be_v not_o on_o the_o other_o side_n to_o be_v take_v and_o count_v as_o nothing_o i_o mean_v both_o his_o act_n and_o the_o report_n of_o it_o by_o the_o holy_a story_n for_o though_o they_o do_v not_o preach_v to_o the_o people_n in_o the_o city_n whither_o they_o come_v have_v levites_n with_o they_o to_o do_v that_o service_n yet_o their_o countenance_v authorise_a and_o back_v of_o the_o on_o by_o such_o worthy_a example_n oh_o we_o know_v what_o force_n there_o be_v in_o such_o mean_n in_o so_o much_o as_o even_o with_o we_o howsoever_o there_o be_v of_o the_o nobility_n many_o who_o have_v the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n in_o singular_a account_n yet_o the_o people_n that_o dwell_v far_o off_o from_o they_o and_o be_v not_o seat_v near_o to_o they_o they_o i_o say_v harken_v not_o after_o they_o neither_o be_v any_o thing_n move_v by_o they_o but_o where_o such_o be_v see_v by_o the_o people_n that_o live_v by_o they_o to_o have_v the_o preacher_n of_o the_o word_n in_o high_a account_n for_o the_o message_n they_o bring_v and_o to_o be_v subject_a to_o the_o holy_a doctrine_n which_o they_o teach_v even_o that_o be_v a_o strong_a cord_n to_o draw_v the_o inferior_a sort_n to_o show_v reverence_n to_o the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o to_o cause_v they_o to_o think_v that_o if_o such_o great_a person_n so_o high_o esteem_v of_o their_o ministry_n and_o message_n that_o there_o be_v doubtless_o some_o great_a matter_n that_o move_v they_o to_o it_o and_o though_o that_o be_v not_o all_o neither_o be_v of_o any_o power_n to_o convert_v the_o heart_n for_o that_o be_v the_o proper_a work_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n yet_o many_o be_v at_o the_o first_o bring_v on_o to_o receive_v the_o preach_n of_o the_o gospel_n who_o after_o feel_v the_o power_n of_o it_o also_o and_o enjoy_v the_o benefit_n of_o it_o when_o yet_o their_o first_o beginning_n therein_o be_v chief_o occasion_v by_o the_o zeal_n and_o forwardness_n of_o such_o good_a pattern_n and_o so_o vex_v cast_v down_o and_o disquiet_v in_o he_o that_o he_o can_v not_o raise_v it_o up_o to_o any_o joy_n and_o comfort_n so_o it_o be_v with_o the_o best_a at_o sometime_o further_o observe_v who_o he_o here_o exhort_v thus_o often_o to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n and_o that_o be_v the_o faithful_a that_o already_o have_v this_o joy_n begin_v in_o their_o heart_n these_o man_n that_o already_o do_v rejoice_v they_o must_v rejoice_v and_o again_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n it_o be_v not_o for_o a_o righteous_a man_n to_o begin_v a_o good_a thing_n but_o he_o must_v labour_v to_o perfect_a and_o increase_v it_o to_o the_o end_n of_o his_o life_n 5.13_o mark_v a_o notable_a place_n to_o this_o purpose_n 1._o joh._n 5.13_o these_o thing_n have_v i_o write_v unto_o you_o that_o believe_v in_o the_o name_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n that_o you_o may_v know_v that_o you_o have_v eternal_a life_n and_o that_o you_o may_v believe_v in_o the_o son_n of_o god_n he_o write_v to_o they_o that_o believe_v that_o they_o may_v believe_v and_o in_o the_o first_o chapter_n and_o four_o verse_n he_o write_v these_o thing_n to_o they_o that_o rejoice_v already_o 1.3_o that_o their_o joy_n which_o be_v begin_v may_v be_v full_a so_o thus_o our_o apostle_n in_o this_o place_n write_v to_o they_o that_o already_o rejoice_v that_o they_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n to_o they_o that_o rejoice_v in_o part_n and_o in_o some_o measure_n that_o their_o joy_n may_v be_v full_a duty_n here_o than_o we_o see_v first_o what_o be_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o minister_n and_o that_o be_v that_o he_o content_v not_o himself_o to_o have_v lay_v a_o good_a foundation_n of_o say_v in_o his_o people_n and_o of_o joy_n and_o hope_n and_o such_o other_o good_a virtue_n but_o he_o be_v to_o build_v they_o up_o that_o they_o may_v grow_v from_o faith_n to_o faith_n from_o hope_n to_o hope_n and_o from_o joy_n to_o joy_n even_o so_o long_o as_o these_o or_o they_o may_v grow_v which_o be_v as_o long_o as_o man_n live_v in_o this_o world_n it_o be_v the_o minister_n duty_n to_o continue_v