former_a part_n of_o it_o look_v if_o we_o view_v it_o separately_z from_o the_o antecedent_n and_o consequent_n of_o it_o sure_o if_o any_o thing_n will_v justify_v our_o hard_a censure_n of_o god_n providence_n it_o will_v be_v the_o behold_v of_o such_o a_o rare_a and_o excellent_a person_n expose_v to_o so_o many_o misery_n and_o calamity_n to_o see_v he_o cast_v forth_o to_o the_o wide_a world_n as_o a_o helpless_a prey_n to_o the_o rage_n of_o his_o enemy_n to_o behold_v he_o hang_v upon_o the_o cross_n desert_v of_o his_o friend_n mock_v and_o torment_v by_o his_o barbarous_a murderer_n and_o in_o the_o most_o bitter_a agony_n breathe_v out_o his_o white_a and_o innocent_a soul_n o_o good_a lord_n what_o a_o dismal_a prospect_n of_o thy_o providence_n be_v here_o but_o in_o so_o great_a a_o measure_n deprive_v of_o the_o vast_a advantage_n of_o true_a religion_n but_o how_o do_v we_o know_v how_o god_n will_v dispose_v of_o they_o in_o the_o other_o world_n what_o they_o and_o when_o mankind_n by_o their_o wilful_a wickedness_n and_o inadvertency_n have_v almost_o obliterated_a the_o law_n of_o their_o nature_n and_o extinguish_v their_o natural_a sense_n of_o and_o ignorance_n he_o shall_v then_o be_v so_o compassionate_a as_o to_o hang_v out_o a_o light_n from_o heaven_n to_o we_o to_o rectify_v our_o wander_n and_o guide_v our_o foot_n in_o the_o path_n we_o shall_v walk_v in_o be_v such_o a_o glorious_a expression_n of_o his_o goodness_n as_o for_o ever_o deserve_v our_o most_o thankful_a acknowledgement_n but_o then_o that_o he_o shall_v not_o only_o reveal_v to_o we_o what_o he_o have_v before_o imprint_v on_o our_o nature_n and_o we_o have_v most_o unworthy_o raze_v out_o and_o obliterated_a but_o also_o discover_v so_o much_o more_o to_o we_o than_o ever_o we_o do_v or_o can_v have_v know_v by_o the_o light_n of_o our_o nature_n that_o he_o shall_v not_o only_o repeat_v his_o former_a kindness_n to_o we_o which_o we_o have_v so_o shameful_o abuse_v but_o make_v such_o stupendous_a addition_n to_o it_o as_o he_o have_v do_v in_o the_o revelation_n of_o his_o gospel_n that_o manger_n all_o those_o impiety_n and_o provocation_n by_o which_o for_o so_o many_o age_n we_o have_v excite_v his_o patience_n he_o shall_v not_o only_o so_o love_v we_o as_o to_o restore_v to_o we_o the_o light_n which_o we_o have_v almost_o extinguish_v but_o to_o give_v his_o only_o beget_v son_n that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v etc._n etc._n be_v such_o a_o amaze_a instance_n of_o goodness_n as_o can_v hardly_o be_v reflect_v on_o without_o a_o ecstasy_n of_o admiration_n in_o which_o word_n you_o have_v god_n reveal_v love_n and_o goodness_n to_o the_o world_n measure_v by_o a_o twofold_a may_v be_v excite_v to_o the_o exercise_n of_o all_o those_o passive_a virtue_n which_o be_v not_o only_o most_o glorious_a but_o most_o difficult_a to_o human_a nature_n and_o that_o by_o behold_v make_v himself_o of_o no_o reputation_n take_v on_o he_o the_o form_n of_o a_o servant_n become_v a_o man_n of_o sorrow_n and_o acquaint_v himself_o with_o grief_n and_o all_o this_o to_o put_v himself_o into_o a_o better_a capacity_n of_o do_v good_a to_o the_o world_n good_a god_n when_o i_o consider_v with_o myself_o that_o once_o there_o be_v a_o time_n when_o thou_o do_v send_v thy_o bless_a son_n from_o heaven_n to_o assume_v my_o nature_n that_o therein_o he_o dwell_v upon_o this_o earth_n and_o converse_v with_o such_o poor_a mortal_n as_o myself_o that_o he_o suffer_v himself_o to_o be_v despise_v and_o persecute_v and_o by_o thy_o own_o appointment_n wander_v about_o like_o a_o poor_a wretch_n naked_a and_o destitute_a of_o all_o those_o comfort_n which_o i_o abundant_o enjoy_v and_o all_o this_o that_o he_o may_v the_o more_o effectual_o do_v good_a to_o a_o world_n of_o ill-natured_a sinner_n methinks_v this_o wondrous_a prodigy_n of_o love_n not_o only_o puzzle_v my_o conceit_n but_o outreach_v my_o wonder_n and_o admiration_n and_o though_o it_o be_v a_o love_n that_o exceed_v my_o large_a thought_n such_o as_o i_o have_v infinite_a cause_n to_o rejoice_v in_o but_o can_v never_o have_v have_v the_o impudence_n to_o expect_v yet_o while_o i_o stand_v gaze_v