happen_v in_o the_o world_n and_o now_o what_o remain_v but_o that_o with_o all_o humility_n and_o cheerfulness_n we_o resign_v up_o ourselves_o into_o the_o hand_n of_o our_o most_o merciful_a father_n conclude_v as_o most_o certain_o we_o may_v that_o whatsoever_o he_o do_v with_o we_o or_o howsoever_o he_o dispose_v of_o we_o it_o will_v be_v all_o for_o our_o good_a in_o the_o late_a end_n if_o it_o be_v not_o through_o our_o own_o default_n for_o where_o can_v we_o be_v safe_a than_o in_o the_o hand_n of_o a_o omnipotent_a and_o omniscient_a goodness_n a_o goodness_n that_o know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o and_o will_n what_o it_o know_v to_o be_v so_o and_o do_v whatsoever_o it_o will_v sure_o in_o such_o hand_n our_o condition_n be_v a_o thousand_o time_n better_o and_o safe_a than_o if_o we_o have_v full_a power_n to_o effect_v our_o own_o wish_n and_o all_o the_o event_n that_o concern_v we_o be_v in_o our_o own_o disposal_n and_o if_o god_n shall_v shake_v we_o off_o from_o all_o dependence_n on_o he_o and_o resign_v up_o the_o whole_a conduct_n of_o our_o affair_n into_o our_o own_o hand_n if_o he_o shall_v say_v to_o we_o since_o you_o mislike_v of_o my_o conduct_n i_o will_v no_o more_o intermeddle_v with_o you_o or_o any_o thing_n that_o concern_v you_o take_v yourselves_o into_o your_o own_o disposal_n and_o manage_v all_o your_o concernment_n as_o you_o please_v if_o i_o say_v he_o shall_v do_v thus_o with_o we_o we_o shall_v be_v leave_v in_o a_o most_o forlorn_a and_o deplorable_a condition_n and_o unless_o we_o be_v whole_o abandon_v at_o his_o disposal_n and_o to_o take_v up_o that_o self-resigning_a prayer_n of_o our_o saviour_n father_n not_o our_o will_n but_o thy_o will_n be_v do_v for_o since_o god_n will_v our_o good_a as_o much_o or_o more_o than_o ourselves_o it_o must_v doubtless_o be_v our_o interest_n that_o his_o will_n shall_v take_v place_n whensoever_o it_o stand_v in_o competition_n with_o we_o because_o he_o do_v not_o only_o wish_v well_o to_o we_o as_o much_o as_o we_o do_v to_o ourselves_o but_o he_o know_v what_o be_v best_a for_o we_o a_o great_a deal_n better_o than_o we_o wherefore_o let_v we_o and_o do_v good_a john_n iii_o 16_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n the_o three_o first_o topic_n from_o whence_o i_o undertake_v to_o prove_v the_o goodness_n of_o god_n i_o have_v already_o handle_v on_o another_o text_n and_o show_v 1_o sy_n from_o his_o nature_n 2_o lie_n from_o his_o creation_n and_o 3_o dly_a from_o his_o providence_n that_o he_o be_v infinite_o good_a i_o proceed_v now_o to_o the_o 4_o the_o and_o last_o viz._n from_o principle_n of_o revelation_n the_o main_a of_o which_o be_v comprehend_v in_o the_o text_n god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n etc._n etc._n it_o be_v indeed_o a_o most_o glorious_a instance_n of_o the_o goodness_n of_o god_n that_o when_o he_o have_v imprint_v his_o law_n upon_o our_o nature_n in_o such_o legible_a character_n and_o give_v they_o such_o apparent_a sanction_n in_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n have_v make_v such_o a_o sensible_a distinction_n between_o moral_a good_a and_o evil_a by_o those_o natural_a good_a and_o evil_a consequent_n which_o he_o have_v inseparable_o entail_v on_o they_o and_o when_o mankind_n by_o their_o wilful_a wickedness_n and_o inadvertency_n have_v almost_o obliterated_a the_o law_n of_o their_o nature_n and_o extinguish_v their_o natural_a sense_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o immerse_v themselves_o in_o the_o most_o barbarous_a impiety_n