mind_n which_o have_v before_o be_v somewhat_o touch_v viz._n that_o sorow_v for_o sin_n be_v prove_v to_o be_v of_o two_o sort_n one_o proper_a to_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n and_o the_o other_o to_o the_o reprobate_n for_o it_o be_v manifest_a that_o even_o these_o i_o mean_v such_o as_o have_v be_v evident_o prove_v reprobate_n have_v be_v find_v to_o have_v have_v a_o certain_a sorrow_n sigh_v and_o mourn_v in_o they_o as_o do_v appear_v by_o the_o example_n of_o cain_n saul_n ahab_n and_o judas_n and_o yet_o nothing_o partaker_n but_o clean_o void_a of_o that_o true_a repentance_n which_o have_v be_v find_v in_o the_o godly_a sort_n and_o choose_a people_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o this_o sorrow_n of_o such_o wicked_a one_o be_v the_o same_o which_o before_o be_v mention_v to_o have_v his_o original_n only_o from_o the_o law_n of_o god_n without_o any_o taste_n or_o touch_v of_o the_o gospel_n but_o that_o other_o sorrow_n which_o we_o use_v in_o this_o place_n as_o a_o mark_n of_o true_a repentance_n and_o which_o i_o account_v as_o the_o forerunner_n of_o repentance_n be_v only_o incident_a and_o do_v proper_o appertain_v to_o the_o elect_a and_o choose_a of_o the_o lord_n and_o be_v find_v to_o have_v a_o far_o further_a step_n than_o have_v the_o former_a and_o therefore_o lest_o we_o deceive_v ourselves_o herein_o as_o hypocrite_n often_o do_v let_v we_o in_o a_o word_n or_o two_o as_o brief_o as_o we_o may_v observe_v the_o difference_n betwixt_o these_o two_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n this_o counterfeit_a and_o hypocritical_a sorrow_n sorrow_n counterf_n it_o and_o hypocritical_a sorrow_n which_o as_o i_o say_v be_v find_v in_o hypocrite_n arise_v from_o the_o law_n and_o that_o only_a in_o consideration_n of_o the_o heavy_a and_o terrible_a judgement_n in_o the_o same_o denounce_v against_o the_o transgressor_n thereof_o and_o hereupon_o it_o be_v that_o they_o mourn_v and_o sigh_v only_o for_o that_o they_o see_v and_o perceive_v themselves_o by_o reason_n of_o their_o great_a sin_n and_o wiekedness_n by_o force_n and_o by_o the_o sentence_n of_o the_o law_n to_o be_v bring_v into_o a_o dangerous_a or_o a_o damnable_a estate_n but_o as_o for_o the_o sin_n itself_o which_o by_o they_o be_v commit_v day_n by_o day_n although_o it_o be_v in_o the_o proper_a nature_n thereof_o never_o so_o filthy_a or_o abominable_a yet_o do_v they_o not_o mourn_v for_o it_o but_o remain_v still_o in_o they_o with_o as_o great_a love_n and_o take_v as_o great_a pleasure_n therein_o and_o have_v as_o great_a a_o desire_n to_o commit_v the_o same_o still_o as_o ever_o they_o have_v at_o any_o time_n before_o so_o small_a a_o alteration_n be_v find_v to_o follow_v in_o they_o upon_o this_o their_o sorrow_n and_o so_o far_o off_o be_v they_o from_o have_v even_o this_o first_o mark_n of_o true_a repentance_n but_o it_o be_v far_o otherwise_o with_o the_o man_n regenerate_v regenerate_v difference_n betwixt_o the_o sorrow_n of_o the_o unregenerate_a and_o regenerate_v for_o although_o his_o sorrow_n begin_v in_o deed_n in_o the_o law_n for_o that_o thereby_o he_o come_v to_o the_o knowledge_n first_o of_o his_o sin_n and_o second_o of_o the_o heavy_a judgement_n by_o the_o law_n due_a unto_o the_o same_o yet_o do_v not_o his_o sorrow_n there_o stay_v and_o make_v a_o end_n but_o end_v indeed_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v that_o he_o be_v find_v to_o be_v sad_a &_o heavy_a not_o only_o in_o respect_n or_o regard_n of_o the_o danger_n whereinto_o by_o sin_n he_o be_v bring_v but_o also_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o sin_n itself_o which_o he_o now_o utter_o hate_v and_o detest_v for_o that_o he_o see_v and_o find_v it_o to_o be_v so_o odious_a and_o loathsome_a in_o the_o sight_n of_o god_n not_o only_o because_o he_o be_v a_o severe_a judge_n ready_a to_o take_v revenge_n for_o the_o breach_n of_o his_o law_n as_o do_v the_o reprobate_n but_o also_o because_o they_o find_v and_o feel_v he_o to_o be_v so_o good_a so_o gracious_a so_o love_v and_o so_o merciful_a a_o father_n against_o who_o he_o so_o ungracious_o and_o unnatural_o like_o a_o rebellious_a child_n have_v transgress_v and_o although_o that_o this_o his_o sorrow_n in_o these_o respect_n be_v find_v and_o prove_v to_o be_v great_a yet_o be_v he_o not_o therein_o leave_v comfortless_a but_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o sorrow_n find_v comfort_n as_o shall_v appear_v hereafter_o again_o this_o sorrow_n proceed_v of_o the_o fear_n of_o punishment_n of_o sin_n by_o the_o law_n bring_v forth_o desperation_n in_o the_o reprobate_n as_o appear_v in_o cain_n and_o judas_n and_o other_o if_o it_o stay_v only_o in_o the_o law_n and_o have_v no_o regard_n unto_o the_o gospel_n for_o the_o law_n bring_v nothing_o else_o but_o terror_n and_o judgement_n the_o law_n indeed_o will_v justify_v and_o upon_o instification_n minister_v unto_o man_n great_a consolation_n but_o it_o must_v in_o all_o point_n according_a to_o the_o purity_n thereof_o be_v fulfil_v which_o we_o through_o our_o weakness_n be_v not_o able_a to_o do_v and_o therefore_o instead_o of_o justify_v we_o reap_v a_o curse_n and_o instead_o of_o consolation_n do_v gain_v sorrow_n which_o sorrow_n be_v wrought_v and_o effect_v in_o the_o heart_n by_o the_o spirit_n indeed_o but_o it_o be_v by_o that_o spirit_n which_o the_o apostle_n call_v the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n 8._o rom._n 8._o which_o bring_v forth_o nought_o but_o fear_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v by_o the_o same_o apostle_n call_v not_o simple_o a_o sorrow_n but_o a_o that_o be_v a_o assure_a hope_n of_o free_a remission_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n which_o hope_n be_v not_o to_o be_v find_v in_o the_o other_o personsbeforenamed_a and_o so_o though_o there_o be_v a_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n in_o the_o elect_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o because_o they_o be_v out_o of_o hope_n of_o pardon_n for_o the_o same_o but_o for_o the_o cause_n before_o mention_v have_v always_o the_o hope_n of_o remission_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o the_o same_o join_v therewith_o for_o they_o see_v and_o plain_o perceive_v that_o god_n show_v himself_o to_o them-ward_n as_o a_o kind_n and_o love_a father_n and_o therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n he_o afflict_v and_o chastise_v they_o they_o do_v and_o be_v bold_a to_o confess_v the_o same_o also_o that_o he_o do_v it_o for_o their_o good_a that_o they_o shall_v not_o perish_v with_o the_o world_n and_o that_o these_o his_o chastisement_n notwithstanding_o upon_o their_o repentance_n he_o will_v be_v ever_o ready_a counterfeit_n and_o outward_a show_n of_o hypocrite_n who_o sanctity_n and_o devotion_n be_v only_o outward_a glorious_a indeed_o they_o appear_v in_o the_o outward_a show_n like_o paint_a sepulcher_n but_o if_o they_o look_v inward_o unto_o the_o heart_n there_o be_v nothing_o to_o be_v find_v but_o rottenness_n and_o corruption_n so_o that_o it_o may_v easy_o be_v there_o see_v that_o the_o ruin_n of_o old_a adam_n be_v not_o yet_o again_o repair_v in_o they_o look_v therefore_o i_o will_v advise_v thou_o not_o unto_o the_o outward_a appearance_n be_v it_o never_o so_o glorious_a and_o goodly_a but_o look_v into_o thy_o soul_n the_o inward_a part_n and_o look_v so_o near_o as_o thou_o can_v into_o every_o corner_n thereof_o and_o see_v if_o thou_o can_v find_v the_o rubbish_n of_o again_o upon_o thou_o which_o if_o thou_o can_v see_v and_o perceive_v then_o assure_v thyself_o that_o this_o testimony_n be_v in_o deed_n the_o undoubted_a and_o infallible_a wunesse_fw-fr and_o testimony_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n three_o thou_o may_v know_v and_o discern_v it_o by_o the_o constancy_n and_o certainty_n of_o the_o testimony_n that_o it_o give_v for_o it_o be_v not_o like_o the_o waver_a &_o unsteadfast_a flash_n of_o hypocrite_n which_o think_v marvelous_a well_o of_o themselves_o slatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o for_o a_o time_n in_o a_o blind_a conceit_n that_o they_o be_v in_o the_o number_n of_o god_n elect_n but_o can_v grow_v indeed_o to_o any_o continual_a or_o certain_a resolution_n therein_o but_o this_o spirit_n if_o it_o have_v liberty_n to_o speak_v and_o be_v attentive_o hearken_v unto_o yield_v forth_o a_o full_a and_o a_o settle_a persuasion_n of_o the_o truth_n of_o our_o election_n in_o christ_n i_o say_v if_o it_o have_v liberty_n to_o speak_v and_o be_v attentive_o hear_v for_o that_o it_o oftentimes_o fall_v out_o with_o the_o faithful_a that_o though_o they_o have_v this_o certain_a witness_n within_o they_o yet_o the_o flesh_n sometime_o get_v the_o head_n and_o mastery_n over_o the_o spirit_n in_o they_o will_v not_o suffer_v it_o to_o speak_v so_o plain_o as_o it_o will_v and_o they_o also_o be_v thereupon_o trouble_v with_o this_o frailty_n which_o they_o find_v in_o themselves_o do_v often_o fall_v into_o many_o waver_a and_o doubt_v thought_n while_o they_o do_v not_o listen_v attentive_o unto_o this_o witness_n of_o the_o spirit_n that_o now_o seem_v to_o speak_v more_o cold_o and_o with_o a_o low_a and_o less_o audible_a voice_n unto_o their_o soul_n than_o heretofore_o for_o certain_a it_o be_v that_o though_o the_o spirit_n do_v always_o witness_n and_o give_v also_o a_o most_o certain_a and_o constant_a witness_n for_o it_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o always_o in_o the_o like_a measure_n to_o the_o discern_a of_o our_o soul_n but_o sometime_o more_o evident_o and_o sometime_o less_o yea_o and_o that_o sometime_o also_o so_o obscure_o as_o that_o the_o child_n of_o god_n while_o they_o be_v too_o much_o busy_v otherways_o in_o harken_v unto_o the_o suggestion_n of_o satan_n the_o world_n and_o the_o flesh_n they_o do_v seem_v as_o though_o they_o hear_v it_o not_o at_o all_o wherefore_o if_o thou_o have_v once_o feel_v and_o find_v this_o testimony_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o thou_o let_v it_o suffice_v thou_o and_o be_v therewith_o content_a his_o testimony_n once_o give_v be_v of_o great_a force_n for_o that_o as_o i_o have_v say_v he_o can_v lie_v therefore_o i_o say_v if_o at_o any_o time_n it_o have_v witness_v the_o same_o unto_o thou_o seal_v it_o up_o for_o a_o most_o certain_a truth_n for_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n which_o lead_v we_o to_o all_o truth_n speak_v nothing_o but_o truth_n have_v speak_v that_o be_v give_v never_o so_o secret_a and_o small_a a_o testimony_n yet_o do_v not_o thou_o misdoubt_v it_o for_o even_o this_o be_v as_o sure_a as_o a_o thousand_o other_o clamorous_a and_o loud_a witness_n to_o confirm_v the_o truth_n of_o thy_o election_n and_o be_v further_o assure_v of_o this_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o in_o any_o wise_a reject_v this_o testimony_n though_o it_o seem_v in_o thy_o eye_n but_o simple_a and_o slender_a without_o exceed_a injury_n offer_v unto_o the_o spirit_n of_o truth_n four_o in_o the_o manner_n also_o of_o the_o effect_v this_o certain_a witness_n and_o testimony_n thou_o may_v discern_v it_o to_o be_v the_o testimony_n of_o this_o spirit_n of_o regeneration_n and_o adoption_n for_o it_o be_v whole_o and_o full_o in_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n even_o by_o by_o assure_v thy_o soul_n and_o conscience_n that_o christ_n with_o all_o his_o benefit_n be_v thou_o and_o that_o in_o and_o through_o he_o and_o he_o alone_o thou_o be_v become_v the_o adopt_a child_n of_o god_n and_o heir_n of_o everlasting_a glory_n now_o whereas_o by_o thy_o question_n move_v thou_o seem_v to_o doubt_v of_o the_o truth_n of_o this_o testimony_n whether_o it_o be_v of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o not_o i_o answer_v further_o be_v it_o any_o thing_n likely_a that_o satan_n will_v ever_o persuade_v any_o man_n of_o this_o assurance_n of_o such_o incomparable_a benefit_n as_o christ_n by_o his_o death_n have_v purchase_v for_o his_o elect_n will_v he_o ever_o persuade_v man_n that_o in_o christ_n we_o be_v make_v the_o adopt_a child_n of_o god_n no_o i_o assure_v you_o that_o be_v far_o from_o satan_n purpose_n he_o know_v that_o this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n serve_v not_o to_o advance_v but_o utter_o to_o overthrow_v his_o kingdom_n and_o therefore_o labour_v what_o he_o may_v to_o suppress_v the_o public_a preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o this_o kind_n of_o doctrine_n shall_v be_v hide_v from_o the_o knowledge_n of_o man_n so_o far_o be_v he_o off_o from_o further_a of_o the_o inward_a application_n of_o the_o same_o unto_o the_o comfort_n of_o our_o soul_n wherein_o the_o virtue_n of_o christ_n