his_o exhortation_n unto_o they_o it_o be_v not_o for_o he_o to_o say_v as_o many_o reckless_a and_o godless_a minister_n i_o have_v teach_v they_o more_o than_o they_o have_v learn_v already_o when_o they_o have_v learn_v that_o i_o will_v teach_v they_o more_o no_o thou_o must_v teach_v and_o exhort_v they_o the_o same_o duty_n again_o and_o again_o and_o never_o give_v over_o exhortation_n till_o thou_o have_v by_o the_o mercy_n of_o god_n even_o fill_v they_o with_o joy_n and_o faith_n and_o patience_n and_o with_o all_o we_o see_v the_o duty_n of_o the_o people_n people_n it_o be_v not_o enough_o for_o they_o to_o say_v they_o believe_v already_o they_o need_v not_o more_o preach_v to_o exhort_v they_o to_o believe_v and_o they_o rejoice_v in_o god_n already_o and_o therefore_o need_v not_o to_o be_v exhort_v to_o this_o joy_n but_o rather_o it_o be_v mere_a and_o necessary_a for_o they_o to_o have_v with_o the_o father_n of_o the_o possess_a child_n mark_n 9.24_o at_o least_o one_o eye_n upon_o their_o infidelity_n as_o well_o as_o the_o other_o upon_o their_o faith_n and_o to_o say_v i_o believe_v lord_n help_v my_o unbelief_n believe_v thou_o well_o yet_o thou_o have_v remain_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o unbelief_n do_v thou_o rejoice_v yet_o remember_v thou_o have_v need_v again_o and_o often_o to_o be_v exhort_v to_o this_o duty_n that_o thy_o small_a joy_n may_v grow_v in_o the_o end_n to_o be_v full_a and_o complete_a that_o even_o thou_o may_v with_o and_o the_o difficulty_n of_o perform_v this_o duty_n be_v such_o as_o i_o have_v in_o some_o sort_n show_v i_o think_v it_o not_o amiss_o to_o spend_v a_o little_a time_n in_o teach_v how_o a_o man_n may_v both_o procure_v this_o joy_n if_o yet_o he_o never_o have_v it_o and_o keep_v and_o increase_v it_o if_o he_o have_v it_o and_o recover_v it_o if_o at_o any_o time_n he_o have_v lose_v the_o sense_n and_o feel_n of_o it_o object_n 1_o for_o the_o objection_n these_o be_v some_o why_o christian_n can_v always_o rejoice_v to_o wit_n see_v many_o of_o they_o be_v usual_o heavy_a and_o sad_a yea_o so_o far_o that_o they_o cause_v other_o to_o be_v so_o and_o they_o make_v many_o to_o think_v that_o their_o religion_n allow_v no_o joy_n which_o hold_v some_o back_n from_o it_o and_o therefore_o such_o be_v far_o from_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n always_o answ_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v that_o example_n be_v not_o to_o be_v allege_v against_o rule_n for_o such_o as_o be_v sad_a of_o god_n child_n have_v not_o yet_o learned_a to_o know_v their_o liberty_n that_o they_o may_v rejoice_v as_o i_o have_v say_v but_o will_v most_o willing_o and_o shall_v in_o time_n do_v so_o but_o in_o the_o mean_a while_n be_v to_o be_v pity_v and_o help_v forward_o and_o therefore_o these_o hinder_v not_o the_o truth_n before_o mention_v that_o the_o righteous_a can_v rejoice_v object_n 2_o again_o it_o be_v object_v that_o some_o who_o do_v rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n have_v leave_v and_o give_v it_o over_o and_o take_v up_o their_o joy_n in_o other_o thing_n as_o though_o either_o their_o heavenly_a joy_n can_v not_o be_v hold_v and_o as_o though_o they_o have_v do_v more_o than_o they_o can_v defend_v answ_n to_o the_o which_o i_o say_v that_o either_o they_o have_v no_o good_a ground_n nor_o warrant_n to_o rejoice_v so_o at_o first_o or_o if_o they_o have_v they_o sin_n in_o leave_v it_o off_o and_o must_v return_v to_o it_o again_o object_n 3_o other_o say_v they_o can_v rejoice_v as_o they_o do_v when_o they_o be_v first_o enlighten_v answer_n to_o believe_v to_o who_o i_o say_v that_o either_o they_o labour_v not_o to_o preserve_v it_o so_o careful_o nor_o their_o faith_n from_o which_o it_o come_v 15.13_o neither_o prize_v they_o both_o as_o they_o do_v when_o they_o first_o believe_v or_o if_o they_o do_v than_o they_o may_v still_o rejoice_v as_o they_o do_v at_o the_o first_o if_o otherwise_o then_o what_o marvel_n be_v it_o that_o they_o can_v rejoice_v as_o sometime_o they_o do_v let_v they_o repent_v their_o negligence_n and_o sin_n and_o do_v their_o former_a work_n and_o god_n will_v restore_v their_o joy_n to_o they_o yea_o and_o