and_o immorality_n notwithstanding_o all_o this_o that_o he_o have_v do_v for_o we_o and_o we_o against_o ourselves_o he_o shall_v still_o be_v so_o kind_a and_o compassionate_a as_o to_o put_v forth_o a_o new_a edition_n of_o his_o law_n and_o reveal_v his_o will_n anew_o to_o we_o in_o such_o a_o extraordinary_a manner_n that_o when_o he_o have_v implant_v a_o light_n in_o our_o nature_n that_o be_v sufficient_a to_o have_v direct_v we_o into_o the_o several_a path_n of_o our_o duty_n and_o we_o by_o our_o own_o neglect_n and_o abuse_v of_o it_o have_v almost_o extinguish_v this_o candle_n of_o the_o lord_n in_o we_o and_o consequent_o involve_v ourselves_o in_o midnight_n darkness_n and_o ignorance_n he_o shall_v then_o be_v so_o compassionate_a as_o to_o hang_v out_o a_o light_n from_o heaven_n to_o we_o to_o rectify_v our_o wander_n and_o guide_v our_o foot_n in_o the_o path_n we_o shall_v walk_v in_o be_v such_o a_o glorious_a expression_n of_o his_o goodness_n as_o for_o ever_o deserve_v our_o most_o thankful_a acknowledgement_n but_o then_o that_o he_o shall_v not_o only_o reveal_v to_o we_o what_o he_o have_v before_o imprint_v on_o our_o nature_n and_o we_o have_v most_o unworthy_o raze_v out_o and_o obliterated_a but_o also_o discover_v so_o much_o more_o to_o we_o than_o ever_o we_o do_v or_o can_v have_v know_v by_o the_o light_n of_o our_o nature_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o only_o repeat_v his_o former_a kindness_n to_o we_o which_o we_o have_v so_o shameful_o abuse_v but_o make_v such_o stupendous_a addition_n to_o it_o as_o he_o have_v do_v in_o the_o revelation_n of_o his_o gospel_n that_o manger_n all_o those_o impiety_n and_o provocation_n by_o which_o for_o so_o many_o age_n we_o have_v excite_v his_o patience_n he_o shall_v not_o only_o so_o love_v we_o as_o to_o restore_v to_o we_o the_o light_n which_o we_o have_v almost_o extinguish_v but_o to_o give_v his_o only_o beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v etc._n etc._n be_v such_o a_o amaze_a instance_n of_o goodness_n as_o can_v hardly_o be_v reflect_v on_o without_o a_o ecstasy_n of_o admiration_n in_o which_o word_n you_o have_v god_n reveal_v love_n and_o goodness_n to_o the_o world_n measure_v by_o a_o twofold_a standard_n 1._o by_o the_o greatness_n of_o the_o gift_n which_o he_o have_v bestow_v upon_o the_o world_n god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n 2._o the_o bless_a end_n for_o which_o he_o do_v bestow_v he_o that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o
that_o by_o the_o grace_n of_o god_n he_o taste_v death_n for_o every_o man._n so_o that_o the_o scripture_n have_v as_o emphatical_o declare_v the_o universal_a extent_n of_o this_o great_a gift_n of_o god_n love_n as_o it_o be_v possible_a for_o it_o to_o do_v in_o any_o human_a word_n and_o methinks_v it_o be_v strange_a that_o any_o man_n shall_v presume_v to_o restrain_v it_o when_o they_o have_v no_o other_o defence_n for_o so_o do_v but_o only_o a_o odd_a distinction_n that_o make_v the_o whole_a world_n to_o signify_v the_o small_a part_n of_o it_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n to_o import_v a_o few_o particular_a atom_n of_o it_o and_o every_o man_n to_o denote_v one_o man_n of_o ten_o thousand_o behold_v then_o the_o immense_a goodness_n of_o god_n that_o have_v not_o only_o give_v up_o his_o son_n for_o sinner_n but_o for_o a_o whole_a world_n of_o sinner_n and_o exclude_v none_o but_o those_o who_o exclude_v themselves_o from_o the_o benefit_n of_o this_o mighty_a donation_n that_o have_v plant_v this_o heavenly_a tree_n