his_o death_n consist_v therefore_o if_o at_o any_o time_n the_o hypocrite_n do_v flatter_v and_o persuade_v themselves_o in_o their_o election_n it_o be_v not_o whole_o alone_o and_o principal_o in_o christ_n &_o from_o his_o death_n &_o passion_n that_o this_o persuasion_n arise_v but_o upon_o some_o other_o good_a like_n &_o cocker_a affection_n that_o they_o have_v unto_o their_o feign_a and_o hypocritical_a devotion_n while_o they_o take_v such_o slight_a and_o slender_a trial_n and_o examination_n of_o themselves_o final_o this_o witness_n may_v be_v know_v by_o two_o notable_a and_o excellent_a effect_n attendant_a and_o wait_a upon_o the_o same_o first_o that_o the_o spirit_n do_v hereby_o shed_v abroad_o in_o our_o heart_n 5.5_o rom._n 5.5_o the_o love_n of_o god_n towards_o we_o in_o christ_n jesus_n for_o it_o make_v we_o to_o have_v a_o certain_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n towards_o us._n second_o upon_o this_o follow_v another_o effect_n and_o that_o be_v that_o upon_o this_o sense_n of_o love_n and_o shed_v of_o his_o tender_a mercy_n in_o our_o heart_n to_o the_o taste_n and_o feel_n of_o our_o soul_n it_o cause_v we_o withal_o to_o cry_v and_o call_v upon_o he_o by_o the_o name_n of_o father_n for_o now_o when_o we_o thus_o feel_v his_o love_n and_o mercy_n whether_o we_o cast_v our_o eye_n downward_o upon_o ourselves_o or_o upward_o upon_o the_o face_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n we_o see_v and_o behold_v he_o still_o as_o a_o gracious_a love_a merciful_a and_o compassionate_a father_n reconcile_v to_o we_o by_o and_o of_o god_n hatred_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v so_o in_o thou_o too_o answ_n this_o argument_n can_v hold_v for_o that_o which_o be_v sometime_o so_o will_v neither_o bear_v a_o general_a so_o and_o therefore_o so_o at_o all_o time_n it_o be_v so_o in_o some_o and_o therefore_o so_o in_o all_o or_o it_o be_v so_o in_o judas_n the_o traitor_n ergo_fw-la it_o be_v so_o in_o peter_n or_o some_o one_o other_o of_o the_o apostle_n as_o though_o that_o which_o be_v affirm_v true_o of_o the_o one_o must_v of_o necessity_n without_o exception_n be_v verify_v of_o another_o let_v satan_n therefore_o first_o prove_v this_o his_o proposition_n to_o be_v general_o true_a that_o be_v that_o these_o affliction_n do_v always_o come_v from_o the_o hatred_n of_o god_n or_o else_o this_o and_o to_o pass_v that_o as_o in_o many_o other_o so_o even_o in_o this_o reason_n also_o he_o very_o slight_o pass_v over_o the_o matter_n by_o the_o crafty_a confusion_n of_o word_n of_o diverse_a signification_n as_o though_o they_o signify_v and_o import_v one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o thing_n and_o therefore_o the_o rather_o and_o soon_o to_o deceive_v either_o thou_o or_o any_o other_o god_n have_v distinguish_v can_v the_o wind_n stir_v and_o move_v but_o it_o must_v needs_o be_v a_o tempest_n can_v the_o sun_n be_v dim_v with_o a_o cloud_n but_o it_o must_v utter_o lose_v his_o light_n and_o can_v god_n he_o angry_a and_o displease_v but_o he_o must_v needs_o hate_v and_o final_o cast_v away_o for_o ever_o be_v there_o no_o mean_a to_o be_v have_v none_o easy_o way_n to_o be_v find_v must_v all_o of_o mere_a necessity_n and_o of_o force_n be_v stretch_v on_o the_o rack_n of_o extremity_n indeed_o satan_n will_v have_v it_o so_o and_o thereunto_o go_v about_o by_o this_o his_o subtle_a reason_n to_o persuade_v but_o yet_o god_n spirit_n do_v teach_v we_o far_o otherwise_o that_o god_n show_v himself_o to_o be_v angry_a and_o displease_v with_o many_o of_o his_o servant_n and_o dear_a child_n who_o notwithstanding_o he_o hate_v not_o but_o most_o dear_o love_v that_o he_o oftentimes_o have_v not_o only_o threaten_v but_o also_o actual_o execute_v punishment_n upon_o they_o from_o who_o he_o also_o promise_v that_o he_o will_v not_o take_v away_o his_o mercy_n for_o ever_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n by_o the_o example_n of_o david_n hezechiah_n and_o many_o other_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v prove_v to_o be_v as_o certain_a as_o that_o which_o be_v most_o certain_a and_o therefore_o even_o in_o this_o point_n as_o in_o all_o his_o other_o satan_n be_v find_v to_o be_v a_o liar_n &_o his_o reason_n to_o be_v of_o no_o force_n for_o that_o so_o subtle_o he_o make_v no_o distinction_n and_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o hatred_n and_o anger_n of_o god_n as_o though_o they_o be_v indifferent_a time_n of_o one_o nature_n and_o of_o one_o signification_n and_o therefore_o if_o in_o any_o place_n he_o find_v these_o affliction_n to_o proceed_v of_o anger_n he_o straightway_o infer_v that_o it_o be_v of_o hatred_n as_o though_o god_n hate_v all_o those_o with_o who_o and_o that_o most_o just_o he_o be_v displease_v which_o be_v not_o so_o as_o have_v be_v show_v god_n in_o some_o sort_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v angry_a with_o his_o child_n and_o in_o anger_n to_o afflict_v and_o punish_v they_o nothing_o but_o sin_n alone_o he_o hate_v not_o their_o person_n as_o he_o be_v say_v to_o hate_v the_o person_n of_o the_o reprobate_n but_o yet_o god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v angry_a with_o his_o elect_n that_o be_v he_o may_v have_v a_o will_n to_o punish_v sin_n in_o they_o in_o what_o manner_n it_o please_v he_o and_o he_o may_v lay_v his_o temporal_a punishment_n upon_o they_o as_o be_v displease_v with_o their_o sin_n and_o offence_n and_o yet_o be_v still_o in_o love_n affect_v towards_o they_o as_o the_o father_n that_o be_v incense_v to_o anger_n against_o his_o son_n that_o mercy_n and_o all_o these_o be_v the_o notable_a and_o undoubted_a fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o most_o certain_a argument_n and_o evident_a token_n that_o true_a faith_n although_o not_o in_o her_o full_a perfection_n be_v sure_o seat_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o he_o that_o have_v they_o god_n a_o taste_n &_o comfortable_a feel_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n four_o after_o all_o these_o they_o grow_v by_o little_a and_o little_a to_o have_v some_o taste_n and_o comfortable_a feel_n of_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n impart_v to_o they_o by_o the_o inward_a work_n of_o god_n spirit_n insomuch_o that_o every_o day_n more_o and_o more_o they_o grow_v to_o conquer_v &_o subdue_v