afterward_o 3_o that_o which_o make_v void_a and_o null_a all_o impeachment_n and_o charge_n whatsoever_o free_v we_o from_o condemnation_n but_o this_o do_v our_o in-being_a in_o christ_n for_o be_v in_o christ_n no_o charge_n or_o impeachment_n can_v be_v draw_v against_o we_o but_o the_o same_o have_v be_v draw_v against_o christ_n in_o our_o stead_n and_o he_o have_v answer_v the_o same_o at_o the_o bar_n of_o god_n justice_n and_o be_v come_v off_o clear_a and_o acquit_v so_o that_o now_o all_o impeachment_n and_o charge_n be_v void_a and_o null_a rom._n 8.33_o 34._o who_o shall_v lay_v the_o root_n as_o a_o tree_n grow_v sometime_o upward_o in_o branch_n sometime_o downward_o in_o root_n so_o thy_o grace_n grow_v sometime_o in_o branch_n as_o in_o love_n humility_z brokenness_n of_o heart_n etc._n etc._n sometime_o in_o root_n as_o when_o thy_o faith_n grow_v more_o and_o root_n itself_o in_o christ_n and_o the_o promise_n more_o now_o how_o be_v it_o with_o thou_o soul_n thou_o do_v not_o grow_v in_o branch_n as_o once_o thou_o do_v that_o be_v thou_o do_v not_o find_v such_o a_o lively_a heart_n

such_o strong_a affection_n such_o a_o flow_a of_o heavenly_a desire_n so_o much_o brokenness_n of_o heart_n love_v to_o the_o brethren_n etc._n etc._n but_o do_v thou_o grow_v in_o the_o root_n do_v thy_o want_n of_o these_o thing_n cause_v thou_o to_o root_v thyself_o more_o in_o the_o free_a promise_n so_o as_o that_o now_o thou_o do_v more_o and_o often_o go_v out_o to_o god_n upon_o the_o account_n of_o the_o general_a promise_n than_o it_o be_v usual_a with_o thou_o to_o do_v when_o thou_o have_v and_o find_v in_o thou_o these_o thing_n then_o soul_n believe_v it_o thou_o do_v grow_v and_o though_o thy_o growth_n be_v not_o so_o much_o to_o sense_n as_o it_o will_v be_v do_v thou_o grow_v more_o in_o the_o branch_n yet_o be_v it_o a_o better_a a_o sure_a growth_n that_o tree_n stand_v fast_o that_o grow_v much_o in_o the_o root_n 2_o thou_o complain_v thou_o do_v not_o grow_v look_v soul_n upon_o thy_o growth_n in_o the_o right_a season_n of_o grow_v there_o be_v a_o season_n of_o grow_v come_v to_o a_o tree_n in_o the_o spring_n or_o summer_n and_o you_o shall_v see_v it_o all_o over_o green_a full_a of_o sap_n leaf_n and_o fruit_n but_o come_v to_o that_o tree_n in_o the_o winter_n and_o you_o see_v none_o of_o all_o this_o but_o the_o tree_n look_v as_o though_o it_o be_v dead_a and_o wither_a why_o so_o the_o spring_n and_o summer_n be_v the_o season_n of_o grow_v but_o the_o winter_n be_v not_o the_o season_n so_o etc._n etc._n 3_o take_v in_o a_o pretty_a distance_n of_o time_n when_o thou_o will_v judge_v of_o thy_o growth_n my_o meaning_n be_v when_o thou_o will_v pass_v a_o judgement_n upon_o thy_o growth_n of_o grace_n whether_o it_o be_v little_a or_o much_o do_v not_o compare_v thyself_o to_o day_n with_o what_o thou_o be_v yesterday_o or_o a_o week_n ago_o but_o take_v in_o some_o year_n and_o then_o thou_o will_v see_v thy_o growth_n better_o in_o nature_n growth_n be_v not_o sudden_o discern_v no_o more_o be_v it_o in_o grace_n take_v a_o live_a child_n it_o grow_v every_o day_n yet_o be_v not_o this_o growth_n discern_v in_o a_o day_n or_o a_o week_n or_o a_o month_n but_o it_o must_v have_v a_o long_a time_n take_v a_o tree_n it_o grow_v daily_o but_o come_v to_o it_o to_o day_n and_o again_o