of_o life_n in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o sick_a and_o sinful_a world_n and_o have_v not_o confine_v or_o enclose_v it_o for_o the_o use_v of_o a_o few_o select_a patient_n but_o lay_v it_o open_a for_o all_o comer_n that_o whosoever_o will_v may_v take_v of_o its_o fruit_n and_o eat_v and_o live_v for_o ever_o o_o good_a god_n how_o vast_a be_v thy_o love_n that_o have_v thus_o impartial_o diffuse_v itself_o over_o such_o a_o wide_a world_n of_o sinner_n that_o in_o this_o stupendous_a gift_n of_o thy_o son_n have_v so_o kind_a a_o respect_n to_o every_o individual_a and_o make_v no_o exception_n of_o any_o how_o sinful_a and_o unworthy_a soever_o that_o will_v but_o comply_v with_o the_o merciful_a term_n and_o condition_n of_o sinner_n for_o whatsoever_o he_o be_v upon_o god_n give_v he_o up_o he_o be_v what_o god_n give_v he_o up_o to_o be_v and_o therefore_o since_o upon_o god_n give_v he_o up_o he_o become_v a_o man_n it_o necessary_o follow_v that_o he_o give_v he_o up_o to_o become_v so_o and_o indeed_o since_o god_n have_v such_o a_o merciful_a design_n as_o to_o send_v his_o son_n into_o the_o world_n to_o reform_v and_o save_v it_o it_o be_v high_o convenient_a for_o we_o though_o not_o for_o he_o that_o he_o shall_v come_v to_o we_o in_o our_o own_o nature_n not_o only_o that_o he_o may_v consecrate_v human_a nature_n that_o have_v be_v so_o miserable_o desecrate_v and_o profane_v but_o also_o that_o he_o may_v endear_v himself_o to_o we_o by_o the_o great_a honour_n he_o do_v we_o in_o assume_v our_o nature_n and_o that_o have_v our_o passion_n and_o be_v in_o our_o circumstance_n he_o may_v by_o his_o own_o practice_n give_v we_o a_o example_n how_o to_o govern_v the_o one_o and_o how_o to_o behave_v ourselves_o in_o the_o other_o have_v he_o come_v down_o from_o the_o heaven_n inrobe_v with_o splendour_n and_o light_n and_o preach_v his_o gospel_n to_o we_o in_o the_o midst_n of_o a_o choir_n of_o angel_n from_o some_o bright_a throne_n in_o the_o cloud_n this_o indeed_o will_v have_v be_v more_o convenient_a for_o he_o as_o be_v more_o suitable_a to_o the_o natural_a dignity_n and_o majesty_n of_o his_o person_n but_o the_o all-merciful_a father_n in_o the_o disposal_n of_o his_o son_n consult_v not_o so_o much_o his_o convenience_n as_o we_o he_o know_v well_o enough_o that_o shall_v he_o have_v send_v his_o son_n to_o we_o in_o such_o a_o illustrious_a equipage_n his_o appearance_n among_o we_o will_v have_v be_v more_o apt_a to_o astonish_v than_o to_o instruct_v we_o and_o to_o have_v fix_v our_o thought_n in_o a_o profound_a admiration_n of_o his_o glory_n than_o to_o have_v direct_v our_o step_n in_o the_o path_n of_o virtue_n and_o true_a happiness_n and_o that_o it_o will_v be_v much_o more_o for_o our_o interest_n that_o he_o shall_v conduct_v we_o by_o his_o example_n than_o amaze_v we_o by_o his_o appearance_n and_o therefore_o that_o he_o may_v do_v so_o he_o send_v he_o to_o we_o in_o our_o own_o nature_n that_o so_o go_v before_o we_o as_o a_o man_n he_o may_v show_v we_o by_o his_o example_n what_o become_v man_n to_o do_v and_o direct_v we_o by_o the_o print_n of_o his_o own_o footstep_n since_o therefore_o he_o assume_v our_o nature_n pure_o for_o our_o sake_n what_o a_o stupendous_a instance_n of_o god_n goodness_n be_v this_o that_o for_o the_o sake_n of_o a_o world_n of_o miserable_a sinner_n he_o shall_v be_v content_a that_o his_o own_o most_o dear_a and_o most_o glorious_a son_n shall_v condescend_v to_o become_v a_o man_n and_o to_o empty_v himself_o into_o our_o nature_n that_o he_o who_o by_o the_o