bring_v thou_o out_o of_o conceit_n of_o thy_o own_o righteousness_n to_o chase_v thou_o to_o his_o christ_n for_o expiation_n and_o to_o the_o holy_a ghost_n for_o mortification_n of_o corruption_n to_o exercise_v thou_o in_o prayer_n and_o in_o thy_o christian_a warfare_n be_v it_o not_o for_o this_o we_o will_v not_o so_o often_o and_o so_o full_o feel_v the_o necessity_n and_o sweetness_n of_o christ_n suffering_n intercession_n and_o righteousness_n we_o will_v not_o make_v so_o much_o of_o the_o sanctify_a subdue_a power_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n nor_o have_v so_o oft_o recourse_n unto_o it_o where_o will_v be_v the_o exercise_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o patience_n about_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o promise_n of_o sanctification_n what_o will_v stir_v we_o up_o to_o fervent_a and_o sincere_a prayer_n where_o shall_v be_v the_o matter_n of_o our_o christian_a warfare_n obj._n i_o do_v not_o find_v the_o hatred_n and_o loathe_n of_o sin_n and_o this_o do_v puzzle_v i_o in_o this_o point_n i_o find_v indeed_o that_o i_o do_v not_o entertain_v it_o but_o i_o think_v it_o to_o be_v more_o out_o of_o fear_n of_o punishment_n than_o out_o of_o hatred_n of_o sin_n a._n do_v not_o thy_o heart_n rise_v against_o sin_n even_o in_o other_o to_o who_o sin_n thou_o be_v not_o accessary_a which_o can_v flow_v from_o fear_n but_o from_o hatred_n yea_o do_v thou_o not_o hate_v those_o who_o be_v profain_o and_o wicked_a although_o they_o have_v other_o recommend_v and_o insinuate_a part_n as_o on_o the_o contrary_a thou_o love_v those_o who_o be_v good_a and_o holy_a say_v not_o then_o that_o thou_o be_v altogether_o void_a of_o this_o point_n of_o the_o hatred_n of_o sin_n further_o though_o we_o find_v not_o all_o that_o we_o will_v have_v yet_o shall_v not_o we_o fail_v to_o be_v both_o thankful_a and_o encourage_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o thing_n that_o we_o find_v the_o lord_n give_v we_o to_o find_v many_o thing_n that_o we_o may_v be_v exercise_v in_o thankfulness_n and_o to_o miss_v some_o thing_n that_o we_o may_v be_v exercise_v in_o prayer_n pray_v then_o that_o the_o lord_n more_o and_o more_o will_v make_v thou_o partaker_n of_o his_o divine_a nature_n and_o of_o his_o holiness_n that_o so_o the_o hatred_n of_o sin_n may_v grow_v more_o and_o more_o sensible_a in_o you_o for_o he_o be_v of_o pure_a eye_n than_o that_o he_o can_v behold_v iniquity_n hab._n 1.13_o he_o love_v righteousness_n and_o hate_v wickedness_n psa_n 55.7_o a_o four_o mark_v faith_n work_v by_o love_n wherefore_o observe_v two_o thing_n of_o faith_n 1._o element_n find_v not_o quietness_n in_o his_o mind_n unless_o he_o be_v sometime_o work_v and_o well_o employ_v faith_n ever_o work_v towards_o god_n i_o mean_v immediate_o for_o all_o our_o work_n be_v to_o he_o as_o to_o our_o last_o end_n in_o be_v about_o the_o point_n of_o his_o worship_n in_o obey_v his_o acceptable_a will_n in_o glorify_v his_o name_n advance_v his_o kingdom_n see_v to_o the_o do_v of_o his_o will_n by_o other_o so_o far_o as_o opportunity_n and_o our_o calling_n permit_v sometime_o towards_o ourselves_o in_o that_o great_a work_n of_o our_o salvation_n sometime_o towards_o our_o neighbour_n in_o the_o work_n of_o charity_n yea_o of_o spiritual_a charity_n so_o necessary_a and_o so_o often_o recommend_v exhort_v instruct_v edify_v comfort_n admonish_v one_o another_o and_o yet_o neglect_v much_o want_n of_o compassion_n to_o the_o poor_a soul_n so_o their_o faith_n be_v ever_o work_v which_o clear_o cut_v off_o those_o who_o please_v themselves_o that_o they_o abstain_v from_o ill_a yea_o from_o some_o few_o gross_a ill_n that_o they_o be_v no_o thief_n murderer_n adulterer_n etc._n etc._n although_o they_o never_o do_v a_o good_a deed_n not_o remember_v the_o doom_n of_o the_o unfruitful_a tree_n and_o unprofitable_a servant_n but_o second_o as_o it_o work_v so_o it_o work_v by_o love_n there_o be_v much_o work_n upon_o wrong_a motive_n which_o be_v all_o lose_a labour_n like_o build_v without_o a_o foundation_n there_o be_v nothing_o we_o shall_v look_v more_o unto_o then_o this_o what_o be_v the_o motive_n of_o our_o obedience_n for_o it_o be_v the_o thing_n the_o lord_n look_v most_o unto_o he_o ponder_v the_o heart_n yea_o do_v not_o man_n so_o also_o if_o he_o can_v know_v it_o now_o the_o motive_n most_o acceptable_a to_o render_v unto_o his_o commandment_n to_o flow_v from_o love_n this_o be_v also_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n even_o the_o way_n of_o love_n and_o the_o command_v thereof_o be_v rather_o request_n of_o adoption_n instead_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n goon_n then_o to_o believe_v for_o thou_o both_o master_n &_o shall_v have_v the_o fear_n of_o god_n thus_o in_o thy_o heart_n and_o be_v stratagem_n that_o those_o who_o have_v no_o interest_n in_o the_o promise_n as_o be_v void_a both_o of_o fear_n and_o obedience_n these_o i_o say_v he_o puff_v up_o with_o presumption_n and_o make_v they_o bold_o to_o claim_v and_o lean_a to_o that_o wherein_o they_o have_v no_o right_n as_o long_o as_o a_o man_n make_v no_o conscience_n of_o his_o way_n he_o let_v he_o believe_v his_o fill_n such_o a_o belief_n as_o it_o be_v when_o indeed_o he_o shall_v not_o lay_v hold_n nor_o claim_v to_o the_o promise_n as_o be_v clear_a by_o that_o psal_n 50.16_o 17._o but_o unto_o the_o wicked_a god_n say_v what_o have_v thou_o to_o do_v to_o take_v my_o covenant_n in_o thy_o mouth_n see_v thou_o hate_v instruction_n and_o cast_v my_o word_n behind_o thou_o when_o a_o man_n again_o have_v that_o walk_v in_o darkness_n and_o