the_o despair_a thought_n of_o the_o flesh_n and_o the_o motion_n thereof_o and_o the_o comfortable_a influence_n of_o the_o spirit_n seem_v every_o day_n more_o than_o other_o to_o have_v a_o large_a and_o free_a passage_n in_o the_o chamber_n of_o their_o heart_n in_o testify_v unto_o they_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n in_o the_o free_a remission_n of_o sin_n and_o the_o performance_n of_o the_o work_n of_o their_o adoption_n five_o after_o all_o these_o ensue_v that_o full_a assurance_n and_o most_o notable_a effect_n of_o faith_n conscience_n peace_n of_o conscience_n even_o the_o very_a peace_n of_o conscience_n for_o that_o now_o they_o be_v assure_o and_o full_o resolve_v other_o weak_a christian_n doubt_v they_o have_v faith_n because_o they_o find_v it_o not_o to_o be_v so_o strong_a in_o themselves_o as_o they_o perceive_v it_o to_o be_v in_o other_o that_o all_o their_o sin_n be_v wash_v away_o in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n that_o by_o his_o death_n the_o wrath_n of_o god_n be_v appease_v their_o ransom_n pay_v the_o righteousness_n of_o christ_n by_o imputation_n make_v they_o the_o fear_n of_o death_n and_o hell_n abolish_v and_o life_n eternal_a purchase_v after_o this_o doctrine_n in_o the_o course_n and_o manner_n of_o man_n conversion_n thus_o deliver_v let_v we_o now_o return_v again_o unto_o the_o break_a and_o afflict_a soul_n which_o doubt_v of_o the_o want_n of_o faith_n and_o withal_o let_v we_o see_v and_o sift_v the_o reason_n why_o he_o thus_o despayr_v of_o his_o faith_n and_o think_v and_o persuade_v himself_o that_o he_o have_v no_o faith_n at_o all_o his_o reason_n be_v this_o because_o he_o do_v not_o find_v within_o himself_o as_o yet_o that_o certainty_n and_o full_a assurance_n of_o salvation_n which_o he_o see_v and_o perceive_v to_o be_v in_o other_o this_o reason_n although_o it_o seem_v to_o he_o very_o strong_a yet_o in_o itself_o it_o be_v but_o weak_a and_o be_v thorough_o examine_v can_v hold_v nor_o stand_v for_o good_a for_o this_o full_a assurance_n whereupon_o he_o ground_v his_o reason_n be_v not_o faith_n as_o some_o have_v define_v faith_n say_v faith_n be_v a_o full_a assurance_n but_o rather_o one_o notable_a and_o undoubted_a effect_n of_o faith_n and_o yet_o not_o always_o so_o atttend_v upon_o and_o my_o reason_n be_v because_o this_o assurance_n be_v not_o the_o first_o effect_n that_o faith_n ever_o bring_v forth_o in_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n when_o it_o be_v begin_v to_o be_v ingraft_v in_o he_o but_o it_o have_v many_o other_o excellent_a effect_n precedent_n and_o go_v before_o it_o as_o the_o true_a and_o hearty_a mourning_n for_o sin_n that_o earnest_a loathe_n and_o hatred_n of_o sin_n and_o a_o thirst_a and_o long_v after_o righteousness_n etc._n etc._n which_o be_v often_o find_v in_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n before_o such_o time_n as_o they_o receive_v this_o caline_z and_o peace_n of_o conscience_n and_o joy_n in_o the_o holy_a ghost_n by_o the_o full_a assurance_n of_o their_o salvation_n now_o to_o prove_v these_o to_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o attendant_n of_o true_a faith_n the_o rather_o to_o qualify_v and_o allay_v the_o sharp_a and_o bitter_a combat_n of_o the_o trouble_a soul_n let_v we_o diligent_o consider_v first_n the_o principal_a efficient_a cause_n and_o worker_n of_o this_o sorrow_n and_o mourning_n which_o i_o speak_v of_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o regeneration_n and_o adoption_n for_o this_o cause_n the_o apostle_n call_v it_o a_o 3.2_o whereupon_o it_o also_o follow_v that_o of_o necessity_n it_o can_v none_o otherwise_o be_v but_o where_o this_o earnest_a sorrow_n and_o earnest_a loathe_n and_o detestation_n of_o sin_n be_v find_v there_o also_o faith_n shall_v be_v ingraff_v because_o otherwise_o this_o spirit_n of_o adoption_n which_o effect_v these_o in_o we_o can_v not_o be_v entertain_v in_o our_o heart_n second_o thereof_o for_o if_o he_o see_v it_o but_o chit_v in_o the_o ground_n he_o rest_v patient_o for_o the_o time_n content_v expect_v and_o look_v for_o a_o happy_a and_o a_o plentiful_a harvest_n in_o that_o even_o the_o reprobate_n also_o come_v to_o god_n and_o be_v bold_a to_o crave_v remission_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n as_o often_o as_o they_o say_v but_o the_o lord_n prayer_n which_o with_o many_o of_o they_o be_v full_a oft_o and_o every_o day_n answ_n whereunto_o may_v be_v answer_v 29.13_o esay_n 29.13_o that_o this_o be_v not_o to_o come_v and_o approach_v to_o god_n for_o though_o with_o their_o mouth_n they_o draw_v near_o and_o honour_n god_n with_o their_o lip_n yet_o their_o heart_n be_v far_o away_o neither_o do_v their_o prayer_n howsoever_o they_o make_v a_o outward_a show_n proceed_v from_o any_o good_a affection_n of_o the_o heart_n as_o have_v a_o desire_n and_o longing_n to_o obtain_v the_o thing_n which_o they_o pray_v for_o but_o only_o be_v hypocritical_o use_v for_o a_o show_n and_o fashion_n sake_n and_o therefore_o do_v not_o in_o truth_n deserve_v the_o name_n of_o prayer_n since_o it_o be_v only_o outwardlabour_v of_o the_o lip_n sort_n all_o they_o do_v which_o be_v thorough_o break_v under_o sin_n in_o their_o heart_n do_v loath_a it_o be_v weary_a of_o it_o desire_v to_o be_v release_v and_o free_v from_o it_o and_o therefore_o do_v earnest_o pray_v to_o have_v it_o pardon_v think_v nothing_o to_o they_o so_o joyful_a as_o to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o bondage_n thereof_o as_o for_o the_o other_o concern_v who_o this_o objection_n be_v make_v although_o they_o can_v make_v a_o great_a show_n of_o sorrow_n for_o their_o sin_n &_o that_o they_o pray_v to_o god_n for_o forgiveness_n of_o the_o same_o and_o flesh_n and_o so_o prohibit_v and_o forbid_v unto_o man_n but_o it_o be_v to_o be_v just_o account_v among_o the_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o give_v in_o charge_n &_o commandment_n unto_o man_n against_o his_o imperfection_n and_o prick_v of_o his_o flesh_n moreover_o with_o this_o hatred_n be_v also_o to_o be_v join_v a_o shame_n and_o confusion_n in_o the_o person_n repentant_a because_o of_o sin_n and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o man_n for_o so_o the_o very_a hypocrite_n be_v ashamed_a of_o their_o sin_n and_o therefore_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_v possible_a to_o hide_v and_o
