meekness_n of_o spirit_n the_o spirit_n that_o dwellethin_v we_o before_o we_o be_v humble_v lust_v after_o envy_n jam._n 4._o 5._o now_o every_o natural_a man_n be_v so_o but_o he_o that_o be_v of_o a_o break_a heart_n envy_v not_o he_o spend_v his_o â—nger_n on_o himself_o and_o look_n to_o his_o own_o offence_n so_o much_o that_o he_o regard_v not_o other_o but_o some_o man_n will_v here_o be_v ready_a to_o object_n and_o say_v object_n my_o nature_n be_v hasty_a and_o i_o can_v suppress_v it_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v answ._n it_o be_v true_a every_o one_o by_o nature_n be_v a_o lion_n smooth_a humility_n which_o prepare_v for_o christ_n dig_v down_o those_o high_a mountain_n and_o make_v plain_a those_o rough_a way_n i_o deny_v not_o but_o that_o sometime_o god_n child_n may_v have_v a_o passion_n of_o anger_n yet_o the_o peace_n of_o god_n rule_v in_o his_o heart_n although_o that_o sometime_o break_v out_o as_o a_o rebel_n but_o it_o dwell_v not_o in_o he_o christ_n be_v meek_a and_o so_o be_v all_o he_o and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o three_o question_n now_o to_o proceed_v further_o in_o the_o explication_n of_o humiliation_n and_o come_v to_o the_o four_o question_n which_o be_v this_o whether_o this_o humiliation_n must_v be_v in_o all_o man_n 4._o as_o well_o in_o those_o which_o be_v well_o educate_v and_o have_v fall_v into_o no_o gross_a sin_n as_o in_o other_o i_o answer_v answ._n yes_o it_o must_v be_v in_o all_o even_o this_o great_a humiliation_n here_o speak_v of_o else_o let_v they_o go_v never_o so_o far_o they_o will_v in_o the_o end_n fall_v away_o and_o that_o be_v the_o very_a reason_n why_o so_o many_o professor_n that_o have_v give_v up_o their_o name_n to_o follow_v christ_n fall_v away_o because_o they_o be_v never_o humble_v sound_o for_o sin_n yet_o there_o be_v this_o difference_n betwixt_o the_o humiliation_n of_o one_o bring_v up_o well_o sinner_n and_o a_o gross_a sinner_n 1._o the_o filth_n of_o sin_n be_v not_o so_o sudden_o reveal_v to_o those_o that_o have_v be_v well_o bring_v up_o and_o have_v some_o knowledge_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v not_o so_o sudden_o smite_v as_o to_o those_o that_o live_v in_o ignorance_n all_o their_o life_n long_o those_o that_o have_v a_o light_n on_o the_o sudden_a it_o present_o amaze_v they_o even_o so_o god_n strike_v down_o sudden_o the_o gross_a sinner_n and_o amaze_v he_o with_o a_o more_o violent_a sorrow_n and_o humiliation_n than_o he_o do_v the_o other_o 2._o the_o joy_n be_v not_o so_o sudden_a nor_o flash_a nor_o sensible_a in_o he_o that_o have_v more_o knowledge_n the_o medicine_n be_v know_v to_o he_o as_o soon_o as_o the_o wound_n he_o know_v christ_n a_o saviour_n offer_v up_o for_o all_o that_o be_v wound_v for_o sin_n and_o so_o as_o soon_o as_o he_o feel_v the_o wound_n he_o apply_v the_o medicine_n so_o be_v not_o his_o trouble_n so_o irksome_a neither_o be_v deliver_v have_v he_o such_o sensible_a joy_n for_o instance_n suppose_v a_o man_n be_v in_o the_o way_n wound_v among_o thief_n and_o almost_o kill_v so_o that_o he_o see_v no_o mean_n of_o life_n if_o one_o a_o friend_n of_o he_o on_o the_o sudden_a shall_v step_v forth_o and_o help_v he_o he_o will_v be_v more_o sensible_a of_o it_o than_o such_o a_o one_o as_o know_v before_o he_o shall_v be_v rob_v get_v company_n to_o go_v with_o he_o and_o so_o escape_v the_o danger_n and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o four_o question_n the_o