to_o morrow_n you_o see_v no_o growth_n yea_o it_o may_v be_v come_v to_o it_o a_o year_n or_o two_o year_n after_o the_o growth_n be_v hardly_o discernible_a but_o come_v to_o it_o now_o and_o again_o seven_o year_n hence_o you_o will_v see_v growth_n object_n but_o i_o do_v not_o only_o find_v a_o want_n of_o growth_n in_o grace_n but_o i_o clear_o find_v a_o decline_a in_o grace_n both_o in_o root_n and_o branch_n as_o i_o think_v i_o can_v believe_v nor_o have_v confidence_n as_o former_o i_o think_v i_o do_v neither_o be_o i_o so_o humble_a mortify_v self-denying_a as_o once_o i_o think_v i_o be_v and_o therefore_o i_o fear_v i_o have_v no_o in-being_a in_o christ_n answ_n thou_o find_v a_o decline_a in_o grace_n why_o then_o that_o have_v grace_n how_o else_o can_v thou_o decline_v in_o grace_n light_n decrease_v therefore_o there_o be_v light_n how_o can_v it_o decrease_v else_o by_o thy_o own_o confession_n therefore_o thou_o have_v grace_n and_o if_o grace_n then_o in-being_a in_o christ_n 2_o thou_o find_v declining_n in_o grace_n but_o be_v thou_o not_o at_o present_a in_o a_o distemper_n or_o have_v thou_o not_o be_v in_o one_o of_o late_a no_o wonder_v to_o see_v a_o man_n spirit_n and_o strength_n decrease_v when_o there_o be_v some_o feavourish_a distemper_n upon_o he_o or_o that_o have_v be_v late_o upon_o he_o 3_o thou_o find_v declining_n but_o do_v thou_o never_o in_o all_o thy_o life_n time_n find_v declining_n in_o grace_n before_o and_o yet_o find_v also_o that_o grace_n do_v rise_v up_o out_o of_o these_o declining_n with_o advantage_n as_o we_o see_v a_o corn_n of_o wheat_n fall_v to_o the_o ground_n and_o die_v but_o rise_v with_o advantage_n a_o ear_n for_o a_o corn_n so_o when_o thy_o grace_n have_v seem_v to_o be_v dead_a as_o it_o be_v for_o a_o while_n yet_o have_v thou_o not_o at_o last_o see_v it_o sprout_v up_o with_o advantage_n more_o faith_n more_o love_n humility_z mortification_n at_o the_o rise_n of_o grace_n after_o such_o a_o decline_a time_n than_o thou_o see_v in_o thyself_o before_o o_o yes_o say_v the_o soul_n i_o must_v confess_v i_o stinging_n of_o a_o torment_a conscience_n from_o the_o slavery_n of_o the_o devil_n from_o all_o affliction_n as_o legal_a punishment_n for_o sin_n from_o the_o fear_n of_o man_n from_o the_o violence_n of_o the_o creature_n etc._n etc._n o_o bless_a condition_n the_o poor_a grey_a coat_n and_o leather_n coat_n that_o have_v in-being_a in_o christ_n be_v in_o a_o more_o bless_a and_o happy_a condition_n than_o the_o silk_n gown_n the_o plush_n and_o scarlet_a coat_n that_o have_v not_o in-being_a in_o christ_n the_o one_o though_o he_o make_v not_o such_o a_o bravado_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o be_v in_o christ_n heaven_n salvation_n and_o all_o be_v he_o other_o though_o they_o brave_v it_o out_o for_o a_o time_n and_o must_v have_v elbow_n room_n where_o they_o go_v and_o be_v come_v to_o with_o congee_n and_o cap_n in_o the_o hand_n yet_o they_o be_v under_o condemnation_n from_o which_o if_o god_n do_v not_o by_o bring_v they_o home_o to_o himself_o release_v they_o here_o they_o will_v be_v miserable_a in_o hell_n for_o ever_o hereafter_o use_v 2._o this_o cast_v many_o person_n and_o bring_v most_o man_n in_o the_o country_n town_n and_o parish_n of_o the_o world_n under_o condemnation_n why_o they_o have_v