have_v no_o light_n let_v he_o trust_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o stay_v upon_o his_o god_n here_o be_v a_o clear_a warrant_n and_o a_o sweet_a invitation_n for_o a_o person_n in_o such_o a_o case_n to_o believe_v and_o lay_v hold_v and_o yet_o i_o say_v no_o soon_o fare_v it_o thus_o with_o a_o man_n but_o satan_n and_o his_o own_o corruption_n incontinent_o bear_v he_o back_o from_o believe_v observe_v this_o then_o and_o resist_v the_o devil_n and_o the_o corruption_n of_o infidelity_n that_o be_v in_o thy_o own_o heart_n &_o bear_v back_o no_o long_o if_o bear_v back_o and_o withdraw_a be_v a_o allowable_a cause_n for_o thou_o in_o such_o a_o course_n thy_o heart_n will_v not_o be_v so_o much_o give_v unto_o it_o we_o when_o thou_o shall_v not_o now_o this_o way_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n be_v clear_o wrong_v so_o now_o the_o way_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n be_v to_o misdoubt_v and_o draw_v back_o why_o shall_v thou_o not_o suspect_v it_o and_o resist_v it_o hold_v to_o thy_o comfortable_a warrant_n thou_o fear_v the_o lord_n at_o least_o thou_o desire_v to_o fear_v his_o name_n for_o even_o to_o such_o the_o scripture_n allow_v comfort_n thou_o obeye_v the_o voice_n of_o his_o servant_n or_o be_v willing_a to_o obey_v so_o far_o as_o thou_o be_v able_a then_o obey_v this_o also_o trust_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o go_v on_o in_o a_o constant_a course_n of_o fear_n and_o obedience_n and_o fear_v not_o to_o believe_v this_o be_v the_o lord_n seal_v to_o depart_v from_o iniquity_n make_v your_o call_n from_o faith_n to_o faith_n and_o from_o grace_n to_o grace_n so_o from_o humiliation_n to_o humiliation_n moreover_o the_o work_n of_o humiliation_n namely_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o sight_n and_o sense_n of_o our_o own_o guiltiness_n and_o deserve_n be_v the_o very_a groundwork_n of_o the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n and_o sanctification_n and_o therefore_o shall_v be_v well_o lay_v great_o labour_v for_o and_o we_o shall_v strive_v to_o have_v it_o deep_o seat_v and_o stamp_v in_o our_o heart_n and_o memory_n for_o as_o any_o may_v feel_v by_o experience_n according_a to_o the_o edge_n upon_o our_o love_n and_o consequent_o upon_o our_o godly_a sorrow_n our_o zeal_n our_o obedience_n etc._n etc._n for_o then_o do_v we_o love_v most_o when_o we_o be_v most_o sensible_a how_o much_o be_v forgive_v we_o so_o great_a be_v the_o consequent_n of_o this_o point_n so_o then_o i_o say_v what_o i_o have_v speak_v for_o your_o comfort_n in_o this_o point_n be_v not_o that_o i_o will_v have_v you_o rest_v altogether_o upon_o the_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n already_o acknowledge_v by_o you_o only_o this_o i_o will_v not_o have_v it_o hide_v from_o your_o eye_n what_o you_o have_v receive_v but_o that_o you_o shall_v see_v it_o and_o acknowledge_v it_o that_o the_o lord_n may_v not_o want_v his_o thankfulness_n nor_o you_o your_o comfort_n and_o that_o satan_n may_v physician_n but_o these_o that_o be_v sick_a and_o â—ee_o their_o spiritual_a sickness_n thou_o be_v one_o who_o christ_n call_v i_o come_v not_o to_o call_v the_o righteous_a in_o their_o own_o eye_n but_o sinner_n to_o repentance_n that_o be_v that_o see_v themselves_o to_o be_v sinner_n be_v of_o good_a comfort_n behold_v he_o call_v thou_o 2._o have_v thou_o get_v a_o sight_n of_o thy_o own_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n before_o the_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n the_o lord_n he_o first_o put_v his_o fear_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o these_o in_o who_o he_o work_v effectual_o by_o his_o spirit_n even_o the_o fear_n of_o his_o justice_n for_o otherways_o they_o will_v never_o prize_v his_o mercy_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o son_n they_o will_v never_o be_v humble_v for_o bypass_a sin_n to_o fly_v to_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o merit_n of_o christ_n for_o forgiveness_n and_o so_o can_v not_o be_v save_v according_a to_o that_o come_v unto_o i_o all_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o heavy_a lade_v as_o also_o that_o no_o man_n can_v come_v unto_o i_o unless_o the_o father_n draw_v he_o and_o also_o they_o will_v not_o stand_v in_o awe_n for_o time_n to_o come_v which_o be_v the_o other_o main_a end_n why_o the_o lord_n work_v this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n and_o fear_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n according_a to_o that_o i_o will_v put_v my_o fear_n in_o their_o heart_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o depart_v from_o i_o see_v then_o if_o you_o have_v this_o fear_n which_o be_v a_o point_n of_o the_o covenant_n and_o so_o a_o token_n that_o one_o be_v in_o the_o covenant_n bless_a be_v the_o man_n that_o fear_v always_o but_o take_v heed_n that_o it_o be_v the_o true_a and_o constant_a fear_n of_o god_n speak_v of_o and_o promise_v in_o the_o covenant_n for_o even_o a_o wicked_a man_n may_v have_v some_o fear_n of_o commit_v sin_n and_o yet_o not_o the_o right_a fear_n now_o try_v it_o by_o the_o two_o mark_n in_o the_o word_n of_o the_o covenant_n 1._o if_o it_o be_v god_n fear_n i_o will_v put_v my_o fear_n 2._o if_o it_o be_v the_o constant_a fear_n of_o god_n and_o they_o shall_v not_o depart_v from_o i_o the_o wicked_a man_n i_o say_v he_o may_v judgement_n be_v over_o he_o go_v to_o his_o wont_a sin_n so_o do_v pharaoh_n and_o jereboam_n thus_o he_o fear_v not_o always_o and_o so_o be_v not_o bless_v he_o have_v not_o get_v the_o lord_n fear_v as_o never_o to_o depart_v