five_o question_n be_v this_o 5._o what_o be_v the_o least_o degree_n of_o humiliation_n that_o must_v be_v in_o one_o that_o will_v be_v save_v i_o answer_v it_o be_v so_o much_o as_o will_v bring_v we_o home_o to_o christ_n answ._n that_o be_v so_o much_o as_o will_v make_v we_o apprehend_v sin_n to_o be_v the_o in_o the_o world_n 2._o in_o steadfast_o lay_v hold_n of_o christ_n and_o believe_v in_o he_o so_o that_o we_o will_v not_o part_v with_o he_o for_o any_o thing_n in_o the_o world_n 3._o in_o a_o newness_n of_o life_n walk_v in_o obedience_n to_o all_o his_o commandment_n and_o therefore_o christ_n say_v john_n 16._o he_o will_v send_v the_o comforter_n to_o convince_v the_o world_n of_o sin_n and_o righteousness_n first_o to_o humble_a for_o sin_n and_o in_o this_o also_o there_o be_v degree_n for_o here_o one_o may_v be_v humble_v more_o than_o another_o and_o so_o thirst_v after_o christ_n more_o but_o the_o more_o we_o be_v humble_v the_o better_a we_o be_v humble_v it_o be_v a_o sign_n god_n have_v a_o great_a work_n to_o do_v by_o we_o when_o we_o be_v thus_o humble_v it_o be_v a_o great_a fault_n in_o we_o that_o we_o be_v prone_a to_o think_v that_o we_o be_v humble_v enough_o and_o that_o our_o humiliation_n at_o our_o first_o conversion_n be_v enough_o no_o belove_v our_o humiliation_n must_v not_o be_v like_o a_o land-flood_n that_o run_v but_o for_o a_o little_a time_n but_o like_o a_o spring_n run_v continual_o for_o all_o degree_n in_o grace_n depend_v on_o god_n mortification_n of_o our_o lust_n etc._n etc._n depend_v on_o the_o degree_n of_o our_o humiliation_n and_o he_o that_o be_v the_o most_o humble_a will_v be_v much_o more_o if_o he_o see_v himself_o to_o be_v the_o better_a and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o five_o question_n the_o six_o question_n be_v this_o 6._o how_o shall_v we_o come_v to_o be_v thus_o humble_v i_o answer_v answ._n by_o sin_n for_o our_o full_a understanding_n of_o it_o i_o will_v show_v you_o these_o five_o thing_n 1._o what_o this_o death_n be_v 2._o the_o kind_n of_o this_o death_n 3._o the_o sign_n of_o this_o death_n 4._o the_o degree_n of_o this_o death_n 5._o the_o use_n to_o be_v make_v of_o it_o be_v first_o what_o this_o death_n be_v to_o know_v this_o we_o must_v understand_v that_o as_o a_o corporal_a death_n death_n so_o a_o spiritual_a death_n have_v two_o thing_n in_o it_o first_o as_o in_o the_o natural_a death_n there_o be_v a_o privation_n of_o life_n when_o the_o soul_n be_v separate_v from_o the_o body_n so_o in_o the_o spiritual_a death_n there_o be_v a_o privation_n of_o the_o life_n of_o the_o soul_n namely_o the_o extinction_n of_o original_a righteousness_n by_o reason_n of_o which_o a_o man_n can_v neither_o set_v hand_n nor_o foot_n forward_o in_o the_o way_n of_o goodness_n as_o paul_n confess_v of_o himself_o for_o as_o the_o separation_n of_o the_o soul_n make_v the_o body_n to_o die_v so_o the_o extinction_n of_o original_a righteousness_n make_v the_o soul_n to_o die_v second_o as_o in_o the_o death_n of_o the_o body_n there_o be_v a_o stink_a carcase_n leave_v when_o the_o soul_n be_v depart_v thence_o so_o in_o the_o death_n of_o the_o soul_n there_o be_v a_o positive_a corrupt_a quality_n leave_v call_v the_o flesh_n whereby_o a_o man_n be_v prone_a to_o do_v all_o evil_a and_o therefore_o they_o be_v call_v dead_a work_n call_v therefore_o leave_v the_o principle_n of_o the_o doctrine_n of_o christ_n let_v we_o go_v on_o unto_o perfection_n not_o lay_v again_o the_o