that_o rather_o more_o sound_o which_o they_o be_v wont_n in_o he_o to_o find_v object_n 4_o and_o where_o it_o be_v demand_v how_o can_v they_o rejoice_v in_o tribulation_n 5.5_o answ_n i_o say_v with_o the_o apostle_n they_o may_v through_o hope_n for_o though_o no_o affliction_n be_v for_o the_o daniel_n be_v enable_v to_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lion_n den_n the_o three_o child_n in_o the_o fiery_a furnace_n and_o the_o martyr_n in_o our_o remembrance_n do_v at_o the_o stake_n object_n 5_o as_o for_o such_o as_o ask_v at_o the_o hear_n of_o this_o why_o may_v not_o any_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n as_o well_o as_o these_o before_o speak_v of_o answ_n i_o answer_v see_v they_o have_v set_v their_o delight_n in_o other_o thing_n transitory_a or_o evil_a for_o as_o the_o prophet_n advise_v the_o rich_a may_v not_o rejoice_v in_o their_o riches_n nor_o the_o wise_a in_o their_o wisdom_n but_o he_o that_o will_v rejoice_v let_v he_o rejoice_v in_o the_o lord_n for_o no_o one_o of_o those_o reioycing_n can_v stand_v with_o this_o thus_o much_o for_o answer_v to_o the_o objection_n the_o other_o thing_n be_v how_o this_o joy_v in_o the_o lord_n be_v to_o
be_v get_v keep_v and_o recover_v be_v lose_v which_o that_o you_o may_v the_o better_a regard_n and_o diligent_o attend_v unto_o know_v this_o of_o a_o surety_n that_o he_o that_o be_v not_o in_o some_o measure_n partaker_n of_o this_o joy_n here_o heaven_n shall_v never_o be_v partaker_n of_o the_o joy_n in_o heaven_n for_o as_o our_o spiritual_a life_n whereby_o we_o live_v in_o christ_n be_v not_o begin_v but_o in_o this_o life_n so_o certain_a and_o doubtless_o it_o be_v that_o this_o joy_n which_o be_v a_o fruit_n of_o that_o life_n must_v either_o be_v begin_v here_o or_o we_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n write_v in_o the_o law_n to_o do_v they_o and_o then_o not_o to_o bless_v ourselves_o that_o yet_o all_o shall_v be_v well_o nor_o to_o make_v a_o league_n and_o where_o very_o comfortable_a and_o plentiful_a in_o scripture_n joh._n 3.14_o 3.14_o as_o the_o serpent_n be_v lift_v up_o in_o the_o wilderness_n so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o that_o whosoever_o believe_v shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v eternal_a life_n for_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n that_o he_o send_v his_o only_o beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o so_o unspeakable_a love_n and_o mercy_n of_o god_n unto_o we_o if_o only_o we_o be_v free_v from_o the_o curse_n of_o the_o law_n which_o be_v eternal_a death_n and_o torment_n and_o have_v only_o this_o hatred_n of_o god_n turn_v from_o we_o that_o he_o shall_v no_o more_o hate_v we_o this_o be_v cause_n enough_o one_o will_v think_v if_o we_o do_v due_o consider_v it_o of_o great_a rejoice_v but_o true_o to_o believe_v that_o god_n shall_v further_o love_v we_o and_o love_v we_o as_o it_o be_v above_o his_o own_o son_n that_o he_o shall_v wound_v he_o to_o spare_v we_o and_o curse_v he_o to_o bless_v we_o that_o he_o shall_v kill_v he_o to_o quicken_v we_o that_o he_o shall_v abandon_v and_o forsake_v he_o that_o he_o may_v again_o take_v and_o receive_v we_o this_o i_o say_v to_o believe_v it_o can_v but_o cheer_v and_o rejoice_v the_o sad_a heart_n and_o heavy_a soul_n that_o ever_o be_v it_o be_v say_v in_o the_o act_n 2.42_o all_o that_o believe_v continue_v in_o the_o apostle_n doctrine_n and_o eat_v their_o meat_n with_o gladness_n and_o singleness_n of_o heart_n this_o faith_n make_v they_o all_o though_o they_o be_v in_o a_o most_o dangerous_a estate_n in_o regard_n of_o the_o world_n and_o the_o enemy_n they_o have_v in_o it_o to_o rejoice_v and_o be_v merry_a in_o the_o lord_n notwithstanding_o all_o the_o snare_n and_o danger_n that_o infest_a they_o on_o every_o side_n and_o the_o apostle_n peter_n write_v to_o all_o the_o disperse_a believer_n of_o the_o jew_n in_o many_o country_n in_o his_o 1._o epistle_n 1.8_o say_v you_o believe_v in_o he_o that_o be_v in_o christ_n though_o you_o see_v he_o not_o you_o rejoice_v with_o joy_n unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a though_o christ_n be_v absent_a in_o body_n yet_o this_o faith_n