grace_n alas_o he_o be_v in_o a_o troublesome_a condition_n all_o the_o day_n after_o if_o he_o find_v not_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o it_o such_o a_o one_o have_v no_o quiet_a in_o his_o spirit_n all_o the_o day_n after_o why_o because_o there_o have_v not_o be_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o his_o duty_n and_o therefore_o he_o be_v trouble_v all_o the_o day_n long_o but_o now_o let_v such_o a_o one_o come_v to_o prayer_n to_o purpose_n in_o the_o morning_n and_o stir_v up_o the_o life_n and_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o prayer_n worship_v god_n as_o a_o god_n oh_o the_o ease_n and_o quiet_a that_o such_o a_o one_o have_v all_o the_o day_n he_o can_v go_v on_o in_o his_o work_n and_o can_v sing_v at_o his_o work_n so_o that_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o gracious_a heart_n come_v from_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o a_o duty_n and_o from_o the_o spiritualness_n that_o be_v in_o a_o duty_n but_o the_o ease_n of_o a_o carnal_a heart_n come_v from_o the_o formality_n of_o a_o duty_n as_o because_o the_o duty_n be_v formal_a and_o he_o think_v that_o it_o be_v the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n and_o this_o be_v pretty_a well_o it_o be_v easy_a indeed_o to_o have_v no_o other_o yoke_n than_o this_o to_o worship_n god_n in_o a_o few_o word_n and_o not_o to_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o the_o duty_n and_o so_o we_o may_v instance_n in_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n you_o come_v to_o the_o word_n bare_o you_o rise_v out_o of_o your_o bed_n and_o come_v and_o sit_v here_o a_o hour_n that_o be_v easy_a enough_o but_o now_o if_o you_o come_v to_o the_o word_n with_o preparation_n and_o think_v now_o i_o be_o go_v into_o the_o presence_n of_o god_n to_o hear_v what_o god_n have_v to_o say_v to_o my_o soul_n this_o morning_n oh_o my_o soul_n
deal_n of_o ease_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o jew_n that_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n because_o that_o their_o service_n itself_o be_v very_o chargeable_a to_o their_o outward_a estate_n their_o sacrifice_n that_o they_o do_v offer_v up_o to_o god_n how_o chargeable_a be_v it_o what_o a_o great_a part_n of_o the_o estate_n of_o man_n do_v go_v forth_o partly_o in_o the_o maintenance_n of_o their_o levite_n there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o murmur_v now_o for_o a_o little_a money_n for_o maintenance_n of_o minister_n but_o there_o if_o the_o account_n be_v sum_v up_o the_o maintenance_n of_o the_o levite_n be_v a_o great_a part_n of_o their_o estate_n not_o bare_o the_o ten_o of_o their_o sacrifice_n they_o have_v their_o city_n divers_a forty_o or_o more_o city_n that_o be_v they_o for_o their_o possession_n and_o many_o thing_n may_v be_v show_v that_o way_n the_o mighty_a charge_n that_o they_o be_v at_o for_o the_o service_n of_o god_n several_a way_n not_o tithe_n only_o but_o city_n and_o the_o like_a now_o god_n have_v in_o a_o great_a part_n ease_v we_o of_o those_o thing_n that_o he_o require_v of_o the_o people_n of_o the_o jew_n there_o be_v nothing_o now_o require_v but_o what_o be_v in_o moral_a equity_n what_o be_v in_o common_a reason_n due_a to_o the_o laborer_n for_o his_o work_n only_o somewhat_o be_v due_a by_o that_o scripture_n thou_o shall_v not_o muzzle_n the_o mouth_n of_o the_o ox_n that_o tread_v out_o the_o corn_n so_o that_o all_o the_o maintenance_n now_o for_o the_o work_n of_o god_n be_v due_a in_o a_o way_n of_o common_a reason_n but_o there_o be_v other_o thing_n require_v in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o jew_n and_o that_o be_v a_o ease_n that_o be_v very_o suitable_a to_o many_o man_n to_o have_v ease_v that_o way_n from_o their_o outward_a service_n yet_o certain_o the_o lord_n as_o