hardness_n and_o darkness_n which_o already_o possess_v they_o and_o then_o though_o god_n speak_v once_o or_o twice_o or_o a_o hundred_o time_n they_o perceive_v it_o not_o they_o that_o harden_v their_o heart_n shall_v have_v they_o harden_v by_o that_o which_o be_v the_o ordinary_a mean_n to_o soften_v and_o melt_v they_o and_o they_o that_o shut_v their_o eye_n against_o any_o truth_n be_v in_o danger_n of_o have_v they_o shut_v against_o all_o truth_n even_o by_o that_o mean_n which_o usual_o open_v eye_n thus_o we_o see_v that_o this_o first_o sort_n of_o man_n mere_a carnal_a man_n can_v see_v ot_fw-mi perceive_v when_o god_n speak_v and_o why_o it_o be_v so_o second_o which_o i_o conceive_v rather_o to_o be_v the_o meaning_n of_o elihu_n here_o man_n may_v be_v consider_v in_o his_o spiritual_a state_n that_o be_v as_o convert_v and_o renew_v in_o spirit_n by_o the_o mighty_a work_n of_o the_o spirit_n now_o to_o man_n in_o this_o estate_n god_n speak_v once_o yea_o twice_o and_o they_o perceive_v it_o not_o they_o that_o be_v spiritual_a do_v not_o always_o perceive_v spiritual_a thing_n for_o first_o they_o have_v much_o corruption_n in_o they_o though_o they_o be_v renew_v yet_o they_o be_v renew_v but_o in_o part_n we_o see_v in_o part_n and_o but_o dark_o yea_o sometime_o saint_n can_v hardly_o see_v at_o all_o especial_o as_o to_o some_o dispensation_n and_o manifestation_n of_o god_n he_o may_v speak_v once_o yea_o twice_o and_o thrice_o to_o they_o in_o such_o a_o thing_n or_o to_o such_o a_o purpose_n and_o they_o take_v little_a or_o no_o notice_n of_o it_o he_o may_v point_v unto_o they_o by_o such_o providence_n and_o by_o such_o sermon_n and_o yet_o they_o look_v upon_o themselves_o as_o un-concerned_n not_o make_v any_o home-application_n of_o what_o they_o outward_o hear_v or_o see_v yea_o feel_v and_o smart_v under_o and_o all_o this_o by_o reason_n of_o some_o prevail_a corruption_n second_o this_o may_v proceed_v from_o their_o negligence_n and_o slothfullnesse_n good_a man_n be_v not_o always_o careful_a as_o they_o shall_v much_o less_o critical_a and_o wise_o curious_a to_o observe_v every_o providence_n of_o god_n and_o to_o consider_v why_o or_o for_o what_o end_n such_o or_o such_o a_o word_n be_v send_v to_o they_o as_o carnal_a man_n thrust_v the_o word_n from_o they_o so_o godly_a man_n fail_v much_o at_o all_o time_n and_o at_o some_o time_n whole_o neglect_v to_o lay_v the_o word_n to_o heart_n they_o do_v not_o compare_v themselves_o that_o be_v their_o life_n and_o conscience_n their_o thought_n and_o way_n with_o the_o word_n and_o then_o no_o wonder_n if_o they_o perceive_v not_o what_o be_v speak_v to_o they_o even_o a_o job_n may_v be_v hinder_v by_o his_o own_o indulgence_n from_o perceive_v what_o god_n say_v unto_o he_o the_o prophet_n complain_v of_o the_o people_n of_o god_n for_o not_o strive_v to_o take_v hold_n of_o he_o isa_n 64.7_o there_o be_v none_o that_o call_v upon_o thy_o name_n that_o stir_v up_o himself_o to_o take_v hold_n on_o thou_o and_o may_v we_o not_o complain_v that_o few_o stir_v up_o themselves_o either_o to_o take_v hold_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o that_o the_o word_n may_v take_v hold_n of_o they_o paul_n exhort_v timothy_n 2_o tim._n 1.6_o to_o stir_v up_o the_o gift_n of_o god_n that_o be_v in_o he_o they_o that_o have_v receive_v both_o that_o be_v godly_a shall_v observe_v what_o be_v speak_v unto_o they_o what_o corruption_n be_v smite_v by_o the_o word_n or_o by_o the_o rod_n of_o god_n and_o as_o soon_o as_o ever_o such_o a_o word_n be_v speak_v they_o shall_v take_v it_o up_o and_o apply_v it_o to_o themselves_o three_o those_o many_o lust_n that_o be_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o godly_a man_n not_o yet_o full_o mortify_v as_o secret_a pride_n self-love_n and_o unbelief_n these_o hinder_v he_o from_o understand_v the_o mind_n of_o god_n and_o therefore_o we_o be_v counsel_v by_o the_o apostle_n james_n chap._n 1.21_o to_o lay_v aside_o that_o be_v to_o get_v subdue_v and_o mortify_v all_o filthiness_n and_o superfluity_n of_o naughtiness_n and_o so_o receive_v with_o meekness_n the_o engraft_a word_n which_o be_v able_a to_o save_v our_o soul_n as_o if_o he_o have_v say_v we_o can_v neither_o perceive_v nor_o receive_v the_o word_n save_o unless_o our_o lust_n be_v cast_v out_o and_o cast_v off_o how_o much_o any_o man_n neglect_v this_o duty_n of_o mortify_v his_o lust_n by_o so_o much_o be_v he_o render_v both_o unable_a to_o perceive_v the_o word_n and_o unfit_a to_o profit_v by_o it_o last_o mr._n broughton_n render_v the_o word_n thus_o god_n speak_v once_o yea_o twice_o and_o man_n will_v not_o mark_v it_o we_o say_v man_n perceive_v it_o not_o he_o say_v man_n will_v not_o unto_o that_o which_o be_v good_a but_o he_o have_v a_o rebellion_n in_o his_o will_n against_o that_o which_o be_v good_a and_o that_o not_o by_o some_o occasional_a disgust_n or_o sudden_a gust_n of_o passion_n but_o he_o be_v natural_o set_v and_o resolve_v against_o that_o which_o be_v good_a man_n will_v not_o mark_v what_o god_n speak_v in_o his_o word_n and_o work_n christ_n upbraid_v the_o jew_n joh._n 5.40_o you_o will_v not_o come_v unto_o i_o that_o you_o may_v have_v life_n he_o charge_v the_o fault_n upon_o their_o will_n it_o be_v certain_a man_n have_v a_o will_n not_o to_o
