adultery_n uncleanness_n riot_v drunkenness_n injustice_n murder_n theft_n oppression_n of_o the_o poor_a and_o fatherless_a earthly_a pride_n and_o ambition_n covetuousness_n a_o fond_a idolatry_n of_o this_o world_n disobedience_n to_o parent_n and_o governor_n etc._n etc._n now_o if_o these_o be_v the_o thing_n for_o which_o man_n shall_v be_v save_v or_o damn_v it_o be_v certain_a that_o man_n must_v be_v save_v or_o damn_v only_o for_o what_o they_o do_v in_o this_o life_n bad_a man_n who_o be_v fond_a of_o this_o world_n and_o of_o bodily_a pleasure_n which_o make_v they_o impatient_a of_o the_o severe_a restraint_n of_o religion_n complain_v very_o much_o of_o this_o that_o their_o eternal_a happiness_n or_o misery_n depend_v upon_o such_o a_o short_a and_o uncertain_a life_n that_o they_o must_v spend_v this_o life_n under_o the_o awe_n and_o terror_n of_o the_o next_o that_o some_o few_o momentary_a pleasure_n must_v be_v punish_v with_o endless_a misery_n and_o that_o if_o they_o out-slip_v their_o time_n of_o repentance_n if_o they_o venture_v to_o sin_n on_o too_o long_o or_o die_v a_o little_a too_o soon_o there_o be_v no_o remedy_n for_o they_o for_o ever_o but_o let_v bad_a man_n look_v to_o this_o and_o consider_v the_o folly_n of_o their_o choice_n i_o be_o sure_a how_o hard_o soever_o it_o may_v be_v think_v to_o be_v eternal_o damn_v for_o heaven_n where_o can_v this_o be_v do_v but_o on_o earth_n while_o we_o live_v in_o these_o body_n of_o flesh_n and_o be_v encompass_v with_o sensible_a object_n this_o be_v the_o time_n for_o a_o divine_a soul_n which_o aspire_v after_o immortality_n to_o raise_v itself_o above_o the_o body_n to_o conquer_v this_o present_a world_n by_o the_o belief_n and_o hope_n of_o unseen_a thing_n to_o awaken_v and_o exercise_v its_o spiritual_a power_n and_o faculty_n and_o to_o adorn_v itself_o with_o those_o grace_n and_o virtue_n which_o come_v down_o from_o heaven_n and_o by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n and_o the_o merit_n of_o our_o saviour_n will_v carry_v we_o up_o thither_o there_o be_v no_o middle_a state_n between_o live_v in_o this_o body_n and_o out_o of_o it_o and_o therefore_o whatever_o habit_n and_o disposition_n of_o mind_n be_v necessary_a to_o make_v a_o spirit_n happy_a when_o it_o go_v out_o of_o this_o body_n must_v be_v form_v and_o exercise_v while_o it_o be_v in_o it_o earth_n and_o heaven_n be_v two_o extreme_n and_o opposite_a state_n of_o life_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v impossible_a immediate_o to_o pass_v from_o one_o to_o tother_o a_o soul_n perfect_a purity_n for_o in_o all_o reason_n the_o place_n and_o state_n of_o life_n must_v be_v fit_v to_o the_o nature_n of_o thing_n and_o therefore_o a_o life_n of_o holiness_n while_o we_o live_v in_o these_o body_n be_v a_o kind_n of_o a_o middle_a state_n between_o earth_n and_o heaven_n such_o a_o man_n belong_v to_o both_o world_n he_o be_v unite_v to_o this_o world_n by_o his_o body_n lawless_a tyrant_n who_o fear_v no_o other_o power_n yet_o feel_v the_o invisible_a restraint_n of_o conscience_n and_o those_o secret_a and_o severe_a rebuke_n which_o make_v they_o tremble_v nay_o whipping-post_n yet_o dare_v not_o venture_v lake_n of_o fire_n and_o brimstone_n the_o worm_n that_o never_o die_v and_o the_o fire_n that_o never_o go_v out_o thus_o on_o the_o other_o hand_n how_o much_o be_v it_o for_o the_o present_a happiness_n of_o the_o world_n that_o man_n shall_v