we_o shall_v hear_v more_o by_o and_o by_o require_v of_o we_o more_o service_n other_o way_n and_o then_o three_o in_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n there_o the_o very_a service_n of_o god_n have_v a_o kind_n of_o burden_n in_o it_o for_o there_o be_v so_o many_o external_a performance_n that_o the_o holy_a ghost_n call_v they_o beggarly_a rudiment_n so_o many_o outward_a ceremony_n outward_a thing_n that_o be_v a_o burden_n to_o the_o outward_a man_n and_o they_o be_v mean_a thing_n and_o childish_a thing_n in_o comparison_n of_o the_o gospel_n they_o be_v call_v by_o the_o apostle_n beggarly_a rudiment_n and_o true_o one_o will_v think_v that_o when_o we_o shall_v read_v such_o a_o scripture_n as_o that_o that_o shall_v call_v the_o ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n beggarly_a rudiment_n that_o be_v the_o ceremony_n appoint_v by_o god_n himself_o and_o yet_o when_o they_o come_v to_o be_v abrogate_a they_o be_v call_v but_o beggarly_a rudiment_n one_o will_v admire_v how_o it_o be_v possible_a that_o any_o one_o that_o profess_v christianity_n shall_v come_v and_o conform_v themselves_o to_o so_o many_o ceremony_n as_o they_o have_v do_v to_o such_o beggarly_a rudiment_n certain_o these_o must_v needs_o be_v beggarly_a rudiment_n much_o more_o and_o what_o a_o strange_a pass_n be_v we_o bring_v into_o that_o we_o shall_v count_v such_o thing_n the_o great_a ornament_n of_o god_n service_n whenas_o god_n do_v not_o require_v they_o but_o at_o that_o time_n and_o that_o they_o be_v so_o vilify_v by_o god_n now_o but_o invention_n be_v never_o require_v by_o god_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v to_o be_v account_v more_o vile_a and_o it_o be_v a_o great_a mercy_n to_o be_v deliver_v from_o the_o bondage_n of_o the_o outward_a ceremony_n of_o the_o law_n though_o such_o thing_n as_o be_v once_o appoint_v by_o god_n to_o spend_v so_o many_o day_n as_o they_o do_v from_o their_o outward_a business_n this_o be_v somewhat_o sure_o if_o it_o be_v in_o man_n power_n to_o appoint_v ceremony_n and_o make_v day_n holy_a as_o many_o do_v undertake_v heretofore_o we_o have_v be_v bring_v into_o a_o great_a bondage_n than_o ever_o the_o jew_n be_v under_o the_o law_n but_o christ_n will_v have_v ease_n in_o the_o outward_a administration_n of_o his_o worship_n and_o then_o likewise_o though_o god_n have_v appoint_v some_o outward_a thing_n yet_o very_a few_o for_o the_o outward_a part_n of_o his_o worship_n what_o a_o few_o thing_n be_v appoint_v by_o jesus_n christ_n whereas_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n there_o be_v multitude_n of_o external_a thing_n yea_o and_o how_o easy_a be_v they_o that_o christ_n have_v appoint_v for_o the_o outward_a part_n of_o his_o worship_n whereas_o in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n it_o be_v hard_a as_o circumcision_n what_o a_o hard_a thing_n be_v it_o to_o have_v to_o foreskin_n of_o the_o flesh_n cut_v off_o and_o you_o know_v it_o make_v they_o sore_o when_o the_o man_n of_o sichem_n be_v circumcise_v they_o be_v so_o sore_o that_o two_o or_o three_o man_n be_v able_a to_o destroy_v a_o whole_a city_n now_o christ_n have_v require_v no_o such_o hardness_n of_o we_o and_o true_o that_o may_v be_v one_o thing_n that_o may_v make_v we_o much_o doubt_n of_o the_o way_n of_o many_o that_o put_v people_n upon_o such_o way_n as_o in_o the_o winter_n time_n to_o go_v into_o river_n and_o venture_v their_o health_n &_o life_n as_o they_o do_v certain_o christ_n require_v no_o such_o thing_n if_o christ_n do_v require_v such_o a_o thing_n i_o dare_v appeal_n to_o any_o to_o give_v i_o any_o one_o place_n in_o the_o old_a testament_n where_o there_o be_v a_o hard_a commandment_n than_o that_o if_o that_o be_v a_o commandment_n than_o christ_n yoke_n in_o that_o one_o thing_n be_v hard_a than_o any_o one_o