and_o then_o if_o a_o enemy_n assault_v he_o he_o be_v soon_o slay_v or_o put_v to_o flight_n he_o that_o be_v afraid_a of_o fall_v into_o some_o deadly_a sickness_n will_v easy_o be_v persuade_v to_o look_v to_o his_o diet_n and_o to_o take_v some_o necessary_a physic_n say_v therefore_o in_o thyself_o o_o if_o i_o grow_v careless_a sin_n will_v quick_o grow_v strong_a in_o my_o weakness_n and_o quick_o raise_v up_o itself_o against_o i_o and_o do_v my_o soul_n more_o mischief_n than_o tongue_n can_v express_v how_o have_v many_o of_o god_n saint_n be_v foil_v that_o be_v far_o and_o far_o better_a than_o myself_o shall_v not_o their_o misery_n be_v my_o warning_n if_o such_o worthy_n be_v overthrow_v and_o wound_v what_o will_v become_v of_o i_o if_o i_o grow_v foolish_o bold_a and_o make_v too_o fair_a promise_n to_o myself_o fear_v lest_o one_o shall_v fall_v will_v keep_v he_o upright_o even_o in_o a_o very_a slippery_a way_n but_o soon_o be_v his_o foot_n catch_v from_o he_o suspicion_n of_o our_o weakness_n will_v make_v we_o shun_v the_o occasion_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o preserve_v we_o in_o safety_n when_o other_o that_o be_v more_o
of_o it_o for_o the_o necessity_n of_o mortify_v our_o earthly_a member_n this_o arise_v partly_o from_o god_n commandment_n partly_o from_o the_o great_a danger_n that_o will_v sure_o befall_v we_o upon_o our_o negligence_n herein_o we_o all_o yield_v that_o the_o commandment_n of_o a_o superior_a do_v tie_v those_o that_o be_v under_o his_o authority_n commandment_n in_o regard_n of_o god_n commandment_n and_o make_v that_o thing_n needful_a for_o they_o to_o do_v which_o before_o be_v leave_v to_o their_o own_o pleasure_n and_o like_n his_o commandment_n therefore_o that_o be_v the_o high_a superior_a do_v lay_v the_o most_o absolute_a necessity_n upon_o his_o inferior_n must_v be_v for_o the_o king_n we_o say_v how_o much_o more_o for_o the_o king_n of_o king_n his_o word_n in_o this_o matter_n necessity_n lie_v upon_o you_o and_o woe_n unto_o you_o if_o you_o do_v it_o not_o for_o the_o commandment_n that_o require_v this_o duty_n will_v never_o admit_v of_o a_o of_o their_o regeneration_n do_v receive_v power_n over_o their_o corruption_n yet_o they_o be_v not_o whole_o ride_v of_o they_o the_o dominion_n of_o sin_n be_v take_v away_o at_o the_o conversion_n of_o our_o soul_n to_o god_n the_o presence_n of_o they_o be_v not_o take_v away_o they_o rule_v no_o long_o in_o we_o but_o still_o they_o remain_v in_o we_o and_o that_o so_o as_o if_o they_o be_v not_o with_o daily_a labour_n keep_v under_o they_o will_v grow_v violent_a and_o headstrong_a and_o go_v near_o to_o recover_v their_o ancient_a sovereignty_n at_o least_o to_o bring_v we_o into_o great_a thraldom_n as_o the_o remnant_n of_o the_o canaanite_n do_v the_o israelite_n that_o be_v slack_a in_o root_a they_o out_o as_o therefore_o they_o that_o have_v many_o enemy_n must_v fight_v so_o must_v we_o the_o case_n stand_v with_o we_o here_o as_o with_o soldier_n in_o the_o field_n or_o with_o combatant_n in_o the_o list_n that_o must_v kill_v or_o be_v kill_v at_o least_o kill_v or_o be_v wound_v for_o beside_o the_o aptness_n of_o our_o lust_n to_o gather_v strength_n we_o have_v the_o devil_n also_o a_o crafty_a and_o a_o watchful_a enemy_n always_o seek_v after_o all_o occasion_n of_o increase_v and_o stir_v up_o our_o corruption_n and_o labour_v both_o to_o put_v fuel_n to_o the_o fire_n as_o it_o be_v and_o also_o to_o blow_v the_o coal_n too_o that_o if_o it_o be_v possible_a he_o may_v make_v they_o flame_n forth_o into_o some_o noisome_a disorder_n wherefore_o if_o we_o do_v not_o use_v some_o proportionable_a care_n to_o keep_v down_o sin_n it_o can_v the_o spirit_n among_o and_o above_o many_o other_o four_o evil_n will_v spring_v from_o hence_o first_o we_o shall_v grieve_v and_o quench_v the_o spirit_n of_o god_n that_o be_v