or_o kind_n of_o virtue_n and_o duty_n the_o common_a condition_n and_o property_n of_o virtue_n be_v four_o which_o be_v usual_o call_v cardinal_a virtue_n justice_n prudence_n temperance_n and_o fortitude_n justice_n be_v here_o signify_v by_o the_o name_n of_o virtue_n because_o it_o do_v most_o near_o belong_v to_o the_o efficacy_n of_o virtue_n to_o be_v according_a to_o the_o rule_n which_o be_v general_a justice_n prudence_n be_v signify_v by_o knowledge_n because_o prudence_n and_o christian_a wisdom_n consist_v in_o the_o practical_a knowledge_n of_o god_n will_n temperance_n be_v call_v continence_n because_o this_o be_v general_a temperance_n if_o a_o man_n contain_v himself_o or_o abstaine_v from_o those_o enticement_n whereby_o he_o may_v be_v withdraw_v from_o his_o duty_n fortitude_n be_v mean_v here_o by_o patience_n because_o this_o be_v true_a christian_a fortitude_n patient_o to_o suffer_v all_o affliction_n and_o to_o persist_v in_o his_o duty_n notwithstanding_o all_o affliction_n these_o be_v such_o condition_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v in_o every_o duty_n which_o if_o they_o be_v they_o make_v every_o duty_n complete_a nor_o can_v any_o of_o they_o be_v away_o without_o hurt_v of_o the_o virtue_n and_o duty_n the_o kind_n of_o duty_n be_v two_o godliness_n which_o contain_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o first_o table_n and_o charity_n there_o be_v a_o promise_n and_o vow_n wherein_o we_o promise_v unto_o god_n that_o we_o will_v seek_v that_o which_o we_o ask_v of_o he_o so_o that_o to_o ask_v any_o thing_n of_o god_n without_o such_o a_o endeavour_n be_v not_o only_o to_o take_v god_n name_n in_o vain_a but_o also_o plain_o to_o mock_v his_o majesty_n our_o endeavour_n also_o must_v be_v join_v with_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n because_o grace_n tend_v thereunto_o both_o to_o afford_v we_o strength_n to_o endeavour_v and_o also_o to_o stir_v we_o up_o to_o exercise_v that_o strength_n use_v 1_o this_o may_v serve_v all_o good_a from_o who_o every_o good_a and_o perfect_a gift_n come_v and_o make_v he_o the_o chief_a good_a and_o the_o last_o end_n to_o who_o all_o our_o action_n be_v to_o be_v direct_v use_v 1_o this_o may_v serve_v to_o reprove_v those_o that_o attribute_n so_o much_o to_o some_o moral_a and_o humane_a virtue_n that_o they_o prefer_v they_o before_o godliness_n 2._o to_o exhort_v we_o continual_o to_o exercise_v ourselves_o both_o in_o public_a and_o in_o private_a to_o increase_v this_o godliness_n in_o our_o mind_n doct._n 10._o with_o godliness_n towards_o god_n we_o shall_v join_v love_n towards_o our_o neighbour_n reason_n because_o godliness_n itself_o command_v and_o beget_v this_o love_n for_o we_o love_v our_o neighbour_n with_o christian_a love_n when_o we_o love_v he_o for_o god_n sake_n not_o for_o our_o own_o or_o any_o worldly_a respect_n now_o godliness_n produce_v this_o love_n towards_o our_o neighbour_n 1_o because_o it_o teach_v we_o to_o obey_v god_n that_o charity_n which_o be_v separate_v from_o godliness_n be_v not_o true_a charity_n but_o either_o hypocrisy_n or_o some_o humane_a civility_n use_v 1_o this_o may_v serve_v to_o exhort_v we_o to_o show_v and_o adorn_v our_o godliness_n towards_o god_n by_o our_o love_n towards_o our_o neighbour_n 2._o to_o reprove_v those_o that_o make_v show_v of_o much_o godliness_n towards_o god_n benefit_n be_v explain_v by_o the_o primary_n efficient_a cause_n which_o be_v the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n and_o the_o secondary_a cause_n which_o be_v the_o virtue_n themselves_o whereunto_o he_o exhort_v they_o and_o these_o virtue_n he_o explain_v according_a to_o that_o way_n which_o he_o have_v intimate_v before_o