discern_v the_o meat_n and_o the_o taste_n approve_v it_o that_o be_v call_v the_o first_o apprehension_n now_o upon_o this_o which_o be_v the_o first_o the_o second_o apprehension_n follow_v that_o be_v after_o that_o you_o have_v chew_v that_o meat_n swallow_v it_o and_o send_v it_o to_o your_o stomach_n where_o it_o digest_v and_o convert_v into_o your_o nouriture_n then_o in_o your_o stomach_n you_o get_v the_o second_o apprehension_n but_o if_o your_o eye_n like_v not_o that_o meat_n neither_o your_o taste_n like_o it_o the_o second_o apprehension_n follow_v not_o for_o thou_o will_v spit_v it_o out_o again_o or_o reject_v it_o prefer_v some_o other_o meat_n unto_o it_o that_o thou_o like_v better_a that_o meat_n which_o thou_o like_v not_o enters_z never_o into_o thy_o stomach_n and_o so_o it_o can_v never_o be_v convert_v into_o thy_o nourishment_n for_o it_o be_v only_o the_o second_o apprehension_n of_o the_o meat_n that_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n in_o our_o corporal_a food_n so_o that_o if_o you_o chew_v not_o this_o meat_n and_o swallow_v it_o it_o feed_v you_o not_o than_o it_o be_v only_o the_o second_o apprehension_n that_o nourish_v our_o body_n it_o be_v even_o so_o in_o spiritual_a thing_n so_o far_o as_o they_o may_v be_v compare_v in_o the_o food_n of_o christ_n jesus_n who_o be_v the_o life_n and_o nouriture_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o conscience_n there_o must_v be_v two_o sort_n of_o apprehension_n of_o christ_n jesus_n the_o first_o apprehension_n be_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o be_v by_o our_o knowledge_n and_o understanding_n for_o as_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o body_n discern_v by_o a_o outward_a light_n so_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n discern_v by_o a_o inward_a and_o renew_a understanding_n whereby_o we_o get_v the_o first_o apprehension_n of_o christ._n now_o if_o this_o first_o apprehension_n of_o christ_n like_o we_o well_o than_o the_o next_o follow_v we_o begin_v to_o cast_v the_o affection_n of_o our_o heart_n on_o he_o we_o have_v good_a will_n to_o he_o for_o all_o our_o affection_n proceed_v from_o our_o will_n and_o our_o affection_n be_v renew_v and_o make_v holy_a we_o set_v they_o whole_o upon_o christ._n we_o love_v he_o and_o if_o we_o love_v he_o we_o take_v hold_v of_o he_o and_o digest_v he_o that_o be_v we_o apply_v he_o to_o our_o soul_n and_o so_o of_o this_o love_n &_o like_n of_o he_o the_o second_o apprehension_n do_v follow_v but_o if_o we_o have_v no_o will_n to_o he_o if_o we_o have_v no_o love_n nor_o like_n of_o he_o what_o do_v we_o then_o we_o reject_v he_o and_o prefer_v our_o own_o idol_n and_o the_o service_n of_o our_o own_o affection_n to_o he_o and_o so_o the_o second_o apprehension_n follow_v not_o we_o can_v digest_v he_o and_o if_o we_o digest_v he_o not_o that_o spiritual_a life_n can_v grow_v in_o we_o for_o mark_n in_o what_o place_n the_o eye_n serve_v to_o the_o body_n in_o the_o same_o room_n serve_v knowledge_n and_o understanding_n to_o thy_o soul_n and_o look_v in_o what_o place_n thy_o hand_n and_o thy_o mouth_n thy_o taste_n and_o thy_o stomach_n serve_v unto_o thy_o body_n in_o that_o very_a place_n serve_v the_o heart_n and_o affection_n unto_o thy_o soul_n so_o that_o as_o our_o body_n can_v be_v nourish_v except_o our_o hand_n take_v and_o our_o mouth_n eat_v the_o meat_n whereby_o the_o second_o apprehension_n may_v follow_v likewise_o our_o soul_n can_v feed_v on_o christ_n except_o we_o hold_v he_o and_o embrace_v he_o hearty_o by_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n for_o we_o come_v not_o to_o christ_n by_o