in_o we_o and_o cause_v it_o to_o withdraw_v itself_o as_o it_o be_v and_o to_o forbear_v those_o comfortable_a operation_n which_o it_o once_o do_v work_v for_o our_o good_a in_o so_o much_o that_o at_o length_n we_o shall_v have_v no_o feel_n of_o it_o and_o scarce_o be_v able_a to_o discern_v whether_o it_o be_v within_o we_o at_o all_o yea_o or_o no._n the_o flesh_n lust_n against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n and_o these_o two_o be_v contrary_a one_o to_o the_o other_o now_o the_o growth_n of_o one_o contrary_a be_v the_o diminish_n of_o the_o other_o so_o when_o the_o saint_n be_v careless_a to_o resist_v the_o flesh_n they_o perceive_v little_a or_o no_o power_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o and_o sometime_o also_o come_v to_o that_o pass_n that_o they_o be_v in_o a_o great_a fear_n and_o doubt_n whether_o ever_o they_o have_v the_o spirit_n because_o they_o think_v it_o be_v now_o so_o quite_o depart_v from_o they_o if_o we_o fight_v maful_o on_o the_o spirit_n side_n against_o carnal_a lust_n than_o the_o spirit_n of_o grace_n will_v work_v and_o show_v itself_o mighty_a in_o we_o if_o we_o sit_v still_o and_o give_v the_o flesh_n leave_v to_o have_v its_o way_n than_o the_o spirit_n will_v leave_v we_o and_o alas_o it_o be_v woe_n with_o we_o when_o that_o be_v cause_v to_o forsake_v we_o for_o then_o our_o comfort_n our_o peace_n leave_v to_o get_v head_n through_o carelessness_n be_v at_o last_o so_o foil_v by_o the_o wicked_a lust_n of_o his_o heart_n that_o he_o fall_v to_o commit_v some_o gross_a and_o grievous_a sin_n very_o foul_a very_o loathsome_a very_o disgraceful_a for_o you_o must_v not_o think_v that_o the_o man_n regenerate_v be_v out_o of_o the_o danger_n of_o be_v overtake_v with_o heinous_a offence_n indeed_o while_o he_o be_v earnest_a in_o beat_v down_o his_o unruly_a passion_n though_o he_o find_v trouble_v yet_o he_o enjoy_v safety_n and_o though_o his_o lust_n struggle_v and_o annoy_v he_o yet_o they_o can_v break_v forth_o in_o extremity_n but_o if_o he_o once_o become_v heedless_a and_o think_v it_o too_o much_o to_o be_v at_o the_o pain_n of_o continual_o mortify_v they_o than_o they_o raise_v up_o themselves_o and_o carry_v he_o captive_a and_o cause_v he_o to_o give_v his_o member_n as_o weapon_n of_o unrighteousness_n prevail_a so_o far_o at_o length_n that_o if_o god_n himself_o do_v not_o out_o of_o his_o unchangeable_a love_n come_v in_o to_o his_o rescue_n he_o will_v be_v bring_v back_o again_o into_o egypt_n as_o it_o be_v his_o soul_n will_v be_v quite_o slay_v the_o life_n of_o grace_n will_v be_v quite_o extinguish_v and_o he_o will_v return_v the_o second_o time_n to_o be_v dead_a in_o sin_n and_o ah_o what_o wise_a man_n will_v suffer_v his_o sin_n to_o become_v so_o violent_a as_o to_o carry_v he_o into_o such_o enormous_a deed_n as_o david_n and_o solomon_n and_o asa_n and_o vzziah_n fall_v into_o and_o all_o for_o want_v of_o mortify_v these_o member_n a_o man_n once_o sanctify_v may_v assure_v himself_o upon_o his_o faithful_a and_o constant_a endeavour_n in_o mortification_n that_o he_o shall_v escape_v such_o fowl_n but_o if_o he_o grow_v slack_a in_o this_o duty_n he_o can_v expect_v nothing_o but_o to_o have_v his_o conscience_n thus_o wound_v be_v it_o not_o more_o then_o needful_a for_o we_o to_o look_v to_o ourselves_o 7._o for_o last_o affliction_n sore_o affliction_n to_o the_o prevent_n of_o far_o great_a evil_n our_o not-sufficient_o mortify_a lust_n will_v bring_v upon_o we_o exceed_o sore_a affliction_n because_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n be_v such_o that_o he_o will_v not_o see_v we_o perish_v by_o they_o as_o we_o shall_v perish_v if_o he_o do_v not_o apply_v such_o corosives_n to_o cure_v they_o if_o affliction_n come_v not_o betwixt_o neglect_v of_o the_o duty_n of_o mortification_n will_v produce_v the_o evil_a effect_n i_o