thing_n that_o christ_n require_v of_o the_o jew_n no_o one_o duty_n so_o difficult_a to_o the_o outward_a man_n as_o that_o thing_n iâ—_n now_o certain_o the_o yoke_n of_o christ_n as_o he_o himself_o say_v it_o be_v but_o easy_a it_o be_v not_o hard_o to_o the_o outward_a man_n in_o such_o external_a service_n christ_n do_v not_o change_v one_o ordinance_n from_o another_o to_o make_v it_o hard_o there_o be_v no_o ordinance_n that_o christ_n do_v change_v from_o the_o law_n to_o the_o gospel_n to_o make_v it_o hard_o and_o there_o be_v no_o mercy_n that_o be_v allow_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n but_o be_v allow_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o further_o that_o be_v another_o argument_n that_o be_v very_o persuasive_a to_o the_o believer_n and_o his_o child_n for_o if_o god_n shall_v deny_v this_o condition_n to_o the_o child_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o be_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n it_o will_v make_v the_o gospel_n to_o be_v hard_a than_o the_o law_n and_o the_o truth_n be_v the_o deny_v such_o a_o mercy_n to_o believer_n child_n will_v be_v a_o hard_a yoke_n to_o believer_n a_o great_a burden_n to_o they_o than_o all_o the_o ceremony_n be_v to_o the_o jew_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law._n as_o suppose_v this_o if_o a_o believer_n shall_v plead_v thus_o lord_n there_o be_v a_o time_n when_o thou_o do_v not_o only_o receive_v i_o into_o covenant_n but_o receive_v my_o child_n too_o and_o give_v my_o child_n the_o seal_n of_o the_o covenant_n likewise_o and_o there_o be_v a_o time_n that_o i_o have_v such_o a_o privilege_n that_o not_o only_o i_o but_o my_o child_n be_v in_o a_o different_a condition_n from_o the_o heathen_a the_o heathen_a round_o about_o i_o be_v not_o in_o such_o a_o condition_n as_o i_o be_v in_o in_o regard_n of_o my_o posterity_n and_o i_o count_v this_o a_o great_a mercy_n but_o lord_n since_o the_o time_n i_o be_v convert_v and_o embrace_v christian_a religion_n and_o since_o the_o time_n that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v come_v as_o suppose_v a_o jew_a shall_v speak_v thus_o one_o that_o be_v a_o jew_a before_o christ_n time_n and_o shall_v live_v till_o christ_n come_v and_o shall_v plead_v thus_o lord_n have_v thou_o bring_v a_o great_a burden_n on_o i_o since_o christ_n come_v than_o i_o have_v before_o christ_n come_v for_o before_o christ_n come_v i_o have_v such_o a_o liberty_n that_o be_v as_o dear_a to_o i_o as_o my_o life_n that_o i_o will_v not_o be_v without_o for_o all_o the_o world_n that_o i_o shall_v not_o only_o have_v myself_o but_o my_o child_n separate_v from_o the_o world_n and_o be_v in_o covenant_n with_o thou_o and_o under_o the_o seal_n of_o thy_o grace_n but_o lord_n since_o christ_n come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o since_o i_o embrace_v religion_n though_o i_o may_v come_v and_o take_v the_o seal_n though_o i_o may_v be_v in_o covenant_n with_o thou_o yet_o now_o my_o child_n may_v not_o there_o be_v no_o
what_o you_o do_v now_o and_o if_o they_o see_v that_o since_o you_o begin_v to_o go_v to_o sermon_n and_o to_o make_v more_o profession_n of_o religion_n that_o your_o life_n be_v more_o fill_v with_o discomfort_n and_o vex_v and_o fret_v and_o discouragement_n than_o before_o what_o will_v they_o say_v what_o way_n be_v these_o who_o will_v come_v into_o these_o way_n they_o make_v theâ—_n mad_a and_o make_v they_o fool_n and_o unfit_a they_o for_o any_o business_n oh_o this_o be_v a_o shame_n to_o he_o way_n of_o christ_n though_o it_o be_v true_a now_o thou_o see_v more_o cause_n of_o humiliation_n than_o before_o but_o for_o all_o this_o know_v that_o this_o be_v not_o legal_a humiliation_n but_o evangelical_a humiliation_n and_o there_o be_v sweetness_n in_o that_o bitter_a of_o sin_n if_o thou_o