possible_a &_o come_v again_o for_o i_o know_v certain_o that_o how_o narrow_o we_o look_v to_o ourselves_o and_o as_o much_o good_a as_o we_o can_v do_v yet_o we_o be_v like_a to_o get_v there_o in_o thing_n of_o necessity_n and_o love_n withdraw_v myself_o altogether_o from_o they_o wherefore_o do_v you_o so_o quoth_v desire_n because_o now_o a_o day_n there_o be_v no_o spiritual_a prayer_n love_n and_o goodly_a zeal_n practise_v and_o exercise_v and_o those_o that_o boast_v of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n common_o decay_v in_o slothfulness_n therefore_o i_o will_v accustom_v myself_o therefore_o present_o at_o the_o gate_n of_o the_o palace_n but_o find_v they_o shut_v close_o begin_v to_o call_v and_o knock_v yet_o notwithstanding_o after_o long_o cry_v and_o knock_v none_o come_v to_o answer_v call_v and_o cry_v aloud_o quoth_v sincerity_n for_o in_o so_o do_v although_o they_o be_v all_o a_o sleep_n or_o half_a deaf_a it_o can_v be_v but_o they_o shall_v hear_v thou_o knock_v hard_a with_o the_o hammer_n which_o do_v hang_v at_o the_o gate_n and_o then_o soon_o they_o will_v open_v the_o door_n unto_o thou_o for_o there_o hang_v two_o hammer_n at_o the_o gate_n and_o let_v they_o come_v in_o then_o we_o let_v those_o without_o open_v unto_o they_o return_v back_o again_o because_o we_o open_v not_o the_o door_n to_o any_o who_o think_v that_o he_o have_v deserve_v it_o and_o persuade_v himself_o that_o he_o be_v worthy_a of_o it_o and_o that_o it_o be_v our_o duty_n and_o be_v bind_v to_o do_v it_o and_o be_v thou_o none_o of_o those_o fellow_n no_o my_o good_a lord_n quoth_v desire_n for_o although_o i_o have_v suffer_v and_o sustain_v much_o sorrow_n and_o pain_n both_o of_o body_n and_o soul_n yet_o i_o know_v for_o certain_a that_o i_o have_v not_o deserve_v &_o be_o altogether_o unworthye_a to_o enter_v into_o the_o house_n unless_o it_o will_v please_v your_o lord_n ship_n through_o your_o great_a mercy_n &_o goodness_n to_o lead_v and_o bring_v i_o within_o wherefore_o will_v thou_o come_v in_o quoth_v that_o love_n of_o god_n or_o who_o do_v thou_o seek_v here_o in_o this_o house_n my_o lord_n answer_v desire_v i_o be_o come_v from_o the_o palace_n of_o humility_n accompanied_z with_o these_o worthy_a personage_n and_o have_v take_v my_o tourney_n through_o the_o near_a way_n be_v patience_n to_o seek_v out_o the_o love_n that_o i_o have_v dwell_v in_o the_o palace_n of_o humility_n for_o a_o time_n and_o that_o they_o have_v show_v i_o there_o all_o the_o house_n the_o damsel_n their_o nature_n and_o condition_n but_o i_o can_v tell_v whether_o i_o have_v well_o digest_v in_o my_o stomach_n the_o fruit_n which_o i_o have_v eat_v there_o although_o they_o be_v unto_o i_o very_o toothsome_a and_o pleasant_a unbelief_n and_o imperfection_n and_o the_o chief_a occasion_n that_o move_v i_o to_o seek_v the_o love_n of_o god_n be_v this_o that_o i_o hear_v that_o he_o be_v a_o good_a physician_n and_o chirurgeon_n &_o will_v let_v i_o blonde_a and_o purge_v i_o from_o all_o corruption_n and_o uncleanness_n and_o i_o be_o tell_v as_o soon_o as_o he_o do_v see_v one_o know_v present_o his_o disease_n although_o it_o lie_v hide_v secret_a win_v the_o heart_n and_o wheresoever_o he_o put_v his_o hand_n upon_o there_o he_o purge_v and_o cleanse_v all_o thing_n wherefore_o say_v the_o love_n of_o god_n do_v thou_o desire_v to_o be_v thus_o clean_o sound_a and_o unspotted_a because_o answer_v desire_n that_o i_o be_v also_o tell_v that_o none_o who_o be_v unclean_a and_o undefiled_a shall_v can_v enter_v or_o come_v into_o this_o place_n see_v it_o be_v so_o as_o thou_o say_v quoth_v the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o that_o thou_o put_v all_o thy_o confidence_n into_o our_o hand_n tarry_v a_o great_a way_n to_o the_o palace_n of_o humility_n and_o thou_o shall_v take_v a_o horse_n to_o ride_v on_o call_v to_o think_v well_o of_o every_o man_n and_o by_o these_o mean_n may_v thou_o come_v by_o this_o herb_n every_o morning_n the_o second_o herb_n be_v make_v of_o three_o sundry_a herb_n of_o the_o first_o think_v humble_o of_o meekness_n and_o affability_n in_o speech_n &_o upon_o the_o last_o be_v cast_v a_o small_a ponder_v call_v slow_a and_o little_a the_o three_o herb_n call_v to_o work_v humble_o be_v make_v of_o diverse_a herb_n whereof_o mirth_n love_n and_o quietness_n or_o diligence_n be_v the_o chief_a and_o whensoever_o thou_o do_v feed_v i_o with_o these_o herb_n than_o our_o acquaintance_n and_o friend_n ship_n will_v continue_v &_o abide_v for_o while_n i_o will_v go_v call_v my_o lord_n &_o see_v whether_o he_o will_v come_v forth_o to_o speak_v with_o thou_o the_o third_o chapter_n intreat_v of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n &_o his_o neighbour_n and_o of_o