opinion_n of_o he_o but_o there_o be_v no_o such_o thing_n to_o be_v affirm_v of_o he_o who_o look_v upon_o god_n as_o a_o lord_n and_o a_o father_n but_o withal_o a_o good_a and_o gracious_a one_o for_o beside_o that_o such_o a_o fear_n be_v enjoin_v we_o by_o he_o who_o do_v also_o lay_v upon_o we_o the_o command_n of_o love_n and_o therefore_o not_o to_o be_v think_v unless_o we_o will_v of_o they_o to_o look_v up_o to_o his_o mercy_n and_o to_o love_n and_o trust_v in_o he_o for_o they_o the_o same_o answer_n with_o a_o very_a little_a variation_n may_v be_v apply_v to_o that_o difference_n which_o be_v object_v between_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o law_n for_o though_o the_o gospel_n reckon_v we_o not_o in_o the_o place_n of_o servant_n and_o vassal_n and_o consequent_o exact_v not_o their_o fear_n of_o we_o yet_o it_o reckon_v we_o in_o the_o place_n of_o son_n who_o be_v not_o only_o to_o have_v a_o love_n but_o a_o fear_n also_o for_o he_o that_o be_v their_o parent_n which_o answer_n be_v the_o more_o reasonable_a because_o the_o scripture_n itself_o represent_v those_o that_o be_v under_o the_o first_o covenant_n as_o the_o child_n of_o the_o bondwoman_n and_o such_o as_o be_v therefore_o slave_n themselves_o but_o those_o under_o the_o second_o as_o the_o child_n of_o the_o free_a to_o who_o therefore_o though_o it_o do_v no_o way_n appertain_v to_o entertain_v a_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n and_o those_o fear_n wherewith_o it_o be_v accompany_v yet_o to_o preserve_v such_o a_o reverential_a regard_n for_o the_o 1._o now_o that_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o of_o his_o judgement_n be_v of_o very_o great_a use_n to_o bring_v we_o unto_o god_n and_o unto_o christ_n may_v appear_v from_o that_o great_a contrariety_n that_o be_v between_o the_o state_n of_o nature_n and_o the_o purity_n and_o holiness_n of_o god_n for_o that_o be_v suppose_v as_o it_o must_v it_o be_v not_o easy_a to_o conceive_v man_n shall_v be_v draw_v with_o the_o cord_n of_o love_n and_o affect_v he_o who_o be_v so_o contrary_a to_o their_o inclination_n and_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n may_v be_v of_o more_o force_n to_o draw_v we_o to_o his_o love_n those_o have_v not_o all_o of_o they_o so_o manifest_v a_o contrariety_n to_o our_o corrupt_a nature_n as_o the_o purity_n and_o holiness_n of_o god_n have_v yet_o as_o many_o of_o they_o be_v of_o a_o spiritual_a nature_n and_o so_o not_o very_o likely_a to_o be_v acceptable_a so_o which_o be_v more_o they_o be_v not_o to_o be_v bestow_v or_o at_o least_o not_o with_o any_o certainty_n or_o perfection_n till_o we_o come_v to_o the_o other_o world_n and_o who_o then_o natural_o speak_v will_v quit_v present_a and_o sensual_a enjoyment_n for_o they_o and_o leave_v a_o love_n which_o he_o be_v sure_a of_o for_o so_o uncertain_a and_o remote_a a_o mistress_n to_o induce_v man_n therefore_o to_o quit_v their_o so_o much_o belove_v transgression_n it_o be_v necessary_a to_o stir_v up_o their_o fear_n and_o make_v they_o see_v that_o what_o they_o pursue_v will_v rob_v they_o of_o what_o they_o love_v and_o make_v they_o miserable_a as_o well_o in_o their_o body_n as_o their_o soul_n and_o indeed_o as_o it_o rare_o happen_v that_o man_n be_v reclaim_v from_o their_o evil_a course_n but_o by_o some_o such_o disgustful_a mean_n so_o which_o be_v of_o much_o more_o force_n we_o find_v the_o apostle_n take_v this_o course_n in_o convert_v