from_o he_o and_o so_o be_v not_o in_o the_o covenant_n but_o see_v thou_o if_o thy_o judgement_n and_o affliction_n not_o only_o while_o they_o be_v lie_v on_o but_o even_o afterward_o they_o have_v bring_v forth_o the_o quiet_a fruit_n of_o righteousness_n but_o that_o this_o mark_n may_v be_v the_o more_o clear_a comfort_v and_o convince_a we_o will_v lay_v it_o out_o in_o the_o particular_n to_o wit_n their_o fear_n who_o have_v the_o true_a fear_n and_o withal_o let_v you_o see_v the_o quite_o contrary_a in_o the_o wicked_a and_o that_o both_o from_o scripture_n 1._o they_o who_o have_v this_o true_a fear_n they_o fear_v god_n justice_n and_o anger_n against_o sin_n as_o be_v clear_a lord_n enter_v not_o into_o judgement_n with_o thy_o servant_n not_o god_n at_o all_o according_a to_o a_o notable_a place_n psal_n 36._o who_o if_o they_o be_v not_o strange_o besot_v and_o blind_v may_v see_v that_o they_o be_v wrong_v when_o even_o other_o see_v it_o the_o transgression_n of_o the_o wicked_a say_v in_o my_o heart_n that_o there_o be_v no_o fear_n of_o god_n before_o his_o eye_n etc._n etc._n look_v and_o consider_v the_o place_n 2._o they_o fear_v not_o god_n justice_n and_o anger_n they_o never_o get_v a_o sensible_a and_o serious_a thought_n of_o his_o justice_n before_o their_o eye_n but_o think_v he_o be_v all_o mercy_n and_o that_o therefore_o if_o they_o shall_v sin_v all_o their_o life_n time_n and_o yet_o but_o at_o the_o very_a last_o bid_v the_o lord_n have_v mercy_n on_o they_o that_o that_o will_v serve_v their_o turn_n whereas_o god_n child_n howsoever_o sometime_o they_o have_v have_v the_o like_a apprehension_n see_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o justice_n and_o holiness_n and_o that_o in_o such_o a_o sort_n as_o that_o hardly_o can_v they_o get_v a_o glimpse_n or_o glance_n of_o his_o mercy_n 3._o they_o fear_v not_o the_o lord_n threaten_n tremble_v not_o at_o his_o word_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a deut._n glory_n they_o think_v they_o have_v enough_o of_o the_o one_o and_o that_o they_o be_v sure_a enough_o of_o the_o other_o the_o godly_a and_o waken_v be_v not_o so_o lord_n give_v i_o the_o light_n of_o thy_o countenance_n they_o take_v care_n for_o the_o one_o thing_n necessary_a give_v they_o their_o wish_n and_o desire_n it_o will_v be_v grace_n and_o not_o good_n 2._o if_o they_o have_v any_o care_n or_o desire_v this_o way_n they_o be_v 1._o but_o sluggish_a desire_n and_o not_o diligent_a they_o may_v wish_v and_o will_v with_o balaam_n their_o salvation_n but_o they_o do_v not_o thou_o have_v carry_v and_o do_v carry_v thyself_o in_o the_o other_o point_n of_o sobriety_n in_o thy_o drink_n in_o thy_o eat_n a_o point_n certain_o that_o many_o fail_v in_o and_o few_o consider_v yea_o and_o in_o thy_o wear_n consider_v the_o eight_o command_n and_o see_v if_o perhaps_o thou_o have_v not_o wrong_v thy_o neighbour_n in_o his_o good_n but_o how_o have_v thou_o employ_v thy_o own_o how_o will_v thou_o clear_v thy_o account_n to_o he_o who_o will_v take_v account_n of_o the_o talent_n he_o have_v commit_v to_o thou_o have_v thou_o not_o spend_v much_o superfluous_o and_o unnecessary_o when_o the_o member_n of_o jesus_n christ_n have_v be_v like_a to_o starve_v for_o want_v look_v to_o the_o nine_o command_n which_o forbid_v thou_o to_o speak_v to_o the_o disgrace_n the_o knowledge_n and_o discovery_n of_o sin_n then_o in_o the_o second_o place_n apply_v the_o threaten_n and_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n to_o yourself_o for_o your_o humiliation_n and_o to_o this_o end_n consider_v the_o severity_n and_o greatness_n of_o they_o the_o universality_n and_o extent_n of_o they_o they_o be_v certain_o exceed_v great_a and_o fearful_a they_o extend_v to_o the_o body_n to_o the_o mind_n to_o the_o temporal_a and_o spiritual_a care_n of_o a_o man_n to_o this_o life_n and_o to_o the_o life_n to_o come_v and_o they_o be_v very_o fearful_a in_o all_o these_o respect_n consider_v chief_o the_o universality_n of_o these_o threaten_n in_o regard_n of_o their_o object_n every_o one_o great_a and_o small_a young_a and_o old_a he_o or_o she_o be_v liable_a to_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n we_o shall_v consider_v this_o for_o we_o be_v exceed_o prone_a to_o make_v a_o exception_n and_o to_o bless_v ourselves_o in_o our_o heart_n when_o god_n curse_n and_o to_o slip_v the_o choler_n but_o what_o say_v the_o scripture_n curse_v be_v every_o one_o that_o abide_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n etc._n etc._n and_o tribulation_n and_o anguish_n be_v on_o every_o soul_n that_o dâ—th_v evil_a etc._n etc._n we_o shall_v also_o consider_v the_o truth_n of_o he_o that_o have_v pronounce_v these_o threaten_n even_o god_n that_o can_v lie_v heaven_n and_o earth_n shall_v heart_n do_v it_o like_o those_o of_o who_o the_o prophet_n jeremy_n speak_v chap._n 5.12_o they_o have_v boly_v the_o lord_n say_v he_o and_o say_v this_o evil_n shall_v not_o come_v upon_o we_o what_o else_o do_v they_o that_o walk_v in_o their_o sin_n and_o yet_o think_v that_o the_o threaten_n of_o the_o law_n shall_v not_o overtake_v they_o but_o even_o give_v the_o lord_n the_o lie_n and_o again_o although_o the_o threaten_n and_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n be_v so_o general_a and_o univerfall_v as_o you_o may_v see_v deut._n 29._o the_o lord_n fore-sets_a that_o there_o shall_v and_o drink_v and_o rail_v and_o break_v the_o sabbath_n secure_o and_o yet_o nevertheless_o bless_v themselves_o in_o their_o own_o heart_n &_o think_v that_o no_o such_o thing_n shall_v overtake_v they_o all_o secure_a sinner_n be_v of_o