live_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o those_o christian_a grace_n and_o virtue_n which_o no_o humane_a law_n command_v and_o the_o neglect_n of_o which_o no_o humane_a law_n will_v punish_v as_o to_o instance_n only_o in_o the_o love_n of_o enemy_n and_o forgiveness_n of_o injury_n and_o such_o a_o body_n or_o they_o can_v never_o have_v make_v god_n of_o they_o nay_o there_o be_v such_o a_o strong_a sense_n of_o immortality_n imprint_v on_o our_o nature_n that_o very_o few_o man_n how_o much_o soever_o they_o have_v debauch_v their_o natural_a sentiment_n can_v whole_o deliver_v themselves_o from_o the_o fear_n of_o another_o world._n but_o we_o have_v a_o more_o sure_a word_n of_o prophecy_n than_o this_o since_o life_n and_o immortality_n be_v now_o bring_v to_o light_v by_o the_o gospel_n for_o this_o be_v so_o plain_o teach_v in_o scripture_n that_o no_o man_n who_o believe_v that_o needs_o any_o other_o proof_n my_o business_n therefore_o only_o shall_v be_v to_o show_v you_o how_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o shall_v affect_v our_o mind_n what_o that_o know_v no_o more_o what_o to_o make_v of_o they_o than_o of_o ghost_n and_o spirit_n they_o account_v they_o thin_a vanish_v thing_n and_o wonder_v what_o man_n mean_v who_o talk_n so_o much_o of_o they_o nay_o good_a man_n themselves_o be_v apt_a to_o be_v too_o much_o please_v with_o this_o world_n while_o they_o be_v easy_a here_o something_o else_o be_v necessary_a to_o wean_v they_o from_o it_o and_o to_o cure_v their_o fondness_n of_o it_o beside_o the_o thought_n of_o die_a which_o make_v the_o suffering_n and_o affliction_n and_o disappointment_n of_o this_o life_n so_o necessary_a for_o the_o best_a of_o men._n this_o be_v one_o thing_n which_o make_v the_o thought_n of_o death_n so_o terrible_a man_n think_v themselves_o very_o well_o as_o they_o be_v and_o most_o man_n think_v that_o they_o can_v be_v better_a and_o therefore_o very_a few_o be_v desirous_a of_o a_o change_n extreme_a misery_n may_v conquer_v the_o love_n of_o life_n and_o some_o few_o divine_a soul_n may_v long_o with_o st._n paul_n to_o be_v dissolve_v and_o to_o be_v with_o christ_n which_o be_v best_a of_o all_o but_o this_o world_n be_v a_o belove_a place_n to_o the_o generality_n of_o mankind_n and_o that_o make_v it_o a_o very_a troublesome_a thing_n to_o leave_v it_o whereas_o do_v we_o right_o consider_v this_o matter_n it_o will_v rectify_v our_o mistake_n about_o these_o necessary_a to_o this_o present_a state_n of_o life_n while_o we_o live_v here_o we_o want_v they_o but_o when_o we_o leave_v this_o world_n we_o must_v live_v without_o they_o and_o may_v be_v happy_a without_o they_o too_o there_o be_v a_o great_a agreeableness_n between_o the_o thing_n of_o this_o world_n and_o a_o earthly_a nature_n they_o be_v a_o great_a support_n and_o comfort_n to_o we_o in_o this_o mortal_a state_n and_o therefore_o while_o we_o live_v in_o this_o world_n we_o may_v value_v the_o enjoyment_n of_o it_o for_o the_o ease_n and_o conveniency_n of_o life_n but_o we_o must_v neither_o call_v this_o life_n nor_o any_o enjoyment_n of_o it_o our_o own_o because_o they_o be_v short_a and_o perish_a we_o be_v here_o but_o as_o traveller_n in_o a_o inn_n it_o be_v not_o our_o home_n and_o country_n it_o be_v not_o our_o portion_n and_o inheritance_n but_o a_o movable_a and_o changeable_a scene_n which_o be_v entertain_v at_o present_a but_o can_v last_v let_v we_o then_o consider_v how_o we_o ought_v to_o value_v such_o thing_n as_o these_o and_o to_o make_v it_o as_o plain_a and_o self-evident_a as_o i_o can_v i_o shall_v put_v some_o easy_a and_o familiar_a which_o i_o believe_v the_o rich_a and_o happy_a people_n who_o be_v so_o fond_a of_o long_a life_n will_v not_o like_v very_o well_o this_o will_v utter_o undo_v our_o young_a prodigal_a heir_n be_v their_o hope_n of_o succession_n three_o or_o four_o hundred_o