the_o second_o degree_n to_o love_n &_o of_o his_o office_n and_o daily_a exercise_n desire_n doubt_v whether_o the_o love_n of_o god_n will_v come_v forth_o to_o speak_v with_o brother_n what_o do_v thou_o look_v for_o or_o what_o be_v thy_o desire_n sir_n quoth_v desire_v i_o look_v for_o that_o love_n of_o god_n i_o be_o be_v answer_v the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o as_o soon_o as_o desire_n do_v hear_v this_o fall_v in_o a_o sound_n but_o the_o love_n of_o god_n take_v he_o by_o the_o hand_n and_o lift_v he_o up_o reviue_v he_o again_o and_o when_o he_o see_v the_o love_n of_o god_n make_v so_o much_o of_o he_o he_o begin_v most_o bitter_o to_o weep_v insomuch_o that_o he_o can_v not_o speak_v any_o word_n at_o all_o which_o the_o love_n of_o god_n see_v be_v have_v than_o it_o be_v call_v wish_v or_o advance_v not_o to_o have_v &_o herewithal_o i_o feed_v and_o maintain_v the_o other_o damsel_n call_v poverty_n stay_v a_o while_n quoth_v desire_v why_o shall_v i_o not_o wish_v or_o advance_v myself_o to_o have_v something_o when_o i_o lack_v this_o be_v not_o thus_o to_o be_v understand_v answer_v the_o love_n of_o god_n for_o if_o thou_o need_v belong_v to_o the_o maintenance_n &_o and_o sustenance_n of_o the_o body_n as_o more_z drink_n apparel_n and_o such_o like_a thing_n be_v how_o shall_v i_o know_v quoth_v desire_v whether_o it_o be_v needful_a superfluity_n or_o wantonness_n only_o that_o which_o i_o demand_v or_o crave_v to_o have_v see_v answer_v the_o love_n of_o god_n whether_o thou_o can_v forbear_v it_o and_o live_v without_o it_o without_o the_o great_a hindrance_n peril_n and_o danger_n of_o thy_o soul_n and_o body_n but_o if_o thou_o do_v perceive_v that_o it_o shall_v turn_v thou_o to_o such_o peril_n &_o not_o as_o i_o have_v say_v dangerous_a and_o hurtful_a to_o thy_o health_n although_o somewhat_o painful_a troublesome_a and_o tedious_a to_o thy_o flesh_n then_o to_o desire_v nothing_o be_v a_o therefore_o if_o thou_o can_v forbear_v it_o without_o the_o hazard_n and_o endanger_n both_o of_o thy_o soul_n and_o body_n then_o to_o crave_v ask_v and_o demand_n esteem_v it_o wantonness_n only_o although_o it_o cover_v itself_o which_o the_o cloak_n of_o necessity_n want_n need_v &_o holiness_n for_o sin_n never_o disclose_v and_o show_v themselves_o hare_n but_o present_v themselves_o always_o under_o the_o colour_n of_o good_a thing_n and_o hereby_o may_v thou_o know_v whether_o it_o be_v necessary_a or_o not_o when_o thou_o crave_v some_o thing_n and_o that_o none_o deceive_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o opinion_n they_o need_v great_o a_o diligent_a inquisition_n &_o a_o virtuous_a exercise_n and_o if_o they_o be_v destitute_a hereof_o then_o set_v they_o go_v about_o their_o business_n with_o counsel_n of_o the_o holy_a scripture_n or_o with_o the_o advice_n of_o
because_o there_o be_v many_o lady_n dwell_v in_o it_o under_o one_o sovereign_a call_v humility_n and_o what_o gentle_a woman_n be_v she_o say_v he_o that_o watch_v without_o at_o the_o gate_n she_o be_v call_v vainglory_n answer_v she_o watch_v continual_o at_o the_o gate_n till_o they_o be_v open_v and_o whensoever_o the_o porter_n look_v not_o narrow_o to_o she_o or_o take_v small_a heed_n to_o his_o charge_n than_o she_o presume_v oftentimes_o to_o come_v in_o wherefore_o will_v thou_o not_o suffer_v she_o to_o come_v in_o say_a desire_n see_v her_o word_n her_o apparel_n and_o favour_n seem_v to_o be_v honest_a and_o virtuous_a ah_o brother_n answer_v she_o thou_o do_v not_o yet_o know_v she_o for_o she_o be_v a_o most_o pestilent_a and_o wicked_a creature_n and_o self-conceit_n these_o three_o be_v our_o great_a foe_n in_o the_o world_n be_v yet_o great_a enemy_n to_o the_o lord_n and_o chief_a of_o the_o house_n call_v the_o love_n of_o god_n will_v thou_o know_v what_o injury_n she_o do_v unto_o we_o whensoever_o she_o enter_v by_o one_o way_n or_o another_o into_o the_o house_n she_o be_v very_o greedy_a and_o hungry_a and_o run_v present_o to_o a_o garden_n and_o eat_v all_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o best_a tree_n which_o we_o have_v by_o the_o which_o we_o do_v live_v only_o &_o be_v all_o maintain_v and_o have_v but_o one_o of_o these_o tree_n mastine_n he_o be_v give_v i_o say_v he_o for_o at_o the_o first_o i_o have_v but_o a_o small_a one_o that_o be_v bring_v up_o in_o my_o chamber_n till_o i_o meet_v a_o shepherd_n who_o have_v bestow_v this_o dog_n upon_o i_o to_o bring_v i_o in_o safety_n through_o this_o great_a forest_n how_o do_v thou_o call_v he_o say_v she_o goodwill_n say_v he_o it_o be_v a_o very_a good_a dog_n there_o be_v seven_o house_n in_o this_o desert_n and_o there_o be_v no_o other_o high_a way_n but_o one_o but_o for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n