term_v the_o wife_n of_o ezekiel_n 16._o the_o desire_n or_o delight_n of_o his_o eye_n because_o he_o delight_v in_o she_o and_o she_o be_v exceed_v dear_a unto_o he_o and_o true_o if_o a_o man_n exceed_v not_o the_o bound_n of_o civility_n and_o sobriety_n his_o affection_n towards_o his_o wife_n can_v be_v too_o great_a hiply_v thy_o wife_n be_v not_o so_o beautiful_a nor_o so_o delightful_a in_o herself_o as_o some_o other_o woman_n be_v yet_o as_o parent_n love_v and_o delight_n in_o their_o child_n not_o so_o much_o because_o they_o be_v comely_a witty_a or_o the_o like_a but_o because_o they_o be_v their_o child_n so_o thou_o ought_v to_o delight_v in_o thy_o wife_n not_o so_o much_o because_o she_o be_v beautiful_a wise_a or_o the_o like_a but_o because_o she_o be_v thy_o wife_n even_o the_o wife_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v allot_v unto_o thou_o believe_v she_o to_o be_v the_o fit_a wife_n for_o thou_o with_o who_o thou_o ought_v to_o rest_v satisfy_v 3_o by_o treat_v she_o mild_o the_o husband_n must_v show_v himself_o mild_a and_o gentle_a in_o all_o thing_n towards_o his_o wife_n this_o mildness_n be_v urge_v by_o the_o apostle_n under_o the_o contrary_a not_o capable_a of_o any_o good_a advice_n and_o as_o a_o husband_n in_o reprove_v his_o wife_n shall_v observe_v a_o fit_a time_n so_o likewise_o a_o fit_a place_n forbearing_z to_z do_v it_o open_o before_o child_n or_o servant_n but_o private_o between_o she_o and_o himself_o for_o her_o honour_n and_o credit_n be_v to_o be_v maintain_v before_o child_n and_o servant_n as_o much_o as_o may_v be_v because_o she_o be_v a_o joynt-governour_n with_o he_o over_o they_o now_o for_o she_o to_o be_v check_v and_o control_v before_o they_o will_v make_v they_o despise_v she_o herein_o therefore_o great_a wisdom_n be_v to_o be_v observe_v qu._n whether_o a_o husband_n may_v lawful_o strike_v or_o beat_v his_o wife_n ans._n though_o the_o husband_n have_v some_o authority_n over_o his_o wife_n yet_o it_o do_v not_o appear_v that_o he_o have_v any_o power_n or_o liberty_n thereupon_o to_o beat_v she_o 1_o for_o first_o we_o find_v it_o neither_o command_v nor_o commend_v to_o we_o in_o the_o scripture_n there_o be_v neither_o precept_n nor_o precedent_n for_o the_o same_o 2_o what_o fruit_n can_v be_v expect_v from_o a_o husband_n beat_v of_o his_o wife_n but_o a_o return_n of_o blow_n and_o scratch_n to_o the_o utmost_a of_o her_o strength_n for_o this_o be_v most_o certain_a that_o if_o a_o man_n who_o have_v no_o authority_n over_o another_o strike_v he_o he_o will_v turn_v against_o he_o and_o do_v he_o all_o the_o mischief_n that_o he_o can_v now_o therefore_o there_o be_v no_o ground_n to_o persuade_v wife_n that_o their_o husband_n have_v such_o authority_n over_o they_o as_o to_o strike_v they_o for_o their_o fault_n what_o hope_n be_v there_o that_o they_o will_v patient_o bear_v it_o and_o be_v better_v by_o it_o or_o rather_o be_v it_o not_o more_o likely_a that_o they_o will_v not_o only_o rise_v against_o they_o but_o if_o they_o can_v overmaster_v their_o husband_n and_o ever_o after_o cast_v off_o all_o subjection_n to_o they_o 3_o the_o near_a conjunction_n and_o communion_n that_o be_v between_o man_n and_o wife_n will_v not_o stand_v with_o such_o base_a and_o servile_a deal_n that_o the_o husband_n shall_v beat_v and_o strike_v his_o