foundation_n of_o repentance_n from_o dead_a work_n etc._n etc._n heb._n 6._o 1._o and_o so_o again_o in_o the_o 9_o chapter_n of_o the_o same_o epistle_n and_o 15._o verse_n where_o it_o be_v say_v how_o much_o more_o shall_v the_o blood_n of_o christ_n who_o through_o the_o eternal_a spirit_n offer_v himself_o without_o spot_n to_o god_n purge_v your_o conscience_n from_o dead_a work_n to_o serve_v the_o live_a god_n now_o it_o seem_v a_o contradiction_n that_o they_o shall_v be_v work_n and_o yet_o dead_a but_o yet_o it_o be_v so_o because_o beside_o the_o privation_n of_o good_a there_o be_v a_o positive_a evil_n and_o stir_a quality_n which_o be_v active_a and_o bring_v forth_o these_o evil_a and_o dead_a work_n now_o for_o the_o some_o man_n many_o excellent_a moral_a virtue_n such_o as_o even_o the_o godly_a themselves_o have_v not_o indeed_o it_o be_v true_a that_o they_o have_v virtue_n and_o these_o be_v god_n gift_n this_o death_n 4._o to_o come_v to_o the_o degree_n of_o this_o death_n first_o guilt_n for_o the_o death_n of_o guilt_n that_o have_v degree_n some_o man_n be_v more_o bind_v over_o than_o other_o as_o the_o heathen_a man_n that_o be_v guide_v only_o by_o the_o light_n of_o nature_n they_o indeed_o be_v guilty_a but_o the_o jew_n which_o have_v a_o more_o perfect_a knowledge_n they_o be_v more_o guilty_a than_o they_o and_o now_o we_o that_o live_v under_o the_o tropic_n of_o the_o gospel_n and_o have_v sermon_n upon_o sermon_n line_n upon_o line_n and_o every_o day_n be_v instruct_v privation_n of_o life_n indeed_o there_o be_v no_o degree_n but_o all_o that_o be_v dead_a in_o regard_n of_o the_o privation_n and_o absence_n of_o original_a righteousness_n be_v all_o dead_a alike_o 2._o but_o for_o the_o second_o to_o wit_n the_o positive_a corrupt_a quality_n which_o be_v call_v the_o flesh_n that_o admit_v degree_n for_o one_o may_v be_v mad_a and_o drink_v both_o alike_o but_o the_o one_o may_v have_v some_o spark_n of_o reason_n more_o than_o the_o other_o the_o degree_n therefore_o of_o this_o death_n first_o be_v these_o three_o that_o follow_v 1._o when_o man_n do_v oppose_v and_o set_v themselves_o against_o a_o holy_a life_n although_o it_o be_v close_o and_o covert_o under_o other_o name_n for_o against_o they_o direct_o the_o devil_n will_v not_o speak_v because_o the_o know_v it_o will_v not_o be_v regard_v but_o he_o speak_v against_o they_o under_o name_n of_o reproach_n which_o he_o himself_o have_v invent_v these_o man_n be_v one_o of_o the_o bottom_n stair_n of_o the_o chamber_n of_o death_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v almost_o impossible_a they_o shall_v ever_o rise_v but_o must_v needs_o remain_v in_o a_o pitiful_a case_n although_o it_o may_v be_v they_o think_v far_o otherwise_o 2._o when_o man_n be_v give_v up_o to_o voluptuousness_n and_o sensuality_n second_o as_o paul_n speak_v of_o the_o wanton_a widow_n 1._o tim._n 5._o 6._o that_o because_o she_o live_v in_o voluptuousness_n she_o be_v dead_a while_o she_o live_v even_o so_o the_o more_o a_o man_n be_v sink_v into_o voluptuous_a course_n the_o more_o he_o be_v dead_a and_o as_o it_o be_v bury_v in_o his_o corruption_n so_o that_o he_o be_v altogether_o unable_a to_o stir_v out_o of_o they_o it_o be_v a_o very_a difficult_a thing_n to_o leave_v they_o three_o as_o in_o the_o sin_n of_o uncleanness_n 3._o when_o we_o be_v indifferent_a and_o care_v not_o how_o thing_n go_v and_o this_o be_v when_o a_o man_n be_v addict_v unto_o the_o death_n of_o civil_a man_n