i_o will_v show_v thou_o a_o short_a foot_n path_n which_o will_v shorten_v thy_o way_n that_o thou_o may_v come_v the_o soon_o to_o thy_o journey_n end_n but_o thou_o must_v follow_v my_o counsel_n desire_n be_v glad_a to_o hear_v these_o word_n the_o four_o of_o fortitude_n the_o five_o of_o temperance_n the_o sixth_o of_o faith_n the_o seven_o of_o hope_n the_o eight_o of_o charity_n and_o in_o the_o last_o of_o all_o dwellet_n the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o be_v sovereign_n of_o the_o house_n &_o all_o this_o way_n must_v thou_o go_v so_o thou_o will_v not_o go_v out_o of_o thy_o way_n but_o as_o i_o have_v tell_v thou_o before_o so_o according_a to_o my_o promise_n will_v i_o show_v thou_o a_o foot_n path_n to_o shorten_v thy_o way_n but_o first_o of_o all_o must_v thou_o dwell_v for_o a_o time_n here_o in_o this_o house_n for_o to_o learn_v mark_n and_o remember_v all_o our_o manner_n and_o become_v acquaint_v with_o our_o sovereign_n &_o her_o watch_a maid_n and_o never_o to_o forget_v their_o name_n nor_o their_o countenance_n and_o when_o thou_o shall_v have_v have_v a_o trial_n of_o all_o belong_v to_o this_o house_n and_o shall_v bring_v certain_a token_n from_o we_o to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n then_o soon_o will_v he_o entertain_v thou_o for_o the_o great_a affection_n he_o bear_v to_o our_o house_n above_o any_o of_o the_o rest_n and_o chief_o when_o he_o shall_v see_v a_o letter_n from_o our_o sovereign_n wherefore_o demand_v desire_n do_v this_o knight_n love_v this_o house_n more_o
instruction_n by_o these_o mean_n for_o to_o find_v out_o the_o love_n of_o god_n most_o willing_o will_v i_o they_o satisfy_v thy_o mind_n answer_v humility_n and_o disclose_v all_o my_o secret_n &_o communicate_v unto_o there_o my_o daily_a exercise_n first_o my_o godly_a pretence_n and_o purpose_n be_v my_o husband_n whereof_o i_o have_v speak_v unto_o thou_o before_o make_v i_o by_o the_o mean_n of_o contempt_n to_o overcome_v the_o world_n and_o by_o chaste_v and_o fast_v to_o rule_v my_o one_o flesh_n and_o to_o vanquish_v satan_n by_o humility_n and_o make_v i_o sovereign_n of_o this_o house_n but_o chief_o of_o myself_o which_o be_v the_o most_o of_o all_o for_o when_o my_o flesh_n feel_v that_o i_o travel_n and_o endeavour_n to_o please_v the_o love_n of_o god_n than_o it_o do_v resist_v i_o with_o all_o his_o crew_n &_o be_v continual_o disquiet_v with_o my_o do_n but_o nevertheless_o my_o soul_n do_v then_o remain_v in_o peace_n contentment_n and_o quietness_n desire_n do_v marvel_v great_o at_o the_o word_n of_o lady_n humility_n and_o say_v i_o pray_v your_o ladyship_n that_o it_o may_v please_v you_o to_o instruct_v i_o by_o some_o similitude_n in_o these_o thing_n for_o i_o be_o somewhat_o dull_a of_o understanding_n so_o that_o i_o shall_v better_o conceive_v your_o meaning_n by_o a_o example_n or_o comparison_n this_o motion_n do_v great_o please_v humility_n and_o chief_o because_o she_o see_v how_o he_o do_v begin_v to_o wax_v humble_a in_o confess_v the_o dulness_n and_o grossness_n of_o his_o wit_n and_o understanding_n and_o say_v my_o child_n whensoever_o any_o of_o that_o foresay_a woman_n do_v enter_v in_o than_o i_o behave_v myself_o in_o this_o sort_n as_o for_o example_n when_o concupiscence_n of_o the_o flesh_n begin_v to_o siruit_n with_o i_o before_o she_o be_v able_a to_o come_v to_o i_o i_o know_v she_o and_o her_o condition_n very_o well_o for_o she_o be_v very_o gluttonous_a and_o gather_v force_n by_o eat_v and_o drink_v therefore_o i_o withdraw_v from_o she_o all_o dainty_a kind_n of_o meat_n and_o will_v not_o give_v she_o so_o much_o of_o ordinary_a diet_n as_o she_o do_v desire_n to_o have_v and_o because_o my_o force_n be_v not_o able_a to_o withstand_v or_o to_o vanquish_v she_o for_o my_o own_o household_n come_v to_o aid_v and_o to_o assist_v she_o i_o crave_v and_o call_v for_o help_v at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n who_o stand_v always_o at_o my_o side_n to_o strengthen_v i_o against_o these_o wicked_a woman_n moreover_o i_o do_v esteem_v myself_o to_o be_v as_o a_o beast_n who_o do_v eat_v no_o more_o than_o his_o master_n do_v give_v and_o allow_v he_o but_o when_o his_o master_n see_v that_o he_o be_v greedy_a at_o his_o meat_n he_o do_v restrain_v his_o mouth_n with_o a_o muffle_v because_o he_o shall_v not_o eat_v but_o at_o such_o time_n and_o such_o as_o it_o do_v please_v he_o to_o give_v unto_o he_o wherefore_o the_o love_n of_o god_n my_o only_a master_n have_v able_a eschew_v all_o thing_n whereby_o she_o seek_v to_o entice_v i_o to_o her_o love_n and_o like_n esteem_v this_o to_o be_v the_o best_a and_o only_o cemedy_n to_o escape_v her_o snare_n and_o deceit_n furthermore_n she_o assault_v