of_o they_o in_o he_o make_v they_o all_o to_o rejoice_v with_o unspeakable_a and_o glorious_a joy_n as_o the_o people_n of_o samaria_n do_v after_o they_o believe_v in_o christ_n thus_o than_o we_o see_v brief_o what_o be_v the_o only_a way_n to_o attain_v and_o come_v unto_o this_o joy_n here_o in_o this_o exhortation_n of_o the_o apostle_n commend_v unto_o us._n but_o i_o have_v both_o in_o a_o direction_n make_v they_o true_o happy_a for_o ever_o christian_n and_o gentle_a reader_n i_o offer_v to_o thy_o view_n in_o this_o little_a book_n certain_a sermon_n tend_v to_o the_o good_a of_o all_o that_o can_v find_v time_n and_o willingness_n to_o read_v and_o regard_v they_o and_o more_o particular_o at_o this_o they_o aim_v some_o of_o they_o that_o they_o may_v help_v forward_o and_o persuade_v ignorant_a profane_a bad_a person_n and_o hypocrite_n to_o distaste_n and_o wax_n weary_a of_o their_o evil_a and_o dangerous_a course_n for_o out_o of_o all_o these_o kind_n of_o wicked_a person_n do_v the_o lord_n daily_o call_v home_o some_o effectual_o where_o the_o gospel_n be_v sound_o plain_o and_o powerful_o preach_v and_o i_o will_v they_o shall_v know_v as_o much_o as_o i_o say_v to_o the_o end_n they_o may_v not_o harden_v their_o heart_n against_o god_n as_o they_o may_v possible_o and_o easy_o do_v while_o they_o see_v many_o safe_o and_o happy_o guide_v in_o their_o life_n and_o themselves_o nothing_o so_o but_o may_v hear_v his_o voice_n willing_o by_o repair_v to_o such_o wholesome_a sermon_n wherein_o the_o lord_n show_v himself_o willing_a to_o be_v reconcile_v unto_o they_o and_o wherein_o he_o thus_o speak_v o_o nation_n not_o worthy_a to_o be_v belove_v yet_o for_o all_o this_o if_o thou_o will_v return_v from_o thy_o iniquity_n i_o will_v receive_v thou_o gracious_o and_o what_o shall_v make_v they_o like_o glad_a as_o the_o hear_n of_o this_o as_o the_o gentile_n be_v when_o they_o hear_v first_o that_o god_n have_v grant_v unto_o they_o as_o well_o as_o to_o the_o jew_n the_o glad_a tiding_n of_o salvation_n even_o this_o sort_n of_o people_n may_v have_v no_o small_a encouragement_n by_o read_v these_o sermon_n and_o especial_o those_o among_o the_o rest_n which_o show_v how_o they_o that_o wander_v out_o of_o the_o right_a way_n may_v return_v and_o come_v home_o unto_o it_o again_o some_o of_o these_o sermon_n do_v aim_v at_o this_o to_o keep_v such_o as_o be_v draw_v out_o of_o their_o sinful_a course_n already_o to_o the_o certainty_n of_o salvation_n and_o to_o keep_v such_o steadfast_a in_o their_o faith_n hope_n and_o repentance_n and_o that_o they_o may_v not_o fall_v from_o they_o and_o other_o some_o of_o they_o serve_v to_o help_v forward_o all_o such_o so_o establish_v that_o they_o may_v grow_v in_o knowledge_n and_o grace_n and_o so_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n beseem_v the_o gospel_n and_o i_o will_v they_o may_v find_v no_o less_o favour_n and_o acceptation_n with_o the_o reader_n than_o i_o be_o sure_a they_o find_v with_o they_o who_o hear_v they_o preach_v i_o have_v show_v what_o the_o matter_n be_v that_o be_v handle_v in_o these_o sermon_n now_o i_o will_v show_v my_o reason_n why_o i_o have_v gather_v not_o one_o but_o sundry_a of_o the_o same_o argument_n together_o and_o set_v they_o forth_o so_o and_o after_o i_o will_v declare_v to_o thou_o in_o what_o order_n i_o place_v they_o in_o this_o treatise_n and_o why_o the_o first_o reason_n why_o i_o set_v down_o many_o in_o one_o book_n of_o the_o same_o argument_n and_o not_o of_o diverse_a be_v this_o for_o that_o this_o matter_n and_o doctrine_n of_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v very_o hard_a to_o be_v perceive_v and_o discern_v of_o many_o hearer_n and_o especial_o so_o as_o they_o may_v clear_o see_v how_o to_o trace_v the_o way_n and_o go_v in_o it_o therefore_o that_o which_o can_v not_o so_o easy_o be_v perceive_v in_o one_o sermon_n i_o have_v think_v good_a to_o lay_v forth_o in_o many_o and_o out_o of_o diverse_a text_n of_o scripture_n which_o tend_v all_o to_o this_o end_n to_o wit_n to_o set_v down_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n to_o god_n do_v give_v more_o light_n in_o this_o matter_n and_o offer_v occasion_n of_o