far_o that_o affection_n which_o command_v thou_o may_v agree_v with_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v there_o such_o a_o harmony_n as_o that_o that_o thing_n which_o thy_o affection_n command_v thou_o may_v stand_v with_o god_n law_n and_o holy_a will_n then_o no_o question_n it_o be_v a_o sanctify_a affection_n thou_o may_v put_v it_o in_o execution_n but_o after_o this_o trial_n if_o thou_o find_v thy_o affection_n to_o be_v exorbitant_a &_o out_o of_o rule_n carry_v thou_o from_o god_n &_o against_o his_o law_n beware_v of_o it_o resist_v it_o put_v it_o not_o in_o execution_n for_o if_o thou_o fulfil_v the_o will_n of_o thy_o affection_n what_o pleasure_n can_v it_o bring_v with_o it_o it_o may_v well_o bring_v a_o flatter_a pleasure_n in_o the_o entry_n but_o it_o close_v ever_o with_o a_o bitter_a remorse_n in_o the_o end_n then_o to_o eschew_v this_o bitter_a remorse_n shall_v you_o not_o all_o try_v your_o affection_n you_o must_v examine_v and_o try_v they_o by_o that_o law_n let_v every_o man_n deny_v himself_o renounce_v his_o affection_n and_o so_o this_o trial_n be_v take_v in_o this_o manner_n by_o thyself_o it_o sanctifi_v thy_o affection_n make_v christ_n to_o lodge_v in_o thy_o soul_n make_v thy_o conscience_n to_o be_v at_o rest_n and_o the_o holy_a spirit_n this_o way_n make_v both_o body_n and_o soul_n to_o be_v in_o good_a health_n and_o to_o rejoice_v then_o fly_v from_o sin_n this_o be_v the_o second_o lesson_n the_o three_o lesson_n be_v this_o study_v to_o do_v well_o will_v thou_o keep_v health_n in_o thy_o soul_n study_v to_o oftentimes_o in_o the_o scripture_n under_o the_o name_n of_o faith_n for_o the_o mind_n have_v it_o own_o assent_n and_o persuasion_n in_o the_o own_o kind_n as_o well_o as_o the_o heart_n have_v and_o therefore_o the_o mind_n be_v illuminate_v &_o season_v with_o this_o light_n the_o assent_v and_o knowledge_n in_o the_o same_o mind_n be_v call_v faith_n the_o apostle_n and_o evangelist_n give_v to_o this_o knowledge_n the_o name_n of_o faith_n for_o from_o the_o time_n that_o thou_o once_o have_v a_o eye_n to_o see_v god_n &_o who_o he_o have_v send_v christ_n jesus_n when_o once_o thou_o get_v a_o sight_n of_o he_o and_o access_n to_o he_o if_o it_o be_v no_o more_o than_o in_o the_o mind_n it_o be_v call_v faith_n but_o we_o must_v not_o stand_v still_o here_o if_o faith_n go_v no_o further_o than_o the_o mind_n it_o be_v not_o the_o faith_n that_o we_o be_v seek_v for_o the_o faith_n that_o justifi_v and_o do_v we_o good_a must_v open_v the_o hart_n as_o well_o as_o it_o open_v the_o mind_n it_o must_v banish_v that_o idol_n and_o affection_n out_o of_o the_o hart_n and_o in_o steed_n thereof_o place_v a_o throne_n for_o christ_n jesus_n so_o that_o except_o the_o good_a spirit_n of_o god_n go_v further_o than_o the_o mind_n and_o banish_v this_o idol_n as_o well_o out_o of_o our_o heart_n as_o out_o of_o our_o mind_n we_o have_v not_o that_o justify_n faith_n whereby_o we_o may_v look_v for_o mercy_n yea_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n must_v not_o only_o stay_v at_o the_o enlighten_v of_o thy_o mind_n but_o it_o must_v mollify_v this_o hart_n of_o thou_o and_o change_v thy_o affection_n and_o whereas_o thy_o affection_n be_v wicked_a and_o evil_a god_n spirit_n must_v change_v thy_o will_n and_o he_o never_o can_v change_v thy_o will_n except_o he_o make_v the_o ground_n of_o thy_o hart_n good_a that_o it_o may_v be_v set_v on_o god_n and_o bring_v forth_o good_a fruit_n abundant_o to_o the_o owner_n and_o what_o teach_v this_o this_o and_o yet_o that_o same_o very_a thing_n i_o will_v do_v and_o no_o other_o so_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n link_v these_o two_o together_o in_o this_o work_n and_o as_o he_o reform_v the_o mind_n he_o reform_v also_o the_o hart_n and_o make_v you_o to_o be_v partaker_n of_o that_o good_a which_o you_o see_v and_o to_o eschew_v that_o evil_n which_o you_o perceive_v and_o this_o be_v the_o second_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n not_o only_o to_o present_v a_o thing_n to_o thou_o but_o to_o make_v it_o thou_o in_o effect_n for_o howbeit_o