but_o the_o power_n of_o godliness_n be_v deny_v and_o as_o it_o be_v then_o so_o it_o have_v be_v ever_o since_o and_o be_v so_o at_o this_o day_n there_o be_v very_o few_o christian_n among_o christian_n few_o yea_o a_o very_a inconsiderable_a number_n among_o professor_n who_o do_v in_o deed_n and_o in_o truth_n submit_v to_o the_o lord_n jesus_n and_o take_v his_o yoke_n upon_o they_o it_o be_v the_o great_a and_o main_a business_n that_o the_o minister_n of_o the_o gospel_n have_v to_o do_v to_o convert_v man_n to_o the_o life_n and_o practice_n of_o christianity_n the_o name_n and_o shadow_n whereof_o they_o do_v only_o retain_v this_o be_v their_o work_n as_o much_o almost_o here_o as_o it_o will_v be_v be_v they_o among_o turk_n and_o indian_n it_o be_v somewhat_o easy_a to_o bring_v man_n to_o a_o outward_a order_n and_o conformity_n with_o the_o rest_n in_o attend_v public_a ordinance_n general_o they_o rush_v in_o upon_o they_o and_o take_v it_o as_o a_o great_a affront_n to_o be_v keep_v back_o from_o any_o but_o to_o prevail_v with_o they_o out_o of_o a_o equal_a respect_n to_o all_o the_o precept_n of_o the_o gospel_n one_o as_o well_o as_o another_o without_o partiality_n to_o endeavour_v a_o universal_a gospel-obedience_n throughout_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o their_o life_n in_o all_o manner_n of_o conversation_n both_o towards_o god_n and_o man_n be_v only_a net_n impossible_a and_o no_o wonder_n see_v they_o think_v it_o be_v of_o no_o concernment_n either_o to_o the_o attain_n of_o that_o good_a which_o they_o chief_o desire_v or_o the_o escape_n of_o that_o evil_n which_o they_o main_o fear_v it_o be_v sufficient_a for_o the_o carry_v on_o of_o their_o worldly_a design_n which_o be_v all_o they_o aim_v at_o live_v among_o a_o people_n profess_v themselves_o christian_n to_o who_o the_o name_n of_o heathen_a be_v abominable_a to_o take_v upon_o they_o the_o like_a form_n of_o religion_n that_o other_o do_v but_o as_o for_o any_o thing_n more_o see_v it_o be_v of_o no_o such_o advantage_n in_o this_o world_n and_o they_o neither_o hope_v nor_o fear_n for_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v they_o do_v not_o regard_v it_o this_o be_v one_o reason_n why_o when_o we_o have_v do_v all_o that_o we_o can_v we_o can_v get_v they_o beyond_o a_o form_n and_o that_o not_o the_o strict_a neither_o man_n will_v never_o be_v under_o the_o power_n of_o that_o the_o truth_n whereof_o they_o do_v not_o believe_v but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o only_a reason_n for_o some_o of_o they_o do_v believe_v i_o mean_v with_o a_o historical_a faith_n the_o truth_n of_o what_o be_v tell_v they_o in_o the_o gospel_n and_o yet_o for_o all_o that_o live_v as_o wretched_a wicked_a life_n as_o if_o they_o believe_v it_o not_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o be_v their_o presumption_n and_o carnal_a security_n into_o which_o they_o argue_v themselves_o by_o a_o false_a reason_n that_o there_o be_v a_o heaven_n they_o believe_v but_o they_o think_v they_o shall_v not_o be_v shut_v out_o of_o it_o and_o that_o there_o be_v a_o hell_n but_o they_o hope_v they_o shall_v never_o come_v there_o though_o they_o walk_v on_o after_o the_o imagination_n of_o their_o own_o heart_n in_o the_o allow_a omission_n of_o some_o one_o or_o more_o know_a duty_n enjoin_v in_o the_o scripture_n and_o commission_n of_o some_o one_o or_o more_o know_a sin_n therein_o forbid_v yet_o they_o promise_v themselves_o peace_n as_o they_o deut._n 29.19_o they_o hope_v they_o shall_v do_v as_o well_o as_o other_o when_o they_o come_v to_o