which_o be_v a_o degree_n near_o to_o life_n yet_o be_v true_o and_o indeed_o no_o better_o than_o a_o death_n such_o as_o have_v much_o restrain_v grace_n these_o be_v near_o the_o gate_n of_o heaven_n than_o other_o yet_o they_o be_v as_o true_o shut_v out_o as_o they_o that_o be_v further_a off_o it_o be_v no_o matter_n how_o near_o they_o be_v to_o heaven_n since_o they_o be_v all_o out_o of_o heaven_n alike_o they_o shall_v be_v sure_a if_o never_o any_o more_o quicken_v to_o go_v to_o hell_n as_o well_o as_o other_o three_o joy_n the_o death_n that_o be_v oppose_v to_o the_o life_n of_o joy_n and_o comfort_n that_o have_v also_o degree_n god_n sometime_o withdraw_v his_o comfort_n from_o some_o more_o than_o other_o and_o so_o suffer_v some_o to_o have_v less_o horror_n than_o other_o thus_o i_o have_v brief_o explain_v this_o death_n in_o which_o all_o man_n natural_o be_v i_o will_v now_o answer_v a_o objection_n of_o bellarmine_n against_o that_o which_o have_v be_v say_v and_o so_o come_v to_o the_o five_o thing_n some_o there_o be_v that_o say_v object_n if_o all_o man_n be_v dead_a in_o sin_n as_o you_o say_v they_o be_v then_o to_o what_o end_n be_v all_o our_o preach_v and_o your_o hear_n for_o the_o dead_a be_v without_o life_n and_o can_v be_v move_v with_o any_o of_o these_o thing_n and_o therefore_o they_o be_v all_o in_o vain_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v 1_o first_o that_o although_o every_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v dead_a unto_o grace_n yet_o he_o have_v the_o lifâ—_n of_o reason_n in_o sin_n whereby_o he_o be_v able_a to_o perceive_v two_o thing_n 1._o to_o see_v that_o they_o be_v dead_a and_o without_o this_o life_n of_o grace_n their_o conscience_n tell_v they_o so_o 2._o by_o the_o sight_n and_o feel_n of_o their_o death_n they_o be_v able_a to_o bring_v themselves_o to_o the_o mean_n of_o life_n as_o to_o the_o word_n and_o sacrament_n second_o i_o answer_v 2._o that_o though_o all_o man_n be_v dead_a yet_o there_o be_v a_o end_n and_o effect_n of_o our_o speak_n and_o their_o hear_n for_o the_o word_n that_o we_o speak_v may_v put_v life_n into_o they_o as_o the_o word_n that_o christ_n speak_v unto_o lazarus_n be_v able_a to_o raise_v he_o from_o the_o dead_a three_o death_n we_o must_v know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o this_o spiritual_a death_n and_o the_o corporal_a death_n for_o this_o death_n consist_v in_o the_o understanding_n and_o will_n and_o be_v a_o free_a willing_a death_n in_o it_o they_o free_o sly_a good_a and_o embrace_v evil_a they_o free_o choose_v the_o way_n of_o death_n and_o therefore_o be_v say_v to_o be_v already_o dead_a as_o suppose_v a_o man_n be_v resolve_v to_o commit_v murder_n or_o treason_n and_o a_o friend_n come_v to_o he_o and_o persuade_v he_o from_o it_o and_o can_v prevail_v that_o man_n may_v be_v say_v to_o be_v dead_a because_o he_o will_v do_v that_o that_o will_v cost_v he_o his_o life_n even_o so_o we_o may_v affirm_v that_o that_o man_n be_v dead_a already_o because_o he_o will_v do_v that_o that_o will_v bring_v death_n after_o the_o do_v of_o it_o 5._o point_n now_o for_o the_o five_o thing_n the_o use_n of_o this_o point_n that_o all_o man_n by_o nature_n be_v dead_a in_o sin_n the_o first_o use_v then_o that_o we_o may_v make_v of_o this_o point_n 1._o be_v if_o all_o man_n be_v dead_a in_o sin_n then_o let_v we_o be_v exhort_v not_o to_o defer_v our_o repentance_n repentance_n say_v we_o will_v repent_v afterward_o this_o be_v