the_o mind_n will_v do_v his_o part_n never_o so_o well_o and_o let_v thou_o see_v that_o christ_n be_v thou_o and_o present_v he_o to_o thou_o never_o so_o often_o yet_o if_o thy_o hart_n be_v not_o reform_v that_o will_v and_o crooked_a affection_n that_o serve_v thou_o and_o the_o mind_n only_o shall_v serve_v he_o but_o thy_o service_n be_v then_o only_o acceptable_a to_o god_n when_o thou_o consecrate_v thy_o hart_n as_o well_o as_o thy_o mind_n be_v two_o sort_n of_o apprehension_n of_o the_o body_n and_o blood_n of_o christ_n jesus_n which_o be_v our_o meat_n and_o drink_v spiritual_a of_o meat_n and_o drink_v corporal_a there_o be_v a_o apprehension_n by_o the_o eye_n and_o by_o the_o taste_n that_o while_o the_o meat_n be_v present_a unto_o you_o on_o the_o table_n your_o eye_n take_v a_o view_n of_o that_o meat_n discern_v it_o and_o make_v choice_n of_o it_o and_o not_o only_o the_o eye_n but_o also_o the_o taste_n discern_v the_o meat_n and_o the_o taste_n approve_v it_o that_o be_v call_v the_o first_o apprehension_n now_o upon_o this_o which_o be_v the_o first_o the_o second_o apprehension_n follow_v that_o be_v after_o that_o you_o have_v chew_v that_o meat_n swallow_v it_o &_o send_v it_o to_o your_o stomach_n where_o it_o dige_v and_o convert_v into_o your_o nouriture_n then_o in_o your_o stomach_n you_o get_v the_o second_o apprehension_n but_o if_o your_o eye_n like_v not_o that_o meat_n neither_o your_o taste_n like_o it_o the_o second_o apprehension_n follow_v not_o for_o thou_o will_v spit_v it_o out_o again_o or_o reject_v it_o prefer_v some_o other_o meat_n unto_o it_o that_o thou_o like_v better_a that_o meat_n which_o thou_o like_v not_o enters_z never_o into_o thy_o stomach_n and_o so_o it_o can_v never_o be_v convert_v into_o thy_o nourishment_n for_o it_o be_v only_o the_o second_o apprehension_n of_o the_o meat_n that_o be_v the_o cause_n of_o the_o nourishment_n of_o the_o body_n in_o our_o corporal_a food_n so_o that_o if_o you_o chew_v not_o this_o meat_n and_o swallow_v it_o it_o feed_v you_o not_o than_o it_o be_v only_o the_o second_o apprehension_n that_o nourish_v our_o body_n it_o be_v even_o so_o in_o spiritual_a thing_n so_o far_o as_o they_o may_v be_v compare_v in_o the_o food_n of_o christ_n jesus_n who_o be_v the_o life_n and_o nouriture_n of_o our_o soul_n and_o conscience_n there_o must_v be_v two_o sort_n of_o apprehension_n of_o christ_n jesus_n the_o first_o apprehension_n be_v by_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o mind_n that_o be_v by_o our_o knowledge_n &_o understanding_n for_o as_o the_o eye_n of_o the_o body_n discern_v by_o a_o conscience_n as_o i_o myself_o therefore_o chief_o it_o behoove_v every_o man_n and_o woman_n before_o they_o enter_v to_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n before_o they_o give_v their_o ear_n to_o the_o word_n or_o their_o mouth_n to_o the_o sacrament_n it_o behove_v they_o to_o try_v and_o examine_v their_o own_o conscience_n not_o that_o the_o apostle_n will_v seclude_v the_o trial_n of_o other_o man_n for_o as_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o i_o to_o try_v myself_o so_o no_o doubt_n it_o be_v lawful_a for_o my_o pastor_n to_o try_v i_o it_o be_v lawful_a for_o other_o man_n that_o have_v a_o care_n over_o i_o to_o try_v and_o examine_v i_o but_o no_o man_n can_v do_v this_o so_o profitable_o to_o i_o as_o i_o myself_o and_o though_o we_o have_v never_o so_o many_o tryer_n and_o examiner_n all_o be_v nothing_o if_o we_o try_v not_o ourselves_o so_o whether_o there_o be_v a_o second_o or_o a_o three_o tryer_n and_o examiner_n let_v ourselves_o be_v one_o and_o the_o first_o and_o no_o doubt_n the_o apostle_n mind_n be_v this_o to_o let_v we_o see_v clear_o that_o he_o that_o come_v to_o that_o table_n and_o have_v not_o that_o knowledge_n â—or_a be_v not_o of_o that_o ability_n to_o try_v himself_o be_v a_o profane_a comer_n come_v unclean_o and_o therefore_o must_v needs_o come_v to_o his_o own_o destruction_n let_v every_o man_n therefore_o grow_v in_o knowledge_n grow_v in_o understanding_n grow_v in_o the_o spirit_n that_o he_o may_v be_v the_o more_o able_a to_o