He that loveth God loveth his children and keepeth his commandments 3 which to the faithful are light and not grievous 9 Jesus is the Son of God able to save us 14 and to bear our prayers which we make for our selves and for others WHosoever beleeveth that Jesus is the Christ is born of God and every one that loveth him that begat loveth him also that is begotten of him 2 By this we know that we love the children of God when we love God and keep his commandments 3 For this is the love of God that we keep his commandments and * Mat. 11.30 his commandments are not grievous 4 For whatsoever is born of God overcometh the world and this is the victory that overcometh the world even our faith 5 Who is he that overcometh the world but he that beleeveth that Jesus is the Son of God 6 This is he that came by water and bloud even Jesus Christ not by water onely but by water and bloud and it is the Spirit that beareth witness because the Spirit is truth 7 For there are three that bear record in heaven the Father the Word and the holy Ghost and these three are one 8 And there are three that bear witness in earth the spirit and the water and the bloud and these three agree in one 9 If we receive the witness of men the witness of God is greater for this is the witness of God which he hath testified of his Son 10 He that beleeveth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself he that beleeveth

VII 1 He proceedeth in exhorting them to purity of life 2 and to bear him like affection as he doth to them 3 Whereof lest he might seem to doubt he declareth what comfort he took in his afflictions by the report which Titus gave of their godly sorrow which his former epistle had wrought in th●m 13 and of their loving kindness and obedience towards Titus answerable to his former boastings of them HAving therefore these promises dearly beloved let us cleanse our selves from all filthiness of the flesh and spirit perfecting holiness in the fear of God 2 Receive us we have wronged no man we have corrupted no man we have defrauded no man 3 I speak not this to condemn you for I have said before that you are in our hearts to die and live with you 4 Great is my boldness of speech toward you great is my glorying of you I am filled with comfort I am exceeding joyful in all our tribulation 5 For when we were come into Macedonia our flesh had no rest but we were troubled on every side without were fightings within were fears 6 Nevertheless God that comforteth those that are cast down comforted us by the coming of Titus 7 And not by his coming onely but by the consolation wherewith he was comforted in you when he told us your earnest desire your mourning your fervent minde toward me so that I rejoyced the more 8 For though I made you sorry with a letter I do not repent though I did repent for I perceive that the same epistle made you sorry though it were but for a season 9 Now I rejoyce not that you were made sorry but that ye sorrowed to repentance for ye were made sorry ‖ Or according to God after a godly manner that you might receive damage by us in nothing 10 For godly sorrow worketh repentance

VIII 1 He stirreth them up to a liberal contribution for the poor saints at Jerusalem by the example of the Macedonians 7 by commendation of their former forwardness 9 by the example of Christ 14 and by the spiritual profit that shall redound to themselves thereby 16 commending to them the integrity and willingness of Titus and those other brethren who upon his request exhortation and commendation were purposely come to them for this business MOreover brethren we do you to wit of the grace of God bestowed on the churches of Macedonia 2 How that in a great trial of affliction the abundance of their joy their deep poverty abounded unto the riches of their liberality 3 For to their power I bear record yea and beyond their power they were willing of themselves 4 Praying us with much intreaty that we would receive the gift and take upon us the fellowship of the ministring to the saints 5 And this they did not as we hoped but first gave their own selves to the Lord and unto us by the will of God 6 Insomuch that we desired Titus that as he had begun so he would also finish in you the same grace also 7 Therefore as ye abound in every thing in faith in utterance and knowledge and in all diligence and in your love to us see that ye abound in this grace also 8 I speak not by commandment but by occasion of the forwardness of others and to prove the sincerity of your love 9 For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ that though he was rich yet for your sakes he became poor that ye through his poverty might be rich 10 And herein I give my advice for this is expedient for you who have begun before not onely to do but also to be † Gr. willing forward a year ago 11 Now therefore perform the doing of it that as there was a readiness to will so there may be a performance also out of that which you have 12 For it there be first a willing minde it is accepted according to that a man hath and not according to that he hath not 13 For I mean not that other men be eased and you burdened 14 But by an equality that now at this time your abundance may be a supply for their want that their abundance also may be a supply for your want that there may be equality 15 As it is written * Exod. 16.18 He that had gathered much had nothing over and he that had gathered little had no lack 16 But thanks be to God which put the same earnest care into the heart of Titus for you 17 For indeed he accepted the exhortation but being more forward of his own accord he went unto you 18 And we have lent with him the brother whose praise is in the gospel throughout all the churches 19 And not that onely but who was also chosen of the churches to travel with us with this ‖ Or gift grace which is administred by us to the glory of the same Lord and declaration of your ready minde 20 Avoiding this that no man should blame us in this abundance which is administred by us 21 Providing for honest things not onely in the sight of the Lord but also in the sight of men 22 And we have sent with them our brother whom we have oftentimes proved diligent in many things but now much more diligent upon the great confidence which ‖ Or he hath I have in you 23 Whether any do enquire of Titus he is my partner and fellow-helper concerning you or our brethren be enquired of they are the messengers of the churches and the glory of Christ 24 Wherefore shew ye to them and before the churches the proof of your love and of our boasting on your behalf CHAP. IX 1 He yeeldeth the reason why though he knew their forwardness yet he sent Titus and his brethren beforehand 6 And he proceedeth in stirring them up to a bountiful alms as being but a kinde of sowing of seed 10 which shall return a great increase to them 13 and occasion a great sacrifice of thanksgivings unto God FOr as touching the ministring to the saints it is superfluous for me to write to you 2 For I know the forwardness of your minde for which I boast of you to them of Macedonia that Achaia was ready a year ago and your zeal hath provoked very many 3 Yet have I sent the brethren lest our boasting of you should be in vain in this behalf that as I said ye may be ready 4 Lest haply if they of Macedonia come with me and finde you unprepared we that we say not you should be ashamed in this same confident boasting 5 Therefore I thought it necessary to exhort the brethren that they would go before unto you and make up beforehand your † Gr. blessing bounty ‖ Or which hath been so much spoken of before whereof ye had notice before that the same might be ready as a matter of bounty and not as of covetousness 6 But this I say He which soweth sparingly shall reap also sparingly and he which soweth bountifully shall reap also bountifully 7 Every man according as he purposeth in his heart so let him give not grudgingly or of necessity for * Prov. 11.25 Rom. 12.8 Ecclus 35.9 God loveth a cheerful giver 8 And God is able to make all grace abound towards you that ye always having all sufficiency in all things may abound to every good work 9 As it is written * Psal 112.9 He hath dispersed abroad he hath given to to the poor his righteousness remaineth for ever 10 Now he that * Is 35.10 ministr●th seed to the sower both minister