die_v whatever_o they_o read_v or_o hear_v of_o in_o the_o scripture_n to_o the_o contrary_a notwithstanding_o there_o be_v multitude_n of_o these_o presumptuous_a one_o among_o we_o and_o scoffer_n prophaner_n of_o the_o lord_n day_n etc._n etc._n or_o secret_o profane_a such_o as_o under_o a_o garb_n of_o civility_n or_o more_o than_o ordinary_a profession_n hide_v the_o foul_a wickedness_n such_o as_o sin_v in_o the_o secret_a chamber_n as_o those_o that_o be_v give_v to_o self-pollution_n that_o defile_v themselves_o by_o themselves_o close_a adulterer_n and_o adulteress_n that_o have_v husband_n and_o wife_n to_o hide_v their_o uncleanness_n close_a tipler_n and_o drunkard_n who_o will_v now_o and_o then_o shoot_v into_o a_o alehouse_n but_o be_v ordinary_o drink_v in_o their_o own_o house_n secret_a dice-player_n and_o gamester_n that_o squander_v away_o their_o time_n and_o money_n when_o they_o be_v out_o of_o the_o magistrate_n reach_v such_o as_o have_v not_o renounce_v the_o hide_a thing_n of_o dishonesty_n but_o will_v secret_o cozen_v and_o cheat_v defraud_n and_o go_v beyond_o their_o brethren_n one_o will_v wonder_v that_o any_o of_o these_o shall_v entertain_v one_o thought_n of_o enter_v into_o heaven_n and_o that_o they_o do_v not_o rather_o fear_v every_o moment_n lest_o god_n shall_v strike_v they_o with_o a_o thunderbolt_n into_o hell_n but_o usual_o it_o be_v so_o that_o even_o such_o as_o these_o have_v as_o confident_a a_o expectation_n of_o happiness_n in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v as_o the_o best_a ask_v they_o and_o they_o will_v tell_v you_o they_o hope_v to_o be_v save_v as_o well_o as_o the_o proud_a precisian_n of_o you_o all_o they_o have_v it_o almost_o at_o the_o end_n of_o every_o sentence_n as_o i_o hope_v to_o be_v save_v what_o it_o be_v that_o embolden_v they_o in_o this_o manner_n and_o make_v they_o thus_o foolhardy_a may_v be_v easy_o imagine_v 1_o some_o confuse_a thought_n of_o god_n mercy_n they_o think_v he_o that_o make_v they_o will_v not_o damn_v they_o they_o can_v imagine_v when_o it_o come_v to_o be_v their_o own_o case_n that_o he_o can_v be_v so_o cruel_a to_o his_o creature_n as_o to_o torment_v they_o eternal_o in_o hell_n to_o show_v the_o particular_a working_n of_o their_o thought_n here_o 1_o they_o think_v only_o on_o his_o mercy_n and_o not_o at_o all_o on_o his_o justice_n they_o think_v he_o be_v all_o mercy_n and_o love_n and_o goodness_n and_o the_o thought_n that_o they_o have_v of_o this_o quite_o swallow_v up_o all_o thought_n of_o his_o justice_n 2_o they_o cull_v out_o many_o of_o those_o scripture_n that_o speak_v of_o the_o love_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n as_o that_o he_o be_v love_n and_o dwell_v in_o love_n that_o he_o be_v slow_a to_o anger_n and_o plenteous_a in_o mercy_n and_o do_v not_o willing_o grieve_v the_o child_n of_o man_n etc._n etc._n 3_o they_o argue_v from_o god_n goodness_n in_o this_o world_n that_o he_o will_v not_o be_v otherwise_o to_o they_o at_o least_o in_o the_o world_n to_o come_v he_o be_v good_a unto_o all_o and_o his_o tender_a mercy_n be_v over_o all_o his_o work_n he_o cause_v his_o sun_n to_o shine_v upon_o the_o just_a and_o unjust_a also_o they_o see_v that_o he_o do_v not_o punish_v when_o provoke_v but_o be_v long-suffering_a and_o full_a of_o forbearance_n hence_o 4_o they_o think_v that_o when_o minister_n preach_v damnation_n they_o do_v but_o pry_v into_o god_n secret_n and_o vent_v their_o own_o passion_n and_o know_v not_o of_o what_o spirit_n they_o be_v of_o thus_o believe_v for_o faith_n be_v ground_v upon_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o scripture_n say_v he_o that_o believe_v shall_v be_v save_v now_o come_v to_o these_o man_n after_o this_o and_o tell_v they_o of_o the_o threaten_n why_o 1_o they_o think_v the_o threatening_n will_v