not_o in-being_a in_o christ_n 1_o be_v thou_o one_o who_o live_v and_o walk_v in_o profane_a course_n be_v thou_o a_o drunkard_n swearer_n a_o what_o have_v be_v say_v and_o prove_v that_o the_o moral_a law_n remain_v a_o rule_n to_o saint_n in_o gospel-time_n 2_o a_o mistake_n of_o some_o other_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n who_o out_o of_o zeal_n for_o the_o moral_a law_n do_v hand_n over_o head_n urge_v and_o press_v the_o same_o as_o the_o rule_n of_o saint_n never_o consider_v how_o or_o in_o what_o sense_n the_o same_o remain_v a_o rule_n and_o by_o so_o do_v they_o bring_v the_o glorious_a son_n of_o zion_n the_o freeborn_a saint_n of_o the_o gospel_n under_o the_o power_n and_o command_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n ere_o they_o be_v aware_a who_o mistake_n be_v correct_v by_o distinguish_v of_o command_n as_o they_o be_v moses_n and_o christ_n in_o the_o first_o sense_n the_o law_n be_v not_o a_o saint_n rule_n and_o it_o be_v dangerous_a so_o to_o make_v it_o in_o the_o latter_a it_o be_v and_o it_o be_v sweet_a and_o comfortable_a so_o to_o receive_v it_o therefore_o you_o that_o be_v saint_n and_o believer_n hence_o learn_v two_o thing_n i_o not_o to_o reject_v the_o moral_a law_n as_o a_o rule_n to_o order_v your_o life_n and_o conversation_n by_o but_o with_o love_n delight_n and_o cheerfulness_n approve_v of_o embrace_v and_o obey_v the_o same_o 2_o not_o to_o take_v the_o moral_a law_n for_o your_o rule_n as_o it_o come_v out_o of_o moses_n his_o hand_n for_o than_o you_o bring_v yourselves_o under_o the_o power_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n and_o your_o soul_n will_v be_v continual_o fill_v with_o terror_n fear_n and_o tremble_a cover_v over_o with_o darkness_n lie_v can_v he_o look_v satan_n in_o the_o face_n and_o say_v thou_o wretched_a devil_n thou_o will_v tempt_v i_o to_o this_o and_o the_o other_o evil_n to_o grieve_v god_n but_o what_o a_o fool_n be_v thou_o for_o shall_v i_o yield_v unto_o thou_o thy_o end_n will_v never_o be_v accomplish_v for_o thou_o shall_v never_o have_v i_o i_o shall_v never_o perish_v the_o say_v this_o in_o faith_n will_v more_o silence_v the_o tempter_n and_o suppress_v temptation_n than_o can_v be_v do_v in_o any_o other_o way_n this_o therefore_o be_v a_o strong_a motive_n to_o gospel-holiness_n and_o such_o a_o cheerfulness_n and_o delight_n than_o at_o another_o time_n may_v conclude_v that_o his_o obedience_n be_v a_o fruit_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o walk_v after_o the_o gospel_n for_o how_o can_v it_o grieve_v the_o spirit_n and_o loose_v his_o communion_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n let_v a_o saint_n walk_v spiritual_o and_o as_o become_v the_o gospel_n as_o his_o union_n remain_v so_o shall_v his_o communion_n also_o be_v keep_v up_o fresh_a and_o in_o the_o life_n and_o sweetness_n of_o it_o he_o shall_v feel_v the_o same_o in_o his_o own_o soul_n yea_o experience_n tell_v a_o saint_n that_o when_o as_o at_o any_o time_n he_o have_v walk_v as_o a_o obedient_a child_n observe_v and_o do_v with_o delight_n and_o in_o simplicity_n his_o father_n will_n he_o have_v then_o hold_v up_o of_o man_n within_o he_o thus_o god_n come_v forth_o be_v to_o march_v against_o his_o enemy_n in_o the_o behalf_n of_o his_o people_n