and_o future_a hope_n of_o the_o new_a world._n and_o when_o god_n have_v determine_v in_o himself_o and_o promise_v to_o noah_n never_o to_o destroy_v the_o world_n again_o by_o such_o a_o universal_a destruction_n till_o the_o last_o and_o final_a judgement_n it_o be_v necessary_a by_o degree_n to_o shorten_v the_o life_n of_o man_n which_o be_v the_o most_o effectual_a mean_n to_o make_v they_o more_o governable_a and_o to_o remove_v bad_a example_n out_o of_o the_o world_n which_o will_v hinder_v the_o spread_a of_o the_o infection_n and_o people_n and_o reform_v the_o world_n again_o by_o new_a example_n of_o piety_n and_o virtue_n for_o when_o there_o be_v such_o quick_a succession_n of_o man_n there_o be_v few_o age_n but_o have_v some_o great_a and_o brave_a example_n which_o give_v a_o new_a and_o better_a spirit_n to_o the_o world._n many_o other_o thing_n may_v be_v add_v to_o convince_v those_o who_o complain_v of_o the_o shortness_n of_o humane_a life_n that_o it_o will_v be_v no_o desirable_a thing_n as_o the_o state_n of_o the_o world_n now_o be_v to_o live_v seven_o or_o eight_o hundred_o year_n in_o it_o but_o this_o i_o suppose_v be_v enough_o if_o i_o sense_n will_v never_o be_v satisfy_v that_o threescore_o and_o ten_o year_n be_v as_o good_a as_o eight_o or_o nine_o hundred_o for_o this_o purpose_n for_o the_o long_o they_o enjoy_v these_o pleasure_n and_o the_o often_o they_o repeat_v they_o the_o better_a it_o be_v but_o these_o man_n ought_v to_o be_v convince_v that_o this_o be_v not_o the_o true_a end_n of_o live_v that_o these_o be_v only_a mean_n to_o preserve_v life_n which_o god_n have_v sweeten_v with_o such_o proper_a satisfaction_n or_o make_v the_o neglect_n of_o they_o so_o uneasy_a and_o painful_a that_o no_o man_n enough_o to_o do_v this_o we_o live_v long_o enough_o and_o aught_o to_o thank_v god_n that_o our_o work_n and_o labour_n and_o temptation_n be_v at_o a_o end_n for_o what_o labour_v man_n be_v not_o glad_a that_o his_o work_n be_v over_o and_o he_o may_v go_v to_o rest_n what_o mariner_n be_v not_o glad_a that_o he_o have_v weather_v all_o storm_n and_o steer_v a_o safe_a course_n to_o his_o to_o satisfy_v that_o appetite_n in_o great_a and_o genorous_a mind_n in_o this_o blind_a and_o obscure_a state_n of_o life_n but_o the_o comfort_n be_v all_o the_o knowledge_n that_o be_v necessary_a to_o carry_v we_o to_o heaven_n be_v now_o plain_a and_o easy_a and_o will_v not_o take_v up_o many_o year_n to_o learn_v it_o for_o this_o be_v life_n eternal_a to_o know_v god_n and_o jesus_n good_a i_o confess_v the_o long_o a_o good_a man_n live_v the_o more_o good_a he_o will_v do_v and_o make_v himself_o the_o more_o useful_a to_o the_o world_n but_o this_o be_v god_n care_n and_o whenever_o he_o call_v he_o out_o of_o the_o world_n he_o excuse_v he_o from_o do_v any_o more_o good_a in_o it_o the_o truth_n be_v nothing_o can_v be_v more_o improper_a under_o the_o state_n of_o make_v it_o as_o easy_a to_o we_o to_o leave_v this_o world_n for_o heaven_n as_o