the_o unbelieving_a world_n represent_v to_o they_o first_o the_o guilt_n of_o their_o own_o sin_n and_o the_o wrath_n they_o have_v incur_v and_o then_o the_o tender_v of_o god_n goodness_n by_o that_o mean_v not_o only_o abate_v of_o their_o heat_n towards_o their_o former_a extravagancy_n but_o even_o constrain_a they_o to_o take_v a_o view_n of_o the_o beauty_n of_o religion_n which_o otherwise_o they_o will_v never_o have_v consider_v 2._o but_o beside_o that_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n be_v of_o singular_a use_n in_o bring_v man_n to_o christ_n and_o to_o god_n it_o be_v also_o such_o after_o our_o conversion_n to_o he_o yea_o throughout_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o our_o life_n and_o here_o not_o to_o insist_v upon_o the_o apostle_n persuade_v even_o such_o by_o the_o terror_n of_o the_o lord_n their_o exhort_v they_o to_o work_v out_o their_o salvation_n with_o fear_n and_o tremble_a and_o to_o serve_v god_n acceptable_o with_o reverence_n and_o godly_a fear_n i_o shall_v content_v myself_o to_o propose_v to_o your_o consideration_n the_o remain_v of_o that_o evil_a nature_n which_o be_v in_o the_o very_o best_a of_o we_o and_o how_o much_o more_o than_o in_o the_o generality_n of_o believer_n for_o these_o will_v show_v it_o to_o be_v as_o necessary_a to_o keep_v we_o in_o the_o way_n as_o it_o be_v to_o bring_v we_o into_o it_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o if_o grace_n do_v at_o once_o purify_v the_o heart_n from_o all_o extravagancy_n if_o it_o take_v away_o both_o our_o sin_n and_o our_o affection_n to_o they_o last_o if_o it_o put_v we_o into_o the_o condition_n we_o be_v in_o when_o we_o be_v create_v and_o make_v we_o entire_o and_o perfect_o new_a creature_n so_o it_o be_v not_o impossible_a but_o we_o may_v follow_v the_o conduct_n of_o our_o leader_n when_o only_o draw_v by_o the_o cord_n of_o love_n and_o yet_o i_o can_v but_o observe_v by_o the_o way_n that_o god_n think_v not_o that_o enough_o to_o preserve_v adam_n in_o his_o innocency_n but_o add_v moreover_o the_o terror_n of_o die_v the_o death_n if_o he_o persist_v not_o in_o it_o but_o when_o it_o be_v certain_a that_o though_o sin_n be_v wound_v yet_o it_o be_v not_o perfect_o mortify_v when_o there_o be_v remain_v of_o corruption_n in_o the_o very_o best_a of_o we_o who_o can_v think_v even_o the_o regenerate_a man_n to_o be_v so_o good_a nature_a as_o not_o to_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o terror_n to_o nip_v those_o bud_n and_o hinder_v they_o from_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n unto_o unrighteousness_n for_o beside_o that_o under_o such_o circumstance_n all_o the_o method_n of_o god_n be_v little_a enough_o to_o restrain_v we_o experience_n show_v that_o of_o fear_n to_o be_v often_o needful_a carelessness_n and_o wantonness_n be_v apt_a to_o make_v we_o forget_v the_o obligation_n of_o goodness_n and_o not_o only_o to_o forget_v but_o to_o despise_v they_o but_o when_o beside_o the_o obligation_n of_o god_n goodness_n man_n have_v always_o before_o their_o eye_n the_o strictness_n of_o his_o justice_n when_o they_o consider_v as_o well_o what_o vengeance_n will_v pursue_v they_o if_o they_o go_v astray_o as_o how_o great_a encouragement_n they_o have_v to_o walk_v in_o that_o way_n which_o god_n have_v mark_v out_o to_o they_o then_o i_o say_v even_o flesh_n and_o blood_n will_v startle_v at_o the_o evil_a that_o present_v itself_o and_o avoid_v it_o lest_o it_o become_v miserable_a by_o it_o have_v thus_o show_v both_o what_o the_o passion_n of_o fear_n be_v and_o how_o god_n be_v the_o object_n of_o it_o together_o with_o the_o consistency_n of_o that_o fear_n with_o the_o dispensation_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o usefulness_n thereof_o both_o in_o our_o conversion_n to_o and_o walk_v with_o god_n i_o may_v seem_v to_o have_v say_v enough_o not_o only_o to_o excite_v that_o passion_n in_o you_o but_o to_o