in_o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o strength_n and_o wisdom_n as_o one_o that_o be_v able_a to_o do_v it_o and_o will_v carry_v the_o day_n and_o to_o the_o end_n that_o all_o his_o adversary_n may_v quake_v and_o tremble_v at_o the_o very_a news_n and_o noise_n of_o such_o a_o enemy_n so_o wonderful_a in_o power_n and_o policy_n come_v against_o they_o but_o you_o will_v say_v what_o do_v god_n do_v now_o he_o be_v up_o why_o as_o he_o arise_v in_o the_o greatness_n of_o his_o power_n and_o wisdom_n so_o be_v up_o he_o do_v great_a and_o wonderful_a thing_n and_o therefore_o at_o the_o very_a beginning_n he_o call_v for_o a_o behold_v from_o his_o people_n vers_fw-la 2._o behold_v denote_v that_o he_o will_v have_v his_o people_n in_o a_o especial_a manner_n to_o attend_v unto_o and_o observe_v the_o thing_n he_o be_v at_o present_a do_v and_o people_n as_o first_o he_o will_v make_v jerusalem_n a_o cup_n of_o tremble_a etc._n etc._n as_o a_o man_n that_o drink_v up_o a_o cup_n of_o poison_n through_o the_o operation_n of_o that_o within_o he_o be_v inward_o fill_v with_o tremble_a the_o natural_a spirit_n and_o vital_n whilst_o they_o be_v in_o combat_n with_o the_o poison_n do_v tremble_v so_o all_o those_o which_o shall_v head_n and_o be_v gather_v together_o against_o god_n judah_n and_o jerusalem_n think_v to_o drink_v up_o jerusalem_n and_o to_o devour_v she_o they_o shall_v find_v jerusalem_n to_o be_v unto_o they_o like_o a_o cup_n of_o poison_n it_o shall_v set_v they_o all_o on_o tremble_v and_o instead_o of_o ruine_v jerusalem_n they_o shall_v be_v ruin_v by_o she_o and_o again_o vers_fw-la 3._o in_o that_o day_n i.e._n in_o the_o last_o day_n as_o i_o shall_v clear_v afterward_o will_v i_o make_v jerusalem_n a_o burdensome_a stone_n as_o a_o man_n that_o offer_v to_o take_v up_o a_o great_a stone_n too_o heavy_a and_o weighty_a by_o far_o for_o he_o to_o bear_v sink_v down_o under_o the_o same_o and_o be_v crush_v to_o piece_n by_o it_o so_o those_o whosoever_o they_o be_v though_o all_o the_o earth_n be_v gather_v together_o which_o shall_v make_v war_n against_o god_n jerusalem_n think_v to_o dispose_v of_o and_o carry_v she_o about_o at_o their_o pleasure_n shall_v find_v she_o to_o be_v so_o weighty_a a_o burden_n that_o they_o shall_v even_o sink_v down_o under_o she_o and_o be_v crush_v in_o piece_n by_o she_o and_o again_o vers_fw-la 3._o i_o will_v smite_v every_o horse_n with_o and_o ever_o upon_o those_o that_o be_v next_o to_o he_o so_o that_o it_o be_v as_o if_o god_n shall_v say_v in_o that_o day_n when_o multitude_n of_o wicked_a man_n and_o the_o enemy_n of_o my_o governor_n of_o judah_n as_o concern_v judah_n enemy_n in_o the_o former_a verse_n and_o what_o be_v it_o why_o this_o the_o governor_n of_o judah_n shall_v say_v in_o their_o heart_n it_o seem_v to_o i_o from_o this_o verse_n and_o likewise_o