divinity_n of_o his_o nature_n be_v exalt_v more_o above_o that_o of_o the_o high_a angel_n than_o that_o be_v above_o the_o low_a animal_n shall_v personal_o unite_v himself_o to_o a_o handful_n of_o dust_n and_o marry_v his_o divinity_n to_o the_o infirmity_n of_o our_o nature_n that_o he_o who_o throne_n be_v in_o the_o heaven_n and_o before_o who_o sacred_a foot_n the_o whole_a choir_n of_o heavenly_a angel_n lie_v prostrate_a shall_v abase_v himself_o so_o low_o as_o to_o come_v down_o among_o mortal_n and_o associate_v himself_o with_o companion_n so_o unworthy_a of_o he_o o_o good_a god_n when_o thou_o have_v condescend_v so_o low_a what_o be_v there_o thou_o will_v not_o condescend_v to_o to_o do_v good_a to_o thy_o creature_n but_o this_o be_v not_o all_o you_o shall_v see_v he_o stoop_v low_a yet_o for_o 5_o thly_a the_o greatness_n of_o god_n love_n and_o goodness_n towards_o we_o appear_v also_o in_o this_o that_o he_o give_v up_o his_o only_a beget_v son_n to_o become_v a_o miserable_a man_n for_o sinner_n it_o will_v have_v be_v some_o abatement_n to_o his_o mighty_a condescension_n if_o when_o he_o send_v he_o down_o among_o we_o in_o our_o nature_n he_o have_v make_v he_o supreme_a visible_a monarch_n of_o the_o world_n if_o he_o have_v crown_v he_o with_o all_o the_o splendour_n of_o a_o earthly_a condition_n if_o he_o have_v usher_v he_o into_o the_o world_n in_o a_o triumphal_a chariot_n with_o all_o the_o king_n of_o the_o earth_n either_o prostrate_a before_o he_o or_o chain_v at_o his_o chariot-wheel_n this_o though_o a_o vast_a condescension_n in_o the_o eternal_a son_n yet_o will_v not_o have_v be_v so_o low_o as_o it_o be_v to_o be_v bear_v of_o a_o poor_a mother_n to_o be_v educate_v as_o a_o carpenter_n son_n to_o be_v expose_v to_o want_v and_o penury_n to_o the_o contempt_n of_o every_o sordid_a wretch_n and_o the_o perpetual_a persecution_n of_o a_o boorish_a and_o ill-natured_a rabble_n and_o yet_o this_o be_v the_o wretched_a state_n to_o which_o god_n humble_v his_o own_o dear_a son_n for_o our_o sake_n for_o the_o design_n of_o his_o humiliation_n be_v to_o raise_v we_o the_o most_o merciful_a father_n consult_v not_o so_o much_o what_o be_v for_o his_o ease_n as_o what_o be_v for_o our_o benefit_n for_o he_o know_v well_o enough_o that_o shall_v he_o have_v introduce_v he_o into_o the_o world_n in_o earthly_a pomp_n and_o magnificence_n it_o will_v not_o have_v be_v so_o well_o for_o we_o that_o we_o be_v too_o ambitious_a already_o of_o the_o vanity_n of_o this_o world_n and_o that_o that_o have_v be_v the_o great_a snare_n that_o have_v entangle_v and_o ruin_v we_o and_o that_o therefore_o it_o be_v necessary_a when_o his_o son_n come_v among_o we_o he_o shall_v take_v we_o off_o from_o our_o over-eager_a pursuit_n of_o they_o disgrace_n and_o expose_v they_o to_o we_o by_o his_o own_o voluntary_a refusal_n of_o they_o that_o by_o see_v he_o trample_v on_o they_o when_o they_o lie_v all_o at_o his_o foot_n we_o may_v learn_v to_o despise_v they_o and_o be_v at_o length_n convince_v what_o foolish_a bargain_n we_o make_v when_o we_o sell_v our_o innocence_n and_o our_o happiness_n for_o such_o insignificant_a trifle_n he_o think_v it_o much_o more_o necessary_a for_o we_o that_o his_o son_n shall_v exercise_v his_o virtue_n than_o display_v his_o greatness_n among_o we_o and_o therefore_o he_o place_v he_o in_o such_o circumstance_n of_o human_a life_n wherein_o by_o his_o own_o example_n he_o may_v copy_v out_o to_o we_o the_o noble_a pattern_n of_o holy_a live_n for_o of_o all_o state_n that_o of_o affliction_n afford_v the_o large_a sphere_n to_o exercise_v human_a virtue_n in_o and_o therefore_o in_o this_o state_n out_o of_o his_o good_a will_n to_o we_o he_o place_v his_o own_o son_n that_o herein_o he_o may_v set_v we_o a_o patten_n of_o