try_v and_o examine_v his_o own_o conscience_n to_o the_o end_n that_o you_o may_v go_v forward_o &_o proceed_v in_o the_o work_n of_o this_o trial_n with_o the_o better_a speed_n and_o with_o the_o better_a fruit_n in_o this_o examination_n we_o lay_v down_o this_o order_n first_o of_o all_o i_o show_v what_o that_o be_v which_o we_o call_v a_o conscience_n and_o what_o be_v mean_v thereby_o next_o i_o declare_v for_o what_o cause_v you_o shall_v put_v your_o conscience_n to_o this_o trial_n and_o narrow_a examination_n and_o thirdlie_o so_o far_o as_o time_n suffer_v i_o enter_v into_o the_o point_n wherein_o every_o one_o of_o you_o shall_v try_v and_o examine_v your_o own_o conscience_n as_o for_o conscience_n that_o you_o may_v call_v that_o definition_n to_o your_o memory_n i_o will_v resume_v it_o short_o we_o call_v a_o conscience_n a_o certain_a feel_n in_o the_o hart_n resemble_v the_o righteous_a judgement_n of_o god_n follow_v upon_o a_o deed_n do_v by_o we_o flow_v from_o a_o knowledge_n in_o the_o mind_n a_o feeling_n accompany_v with_o a_o motion_n in_o the_o hart_n a_o motion_n either_o of_o fear_n or_o joy_n tremble_a or_o rejoice_v i_o leave_v the_o open_n up_o of_o these_o part_n to_o your_o memory_n and_o i_o pray_v god_n that_o they_o may_v be_v well_o sanctify_v i_o come_v next_o to_o the_o cause_n wherefore_o every_o one_o of_o you_o shall_v be_v careful_a in_o try_v and_o examine_v your_o own_o conscience_n the_o first_o cause_n be_v because_o the_o lord_n of_o heaven_n have_v his_o eye_n continual_o upon_o the_o conscience_n the_o eye_n of_o god_n be_v never_o from_o the_o conscience_n and_o heart_n of_o man_n as_o i_o prove_v to_o you_o by_o diverse_a place_n next_o because_o this_o god_n have_v choose_v his_o lodging_n and_o have_v set_v down_o his_o throne_n to_o make_v his_o residence_n in_o the_o conscience_n therefore_o that_o he_o may_v dwell_v in_o cleanness_n you_o ought_v to_o have_v a_o regard_n to_o his_o dwell_a place_n three_o he_o be_v the_o lord_n yea_o the_o only_a lord_n of_o this_o conscience_n who_o have_v power_n only_o to_o control_v who_o only_o have_v power_n to_o save_v or_o to_o cast_v away_o therefore_o that_o it_o may_v do_v good_a service_n to_o thy_o own_o lord_n thou_o ought_v to_o take_v heed_n to_o thy_o conscience_n and_o last_o of_o all_o in_o respect_n that_o the_o health_n of_o thy_o soul_n stand_v in_o the_o estate_n of_o thy_o conscience_n and_o if_o thy_o soul_n be_v in_o good_a health_n thy_o body_n can_v be_v ill_o therefore_o in_o respect_n that_o the_o soul_n and_o body_n depend_v upon_o the_o estate_n of_o the_o conscience_n every_o one_o of_o you_o shall_v careful_o look_v to_o your_o conscience_n i_o will_v not_o amplify_v this_o but_o leave_v it_o to_o your_o memory_n how_o the_o health_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o welfare_n of_o the_o soul_n shall_v be_v keep_v next_o i_o come_v in_o the_o three_o and_o last_o place_n to_o the_o point_n in_o the_o which_o every_o one_o of_o you_o shall_v try_v and_o examine_v your_o conscience_n and_o as_o you_o may_v remember_v i_o set_v down_o two_o point_n wherein_o you_o ought_v to_o put_v your_o conscience_n in_o trial_n first_o to_o know_v whether_o your_o conscience_n be_v at_o peace_n with_o god_n or_o not_o second_o whether_o your_o conscience_n be_v in_o love_n in_o charity_n and_o in_o amity_n with_o your_o neighbour_n or_o not_o in_o these_o two_o point_n chief_o you_o must_v try_v and_o examine_v yourselves_o to_o know_v whether_o you_o be_v at_o peace_n with_o god_n or_o not_o you_o must_v first_o try_v whether_o you_o be_v in_o the_o faith_n or_o not_o as_o the_o apostle_n
