servant_n and_o this_o be_v not_o only_o to_o be_v acknowledge_v by_o they_o but_o prefer_v before_o any_o interest_n of_o their_o own_o and_o so_o will_v be_v by_o every_o faithful_a servant_n and_o therefore_o he_o will_v be_v content_a at_o any_o time_n to_o resign_v and_o depart_v from_o neglect_n and_o disregard_n his_o own_o interest_n to_o promote_v salve_n or_o secure_v the_o interest_n of_o god_n glory_n agodly_a man_n look_v upon_o all_o that_o he_o own_v as_o god_n more_o than_o he_o and_o therefore_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o use_v it_o or_o leave_v it_o lay_v it_o down_o or_o out_o his_o salvation_n but_o of_o these_o thing_n more_o hereafter_o in_o the_o application_n come_v we_o now_o to_o the_o three_o question_n viz._n what_o be_v mean_v by_o those_o word_n with_o 〈◊〉_d with_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d fear_n and_o tremble_a we_o have_v speak_v of_o the_o matter_n of_o this_o work_n wherein_o that_o consist_v these_o word_n be_v add_v to_o express_v the_o manner_n of_o the_o performance_n of_o this_o duty_n and_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v imagine_v that_o there_o be_v any_o material_a difference_n in_o the_o sense_n of_o these_o two_o word_n though_o the_o latter_a of_o they_o do_v proper_o signify_v the_o effect_n the_o former_a chryst_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d chryst_n for_o tremble_v be_v the_o effect_n of_o fear_n but_o here_o they_o be_v no_o other_o than_o synonymous_n expression_n the_o general_a use_n whereof_o be_v only_o to_o fortify_v and_o urge_v the_o same_o sense_n the_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n will_v best_o be_v understand_v partly_o from_o the_o opposite_n of_o such_o a_o disposition_n as_o be_v thereby_o signify_v and_o partly_o from_o the_o use_n of_o the_o same_o word_n in_o other_o text_n of_o scripture_n now_o the_o direct_a opposite_n of_o fear_n and_o tremble_a be_v presumption_n and_o selfconfidence_n or_o vain_a confidence_n together_o with_o joc._n with_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d chrysost_o in_o joc._n negligence_n and_o spiritual_a sloth_n fear_v and_o tremble_v be_v first_o oppose_v to_o presumption_n and_o selfconfidence_n and_o so_o signisy_n humility_n modesty_n and_o reverence_n from_o a_o humble_a sense_n of_o our_o own_o weakness_n aptness_n to_o neglect_n and_o inability_n to_o perform_v this_o work_n without_o the_o special_a assistance_n of_o divine_a grace_n rom._n 11.20_o 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d be_v not_o high-minded_a but_o fear_v this_o agree_v with_o the_o subsequent_a word_n declare_v the_o reason_n of_o this_o disposition_n for_o it_o be_v god_n that_o work_v in_o you_o to_o will_n and_o to_o do_v of_o his_o good_a pleasure_n and_o with_o this_o sense_n of_o these_o word_n agree_v the_o use_n of_o they_o in_o psal_n 2.11_o serve_v the_o lord_n with_o fear_n and_o rejoice_v with_o tremble_a i._n e._n with_o all_o humble_a reverence_n and_o dread_a of_o his_o divine_a majesty_n as_o heb._n 12.28_o let_v we_o have_v grace_n whereby_o we_o may_v serve_v god_n acceptable_o with_o reverence_n and_o godly_a fear_n and_o without_o doubt_n a_o second_o thing_n signify_v by_o this_o fear_n and_o tremble_a chrysost_n 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d 〈◊〉_d chrysost_n be_v diligence_n care_n and_o solicitude_n upon_o the_o due_a apprehension_n and_o consideration_n of_o
that_o man_n shall_v do_v unto_o you_o do_v you_o unto_o they_o likewise_o and_o though_o this_o self-love_n be_v no_o where_o command_v in_o express_a term_n because_o it_o need_v not_o yet_o the_o immediate_a effect_n and_o instance_n of_o it_o be_v as_o when_o we_o be_v command_v to_o lay_v up_o for_o ourselves_o treasure_n in_o heaven_n to_o seek_v those_o thing_n which_o be_v above_o to_o work_v out_o our_o own_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a to_o use_v all_o diligence_n to_o make_v our_o call_v and_o election_n sure_a etc._n etc._n but_o to_o return_v from_o this_o digression_n though_o it_o be_v manifest_a by_o the_o premise_a discourse_n and_o without_o it_o by_o the_o direct_a light_n and_o law_n of_o nature_n that_o there_o be_v a_o kind_n of_o self-love_n which_o be_v more_o than_o innocent_a and_o consequent_o which_o can_v be_v no_o impediment_n to_o that_o love_n of_o god_n which_o be_v to_o be_v exercise_v in_o the_o seek_n of_o his_o glory_n but_o may_v be_v subordinate_a and_o subservient_fw-fr thereunto_o yet_o that_o which_o be_v common_o understand_v by_o the_o name_n of_o self-love_n be_v indeed_o the_o great_a enemy_n to_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o seek_v ourselves_o inordinate_o be_v in_o truth_n the_o only_a thing_n that_o divert_v we_o from_o the_o seek_n of_o god_n and_o his_o glory_n for_o though_o a_o man_n may_v be_v turn_v