keep_v they_o from_o the_o sight_n and_o knowledge_n of_o man_n but_o in_o regard_n of_o god_n and_o in_o consideration_n of_o the_o filthiness_n of_o the_o sin_n itself_o and_o so_o become_v as_o man_n daunt_v in_o themselves_o that_o ever_o they_o be_v so_o ungracious_a to_o commit_v such_o filthiness_n and_o iniquity_n whereby_o their_o so_o gracious_a a_o god_n shall_v be_v offend_v and_o be_v bountiful_a in_o pray_v very_o devout_a in_o fast_v very_o religious_a and_o holy_a there_o be_v no_o godly_a exercise_n of_o christian_n to_o be_v use_v wherein_o they_o will_v be_v find_v inferior_a to_o any_o yea_o even_o judas_n that_o traitor_n pretend_v a_o care_n to_o the_o good_a of_o the_o poor_a account_v that_o precious_a ointment_n when_o it_o be_v pour_v on_o his_o master_n to_o be_v spend_v in_o waste_n and_o will_v that_o it_o have_v be_v sell_v and_o give_v to_o the_o poor_a 12._o john_n 12._o but_o as_o john_n the_o apostle_n testiii_v of_o judas_n that_o he_o speak_v that_o not_o that_o he_o care_v for_o the_o poor_a but_o because_o he_o be_v a_o thief_n and_o bare_a the_o bag_n so_o may_v i_o say_v of_o these_o man_n they_o love_v virtue_n not_o because_o command_v and_o approve_v but_o their_o love_n be_v ground_v upon_o some_o other_o external_a cause_n as_o worldly_a profit_n pleasure_n friend_n fear_v of_o danger_n respect_v to_o please_v some_o person_n care_v to_o purchase_v and_o get_v the_o praise_n and_o commendation_n of_o man_n rather_o than_o of_o god_n and_o such_o like_a or_o else_o because_o they_o see_v that_o thus_o a_o mean_a be_v as_o it_o be_v purchase_v whereby_o they_o may_v the_o better_a cover_n and_o conceal_v their_o sin_n &_o hide_v from_o man_n their_o unjust_a and_o wicked_a life_n and_o thus_o they_o love_v not_o godliness_n for_o itself_o but_o for_o these_o respect_n may_v just_o be_v say_v to_o love_v these_o thing_n rather_o than_o to_o have_v any_o love_n and_o affection_n unto_o goodness_n but_o it_o be_v far_o nay_o clean_a contrary_n in_o the_o true_a servant_n of_o the_o lord_n as_o have_v be_v though_o somewhat_o brief_o touch_v before_o chap._n xiii_o of_o the_o application_n of_o the_o former_a thing_n to_o the_o comfont_n of_o the_o sorrowful_a soul_n now_o to_o the_o end_n that_o some_o fruit_n may_v grow_v to_o the_o distress_a party_n of_o these_o thing_n thus_o utter_v i_o the_o shift_n which_o satan_n use_v to_o disgrace_n and_o discredit_v the_o truth_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o if_o it_o do_v lie_v in_o his_o power_n by_o that_o mean_v utter_o to_o hinder_v the_o course_n and_o proceed_n of_o the_o same_o as_o he_o have_v in_o all_o age_n even_o from_o the_o beginning_n show_v himself_o a_o serpent_n of_o great_a subtlety_n in_o this_o behalf_n so_o not_o forgetful_a of_o his_o own_o nature_n he_o be_v bold_a even_o here_o to_o show_v himself_o according_o and_o so_o work_v oftentimes_o nay_o too_o too_o oft_o and_o that_o in_o many_o that_o although_o the_o doctrine_n utter_v be_v never_o so_o plain_a never_o so_o profitable_a yet_o he_o so_o handle_v the_o matter_n that_o either_o none_o or_o very_o small_a prdfit_n shall_v be_v take_v thereof_o nay_o he_o so_o compass_v the_o matter_n that_o of_o that_o whereof_o man_n shall_v reap_v profit_n to_o his_o consolation_n be_v cause_v they_o to_o gather_v poison_n to_o their_o utter_a desolation_n and_o to_o the_o furtherance_n of_o this_o his_o purpose_n against_o this_o doctrine_n he_o here_o frame_v a_o dangerous_a objection_n in_o manner_n as_o follow_v object_n i_o confess_v say_v the_o person_n in_o soul_n distress_a that_o the_o doctrine_n which_o you_o have_v deliver_v concern_v faith_n &_o concern_v repentance_n be_v true_a indeed_o your_o discourse_n thereof_o be_v good_a &_o godly_a but_o yet_o you_o yourself_o do_v know_v i_o need_v not_o to_o declare_v it_o unto_o you_o that_o this_o your_o discourse_n of_o these_o two_o point_n be_v a_o further_o and_o with_o death_n of_o friend_n sometime_o with_o loss_n of_o good_n and_o cattle_n sometime_o after_o one_o sort_n and_o sometime_o after_o another_o but_o all_o to_o this_o end_n that_o so_o he_o may_v make_v he_o more_o mindful_a of_o he_o and_o more_o careful_a to_o show_v forth_o his_o love_a obedience_n towards_o he_o this_o also_o by_o a_o similitude_n may_v very_o well_o be_v confirm_v unto_o us._n shall_v the_o physician_n be_v say_v to_o hate_v his_o patient_a when_o as_o he_o give_v and_o minister_v unto_o he_o a_o strong_a and_o sharp_a purgation_n to_o recover_v he_o or_o shall_v they_o and_o this_o not_o that_o they_o shall_v perish_v as_o satan_n will_v infer_v but_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v preserve_v and_o not_o perish_v with_o the_o world_n so_o that_o if_o we_o endure_v this_o his_o chastisement_n he_o be_v so_o far_o from_o cast_v we_o off_o that_o as_o he_o have_v witness_v he_o offer_v himself_o unto_o we_o as_o unto_o son_n but_o if_o we_o be_v without_o it_o we_o be_v so_o far_o from_o love_n that_o we_o be_v not_o son_n 12.7.3_o heb._n 12.7.3_o but_o bastard_n and_o now_o see_v how_o thou_o may_v very_o effectual_o turn_v this_o argument_n of_o indeed_o judgement_n and_o god_n vengeance_n denounce_v and_o execute_v on_o god_n enemy_n and_o those_o against_o who_o his_o wrath_n and_o anger_n be_v incense_v and_o for_o confirmation_n hereof_o we_o may_v produce_v many_o example_n even_o out_o of_o the_o scripture_n but_o in_o a_o matter_n so_o apparent_a i_o think_v it_o needless_a by_o this_o objection_n thus_o frame_v and_o utter_v it_o evident_o appear_v that_o the_o forger_n thereof_o satan_n by_o name_n will_v be_v a_o serpent_n still_o of_o great_a subtlety_n still_o invent_v and_o forge_v new_a device_n to_o effect_v his_o devilish_a purpose_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v not_o to_o be_v marvel_v at_o if_o he_o thus_o begin_v to_o make_v assault_n upon_o thou_o in_o this_o manner_n by_o force_n of_o this_o objection_n the_o first_o grant_v we_o our_o petitition_n and_o let_v we_o therefore_o hold_v this_o one_o rule_n continual_o in_o mind_n and_o print_v it_o deep_a in_o our_o heart_n that_o it_o be_v in_o the_o hand_n of_o the_o lord_n to_o afflict_v at_o his_o pleasure_n to_o continue_v the_o same_o upon_o his_o servant_n as_o he_o will_n it_o be_v our_o part_n in_o this_o time_n of_o our_o trouble_n yea_o and_o out_o of_o trouble_n also_o to_o cry_v unto_o