last_o name_v viz._n the_o perpetrate_a of_o some_o vile_a and_o notorious_a wickedness_n sometime_o the_o lord_n make_v haste_n to_o strike_v we_o for_o the_o prevent_n of_o such_o fall_v but_o if_o we_o be_v once_o fall_v then_o be_v there_o no_o way_n of_o recovery_n but_o by_o some_o bitter_a cross_n either_o inward_a or_o outward_a or_o most_o time_n both_o way_n so_o we_o do_v enforce_v the_o lord_n of_o necessity_n to_o afflict_v we_o unless_o we_o will_v have_v he_o lose_v we_o quite_o when_o we_o wax_v careless_a of_o seek_v to_o prevail_v more_o and_o more_o against_o sin_n a_o crazy_a body_n have_v disorder_v himself_o in_o diet_n must_v needs_o have_v very_o sick_a fit_n and_o some_o sicke-making_a physic_n he_o must_v needs_o take_v or_o else_o death_n will_v follow_v his_o intemperancy_n so_o our_o weak_a and_o crazy_a soul_n be_v bring_v to_o strange_a distemper_n by_o our_o folly_n in_o not_o resist_v the_o sinful_a and_o inordinate_a disposition_n of_o our_o soul_n can_v never_o be_v bring_v again_o to_o any_o tolerable_a soundness_n if_o god_n do_v not_o by_o heavy_a calamity_n help_v to_o purge_v out_o those_o evil_a humour_n which_o we_o have_v suffer_v to_o pester_v up_o our_o soul_n as_o we_o may_v see_v in_o david_n and_o asa_n after_o their_o sin_n and_o certain_o the_o far_o great_a number_n of_o cross_n which_o befall_v the_o people_n of_o god_n do_v come_v from_o hence_o that_o their_o heavenly_a father_n be_v fain_o unless_o he_o will_v see_v they_o damn_v which_o he_o will_v never_o do_v by_o misery_n to_o keep_v down_o lust_n which_o they_o may_v but_o will_n not_o without_o misery_n keep_v down_o by_o the_o careful_a exercise_n of_o mortification_n and_o to_o draw_v they_o to_o repentance_n for_o those_o loathsome_a sin_n which_o for_o lack_v of_o mortify_v their_o earthly_a member_n they_o have_v fall_v into_o and_o will_v never_o repent_v of_o otherwise_o so_o that_o if_o we_o will_v not_o be_v content_a to_o put_v ourselves_o to_o the_o labour_n of_o work_v out_o our_o salvation_n by_o crucify_a the_o flesh_n god_n will_v put_v we_o to_o the_o pain_n of_o bear_v heavy_a cross_n that_o shall_v help_v to_o crucify_v they_o in_o a_o manner_n whether_o we_o will_v or_o no._n and_o do_v we_o not_o see_v a_o necessity_n of_o mortification_n chap._n iii_o show_v the_o profit_n of_o the_o duty_n now_o because_o necessity_n go_v alone_o doeit_v 2._o from_o the_o good_a dishonour_n of_o the_o party_n love_v because_o he_o that_o love_v can_v choose_v but_o esteem_n and_o account_v they_o evil_n yea_o and_o very_o evil_a and_o if_o that_o thing_n be_v present_a with_o any_o man_n which_o he_o hate_v and_o repute_v evil_a it_o must_v of_o necessity_n stir_v up_o in_o he_o a_o measure_n of_o sorrow_n proportionable_a to_o his_o hatred_n wherefore_o this_o grief_n man_n love_n to_o man_n that_o our_o love_n to_o god_n must_v always_o be_v join_v with_o the_o love_n of_o our_o brethren_n even_o of_o all_o that_o be_v make_v of_o the_o same_o flesh_n with_o ourselves_o i_o mean_v our_o heart_n must_v be_v settle_v in_o a_o like_n of_o they_o and_o desire_v of_o their_o welfare_n as_o of_o god_n creature_n to_o who_o he_o have_v please_v to_o unite_v we_o in_o many_o bond_n for_o though_o the_o lord_n do_v allow_v yea_o and_o command_v we_o to_o hate_v the_o worker_n of_o iniquity_n as_o they_o well_o deserve_v because_o they_o commit_v hate-worthy_a action_n yet_o this_o hatred_n must_v not_o be_v any_o habitual_a inclination_n or_o motion_n of_o the_o will_n to_o their_o hurt_n but_o alone_o a_o stir_v up_o of_o the_o affection_n of_o dislike_n against_o they_o or_o not_o brook_v they_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o evil_n which_o they_o commit_v which_o may_v well_o stand_v and_o must_v ever_o be_v join_v with_o the_o virtue_n of_o christian_a charity_n whereby_o out_o of_o a_o like_n of_o they_o as_o god_n creature_n we_o