more_o thing_n about_o it_o than_o one_o alone_o can_v do_v these_o therefore_o be_v read_v with_o consideration_n may_v through_o god_n blessing_n make_v this_o point_n clear_a who_o how_o and_o when_o a_o man_n be_v convert_v and_o make_v he_o able_a to_o try_v whither_o he_o himself_o be_v so_o or_o no._n and_o if_o one_o be_v well_o ground_v in_o the_o doctrine_n that_o teach_v this_o and_o have_v the_o use_n of_o this_o he_o shall_v much_o the_o easy_o attain_v to_o further_a knowledge_n and_o consequent_o to_o the_o use_n thereof_o both_o which_o be_v mean_o and_o of_o few_o attain_v to_o see_v so_o few_o be_v well_o settle_v in_o the_o other_o the_o next_o reason_n of_o this_o my_o thus_o do_v be_v because_o this_o doctrine_n of_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n be_v but_o little_a and_o too_o seldom_o teach_v i_o mean_v all_o the_o part_n of_o it_o be_v seldom_o set_v down_o together_o especial_o at_o one_o time_n and_o in_o one_o sermon_n all_o which_o be_v meet_v to_o be_v do_v and_o oft_o the_o weak_a capacity_n slippery_a memory_n and_o many_o other_o defect_n in_o the_o most_o hearer_n require_v it_o and_o that_o they_o may_v see_v both_o how_o far_o they_o be_v from_o conversion_n while_o they_o be_v in_o their_o first_o condition_n of_o ignorance_n and_o unbelief_n and_o how_o they_o be_v to_o be_v bring_v to_o it_o and_o also_o how_o contrary_a their_o heart_n and_o life_n shall_v be_v to_o that_o they_o be_v before_o when_o they_o be_v convert_v these_o part_n of_o it_o be_v seldom_o handle_v altogether_o in_o preach_v though_o one_o sometime_o another_o of_o they_o another_o time_n be_v teach_v and_o deliver_v but_o it_o be_v a_o long_a time_n though_o the_o word_n be_v diligent_o preach_v as_o in_o few_o place_n it_o be_v before_o the_o most_o part_n of_o the_o hearer_n be_v able_a to_o lay_v one_o part_n and_o point_n of_o it_o with_o the_o other_o and_o to_o make_v the_o whole_a work_n of_o conversion_n of_o they_o all_o and_o to_o add_v the_o three_o reason_n see_v all_o that_o the_o people_n know_v and_o practice_v without_o conversion_n be_v nothing_o i_o mean_v either_o please_a to_o god_n or_o profitable_a to_o salvation_n unto_o themselves_o they_o may_v i_o deny_v not_o know_v many_o point_n and_o learn_v sundry_a instruction_n as_o concern_v the_o letter_n but_o to_o know_v so_o as_o they_o believe_v without_o which_o faith_n it_o be_v impossible_a for_o they_o to_o please_v god_n they_o can_v without_o conversion_n and_o to_o practice_v so_o in_o their_o life_n as_o that_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o repent_v and_o live_v holy_o without_o which_o they_o shall_v perish_v and_o never_o see_v the_o lord_n that_o be_v impossible_a without_o the_o same_o conversion_n for_o these_o cause_n and_o some_o other_o of_o which_o this_o be_v not_o the_o least_o that_o by_o experience_n i_o have_v see_v great_a fruit_n come_v of_o this_o doctrine_n diligent_o and_o much_o teach_v and_o little_a fruit_n where_o it_o have_v not_o be_v much_o in_o use_n for_o such_o cause_n i_o say_v i_o have_v of_o purpose_n set_v out_o many_o sermon_n of_o this_o argument_n desire_v that_o the_o people_n may_v be_v make_v better_o acquaint_v with_o it_o and_o that_o such_o preacher_n as_o think_v i_o worthy_a to_o be_v hear_v in_o this_o request_n will_v frame_v themselves_o to_o teach_v it_o in_o their_o own_o or_o in_o other_o place_n where_o they_o come_v as_o for_o they_o that_o fear_v they_o shall_v glut_v the_o people_n with_o beat_v thus_o upon_o the_o same_o thing_n as_o though_o they_o can_v preach_v no_o other_o i_o answer_v if_o we_o preach_v to_o the_o end_n the_o people_n may_v practice_v that_o which_o we_o teach_v and_o if_o the_o people_n also_o make_v use_n of_o that_o which_o they_o learn_v about_o this_o matter_n it_o shall_v be_v find_v so_o hard_a and_o precious_a to_o know_v themselves_o convert_v that_o they_o shall_v themselves_o desire_v that_o doctrine_n concern_v it_o to_o be_v teach_v again_o and_o again_o and_o namely_o of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n rather_o than_o to_o be_v weary_a of_o it_o for_o they_o shall_v see_v that_o when_o the_o same_o thing_n shall_v be_v teach_v out_o of_o new_a text_n