god_n and_o pour_v out_o thy_o soul_n in_o strong_a cry_n and_o tear_n unto_o thy_o god_n and_o so_o can_v not_o pray_v with_o that_o evidence_n as_o in_o former_a time_n with_o that_o patience_n and_o constancy_n overcome_v thy_o god_n 2._o if_o thou_o grow_v fearful_a of_o trouble_n and_o use_v carnal_a policy_n to_o prevent_v they_o 3._o if_o thou_o grow_v worldly_a and_o covetous_a withdraw_v thy_o hand_n from_o the_o necessity_n of_o thy_o brother_n and_o neglect_v the_o occasion_n of_o charity_n etc._n etc._n 4._o if_o thou_o grow_v negligent_a in_o hear_v the_o word_n content_v thyself_o either_o with_o none_o or_o a_o uneffectual_a ministry_n 5._o if_o thou_o can_v dispense_v with_o thyself_o in_o vain_a sport_n and_o recreation_n game_n vain_a talk_n etc._n etc._n whereof_o heretofore_o thou_o make_v some_o conscience_n waste_v thy_o time_n and_o wit_n in_o they_o 6._o if_o thou_o can_v frame_v to_o all_o company_n and_o temporize_v with_o each_o as_o presume_v upon_o thy_o protection_n from_o thy_o christian_a calling_n ephes_n 5.1_o 7._o if_o thou_o be_v afraid_a of_o death_n and_o neglecte_v the_o daily_a and_o constant_a examination_n of_o thy_o way_n and_o holy_a duty_n in_o private_a unto_o thy_o god_n 8._o if_o thou_o can_v so_o joy_v in_o these_o earthly_a thing_n as_o either_o not_o to_o feel_v a_o loathsomnesse_n in_o they_o or_o not_o to_o use_v they_o as_o spark_n to_o increase_v the_o fire_n of_o thy_o spiritual_a joy_n 9_o if_o thou_o measure_v the_o happiness_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v by_o that_o sense_n which_o for_o the_o present_a thou_o have_v thereof_o thou_o do_v not_o live_v by_o faith_n and_o therefore_o thou_o have_v leave_v thy_o first_o love_n love_n symptom_n that_o follow_v the_o lew_n of_o our_o first_o love_n and_o for_o thy_o comfort_n observe_v herein_o a_o especial_a mercy_n of_o thy_o god_n that_o there_o will_v follow_v this_o loss_n of_o love_n 1._o inward_a trouble_n of_o conscience_n which_o will_v give_v thou_o no_o rest_n till_o thou_o have_v resolve_v thy_o case_n with_o god_n and_o recover_v psal_n 6.38_o etc._n etc._n 2._o some_o outward_a sensible_a stripe_n either_o in_o thy_o good_n person_n child_n to_o open_v thy_o eye_n the_o better_a and_o bring_v thou_o to_o repentance_n job._n 33.15.16_o 3._o now_o the_o world_n will_v not_o fail_v to_o flatter_v thou_o and_o as_o it_o be_v to_o own_v thou_o that_o so_o thou_o may_v suspect_v thyself_o the_o rather_o 4._o and_o yet_o that_o thou_o may_v discern_v the_o world_n love_n thou_o shall_v not_o want_v some_o mock_n and_o reproach_n to_o cast_v the_o dirt_n of_o thy_o decay_n in_o thy_o face_n that_o so_o thou_o may_v be_v ashamed_a and_o confound_v in_o this_o decay_n 5._o and_o happy_o thou_o may_v be_v give_v up_o to_o some_o gross_a sin_n the_o more_o to_o discredit_v thou_o with_o the_o world_n that_o so_o thou_o may_v not_o be_v corrupt_v with_o the_o flattery_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o thus_o thou_o may_v recover_v out_o of_o this_o decay_n love_n how_o to_o recover_v first_o love_n 1._o rest_v upon_o the_o promise_n of_o thy_o god_n that_o thou_o shall_v recover_v out_o of_o any_o effect_n that_o proceed_v from_o thence_o and_o thy_o latter_a end_n shall_v be_v better_o than_o the_o beginning_n 2._o meditate_v on_o the_o former_a experience_n of_o the_o joy_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o so_o thou_o may_v press_v the_o lord_n from_o his_o wont_a mercy_n psal_n 77._o 1._o sam_n 17._o 