understand_v it_o in_o a_o evangelical_a way_n and_o though_o thou_o shall_v mourn_v for_o thy_o sin_n yet_o thou_o shall_v carry_v thyself_o with_o that_o gentleness_n and_o humility_n and_o meekness_n in_o thy_o spirit_n thou_o shall_v discover_v that_o sweetness_n of_o heart_n and_o cheerfulness_n and_o activeness_n in_o your_o calling_n go_v about_o your_o business_n better_o than_o ever_o before_o that_o they_o may_v say_v sure_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n be_v easy_a and_o so_o other_o may_v be_v in_o love_n with_o they_o but_o if_o other_o shall_v see_v you_o to_o be_v more_o high_a and_o lofty_a in_o your_o spirit_n more_o proud_a more_o disdain_v more_o neglective_a in_o your_o calling_n and_o more_o cross_a in_o your_o carriage_n than_o before_o than_o they_o will_v be_v keep_v off_o from_o those_o way_n consequence_n 5._o again_o if_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n be_v so_o easy_a certain_o jesus_n christ_n will_v expect_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o service_n from_o you_o because_o he_o give_v you_o much_o ease_n a_o man_n that_o walk_v at_o liberty_n he_o may_v walk_v apace_o a_o porter_n that_o have_v a_o great_a burden_n upon_o he_o whilst_o no_o weight_n upon_o you_o in_o his_o way_n then_o let_v we_o run_v the_o way_n of_o god_n commandment_n believer_n in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n they_o have_v shackle_n they_o have_v a_o weight_n a_o burden_n upon_o they_o and_o therefore_o no_o marvel_n we_o do_v not_o read_v of_o so_o much_o holiness_n and_o spiritualness_n in_o the_o way_n of_o the_o godly_a in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n general_o because_o i_o say_v their_o yoke_n be_v heavy_a and_o therefore_o they_o do_v drive_v very_o slow_o on_o but_o now_o when_o jesus_n christ_n be_v come_v into_o the_o world_n and_o have_v take_v our_o yoke_n from_o we_o certain_o christ_n expect_v that_o we_o shall_v now_o go_v on_o free_o in_o his_o way_n and_o abound_v in_o the_o work_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o do_v more_o than_o they_o do_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o law_n read_v the_o book_n of_o the_o psalm_n and_o see_v the_o sweetness_n of_o david_n spirit_n have_v david_n have_v the_o epistle_n of_o paul_n and_o have_v know_v all_o of_o christ_n and_o hear_v so_o much_o of_o the_o gospel_n open_v to_o he_o how_o will_v he_o have_v say_v o_o how_o sweet_a be_v thy_o law_n and_o if_o his_o heart_n be_v enlarge_v he_o can_v run_v the_o way_n of_o god_n commandment_n i_o but_o david_n he_o be_v under_o the_o burden_n of_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n for_o it_o be_v not_o that_o which_o be_v reveal_v in_o the_o gospel_n certain_o he_o have_v not_o the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o thing_n reveal_v there_o though_o he_o have_v a_o more_o than_o ordinary_a measure_n of_o knowledge_n and_o if_o he_o walk_v so_o free_o and_o cheerful_o in_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n certain_o we_o shall_v do_v much_o more_o service_n for_o the_o lord_n now_o the_o yoke_n be_v take_v from_o we_o as_o the_o ceremonial_a law_n in_o respect_n of_o charge_n we_o be_v free_v from_o a_o great_a deal_n of_o charge_n that_o they_o be_v at_o therefore_o we_o shall_v be_v more_o free_a when_o god_n require_v it_o of_o we_o and_o they_o spend_v so_o much_o time_n in_o outward_a thing_n in_o mere_a outward_a thing_n then_o shall_v we_o grudge_v god_n our_o time_n in_o spiritual_a communion_n or_o grudge_n god_n time_n in_o our_o family_n a_o quarter_n of_o a_o hour_n to_o worship_n god_n in_o our_o family_n morning_n and_o evening_n in_o the_o law_n they_o spend_v abundance_n of_o time_n in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n it_o may_v be_v you_o think_v it_o much_o to_o rise_v and_o come_v to_o