without_o great_a bitterness_n and_o continual_a remorse_n and_o these_o sparkle_n where_o they_o be_v will_v make_v the_o soul_n wherein_o they_o dwell_v to_o utter_v these_o speech_n at_o one_o time_n or_o other_o once_o in_o the_o twenty-foure_a hour_n alas_o i_o be_o do_v the_o evil_a which_o i_o will_v not_o do_v if_o i_o have_v power_n or_o strength_n to_o resist_v my_o affection_n and_o if_o i_o may_v be_v master_n of_o my_o affection_n i_o will_v not_o for_o all_o the_o world_n do_v the_o evil_n which_o i_o do_v again_o if_o i_o have_v power_n to_o do_v the_o good_a which_o i_o will_v do_v i_o will_v not_o leave_v it_o undo_v for_o all_o the_o world_n so_o these_o sparkle_n though_o they_o have_v not_o such_o force_n and_o strength_n present_o aâ—_n to_o resist_v the_o affection_n and_o abstain_v from_o do_v evil_a deed_n yet_o perpetual_o in_o the_o hart_n they_o be_v find_v fault_n with_o thy_o corruption_n and_o suffer_v thou_o not_o to_o take_v thy_o pleasure_n without_o pain_n but_o last_o of_o all_o force_v thou_o to_o utter_v these_o speech_n if_o i_o have_v strength_n to_o resist_v i_o will_v not_o do_v the_o evil_n which_o i_o do_v where_o these_o speech_n be_v no_o question_n they_o be_v the_o word_n of_o a_o soul_n which_o the_o lord_n have_v begin_v to_o sanctify_v and_o be_v once_o sanctify_v in_o despite_n of_o the_o devil_n and_o of_o the_o corruption_n that_o be_v in_o we_o this_o faith_n shall_v never_o perish_v but_o if_o the_o whole_a soul_n without_o contradiction_n with_o a_o greedy_a appetite_n and_o pleasure_n be_v carry_v to_o evil_a and_o have_v no_o sorrow_n for_o it_o that_o soul_n be_v in_o a_o ill_a estate_n i_o can_v look_v for_o nothing_o in_o such_o a_o soul_n but_o death_n except_o the_o lord_n of_o his_o great_a mercy_n prevent_v it_o but_o where_o this_o remorse_n and_o sorrow_n and_o such_o speech_n be_v in_o the_o soul_n that_o soul_n in_o the_o time_n that_o god_n have_v appoint_v shall_v recover_v strength_n the_o lord_n shall_v never_o suffer_v those_o sparkle_n to_o be_v whole_o take_v away_o but_o in_o his_o own_o time_n he_o shall_v fortify_v they_o and_o make_v they_o to_o break_v out_o before_o the_o world_n in_o good_a work_n the_o lord_n in_o his_o own_o time_n will_v sanctify_v they_o he_o will_v scatter_v the_o ash_n of_o corruption_n stir_v up_o the_o sparkle_n &_o make_v they_o to_o break_v out_o into_o a_o better_a life_n than_o ever_o they_o do_v before_o as_o you_o may_v clear_o see_v that_o david_n repentance_n have_v do_v more_o good_a to_o the_o church_n of_o god_n then_o if_o he_o have_v never_o fall_v thus_o far_o concern_v the_o effect_n though_o the_o effect_n of_o repentance_n be_v interrupt_v extinguish_v similitude_n show_v that_o the_o sparkle_n of_o faith_n though_o they_o be_v cover_v be_v not_o extinguish_v yet_o those_o sparkle_n be_v not_o extinguish_v for_o there_o be_v no_o man_n will_v think_v that_o the_o fire_n which_o be_v cover_v with_o ash_n be_v extinguish_v but_o be_v stir_v up_o in_o the_o morning_n it_o will_v burn_v as_o clear_o as_o it_o do_v the_o night_n before_o there_o be_v no_o man_n will_v think_v the_o tree_n that_o now_o in_o the_o time_n of_o winter_n want_v leaf_n fruit_n and_o external_a beauty_n to_o be_v dead_a there_o be_v no_o man_n will_v think_v the_o sun_n to_o be_v out_o of_o the_o firmament_n though_o it_o be_v overshadow_a with_o a_o cloud_n of_o darkness_n and_o mist_n there_o be_v great_a difference_n between_o a_o sleep_a disease_n and_o death_n for_o man_n be_v not_o dead_a though_o they_o be_v sleep_v and_o yet_o there_o be_v nothing_o like_a unto_o death_n than_o sleep_n as_o there_o be_v great_a difference_n betwixt_o a_o drunken_a man_n and_o a_o dead_a man_n so_o there_o be_v great_a odds_o betwixt_o the_o faith_n that_o lie_v hide_v for_o awhile_o &_o utter_v not_o itself_o and_o the_o light_n that_o be_v utter_o put_v out_o when_o we_o break_v not_o forth_o into_o outward_a deed_n god_n forbid_v that_o we_o shall_v think_v that_o these_o sparkle_n be_v whole_o extinguish_v indeed_o the_o soul_n which_o be_v visit_v after_o foul_a and_o heinous_a backslide_n from_o his_o call_n and_o against_o his_o knowledge_n before_o this_o foul_a recover_v the_o former_a beauty_n it_o be_v in_o a_o strange_a danger_n for_o if_o the_o lord_n suffer_v thy_o corruption_n to_o get_v loose_a in_o such_o sort_n that_o it_o carry_v thou_o as_o it_o will_v and_o by_o all_o mean_v possible_a make_v thou_o to_o labour_n to_o put_v out_o the_o sparkle_n of_o regeneration_n when_o the_o lord_n begin_v to_o challenge_v thou_o or_o to_o make_v thou_o render_v a_o account_n of_o this_o life_n past_a the_o soul_n