3._o consider_v the_o mean_n that_o the_o lord_n use_v to_o plant_v this_o joy_n and_o love_n in_o thy_o heart_n and_o by_o the_o same_o know_v that_o he_o will_v renew_v this_o work_n and_o therefore_o at_o no_o hand_n be_v drive_v from_o the_o mean_n cant._n 1._o cant._n 4.5_o 4._o resolve_v that_o thy_o former_a estate_n be_v better_a than_o now_o ose_n 2.8.9_o and_o therefore_o return_v to_o thy_o first_o love_n again_o that_o so_o the_o lord_n may_v renew_v and_o increase_v thy_o love_n unto_o he_o 5._o acquaint_v the_o experience_a soldier_n with_o this_o thy_o estate_n that_o so_o he_o may_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o quicken_v thou_o again_o 6._o give_v we_o not_o over_o our_o pursuit_n of_o these_o comfort_n spare_v we_o no_o pain_n think_v we_o all_o time_n too_o little_a impose_v we_o extraordinary_a affliction_n as_o fast_v and_o so_o groan_v under_o the_o burden_n and_o detest_a ourselves_o give_v we_o the_o lord_n no_o rest_n till_o he_o have_v return_v to_o his_o rest_n and_o recover_v our_o decay_n cant._n 5._o to_o this_o end_n use_v we_o the_o mean_n before_o set_v down_o to_o recover_v from_o apostasy_n and_o be_v we_o comfort_v that_o we_o shall_v not_o altogether_o loose_v our_o labour_n though_o we_o have_v leave_v this_o love_n how_o far_o we_o shall_v recover_v 1._o either_o we_o shall_v recover_v what_o we_o have_v lose_v in_o the_o same_o kind_n namely_o the_o like_a joy_n and_o extraordinary_a comfort_n of_o thou_o 2._o or_o else_o if_o we_o have_v it_o not_o in_o this_o fruit_n of_o our_o love_n yet_o we_o shall_v be_v sure_a to_o recover_v in_o another_o kind_n which_o shall_v be_v more_o profitable_a to_o further_o we_o to_o happiness_n 3._o as_o the_o less_o we_o feel_v this_o love_n the_o more_o we_o shall_v express_v our_o care_n to_o use_v all_o holy_a mean_n whereby_o we_o may_v recover_v it_o again_o 4._o the_o more_o we_o shall_v learn_v to_o live_v by_o faith_n in_o the_o expectation_n of_o a_o great_a measure_n 5._o the_o more_o compassionate_a thou_o shall_v be_v to_o other_o that_o be_v cast_v down_o by_o this_o affliction_n and_o so_o labour_v more_o
earnest_o to_o raise_v they_o up_o again_o that_o so_o together_o with_o they_o thou_o may_v be_v perfect_v heb._n 11._o ult._n that_o so_o maintain_v the_o fellowship_n here_o on_o earth_n thou_o may_v be_v better_o fit_v to_o the_o communion_n in_o heaven_n 6._o and_o as_o thou_o have_v hereby_o great_a occasion_n to_o advance_v the_o mercy_n of_o thy_o god_n in_o not_o leave_v thou_o altogether_o in_o sustain_v thou_o so_o wonderful_o and_o save_v thou_o in_o this_o thy_o decay_n so_o shall_v thou_o be_v provoke_v hereby_o to_o trust_v more_o perfect_o thy_o god_n though_o he_o shall_v abase_v thou_o further_o not_o only_o in_o leave_v thou_o to_o this_o inward_a trial_n of_o a_o languish_a spirit_n and_o eclipse_v of_o joy_n but_o as_o the_o manner_n of_o god_n providence_n be_v to_o prepare_v we_o by_o these_o inward_a affliction_n to_o outward_a trouble_n for_o the_o further_a trial_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o increase_v of_o his_o power_n and_o mercy_n in_o our_o protection_n and_o deliverance_n if_o now_o it_o shall_v please_v our_o glorious_a god_n to_o lead_v we_o through_o fire_n and_o water_n to_o pronounce_v a_o sentence_n of_o death_n against_o we_o that_o we_o may_v not_o trust_v in_o ourselves_o but_o in_o the_o live_a god_n which_o raise_v from_o the_o dead_a that_o so_o after_o we_o have_v suffer_v a_o little_a we_o