not_o be_v execute_v they_o think_v there_o be_v some_o use_n of_o they_o in_o terrorem_fw-la to_o over-awe_n man_n a_o little_a that_o they_o may_v not_o be_v wicked_a over_o much_o but_o that_o god_n never_o threaten_v with_o intent_n to_o execute_v or_o if_o they_o must_v be_v execute_v then_o 2_o it_o be_v but_o upon_o those_o that_o despise_v the_o promise_n but_o for_o their_o part_n they_o rely_v on_o they_o 3_o however_o it_o be_v they_o think_v they_o must_v not_o despair_v but_o be_v of_o a_o good_a courage_n and_o hope_v to_o the_o last_o breath_n and_o therefore_o notwithstanding_o all_o the_o threaten_n they_o have_v these_o and_o these_o promise_n and_o here_o they_o will_v hold_v fast_o if_o this_o do_v not_o full_o comfort_v they_o then_z 3_o they_o look_v into_o themselves_o and_o conclude_v that_o though_o they_o be_v guilty_a of_o a_o great_a many_o sin_n yet_o they_o be_v but_o infirmity_n and_o fail_n for_o they_o often_o hear_v that_o to_o fall_v into_o such_o and_o such_o sinful_a act_n may_v consist_v with_o grace_n and_o for_o their_o part_n they_o can_v help_v it_o they_o swear_v indeed_o but_o it_o be_v but_o now_o and_o then_o when_o they_o be_v provoke_v they_o be_v sometime_o drink_v but_o it_o be_v but_o now_o and_o then_o when_o they_o be_v draw_v in_o by_o good_a company_n and_o they_o do_v forget_v themselves_o be_v they_o be_v aware_a and_o it_o be_v not_o so_o much_o many_o time_n only_o they_o have_v weak_a brain_n than_o other_o and_o man_n think_v they_o be_v drink_v when_o they_o be_v not_o 4_o they_o consider_v the_o example_n of_o godly_a man_n in_o scripture_n who_o have_v be_v guilty_a of_o the_o same_o sin_n as_o noah_n lot_n david_n peter_n etc._n etc._n and_o hence_o they_o argue_v that_o every_o man_n have_v his_o fail_n and_o the_o best_a must_v have_v their_o grain_n of_o allowance_n and_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o in_o many_o thing_n we_o offend_v all_o and_o if_o any_o man_n say_v he_o have_v no_o sin_n he_o be_v a_o liar_n and_o now_o they_o can_v hold_v no_o long_o but_o present_o fly_v out_o upon_o other_o professor_n as_o mere_a pretender_n to_o perfection_n and_o saintship_n which_o they_o hold_v to_o be_v a_o thing_n impossible_a on_o this_o side_n heaven_n and_o so_o fall_v to_o scoff_v and_o jeer_a and_o rail_v upon_o those_o that_o live_v more_o conformable_o to_o the_o rule_n of_o their_o religion_n than_o themselves_o hence_o 5_o they_o think_v that_o all_o those_o many_o of_o they_o at_o least_o that_o do_v condemn_v they_o live_v in_o the_o same_o sin_n secret_o or_o in_o as_o bad_a of_o another_o kind_n though_o they_o will_v not_o swear_v say_v they_o they_o will_v lie_v and_o though_o they_o will_v not_o be_v drink_v they_o will_v play_v the_o glutton_n and_o that_o they_o can_v endure_v good_a fellowship_n with_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o neighbour_n it_o be_v only_o from_o pride_n and_o self-conceitedness_a stand_v off_o touch_v i_o not_o i_o be_o holy_a than_o thou_o hence_o again_o they_o conclude_v as_o for_o perfection_n no_o mortal_a man_n be_v capable_a of_o it_o it_o be_v but_o in_o vain_a to_o endeavour_v after_o it_o or_o pretend_v unto_o it_o if_o this_o do_v not_o quiet_a their_o guilty_a conscience_n then_o 6_o they_o hope_v they_o shall_v repent_v and_o then_o they_o be_v sure_o all_o will_v be_v well_o then_o