in_o the_o exhortation_n touch_v the_o manner_n and_o touch_v the_o degree_n touch_v the_o manner_n that_o they_o be_v in_o you_o touch_v the_o degree_n that_o they_o abound_v the_o doctrine_n arise_v herehence_a doct._n 1._o there_o be_v spiritual_a benefit_n arise_v from_o virtue_n whereby_o the_o faithful_a be_v stir_v up_o to_o labour_n for_o virtue_n this_o be_v gather_v from_o the_o scope_n of_o this_o verse_n and_o from_o the_o connexion_n which_o it_o have_v with_o the_o former_a exhortation_n these_o benefit_n be_v such_o that_o they_o can_v be_v understand_v by_o carnal_a and_o worldly_a man_n but_o the_o faithful_a do_v not_o only_o understand_v they_o but_o also_o seek_v for_o they_o with_o great_a and_o continual_a diligence_n otherwise_o this_o argument_n which_o the_o apostle_n use_v to_o the_o faithful_a will_v have_v be_v altogether_o uneffectual_a but_o these_o benefit_n be_v such_o that_o they_o make_v man_n rich_a not_o in_o this_o world_n but_o in_o the_o lord_n 1_o tim_n 6._o 18._o luke_n 12._o 21._o use_v this_o may_v serve_v to_o reprove_v those_o earthly_a man_n which_o be_v not_o move_v with_o such_o argument_n but_o covet_v the_o gain_n profit_n and_o pleasure_n of_o this_o life_n and_o savour_v not_o those_o thing_n that_o belong_v to_o the_o kingdom_n of_o god_n doct._n 2_o it_o be_v a_o great_a benefit_n to_o the_o faithful_a and_o so_o they_o esteem_v it_o if_o they_o can_v be_v ready_a to_o do_v good_a work_n this_o be_v gather_v from_o that_o they_o make_v you_o that_o you_o shall_v not_o be_v barren_a that_o be_v not_o idle_a or_o slothful_a in_o the_o profession_n of_o religion_n reason_n 1._o because_o it_o be_v the_o great_a misery_n for_o man_n to_o be_v reprobate_a unto_o good_a work_n 2._o because_o by_o this_o readiness_n to_o do_v good_a the_o faithful_a come_v to_o obtain_v their_o desire_n 3._o because_o by_o this_o mean_v the_o life_n spiritual_a be_v exercise_v and_o increase_v for_o as_o all_o life_n be_v the_o begin_n of_o operation_n and_o tend_v unto_o operation_n so_o also_o
the_o apostle_n exhortation_n as_o it_o be_v intimate_v in_o the_o first_o word_n wherefore_o now_o because_o the_o conclusion_n and_o the_o question_n must_v always_o be_v the_o same_o as_o touch_v the_o thing_n itself_o although_o they_o differ_v in_o some_o respect_n there_o be_v no_o doubt_n but_o the_o apostle_n here_o conclude_v the_o same_o thing_n which_o he_o have_v before_o verse_n 5._o propound_v to_o himself_o to_o be_v conclude_v viz._n that_o they_o shall_v give_v all_o diligence_n to_o add_v to_o their_o faith_n virtue_n etc._n etc._n and_o as_o repetition_n in_o the_o scripture_n be_v not_o wont_a to_o be_v vain_a nor_o bare_a but_o for_o the_o most_o part_n with_o some_o usury_n or_o increase_n so_o also_o in_o this_o place_n he_o do_v not_o bare_o repeat_v the_o exhortation_n to_o labour_v for_o virtue_n but_o he_o do_v illustrate_v this_o endeavour_n and_o labour_n by_o the_o proper_a office_n thereof_o that_o be_v by_o the_o confirmation_n of_o our_o call_n and_o election_n so_o that_o he_o do_v both_o repeat_v the_o exhortation_n and_o also_o add_v a_o new_a argument_n and_o that_o a_o most_o weighty_a one_o to_o press_v it_o the_o more_o after_o this_o manner_n if_o by_o the_o exercise_n of_o good_a work_n you_o make_v your_o election_n and_o call_v sure_a then_o shall_v you_o most_v of_o all_o apply_v yourselves_o thereunto_o but_o the_o former_a be_v true_a therefore_o the_o assumption_n be_v lay_v down_o in_o the_o text_n and_o prove_v by_o a_o double_a argument_n 1._o by_o remove_v the_o contrary_a or_o apostasy_n which_o be_v most_o opposite_a to_o the_o assurance_n of_o ou_fw-fr election_n and_o calling_n and_o be_v alike_o opposite_a also_o to_o the_o exercise_n