even_o the_o old_a matter_n shall_v be_v in_o manner_n new_a to_o they_o now_o it_o follow_v to_o show_v why_o these_o text_n be_v set_v down_o in_o the_o order_n in_o which_o they_o be_v place_v in_o the_o treatise_n the_o first_o text_n be_v act_n 16.24_o and_o matth._n 24.12.13_o and_o the_o sermon_n on_o both_o tend_v direct_o to_o show_v how_o a_o sinner_n be_v convert_v except_o the_o begin_n of_o the_o sermon_n in_o the_o 16._o of_o the_o act_n which_o yet_o make_v a_o way_n to_o the_o doctrine_n of_o conversion_n in_o the_o story_n of_o the_o jailer_n and_o in_o those_o two_o sermon_n the_o reader_n may_v see_v the_o three_o part_n of_o conversion_n and_o diverse_a of_o
who_o be_v pinch_v with_o see_v their_o necessity_n and_o want_n of_o god_n favour_n and_o yet_o be_v persuade_v that_o without_o it_o they_o can_v be_v save_v nor_o have_v any_o peace_n they_o beside_o go_v out_o to_o hear_v will_v also_o question_v further_o about_o their_o estate_n and_o in_o the_o heaviness_n of_o their_o heart_n will_v say_v to_o the_o lord_n merchant_n who_o be_v furnish_v with_o all_o store_n fit_a for_o they_o sir_n what_o shall_v we_o do_v to_o be_v save_v that_o so_o we_o may_v attain_v thereto_o but_o this_o be_v further_a to_o be_v mark_v repair_v that_o as_o the_o jailor_n here_o seek_v out_o for_o himself_o and_o move_v question_n about_o his_o salvation_n be_v persuade_v that_o they_o be_v both_o able_a to_o tell_v he_o that_o which_o he_o ask_v they_o and_o be_v resolve_v as_o we_o see_v by_o that_o which_o follow_v to_o rest_v upon_o and_o embrace_v their_o answer_n as_o from_o god_n so_o there_o must_v be_v in_o those_o who_o be_v prick_v in_o their_o conscience_n so_o much_o wisdom_n as_o to_o repair_v to_o those_o man_n and_o brethren_n 2.37_o who_o can_v and_o will_v resolve_v their_o doubt_n and_o they_o must_v be_v also_o ready_a to_o receive_v the_o same_o from_o their_o mouth_n as_o from_o the_o messenger_n of_o god_n when_o it_o shall_v in_o the_o evidence_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o persuasion_n of_o their_o conscience_n be_v deliver_v unto_o they_o for_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v right_o apply_v will_v work_v kind_o upon_o they_o and_o quiet_v they_o whereas_o other_o comfort_n will_v not_o fasten_v on_o they_o nor_o satisfy_v they_o but_o until_o man_n do_v begin_v to_o question_v about_o their_o estate_n they_o be_v in_o no_o forwardness_n towards_o their_o salvation_n quest_n if_o it_o be_v ask_v whether_o all_o must_v of_o necessity_n move_v question_n about_o it_o answ_n i_o answer_v yea_o unless_o such_o doubt_n as_o arise_v about_o the_o same_o be_v clear_o answer_v by_o public_a preach_n and_o yet_o herein_o they_o who_o propound_v they_o must_v be_v wise_a and_o prepare_v as_o i_o have_v say_v to_o be_v direct_v by_o the_o answer_n which_o shall_v be_v give_v they_o from_o god_n 10.33_o even_o as_o cornelius_n say_v unto_o peter_n when_o he_o come_v to_o his_o house_n to_o tell_v he_o what_o he_o shall_v do_v of_o himself_o his_o kinsman_n and_o especial_a friend_n we_o be_v now_o here_o present_a before_o god_n to_o hear_v all_o thing_n that_o be_v command_v thou_o of_o he_o and_o thus_o much_o of_o the_o jailor_n question_n one_o of_o the_o near_a mean_n of_o his_o this_o therefore_o be_v well_o to_o be_v consider_v for_o this_o be_v the_o thing_n which_o he_o stand_v in_o need_n of_o and_o that_o without_o the_o which_o he_o can_v not_o be_v save_v for_o he_o be_v already_o thorough_o trouble_v in_o his_o conscience_n need_v not_o to_o be_v urge_v to_o sorrow_n and_o prick_n of_o heart_n fear_v damnation_n already_o for_o his_o horrible_a sin_n but_o have_v need_n of_o comfort_n rather_o through_o the_o forgiveness_n thereof_o which_o he_o can_v no_o otherwise_o obtain_v but_o by_o faith_n and_o therefore_o they_o require_v this_o of_o he_o namely_o that_o he_o shall_v believe_v in_o the_o lord_n jesus_n for_o the_o remission_n of_o his_o sin_n rather_o than_o any_o other_o thing_n because_o have_v this_o the_o love_n of_o christ_n he_o shall_v know_v so_o much_o namely_o that_o he_o must_v believe_v to_o the_o end_n he_o may_v both_o be_v the_o better_o prepare_v to_o ask_v and_o learn_v of_o they_o how_o he_o