_o will_v hear_v we_o so_o long_o as_o he_o live_v we_o can_v therefore_o excuse_v ourselves_o if_o we_o do_v not_o all_o we_o can_v to_o render_v they_o who_o will_v not_o repent_v inexcusable_a it_o will_v not_o be_v safe_a for_o we_o to_o leave_v they_o this_o plea_n that_o they_o want_v any_o mean_n or_o help_v at_o any_o time_n that_o we_o can_v afford_v they_o three_o we_o hold_v on_o to_o exhort_v even_o to_o the_o last_o because_o how_o near_o unto_o death_n soever_o the_o sinner_n may_v seem_v to_o be_v we_o know_v that_o the_o lord_n of_o life_n and_o death_n can_v raise_v he_o up_o again_o and_o we_o know_v not_o but_o he_o may_v do_v so_o and_o let_v he_o live_v yet_o long_o to_o complete_a the_o repentance_n which_o may_v now_o be_v begin_v god_n be_v please_v sometime_o by_o severe_a chastisement_n and_o heavy_a affliction_n to_o awake_a sinner_n to_o repentance_n who_o have_v live_v in_o sin_n secure_o many_o year_n and_o now_o when_o the_o sinner_n see_v himself_o at_o the_o pit_n brink_n and_o hell_n open_v its_o mouth_n to_o swallow_v he_o up_o he_o may_v possible_o think_v it_o fit_a to_o hearken_v to_o counsel_n of_o safety_n though_o no_o more_o can_v be_v say_v but_o possible_o he_o may_v yet_o be_v save_v we_o know_v not_o but_o now_o he_o may_v enter_v upon_o a_o repentance_n which_o though_o it_o will_v do_v he_o no_o good_a shall_v he_o now_o die_v may_v prove_v unto_o salvation_n if_o he_o recover_v and_o live_v to_o bring_v forth_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o which_o god_n be_v yet_o able_a to_o make_v he_o do_v and_o have_v not_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o will_v not_o do_v last_o we_o to_o the_o very_a last_o exhort_v to_o repentance_n and_o mind_n die_v sinner_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n to_o penitent_n because_o that_o whether_o it_o will_v then_o avail_v to_o salvation_n or_o no_o yet_o we_o be_v sure_a enough_o it_o can_v do_v they_o no_o hurt_n it_o be_v certain_o their_o duty_n to_o repent_v and_o we_o to_o exhort_v they_o to_o it_o and_o as_o it_o will_v hurt_v we_o to_o neglect_v our_o duty_n so_o can_v it_o not_o hurt_v they_o to_o be_v mind_v of_o they_o for_o sinner_n to_o be_v make_v sensible_a of_o their_o sin_n and_o of_o this_o aggravation_n of_o they_o that_o they_o have_v despise_v the_o comfort_n and_o promise_n of_o mercy_n to_o the_o penitent_a be_v a_o good_a thing_n whatever_o the_o end_n may_v be_v of_o such_o sinner_n god_n be_v glorify_v by_o man_n be_v bring_v to_o a_o sense_n and_o acknowledgement_n of_o his_o authority_n and_o goodness_n and_o of_o their_o own_o wickedness_n and_o baseness_n by_o their_o confess_v that_o in_o all_o that_o be_v bring_v upon_o they_o he_o be_v righteous_a and_o they_o be_v wicked_a by_o man_n acknowledge_v at_o last_o that_o god_n have_v be_v always_o good_a especial_o in_o his_o great_a patience_n and_o long_a forbearance_n hitherto_o and_o that_o he_o be_v now_o very_o just_a in_o his_o punishment_n for_o our_o obstinacy_n glory_n be_v give_v to_o god_n and_o this_o aught_o to_o be_v do_v and_o if_o this_o will_v not_o qualify_v sinner_n for_o pardon_n and_o salvation_n it_o be_v however_o a_o part_n of_o their_o duty_n and_o may_v for_o aught_o we_o know_v mitigate_v the_o severity_n of_o their_o sentence_n and_o lessen_v their_o torment_n but_o now_o after_o this_o be_v say_v it_o be_v a_o very_a sad_a thing_n that_o man_n shall_v by_o wilful_a delay_n bring_v themselves_o into_o this_o uncomfortable_a condition_n and_o it_o be_v a_o very_a afflict_a thing_n to_o every_o good_a minister_n of_o christ_n to_o stand_v by_o the_o bedside_n of_o those_o die_a person_n to_o who_o he_o be_v able_a to_o speak_v no_o more_o comfort_n than_o all_o this_o