this_o sort_n o_o but_o what_o say_v the_o lord_n to_o such_o a_o soul_n the_o lord_n will_v not_o spare_v he_o but_o the_o anger_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o their_o mind_n etc._n etc._n yet_o they_o conceive_v not_o they_o consider_v not_o that_o it_o be_v by_o virtue_n of_o the_o lord_n threaten_n that_o this_o come_v upon_o they_o so_o to_o humble_v themselves_o under_o the_o mighty_a hand_n of_o god_n this_o the_o prophet_n jeremy_n chap._n 5._o set_n down_o to_o have_v be_v the_o senseless_a condition_n of_o the_o people_n of_o his_o time_n thou_o have_v strike_v they_o but_o they_o have_v not_o grieve_v thou_o have_v confume_v they_o but_o they_o have_v not_o receive_v correction_n and_o he_o conclude_v sure_o they_o be_v poor_a they_o be_v foolish_a they_o know_v not_o the_o way_n of_o the_o lord_n nor_o the_o judgement_n of_o their_o god_n this_o be_v a_o lamentable_a case_n and_o yet_o a_o common_a case_n we_o shall_v pray_v the_o lord_n to_o save_v we_o from_o this_o senselessness_n they_o be_v happy_a that_o when_o adversity_n come_v upon_o they_o get_v grace_n from_o god_n to_o acknowledge_v it_o to_o be_v for_o their_o sin_n and_o so_o humble_a themselves_o and_o be_v not_o condemn_v with_o the_o wicked_a world_n for_o so_o they_o prevent_v the_o wrath_n which_o be_v to_o come_v but_o happy_a be_v we_o if_o we_o will_v believe_v god_n threaten_n without_o feeling_n of_o they_o for_o than_o we_o shall_v prevent_v affliction_n also_o will_v we_o judge_v ourselves_o we_o shall_v not_o be_v judge_v etc._n etc._n now_o there_o be_v two_o thing_n especial_o that_o stand_v in_o the_o way_n and_o hinder_v the_o threaten_n of_o god_n law_n from_o have_v their_o due_a operation_n upon_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n and_o woman_n and_o make_v man_n and_o woman_n to_o be_v secure_a notwithstanding_o of_o the_o peremptory_a threaten_n of_o the_o law_n and_o i_o beseech_v you_o take_v heed_n unto_o they_o that_o you_o be_v not_o also_o lull_v
sanctify_v the_o sabbath_n as_o it_o ought_v or_o take_v pain_n in_o private_a exercise_n of_o devotion_n why_o these_o control_n their_o pleasure_n and_o laziness_n how_o few_o be_v charitable_a why_o this_o control_v their_o profit_n how_o few_o will_v suffer_v or_o sit_v down_o with_o a_o wrong_n without_o repay_v though_o the_o scripture_n be_v most_o express_a o_o this_o touch_v they_o in_o their_o great_a idol_n their_o credit_n and_o for_o this_o same_o reason_n how_o many_o decline_v good_a duty_n not_o make_v their_o light_a shine_n before_o man_n he_o that_o be_v ashamed_a of_o i_o before_o man_n etc._n etc._n all_o this_o be_v against_o the_o rule_n then_o shall_v i_o not_o be_v ashamed_a when_o i_o have_v respect_n to_o all_o thy_o commandment_n 4._o he_o who_o obedience_n be_v sound_a make_v conscience_n not_o only_o of_o the_o do_v of_o a_o duty_n but_o also_o of_o the_o manner_n of_o the_o do_v of_o it_o and_o be_v humble_v for_o his_o fail_n in_o the_o manner_n as_o well_o as_o for_o the_o omission_n but_o the_o hypocrite_n so_o he_o do_v the_o duty_n he_o regard_v not_o the_o manner_n he_o care_v not_o for_o it_o so_o he_o pray_v hear_v read_v he_o rest_v there_o but_o care_v not_o to_o do_v all_o these_o with_o that_o reverence_n cheerfulness_n diligence_n humility_n sincerity_n which_o the_o lord_n require_v in_o the_o discharge_n of_o his_o worship_n he_o remember_v not_o the_o rule_n the_o way_n of_o a_o man_n seem_v good_a in_o his_o own_o eye_n but_o the_o lord_n ponder_v the_o heart_n but_o especial_o in_o the_o manner_n of_o our_o obedience_n we_o shall_v look_v to_o the_o motive_n and_o end_n of_o our_o obedience_n to_o that_o which_o put_v we_o on_o to_o do_v it_o and_o which_o we_o set_v before_o our_o eye_n that_o it_o be_v not_o a_o wrong_a motive_n but_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n yea_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o end_n to_o please_v god_n and_o not_o ourselves_o or_o other_o but_o of_o this_o hereafter_o a_o second_o mark_v of_o faith_n be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n child_n by_o this_o we_o know_v that_o we_o be_v translate_v from_o death_n to_o life_n if_o we_o love_v the_o brethren_n and_o if_o it_o be_v a_o real_a love_n hereby_o we_o assure_v ourselves_o before_o he_o david_n say_v all_o his_o delight_n be_v this_o way_n this_o be_v a_o mark_n which_o have_v uphold_v many_o when_o they_o have_v be_v at_o a_o very_a low_a ebb_n and_o when_o other_o mark_n have_v not_o be_v sensible_a to_o they_o those_o who_o be_v true_o renew_v they_o have_v this_o wrought_v in_o their_o heart_n by_o god_n spirit_n a_o secret_a disposition_n to_o love_v goodness_n and_o those_o who_o be_v good_a a_o evident_a token_n they_o be_v in_o some_o measure_n so_o themselves_o for_o like_a love_v like_a so_o they_o love_v those_o who_o be_v holy_a and_o the_o more_o holy_a they_o love_v they_o the_o better_a they_o love_v they_o yea_o they_o more_o account_n of_o a_o spark_n of_o holiness_n than_o all_o other_o natural_a accomplishment_n whereas_o the_o wicked_a though_o they_o may_v carry_v a_o fair_a show_n to_o the_o godly_a yet_o indeed_o they_o hate_v they_o they_o be_v thorn_n in_o their_o eye_n now_o this_o mark_n shall_v be_v right_o consider_v lest_o any_o that_o have_v not_o interest_n shall_v deceive_v themselves_o and_o lie_v hold_v of_o it_o one_o may_v love_v some_o good_a man_n because_o they_o have_v be_v some_o way_n oblige_v to_o they_o but_o see_v if_o thou_o love_v all_o goodness_n and_o all_o good_a man_n yea_o those_o who_o thou_o never_o know_v but_o by_o report_n 2._o one_o may_v love_v good_a man_n because_o of_o their_o