shall_v come_v to_o obtain_v it_o and_o also_o esteem_v more_o high_o and_o precious_o of_o it_o which_o be_v the_o next_o way_n to_o come_v by_o it_o this_o point_n be_v the_o more_o to_o be_v mark_v because_o good_a work_n follow_v faith_n as_o the_o heat_n do_v the_o fire_n so_o soon_o as_o the_o thief_n believe_v he_o confess_v christ_n &_o show_v other_o fruit_n of_o his_o faith_n such_o as_o in_o seal_v and_o ratify_v and_o be_v there_o not_o good_a reason_n thereof_o if_o a_o man_n have_v the_o write_n of_o a_o great_a inheritance_n pass_v over_o to_o he_o will_v he_o not_o think_v it_o long_o till_o he_o have_v the_o seal_n and_o great_a matter_n be_v that_o night_n pass_v over_o by_o the_o lord_n to_o he_o even_o heaven_n life_n salvation_n and_o happiness_n these_o therefore_o he_o desire_v to_o have_v god_n seal_v set_v unto_o and_o so_o as_o he_o may_v have_v this_o he_o care_v not_o for_o his_o sleep_n or_o his_o ease_n neither_o fear_n he_o any_o trouble_n that_o may_v ensue_v upon_o it_o doct._n and_o this_o teach_v all_o such_o as_o god_n endue_v with_o faith_n confirm_v when_o they_o have_v seek_v it_o earnest_o to_o seek_v by_o all_o mean_n speedy_o to_o have_v it_o confirm_v unto_o they_o and_o to_o get_v all_o possible_a testimony_n thereof_o for_o as_o nothing_o in_o the_o world_n be_v so_o precious_a as_o it_o be_v and_o therefore_o not_o with_o like_a care_n to_o be_v seek_v so_o neither_o be_v any_o thing_n with_o like_a regard_n to_o be_v preserve_v and_o witness_v to_o they_o that_o have_v it_o which_o i_o speak_v as_o well_o for_o the_o ignorant_o sake_n who_o know_v not_o that_o there_o may_v many_o evidence_n be_v gather_v of_o their_o salvation_n as_o to_o stir_v up_o those_o who_o have_v better_a understanding_n who_o though_o they_o know_v it_o yet_o find_v many_o way_n to_o hinder_v themselves_o from_o this_o benefit_n for_o it_o may_v just_o be_v complain_v of_o that_o it_o be_v too_o slight_o look_v after_o of_o the_o most_o part_n but_o to_o set_v down_o any_o of_o they_o here_o i_o forbear_v because_o i_o have_v do_v it_o in_o many_o other_o place_n and_o some_o follow_v immediate_o to_o be_v mention_v joy._n the_o next_o fruit_n of_o faith_n which_o also_o to_o make_v good_a my_o last_o speech_n be_v a_o infallible_a token_n of_o eternal_a life_n to_o they_o that_o have_v it_o be_v joy_n for_o that_o he_o believe_v in_o god_n which_o be_v right_o understand_v 8.13_o be_v no_o less_o for_o although_o many_o hear_v and_o receive_v the_o word_n with_o joy_n because_o they_o hear_v most_o precious_a and_o strange_a thing_n bring_v to_o light_n by_o the_o preach_n of_o it_o yet_o this_o be_v not_o the_o joy_n i_o speak_v of_o but_o to_o have_v inward_a peace_n and_o joy_n through_o believe_v that_o discern_v from_o the_o other_o even_o as_o true_a sorrow_n which_o be_v sorrow_n indeed_o may_v be_v from_o that_o which_o be_v counterfeit_a for_o as_o solomon_n say_v the_o heart_n know_v she_o own_o heaviness_n and_o the_o stranger_n shall_v not_o be_v partaker_n of_o her_o joy_n counterfeit_v so_o thereby_o we_o may_v gather_v that_o as_o heaviness_n be_v feel_v so_o be_v joy_n also_o which_o no_o other_o but_o he_o that_o have_v it_o can_v have_v any_o part_n in_o for_o the_o other_o try_v it_o not_o in_o the_o true_a weight_n of_o god_n word_n which_o be_v proof_n enough_o that_o it_o be_v frothy_a deceivable_a and_o not_o sound_a whereas_o the_o true_a believer_n think_v he_o can_v never_o bestow_v too_o much_o labour_n to_o know_v that_o his_o comfort_n be_v wrought_v by_o god_n and_o shed_v into_o his_o hart_n by_o the_o holy_a ghost_n 5.5_o because_o it_o be_v his_o crown_n and_o glory_n and_o that_o wherein_o his_o happiness_n consist_v 8.8.39_o as_o the_o queen_n chief_a chamberlain_n the_o people_n of_o samaria_n when_o they_o be_v convert_v by_o philip_n and_o the_o other_o church_n of_o judea_n and_o galilee_n do_v well_o testify_v neither_o let_v this_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n can_v not_o grow_v in_o any_o heart_n and_o likewise_o come_v from_o it_o and_o if_o it_o be_v so_o what_o heart_n be_v that_o he_o wish_v unto_o they_o to_o the_o which_o may_v be_v answer_v that_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n and_o