more_o son_n to_o bestow_v upon_o we_o he_o be_v the_o only_o beget_v of_o his_o father_n heaven_n and_o earth_n be_v not_o able_a to_o furnish_v he_o with_o such_o another_o gift_n to_o bestow_v upon_o we_o and_o if_o he_o shall_v lay_v a_o tax_n upon_o all_o his_o creation_n to_o raise_v one_o great_a contribution_n to_o the_o happiness_n of_o mankind_n and_o exact_v the_o utmost_a of_o every_o creature_n that_o it_o be_v able_a to_o contribute_v it_o will_v all_o fall_v infinite_o short_a of_o what_o he_o have_v do_v for_o we_o in_o this_o inestimable_a gift_n of_o his_o own_o son_n so_o that_o if_o this_o prove_v ineffectual_a it_o be_v beyond_o the_o power_n of_o a_o omnipotent_a bounty_n to_o relieve_v we_o for_o though_o god_n can_v do_v all_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v well_o and_o wise_o do_v and_o do_v not_o imply_v a_o contradiction_n yet_o this_o can_v be_v no_o relief_n at_o all_o to_o we_o who_o reject_v his_o son_n and_o refuse_v to_o be_v make_v happy_a in_o the_o gracious_a method_n which_o he_o have_v prescribe_v to_o we_o for_o after_o this_o mighty_a gift_n of_o his_o own_o son_n to_o save_v we_o according_a to_o the_o method_n of_o his_o gospel_n there_o remain_v nothing_o more_o to_o be_v do_v for_o we_o but_o either_o to_o save_v we_o whether_o we_o will_v or_o no_o or_o else_o to_o make_v we_o happy_a in_o our_o sin_n and_o save_v we_o notwithstanding_o our_o continuance_n in_o they_o the_o former_a of_o which_o can_v neither_o be_v well_o nor_o wise_o do_v because_o by_o save_v we_o against_o our_o will_n he_o must_v deal_v with_o we_o in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o be_v repugnant_a to_o that_o law_n of_o liberty_n that_o be_v implant_v in_o our_o nature_n and_o use_v we_o not_o as_o free_a but_o as_o necessary_a agent_n and_o if_o consider_v all_o thing_n it_o be_v best_o and_o wise_a that_o he_o shall_v make_v we_o free_a agent_n than_o it_o can_v neither_o be_v well_o nor_o wise_a to_o govern_v we_o as_o necessary_a one_o their_o sin_n be_v to_o make_v they_o happy_a in_o their_o misery_n misery_n be_v as_o inseparable_a from_o sin_n as_o heat_n be_v from_o fire_n and_o as_o intimate_o relate_v to_o it_o as_o the_o son_n be_v to_o the_o father_n and_o consequent_o he_o may_v as_o possible_o make_v a_o father_n without_o a_o son_n as_o a_o sinner_n without_o misery_n when_o therefore_o god_n have_v do_v all_o for_o we_o that_o can_v possible_o be_v do_v and_o we_o by_o our_o own_o obstinacy_n have_v render_v all_o ineffectual_a we_o be_v beyond_o the_o power_n of_o remedy_n and_o must_v necessary_o perish_v in_o our_o sin_n and_o when_o we_o have_v no_o other_o hope_n to_o depend_v on_o but_o this_o that_o the_o alwise_a god_n will_v undo_v his_o own_o workmanship_n and_o unravel_v our_o nature_n by_o govern_v we_o contrary_a to_o the_o most_o wise_a constitution_n of_o it_o or_o that_o the_o all-powerful_a god_n will_v effect_v impossibility_n and_o do_v that_o for_o we_o which_o be_v not_o a_o object_n of_o power_n how_o deplorable_a and_o desperate_a must_v our_o condition_n be_v wherefore_o as_o you_o will_v not_o run_v yourselves_o beyond_o the_o reach_n of_o all_o mercy_n and_o excommunicate_v your_o own_o soul_n from_o all_o hope_n of_o salvation_n be_v now_o at_o last_o persuade_v to_o comply_v with_o christ_n come_v which_o be_v to_o reduce_v you_o from_o the_o