natural_a and_o moral_a endowment_n as_o kindness_n courtesy_n wisdom_n affability_n etc._n etc._n but_o look_v if_o thou_o love_v they_o for_o their_o piety_n and_o holiness_n look_v if_o thou_o love_v holiness_n where_o it_o want_v there_o natural_a and_o moral_a endowment_n and_o recommendation_n if_o thou_o love_v not_o only_o a_o wise_a good_a man_n but_o even_o also_o a_o simple_a good_a man_n not_o only_o a_o good_a man_n of_o some_o place_n and_o reputation_n in_o the_o world_n but_o even_o also_o a_o mean_a good_a man_n and_o the_o like_a yea_o look_v if_o thou_o love_v holiness_n &_o goodness_n not_o only_a when_o and_o where_o it_o be_v without_o the_o advantage_n of_o natural_a accomplishment_n but_o even_o also_o where_o it_o have_v great_a disadvantage_n in_o regard_n of_o these_o as_o when_o a_o man_n want_v that_o measure_n of_o natural_a wisdom_n that_o be_v requisite_a perhaps_o to_o have_v through_o the_o weakness_n of_o his_o mind_n and_o want_v that_o measure_n of_o affability_n and_o amiableness_n that_o be_v requisite_a through_o the_o natural_a temper_n of_o his_o body_n look_v i_o say_v if_o in_o such_o a_o case_n thou_o love_v his_o goodness_n piety_n and_o holiness_n and_o not_o take_v prejudice_n against_o it_o but_o be_v such_o a_o one_o who_o do_v love_v and_o honour_v they_o that_o fear_v the_o lord_n this_o mark_n in_o the_o psalm_n be_v set_v down_o somewhat_o different_o we_o must_v try_v ourselves_o by_o this_o it_o be_v true_a great_a man_n must_v have_v the_o outward_a respect_n their_o place_n speak_v honour_n to_o who_o honour_n but_o for_o the_o inward_a respect_n of_o the_o heart_n we_o shall_v see_v whether_o greatness_n or_o goodness_n carry_v it_o away_o certain_o those_o who_o have_v get_v their_o judgement_n rectify_v and_o renew_v to_o discern_v thing_n that_o differ_v or_o have_v their_o heart_n set_v upon_o the_o pursuit_n of_o grace_n will_v esteem_v more_o of_o it_o where_o it_o be_v then_o of_o all_o the_o greatness_n in_o the_o world_n a_o three_o mark_n be_v this_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n which_o may_v carry_v with_o it_o a_o double_a meaning_n to_o wit_n either_o this_o that_o whereas_o the_o hypocrite_n look_v only_o to_o the_o outward_a man_n but_o not_o to_o the_o hide_a man_n of_o the_o heart_n true_a faith_n it_o do_v far_o otherways_o for_o know_v that_o it_o have_v to_o do_v with_o the_o alseeing_a god_n the_o tryer_n of_o the_o heart_n and_o the_o searcher_n of_o the_o reins_n he_o strive_v to_o keep_v clean_o his_o heart_n and_o to_o take_v heed_n to_o the_o thought_n of_o his_o heart_n aswell_o as_o to_o his_o outward_a action_n every_o one_o that_o have_v this_o hope_n purify_v himself_o but_o second_o this_o be_v not_o all_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n that_o be_v make_v a_o man_n not_o only_o make_v conscience_n of_o the_o thought_n and_o disposition_n of_o his_o heart_n to_o purify_v they_o but_o even_o also_o help_v he_o to_o purify_v it_o and_o purge_v it_o from_o the_o several_a corruption_n of_o it_o for_o through_o faith_n we_o get_v victory_n over_o all_o corruption_n this_o be_v our_o victory_n even_o our_o faith_n &_o by_o it_o we_o draw_v virtue_n from_o christ_n to_o cure_v our_o corruption_n so_o that_o faith_n by_o little_a and_o little_a purge_v the_o heart_n throughout_o obj._n o_o then_o i_o can_v have_v faith_n for_o i_o find_v my_o heart_n swarm_v with_o wicked_a and_o impure_a thought_n many_o great_a and_o gross_a corruption_n and_o some_o of_o they_o very_o strong_a and_o indeed_o predominant_a a._n 1._o that_o thy_o heart_n as_o thou_o think_v be_v so_o full_a of_o corruption_n be_v not_o that_o thy_o heart_n be_v more_o impure_a than_o other_o but_o that_o thou_o have_v a_o clear_a light_n and_o better_a sight_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o thy_o own_o heart_n than_o other_o have_v thy_o heart_n be_v once_o more_o unclean_a when_o thou_o see_v it_o not_o '_o to_o be_v so_o now_o when_o thou_o see_v these_o small_a moat_n it_o be_v a_o token_n the_o sun_n of_o righteousness_n have_v shine_v upon_o thou_o 2._o that_o faith_n purify_v the_o heart_n must_v be_v right_o understand_v for_o the_o meaning_n be_v not_o that_o faith_n do_v altogether_o purge_v and_o free_a the_o heart_n from_o sin_n who_o can_v say_v his_o heart_n be_v clean_a but_o this_o faith_n put_v a_o clean_a purify_n disposition_n into_o the_o heart_n so_o that_o it_o either_o resist_v it_o or_o reject_v sin_n or_o work_v it_o out_o although_o there_o be_v much_o of_o the_o filthiness_n of_o sin_n yet_o it_o still_o fight_v against_o it_o gainstand_v it_o work_v it_o out_o even_o as_o clean_a liquor_n do_v every_o unclean_a thing_n honey_n for_o example_n or_o as_o oil_n will_v be_v uppermost_a or_o as_o wine_n above_o the_o dregs_o when_o faith_n be_v in_o the_o heart_n the_o heart_n will_v not_o harbour_v sin_n thus_o it_o be_v say_v if_o i_o regard_v iniquity_n in_o my_o heart_n if_o there_o be_v never_o so_o much_o sinfulness_n in_o the_o heart_n yet_o if_o thou_o will_v be_v quit_v of_o it_o dislike_v it_o loathe_v it_o cry_v