of_o that_o man_n when_o it_o be_v challenge_v be_v in_o great_a danger_n so_o that_o no_o question_n when_o the_o lord_n begin_v to_o lay_v to_o your_o charge_n your_o dissolute_a life_n the_o contempt_n and_o abuse_n of_o your_o call_n assure_o your_o soul_n be_v so_o near_o to_o the_o brink_n of_o desperation_n that_o there_o can_v be_v nothing_o near_o for_o will_v thou_o look_v to_o god_n thou_o will_v see_v nothing_o but_o his_o anger_n kindle_v as_o a_o fire_n against_o thou_o will_v thou_o look_v to_o thyself_o thou_o will_v see_v nothing_o but_o sin_n provoke_v his_o anger_n thou_o will_v see_v the_o contempt_n a_o soul_n that_o be_v so_o near_o to_o the_o brink_n of_o desperation_n may_v repose_v tentation_n a_o sure_a retreat_n to_o repose_v on_o in_o high_a tentation_n i_o will_v show_v you_o the_o help_n whereupon_o when_o thou_o be_v assault_v by_o all_o the_o great_a tentation_n thou_o can_v imagine_v when_o there_o be_v nothing_o before_o thou_o but_o death_n when_o thou_o see_v the_o devil_n accuse_v thou_o thou_o own_o conscience_n bear_v he_o witness_v against_o thou_o thy_o life_n accuse_v thou_o and_o the_o abuse_n of_o thy_o calling_n accuse_v thou_o whither_o shall_v thou_o go_v look_v back_o again_o to_o thy_o forepast_a experience_n cast_v over_o thy_o memory_n and_o remember_v if_o god_n at_o any_o time_n and_o in_o any_o measure_n have_v love_v thou_o if_o ever_o thou_o have_v feel_v the_o love_n and_o favour_n of_o god_n in_o thy_o hart_n and_o conscience_n remember_v if_o ever_o the_o lord_n have_v so_o dispose_v thy_o hart_n that_o as_o he_o love_v thou_o thou_o love_v he_o &_o have_v a_o desire_n to_o obtain_v he_o remember_v this_o and_o repose_v thy_o assurance_n on_o this_o that_o as_o he_o love_v thou_o once_o he_o will_v love_v thou_o ever_o and_o will_v assure_o restore_v thou_o to_o that_o love_n before_o thou_o departe_v this_o life_n the_o hart_n that_o feel_v once_o this_o love_n of_o god_n shall_v feel_v it_o again_o and_o look_v what_o gift_n or_o grace_n or_o what_o taste_n of_o the_o power_n of_o the_o world_n to_o come_v that_o ever_o the_o lord_n give_v to_o his_o creature_n in_o this_o life_n to_o that_o same_o degree_n of_o you_o if_o thou_o come_v not_o with_o a_o heart_n mind_v to_o obey_v christ_n at_o the_o least_o more_o than_o thou_o be_v wont_a to_o do_v thou_o come_v unto_o thy_o own_o damnation_n and_o if_o particular_o there_o be_v not_o one_o of_o you_o but_o have_v great_a cause_n to_o take_v heed_n to_o your_o conscience_n now_o while_o you_o have_v time_n that_o you_o banish_v not_o altogether_o a_o decay_a fear_n a_o fear_n that_o will_v devour_v they_o whole_o at_o the_o last_o therefore_o every_o one_o of_o you_o be_v careful_a of_o this_o light_n that_o be_v within_o you_o take_v heed_n that_o the_o foul_a affection_n of_o your_o heart_n draw_v not_o your_o body_n after_o they_o see_v at_o the_o least_o that_o those_o affection_n banish_v not_o this_o light_n and_o so_o long_o as_o the_o lord_n offer_v you_o this_o light_n in_o time_n crave_v that_o of_o his_o mercy_n he_o will_v give_v you_o the_o grace_n to_o embrace_v it_o to_o take_v a_o new_a course_n and_o yet_o to_o amend_v your_o life_n while_o time_n be_v give_v you_o the_o body_n shall_v leave_v the_o soul_n and_o the_o soul_n shall_v leave_v the_o body_n but_o the_o conscience_n shall_v never_o leave_v the_o apprehension_n follow_v not_o we_o can_v digest_v he_o and_o if_o we_o digest_v he_o not_o that_o spiritual_a life_n can_v grow_v in_o we_o for_o mark_n in_o what_o place_n the_o eye_n serve_v to_o the_o body_n in_o the_o same_o room_n serve_v knowledge_n and_o understand_v to_o thy_o soul_n and_o look_v in_o what_o place_n thy_o hand_n and_o thy_o mouth_n thy_o taste_n and_o thy_o stomach_n serve_v unto_o thy_o body_n in_o that_o very_a place_n serve_v the_o hart_n and_o affection_n to_o thy_o soul_n so_o that_o as_o our_o body_n can_v be_v nourish_v except_o our_o hand_n take_v and_o our_o mouth_n eat_v the_o meat_n whereby_o the_o second_o apprehension_n may_v follow_v likewise_o our_o soul_n can_v feed_v on_o christ_n except_o we_o hold_v he_o and_o embrace_v he_o hearty_o by_o