comfortable_a condition_n of_o free_a servant_n as_o you_o will_v say_v be_v except_v from_o that_o unjust_a tyranny_n or_o government_n that_o the_o wicked_a exercise_v over_o they_o and_o free_v also_o from_o that_o fearful_a estate_n to_o which_o they_o be_v constrain_o subject_a from_o the_o bondage_n of_o corruption_n that_o be_v from_o that_o same_o corruptible_a flit_a and_o vanish_v estate_n whereunto_o they_o be_v now_o subject_a and_o which_o lie_v upon_o they_o as_o a_o most_o heavy_a burden_n or_o yoke_n of_o bondage_n which_o they_o be_v still_o constrain_v daily_a to_o draw_v in_o and_o bear_v as_o bondslave_n do_v their_o state_n till_o it_o shall_v please_v god_n to_o give_v they_o a_o better_a and_o more_o free_a condition_n into_o the_o glorious_a liberty_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n he_o mean_v not_o that_o they_o shall_v be_v partaker_n of_o the_o same_o eternal_a glory_n with_o god_n child_n for_o if_o that_o be_v true_a then_o what_o difference_n shall_v there_o be_v betwixt_o god_n faithful_a servant_n &_o bruit_n beast_n beside_o we_o all_o know_v and_o believe_v that_o without_o faith_n there_o be_v as_o no_o purifieng_v of_o heart_n so_o no_o entrance_n into_o heaven_n and_o that_o gift_n of_o belief_n unreasonable_a creature_n shall_v never_o attain_v unto_o neither_o yet_o all_o man_n because_o as_o the_o apostle_n say_v faith_n be_v eternal_a life_n than_o the_o carnal_a and_o gross_a nature_n and_o constitution_n of_o beast_n and_o other_o thing_n but_o that_o be_v impossible_a both_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o god_n who_o have_v reveal_v the_o contrary_a in_o his_o word_n and_o also_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o we_o to_o who_o we_o know_v and_o believe_v that_o all_o thing_n be_v impossible_a that_o god_n have_v declare_v by_o his_o truth_n shall_v not_o be_v do_v and_o therefore_o also_o the_o other_o but_o a_o fond_a conceit_n of_o man_n idle_a head_n this_o rather_o as_o i_o take_v it_o he_o mean_v that_o in_o their_o kind_n and_o manner_n they_o shall_v be_v make_v partaker_n of_o a_o far_o better_a estate_n than_o they_o have_v while_o the_o world_n endure_v because_o that_o god_n shall_v full_o and_o wholye_n enjoy_v which_o also_o may_v appear_v by_o the_o word_n that_o the_o apostle_n use_v set_v glorious_a liberty_n deliverance_n and_o freedom_n against_o servile_a bondage_n and_o slavery_n verse_n 22._o for_o we_o know_v if_o any_o man_n will_v demand_v how_o this_o can_v be_v prove_v paul_n and_o the_o faithful_a together_o with_o he_o run_v to_o the_o holy_a testimony_n of_o their_o own_o conscience_n &_o the_o assure_a persuasion_n that_o they_o have_v there_o of_o the_o matter_n speak_v as_o if_o it_o be_v thus_o our_o own_o heart_n tell_v we_o that_o we_o sigh_v and_o groan_n they_o before_o rehearse_v neither_o do_v the_o apostle_n mean_v hereby_o to_o give_v any_o warrantise_n or_o strength_n to_o the_o odd_a speculation_n dream_n dotage_n &_o revelation_n of_o fanatical_a spirit_n as_o of_o the_o montanist_n euthrusiast_n mahometist_n &_o other_o heretofore_o or_o of_o the_o anabaptist_n family_n of_o love_n and_o papist_n and_o among_o they_o their_o monk_n in_o these_o our_o day_n for_o first_o and_o foremost_a he_o declare_v nothing_o here_o but_o that_o which_o he_o have_v receive_v as_o truth_n in_o the_o certainty_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o that_o also_o ground_v and_o settle_v upon_o the_o unmoveable_a rock_n of_o the_o word_n and_o upon_o that_o same_o particular_a feel_a