thy_o mind_n but_o especial_o the_o sense_n of_o that_o great_a deliverance_n that_o great_a salvation_n so_o dear_o purchase_v that_o these_o may_v stir_v up_o thy_o love_n and_o love_n may_v be_v the_o motive_n of_o thy_o obedience_n and_o by_o reason_n that_o love_n flow_v from_o faith_n above_o all_o labour_n to_o hold_v thy_o faith_n stir_v and_o in_o action_n thus_o do_v david_n psal_n 26._o thy_o love_a kindness_n be_v ever_o before_o my_o eye_n and_o i_o have_v walk_v in_o thy_o truth_n thus_o do_v paul_n the_o love_n of_o christ_n constrain_v i_o to_o this_o end_n be_v earnest_n with_o the_o lord_n that_o according_a to_o his_o promise_n he_o will_v circumcise_v thy_o heart_n and_o cause_v thou_o to_o love_v he_o with_o the_o whole_a heart_n that_o by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n his_o love_n may_v be_v shed_v abroad_o in_o thy_o soul_n rom._n 5._o that_o he_o will_v give_v unto_o thou_o to_o be_v root_v and_o ground_v in_o love_n ephes_n 3._o obj._n i_o find_v not_o myself_o right_a in_o this_o point_n for_o i_o find_v not_o this_o love_n and_o cheerfulness_n but_o rather_o do_v because_o i_o dare_v not_o do_v otherwise_o a._n this_o mark_v indeed_o shall_v be_v wise_o consider_v by_o weak_a christian_n who_o be_v in_o their_o beginning_n especial_o or_o under_o tentation_n desertion_n affliction_n nor_o be_v it_o a_o sensible_a mark_n for_o all_o christian_n at_o all_o time_n but_o a_o mark_n of_o faith_n somewhat_o strengthen_v when_o the_o heart_n be_v beset_v with_o tentation_n desertion_n or_o affliction_n this_o work_n by_o love_n will_v not_o be_v sensible_a although_o it_o be_v secret_a further_o especial_o in_o the_o beginning_n of_o christianity_n it_o be_v not_o sensible_a for_o the_o understanding_n whereof_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v three_o sort_n of_o motive_n of_o obedience_n 1._o one_o altogether_o wrong_a have_v no_o eye_n to_o god_n so_o to_o eschew_v the_o ill_a opinion_n of_o man_n many_o do_v sundry_a good_a duty_n and_o become_v neighbour_n like_o in_o outward_a duty_n of_o outward_a obedience_n other_o to_o win_v the_o praise_n of_o man_n will_v go_v beyond_o their_o neighbour_n yea_o possible_o beyond_o good_a christian_n there_o be_v sundry_a other_o by-respect_n and_o many_o by-road_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o natural_a man_n and_o hypocrite_n the_o second_o sort_n of_o motive_n be_v that_o which_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o begin_v christian_n which_o be_v not_o altogether_o right_a and_o yet_o some_o way_n right_a as_o introductorie_n to_o right_n as_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o god_n and_o as_o join_v with_o some_o weak_a faith_n and_o some_o insensible_a love_n this_o be_v the_o motive_n of_o fear_n flow_v from_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n which_o have_v take_v a_o deep_a impression_n in_o they_o and_o their_o faith_n be_v but_o weak_a and_o stagger_a as_o yet_o prevail_v with_o they_o and_o be_v the_o most_o sensible_a motive_n that_o put_v they_o on_o they_o do_v because_o they_o dare_v not_o do_v otherwise_o because_o they_o fear_v god_n justice_n and_o have_v a_o waken_n in_o their_o own_o conscience_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o altogether_o wrong_a for_o the_o respect_n aforesaid_a for_o why_o do_v the_o lord_n denounce_v so_o many_o threaten_n and_o judgement_n but_o for_o this_o and_o that_o all_o these_o shall_v have_v their_o own_o place_n with_o we_o yea_o why_o be_v our_o obedience_n so_o often_o waken_v up_o by_o rod_n cross_n and_o affliction_n if_o this_o sort_n of_o fear_n be_v altogether_o wrong_a but_o as_o faith_n and_o love_n grow_v strong_a by_o little_a and_o little_o they_o cast_v out_o fear_v and_o so_o come_v the_o three_o motive_n even_o that_o acceptable_a motive_n of_o love_n this_o be_v that_o which_o st._n john_n 1.4_o v._o 18._o have_v pâ—â—fect_a love_n cast_v out_o fear_n and_o again_o he_o that_o fear_v be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n so_o that_o to_o work_v out_o of_o fear_n do_v not_o argue_v no_o love_n and_o so_o no_o faith_n but_o only_o that_o thou_o be_v not_o make_v perfect_a in_o love_n because_o of_o the_o weakness_n of_o thy_o faith_n labour_v then_o to_o strengthen_v thy_o faith_n that_o it_o may_v have_v more_o love_n for_o it_o flow_v from_o faith_n and_o be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o thy_o faith_n grow_v as_o faith_n grow_v and_o do_v not_o give_v place_n to_o that_o main_a policy_n of_o satan_n and_o ordinary_a and_o incident_a weakness_n of_o many_o christian_n to_o darken_v thy_o faith_n because_o thou_o find_v thy_o love_n weak_a but_o as_o for_o thou_o that_o either_o work_v not_o at_o all_o or_o if_o thou_o do_v any_o thing_n it_o arise_v from_o wrong_a motive_n and_o end_n from_o custom_n and_o not_o from_o conscience_n to_o please_v man_n and_o not_o to_o please_v god_n neither_o fear_v he_o nor_o love_v he_o thou_o have_v no_o faith_n and_o so_o be_v in_o a_o miserable_a condition_n a_o five_o mark_n and_o effect_n of_o faith_n be_v spiritual_a peace_n and_o joy_n for_o peace_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n through_o jesus_n christ_n our_o lord_n for_o joy_n in_o who_o believe_v we_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a and_o both_o together_o rom._n 15.13_o now_o the_o god_n of_o hope_n fill_v you_o with_o jâ—y_n and_o peace_n in_o believe_v q._n but_o have_v not_o the_o wicked_a and_o the_o natural_a man_n peace_n a._n true_a but_o it_o be_v far_o unlike_o the_o peace_n of_o the_o believer_n and_o of_o the_o godly_a and_o may_v be_v discern_v by_o sundry_a mark_n but_o clear_o and_o plain_o by_o these_o two_o 1._o the_o peace_n of_o the_o believer_n be_v after_o great_a unquietness_n and_o trouble_n and_o much_o hard_a war_n as_o we_o say_v ere_o he_o get_v unto_o it_o as_o we_o see_v in_o paul_n the_o jailor_n the_o convert_v in_o the_o act_n and_o these_o say_n come_v unto_o i_o all_o you_o that_o be_v weary_a and_o lade_v the_o whole_a need_v not_o the_o physician_n but_o they_o that_o be_v sick_a thus_o fare_v it_o with_o many_o yea_o in_o all_o there_o must_v be_v something_o of_o this_o kind_n else_o this_o peace_n