it_o be_v to_o remove_v into_o a_o more_o pleasant_a and_o wholesome_a air_n or_o into_o a_o more_o convenient_a and_o beautiful_a house_n so_o easy_a so_o pleasant_a will_v it_o be_v to_o die_v with_o such_o thought_n as_o these_o about_o we_o this_o indeed_o ought_v to_o be_v the_o constant_a exercise_n of_o the_o christian_a life_n it_o be_v fit_a for_o all_o time_n and_o for_o all_o person_n and_o without_o some_o degree_n of_o it_o it_o be_v impossible_a to_o conquer_v the_o temptation_n of_o the_o world_n or_o to_o live_v in_o the_o practice_n of_o divine_a and_o heavenly_a virtue_n but_o this_o aught_o to_o be_v the_o constant_a business_n or_o entertainment_n rather_o of_o those_o happy_a man_n who_o have_v live_v long_o enough_o in_o the_o world_n to_o take_v a_o fair_a leave_n of_o it_o who_o have_v run_v through_o all_o the_o scene_n and_o stage_n of_o humane_a life_n and_o have_v now_o death_n and_o another_o world_n in_o view_n and_o prospect_n and_o it_o be_v this_o make_v a_o retirement_n from_o the_o world_n so_o necessary_a or_o very_a useful_a not_o mere_o to_o ease_v our_o bodily_a labour_n and_o to_o get_v a_o little_a rest_n from_o business_n to_o dissolve_v in_o sloth_n and_o idleness_n or_o to_o wander_v about_o to_o seek_v a_o companion_n or_o to_o hear_v news_n or_o to_o talk_v politic_n or_o to_o find_v out_o some_o way_n to_o spend_v time_n which_o now_o lie_v upon_o their_o hand_n and_o be_v more_o uneasy_a and_o troublesome_a to_o they_o than_o business_n be_v this_o be_v a_o more_o dangerous_a state_n and_o do_v more_o indispose_v they_o for_o a_o happy_a death_n than_o all_o the_o care_n and_o trouble_n of_o a_o active_a life_n but_o we_o must_v retire_v in_o a_o crowd_n of_o customer_n or_o client_n and_o be_v hurry_v from_o their_o shop_n to_o the_o exchange_n or_o custom-house_n or_o from_o their_o chamber_n to_o the_o bar_n and_o when_o they_o have_v discharge_v one_o obligation_n be_v press_v hard_o by_o another_o that_o at_o night_n they_o have_v hardly_o spirit_n leave_v to_o say_v their_o prayer_n nor_o any_o time_n for_o they_o in_o the_o morning_n and_o the_o lord_n day_n itself_o be_v think_v more_o proper_a for_o rest_n and_o refreshment_n than_o devotion_n i_o say_v what_o dull_a cold_a apprehension_n must_v such_o man_n have_v of_o another_o world_n and_o after_o all_o the_o care_n we_o can_v take_v how_o will_v this_o world_n insinuate_v itself_o into_o our_o affection_n when_o it_o employ_v our_o time_n and_o thought_n when_o our_o whole_a business_n be_v buy_v and_o sell_v and_o drive_v good_a bargain_n and_o make_v conveyance_n and_o settlement_n of_o estate_n how_o will_v this_o disorder_v our_o passion_n occasion_n feud_n and_o quarrel_n give_v we_o a_o tincture_n of_o pride_n ambition_n covetuousness_n that_o there_o be_v work_n enough_o after_o a_o busy_a life_n even_o for_o very_o good_a man_n to_o wash_v out_o these_o stain_n and_o pollution_n and_o to_o get_v the_o taste_n and_o relish_v of_o this_o world_n out_o of_o their_o mouth_n and_o to_o revive_v and_o quicken_v the_o sense_n of_o god_n and_o of_o another_o world._n this_o be_v a_o sufficient_a reason_n for_o such_o man_n as_o i_o observe_v before_o to_o think_v when_o it_o be_v time_n to_o leave_v off_o and_o if_o not_o whole_o to_o withdraw_v from_o the_o world_n yet_o to_o contract_v their_o business_n and_o to_o have_v the_o command_n of_o it_o that_o they_o may_v have_v more_o leisure_n to_o take_v care_n of_o their_o soul_n before_o they_o have_v so_o near_o a_o call_n and_o