and_o the_o profession_n of_o his_o truth_n will_v give_v we_o as_o it_o be_v his_o strength_n make_v we_o thereby_o not_o only_o able_a to_o continue_v and_o hold_v out_o but_o to_o overcome_v &_o be_v conqueror_n yea_o more_o than_o earthly_a conqueror_n 8.37_o rom._n 8.37_o as_o the_o apostle_n himself_o speak_v in_o the_o late_a end_n of_o this_o eight_o chapter_n there_o be_v always_o this_o one_o special_a difference_n betwixt_o we_o and_o they_o that_o though_o they_o overcome_v to_o day_n yet_o they_o may_v through_o the_o sudden_a alteration_n change_n and_o inconstancy_n of_o particular_a experience_n that_o he_o have_v in_o himself_o well_o feel_v in_o himself_o he_o do_v therefore_o in_o these_o verse_n follow_v namely_o 19_o 20_o 21_o 22_o 23._o add_v another_o argument_n for_o comfort_n in_o affliction_n take_v from_o the_o example_n of_o all_o even_o the_o very_a unreasonable_a &_o insensible_a creature_n of_o who_o in_o these_o verse_n he_o affirm_v two_o special_a thing_n first_o that_o they_o travail_n in_o pain_n and_o groan_n after_o a_o fort_n under_o the_o burden_n of_o their_o misery_n as_o man_n do_v the_o other_o be_v that_o they_o do_v with_o a_o singular_a patience_n as_o a_o man_n will_v say_v wait_v for_o a_o time_n of_o joyful_a deliverance_n by_o which_o the_o apostle_n certain_o will_v have_v we_o to_o know_v and_o learn_v not_o only_o that_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o misery_n we_o have_v a_o common_a lot_n &_o portion_n with_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o creature_n but_o also_o that_o even_o by_o their_o example_n we_o shall_v patient_o tarry_v the_o time_n that_o god_n have_v set_v with_o himself_o and_o be_v not_o in_o our_o own_o power_n for_o our_o full_a deliverance_n out_o of_o those_o anguish_n &_o trouble_n which_o yet_o that_o we_o may_v the_o better_o understand_v it_o shall_v not_o be_v amiss_o in_o my_o mind_n in_o a_o few_o word_n to_o lay_v out_o the_o apostle_n reason_n who_o as_o i'take_v it_o argue_v thus_o all_o the_o creature_n do_v very_o well_o perceive_v that_o they_o be_v subject_a to_o vanity_n and_o corruption_n and_o yet_o notwithstandiug_v hope_n as_o it_o be_v that_o in_o good_a time_n and_o convenient_a season_n they_o shall_v be_v receive_v and_o restore_v therefore_o we_o also_o though_o we_o feel_v ourselves_o great_o beat_v down_o with_o diverse_a calamity_n yea_o and_o as_o it_o be_v oppress_v and_o overwhelm_v with_o the_o same_o ought_v notwithstanding_o steadfast_o to_o believe_v that_o through_o god_n goodness_n towards_o we_o in_o christ_n we_o shall_v not_o miscarry_v in_o this_o life_n the_o apostle_n bear_v record_n unto_o we_o 9_o 2._o cor_fw-la 4.8_o 9_o that_o though_o we_o be_v afflict_v on_o every_o side_n yet_o we_o be_v not_o in_o distress_n finish_v most_o excellent_a glory_n and_o blessedness_n for_o evermore_o and_o no_o doubt_n but_o of_o this_o the_o apostle_n reason_n there_o be_v very_o great_a &_o good_a reason_n also_o yea_o even_o declare_v by_o the_o apostle_n himself_o in_o his_o own_o word_n for_o if_o the_o creature_n subject_a to_o this_o corruption_n not_o by_o their_o own_o accord_n but_o by_o god_n appointment_n as_o a_o punishment_n upon_o they_o for_o the_o sin_n of_o mankind_n do_v yet_o notwithstanding_o that_o they_o be_v void_a of_o reason_n in_o their_o kind_n and_o after_o their_o manner_n as_o you_o will_v say_v both_o patient_o bear_v that_o burden_n and_o earnest_o expect_v a_o deliveraunce_n from_o the_o same_o when_o god_n will_v how_o much_o more_o shall_v the_o faithful_a do_v both_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o the_o lord_n have_v endue_v they_o not_o only_o with_o reason_n a_o common_a gift_n bestow_v upon_o all_o man_n but_o fill_v they_o after_o a_o sort_n with_o faith_n also_o 3.2_o phil._n 1.29_o 2._o thes_n 3.2_o a_o proper_a and_o peculiar_a grace_n unto_o his_o elect_a one_o only_a from_o which_o as_o from_o a_o clear_a and_o pure_a fountain_n they_o must_v of_o necessity_n flow_v in_o some_o measure_n both_o christian_n patience_n and_o many_o other_o good_a virtue_n likewise_o whereof_o also_o there_o