our_o holy_a religion_n the_o most_o mysterious_a and_o profitable_a doctrine_n of_o it_o both_o for_o belief_n and_o practice_n he_o that_o seek_v not_o for_o the_o cross_n when_o he_o become_v a_o the_o cross_n in_o token_n he_o shall_v not_o be_v ashamed_a of_o christ_n crucify_v and_o god_n forbid_v we_o shall_v glory_v in_o any_o thing_n save_v in_o the_o cross_n of_o our_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n who_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o wisdom_n righteousness_n sanctification_n and_o redemption_n 3._o as_o he_o have_v redeem_v we_o by_o the_o cross_n so_o none_o can_v receive_v the_o benefit_n stone_n for_o what_o will_v rapture_n and_o high-flown_a thought_n signify_v what_o will_v avail_v communion_n and_o familiar_a acquaintance_n with_o god_n and_o what_o the_o precise_a virtue_n if_o in_o all_o these_o we_o seek_v ourselves_o aim_v at_o our_o own_o glory_n and_o puff_v up_o with_o pharisaical_a pride_n do_v despise_v other_o he_o be_v wise_a than_o all_o the_o philosopher_n who_o in_o his_o heart_n own_v himself_o simple_a and_o ignorant_a he_o be_v high_a than_o the_o great_a monarch_n who_o repute_v himself_o the_o mean_a of_o man_n our_o virtue_n perfection_n and_o safety_n consist_v not_o in_o lofty_a expression_n nor_o yet_o in_o thing_n wonderful_a and_o extraordinary_a but_o in_o the_o cross_n in_o bear_v reproach_n in_o self-abjection_n and_o no_o man_n can_v without_o true_a mortification_n in_o what_o they_o suffer_v they_o have_v some_o other_o design_n than_o to_o glorify_v god_n and_o to_o submit_v to_o his_o bless_a will_n 2._o who_o will_v think_v that_o self-love_n shall_v be_v find_v in_o the_o cross_n which_o it_o abhor_v so_o much_o yet_o so_o it_o be_v not_o a_o few_o there_o be_v who_o willing_o or_o otherways_o can_v endure_v much_o must_v be_v love_v and_o worship_v in_o spirit_n and_o in_o truth_n in_o singleness_n and_o simplicity_n without_o any_o respect_n to_o ourselves_o 2._o as_o a_o countryman_n plain_a and_o unlearned_a who_o daily_o see_v the_o sun_n be_v more_o in_o love_n with_o the_o light_n of_o it_o than_o a_o blind_a philosopher_n who_o can_v talk_v many_o thing_n concern_v the_o nature_n and_o the_o cause_n and_o effect_n of_o light_n so_o a_o honest_a pious_a man_n without_o scholarship_n by_o a_o active_a practical_a faith_n show_v more_o love_n to_o god_n than_o the_o profound_a divine_a by_o his_o subtlety_n and_o high_a speculation_n and_o as_o a_o learned_a man_n in_o northern_a country_n where_o no_o vine_n can_v grow_v may_v learned_o discourse_v of_o their_o fruit_n and_o the_o property_n of_o it_o and_o yet_o not_o have_v such_o a_o intimate_a acquaintance_n with_o the_o nature_n and_o strength_n of_o the_o wine_n as_o the_o plain_a vine-dresser_n that_o drink_v it_o daily_o so_o may_v a_o religious_a illiterate_a man_n have_v a_o great_a insight_n into_o divine_a mystery_n and_o a_o more_o relish_v apprehension_n of_o they_o than_o many_o a_o man_n of_o great_a fame_n and_o learning_n for_o experience_n go_v beyond_o all_o theory_n and_o love_n pass_v knowledge_n and_o we_o much_o soon_o come_v to_o god_n by_o affection_n than_o by_o studious_a inquiry_n 3._o we_o must_v