our_o will_n and_o affection_n for_o we_o come_v not_o to_o christ_n by_o any_o outward_a motion_n of_o our_o body_n but_o by_o a_o inward_a motion_n and_o apprehension_n of_o the_o hart_n for_o god_n find_v we_o all_o in_o a_o reprobate_a sense_n he_o bring_v we_o to_o christ_n by_o reform_v the_o affection_n of_o our_o soul_n by_o make_v we_o to_o love_v he_o and_o therefore_o the_o second_o apprehension_n whereby_o we_o digest_v our_o saviour_n will_v never_o enter_v into_o our_o soul_n except_o as_o he_o please_v the_o eye_n so_o he_o please_v the_o will_n and_o the_o affection_n also_o like_n in_o your_o mind_n and_o such_o a_o love_n in_o your_o heart_n of_o christ_n that_o you_o will_v prefer_v he_o before_o all_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n then_o no_o question_n faith_n be_v begin_v in_o you_o now_o us._n how_o faith_n be_v nourish_v and_o entertain_v in_o us._n after_o a_o thing_n be_v begin_v there_o be_v yet_o more_o require_v for_o though_o this_o faith_n be_v form_v wealth_n withdraws_a their_o heart_n and_o the_o abundance_n of_o this_o word_n engender_v such_o a_o loathsomnesse_n that_o it_o be_v a_o rare_a thing_n to_o find_v out_o any_o that_o have_v that_o spirit_n whereby_o you_o may_v try_v your_o mind_n whether_o you_o be_v in_o the_o faith_n oâ—_n not_o be_v this_o revolve_v in_o your_o memory_n and_o remember_v if_o at_o any_o time_n it_o please_v the_o lord_n in_o his_o mercy_n to_o turn_v the_o darkness_n of_o your_o mind_n into_o light_n to_o cause_v that_o natural_a darkness_n which_o be_v within_o you_o to_o depart_v through_o the_o which_o darkness_n neither_o have_v you_o a_o eye_n to_o see_v yourselves_o what_o you_o be_v by_o nature_n nor_o yet_o have_v you_o a_o eye_n to_o see_v god_n in_o christ_n nor_o any_o part_n of_o his_o mercy_n examine_v i_o say_v whether_o this_o darkness_n of_o the_o natural_a understanding_n be_v turn_v into_o light_n by_o the_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n or_o not_o if_o thou_o be_v become_v a_o child_n of_o the_o light_n a_o child_n of_o the_o day_n if_o thou_o be_v become_v as_o the_o apostle_n speak_v light_a in_o the_o lord_n if_o there_o be_v this_o alteration_n make_v in_o thy_o mind_n that_o whereas_o natural_o before_o it_o be_v close_v up_o in_o darkness_n whereas_o it_o be_v fill_v with_o vanity_n and_o error_n wheren_n it_o be_v close_v up_o in_o blindness_n if_o the_o heinous_a sin_n in_o the_o which_o by_o nature_n thou_o lie_v if_o he_o have_v grant_v to_o thou_o a_o insight_n of_o thyself_o in_o some_o measure_n and_o on_o the_o other_o side_n if_o he_o have_v grant_v thou_o the_o remedy_n and_o have_v give_v thou_o a_o insight_n of_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n if_o thou_o have_v obtain_v a_o insight_n of_o the_o riches_n of_o his_o grace_n in_o christ_n no_o doubt_n the_o holy_a spirit_n have_v begin_v a_o good_a work_n work_n in_o thou_o a_o work_n which_o will_v bring_v forth_o repentance_n which_o in_o his_o own_o time_n he_o will_v perfect_v so_o this_o be_v the_o first_o care_n which_o you_o ought_v to_o have_v and_o the_o first_o point_n wherein_o you_o ought_v to_o examine_v your_o mind_n to_o see_v if_o there_o be_v any_o light_n in_o it_o whereby_o you_o may_v know_v your_o misery_n and_o have_v a_o insight_n of_o the_o free_a mercy_n of_o god_n in_o christ_n jesus_n this_o be_v do_v that_o thou_o find_v a_o sight_n of_o these_o two_o in_o thy_o mind_n from_o thy_o mind_n go_v to_o thy_o heart_n and_o as_o thou_o have_v try_v thy_o mind_n so_o try_v thy_o heart_n and_o first_o examine_v thy_o heart_n if_o it_o be_v alter_v or_o not_o that_o the_o will_n of_o it_o be_v frame_v and_o bow_v to_o gods_n obedience_n that_o thy_o affection_n be_v turn_v into_o the_o life_n of_o god_n and_o be_v pour_v out_o on_o he_o as_o it_o be_v pour_v out_o on_o vanity_n on_o filthiness_n and_o on_o the_o world_n before_o try_v whether_o the_o ground_n of_o thy_o heart_n and_o the_o fountain_n from_o whence_o thy_o motion_n and_o affection_n proceed_v be_v sanctify_v or_o not_o for_o from_o a_o holy_a fountain_n holy_a water_n must_v distil_v from_o a_o holy_a fountain_n holy_a motion_n holy_a cogitation_n and_o sanctify_a consideration_n must_v flow_v try_v then_o and_o examine_v your_o heart_n if_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n have_v wrought_v any_o such_o reformation_n as_o i_o speak_v of_o in_o your_o heart_n or_o not_o and_o that_o you_o may_v perceive_v the_o work_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n the_o better_a in_o