not_o only_o my_o body_n but_o also_o my_o mind_n with_o diverse_a and_o strange_a imagination_n and_o thought_n for_o the_o which_o to_o avoid_v likewise_o i_o judge_v it_o the_o best_a remedy_n to_o cast_v my_o mind_n upon_o my_o saviour_n christ_n and_o continual_o to_o behold_v his_o death_n passion_n &_o martyrdom_n as_o also_o to_o remender_n the_o pame_n of_o hell_n the_o straitnes_n of_o the_o last_o judgement_n and_o my_o small_a enâ—e_n and_o that_o i_o must_v appear_v before_o the_o tribunal_n seat_n of_o god_n to_o give_v a_o account_n the_o xi_o chapter_n lady_n humility_n speak_v against_o the_o concupiscence_n of_o the_o eye_n and_o the_o pride_n of_o life_n it_o avail_v not_o to_o have_v overthrow_v the_o one_o unless_o i_o shall_v endeavour_n myself_o also_o to_o vanquish_v the_o other_o her_o fellow_n and_o companion_n who_o be_v steward_n of_o this_o ungodly_a palace_n &_o be_v call_v concupiscence_n of_o the_o eye_n natural_a rest_n and_o because_o i_o esteem_v myself_o to_o be_v such_o a_o other_o for_o the_o love_n of_o god_n i_o will_v use_v my_o body_n according_a as_o they_o be_v use_v for_o when_o the_o master_n do_v mark_v that_o they_o wax_v wild_a and_o stubborn_a he_o put_v a_o bit_n and_o bridle_n in_o their_o mouth_n to_o rule_v they_o after_o his_o own_o will_n likewise_o bathe_v the_o love_n of_o god_n bridle_v i_o with_o a_o bit_n call_v shamefastness_n that_o i_o shall_v not_o curious_o behold_v and_o love_v vanity_n for_o it_o be_v dangerous_a to_o behold_v that_o which_o be_v forbid_v to_o be_v desire_v or_o covet_v wherefore_o the_o love_n of_o god_n have_v give_v i_o warning_n when_o â—â—ever_o i_o shall_v come_v to_o â—â—ever_o i_o shall_v come_v to_o see_v a_o thing_n which_o magnify_v he_o therein_o i_o do_v not_o forget_v also_o his_o great_a mercy_n show_v unto_o his_o enemy_n which_o he_o do_v daily_o yet_o continue_v marvel_v great_o in_o his_o omnipotency_n excellency_n &_o incomprehensible_a goodness_n in_o that_o he_o do_v not_o punish_v they_o according_a to_o their_o desert_n but_o rather_o do_v make_v they_o partaker_n of_o his_o bounty_n and_o not_o esteem_v to_o enter_v in_o his_o privy_a chamber_n although_o they_o be_v of_o his_o household_n and_o daily_a servant_n wherefore_o quoth_v desire_n do_v you_o give_v he_o all_o this_o praise_n thanksgiving_n and_o blessing_n because_o answer_v the_o love_n of_o god_n the_o more_o i_o extol_v his_o goodness_n and_o the_o more_o i_o disable_v and_o humble_v myself_o before_o he_o the_o more_o love_n and_o mind_n upon_o any_o thing_n but_o upon_o he_o only_o and_o because_o he_o have_v vouchsafe_v to_o accept_v i_o for_o his_o servant_n and_o friend_n and_o have_v honour_v i_o with_o such_o a_o office_n that_o it_o will_v likewise_o please_v he_o to_o give_v i_o the_o spirit_n of_o humility_n who_o may_v draw_v and_o turn_v away_o my_o mind_n from_o pride_n &_o from_o all_o that_o do_v displease_v he_o to_o the_o end_n my_o service_n be_v not_o to_o his_o dishonour_n but_o to_o his_o honour_n and_o glory_n give_v i_o that_o which_o he_o know_v to_o be_v most_o needful_a unto_o i_o &_o that_o which_o he_o be_v willing_a i_o shall_v have_v to_o his_o glory_n for_o to_o be_v more_o acceptable_a unto_o he_o and_o this_o i_o do_v for_o no_o other_o cause_n but_o that_o i_o may_v my_o lord_n for_o it_o be_v all_o my_o comfort_n joy_n pleasure_n and_o my_o sovetaigne_n good_a to_o be_v in_o his_o company_n to_o speak_v and_o ask_v his_o advice_n and_o counsel_n and_o i_o be_o never_o content_v quiet_a satisfy_v or_o assure_v but_o when_o i_o be_o with_o he_o and_o therefore_o i_o have_v determine_v to_o leave_v &_o forsake_v all_o thing_n for_o to_o dwell_v and_o remain_v with_o he_o and_o never_o to_o go_v from_o he_o but_o when_o he_o do_v command_v it_o i_o it_o be_v yet_o quoth_v desire_n sometime_o needful_a to_o read_v also_o it_o be_v true_a answer_v the_o love_n of_o god_n that_o read_v be_v good_a not_o for_o to_o become_v crafty_a and_o subtle_a thereby_o but_o only_o for_o to_o learn_v to_o know_v god_n and_o his_o way_n &_o to_o love_v he_o as_o we_o shall_v and_o to_o this_o i_o need_v not_o many_o book_n but_o will_v deep_o fall_v in_o love_n with_o my_o lord_n and_o set_v all_o my_o desire_n and_o whole_a mind_n upon_o he_o with_o all_o my_o understanding_n and_o wisdom_n for_o his_o love_n do_v suffice_v i_o and_o will_v instruct_v i_o in_o all_o thing_n which_o be_v requite_v for_o i_o to_o know_v and_o he_o will_v by_o the_o mean_n of_o love_n disclose_v and_o open_v unto_o i_o more_o secreate_v than_o all_o the_o book_n of_o the_o world_n be_v able_a to_o do_v and_o my_o soul_n gather_v more_o pureness_n fear_n fervency_n reverence_n repentance_n strength_n and_o force_n to_o resist_v my_o flesh_n when_o i_o be_o with_o he_o then_o