time_n of_o the_o law_n god_n give_v his_o spirit_n but_o only_o to_o some_o few_o extraordinary_a man_n as_o prophet_n etc._n etc._n in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o gospel_n god_n pour_v it_o down_o be_v far_o more_o large_a and_o extensive_a than_o the_o expression_n of_o the_o mouth_n be_v or_o can_v be_v and_o which_o may_v be_v a_o matter_n of_o abundant_a comfort_n to_o we_o the_o answer_n of_o god_n be_v not_o according_a to_o the_o expression_n of_o our_o mouth_n but_o the_o desire_n and_o groan_n of_o his_o own_o spirit_n o_o will_v we_o know_v then_o how_o to_o pray_v as_o we_o there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o humility_n in_o many_o a_o man_n by_o nature_n but_o this_o be_v not_o gospel-humility_n and_o there_o be_v too_o a_o natural_a sorrow_n but_o this_o be_v not_o gospel-humiliation_n this_o be_v a_o herb_n that_o grow_v not_o in_o nature_n garden_n any_o other_o humiliation_n save_v gospel-humiliation_n may_v grow_v there_o 2_o it_o do_v not_o arise_v from_o imitation_n of_o other_o the_o example_n of_o other_o some_o thing_n which_o be_v not_o natural_a be_v do_v by_o imitation_n as_o a_o ape_n will_v do_v many_o thing_n by_o imitation_n which_o be_v not_o natural_a but_o this_o do_v arise_v from_o hence_o see_v another_o humble_v and_o imitate_v he_o 3_o it_o do_v not_o arise_v from_o a_o sense_n or_o discern_v of_o sin_n in_o a_o man_n many_o there_o be_v who_o see_v their_o sin_n and_o will_v acknowledge_v the_o same_o natural_a light_a

fail_n in_o one_o thing_n or_o other_o it_o be_v a_o divine_a maxim_n there_o be_v no_o man_n that_o do_v good_a and_o sin_v not_o all_z have_v sin_v and_o come_v short_a of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n enjoy_v much_o inward_a and_o spiritual_a communion_n with_o jesus_n christ_n therefore_o i_o do_v not_o oppose_v spiritual_a thing_n to_o all_o thing_n external_a neither_o will_v i_o be_v so_o understand_v for_o though_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n do_v not_o consist_v in_o meat_n and_o drink_n yet_o meat_n and_o drink_n be_v useful_a in_o their_o place_n and_o man_n in_o a_o ordinary_a old_a truth_n and_o spiritual_a heart_n matter_n these_o be_v fetch_v by_o and_o it_o must_v be_v some_o fine_a new_a tickle_a question_n that_o be_v fit_a matter_n only_o for_o their_o thought_n and_o meditation_n and_o as_o for_o all_o thing_n else_o they_o account_v they_o but_o low_a thing_n and_o those_o that_o hold_v they_o and_o press_v they_o man_n of_o low_a light_n and_o of_o a_o low_a form_n as_o they_o say_v i_o be_o almost_o confident_a of_o if_o that_o most_o of_o the_o error_n this_o day_n broach_v or_o on_o foot_n in_o england_n or_o elsewhere_o do_v grow_v out_o of_o this_o root_n viz._n a_o neglect_n of_o exercise_v the_o heart_n about_o spiritual_a thing_n and_o a_o desire_n to_o be_v always_o pry_v into_o dark_a thing_n from_o whence_o by_o degree_n there_o creep_v into_o the_o soul_n a_o love_n of_o novelty_n and_o new_a matter_n which_o no_o soon_o be_v in_o any_o but_o the_o heart_n be_v as_o prone_a and_o apt_a to_o suck_v in_o error_n as_o a_o sponge_n water_n and_o of_o all_o spirit_n in_o search_v after_o truth_n i_o shall_v desire_v the_o lord_n to_o keep_v i_o from_o this_o a_o spirit_n delight_v itself_o in_o and_o affect_v novelty_n and_o new_a thing_n the_o reason_n of_o this_o point_n with_o the_o application_n i_o shall_v leave_v to_o the_o next_o opportunity_n the_o second_o sermon_n on_o 1_o tim._n 6.11_o fellow_n after_o righteousness_n godliness_n etc._n etc._n the_o last_o opportunity_n i_o have_v in_o this_o place_n i_o tell_v you_o that_o the_o apostle_n give_v these_o word_n as_o a_o direction_n to_o his_o may_v be_v take_v up_o with_o and_o his_o spirit_n exercise_v about_o high_a and_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o