and_o christ_n the_o prince_n of_o peace_n and_o purchaser_n of_o this_o peace_n can_v never_o be_v either_o sufficient_o seek_v to_o or_o prize_v but_o the_o natural_a man_n peace_n have_v be_v a_o continual_a peace_n a_o token_n that_o the_o strong_a man_n be_v not_o yet_o cast_v out_o for_o he_o will_v not_o be_v cast_v out_o without_o some_o sensible_a unquietness_n a_o token_n that_o the_o new_a birth_n have_v not_o be_v for_o it_o will_v not_o be_v without_o some_o pain_n q._n but_o may_v not_o even_o a_o natural_a man_n have_v a_o touch_n of_o conscience_n and_o afterward_o fall_v into_o security_n instead_o of_o a_o true_a peace_n a._n he_o may_v and_o therefore_o a_o man_n shall_v look_v how_o his_o peace_n have_v be_v purchase_v how_o he_o carry_v himself_o in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o unquietness_n if_o he_o betake_v he_o to_o wrong_v mean_n and_o by_o they_o do_v strive_v to_o smother_v and_o drive_v away_o his_o unquietness_n and_o not_o to_o the_o right_a mean_n of_o the_o word_n and_o prayer_n to_o cure_v his_o unquietness_n and_o wound_a conscience_n then_o certain_o his_o peace_n be_v not_o a_o right_a peace_n he_o have_v but_o smother_v the_o fire_n which_o will_v afterward_o break_v out_o more_o violent_o he_o have_v but_o skin_v over_o the_o wound_n which_o will_v afterward_o break_v forth_o more_o fearful_o but_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o a_o man_n in_o the_o time_n of_o his_o wound_a and_o waken_n have_v not_o strive_v to_o drive_v away_o his_o humiliation_n but_o rather_o to_o entertain_v and_o increase_v it_o in_o so_o much_o as_o he_o do_v conceive_v it_o to_o be_v a_o wholesome_a work_n of_o god_n spirit_n and_o do_v not_o tend_v to_o infidelity_n and_o desperation_n and_o do_v labour_n to_o cure_v it_o by_o the_o right_a mean_n and_o do_v come_v by_o it_o by_o the_o lord_n mean_n this_o be_v a_o safe_a and_o a_o well_o ground_a peace_n but_o moreover_o for_o the_o further_o clear_v of_o this_o point_n take_v in_o the_o other_o difference_n between_o the_o natural_a man_n peace_n and_o the_o believer_n peace_n the_o natural_a man_n as_o he_o have_v always_o peace_n so_o he_o have_v altogether_o and_o in_o all_o respect_v peace_n but_o the_o believer_n be_v not_o so_o he_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n but_o not_o with_o the_o devil_n peace_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o guiltiness_n of_o sin_n i_o mean_v in_o regard_n of_o the_o main_a battle_n but_o want_v not_o skirmish_n which_o the_o wicked_a have_v not_o for_o he_o have_v a_o tender_a and_o so_o a_o combat_v conscience_n but_o have_v not_o peace_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o sin_n for_o the_o
to_o be_v neglect_v but_o great_o to_o be_v labour_v for_o for_o be_v join_v with_o the_o former_a it_o fortify_v it_o strengthen_v the_o anchor_n of_o the_o soul_n it_o fill_v a_o man_n with_o christian_a courage_n comfort_n and_o cheerfulness_n and_o make_v he_o fruitful_a in_o good_a work_n as_o be_v evident_a 2_o pet._n 1.8_o and_o 10._o only_o about_o these_o two_o assurance_n we_o be_v to_o beware_v of_o these_o two_o thing_n 1._o that_o we_o betake_v we_o not_o to_o this_o last_o assurance_n only_o for_o thus_o we_o will_v deceive_v ourselves_o for_o it_o can_v be_v upright_o without_o it_o we_o shall_v not_o then_o betake_v we_o to_o it_o only_o for_o than_o we_o both_o mistake_v the_o nature_n of_o faith_n and_o as_o i_o be_v say_v can_v but_o deceive_v ourselves_o which_o be_v most_o dangerous_a 2._o we_o shall_v also_o beware_v that_o we_o betake_v we_o not_o to_o this_o second_o assurance_n in_o the_o first_o room_n for_o than_o we_o mistake_v the_o order_n of_o thing_n and_o shall_v but_o discourage_v ourselves_o and_o bewilder_n ourselves_o in_o the_o point_n of_o our_o first_o assurance_n and_o hold_v ourselves_o back_o from_o believe_v for_o the_o first_o assurance_n be_v to_o believe_v and_o the_o second_o to_o know_v that_o we_o believe_v how_o shall_v we_o know_v that_o we_o believe_v until_o it_o first_o be_v and_o yet_o this_o be_v the_o course_n that_o many_o take_v they_o will_v first_o know_v that_o they_o believe_v before_o they_o do_v labour_n to_o believe_v they_o will_v needs_o have_v the_o second_o assurance_n before_o they_o have_v the_o first_o though_o it_o be_v evident_a that_o they_o must_v first_o have_v the_o first_o for_o the_o second_o flow_v from_o the_o first_o yea_o and_o not_o at_o the_o first_o but_o from_o it_o be_v somewhat_o strengthen_v they_o will_v not_o have_v the_o first_o assurance_n unless_o they_o have_v first_o or_o at_o least_o with_o all_o the_o second_o whereas_o they_o shall_v never_o have_v the_o second_o until_o first_o of_o all_o they_o have_v the_o first_o and_o that_o in_o some_o good_a measure_n but_o this_o point_n of_o mistake_v the_o order_n of_o thing_n will_v be_v clear_a be_v speak_v of_o in_o the_o term_n we_o do_v propose_v you_o say_v that_o you_o miss_v many_o of_o the_o mark_n of_o faith_n feel_v not_o your_o heart_n purify_v from_o corruption_n find_v not_o the_o love_n of_o god_n repentance_n and_o so_o forth_o and_o therefore_o this_o trouble_v you_o discourage_v you_o and_o weaken_v you_o that_o you_o can_v or_o dare_v not_o apply_v the_o promise_n or_o mean_n of_o faith_n unto_o you_o i_o answer_v this_o come_v from_o mistake_v the_o order_n of_o thing_n if_o these_o mark_n you_o miss_v be_v of_o thing_n that_o either_o go_v before_o or_o accompany_v faith_n you_o have_v it_o may_v be_v some_o reason_n for_o this_o complaint_n but_o see_v they_o come_v from_o these_o thing_n that_o follow_v faith_n and_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o