when_o i_o do_v read_v beside_o i_o know_v that_o he_o never_o will_v ask_v a_o account_n how_o much_o i_o have_v read_v &_o study_v but_o how_o i_o have_v honour_v and_o love_v he_o yet_o hereby_o i_o will_v not_o seem_v to_o condemn_v read_n chief_o in_o those_o who_o know_v not_o the_o way_n of_o god_n nor_o the_o government_n of_o the_o spirit_n nor_o can_v frame_v in_o good_a order_n their_o thought_n word_n and_o deed_n as_o they_o shall_v do_v to_o those_o i_o say_v it_o be_v necessary_a that_o they_o shall_v read_v a_o long_a time_n to_o become_v prompt_a &_o ready_a in_o spiritual_a &_o inward_a exercise_n for_o other_o wise_a it_o will_v be_v a_o great_a madness_n presumption_n nay_o a_o contempt_n &_o despise_v oâ—_n the_o king_n that_o a_o clownish_a fellow_n who_o know_v not_o the_o use_n custom_n and_o language_n of_o the_o court_n will_v come_v personal_o to_o speak_v with_o the_o king_n in_o the_o presence_n of_o all_o his_o lord_n &_o noble_n &_o now_o be_v in_o that_o midst_n of_o his_o talk_n shall_v cast_v forth_o unwise_a &_o foolish_a word_n according_a unto_o his_o custom_n for_o this_o shall_v turn_v to_o his_o great_a shame_n &_o confusion_n for_o the_o king_n will_v command_v he_o to_o be_v drive_v away_o so_o that_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v better_o for_o he_o never_o to_o have_v presume_v to_o show_v himself_o before_o his_o majesty_n and_o thus_o it_o be_v with_o spiritual_a matter_n but_o those_o that_o have_v get_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o of_o heavenly_a thing_n either_o by_o read_v or_o hear_v prayer_n be_v much_o more_o profitable_a &_o a_o more_o excellent_a a_o exercise_n then_o read_n be_v now_o somewhat_o acquaint_v with_o the_o manner_n use_v and_o custom_n use_v in_o the_o spiritual_a and_o heavenly_a court_n and_o when_o i_o be_o now_o before_o my_o lord_n than_o i_o take_v heed_n that_o i_o turn_v not_o my_o head_n eye_n &_o body_n hither_o and_o thither_o because_o it_o be_v a_o sign_n of_o contempt_n of_o his_o word_n when_o one_o speak_v unto_o he_o and_o then_o turn_v his_o face_n another_o way_n declare_v this_o unto_o i_o quoth_v desire_n somewhat_o better_a for_o i_o
quoth_v to_o desire_n god_n will_v thou_o go_v hence_o and_o return_v again_o from_o whence_o thou_o be_v come_v where_o shall_v i_o travail_v answer_v desire_n for_o to_o be_v better_a than_o i_o that_o they_o shall_v command_v thou_o answer_v to_o desire_v god_n and_o when_o i_o shall_v not_o be_v command_v at_o all_o say_v desire_n what_o shall_v i_o do_v then_o sing_v answer_v to_o desire_n god_n praise_n thank_v &_o magnify_v the_o lord_n and_o whensoever_o thou_o art_n about_o thy_o business_n &_o do_v that_o be_v command_v unto_o then_o them_z thou_o may_v yet_o sing_v to_o thyself_o i_o which_o more_o be_v the_o base_a &_o vile_a the_o person_n be_v if_o he_o do_v but_o debase_v &_o humble_v himself_o the_o great_a favour_n and_o courtesy_n he_o show_v unto_o he_o and_o will_v do_v he_o the_o more_o good_a and_o i_o tell_v thou_o plain_a that_o the_o most_o part_n of_o these_o that_o be_v dwell_v here_o be_v but_o of_o simple_a parentage_n &_o progeny_n for_o god_n have_v choose_v those_o for_o his_o service_n who_o be_v the_o abject_n of_o that_o world_n to_o the_o end_n that_o no_o body_n who_o dwell_v here_o shall_v think_v he_o to_o be_v receyve_v and_o entertain_v for_o his_o desert_n &_o worthiness_n but_o only_o through_o the_o goodness_n and_o mere_a mercy_n of_o god_n therefore_o if_o thou_o be_v willing_a for_o to_o dwell_v here_o and_o desirous_a not_o to_o loose_v but_o to_o profit_n &_o further_o thyself_o and_o procure_v that_o thy_o song_n be_v acceptable_a unto_o god_n remember_v these_o four_o part_n the_o first_o be_v goodwill_n the_o second_o humility_n that_o third_z patience_n the_o four_o love_n or_o charity_n and_o whensoever_o thou_o sing_v with_o these_o four_o part_n thou_o shall_v never_o fail_v in_o thy_o song_n and_o to_o desire_v god_n do_v bring_v desire_n into_o the_o chamber_n of_o the_o lord_n &_o beside_o intreat_v of_o a_o instruction_n to_o prayer_n i_o will_v pray_v you_o for_o to_o get_v one_o savoure_n more_o at_o your_o hand_n which_o be_v see_v you_o have_v entertain_v i_o &_o grant_v that_o i_o shall_v dwell_v here_o that_o it_o may_v please_v you_o likewise_o to_o bring_v i_o to_o my_o lord_n can_v come_v before_o that_o lord_n in_o as_o much_o that_o he_o be_v mind_v to_o turn_v back_o again_o but_o when_o he_o remember_v again_o the_o nobility_n and_o unspeakable_a courtesy_n and_o goodness_n of_o this_o king_n &_o how_o loving_a &_o affable_a he_o be_v to_o every_o man_n he_o comfort_v himself_o upon_o his_o graciousness_n there_o upon_o put_v only_o all_o his_o trust_n &_o confidence_n tarry_v for_o i_o here_o at_o the_o