obedience_n to_o his_o commandment_n do_v not_o come_v from_o every_o heart_n neither_o do_v such_o fruit_n grow_v in_o every_o garden_n note_v may_v proceed_v from_o thence_o the_o party_n be_v thus_o persuade_v of_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o the_o free_a remission_n of_o sin_n and_o what_o unlooked_v for_o contentment_n he_o have_v thereby_o break_v forth_o into_o the_o praise_n of_o god_n with_o admire_v his_o kindness_n and_o say_v what_o thanks_n shall_v i_o give_v unto_o the_o lord_n for_o his_o unspeakable_a mercy_n unto_o may_v see_v whether_o he_o have_v they_o or_o no._n and_o to_o begin_v let_v he_o know_v that_o about_o the_o first_o of_o they_o conscience_n which_o be_v prick_v or_o wound_v of_o conscience_n and_o fear_n of_o god_n displeasure_n for_o the_o same_o i_o give_v these_o two_o caveat_n or_o watchword_n the_o one_o be_v this_o that_o if_o god_n press_v our_o conscience_n with_o the_o powerful_a preach_n of_o his_o word_n note_v and_o accuse_v and_o arrest_v they_o thereby_o that_o we_o in_o no_o wise_n resist_v that_o work_n of_o grace_n but_o submit_v ourselves_o thereto_o see_v he_o use_v to_o do_v so_o to_o they_o who_o he_o will_v save_v the_o other_o that_o be_v
they_o use_v all_o diligence_n and_o arm_v themselves_o now_o while_o god_n give_v they_o this_o little_a breathe_n from_o persecution_n that_o so_o by_o their_o confidence_n pure_a heart_n good_a conscience_n love_n and_o patience_n and_o other_o grace_n they_o may_v be_v fit_a to_o lead_v a_o godly_a life_n in_o the_o world_n with_o ease_n and_o strengthen_v themselves_o against_o fall_n and_o the_o bait_n of_o sin_n on_o every_o side_n and_o it_o be_v manifest_a to_o all_o of_o we_o who_o can_v judge_v that_o by_o such_o mean_n and_o a_o sound_a ministry_n watch_v pray_v and_o the_o like_a the_o church_n of_o god_n can_v grow_v in_o grace_n and_o no_o otherwise_o and_o that_o they_o do_v thus_o it_o be_v apparent_a by_o that_o which_o we_o read_v in_o the_o second_o of_o the_o act_n 43._o where_o it_o be_v say_v that_o they_o be_v daily_o in_o the_o temple_n and_o continue_v in_o the_o apostle_n doctrine_n and_o fellowship_n and_o in_o break_v of_o bread_n and_o prayer_n and_o this_o use_n shall_v all_o true_a particular_a church_n and_o people_n of_o god_n make_v of_o their_o liberty_n of_o peace_n and_o of_o live_v free_a from_o persecution_n from_o the_o which_o god_n have_v a_o long_a time_n free_v many_o of_o his_o good_a servant_n in_o this_o age_n howsoever_o some_o be_v much_o and_o oft_o under_o the_o cross_n yea_o and_o that_o right_a heavy_a and_o sharp_a such_o therefore_o shall_v glorify_v god_n by_o bring_v forth_o fruit_n not_o in_o a_o common_a sort_n yea_o all_o possible_a good_a shall_v be_v do_v of_o they_o and_o not_o omit_v for_o as_o thought_n and_o meditation_n about_o the_o favour_n of_o god_n desire_v above_o all_o thing_n to_o be_v assure_v of_o it_o the_o middle_a age_a christian_n and_o such_o as_o be_v somewhat_o stay_v in_o faith_n and_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n shall_v chief_o be_v occupy_v in_o strive_v against_o their_o lust_n and_o fight_v with_o they_o the_o ancient_a and_o experience_a who_o have_v do_v both_o uncharitableness_n maliciousness_n and_o what_o not_o of_o that_o kind_n i_o speak_v not_o of_o the_o disorder_n of_o life_n for_o they_o be_v more_o fit_o to_o be_v reprove_v in_o the_o next_o use_n which_o the_o church_n make_v of_o their_o peace_n but_o of_o the_o gross_a distemperature_n of_o the_o heart_n for_o although_o these_o time_n of_o prosperity_n and_o peace_n have_v be_v the_o fit_a season_n for_o man_n to_o increase_v in_o goodness_n and_o grace_n even_o as_o the_o harvest_n be_v to_o gather_v in_o the_o corn_n yet_o whether_o we_o inquire_v into_o particular_a church_n or_o person_n we_o shall_v find_v nothing_o more_o true_a than_o this_o that_o peace_n and_o plenty_n have_v poison_v for_o the_o most_o part_n the_o enjoyer_n of_o they_o sin_n but_o if_o the_o people_n of_o god_n who_o i_o teach_v now_o to_o make_v this_o use_n of_o his_o blessing_n be_v not_o wound_v in_o by_o the_o devil_n cunning_a sleight_n among_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o world_n it_o be_v the_o