god_n and_o to_o call_v upon_o he_o and_o it_o be_v in_o the_o power_n and_o will_n of_o god_n only_o to_o set_v down_o and_o appoint_v the_o time_n of_o our_o help_n and_o deliverance_n and_o by_o this_o rule_n stand_v upon_o these_o four_o point_n we_o shall_v easy_o avoid_v the_o danger_n of_o this_o temptation_n of_o the_o enemy_n oh_o objection_n satan_n objection_n say_v satan_n how_o then_o stand_v this_o with_o the_o nature_n of_o god_n who_o be_v say_v to_o be_v merciful_a love_a and_o compassionate_a unto_o his_o child_n be_v this_o love_n and_o be_v this_o his_o tender_a mercy_n to_o see_v his_o child_n to_o lie_v and_o continue_v thus_o afflict_v to_o hear_v they_o thus_o lamentable_o to_o cry_v for_o help_v and_o in_o such_o woeful_a manner_n to_o sue_v for_o succour_n &_o yet_o he_o to_o withdraw_v himself_o and_o not_o to_o deliver_v they_o this_o be_v very_o hard_a and_o a_o thing_n far_o unbefit_v the_o person_n of_o god_n answ_n the_o shameless_a boldness_n of_o this_o our_o adversary_n be_v here_o evident_o to_o be_v see_v together_o with_o the_o maliciousness_n of_o his_o heart_n in_o that_o he_o be_v so_o bold_a to_o pry_v into_o god_n do_n call_v they_o into_o question_n and_o to_o dispute_v and_o reason_n how_o and_o which_o way_n god_n deal_v and_o dispose_v of_o his_o child_n and_o also_o great_o to_o endanger_v the_o simple_a by_o his_o subtlety_n and_o to_o breathe_v out_o most_o horrible_a blasphemy_n against_o the_o person_n of_o god_n most_o crafty_o insinuate_v by_o his_o objection_n that_o either_o god_n be_v unwilling_a or_o else_o unable_a to_o deliver_v his_o servant_n when_o they_o cry_v unto_o he_o for_o thus_o much_o do_v his_o speech_n concern_v the_o nature_n of_o god_n use_v in_o his_o objection_n import_n but_o what_o be_v thou_o thou_o enemy_n of_o god_n and_o all_o godliness_n that_o thou_o shall_v presume_v to_o judge_v of_o mercy_n which_o art_n never_o to_o come_v within_o the_o compass_n thereof_o nor_o to_o be_v partaker_n thereof_o at_o all_o be_v mercy_n only_o resiant_a in_o the_o speedy_a release_n of_o misery_n and_o affliction_n or_o be_v compassion_n tie_v and_o bind_v as_o thou_o will_v persuade_v to_o the_o grant_n of_o every_o suit_n though_o it_o be_v untimely_a that_o be_v before_o god_n appoint_a time_n and_o season_n no_o no_o god_n mercy_n and_o compassion_n as_o have_v be_v before_o sufficient_o prove_v be_v to_o be_v order_v after_o the_o wisdom_n of_o god_n himself_o both_o for_o the_o time_n and_o also_o for_o the_o manner_n of_o extend_v the_o same_o and_o not_o in_o such_o course_n as_o thou_o will_v prescribe_v he_o that_o sometime_o and_o in_o some_o case_n spare_v the_o rod_n do_v he_o he_o hate_v the_o child_n god_n account_v his_o correction_n to_o be_v argument_n and_o token_n of_o his_o love_n and_o mercy_n towards_o his_o child_n whatsoever_o thou_o do_v prate_v and_o babble_n to_o the_o contrary_a and_o strive_v to_o make_v man_n believe_v that_o his_o chastisement_n and_o correction_n do_v betoken_v another_o thing_n that_o be_v the_o bar_v and_o deprivation_n of_o the_o servant_n of_o god_n of_o his_o mercy_n love_n and_o favour_n thus_o we_o may_v now_o see_v how_o great_o god_n our_o most_o love_a father_n and_o satan_n our_o most_o deadly_a and_o pernicious_a enemy_n do_v differ_v concern_v the_o use_n and_o end_n of_o affliction_n and_o also_o the_o right_a judgement_n concern_v mercy_n love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n so_o that_o rest_v ourselves_o whole_o on_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n in_o his_o son_n christ_n we_o shall_v stop_v our_o ear_n unto_o these_o persuasion_n of_o our_o most_o malicious_a enemy_n and_o utter_o abandon_v whatsoever_o he_o shall_v persuade_v contrary_a to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n this_o might_n indeed_o suffice_v to_o show_v the_o insufficiency_n of_o this_o conclusion_n of_o satan_n and_o to_o establish_v the_o weakling_n in_o the_o truth_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o god_n but_o that_o the_o trouble_a soul_n will_v still_o be_v move_v of_o question_n and_o often_o fall_v to_o the_o iteration_n and_o repetition_n of_o one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n not_o regard_v what_o they_o say_v so_o they_o may_v be_v know_v to_o say_v somewhat_o and_o in_o this_o mauner_n they_o move_v their_o question_n quest._n how_o can_v this_o be_v that_o god_n shall_v be_v account_v merciful_a when_o he_o thus_o stop_v his_o ear_n and_o refuse_v to_o bear_v the_o cry_n of_o his_o servant_n when_o he_o thus_o wink_v and_o shut_v up_o his_o eye_n that_o he_o will_v not_o see_v and_o behold_v their_o woeful_a estate_n that_o he_o may_v take_v compassion_n on_o they_o who_o will_v ever_o lay_v these_o calamity_n misery_n and_o affliction_n upon_o those_o who_o he_o love_v and_o who_o will_v tolerate_v these_o extremity_n without_o release_n and_o ease_n upon_o those_o to_o who_o in_o grace_n and_o mercy_n he_o be_v affect_v as_o unto_o his_o dear_a child_n answ_n this_o question_n whereby_o satan_n in_o the_o weak_a and_o distress_a soul_n will_v have_v his_o temptation_n to_o be_v strengthen_v be_v as_o you_o see_v all_o one_o with_o that_o which_o we_o hear_v before_o and_o therefore_o the_o very_a same_o answer_n may_v very_o well_o befit_v they_o both_o it_o be_v before_o prove_v sufficient_o that_o affliction_n and_o correction_n lay_v upon_o god_n child_n do_v proceed_v and_o come_v of_o love_n yet_o you_o be_v not_o satisfy_v herewith_o but_o fall_v again_o or_o rather_o continue_v still_o in_o your_o former_a mind_n curious_o dernand_v how_o this_o may_v be_v the_o case_n be_v easy_a and_o the_o question_n will_v be_v satisfy_v with_o a_o slender_a resolution_n if_o you_o do_v but_o remember_v what_o be_v say_v before_o but_o i_o see_v and_o perceive_v your_o heart_n and_o mind_n be_v otherwise_o occupy_v and_o therefore_o your_o eye_n do_v continue_v still_o fix_v and_o bend_v upon_o your_o present_a pang_n and_o misery_n but_o never_o look_v unto_o the_o end_n which_o be_v replenish_v with_o so_o great_a joy_n and_o peace_n do_v not_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o god_n do_v therefore_o in_o this_o sort_n here_o in_o this_o world_n correct_v and_o afflict_v his_o child_n 11.32_o 1._o cor._n 11.32_o that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v with_o the_o world_n etc._n luk._n 16.19_o etc._n etc._n lazarus_n