may_v be_v fit_v to_o eternal_a joy_n that_o so_o in_o our_o outward_a suffering_n our_o inward_a consolation_n may_v abound_v be_v not_o here_o a_o gracious_a recompense_n of_o our_o former_a loss_n be_v not_o here_o a_o marvelous_a mean_n so_o to_o restore_v the_o same_o that_o god_n may_v have_v the_o glory_n that_o we_o by_o this_o mean_n may_v be_v prepare_v unto_o glory_n shall_v not_o our_o love_n be_v now_o challenge_v the_o church_n of_o ephesus_n that_o it_o have_v lose_v all_o her_o love_n or_o that_o it_o have_v absolute_o lose_v she_o first_o love_n but_o only_o that_o it_o have_v leave_v it_o for_o a_o time_n and_o therefore_o it_o may_v recover_v again_o and_o it_o have_v but_o leave_v she_o first_o love_n not_o altogether_o be_v bereave_v of_o all_o love_n well_o may_v it_o leave_v it_o first_o love_n but_o it_o shall_v not_o loose_v all_o and_o for_o our_o further_a satisfaction_n take_v we_o these_o rule_n that_o we_o be_v sound_o in_o some_o measure_n recover_v and_o have_v regain_v true_a joy_n and_o comfort_n of_o our_o salvation_n 1._o if_o our_o joy_n be_v restore_v we_o be_v also_o more_o enable_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o godliness_n grow_v more_o in_o grace_n and_o in_o obedience_n to_o the_o word_n 2._o if_o our_o joy_n be_v daily_a accompany_v with_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n and_o fear_v of_o ourselves_o that_o we_o may_v fall_v again_o with_o more_o sobriety_n in_o the_o use_n of_o worldly_a comfort_n and_o more_o hunger_n after_o durable_a joy_n 3._o if_o we_o be_v more_o wean_v from_o the_o love_n of_o the_o world_n and_o take_v less_o joy_n in_o the_o flesh_n and_o earthly_a thing_n know_v no_o man_n after_o the_o flesh_n 4._o if_o we_o can_v rejoice_v in_o the_o further_a increase_n of_o the_o church_n and_o flourish_a estate_n thereof_o abroad_o though_o it_o go_v not_o so_o well_o with_o our_o own_o particular_a 5._o and_o can_v also_o weep_v with_o they_o that_o languish_v abroad_o though_o our_o own_o cup_n run_v over_o 6._o still_o submit_v ourself_o to_o the_o cross_n 7._o and_o triumph_v in_o our_o great_a tribulation_n 8._o if_o our_o joy_n be_v powerful_a to_o raise_v we_o daily_o from_o sin_n that_o so_o renew_v our_o repentance_n it_o may_v be_v increase_v 9_o if_o it_o be_v sincere_a and_o pure_a not_o so_o much_o rest_v in_o ourselves_o as_o that_o god_n may_v have_v the_o glory_n even_o comfort_v bless_a spirit_n and_o deny_v in_o a_o sort_n the_o merit_n of_o christ_n 4._o here_o be_v first_o instruction_n for_o the_o world_n to_o justify_v god_n faithfulness_n see_v he_o do_v not_o forsake_v for_o ever_o lam._n 3.24.25_o 5._o here_o the_o saint_n be_v lesson_v as_o to_o fear_v their_o fall_n and_o not_o to_o sin_n upon_o presumption_n of_o recovery_n so_o not_o to_o distrust_v of_o god_n mercy_n in_o their_o great_a fail_n see_v the_o lord_n be_v faithful_a and_o they_o shall_v recover_v though_o not_o so_o sensible_a a_o measure_n as_o before_o they_o have_v yet_o sufficient_a to_o fit_v they_o to_o the_o enjoy_n of_o that_o happiness_n that_o the_o lord_n jesus_n have_v purchase_v for_o they_o and_o therefore_o let_v they_o use_v the_o holy_a mean_n that_o they_o may_v recover_v namely_o such_o as_o be_v before_o lay_v down_o in_o the_o recovery_n out_o of_o apostasy_n and_o regain_n first_o love_n and_o hold_v out_o to_o the_o end_n and_o if_o happy_o with_o all_o our_o labour_n we_o shall_v yet_o be_v to_o seek_v of_o what_o we_o will_v have_v for_o the_o further_a satisfy_v