any_o outward_a motion_n of_o our_o body_n but_o by_o a_o inward_a motion_n &_o apprehension_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o god_n find_v we_o all_o in_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n he_o bring_v we_o to_o christ_n by_o reform_v the_o affection_n of_o our_o soul_n by_o make_v we_o to_o love_v he_o and_o therefore_o the_o second_o apprehension_n whereby_o we_o digest_v our_o saviour_n will_v never_o enter_v into_o our_o soul_n except_o as_o he_o please_v the_o eye_n so_o he_o please_v the_o will_n and_o the_o affection_n also_o now_o if_o this_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n be_v whole_o bend_v upon_o christ_n than_o no_o doubt_n we_o have_v get_v this_o jewel_n of_o faith_n have_v you_o such_o a_o like_n in_o your_o mind_n &_o such_o a_o love_n in_o your_o heart_n of_o christ_n that_o you_o will_v prefer_v he_o before_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n then_o no_o question_n faith_n be_v begin_v in_o you_o us._n now_o after_o a_o thing_n be_v begin_v there_o be_v yet_o more_o require_v for_o though_o this_o faith_n be_v form_v in_o your_o mind_n in_o your_o heart_n and_o soul_n yet_o that_o be_v strength_n present_o as_o to_o resist_v the_o affection_n &_o abstain_v from_o do_v evil_a deed_n yet_o perpetual_o in_o the_o heart_n they_o be_v find_v fault_n with_o thy_o corruption_n and_o suffer_v thou_o not_o to_o take_v thy_o pleasure_n without_o pain_n but_o last_o of_o all_o force_n thou_o to_o utter_v these_o speech_n if_o i_o have_v strength_n to_o resist_v i_o will_v not_o do_v the_o evil_n which_o i_o do_v where_o these_o speech_n be_v no_o question_n they_o be_v the_o word_n of_o a_o soul_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v begin_v to_o sanctify_v and_o be_v once_o sanctify_v in_o despite_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o of_o the_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o we_o this_o faith_n shall_v never_o perish_v but_o if_o the_o whole_a soul_n without_o contradiction_n with_o a_o greedy_a appetite_n and_o pleasure_n be_v carry_v to_o evil_a and_o have_v no_o sorrow_n for_o it_o that_o soul_n be_v in_o a_o ill_a estate_n i_o can_v look_v for_o nothing_o in_o such_o a_o soul_n but_o death_n except_o the_o lord_n of_o his_o great_a mercy_n prevent_v it_o but_o where_o this_o remorse_n and_o sorrow_n and_o such_o speech_n be_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o soul_n in_o the_o time_n so_o it_o be_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n and_o grace_n be_v perform_v and_o make_v effectual_a not_o in_o bread_n and_o wine_n but_o in_o faithful_a man_n and_o woman_n therefore_o these_o promise_n shall_v be_v direct_v to_o faithful_a man_n and_o woman_n now_o here_o be_v the_o promise_n of_o mercy_n and_o grace_n this_o be_v my_o body_n which_o be_v break_v for_o you_o and_o this_o bread_n or_o any_o dumb_a element_n there_o be_v no_o man_n will_v enter_v into_o covenant_n with_o his_o servant_n much_o less_o will_v enter_v inter_fw-la covenant_n with_o a_o dumb_a element_n so_o in_o respect_n this_o sacrament_n seal_v up_o a_o covenant_n this_o covenant_n of_o necessity_n must_v be_v make_v with_o a_o faithful_a soul_n and_o in_o no_o wise_a with_o the_o dumb_a element_n faith_n faith_n be_v the_o only_a thing_n that_o translate_v our_o soul_n out_o of_o that_o death_n and_o damnation_n wherein_o we_o be_v conceive_v and_o bear_v and_o plant_v life_n in_o us._n so_o the_o whole_a study_n and_o endeavour_n of_o a_o christian_a shall_v tend_v to_o this_o to_o crave_v that_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o mercy_n will_v illuminate_v his_o mind_n with_o the_o eye_n of_o faith_n and_o that_o he_o will_v kindle_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o love_n of_o faith_n and_o work_v in_o his_o heart_n a_o thirst_n and_o desire_v of_o the_o object_n of_o faith_n and_o more_o and_o more_o to_o thirst_n and_o hunger_n for_o the_o food_n of_o faith_n that_o nourish_v we_o to_o life_n eternal_a without_o this_o faith_n how-soev_a the_o natural_a man_n understand_v natural_o will_v flatter_v himself_o sure_o there_o