live_v here_o in_o great_a misery_n when_o the_o rich_a glutton_n fare_v delicate_o yet_o be_v lazarus_n belove_v of_o god_n and_o the_o rich_a glutton_n otherwise_o as_o the_o end_n do_v evident_o prove_v be_v it_o not_o think_v you_o love_v in_o the_o physician_n towards_o his_o patient_n when_o he_o take_v the_o ready_a way_n to_o recover_v he_o from_o the_o danger_n of_o death_n although_o it_o be_v by_o such_o strong_a medicine_n which_o he_o know_v in_o their_o operation_n and_o work_a will_n will_v torment_v his_o patient_n for_o the_o time_n and_o that_o very_a sore_n it_o be_v sure_o a_o great_a argument_n of_o love_n in_o the_o physician_n that_o have_v such_o a_o care_n of_o the_o good_a estate_n of_o his_o patient_n and_o be_v we_o not_o likewise_o to_o judge_v of_o our_o heavenly_a physician_n and_o to_o be_v full_o persuade_v of_o his_o great_a love_n that_o he_o bear_v unto_o his_o servant_n that_o when_o he_o see_v they_o ready_a of_o themselves_o to_o be_v plunge_v into_o the_o pit_n of_o sin_n and_o so_o to_o be_v make_v partaker_n of_o condemnation_n do_v use_v these_o momentany_a affliction_n although_o they_o appear_v bitter_a for_o a_o time_n unto_o
as_o belong_v and_o appertain_v to_o themselves_o true_a faith_n therefore_o have_v always_o though_o not_o ever_o in_o the_o high_a measure_n this_o apply_v virtue_n annex_v with_o it_o as_o a_o essential_a property_n so_o that_o as_o in_o two_o member_n the_o one_o be_v dead_a the_o other_o quick_a and_o lively_a thou_o may_v easy_o discern_v which_o be_v lively_a by_o the_o live_n and_o vital_a motion_n in_o minister_a and_o serve_v unto_o the_o necessary_a use_n of_o the_o body_n so_o by_o this_o lively_a motion_n wherein_o the_o life_n of_o faith_n in_o part_n appear_v thou_o may_v discern_v &_o know_v thy_o faith_n to_o be_v quick_a and_o live_a in_o that_o it_o do_v thus_o minister_v unto_o thy_o soul_n by_o apply_v the_o merit_n of_o christ_n and_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o the_o consolation_n and_o comfort_n thereof_o for_o which_o cause_n also_o this_o motion_n of_o faith_n be_v call_v sometime_o phronesis_n prudence_n or_o understanding_n because_o herein_o our_o faith_n do_v show_v forth_o and_o manifest_v a_o skill_n and_o discretion_n in_o make_v the_o use_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o knowledge_n we_o have_v attain_v as_o for_o that_o other_o faith_n of_o hypocrite_n hypecrite_n the_o faith_n of_o hypecrite_n that_o be_v inst_o compare_v to_o the_o dead_a member_n for_o that_o it_o want_v this_o motion_n of_o life_n it_o have_v not_o this_o strength_n to_o apprehend_v nor_o force_n and_o power_n to_o apply_v though_o otherwise_o he_o that_o have_v it_o seem_v to_o be_v sufficient_o instruct_v in_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o death_n and_o passion_n of_o christ_n for_o this_o faith_n indeed_o consist_v only_o in_o a_o bare_a and_o naked_a knowledge_n without_o any_o further_a use_n and_o therefore_o christ_n our_o saviour_n speak_v of_o this_o faith_n say_v indeed_o it_o receive_v the_o seed_n and_o the_o seed_n sprout_v and_o spring_v out_o again_o but_o yet_o it_o never_o bear_v fruit_n for_o these_o kind_n of_o man_n be_v know_v to_o be_v endue_v with_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o word_n and_o of_o the_o gospel_n and_o seem_v to_o have_v profit_v and_o proceed_v therein_o that_o they_o can_v discourse_v and_o reason_n of_o the_o same_o and_o that_o oftentimes_o very_o profound_o and_o learned_o but_o yet_o all_o this_o be_v nothing_o at_o all_o to_o the_o purpose_n for_o all_o this_o while_n they_o want_v the_o principal_a which_o be_v the_o fruit_n and_o use_v of_o these_o thing_n in_o particular_a application_n thereof_o unto_o their_o soul_n and_o if_o it_o so_o fall_v out_o that_o they_o find_v any_o joy_n within_o themselves_o in_o regard_n hereof_o as_o oftentimes_o they_o do_v right_n the_o joy_n of_o hypocrite_n compare_v to_o the_o joy_n of_o one_o that_o have_v find_v some_o treasure_n to_o which_o he_o have_v no_o good_a right_n yet_o it_o be_v but_o like_o the_o joy_n of_o one_o that_o walk_v forth_o have_v find_v a_o treasure_n or_o precious_a jewel_n that_o be_v lose_v he_o be_v glad_a and_o rejoice_v in_o himself_o at_o such_o a_o precious_a accident_n as_o though_o it_o be_v his_o own_o and_o that_o he_o have_v a_o good_a interest_n unto_o the_o same_o and_o yet_o he_o can_v in_o no_o wise_n assure_v himself_o that_o it_o be_v or_o shall_v be_v his_o good_n because_o be_v a_o thing_n lose_v it_o be_v likely_a the_o owner_n will_v make_v inquisition_n after_o it_o and_o then_o his_o conscience_n as_o good_a as_o a_o thousand_o witness_n in_o this_o case_n tell_v he_o that_o if_o the_o matter_n be_v well_o consider_v of_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n or_o cause_n of_o joy_n at_o all_o howsoever_o thus_o foolish_o and_o rash_o he_o conceive_v of_o it_o before_o so_o likewise_o the_o hypocrite_n have_v attain_v unto_o this_o knowledge_n of_o the_o mystery_n of_o life_n and_o thus_o light_v upon_o this_o most_o precious_a and_o most_o costly_a jewel_n of_o man_n redemption_n by_o and_o through_o the_o death_n of_o christ_n seem_v therein_o to_o joy_n and_o delight_v himself_o and_o yet_o when_o he_o have_v thorough_o try_v and_o examine_v himself_o he_o find_v that_o in_o very_a deed_n this_o jewel_n do_v not_o of_o right_a appertain_v unto_o he_o but_o to_o other_o and_o that_o not_o he_o but_o other_o may_v claim_v a_o right_n and_o interest_n unto_o the_o same_o chap._n xxxii_o of_o the_o effect_n whereby_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n may_v be_v know_v as_o by_o the_o nature_n effect_n 2._o true_a faith_n know_v by_o the_o effect_n so_o by_o the_o effect_n also_o the_o truth_n of_o faith_n may_v be_v discern_v and_o know_v in_o treat_v whereof_o my_o purpose_n be_v to_o fetch_v the_o ground_n of_o my_o discourse_n from_o the_o word_n of_o the_o apostle_n write_v in_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o sift_n chapter_n of_o the_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n 5._o rom._n 5.1_o 2_o 3_o 4_o 5._o where_o we_o read_v in_o this_o manner_n then_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n we_o have_v peace_n towards_o god_n through_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n by_o who_o also_o we_o have_v access_n through_o faith_n unto_o his_o grace_n wherein_o we_o