door_n say_v to_o desire_n god_n for_o i_o will_v go_v see_v what_o my_o lord_n do_v and_o tell_v he_o how_o thou_o be_v here_o to_o speak_v with_o &_o weep_v think_v always_o that_o now_o he_o be_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o this_o endless_a goodness_n who_o he_o have_v so_o oftentimes_o &_o so_o grievous_o offend_v what_o mean_v this_o qd_n our_o lord_n wherefore_o do_v thou_o come_v hither_o do_v thou_o not_o speak_v arise_v &_o let_v i_o know_v thy_o desire_n what_o can_v or_o shall_v i_o speak_v before_o thy_o incomprehensible_a brother_n but_o to_o what_o use_n serve_v this_o chain_n with_o a_o padlock_n hang_v at_o it_o this_o chain_n be_v call_v quoth_v she_o mediocrity_n and_o serve_v to_o chain_v up_o our_o door_n for_o but_o yet_o i_o will_v show_v thâ—â—_n a_o tree_n which_o stand_v in_o our_o barden_n desire_n be_v come_v into_o the_o garden_n and_o have_v see_v the_o tree_n do_v marvel_v great_o at_o the_o beauty_n thereof_o &_o chief_o because_o he_o carry_v two_o sundry_a sort_n of_o fruit_n inquire_v what_o they_o be_v for_o fruit_n the_o fruit_n which_o grow_v upon_o the_o low_a bough_n quoth_v she_o which_o be_v thus_o pale_a and_o without_o colour_n as_o thou_o see_v be_v call_v discoufidence_n in_o himself_o and_o those_o that_o grow_v upon_o the_o high_a branch_n which_o have_v a_o golden_a and_o vermilion_a hue_n be_v call_v confidence_n in_o god_n and_o this_o be_v the_o chief_a fruit_n that_o those_o must_v feed_v upon_o who_o do_v resort_v hither_o and_o if_o they_o eat_v not_o hereof_o all_o their_o labour_n be_v lose_v and_o in_o vain_a be_v their_o come_n into_o this_o place_n will_v you_o not_o give_v i_o some_o of_o these_o fruit_n towards_o my_o journey_n quoth_v desire_n most_o willing_o quoth_v she_o but_o first_o fill_v thy_o belly_n with_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o low_a bough_n and_o then_o thy_o pockette_n and_o sleeve_n with_o those_o that_o grow_v upon_o the_o high_a brannche_n to_o eat_v they_o by_o the_o way_n till_o thou_o come_v into_o the_o palace_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n desire_n be_v glad_a that_o he_o have_v eat_v with_o so_o good_a a_o stomach_n of_o the_o low_a fruit_n and_o have_v fill_v his_o belly_n with_o they_o and_o afterward_o do_v fill_v his_o sleeve_n bosom_n and_o pockette_n with_o the_o high_a fruit_n and_o say_v unto_o the_o dainsel_n i_o pray_v you_o show_v i_o the_o near_a and_o ready_a way_n which_o i_o must_v keep_v for_o to_o find_v out_o the_o love_n of_o god_n i_o be_o glad_a quoth_v that_o damsel_n that_o i_o see_v thou_o thus_o well_o furnish_v and_o provide_v for_o thy_o journey_n go_v to_o seek_v out_o the_o love_n of_o god_n yet_o i_o fear_v i_o if_o thou_o shall_v go_v alone_o that_o thou_o shall_v not_o find_v the_o right_a way_n therefore_o i_o will_v appoint_v thou_o some_o good_a company_n that_o shall_v conduct_v and_o bring_v thou_o in_o safety_n to_o thy_o journey_n end_n now_o quoth_v desire_n have_v i_o not_o company_n sufficient_a enough_o of_o my_o dog_n call_v good_a will_n no_o say_v she_o he_o will_v not_o suffice_v although_o he_o be_v twice_o better_o than_o he_o be_v for_o in_o the_o way_n there_o be_v not_o only_o a_o great_a company_n of_o thief_n murderer_n and_o robber_n who_o seize_v upon_o man_n and_o rob_v they_o but_o also_o many_o wild_a beast_n who_o do_v altogether_o denour_n they_o if_o they_o do_v catch_v they_o therefore_o it_o be_v good_a not_o to_o trust_v too_o much_o upon_o thy_o dog_n see_v it_o be_v so_o quoth_v he_o as_o you_o say_v show_v i_o so_o much_o favour_n as_o to_o appoint_v i_o such_o company_n as_o you_o think_v to_o be_v needful_a and_o meet_a for_o i_o lake_n therefore_o saidâ—_n she_o the_o porter_n with_o thou_o call_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n for_o he_o be_v a_o strong_a and_o valiant_a man_n and_o if_o thou_o will_v that_o he_o forsake_v thou_o not_o make_v much_o of_o his_o daughter_n call_v shamefastness_n and_o likewise_o if_o thou_o will_v not_o loose_v she_o keep_v this_o sweet_a powder_n always_o about_o thou_o called_z look_v down_o ward_n for_o she_o delight_v great_o in_o the_o smell_n thereof_o and_o the_o other_o who_o i_o do_v appoint_v thou_o be_v sincerity_n and_o so_o the_o lord_n be_v with_o thou_o and_o have_v thou_o in_o his_o keep_n but_o before_o thou_o go_v i_o must_v admonish_v &_o instruct_v thou_o of_o one_o thing_n which_o be_v if_o peradventure_o thou_o shall_v come_v to_o lose_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o sincerity_n at_o the_o least_o look_v well_o to_o thy_o dog_n for_o he_o shall_v find_v they_o out_o again_o and_o look_v that_o thou_o feed_v hun_z well_o with_o those_o fruit_n which_o thou_o have_v in_o thy_o pocket_n &_o about_o thou_o and_o when_o thou_o go_v hence_o take_v the_o way_n which_o lie_v on_o the_o left_a hand_n and_o there_o shall_v thou_o find_v a_o foot_n path_n which_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n no_o than_o the_o high_a way_n &_o will_v direct_o bring_v thou_o to_o the_o palace_n of_o love_n where_o the_o love_n of_o god_n dwell_v how_o be_v this_o foot-path_n call_v quoth_v desire_n that_o i_o may_v inquire_v of_o it_o if_o i_o happen_v to_o miss_v the_o way_n and_o come_v in_o the_o right_a path_n again_o it_o be_v call_v say_v she_o patience_z which_o be_v the_o near_a way_n to_o the_o palace_n of_o humility_n and_o likewise_o to_o that_o of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n the_o second_o part_n