many_o evil_a man_n that_o have_v seek_v death_n and_o it_o be_v as_o true_a that_o there_o have_v be_v many_o good_a man_n that_o have_v seek_v death_n yet_o never_o one_o of_o these_o seek_a death_n for_o itself_o for_o it_o be_v not_o natural_a to_o seek_v the_o dissolution_n of_o ourselves_o but_o these_o evil_a man_n that_o seek_v death_n and_o put_v hand_n on_o themselves_o in_o their_o appearance_n they_o seek_v it_o for_o a_o better_a to_o wit_n to_o eschew_v the_o present_a torment_n and_o vexation_n of_o hell_n in_o their_o conscience_n wherein_o they_o be_v think_v that_o their_o miserable_a soul_n be_v out_o of_o the_o body_n shall_v be_v at_o great_a liberty_n then_o if_o it_o be_v detain_v in_o this_o prison_n but_o they_o be_v all_o deceive_v for_o suppose_v hell_n be_v begin_v here_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o in_o a_o full_a measure_n until_o this_o life_n be_v do_v and_o so_o the_o miserable_a caitiff_n deceive_v himself_o on_o the_o other_o side_n there_o have_v be_v good_a man_n that_o have_v seek_v death_n but_o not_o for_o itself_o but_o for_o a_o better_a if_o they_o know_v not_o &_o feel_v not_o that_o there_o be_v a_o better_a life_n to_o follow_v pain_n and_o terror_n it_o be_v true_a that_o this_o fear_n be_v temper_v by_o faith_n that_o dwell_v in_o the_o soul_n and_o the_o hope_n of_o joy_n that_o dwell_v in_o the_o faithful_a soul_n hold_v this_o fear_n in_o awe_n that_o hope_v of_o heavenly_a joy_n so_o swallow_v up_o and_o devour_v the_o fear_n and_o make_v it_o to_o appear_v to_o the_o looker_n on_o that_o the_o soul_n have_v no_o conscience_n call_v a_o man_n inward_o this_o god_n make_v his_o church_n by_o their_o testimony_n to_o ratify_v his_o call_n outward_o as_o you_o see_v he_o command_v the_o church_n to_o separate_v paul_n &_o barnabas_n to_o the_o work_n whereunto_o he_o have_v call_v they_o inward_o so_o obtain_v we_o his_o approbation_n &_o we_o shall_v have_v all_o the_o three_o therefore_o let_v we_o look_v to_o none_o but_o he_o we_o look_v to_o his_o approbation_n when_o we_o look_v to_o ourselves_o then_o honour_v he_o we_o when_o we_o honour_v he_o when_o we_o seek_v nothing_o but_o he_o then_o get_v access_n to_o his_o countenance_n and_o stand_v before_o he_o now_o there_o be_v no_o stand_v before_o god_n but_o in_o purity_n and_o by_o purity_n of_o the_o heart_n it_o be_v the_o pure_a heart_n only_o that_o look_v upon_o god_n and_o stand_v before_o he_o for_o bless_a be_v the_o pure_a in_o heart_n say_v our_o master_n math._n 5._o for_o they_o shall_v see_v god_n the_o heart_n which_o he_o give_v to_o the_o conscience_n so_o that_o the_o conscience_n which_o be_v terrify_v exceed_o gnaw_v and_o distract_v before_o by_o the_o approach_n of_o this_o peace_n and_o of_o mercy_n in_o the_o heart_n and_o conscience_n and_o except_o the_o heart_n feel_v it_o and_o taste_v it_o in_o some_o measure_n no_o conscience_n dare_v apply_v god_n and_o his_o mercy_n to_o itself_o this_o denunciation_n will_v appear_v hard_a and_o extreme_a to_o they_o that_o live_v according_a to_o the_o flesh_n for_o o_o how_o bitter_a be_v death_n say_v solomon_n to_o they_o that_o live_v