stand_v and_o rejoice_v under_o the_o hope_n of_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n neither_o do_v we_o so_o only_o but_o we_o rejoice_v in_o tribulation_n know_v that_o tribulation_n bring_v forth_o patience_n etc._n etc._n unto_o the_o sixth_o verse_n of_o the_o same_o chapter_n in_o which_o word_n the_o apostle_n paul_n as_o we_o may_v plain_o see_v set_v down_o six_o notable_a fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o a_o true_a and_o justify_v faith_n for_o of_o such_o a_o faith_n only_o do_v the_o apostle_n there_o speak_v and_o this_o also_o may_v very_o well_o be_v prove_v and_o confirm_v by_o this_o namely_o that_o these_o fruit_n be_v such_o as_o do_v follow_v those_o that_o be_v justify_v and_o at_o that_o time_n only_o when_o as_o they_o be_v now_o already_o justify_v for_o so_o do_v the_o apostle_n word_n import_n be_v justify_v by_o faith_n than_o we_o have_v peace_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o these_o fruit_n and_o effect_n can_v never_o befall_v unto_o a_o counterfeit_n and_o false_a faith_n of_o the_o hypocrite_n and_o therefore_o be_v good_a and_o undoubted_a mark_n and_o token_n whereby_o we_o may_v know_v that_o faith_n to_o be_v a_o true_a faith_n and_o those_o to_o have_v a_o lively_a and_o a_o justify_n faith_n in_o who_o they_o do_v appear_v the_o first_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o this_o true_a and_o justify_v faith_n faith_n 1._o fruit_n of_o true_a faith_n be_v peace_n with_o god_n for_o be_v justify_v by_o faith_n say_v the_o apostle_n we_o have_v peace_n with_o god_n whereby_o be_v mean_v not_o only_o a_o reconcilement_n make_v in_o that_o god_n have_v remit_v and_o forgive_v our_o sin_n but_o also_o a_o inward_a and_o joyful_a sense_n and_o feel_n of_o the_o same_o in_o our_o heart_n and_o soul_n 1._o a_o twofold_a peace_n 1._o there_o be_v in_o the_o scripture_n a_o double_a peace_n from_o god_n set_v set_v down_o the_o one_o be_v that_o reconciliation_n and_o atonement_n wherewith_o god_n be_v pacify_v towards_o we_o and_o this_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o remission_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o our_o justification_n in_o christ_n and_o in_o this_o respect_n christ_n be_v say_v to_o preach_v peace_n 2.17_o ephes_n 2.17_o to_o they_o that_o be_v afar_o off_o and_o to_o they_o that_o be_v nigh_o and_o this_o be_v that_o peace_n which_o the_o angel_n bring_v news_n of_o unto_o the_o shepherd_n luke_n 2._o saying_n glory_n be_v to_o god_n on_o high_a 2.24.2_o luke_n 2.24.2_o and_o peace_n on_o earth_n the_o other_o peace_n be_v that_o which_o issue_v and_o proceed_v as_o a_o effect_n from_o the_o former_a and_o that_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o the_o feel_n and_o inward_a taste_n and_o assurance_n of_o the_o former_a peace_n and_o reconcilement_n and_o of_o this_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n here_o speak_v conscience_n peace_n of_o conscience_n this_o peace_n be_v common_o call_v the_o peace_n of_o conscience_n for_o the_o conscience_n that_o before_o be_v trouble_v and_o disquiet_v with_o the_o sight_n and_o horror_n of_o sin_n do_v now_o feel_v a_o certain_a peace_n and_o ease_n in_o that_o it_o have_v a_o certain_a taste_n and_o persuasion_n of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o of_o pardon_n and_o remission_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n in_o the_o blood_n of_o christ_n of_o this_o manner_n of_o peace_n speak_v our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o the_o fourteen_o of_o john_n my_o peace_n give_v i_o unto_o you_o 4.7_o joh._n 14.27_o phil._n 4.7_o and_o likewise_o the_o apostle_n paul_n phil._n 4.7_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n which_o pass_v all_o understanding_n shall_v preserve_v your_o heart_n and_o mind_n in_o christ_n jesus_n in_o which_o last_o word_n in_o christ_n jesus_n this_o be_v
to_o be_v note_v and_o observe_v which_o the_o apostle_n to_o the_o roman_n have_v not_o pretermit_v which_o be_v the_o mean_n whereby_o this_o peace_n work_v in_o we_o and_o that_o be_v by_o christ_n jesus_n for_o in_o he_o in_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n it_o place_v the_o fruit_n and_o fruition_n of_o this_o our_o remission_n and_o reconcilement_n at_o the_o hand_n of_o god_n so_o that_o this_o do_v in_o a_o sort_n intimate_v a_o mark_n of_o difference_n and_o distinction_n whereby_o a_o man_n may_v know_v whether_o this_o peace_n be_v true_a or_o not_o for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o in_o christ_n jesus_n that_o be_v if_o in_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n in_o his_o merit_n sacrifice_n and_o satisfaction_n thou_o have_v not_o this_o affurance_n of_o remission_n of_o thy_o sin_n and_o reconcilement_n unto_o god_n but_o seek_v it_o in_o some_o other_o thing_n whether_o it_o be_v in_o any_o ceremony_n and_o superstition_n thy_o own_o work_n and_o merit_n or_o the_o work_n and_o merit_n of_o any_o other_o except_o christ_n only_o and_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n thy_o peace_n be_v not_o true_a but_o a_o counterfeit_a peace_n and_o such_o as_o will_v deceive_v thou_o the_o second_o fruit_n of_o faith_n faith_n 2._o fruit_n of_o true_a faith_n be_v that_o which_o issue_v &_o proceed_v from_o this_o inward_a peace_n and_o that_o be_v a_o confidence_n and_o boldness_n to_o and_o in_o this_o sight_n and_o feel_n of_o god_n gracious_a and_o love_a countenance_n towards_o they_o in_o their_o heart_n and_o soul_n they_o be_v the_o more_o encourage_v to_o come_v and_o approach_v unto_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n and_o to_o crave_v pardon_n and_o remission_n of_o their_o sin_n at_o his_o hand_n this_o the_o apostle_n elsewhere_o call_v a_o boldness_n and_o entrance_n with_o confidence_n by_o faith_n in_o he_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n for_o without_o he_o no_o man_n can_v come_v or_o have_v access_n unto_o the_o father_n and_o therefore_o they_o that_o presume_v to_o come_v in_o their_o own_o name_n and_o worthiness_n with_o confidence_n in_o their_o own_o work_n and_o merit_n or_o in_o the_o work_n and_o merit_n of_o any_o other_o either_o saint_n or_o angel_n they_o can_v be_v just_o and_o true_o say_v to_o have_v access_n and_o approach_n unto_o grace_n but_o rather_o to_o depart_v and_o to_o flee_v the_o further_a from_o it_o 2.5_o 1._o