be_v even_o this_o reason_n among_o many_o other_o that_o look_v upon_o whosoever_o god_n have_v bestow_v store_n of_o any_o of_o his_o grace_n either_o bodily_a or_o spiritual_a that_o even_o at_o their_o hand_n he_o look_v for_o a_o more_o liberal_a and_o plentiful_a yield_v than_o of_o those_o with_o who_o he_o have_v not_o deal_v in_o so_o great_a a_o largesse_n of_o his_o mercy_n the_o variety_n of_o grace_n also_o that_o god_n have_v bestow_v upon_o man_n special_o good_a man_n crave_v the_o same_o at_o their_o hand_n for_o to_o what_o end_n else_o have_v god_n give_v the_o same_o but_o that_o in_o the_o lawful_a and_o liberal_a use_n of_o they_o the_o giver_n principal_o may_v receive_v more_o glory_n and_o the_o user_n more_o comfort_n and_o profit_n and_o other_o also_o reap_v great_a good_a by_o they_o not_o only_o in_o this_o life_n but_o in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v hitherto_o as_o you_o see_v we_o have_v be_v occupy_v principal_o and_o i_o hope_v not_o uprofitable_o also_o in_o propound_v the_o apostle_n general_a drift_n out_o of_o which_o though_o we_o may_v indeed_o in_o some_o measure_n understand_v the_o true_a and_o natural_a sense_n of_o these_o word_n and_o so_o perhaps_o may_v think_v that_o we_o need_v not_o any_o further_a travel_n yet_o to_o the_o end_n we_o may_v more_o clear_o perceive_v his_o mind_n and_o meaning_n herein_o and_o so_o receive_v more_o spiritual_a sweetness_n from_o he_o i_o will_v not_o spare_v particular_o to_o examine_v the_o very_a verse_n and_o word_n as_o they_o lie_v bray_a as_o
as_o much_o as_o it_o have_v no_o good_a foundation_n to_o stand_v upon_o but_o also_o because_o it_o do_v wonderful_o darken_v if_o not_o utter_o evacuate_v and_o take_v away_o both_o the_o love_n of_o god_n and_o christ_n grace_n and_o favour_n also_o towards_o we_o for_o we_o know_v and_o have_v learn_v out_o of_o the_o scripture_n and_o therefore_o do_v believe_v it_o too_o that_o god_n so_o love_v the_o world_n 8.32_o john_n 3_o 16._o rom._n 8.32_o that_o he_o give_v his_o only_a beget_v son_n unto_o the_o death_n for_o we_o all_o to_o the_o end_n that_o every_o one_o of_o those_o the_o work_n of_o our_o salvation_n whereas_o we_o be_v sure_a that_o when_o the_o scripture_n will_v magnify_v his_o love_n towards_o we_o 6.10_o rom._n 5_o 6.10_o it_o tell_v we_o that_o he_o die_v for_o we_o when_o we_o be_v his_o utter_a enemy_n give_v we_o thereby_o to_o understand_v that_o he_o have_v no_o regard_n or_o consideration_n of_o himself_o at_o all_o but_o only_o of_o we_o yea_o he_o himself_o say_v 17.19_o john_n 17.19_o in_o the_o gospel_n after_o john_n that_o for_o our_o sake_n he_o sanctify_v himself_o etc._n etc._n by_o which_o he_o plain_o declare_v that_o he_o do_v not_o only_o sanctify_v himself_o for_o our_o sake_n alone_o but_o also_o that_o he_o derive_v the_o fruit_n and_o benefit_n of_o his_o own_o holiness_n over_o unto_o we_o purchase_v nothing_o thereby_o unto_o himself_o and_o no_o doubt_n but_o this_o be_v the_o meaning_n as_o of_o the_o whole_a scripture_n general_o so_o special_o of_o the_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n when_o they_o say_v righteousness_n these_o word_n we_o and_o we_o be_v so_o emphatical_a and_o forcible_a yea_o after_o a_o sort_n so_o particularise_v the_o matter_n and_o person_n that_o they_o show_v that_o for_o we_o and_o our_o sake_n only_o and_o for_o nothing_o to_o himself_o he_o become_v man_n and_o take_v upon_o he_o the_o shape_n of_o a_o servant_n which_o have_v it_o not_o be_v whole_o and_o altogether_o true_a it_o have_v be_v as_o easy_a a_o matter_n for_o the_o holy_a ghost_n or_o holy_a man_n inspire_v by_o the_o spirit_n of_o god_n to_o have_v say_v that_o he_o do_v it_o aswell_o for_o himself_o as_o for_o we_o but_o no_o such_o phrase_n can_v be_v find_v and_o therefore_o he_o mind_v