of_o virtue_n and_o good_a work_n which_o be_v show_v in_o these_o word_n if_o you_o do_v these_o thing_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v wherein_o be_v such_o a_o reason_n contain_v if_o you_o shall_v never_o fall_v than_o you_o will_v have_v your_o call_n sure_o the_o second_o argument_n be_v take_v from_o the_o felicity_n adjoin_v which_o be_v set_v forth_o by_o the_o proper_a cause_n thereof_o that_o be_v by_o the_o abundant_a entrance_n into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o christ._n and_o this_o argument_n strengthen_v both_o the_o conclusion_n and_o also_o the_o forego_n argument_n after_o this_o manner_n if_o you_o have_v abundant_a entrance_n into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o christ_n than_o you_o shall_v never_o fall_v but_o hold_v your_o call_n sure_a but_o if_o you_o labour_v to_o be_v virtuous_a and_o to_o do_v good_a work_n you_o shall_v have_v abundant_a entrance_n into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o christ_n therefore_o if_o you_o labour_v to_o be_v virtuous_a and_o to_o do_v good_a work_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v but_o have_v your_o call_n sure_o but_o before_o we_o consider_v the_o conclusion_n itself_o which_o the_o apostle_n lay_v down_o there_o come_v the_o manner_n to_o be_v we_o this_o observation_n that_o there_o be_v not_o a_o more_o brotherly_a office_n then_o to_o stir_v up_o and_o bring_v those_o that_o we_o love_v to_o labour_v and_o endeavour_v to_o lead_v a_o christian_a life_n reason_n 1._o because_o by_o this_o mean_v they_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o great_a evil_n james_n 5._o 20._o 2._o because_o they_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o the_o great_a good_a as_o it_o appear_v in_o the_o text_n use_v 1._o this_o may_v serve_v to_o admonish_v we_o to_o take_v in_o good_a part_n such_o exhortation_n and_o admonition_n that_o be_v give_v we_o whether_o they_o be_v in_o public_a or_o in_o private_a 2._o to_o exhort_v we_o to_o season_v our_o exhortation_n and_o admonition_n after_o this_o manner_n and_o so_o to_o be_v more_o frequent_a in_o these_o duty_n for_o oftentimes_o he_o that_o neglect_v these_o duty_n show_n that_o he_o do_v hate_v his_o brother_n and_o be_v his_o enemy_n they_o be_v proper_a to_o brethren_n and_o the_o near_a be_v far_o worse_o than_o the_o prodigal_a son_n if_o they_o always_o rest_v satisfy_v with_o the_o swâ—nes_n husk_n and_o never_o desire_v the_o bread_n that_o be_v in_o their_o father_n house_n luke_n 15._o 16._o 17._o 2._o to_o exhort_v we_o to_o labour_v for_o a_o spiritual_a hunger_n and_o thirst_n after_o these_o spiritual_a good_a thing_n god_n himself_o show_v we_o the_o best_a mean_n whâ—_n when_o he_o will_v stir_v up_o the_o people_n of_o israel_n to_o desire_v the_o promise_a land_n forthwith_o commend_v unto_o they_o the_o riches_n of_o the_o land_n wherewith_o it_o do_v whereby_o they_o be_v certain_o manifest_v and_o seal_v unto_o we_o and_o this_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o our_o calling_n be_v set_v before_o election_n for_o although_o election_n be_v eternal_a in_o god_n and_o our_o call_n be_v in_o time_n yet_o we_o come_v to_o know_v our_o call_n before_o our_o election_n and_o the_o knowledge_n of_o our_o election_n depend_v upon_o the_o effectualness_n of_o our_o call_n reason_n 1._o because_o although_o god_n himself_o cause_v this_o yet_o he_o do_v it_o partly_o by_o moral_a persuasion_n and_o by_o those_o mean_n wherein_o our_o endeavour_n be_v require_v 2._o because_o there_o arâ—_n no_o effect_n of_o our_o call_n and_o election_n which_o be_v not_o also_o our_o effect_n because_o god_n make_v we_o to_o do_v they_o 3._o because_o that_o