heaven_n nothing_o but_o the_o hope_n and_o fear_n of_o the_o next_o world_n can_v enforce_v these_o duty_n on_o we_o and_o this_o justify_v the_o wisdom_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n in_o make_v repentance_n than_o mere_a die_a sorrow_n 3._o let_v we_o now_o consider_v the_o case_n of_o those_o who_o be_v doubtful_a what_o their_o condition_n be_v who_o be_v neither_o so_o good_a as_o to_o be_v out_o of_o all_o danger_n and_o fear_n nor_o so_o bad_a as_o to_o be_v out_o of_o hope_n and_o i_o need_v not_o tell_v any_o man_n that_o this_o be_v a_o state_n between_o hope_n and_o fear_v which_o be_v a_o very_a uneasy_a state_n when_o eternal_a happiness_n or_o misery_n be_v the_o matter_n of_o the_o doubt_n this_o be_v the_o case_n of_o those_o man_n who_o after_o all_o their_o good_a resolution_n be_v ever_o and_o anon_o conquer_v by_o temptation_n who_o as_o soon_o as_o their_o tear_n be_v dry_v up_o for_o their_o last_o fall_n fall_v again_o and_o then_o lament_v their_o sin_n and_o resolve_v again_o and_o while_o they_o be_v thus_o interchangeable_o sin_v repent_v and_o resolve_v before_o they_o have_v get_v a_o last_a victory_n or_o be_v arrive_v to_o a_o steady_a virtue_n be_v summon_v by_o death_n to_o judgement_n or_o those_o who_o have_v a_o reverence_n for_o god_n but_o be_v not_o so_o constant_a and_o frequent_a in_o their_o devotion_n or_o if_o they_o abstain_v from_o gross_a and_o scandalous_a vice_n yet_o they_o have_v not_o a_o due_a government_n of_o their_o passion_n or_o do_v very_o little_a good_a in_o the_o world_n etc._n etc._n here_o be_v such_o a_o mixture_n of_o good_a and_o evil_a that_o it_o be_v hard_o to_o know_v which_o be_v predominant_a while_o such_o man_n be_v in_o health_n they_o be_v very_o uneasy_a and_o know_v not_o what_o to_o judge_v of_o themselves_o but_o they_o fall_v into_o much_o great_a perplexity_n when_o they_o be_v alarm_v with_o the_o near_a approach_n of_o death_n and_o judgement_n and_o what_o a_o deplorable_a state_n be_v this_o when_o we_o be_v a_o die_a to_o be_v uncertain_a and_o anxious_a what_o will_v become_v of_o we_o to_o eternity_n now_o there_o be_v no_o possible_a way_n to_o prevent_v these_o fear_n when_o we_o come_v to_o die_v but_o by_o give_v all_o diligence_n to_o make_v our_o call_v and_o election_n sure_a by_o live_v such_o holy_a and_o innocent_a life_n that_o our_o conscience_n may_v not_o condemn_v we_o and_o then_o we_o shall_v have_v confidence_n towards_o god._n 21._o but_o this_o be_v such_o a_o remedy_n as_o few_o of_o these_o man_n like_o they_o will_v be_v glad_a to_o be_v sure_a of_o heaven_n but_o yet_o will_v go_v as_o near_a hell_n as_o they_o can_v without_o danger_n of_o fall_v into_o it_o they_o will_v serve_v god_n but_o must_v reserve_v a_o little_a favour_n and_o indulgence_n to_o their_o lust_n though_o they_o dare_v not_o take_v full_a draught_n of_o sensual_a pleasure_n yet_o they_o must_v be_v sip_v now_o and_o then_o as_o often_o as_o they_o can_v pacify_v their_o conscience_n and_o get_v rid_v of_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o of_o another_o world_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v very_o inquisitive_a after_o other_o cure_n for_o a_o accuse_v and_o condemn_v conscience_n be_v mighty_a fond_a of_o such_o mark_n and_o sign_n of_o grace_n as_o will_v secure_v they_o of_o heaven_n without_o the_o severity_n of_o mortification_n