rest_n and_o peace_n in_o thy_o conscience_n and_o the_o more_o that_o thy_o conscience_n be_v at_o peace_n and_o rest_n the_o great_a shall_v thy_o faith_n and_o persuasion_n be_v so_o this_o ground_n be_v certain_a a_o doubt_a conscience_n cause_v a_o weak_a faith_n and_o the_o more_o the_o doubt_n in_o thy_o conscience_n be_v the_o weak_a be_v thy_o faith_n then_o true_a it_o be_v that_o persuade_v of_o his_o mercy_n who_o anger_n i_o feel_v kindle_v against_o i_o and_o against_o who_o my_o conscience_n show_v i_o that_o i_o be_o guilty_a of_o many_o offence_n no_o question_n so_o long_o as_o the_o sense_n of_o his_o anger_n &_o feel_v of_o my_o offence_n remain_v i_o can_v have_v a_o sure_a persuasion_n that_o he_o will_v be_v merciful_a unto_o i_o but_o when_o i_o get_v conscience_n they_o may_v do_v according_a unto_o the_o measure_n of_o knowledge_n that_o god_n have_v place_v in_o they_o and_o whatsoever_o they_o do_v let_v they_o beware_v that_o they_o do_v not_o against_o their_o knowledge_n i_o grant_v their_o knowledge_n will_v not_o be_v so_o learned_a as_o it_o shall_v be_v and_o this_o make_v many_o deform_a action_n yet_o let_v no_o man_n do_v against_o not_o thy_o eye_n thy_o hand_n nor_o any_o member_n of_o thy_o body_n do_v against_o thy_o knowledge_n for_o this_o be_v a_o step_n to_o that_o high_a sin_n against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n this_o be_v the_o ready_a way_n to_o put_v all_o knowledge_n out_o of_o your_o mind_n for_o if_o man_n do_v against_o knowledge_n and_o continue_v in_o do_v against_o knowledge_n at_o the_o last_o they_o will_v become_v a_o mass_n of_o darkness_n the_o lord_n will_v scrape_v out_o all_o knowledge_n out_o of_o their_o mind_n and_o all_o feel_n of_o mercy_n out_o of_o their_o heart_n therefore_o let_v every_o man_n follow_v his_o knowledge_n and_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o his_o knowledge_n let_v his_o action_n proceed_v it_o have_v please_v the_o lord_n god_n faith_n be_v the_o free_a gift_n of_o god_n to_o pour_v this_o liquor_n this_o precious_a ointment_n into_o we_o though_o we_o be_v earthly_a and_o frail_a vessel_n miserable_a creature_n yet_o it_o have_v please_v our_o gracious_a hart_n be_v incline_v and_o have_v a_o thirst_n to_o seek_v after_o mercy_n and_o grace_n though_o the_o great_a part_n of_o thy_o hart_n repine_v &_o will_v draw_v thou_o from_o prayer_n yet_o he_o in_o who_o thou_o believe_v not_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 10.14_o for_o if_o i_o entreat_v he_o by_o prayer_n i_o must_v trust_v in_o he_o then_o prayer_n be_v a_o certain_a argument_n of_o justify_v faith_n and_o belief_n in_o god_n for_o i_o can_v speak_v to_o he_o much_o less_o pray_v to_o he_o in_o who_o i_o trust_v not_o and_o though_o the_o hart_n be_v not_o full_o resolve_v and_o well_o dispose_v yet_o if_o there_o be_v any_o part_n of_o the_o heart_n that_o incline_v to_o prayer_n it_o be_v a_o sure_a gage_n that_o that_o part_n believe_v the_o second_o effect_n whereby_o thou_o shall_v know_v whether_o faith_n be_v in_o thou_o or_o not_o be_v this_o observe_v &_o advise_v with_o thyself_o if_o thy_o hart_n can_v be_v content_a to_o renounce_v thy_o rancour_n to_o forgive_v thy_o grudge_n and_o that_o free_o for_o god_n cause_n can_v thou_o do_v this_o and_o will_v thou_o forgive_v thy_o neighbour_n as_o free_o as_o god_n have_v forgive_v thou_o assure_o this_o be_v a_o effect_n of_o the_o right_a spirit_n for_o nature_n can_v never_o give_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o whereunto_o nature_n bend_v itself_o more_o then_o to_o rancour_n and_o envy_n and_o there_o be_v nothing_o wherein_o nature_n place_v her_o honour_n more_o greedy_o then_o in_o privy_a revenge_n now_o if_o