and_o comfort_v of_o the_o conscience_n observe_v we_o thdse_v two_o thing_n first_o that_o it_o be_v one_o thing_n to_o leave_v our_o first_o love_n and_o to_o be_v lukewarm_a neither_o hot_a nor_o cold_a we_o may_v not_o have_v such_o feel_n of_o god_n love_n as_o former_o we_o have_v lukewarmnesse_n difference_n between_o leave_v first_o love_n and_o lukewarmnesse_n and_o this_o may_v provoke_v we_o to_o more_o industry_n to_o recover_v again_o as_o the_o joy_n of_o god_n spirit_n may_v be_v a_o occasion_n by_o reason_n of_o spiritual_a pride_n that_o we_o may_v remit_v of_o our_o zeal_n and_o yet_o we_o may_v still_o be_v resolute_a in_o judgement_n what_o shall_v be_v do_v though_o happy_o in_o our_o practice_n we_o may_v abate_v of_o what_o we_o have_v formr_o do_v 1._o wheretas_n lukewarmnesse_n arise_v from_o a_o perverse_a and_o deceive_v judgement_n that_o we_o be_v rich_a we_o want_v nothing_o and_o therefore_o what_o need_v we_o now_o be_v so_o earnest_a and_o painful_a why_o may_v we_o nor_o abate_v of_o our_o labour_n and_o sit_v down_o and_o take_v our_o ease_n may_v we_o not_o be_v whole_o etc._n etc._n 2._o hereupon_o it_o be_v another_o note_n of_o lukewarmnesse_n to_o grow_v indifferent_a to_o any_o side_n to_o be_v between_o both_o ready_a to_o entertain_v what_o may_v stand_v with_o the_o stream_n and_o so_o to_o run_v with_o the_o tide_n as_o occasion_n serve_v but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o with_o such_o as_o have_v simple_o lose_v their_o first_o love_n they_o be_v never_o quiet_a till_o they_o have_v recover_v again_o they_o can_v endure_v any_o other_o love_n to_o share_v in_o their_o affection_n oh_o it_o rejoice_v they_o to_o consider_v what_o a_o true_a and_o faithful_a love_n they_o have_v they_o be_v now_o more_o fond_a of_o he_o when_o he_o absent_v himself_o at_o every_o stone_n must_v be_v roll_v all_o corner_n search_v to_o find_v he_o again_o cant._n 5._o and_o they_o give_v not_o over_o till_o they_o have_v recover_v he_o 2._o that_o there_o be_v great_a odds_n between_o leave_v our_o first_o love_n and_o lose_v it_o altogether_o we_o may_v leave_v in_o regard_n of_o a_o former_a measure_n and_o yet_o hold_v a_o true_a gain_n which_o shall_v clear_v we_o of_o lukewarmnesse_n and_o though_o we_o leave_v a_o measure_n yet_o we_o lose_v not_o all_o because_o the_o least_o remain_v will_v be_v a_o mean_n to_o recover_v again_o if_o not_o so_o much_o as_o we_o have_v have_v yet_o so_o much_o as_o shall_v serve_v both_o to_o keep_v from_o final_a apostasy_n and_o further_o to_o eternal_a glory_n 6_o and_o therefore_o here_o be_v matter_n of_o exceed_a consolation_n to_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n not_o to_o trust_v their_o own_o unbelieve_a heart_n much_o less_o satan_n lie_n but_o to_o rest_v on_o the_o faithfulness_n of_o god_n not_o judge_v themselves_o by_o what_o they_o be_v in_o their_o decay_n but_o by_o what_o they_o be_v in_o their_o first_o love_n and_o so_o press_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o faithfulness_n and_o their_o former_a experience_n they_o shall_v be_v uphold_v in_o their_o great_a fail_n by_o a_o secret_a power_n and_o in_o good_a time_n the_o lord_n will_v appear_v unto_o they_o to_o bring_v forth_o their_o righteousness_n as_o the_o light_n and_o their_o welldoing_a as_o the_o noon_n day_n that_o so_o their_o latter_a end_n may_v be_v better_o than_o their_o beginning_n glory_n be_v to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n