hear_v the_o word_n they_o be_v fain_o to_o go_v long_a journey_n to_o worship_n at_o jerusalem_n wherever_o they_o live_v in_o the_o country_n to_o go_v to_o jerusalem_n to_o worship_n and_o yet_o their_o worship_n be_v but_o a_o external_a thing_n and_o in_o the_o great_a part_n but_o bodily_a labour_n when_o they_o go_v thus_o to_o worship_n they_o have_v not_o the_o mystery_n of_o the_o gospel_n open_v to_o they_o as_o you_o have_v to_o recompense_v your_o labour_n therefore_o i_o say_v be_v more_o abundant_a in_o the_o service_n of_o god_n we_o have_v a_o notable_a scripture_n for_o this_o in_o act_n 9_o 31._o of_o the_o state_n of_o the_o church_n when_o once_o they_o have_v ease_n and_o rest_n mark_v what_o come_v of_o it_o then_o have_v the_o church_n rest_n throughout_o all_o judea_n and_o galâ—lee_n and_o samaria_n and_o be_v edify_v and_o walk_v in_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o christ_n expect_v in_o the_o time_n of_o the_o gospel_n that_o all_o christian_n shall_v be_v fat_a and_o well_o like_n that_o they_o shall_v not_o be_v lean_a in_o their_o soul_n why_o for_o 1._o of_o christ_n so_o easy_a as_o now_o there_o be_v a_o reveal_n indeed_o of_o the_o way_n of_o the_o gospel_n to_o be_v easy_a sensual_o and_o loose_v but_o woe_n to_o those_o that_o be_v thus_o at_o ease_n but_o i_o say_v there_o be_v a_o reveal_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o the_o way_n of_o christ_n to_o be_v easy_a spiritual_o certain_o former_o many_o go_v to_o heaven_n more_o hardly_o than_o we_o not_o only_o in_o respect_n of_o suffering_n but_o in_o respect_n of_o horror_n of_o sin_n the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n there_o be_v scarce_o any_o bring_v to_o jesus_n christ_n but_o be_v bring_v with_o abundance_n of_o horror_n and_o have_v much_o of_o the_o spirit_n of_o bondage_n upon_o they_o and_o god_n do_v recompense_v they_o afterward_o abundant_o and_o we_o find_v this_o that_o it_o be_v true_a that_o many_o true_a christian_n never_o know_v so_o much_o horror_n of_o
the_o lesson_n that_o christ_n will_v have_v we_o indeed_o learn_v come_v if_o you_o will_v be_v my_o disciple_n you_o must_v deny_v yourself_o and_o take_v up_o my_o cross_n the_o word_n in_o the_o be_v nothing_o to_o do_v in_o a_o christian_n life_n but_o that_o that_o be_v external_a to_o perform_v some_o outward_a duty_n to_o come_v and_o hear_v the_o word_n and_o speak_v good_a thing_n and_o pray_v and_o make_v a_o outward_a profession_n the_o life_n of_o a_o christian_a be_v a_o great_a deal_n more_o easy_a but_o from_o this_o that_o you_o hear_v from_o the_o work_n of_o this_o one_o grace_n of_o humility_n you_o may_v see_v that_o the_o work_n of_o a_o christian_a lie_n much_o within_o door_n that_o christian_n shall_v be_v very_o busy_a within_o their_o heart_n there_o be_v many_o working_n within_o rather_o then_o without_o and_o therefore_o if_o you_o will_v profess_v yourselves_o to_o be_v christian_n and_o will_v indeed_o have_v the_o power_n of_o godliness_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o poor_a wretched_a sinner_n yea_o in_o a_o heart_n that_o be_v natural_o very_o proud_a for_o so_o we_o be_v all_o and_o be_v not_o the_o grace_n of_o christ_n very_o powerful_a in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o christian_a these_o thing_n can_v never_o be_v wherefore_o when_o you_o hear_v that_o these_o thing_n be_v in_o a_o heart_n work_v thus_o we_o may_v conclude_v sure_o the_o power_n of_o jesus_n christ_n be_v very_o mighty_a and_o very_o strong_a well_o thus_o you_o have_v the_o grace_n of_o humility_n present_v to_o you_o towards_o god_n and_o yourselves_o let_v we_o learn_v to_o be_v of_o lowly_a heart_n and_o be_v not_o at_o rest_n until_o you_o find_v these_o kind_n of_o working_n in_o your_o spirit_n chap._n cxxvi_o the_o first_o property_n of_o humility_n