to_o restrain_v christ_n humble_v and_o the_o fruit_n and_o effect_n of_o it_o which_o indeed_o be_v all_o his_o merit_n whole_o and_o altogether_o to_o us._n three_o it_o may_v seem_v strange_a in_o reason_n to_o all_o man_n if_o it_o be_v not_o erroneous_a in_o religion_n amongst_o christian_n that_o the_o merit_n of_o christ_n suffering_n shall_v have_v a_o large_a reach_n and_o be_v extend_v further_a than_o his_o passion_n and_o suffering_n themselves_o especial_o since_o that_o they_o themselves_o make_v his_o suffering_n the_o cause_n of_o his_o merit_n and_o his_o merit_n the_o effect_n of_o those_o cause_n in_o common_a sense_n we_o know_v that_o as_o a_o cause_n be_v before_o the_o effect_n for_o a_o effect_n can_v not_o be_v before_o there_o be_v a_o cause_n work_v the_o same_o effect_n so_o it_o be_v and_o must_v of_o necessity_n also_o be_v as_o large_a at_o the_o least_o as_o the_o effect_n itself_o if_o not_o more_o large_a in_o as_o much_o as_o it_o must_v not_o only_o give_v life_n and_o be_v to_o the_o thing_n for_o the_o present_a time_n produce_v but_o also_o preserve_v a_o continual_a life_n in_o itself_o for_o the_o bring_v out_o of_o the_o like_a effect_n still_o and_o they_o themselves_o have_v a_o rule_n in_o philosophy_n that_o whatsoever_o work_v or_o bring_v forth_o such_o a_o thing_n as_o the_o thing_n itself_o be_v that_o work_v or_o bring_v forth_o that_o thing_n that_o bring_v forth_o be_v in_o the_o same_o kind_n much_o more_o such_o a_o thing_n than_o that_o which_o be_v bring_v forth_o shall_v christ_n then_o by_o his_o death_n merit_n for_o himself_o and_o shall_v he_o not_o in_o his_o death_n die_v for_o himself_o but_o that_o christ_n suffer_v for_o himself_o they_o dare_v not_o advouch_v for_o the_o scripture_n affirm_v the_o contrary_a say_v 3.18_o 1_o pet._n 3.18_o that_o the_o just_a suffer_v for_o the_o unjust_a and_o that_o be_v to_o make_v also_o christ_n a_o transgressor_n whereas_o the_o word_n tell_v we_o that_o he_o do_v no_o sin_n neither_o be_v there_o any_o guile_n find_v in_o his_o mouth_n 53.9_o 1._o pet_n 2_o 22._o isaiah_n 53.9_o yea_o it_o be_v to_o leave_v ourselves_o in_o our_o sin_n because_o a_o sinner_n though_o he_o shall_v suffer_v never_o so_o much_o can_v clear_v himself_o much_o less_o other_o from_o sin_n or_o the_o punishment_n due_a unto_o the_o same_o and_o therefore_o also_o there_o be_v no_o reason_n why_o they_o shall_v hold_v that_o christ_n merit_v for_o himself_o certain_o touch_v this_o point_n this_o be_v my_o persuasion_n and_o i_o rest_v resolve_v that_o all_o good_a man_n will_v easy_o consent_v with_o i_o in_o the_o same_o to_o wit_n that_o this_o forgery_n that_o christ_n suffer_v on_o the_o cross_n that_o so_o by_o the_o merit_n of_o his_o work_n he_o may_v get_v unto_o himself_o some_o thing_n which_o before_o he_o have_v not_o come_v without_o all_o doubt_n even_o from_o satan_n himself_o who_o labour_v by_o this_o as_o by_o many_o other_o the_o like_a corruption_n to_o cast_v a_o thick_a mist_n or_o fog_n before_o the_o most_o excellent_a glory_n and_o grace_n of_o our_o saviour_n that_o so_o the_o same_o be_v dim_v at_o the_o first_o though_o not_o in_o the_o whole_a yet_o in_o some_o small_a part_n of_o it_o he_o may_v in_o the_o end_n by_o a_o little_a taint_n and_o discredit_v the_o whole_a and_o whosoever_o they_o be_v that_o see_v satan_n subtlety_n indeed_o do_v not_o only_o perceive_v this_o to_o be_v most_o true_a but_o have_v their_o heart_n also_o through_o god_n goodness_n enlighten_v to_o know_v to_o what_o end_n satan_n do_v it_o namely_o to_o bring_v they_o by_o doubt_v of_o some_o part_n of_o christ_n great_a glory_n at_o the_o least_o to_o distrust_v the_o whole_a and_o so_o by_o consequence_n to_o suffer_v he_o yea_o and_o that_o willing_o also_o to_o hold_v we_o captive_n in_o unbelief_n at_o his_o pleasure_n