amount_n to_o for_o first_o he_o can_v speak_v no_o comfort_n at_o all_o to_o the_o sick_a person_n but_o upon_o supposition_n that_o he_o be_v what_o he_o find_v too_o much_o cause_n to_o fear_n he_o be_v not_o a_o sincere_a penitent_n and_o this_o be_v very_o sad_a and_o second_o he_o can_v speak_v no_o comfort_n but_o on_o supposition_n of_o such_o a_o repentanee_n as_o the_o sick_a person_n himself_o can_v know_v without_o some_o extraordinary_a mean_n that_o he_o now_o have_v and_o therefore_o can_v tell_v how_o to_o apply_v the_o comfort_n to_o himself_o and_o this_o be_v very_o sad_a again_o the_o sincerity_n of_o one_o repentance_n can_v ordinary_o be_v know_v to_o himself_o but_o by_o the_o fruit_n of_o it_o in_o a_o holy_a life_n and_o by_o these_o he_o that_o be_v now_o die_a can_v never_o know_v it_o it_o be_v only_o such_o a_o repentance_n as_o will_v produce_v holiness_n of_o life_n if_o the_o sick_a person_n shall_v recover_v that_o be_v repentance_n to_o salvation_n and_o when_o the_o sinner_n on_o his_o deathbed_n call_v to_o mind_n how_o often_o his_o heart_n have_v in_o this_o point_n deceive_v he_o when_o he_o remember_v how_o his_o love_n to_o sin_n have_v hitherto_o conquer_v all_o such_o purpose_n and_o resolution_n of_o holy_a live_n how_o often_o he_o have_v heretofore_o upon_o the_o same_o or_o some_o other_o occasion_n very_o serious_o as_o he_o think_v resolve_v as_o now_o he_o do_v and_o yet_o never_o keep_v his_o resolution_n how_o shall_v he_o be_v able_a to_o assure_v himself_o that_o he_o will_v keep_v it_o any_o better_a now_o shall_v he_o yet_o live_v i_o hope_v what_o have_v be_v already_o say_v be_v abundant_o enough_o to_o convince_v we_o all_o both_o that_o a_o sinner_n can_v never_o repent_v too_o soon_o and_o that_o he_o may_v drive_v it_o off_o till_o it_o be_v too_o late_o and_o therefore_o see_v repentance_n be_v altogether_o necessary_a to_o salvation_n it_o be_v a_o work_n that_o require_v great_a haste_n and_o admit_v of_o no_o delay_n the_o conclusion_n from_o what_o we_o have_v now_o prove_v it_o may_v be_v too_o easy_a i_o fear_v for_o many_o of_o we_o to_o reflect_v very_o sad_o upon_o ourselves_o it_o be_v of_o god_n for_o ever_o all_o this_o must_v make_v he_o sensible_a both_o how_o vile_a and_o degenerate_a how_o unworthy_a and_o wretched_a how_o filthy_a and_o how_o miserable_a sin_v against_o god_n have_v make_v he_o and_o how_o be_v fall_v from_o his_o holiness_n and_o obedience_n so_o long_o as_o he_o continue_v in_o this_o sinful_a state_n he_o can_v have_v no_o hope_n ever_o to_o be_v happy_a but_o must_v lie_v under_o the_o wrath_n of_o god_n and_o unless_o he_o be_v renew_v unto_o holiness_n the_o curse_n which_o god_n lay_v on_o sinner_n which_o be_v that_o of_o eternal_a torment_n must_v needs_o fall_v upon_o he_o he_o must_v consider_v the_o admirable_a love_n of_o god_n in_o send_v he_o in_o this_o sinful_a and_o miserable_a state_n a_o saviour_n to_o redeem_v he_o from_o destruction_n by_o the_o sacrifice_n of_o his_o own_o most_o precious_a blood_n and_o to_o invite_v he_o by_o his_o gospel_n to_o repentance_n and_o faith_n and_o to_o promise_v he_o the_o assistance_n of_o his_o holy_a spirit_n of_o grace_n to_o restore_v he_o to_o holiness_n and_o to_o fit_v he_o for_o the_o benefit_n of_o redemption_n the_o pardon_n of_o his_o sin_n and_o eternal_a happiness_n with_o god_n in_o his_o kingdom_n of_o glory_n such_o consideration_n as_o these_o must_v beget_v in_o we_o a_o deep_a and_o humble_a sense_n of_o our_o vileness_n and_o wretchedness_n a_o godly_a sorrow_n for_o behave_v ourselves_o so_o unworthy_o towards_o god_n sink_v much_o below_o the_o dignity_n which_o he_o give_v we_o a_o holy_a shame_n and_o indignation_n against_o ourselves_o