of_o the_o treasure_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o first_o chapter_n intreat_v of_o patience_n desire_n part_v mere_o from_o the_o palace_n of_o humility_n have_v fill_v his_o belly_n with_o the_o sruâ—tes_n of_o the_o garden_n thereof_o and_o be_v well_o provide_v with_o good_a company_n namely_o with_o his_o dog_n goodwil_a and_o 〈◊〉_d his_o one_o side_n with_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o at_o the_o other_o with_o sincetitie_n and_o his_o pocket_n full_o beside_o with_o the_o fruit_n of_o to_o trust_v in_o god_n and_o although_o they_o have_v tell_v he_o that_o it_o be_v short_a and_o a_o great_a deal_n near_o than_o any_o other_o way_n yet_o notwithstanding_o do_v find_v it_o to_o be_v very_o hard_a and_o tedious_a full_a of_o stone_n hedge_n and_o thorn_n where_o upon_o he_o say_v to_o sincerity_n o_o good_a god_n how_o come_v this_o way_n so_o hard_a uneasy_a and_o todious_a i_o never_o will_v have_v think_v it_o that_o it_o can_v have_v be_v so_o maruaâ—le_v not_o qd_n sincerity_n for_o therefore_o it_o be_v call_v the_o way_n of_o patience_n and_o if_o it_o be_v not_o so_o full_a of_o stone_n prickle_n and_o thorn_n and_o not_o so_o troublesome_a to_o walk_v in_o it_o it_o shall_v not_o bear_v the_o name_n which_o it_o do_v and_o the_o house_n where_o it_o bring_v a_o man_n unto_o not_o of_o such_o a_o great_a estimation_n if_o the_o way_n be_v even_o and_o pleasant_a and_o every_o one_o can_v walk_v in_o it_o according_a to_o his_o own_o will_n and_o like_n but_o now_o none_o come_v thither_o before_o they_o be_v first_o well_o exercise_v in_o virtue_n for_o do_v thou_o not_o remember_v the_o common_a proverb_n there_o be_v no_o gain_n without_o pain_n no_o joy_n without_o annoy_n and_o see_v thou_o be_v now_o enter_v into_o it_o be_v of_o good_a cheer_n for_o it_o will_v not_o last_v long_o for_o thou_o know_v thou_o be_v who_o desire_v to_o fish_n must_v not_o fear_v the_o water_n and_o do_v thou_o think_v then_o to_o find_v so_o costly_a and_o precious_a a_o treasure_n as_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n without_o pain_n remember_v i_o pray_v thou_o what_o seneca_n say_v a_o rare_a and_o precious_a thing_n be_v not_o to_o be_v buy_v with_o small_a money_n beside_v the_o end_n of_o toil_n and_o labour_n be_v rest_n &_o quiet_a therefore_o it_o be_v a_o foolish_a thing_n but_o once_o to_o imagine_v that_o such_o a_o costly_a jewel_n can_v be_v get_v so_o easy_o at_o every_o man_n pleasure_n for_o if_o one_o can_v find_v the_o love_n of_o god_n so_o light_o he_o will_v be_v nothing_o esteem_v of_o because_o light_o get_v light_o forget_v therefore_o do_v thy_o best_a and_o let_v a_o small_a pain_n not_o annoy_v thou_o then_o afterward_o thou_o shall_v rest_v with_o the_o love_n of_o god_n rejoice_v and_o daily_a banquet_n with_o he_o and_o the_o great_a pain_n thou_o take_v now_o to_o find_v he_o the_o more_o will_v thou_o esteem_v of_o he_o and_o with_o great_a diligence_n will_v thou_o endeavour_n thyself_o to_o keep_v his_o favour_n and_o likewise_o how_o thy_o pain_n &_o travel_v which_o thou_o have_v take_v for_o he_o have_v be_v more_o tedious_a so_o much_o the_o great_a shall_v be_v thy_o joy_n comfort_n and_o pleasure_n again_o if_o thou_o feel_v thyself_o weak_a and_o almost_o ready_a to_o sound_v take_v a_o little_a of_o the_o fruit_n to_o trust_v in_o god_n which_o thou_o have_v about_o thou_o and_o it_o will_v renive_v thou_o again_o and_o if_o thou_o will_v not_o feel_v the_o tediousness_n of_o the_o way_n do_v as_o common_o all_o traveller_n do_v who_o with_o a_o song_n do_v lighten_v the_o tediousness_n of_o their_o journey_n sincerity_n word_n do_v please_v desire_n and_o say_v how_o be_v it_o possible_a that_o one_o shall_v sing_v in_o this_o old_a man_n company_n for_o common_o age_n be_v always_o repugnant_a to_o youthful_a action_n it_o be_v his_o custom_n quoth_v she_o to_o bear_v such_o grave_n and_o severe_a a_o countenance_n but_o otherwise_o he_o be_v very_o pleasant_a friendly_a and_o merry_a for_o he_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n