a_o fault_n usual_a among_o young_a man_n and_o such_o as_o presume_v of_o their_o strength_n and_o ability_n of_o nature_n to_o live_v a_o great_a while_n they_o find_v nature_n strong_a in_o they_o and_o therefore_o put_v off_o repentance_n till_o they_o be_v sick_a and_o age_n bring_v they_o to_o think_v of_o death_n but_o let_v such_o consider_v that_o they_o be_v dead_a already_o and_o repentance_n be_v a_o put_n of_o a_o new_a life_n into_o they_o do_v thou_o think_v it_o be_v in_o thy_o power_n to_o create_v a_o new_a life_n in_o thou_o when_o thou_o be_v dead_a sure_o repentance_n no_o more_o be_v it_o in_o thy_o power_n to_o repent_v when_o thou_o will_v hereby_o the_o devil_n entrap_v many_o in_o put_v this_o conceit_n into_o they_o that_o they_o may_v repent_v when_o they_o will_v and_o this_o he_o bring_v they_o unto_o by_o make_v they_o to_o mistake_v repentance_n in_o conceive_v of_o it_o to_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o sorrow_n for_o sin_n past_a and_o a_o purpose_n to_o live_v well_o afterward_o and_o leave_v all_o sin_n he_o never_o tell_v they_o nor_o they_o never_o think_v that_o it_o be_v the_o creation_n of_o a_o new_a life_n in_o they_o for_o than_o they_o will_v say_v more_o but_o they_o be_v decejue_v this_o be_v not_o to_o repent_v for_o thou_o may_v do_v all_o this_o and_o yet_o when_o thou_o have_v do_v be_v damn_v
but_o such_o repentance_n as_o will_v save_v thy_o soul_n be_v be_v a_o sorrow_n for_o they_o sin_n that_o be_v past_a and_o a_o purpose_n for_o the_o time_n to_o come_v to_o endeavour_v to_o leave_v all_o sin_n arise_v out_o of_o a_o love_n to_o god_n for_o all_o repentance_n arise_v either_o out_o of_o a_o love_n of_o god_n or_o else_o from_o self-love_n if_o it_o be_v out_o of_o a_o love_n of_o god_n thou_o will_v present_o give_v thyself_o unto_o his_o service_n and_o forsake_v thy_o sin_n if_o it_o be_v not_o out_o of_o love_n to_o god_n but_o out_o of_o self-love_n that_o thou_o purpose_v to_o forsake_v thy_o sin_n than_o it_o be_v not_o true_a repentance_n bâ—â—_n false_a and_o rise_v from_o by-respect_n repentance_n be_v hard_o to_o be_v have_v it_o be_v not_o in_o thy_o own_o power_n except_o god_n breathe_v a_o new_a life_n into_o thou_o thou_o can_v not_o repent_v thou_o be_v as_o the_o red_a clod_n of_o earth_n before_o god_n of_o which_o he_o make_v adam_n it_o have_v no_o life_n until_o he_o breathe_v into_o it_o so_o while_o the_o spirit_n breathe_v in_o we_o we_o be_v dead_a a_o beast_n may_v desire_v his_o own_o life_n so_o may_v a_o man_n his_o own_o salvation_n but_o he_o can_v do_v nothing_o without_o the_o spirit_n blow_v when_o then_o the_o spirit_n blow_v why_o will_v thou_o be_v so_o foolish_a as_o to_o defer_v thy_o repentance_n unto_o another_o time_n if_o a_o man_n upon_o pain_n of_o death_n be_v within_o twenty_o day_n to_o be_v beyond_o the_o sea_n simile_n if_o the_o wind_n shall_v blow_v well_o for_o his_o purpose_n the_o first_o second_o or_o three_o day_n will_v he_o be_v so_o foolish_a as_o to_o neglect_v it_o and_o defer_v his_o journey_n and_o say_v it_o may_v be_v it_o will_v blow_v again_o ten_o day_n hence_o and_o then_o i_o will_v go_v no_o he_o will_v not_o be_v so_o foolish_a for_o he_o know_v the_o wind_n blow_v where_o and_o when_o it_o list_v and_o therefore_o he_o will_v take_v it_o when_o it_o blow_v lest_o it_o blow_v there_o no_o more_o in_o these_o earthly_a thing_n man_n be_v not_o so_o foolish_a why_o therefore_o be_v they_o so_o ignorant_a in_o this_o point_n of_o