thy_o heart_n be_v so_o tame_v and_o bring_v down_o that_o it_o will_v hell_n the_o three_o effect_n of_o faith_n be_v compassion_n thou_o must_v bow_v thy_o hart_n &_o extend_v thy_o pity_n unto_o the_o poor_a member_n of_o christ_n his_o body_n and_o suffer_v they_o not_o to_o want_v if_o thou_o have_v for_o except_o you_o have_v this_o compassion_n you_o have_v no_o faith_n examine_v yourselves_o by_o these_o three_o effect_n and_o if_o you_o find_v these_o in_o any_o measure_n though_o never_o so_o small_a you_o have_v the_o right_a faith_n in_o your_o heart_n the_o faith_n that_o you_o have_v be_v true_a and_o lively_a and_o assure_o god_n will_v be_v merciful_a unto_o you_o this_o faith_n of_o we_o doubt_v our_o faith_n must_v be_v continual_o nourish_v because_o it_o be_v join_v with_o doubt_v though_o it_o be_v lively_a yet_o it_o be_v not_o perfect_a in_o this_o world_n but_o every_o day_n &_o every_o hour_n it_o need_v a_o continual_a augmentation_n it_o crave_v ever_o to_o be_v nourish_v for_o the_o which_o increase_n the_o apostle_n lodge_v in_o one_o soul_n as_o i_o have_v often_o say_v may_v lodge_v in_o one_o soul_n with_o faith_n for_o doubt_v and_o faith_n be_v not_o direct_o opposite_a only_a faith_n and_o despair_n be_v opposite_a and_o therefore_o faith_n and_o despair_n can_v both_o lodge_n in_o one_o soul_n for_o despair_n overthrow_v the_o pillar_n of_o hope_n and_o where_o there_o be_v no_o hope_n there_o can_v be_v no_o faith_n but_o as_o for_o doubt_v it_o may_v lodge_v it_o will_v lodge_v and_o have_v lodge_v in_o the_o soul_n of_o the_o best_a servant_n that_o
ever_o god_n have_v mark_v the_o speech_n of_o the_o apostle_n we_o be_v always_o in_o doubt_n say_v he_o but_o we_o despair_v not_o so_o doubt_v and_o faith_n may_v lodge_v in_o one_o soul_n and_o from_o whence_o flow_v this_o doubt_v we_o know_v that_o in_o the_o regenerate_a man_n there_o be_v a_o remnant_n corruption_n for_o we_o have_v not_o our_o heaven_n in_o this_o earth_n though_o we_o begin_v our_o heaven_n here_o yet_o we_o get_v it_o not_o full_o here_o and_o if_o all_o corruption_n be_v away_o what_o shall_v there_o want_n of_o a_o full_a heaven_n here_o so_o it_o be_v only_o begin_v in_o this_o life_n and_o not_o perfect_v therefore_o there_o remain_v in_o the_o soul_n a_o great_a corruption_n which_o be_v never_o idle_a but_o continual_o occupy_v this_o corruption_n be_v ever_o bring_v forth_o the_o birth_n of_o fin_n more_o or_o less_o every_o sin_n hurt_v the_o conscience_n a_o hurt_a conscience_n impair_v the_o persuasion_n and_o so_o come_v in_o the_o doubt_n for_o there_o be_v not_o a_o sin_n that_o we_o commit_v but_o it_o banish_v light_a and_o cast_v a_o mist_n over_o the_o eye_n of_o our_o faith_n whereby_o we_o doubt_v and_o stagger_v in_o our_o sight_n and_o be_v it_o not_o that_o the_o lord_n in_o his_o mercy_n take_v we_o up_o give_v we_o the_o gift_n of_o repentance_n and_o make_v we_o every_o day_n as_o oft_o as_o we_o sin_n to_o cry_v and_o weak_a faith_n be_v faith_n &_o shall_v never_o decay_v that_o the_o faith_n of_o the_o best_a child_n of_o god_n be_v often_o subject_a to_o doubt_v yet_o it_o be_v as_o sure_a and_o certain_a repentance_n but_o among_o all_o his_o gift_n that_o be_v of_o this_o sort_n faith_n be_v one_o of_o the_o chief_a therefore_o it_o can_v be_v revoke_v again_o you_o have_v in_o jude_n 3_o that_o and_o oppress_v his_o faith_n it_o will_v oft_o time_n come_v to_o pass_v in_o his_o own_o judgement_n have_v his_o eye_n fix_v on_o himself_o only_o that_o he_o will_v think_v himself_o to_o be_v a_o reprobate_n to_o be_v a_o outcast_n and_o never_o able_a to_o recover_v mercy_n where_o this_o corruption_n burst_v forth_o in_o this_o gross_a manner_n after_o that_o the_o lord_n have_v call_v thou_o look_v how_o soon_o the_o lord_n begin_v to_o waken_v thou_o again_o incontinent_a thou_o fixe_v thy_o eye_n upon_o thy_o own_o life_n and_o enterest_n into_o a_o deep_a consideration_n as_o be_v idle_a though_o they_o break_v not_o forth_o in_o the_o outward_a effect_n that_o the_o world_n may_v know_v thou_o to_o be_v a_o faithful_a man_n as_o heretofore_o yet_o these_o sparkle_n be_v