according_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o i_o pray_v you_o what_o be_v the_o cause_n that_o death_n be_v so_o bitter_a unto_o they_o because_o in_o the_o agony_n of_o death_n they_o feel_v another_o uncertain_a to_o dwell_v in_o then_o be_v a_o tent_n for_o why_o it_o lack_v a_o ground_n it_o lack_v a_o foundation_n and_o stability_n and_o in_o stead_n of_o a_o ground_n it_o lean_v only_o to_o body_n by_o it_o so_o he_o have_v by_o it_o the_o life_n whereby_o he_o live_v in_o the_o soul_n for_o as_o there_o be_v a_o life_n and_o death_n of_o the_o body_n so_o there_o be_v a_o life_n and_o death_n of_o the_o soul_n the_o life_n of_o the_o body_n may_v be_v conjoin_v well_o with_o the_o death_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o we_o may_v live_v in_o the_o body_n and_o be_v dead_a in_o the_o soul_n at_o one_o time_n also_o the_o death_n of_o the_o body_n may_v stand_v with_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n for_o we_o may_v depart_v from_o this_o life_n and_o go_v to_o a_o better_a the_o life_n of_o the_o body_n stand_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o soul_n but_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n stand_v in_o the_o presence_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n except_o our_o soul_n be_v bear_v anew_o again_o by_o the_o virtue_n of_o that_o spirit_n of_o life_n it_o be_v not_o possible_a that_o we_o can_v see_v god_n and_o taste_n of_o his_o joy_n for_o by_o nature_n we_o be_v not_o spiritual_a life_n must_v be_v whole_o put_v out_o if_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n be_v whole_o put_v out_o there_o remain_v not_o so_o much_o as_o a_o breath_n out_o of_o the_o which_o any_o good_a cogitation_n or_o action_n may_v proceed_v if_o so_o be_v there_o be_v not_o so_o much_o as_o one_o breath_n where_o be_v all_o that_o freewill_n of_o the_o papist_n where_o be_v that_o integrity_n which_o remain_v in_o the_o filthy_a nature_n then_o i_o say_v we_o natural_o remain_v in_o the_o death_n of_o body_n and_o soul_n still_o until_o that_o by_o the_o participation_n of_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n which_o dwell_v in_o the_o body_n of_o christ_n until_o i_o say_v that_o this_o spirit_n free_v we_o from_o sin_n and_o death_n and_o so_o until_o this_o time_n we_o shall_v never_o mount_v above_o the_o cloud_n nor_o see_v the_o face_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o as_o i_o exhort_v you_o the_o last_o day_n so_o i_o insist_v in_o the_o same_o exhortation_n now_o that_o every_o one_o of_o you_o mark_v and_o perceive_v yourselves_o whether_o you_o have_v such_o a_o life_n begin_v in_o you_o or_o not_o i_o give_v you_o three_o effect_n which_o will_v never_o deceive_v you_o the_o first_o be_v if_o you_o find_v yourselves_o refresh_v and_o recreate_v in_o your_o spirit_n from_o the_o terror_n of_o your_o conscience_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o sin_n which_o recreation_n and_o refreshment_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v call_v that_o peace_n that_o pass_v all_o understanding_n whereof_o the_o world_n be_v ignorant_a he_o that_o find_v any_o of_o this_o if_o it_o be_v never_o so_o little_a within_o he_o no_o question_n he_o have_v this_o life_n begin_v in_o he_o and_o the_o more_o this_o peace_n be_v augment_v the_o more_o the_o life_n grow_v but_o this_o peace_n grow_v by_o remove_v of_o sin_n therefore_o our_o whole_a study_n shall_v be_v to_o remove_v sin_n for_o the_o only_a thing_n that_o trouble_v the_o conscience_n be_v sin_n take_v away_o sin_n the_o conscience_n shall_v be_v at_o rest_n wherefore_o this_o be_v the_o chief_a effect_n i_o will_v you_o