love_v for_o how_o hardly_o be_v we_o bring_v to_o pant_v after_o that_o presence_n of_o he_o though_o we_o find_v little_a on_o earth_n to_o make_v we_o desirous_a of_o continuance_n in_o it_o and_o it_o may_v be_v a_o long_a and_o irksome_a sickness_n as_o if_o this_o life_n with_o all_o the_o misfortune_n that_o attend_v it_o be_v preferable_a to_o his_o presence_n where_o there_o be_v fullness_n of_o joy_n and_o at_o who_o right_a hand_n there_o be_v pleasure_n for_o evermore_o of_o the_o first_o and_o most_o immediate_a expression_n of_o our_o love_n i_o have_v discourse_v hitherto_o and_o show_v withal_o how_o far_o we_o be_v from_o have_v that_o testimony_n of_o our_o own_o proceed_v we_o now_o to_o another_o which_o though_o not_o so_o immediate_a yet_o be_v as_o separable_a from_o love_n that_o it_o be_v oftentimes_o define_v by_o it_o aristotle_n in_o that_o most_o excellent_a piece_n of_o his_o rhetoric_n 4._o rhetoric_n li._n 2._o c._n 4._o define_v love_n to_o be_v a_o passion_n whereby_o we_o wish_v to_o any_o one_o those_o thing_n which_o we_o think_v good_a for_o he_o now_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o in_o strict_a speak_v this_o expression_n can_v have_v no_o place_n here_o because_o god_n be_v infinite_o happy_a yet_o inasmuch_o as_o god_n declare_v himself_o to_o be_v well_o please_v with_o the_o glorify_v of_o his_o name_n which_o he_o have_v put_v in_o our_o power_n either_o to_o do_v or_o not_o therefore_o to_o express_v our_o love_n to_o he_o it_o be_v requisite_a we_o desire_v that_o so_o it_o may_v be_v by_o all_o those_o to_o who_o have_v and_o keep_v his_o commandment_n he_o it_o be_v that_o love_v he_o joh._n 14.21_o so_o that_o disciple_n of_o he_o 1_o ep._n 5.3_o that_o this_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n that_o we_o keep_v his_o commandment_n and_o perform_v whatsoever_o he_o require_v as_o if_o this_o be_v not_o only_o a_o certain_a but_o the_o only_a consequent_a of_o our_o love_n or_o rather_o as_o if_o it_o that_o whosoever_o shall_v due_o consider_v it_o can_v but_o be_v some_o way_n affect_v with_o it_o we_o can_v but_o know_v that_o it_o be_v our_o own_o viciousness_n which_o make_v the_o opposition_n abhor_v so_o lovely_a a_o object_n which_o notwithstanding_o we_o find_v even_o such_o in_o that_o black_a catalogue_n of_o sinner_n which_o st._n paul_n give_v rom._n 1.30_o and_o indeed_o it_o be_v what_o be_v so_o include_v whether_o they_o be_v such_o as_o be_v more_o near_o of_o kin_n to_o it_o or_o be_v far_o remove_v from_o it_o of_o the_o former_a sort_n be_v the_o command_a or_o instigate_a man_n to_o murder_n or_o assist_v the_o murderer_n in_o it_o the_o use_v such_o mean_n as_o be_v likely_a enough_o to_o produce_v it_o or_o entertain_v any_o murderous_a intention_n or_o desire_n of_o the_o latter_a the_o procure_n of_o abortion_n even_o where_o the_o child_n be_v not_o quick_a wound_v or_o maim_v and_o in_o fine_a all_o violence_n whatsoever_o unless_o in_o the_o