be_v always_o prompt_a and_o ready_a to_o wish_v and_o seek_v their_o good_a now_o if_o we_o do_v thus_o love_v they_o must_v it_o not_o needs_o grieve_v we_o to_o see_v that_o which_o we_o know_v to_o be_v harmful_a and_o mischievous_a to_o they_o love_n can_v choose_v but_o breed_v a_o fellow-feeling_n compassion_n a_o sympathize_v commiseration_n and_o sensibleness_n of_o the_o loss_n evil_a damage_n misery_n of_o the_o party_n love_v wherefore_o sin_n be_v as_o in_o the_o next_o reason_n we_o be_v to_o show_v even_o to_o the_o brim_n indeed_o what_o be_v there_o then_o remain_v that_o can_v in_o any_o reason_n be_v think_v able_a to_o move_v the_o mercy_n of_o god_n to_o long_a forbearance_n when_o none_o general_a upright_o and_o godly_a yet_o if_o in_o that_o particular_a he_o do_v so_o far_o degenerate_a from_o the_o rule_n of_o godliness_n that_o he_o remain_v sorrowless_a for_o the_o dishonour_n do_v to_o god_n by_o other_o this_o ungrieve_v disposition_n have_v so_o deep_o engage_v he_o into_o the_o guilt_n of_o those_o sin_n that_o it_o will_v very_o hardly_o stand_v with_o the_o truth_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n to_o let_v he_o go_v free_a but_o he_o must_v cause_v he_o for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o own_o soul_n by_o the_o smart_n of_o cross_n to_o grieve_v for_o such_o evil_n as_o else_o he_o will_v not_o grieve_v for_o so_o mischief_n upon_o mischief_n break_v in_o when_o tear_n and_o mourn_a stand_v not_o up_o to_o prevent_v the_o same_o a_o man_n self_n be_v infect_v he_o become_v careless_a of_o reform_v evil_n god_n smite_v the_o whole_a society_n for_o the_o sin_n now_o commit_v by_o all_o and_o lament_v by_o none_o and_o then_o he_o that_o mourn_v not_o must_v himself_o also_o smart_a for_o company_n shall_v we_o not_o seek_v to_o stop_v the_o way_n against_o all_o and_o each_o of_o these_o evil_n by_o entrench_v ourselves_o as_o it_o be_v within_o these_o river_n of_o water_n and_o so_o brethren_n you_o have_v reason_n great_a store_n to_o prove_v the_o duty_n and_o persuade_v unto_o it_o if_o you_o love_v god_n who_o sin_n grieve_v if_o you_o love_v your_o neighbour_n who_o sin_n hurt_v and_o if_o you_o hate_v sin_n itself_o which_o all_o aught_o to_o hate_v that_o love_n god_n and_o their_o neighbour_n if_o you_o consider_v how_o loathsome_a and_o grievous_a a_o thing_n sin_n be_v how_o offensive_a to_o god_n yea_o and_o injurious_a how_o harmful_a also_o to_o mankind_n both_o to_o he_o that_o dare_v practice_v it_o who_o soul_n it_o tumble_v to_o the_o bottom_n of_o hell_n beside_o other_o cross_n of_o all_o sort_n which_o attend_v it_o for_o the_o present_a and_o also_o to_o the_o country_n where_o it_o be_v suffer_v cause_v the_o lord_n to_o send_v out_o sword_n pestilence_n famine_n and_o all_o manner_n of_o doleful_a misery_n against_o it_o if_o you_o consider_v that_o this_o mourning_n will_v sure_o cause_v the_o lord_n to_o reprieve_n the_o whole_a country_n and_o that_o it_o will_v keep_v the_o soul_n of_o the_o mourner_n free_a from_o infection_n and_o stir_v he_o up_o to_o all_o due_a mean_n of_o redress_v sin_n and_o so_o save_v his_o own_o soul_n at_o least_o from_o the_o common_a calamity_n when_o it_o can_v now_o be_v long_a not_o defer_v and_o last_o if_o you_o remember_v that_o where_o this_o mourning_n be_v absent_a a_o man_n soul_n will_v sure_o be_v infect_v he_o will_v grow_v careless_a of_o do_v that_o which_o he_o ought_v to_o do_v for_o redress_v of_o evil_a and_o so_o sin_n grow_v mighty_a will_v infallible_o and_o inevitable_o procure_v a_o common_a judgement_n in_o which_o himself_o shall_v also_o as_o a_o man_n not_o sign_v for_o deliverance_n be_v take_v away_o among_o the_o rest_n if_o i_o say_v you_o do_v acknowledge_v and_o confess_v all_o these_o thing_n as_o they_o be_v all_o manifest_a and_o do_v serious_o lay_v they_o to_o heart_n you_o can_v choose_v but_o