to_o take_v heed_n unto_o the_o second_o effect_n be_v joy_n and_o rejoice_v under_o trouble_n for_o we_o see_v trouble_v of_o the_o own_o nature_n bring_v not_o forth_o this_o effect_n but_o rather_o bring_v forth_o sorrow_n heaviness_n and_o lamentation_n then_o when_o our_o spirit_n be_v so_o dispose_v that_o under_o trouble_n we_o rejoice_v and_o glory_n in_o it_o this_o be_v the_o spirit_n of_o life_n this_o joy_n be_v not_o in_o all_o trouble_n it_o be_v not_o in_o the_o trouble_n which_o we_o procure_v but_o only_o in_o the_o trouble_n which_o we_o sustain_v for_o righteousness_n sake_n and_o which_o we_o sustain_v for_o christ_n his_o sake_n the_o three_o effect_n be_v if_o you_o have_v a_o love_n of_o god_n and_o good_a man_n and_o a_o hatred_n of_o evil_a where_o these_o effect_n be_v in_o any_o measure_n no_o doubt_n but_o the_o spirit_n of_o life_n be_v there_o as_o by_o the_o contrary_a where_o there_o be_v a_o love_n of_o wicked_a and_o evil_a man_n no_o question_n let_v they_o speak_v of_o christ_n as_o they_o will_v the_o spirit_n of_o the_o devil_n have_v full_a dominion_n this_o spirit_n of_o life_n we_o show_v be_v entertain_v by_o nourish_v of_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n when_o we_o edify_v ourselves_o in_o our_o most_o holy_a faith_n when_o we_o nourish_v the_o exercise_n of_o prayer_n as_o by_o the_o contrary_a the_o spirit_n be_v put_v out_o when_o by_o our_o evil_a do_n we_o put_v out_o the_o knowledge_n of_o god_n when_o we_o diminish_v our_o persuasion_n of_o his_o mercy_n in_o christ_n &_o fall_v from_o the_o exercise_n of_o prayer_n then_o you_o that_o have_v this_o life_n begin_v nourish_v it_o by_o well_o do_v for_o by_o well_o do_v no_o question_n our_o faith_n be_v corroborate_v delight_n therefore_o in_o well_o do_v sow_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o not_o in_o the_o flesh_n run_v not_o with_o the_o thief_n nor_o consent_v not_o with_o the_o murderer_n for_o so_o you_o shall_v be_v participant_a of_o their_o punishment_n but_o sow_v in_o the_o spirit_n and_o of_o this_o you_o shall_v reap_v a_o everlasting_a and_o the_o word_n have_v i_o to_o do_v this_o what_o warrant_v have_v i_o of_o his_o mouth_n for_o thus_o do_v and_o find_v a_o warrant_n of_o god_n word_n and_o of_o his_o spirit_n go_v together_o thou_o be_v sure_a but_o where_o the_o conscience_n give_v a_o testimony_n without_o the_o warrant_n of_o the_o word_n it_o be_v a_o deceive_a testimony_n without_o the_o warrant_n of_o the_o word_n it_o be_v a_o deceive_a testimony_n therefore_o conjoin_v these_o two_o try_v narrow_o in_o your_o do_n if_o the_o word_n and_o the_o spirit_n go_v together_o and_o if_o these_o two_o be_v join_v they_o deal_v it_o come_v to_o pass_v that_o at_o last_o they_o lose_v their_o conscience_n so_o that_o it_o can_v neither_o accuse_v nor_o excuse_n because_o they_o be_v cast_v asleep_a &_o lie_v in_o this_o dead_a sleep_n till_o they_o be_v waken_v with_o a_o terrible_a waken_n by_o god_n the_o righteous_a judge_n from_o heaven_n take_v heed_n for_o this_o be_v the_o truth_n and_o at_o that_o waken_n he_o shall_v make_v the_o terror_n of_o these_o same_o sin_n which_o if_o they_o have_v follow_v counsel_n they_o may_v have_v eschew_v terrrible_o to_o overwhelm_v they_o now_o the_o in_o the_o second_o rank_n it_o send_v thou_o to_o seek_v remedy_n only_o of_o this_o beware_v that_o thou_o furnish_v not_o matter_n to_o her_o bite_n by_o increase_v of_o further_a corruption_n he_o have_v sit_v long_o and_o why_o have_v he_o sit_v but_o to_o see_v if_o his_o enemy_n will_v repent_v and_o have_v this_o take_a effect_n no_o for_o he_o have_v not_o great_a enemy_n in_o any_o