only_a brother_n and_o delight_v in_o mirth_n but_o chief_o when_o we_o sing_v no_o vain_a light_n or_o worldly_a song_n how_o shall_v i_o begin_v to_o sing_v quoth_v desire_n see_v i_o have_v no_o voice_n at_o all_o it_o can_v be_v answer_v sincerity_n that_o thou_o shall_v not_o have_v any_o voice_n see_v that_o thou_o thyself_o be_v a_o voice_n desire_n do_v marvel_v because_o she_o say_v that_o he_o be_v a_o voice_n himself_o and_o ask_v how_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o it_o shall_v be_v so_o thou_o and_o all_o creature_n quoth_v she_o be_v create_v by_o the_o word_n of_o god_n &_o it_o be_v most_o manifest_a that_o soon_o after_o the_o word_n utter_v the_o voice_z followed_z and_o see_v that_o as_o soon_o as_o the_o lord_n have_v speak_v the_o word_n all_o creature_n be_v make_v and_o create_v it_o follow_v therefore_o that_o all_o creature_n be_v voice_n i_o pray_v you_o quoth_v desire_n to_o tell_v i_o this_o something_o more_o plain_a that_o i_o may_v conceive_v it_o willing_o answer_v sincerity_n the_o speech_n and_o the_o word_n be_v all_o one_o thing_n for_o the_o speech_n be_v not_o that_o which_o be_v utter_v by_o the_o mouth_n but_o it_o be_v the_o conceit_n of_o the_o mind_n &_o that_o which_o man_n speak_v with_o the_o mouth_n be_v the_o voice_n which_o utter_v and_o give_v to_o understand_v the_o speech_n the_o word_n and_o the_o inward_a conceit_n of_o the_o mind_n as_o for_o example_n when_o i_o do_v think_v with_o myself_o that_o thou_o be_v a_o man_n this_o be_v a_o word_n or_o speech_n although_o it_o lie_v hide_v wtin_n i_o now_o let_v we_o hear_v quoth_v desire_n see_v that_o i_o be_o a_o voice_n what_o kind_n of_o voice_n be_o i_o thou_o be_v answer_v sincerity_n a_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n who_o have_v create_v thou_o to_o honour_n laud_n and_o praise_v he_o but_o what_o do_v i_o say_v of_o myself_o as_o i_o be_o a_o voice_n qd_n desire_v through_o the_o good_a which_o thou_o have_v receive_v from_o god_n saâ—de_v she_o thou_o cry_v that_o god_n be_v good_a and_o bountiful_a &_o by_o the_o comeliness_n wherewith_o he_o have_v endue_v thou_o thou_o say_v that_o god_n be_v beautiful_a and_o so_o consequent_o all_o the_o wherewith_o god_n have_v endue_v thou_o be_v but_o a_o voice_n of_o he_o declare_v his_o bounty_n &_o goodness_n what_o reason_n have_v you_o qd_n desire_v to_o say_v that_o all_o wherewith_o god_n have_v adorn_v i_o be_v but_o a_o voice_n of_o he_o &_o say_v not_o general_o that_o all_o which_o i_o have_v in_o i_o be_v his_o voice_n because_o answer_v she_o the_o sin_n and_o wickedness_n which_o do_v remain_v in_o thou_o be_v not_o create_v of_o god_n &_o therefore_o they_o can_v he_o voice_n of_o the_o lord_n but_o well_o thy_o own_o declare_v that_o thou_o be_v vile_a wicked_a defile_v &_o unclean_a for_o as_o man_n may_v come_v by_o the_o creature_n to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n so_o likewise_o may_v he_o attain_v through_o the_o work_n proceed_v from_o himself_o to_o his_o own_o knowledge_n the_o second_o chapter_n declare_v the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n through_o his_o creature_n desire_v marvel_v as_o the_o lady_n grave_a countenance_n i_o although_o the_o seem_v to_o be_v but_o plain_a be_v notwithstanding_o very_o skilful_a and_o learned_a in_o all_o heavenly_a knowledge_n and_o say_v unto_o she_o wherefore_o will_v you_o have_v we_o to_o sing_v therefore_o quoth_v she_o because_o we_o may_v hereby_o somewhat_o forget_v the_o tediousness_n and_o pain_n of_o this_o vale_n of_o misery_n whereunto_o the_o remembrance_n and_o contemplation_n of_o god_n creature_n be_v likewise_o a_o great_a aid_n and_o furtherance_n and_o therefore_o have_v i_o place_v they_o in_o the_o way_n of_o patience_n for_o the_o soon_o shall_v thou_o come_v to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n if_o thou_o do_v exercise_v thy_o hart_n oftentimes_o in_o the_o book_n of_o the_o creation_n for_o through_o patience_n and_o the_o holy_a scripture_n whereof_o all_o the_o world_n be_v but_o a_o book_n we_o attain_v to_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n and_o be_v great_o comfort_v in_o a_o distress_a hope_n and_o if_o thou_o will_v learn_v to_o tune_v thy_o voice_n learn_v it_o of_o the_o creature_n for_o some_o of_o they_o declare_v his_o goodness_n some_o show_n his_o might_n some_o his_o wisdom_n some_o his_o excellency_n some_o his_o beauty_n some_o his_o mercy_n some_o his_o bounty_n and_o general_o all_o more_o or_o less_o sound_o forth_o his_o omnipotency_n that_o all_o in_o consideration_n hereof_o shall_v spread_v abroad_o his_o praise_n and_o glory_n therefore_o endeavour_n thyself_o to_o learn_v to_o sing_v here_o by_o the_o way_n for_o where_o thou_o