prove_v it_o then_o unto_o you_o and_o also_o show_v you_o what_o i_o do_v mean_a by_o spiritual_a thing_n i_o now_o proceed_v to_o the_o reason_n why_o the_o exercise_v the_o heart_n about_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v such_o a_o preservative_n against_o the_o error_n and_o evil_n of_o toy_n and_o the_o other_o such_o a_o querk_n and_o such_o a_o query_n their_o time_n and_o thought_n be_v busy_v about_o and_o they_o be_v continual_o fancy_v and_o invent_v new_a notion_n and_o chimera_n and_o this_o bear_v the_o bell_n and_o be_v all_o in_o request_n to_o day_n and_o this_o to_o morrow_n and_o thus_o they_o strange_o lose_v themselves_o run_v from_o one_o fancy_n unto_o another_o till_o in_o the_o end_n they_o have_v outrun_v reason_n religion_n and_o all_o whereas_o now_o a_o saint_n which_o have_v his_o heart_n exercise_v about_o spiritual_a thing_n be_v like_o a_o man_n which_o be_v in_o great_a deal_n and_o trade_n which_o have_v many_o weighty_a affair_n under_o his_o hand_n together_o and_o be_v by_o reason_n hereof_o so_o full_a of_o employment_n that_o he_o can_v find_v time_n to_o beat_v his_o brain_n about_o this_o querk_n and_o the_o other_o query_n all_o the_o time_n that_o he_o have_v be_v little_a enough_o and_o too_o little_a to_o follow_v so_o as_o that_o he_o may_v not_o be_v a_o loose_a of_o his_o great_a employment_n he_o find_v that_o have_v he_o two_o day_n whereas_o he_o have_v but_o one_o time_n will_v be_v too_o little_a for_o he_o to_o busy_v himself_o how_o he_o may_v enjoy_v more_o communion_n with_o god_n understand_v more_o of_o the_o great_a mystery_n of_o godliness_n get_v his_o heart_n more_o mortify_v his_o grace_n more_o quicken_v etc._n etc._n though_o he_o shall_v allow_v other_o thing_n no_o time_n at_o all_o because_o to_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v exercise_v about_o spiritual_a thing_n other_o thing_n be_v dry_a and_o empty_a such_o a_o heart_n neither_o find_v relish_n in_o they_o nor_o satisfaction_n from_o they_o a_o spiritual_a heart_n delight_v in_o thing_n and_o relish_v they_o as_o they_o be_v spiritual_a that_o which_o much_o relish_v a_o carnal_a heart_n be_v very_o dis-relishing_a to_o the_o spiritual_a man_n as_o take_v a_o carnal_a ear_n that_o love_v to_o hear_v thing_n where_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o curiosity_n and_o of_o the_o varnish_n of_o humane_a wit_n and_o wisdom_n but_o now_o take_v a_o spiritual_a ear_n that_o delight_v to_o hear_v such_o thing_n as_o have_v in_o they_o evidence_n and_o demonstration_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o power_n and_o find_v a_o dis-relishing_a of_o other_o thing_n so_o take_v a_o carnal_a eye_n that_o delight_v to_o behold_v such_o thing_n as_o please_v the_o natural_a sense_n and_o delight_v the_o fancy_n but_o now_o a_o spiritual_a soul_n that_o delight_v to_o behold_v such_o thing_n as_o may_v elevate_v the_o soul_n and_o raise_v the_o affection_n more_o towards_o heaven_n so_o take_v a_o carnal_a heart_n that_o be_v well_o please_v when_o it_o be_v exercise_v about_o toy_n this_o vain_a needless_a question_n and_o the_o other_o but_o now_o a_o spiritual_a heart_n that_o can_v take_v no_o comfortable_a relish_n in_o thing_n of_o this_o nature_n but_o they_o be_v dry_a and_o empty_a unto_o it_o