on_o it_o methinks_v i_o be_o like_a one_o that_o be_v look_v down_o from_o a_o stupendous_a precipice_n who_o height_n fill_v i_o with_o a_o tremble_a horror_n and_o even_a overset_n my_o reason_n 6_o thly_a and_o last_o the_o greatness_n of_o god_n love_n and_o goodness_n the_o serpent_n in_o the_o wilderness_n even_o so_o must_v the_o son_n of_o man_n be_v lift_v up_o that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v eternal_a life_n and_o so_o that_o if_o this_o prove_v ineffectual_a it_o be_v beyond_o the_o power_n of_o a_o omnipotent_a bounty_n to_o relieve_v we_o for_o though_o god_n can_v do_v all_o thing_n that_o can_v be_v well_o and_o wise_o do_v and_o do_v not_o imply_v a_o contradiction_n yet_o this_o can_v be_v no_o relief_n at_o all_o to_o we_o who_o reject_v his_o son_n and_o refuse_v to_o be_v make_v happy_a in_o the_o gracious_a method_n which_o he_o have_v prescribe_v to_o we_o for_o after_o this_o mighty_a gift_n of_o his_o own_o son_n to_o save_v we_o according_a to_o the_o method_n of_o his_o gospel_n there_o remain_v nothing_o more_o to_o be_v do_v for_o we_o but_o either_o to_o save_v we_o whether_o we_o will_v or_o no_o or_o else_o to_o make_v we_o happy_a in_o our_o sin_n and_o save_v we_o notwithstanding_o our_o continuance_n in_o they_o the_o former_a of_o which_o can_v neither_o be_v well_o nor_o wise_o do_v because_o by_o save_v we_o against_o our_o will_n he_o must_v deal_v with_o we_o in_o such_o a_o way_n as_o be_v repugnant_a to_o that_o law_n of_o liberty_n that_o be_v implant_v in_o our_o nature_n and_o use_v we_o not_o as_o free_a but_o as_o necessary_a agent_n and_o if_o and_o excommunicate_v your_o own_o soul_n from_o all_o hope_n of_o salvation_n be_v now_o at_o last_o persuade_v to_o comply_v with_o christ_n come_v which_o be_v to_o reduce_v you_o from_o the_o error_n of_o your_o way_n and_o to_o bring_v you_o to_o a_o serious_a repentance_n john_n iii_o 16_o that_o whosoever_o believe_v in_o he_o shall_v not_o perish_v but_o have_v everlasting_a life_n saviour_n of_o mankind_n but_o that_o it_o also_o include_v whatsoever_o be_v natural_o consequent_a thereunto_o for_o thus_o it_o be_v very_o ordinary_a with_o the_o scripture_n to_o express_v the_o natural_a effect_n and_o consequent_n of_o thing_n by_o their_o cause_n and_o principle_n this_o be_v the_o love_n of_o god_n say_v the_o apostle_n that_o we_o keep_v his_o commandment_n 1_o jo._n v_o 3_o whereas_o in_o strictness_n of_o speak_v our_o keep_v his_o commandment_n be_v only_o the_o effect_n or_o consequence_n of_o our_o love_v he_o so_o prov._n viij_o 13_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v to_o hate_v evil_a whereas_o indeed_o this_o be_v only_o the_o effect_n or_o consequence_n of_o the_o fear_n of_o the_o lord_n thus_o by_o know_v and_o hear_v and_o remember_v of_o god_n gospel-covenant_n always_o imploy_v its_o natural_a effect_n and_o consequent_n that_o be_v sincere_a and_o universal_a obedience_n to_o those_o rule_n of_o holy_a live_n which_o the_o gospel_n prescribe_v for_o this_o be_v the_o most_o natural_a effect_n of_o our_o believe_v in_o jesus_n christ._n and_o hence_o it_o be_v call_v the_o obedience_n of_o faith_n rom._n xuj_o 26_o that_o be_v the_o obedience_n which_o spring_v from_o faith_n as_o from_o its_o cause_n and_o principle_n and_o according_o rom._n x._o 16_o you_o find_v that_o to_o believe_v and_o to_o obey_v the_o gospel_n signify_v one_o and_o the_o same_o thing_n but_o they_o have_v not_o all_o obey_v the_o gospel_n say_v he_o for_o esaias_n say_v lord_n who_o have_v believe_v our_o report_n that_o be_v who_o have_v believe_v it_o so_o
as_o to_o obey_v it_o so_o that_o wheresoever_o faith_n be_v mention_v single_o as_o the_o condition_n of_o the_o gospel-covenant_n it_o be_v apparent_a it_o must_v be_v understand_v in_o the_o large_a sense_n as_o comprehend_v that_o obedience_n which_o be_v the_o effect_n and_o consequence_n of_o it_o so_o 1_o joh._n v_o 1_o whosoever_o believe_v that_o jesus_n be_v the_o christ_n be_v bear_v of_o god_n that_o be_v whosevever_o so_o believe_v the_o truth_n of_o this_o proposition_n as_o to_o practice_v upon_o it_o and_o govern_v his_o life_n and_o action_n according_a to_o the_o