faith_n why_o shall_v the_o want_n of_o they_o discourage_v you_o to_o believe_v yea_o rather_o they_o shall_v stir_v you_o up_o to_o believe_v that_o so_o you_o may_v come_v by_o they_o for_o they_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o faith_n how_o shall_v you_o think_v to_o obtain_v they_o unless_o you_o first_o believe_v that_o be_v take_v and_o apply_v the_o promise_n i_o pray_v you_o wherehence_a flow_v victory_n over_o corruption_n but_o from_o faith_n be_v it_o not_o faith_n that_o purify_v the_o heart_n and_o wherehence_a flow_v the_o love_n of_o god_n but_o even_o also_o from_o faith_n apprehend_v the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o according_a to_o that_o of_o the_o apostle_n we_o love_v he_o because_o he_o love_v we_o first_o and_o for_o repentance_n or_o godly_a sorrow_n it_o flow_v from_o that_o love_n and_o be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o that_o love_n as_o our_o love_n be_v according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o our_o faith_n so_o outward_a act_n of_o obedience_n faith_n work_v by_o love_n so_o then_o to_o suspend_v our_o faith_n and_o believe_v till_o we_o get_v these_o be_v the_o high_a way_n never_o to_o get_v faith_n further_o whence_o be_v all_o these_o thing_n to_o be_v get_v the_o want_n whereof_o discourage_v we_o to_o believe_v be_v they_o any_o other_o where_o to_o be_v get_v but_o from_o christ_n or_o any_o other_o way_n to_o be_v get_v from_o he_o but_o by_o faith_n can_v we_o get_v the_o bloody_a issue_n of_o our_o corruption_n any_o otherways_o cure_v but_o by_o draw_v virtue_n from_o christ_n and_o the_o power_n of_o his_o death_n can_v we_o get_v our_o spiritual_a want_n otherways_o supply_v then_o out_o of_o christ_n his_o fullness_n or_o our_o spiritual_a weakness_n otherways_o help_v and_o strengthen_v i_o be_o able_a to_o the_o all_o thing_n through_o christ_n that_o strengthen_v i_o so_o then_o i_o say_v we_o must_v not_o delay_v our_o believe_a that_o be_v apply_v of_o the_o promise_n to_o ourselves_o till_o we_o find_v these_o thing_n redress_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a we_o must_v believe_v that_o we_o may_v have_v these_o thing_n help_v thou_o will_v not_o believe_v and_o apply_v the_o promise_n until_o thou_o find_v these_o thing_n but_o thou_o shall_v never_o find_v these_o thing_n until_o thou_o first_o believe_v and_o apply_v we_o will_v rather_o have_v some_o worthiness_n in_o ourselves_o then_o come_v by_o faith_n to_o christ_n but_o we_o can_v have_v none_o further_o observe_v that_o these_o thing_n do_v not_o only_o flow_v from_o faith_n but_o from_o faith_n somewhat_o strengthen_v a_o tree_n can_v bring_v forth_o fruit_n at_o the_o first_o until_o the_o time_n it_o be_v well_o fasten_v and_o take_v some_o root_n now_o these_o thing_n you_o speak_v of_o be_v the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n how_o think_v you_o shall_v they_o be_v produce_v without_o faith_n somewhat_o root_v how_o shall_v you_o expect_v they_o as_o long_o as_o you_o hold_v the_o tree_n of_o your_o faith_n thus_o shake_v and_o toss_v &_o through_o your_o own_o default_n suffer_v it_o not_o to_o take_v root_n so_o then_o to_o conclude_v i_o will_v advise_v all_o those_o who_o feel_v the_o want_n or_o weakness_n of_o faith_n not_o to_o run_v present_o to_o the_o mark_n of_o faith_n i_o mean_v those_o which_o be_v take_v from_o the_o effect_n of_o faith_n for_o this_o will_v but_o encumber_v their_o faith_n and_o weaken_v their_o apply_v this_o will_v also_o make_v they_o to_o stagger_v at_o the_o promise_n but_o i_o will_v advise_v they_o i_o say_v to_o fly_v to_o the_o mean_n and_o to_o apply_v the_o promise_n what_o ever_o their_o corruption_n or_o want_n be_v even_o to_o do_v as_o abraham_n the_o father_n of_o the_o faithful_a do_v he_o look_v not_o to_o any_o insufficiency_n in_o himself_o but_o to_o the_o power_n and_o faithfulness_n of_o the_o promiser_n he_o consider_v not_o the_o deadness_n of_o his_o body_n etc._n etc._n and_o therefore_o stagger_v not_o at_o the_o promise_n but_o be_v strong_a in_o faith_n he_o give_v glory_n to_o god_n be_v full_o persuade_v that_o what_o he_o have_v promise_v he_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v even_o so_o shall_v we_o we_o shall_v not_o at_o first_o look_v to_o these_o discouragement_n that_o present_v themselves_o unto_o we_o from_o the_o deadness_n and_o disease_n of_o our_o own_o soul_n for_o than_o we_o shall_v never_o believe_v for_o these_o will_v never_o cease_v until_o we_o first_o believe_v but_o let_v we_o look_v to_o the_o promise_n of_o a_o true_a and_o powerful_a god_n that_o he_o be_v both_o faith_n full_a who_o have_v promise_v and_o that_o he_o be_v able_a to_o perform_v what_o he_o have_v promise_v this_o be_v the_o ground_n and_o prop_n of_o abraham_n and_o sarahs_n faith_n the_o parent_n and_o pattern_n of_o the_o faithful_a rom._n 4.21_o heb._n 11.8_o and_o these_o shall_v be_v the_o prop_n of_o our_o faith_n but_o we_o will_v have_v a_o way_n of_o believe_v of_o our_o own_o and_o such_o be_v our_o mischievous_a infidelity_n that_o we_o can_v rest_v upon_o god_n alone_o his_o promise_n his_o power_n and_o his_o truth_n unless_o we_o find_v something_o in_o ourselves_o it_o be_v both_o remarkable_a and_o comfortable_a heb._n 6._o that_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n there_o allow_v we_o not_o only_a confidence_n simple_o and_o consolation_n but_o even_o a_o strong_a consolation_n and_o that_o from_o no_o ground_n in_o ourselves_o but_o only_o from_o god_n his_o great_a truth_n in_o his_o oath_n and_o promise_n further_o let_v this_o be_v add_v to_o the_o advice_n