aside_o from_o his_o duty_n of_o obedience_n to_o god_n by_o a_o irregular_a love_n or_o fear_v of_o man_n and_o though_o the_o please_a of_o man_n be_v a_o ordinary_a temptation_n to_o that_o which_o be_v displease_v to_o god_n yet_o both_o that_o love_n and_o fear_v of_o man_n be_v reducible_a to_o self-love_n as_o its_o principle_n and_o end_n and_o this_o vicious_a self-love_n though_o it_o be_v not_o the_o only_a thing_n which_o be_v understand_v by_o the_o name_n of_o original_a sin_n yet_o may_v it_o fit_o enough_o be_v so_o call_v in_o as_o much_o as_o upon_o strict_a examination_n it_o may_v be_v find_v to_o bâ—_n the_o root_n and_o original_a of_o all_o actual_a sin_n both_o of_o omission_n and_o commission_n so_o that_o in_o what_o degree_n 〈◊〉_d man_n be_v able_a to_o overcome_v this_o let_n in_o such_o degreâ—_n he_o be_v free_a and_o prepare_v to_o seek_v and_o serve_v the_o glorâ—_n of_o god_n and_o he_o that_o be_v thorough_o willing_a and_o able_a to_o deny_v himself_o shall_v find_v nothing_o to_o let_v he_o from_o serve_v of_o god_n and_o yet_o so_o true_a it_o be_v that_o while_o god_n will_v we_o 〈◊〉_d have_v such_o a_o universal_a respect_n to_o his_o glory_n as_o 〈◊〉_d express_v in_o this_o rule_n he_o do_v not_o inhibit_v we_o the_o love_n of_o our_o selus_fw-la that_o upon_o a_o right_a understanding_n 〈◊〉_d the_o matter_n it_o will_v be_v evident_a to_o a_o true_a believer_n that_o he_o love_v himself_o best_o that_o love_v god_n better_o and_o this_o be_v most_o manifest_a upon_o the_o account_n of_o that_o final_a happiness_n which_o be_v promise_v in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v to_o they_o that_o love_n god_n and_o because_o this_o be_v the_o chief_a and_o high_a interest_n of_o a_o believer_n it_o be_v certain_a that_o the_o best_a way_n to_o secure_v and_o promote_v a_o manâ—_n own_o interest_n be_v to_o secure_v the_o interest_n of_o god_n glory_n with_o the_o utmost_a of_o fide_fw-la lity_n and_o holy_a zeal_n second_o he_o that_o have_v such_o a_o true_a respect_n to_o god_n glory_n as_o this_o text_n require_v will_v be_v grieve_v at_o and_o for_o the_o dishonour_n of_o god_n whether_o it_o be_v do_v by_o himself_o or_o by_o other_o 1._o as_o oft_o as_o his_o conscience_n shall_v charge_v he_o with_o the_o do_v of_o any_o thing_n contrary_a to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n he_o will_v be_v hearty_o grieve_v for_o it_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o apostle_n call_v godly_a sorrow_n or_o sorrow_n according_a to_o god_n namely_o that_o only_o whereby_o a_o man_n be_v sorry_a for_o the_o displease_a or_o dishonour_v of_o god_n godly_a sorrow_n be_v the_o scripture-name_n for_o that_o which_o the_o school_n call_v contrition_n and_o be_v the_o proper_a effect_n and_o therefore_o a_o infallible_a sign_n of_o love_n to_o god_n a_o carnal_a man_n and_o he_o that_o be_v worse_a a_o reprobate_a and_o a_o devil_n may_v be_v grieve_v for_o sin_n as_o it_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o mischief_n or_o misery_n to_o himself_o but_o not_o at_o all_o as_o it_o be_v dishonourable_a and_o offensive_a to_o god_n the_o carnal_a man_n sorrow_n which_o he_o pretend_v for_o his_o sin_n be_v not_o so_o much_o nay_o not_o at_o all_o indeed_o for_o the_o sin_n as_o such_o but_o for_o the_o event_n and_o consequence_n thereof_o which_o he_o either_o feel_v or_o fear_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v the_o only_a sorrow_n which_o the_o school_n doctor_n understand_v by_o the_o term_n of_o attrition_n which_o some_o of_o they_o maintain_v to_o be_v sufficient_a to_o salvation_n if_o it_o be_v servant_n child_n nor_o friend_n of_o god_n and_o he_o that_o have_v any_o entire_a affection_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n will_v desire_v and_o endeavour_n as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lie_v to_o prevent_v the_o impeachment_n thereof_o by_o other_o as_o well_o as_o by_o himself_o and_o that_o not_o only_o by_o remove_v of_o scandal_n as_o in_o the_o case_n of_o the_o corinthian_n which_o saint_n paul_n here_o speak_v of_o but_o by_o all_o the_o office_n of_o spiritual_a charity_n viz._n by_o admonish_v reprove_v exhort_v counsel_v etc._n etc._n and_o by_o perform_v all_o the_o duty_n of_o his_o place_n towards_o such_o as_o relate_v unto_o he_o he_o that_o true_o love_v god_n will_v desire_v as_o many_o rival_n and_o make_v as_o many_o friend_n for_o god_n as_o he_o be_v able_a 3._o he_o that_o be_v true_o desirous_a of_o and_o solicitous_a for_o the_o promote_a and_o maintain_v god_n glory_n will_v rejoice_v in_o it_o more_o than_o in_o any_o thing_n else_o if_o god_n be_v glorify_v in_o any_o thing_n that_o be_v he_o he_o will_v rejoice_v in_o it_o more_o than_o at_o the_o improvement_n thereof_o to_o any_o advantage_n of_o his_o own_o he_o will_v not_o be_v content_v