we_o have_v need_v therefore_o not_o only_o to_o look_v well_o about_o we_o lest_o we_o be_v ignorantlie_o or_o at_o unwares_o supprise_v of_o he_o in_o his_o grin_n but_o also_o to_o hearken_v and_o that_o attentive_o and_o careful_o to_o the_o voice_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n speak_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o write_a word_n which_o oftentimes_o tell_v we_o that_o in_o christ_n death_n and_o suffering_n we_o shall_v not_o labour_v to_o see_v taste_n think_v feel_v or_o know_v any_o thing_n else_o but_o god_n mere_a grace_n and_o goodness_n only_o and_o such_o great_a and_o inestimable_a love_n of_o our_o saviour_n christ_n to_o us-ward_n that_o he_o as_o a_o man_n will_v say_v quite_o and_o clean_o forget_v himself_o and_o look_v at_o nothing_o he_o mean_v by_o that_o term_n we_o which_o he_o expound_v in_o these_o word_n we_o which_o have_v receive_v the_o first_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o also_o what_o it_o be_v that_o we_o both_o sigh_v and_o wait_n for_o to_o wit_n our_o adoption_n that_o be_v the_o full_a manifestation_n and_o declaration_n of_o it_o which_o shall_v then_o indeed_o and_o not_o before_o be_v perfect_o accomplish_v when_o that_o our_o body_n shall_v be_v raise_v again_o out_o of_o the_o dust_n of_o death_n and_o untie_v to_o their_o own_o soul_n and_o so_o we_o both_o in_o body_n and_o soul_n make_v perfect_a partaker_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o blessedness_n but_o let_v we_o more_o particular_o examine_v the_o word_n and_o observe_v some_o doctrine_n out_o of_o the_o same_o that_o so_o also_o we_o may_v come_v to_o the_o end_n of_o this_o treaty_n verse_n 23._o and_o not_o only_o the_o creature_n to_o wit_n groan_v and_o travel_v in_o pain_n as_o before_o verse_n 23._o understanding_n therefore_o shall_v not_o think_v well_o of_o lay_v that_o word_n to_o the_o rest_n he_o have_v his_o answer_n before_o and_o yet_o may_v the_o better_o bear_v it_o also_o because_o it_o be_v do_v for_o evidence_n and_o explanation_n sake_n neither_o shall_v any_o man_n think_v this_o short_a kind_n of_o speak_v strange_a since_o it_o be_v usual_a in_o our_o own_o tongue_n and_o very_o rife_a and_o common_a with_o the_o apostle_n as_o in_o other_o his_o writing_n so_o in_o this_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n for_o proof_n whereof_o the_o learned_a reader_n may_v look_v upon_o rom._n 5.3.11_o rom._n 9.10_o but_o we_o also_o i_o take_v it_o to_o be_v as_o much_o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v even_o we_o ourselves_o do_v perform_v the_o selfsame_a duty_n that_o the_o rest_n of_o the_o creature_n do_v although_o as_o be_v say_v before_o in_o a_o more_o excellent_a sort_n and_o manner_n &_o that_o this_o shall_v be_v the_o apostle_n meaning_n we_o have_v not_o only_o this_o reason_n for_o it_o because_o they_o do_v it_o not_o by_o other_o neither_o indeed_o can_v other_o beside_o they_o perform_v it_o for_o they_o but_o also_o because_o the_o apostle_n himself_o do_v thy_o god_n with_o all_o thy_o heart_n with_o all_o thy_o soul_n and_o with_o all_o thy_o mind_n we_o know_v and_o confess_v that_o we_o have_v nothing_o more_o excellent_a than_o our_o inward_a teach_v we_o not_o only_o how_o unapte_v and_o unable_a we_o be_v to_o the_o performance_n of_o good_a and_o holy_a duty_n before_o he_o a_o matter_n which_o ought_v to_o humble_v we_o great_o in_o who_o if_o they_o have_v companion_n with_o they_o in_o their_o affliction_n do_v more_o comfortable_o for_o the_o most_o part_n and_o patient_o carry_v the_o same_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o a_o burden_n divide_v be_v more_o easy_a and_o light_a than_o when_o the_o whole_a weight_n of_o it_o lie_v all_o upon_o one_o man_n shoulder_n that_o therefore_o we_o shall_v much_o more_o comfort_v