spiritual_a wisdom_n heart_n thou_o be_v damn_v therefore_o when_o it_o do_v blow_v suppose_v it_o be_v at_o 17._o or_o 18._o year_n of_o age_n neglect_v it_o not_o omit_v it_o not_o neither_o defer_v it_o it_o may_v be_v it_o will_v never_o blow_v again_o and_o thou_o can_v not_o make_v it_o blow_v when_o thou_o will_v for_o it_o be_v free_a there_o be_v none_o which_o live_v under_o the_o gospel_n but_o at_o some_o time_n or_o other_o have_v have_v some_o blast_n of_o the_o spirit_n but_o in_o some_o it_o vanish_v as_o bubble_n in_o the_o water_n but_o let_v we_o take_v heed_n of_o that_o and_o unless_o we_o can_v have_v they_o again_o when_o we_o will_v let_v we_o not_o let_v they_o pass_v when_o thou_o have_v but_o the_o least_o spark_n let_v it_o not_o go_v out_o leave_v it_o not_o till_o it_o be_v trespass_n and_o sin_n this_o shall_v teach_v we_o how_o to_o esteem_v of_o civil_a man_n and_o such_o like_a we_o shall_v esteem_v of_o such_o man_n as_o of_o dead_a man_n and_o therefore_o 1_o we_o shall_v not_o overvalue_v they_o 2_o we_o shall_v not_o make_v they_o our_o companion_n first_o we_o shall_v not_o overvalue_v they_o for_o their_o beauty_n they_o have_v none_o that_o be_v true_a beauty_n what_o beauty_n have_v dead_a man_n in_o they_o they_o be_v dead_a let_v we_o not_o regard_v their_o seem_a beauty_n esteem_v the_o poor_a saint_n for_o they_o though_o never_o so_o mean_a a_o break_a heart_n be_v please_v â—nto_o he_o and_o therefore_o whatsoever_o you_o have_v do_v from_o a_o break_a heart_n be_v accept_v of_o god_n but_o here_o satan_n deceive_v man_n with_o gild_a thing_n namely_o formal_a performance_n of_o holy_a 〈◊〉_d which_o when_o they_o need_v they_o as_o in_o the_o day_n of_o 〈◊〉_d or_o trouble_n stand_v they_o in_o no_o stead_n as_o often_o he_o humiliation_n do_v consist_v 2_o what_o kind_n of_o sorrow_n be_v require_v in_o this_o humiliation_n 3_o how_o we_o shall_v know_v whether_o our_o sorrow_n be_v true_a or_o not_o the_o first_o question_n be_v 1._o wherein_o consist_v this_o true_a humiliation_n i_o answer_v answ._n in_o three_o thing_n 1._o in_o see_v your_o life_n to_o abound_v with_o acutall_a sin_n consist_v then_o in_o look_v into_o your_o heart_n and_o nature_n which_o be_v whole_o corrupt_v sin_n and_o the_o root_n of_o all_o evil_a and_o where_o your_o corruption_n be_v strong_a as_o fire_n in_o the_o root_n many_o labour_n to_o excuse_v their_o sin_n from_o their_o nature_n because_o that_o that_o be_v prone_a unto_o it_o but_o that_o make_v their_o cause_n the_o worse_o it_o increase_v their_o vildness_n for_o why_o have_v thou_o such_o a_o nature_n and_o do_v not_o curb_v it_o beside_o their_o nature_n be_v odious_a to_o god_n though_o they_o never_o shall_v break_v out_o as_o a_o serpent_n be_v odious_a unto_o we_o though_o he_o never_o hurt_v we_o further_o consider_v have_v thou_o not_o make_v thy_o nature_n worse_o every_o sin_n thou_o have_v commit_v make_v it_o worse_o for_o actual_a sin_n do_v more_o increase_v the_o custom_n and_o habit_n of_o sin_n so_o that_o beside_o adam_n sin_n thou_o thyself_o be_v guilty_a of_o corrupt_v thy_o own_o nature_n 2._o in_o consider_v that_o there_o be_v nothing_o in_o thou_o that_o be_v good_a at_o all_o thou_o so_o the_o apostle_n say_v rom._n 7._o 18._o for_o i_o know_v that_o in_o i_o dwell_v no_o good_a thing_n 8._o the_o other_o sorrow_n not_o arise_v from_o this_o convince_a of_o the_o judgement_n be_v but_o a_o passion_n and_o so_o be_v straight_o go_v this_o be_v a_o affection_n and_o so_o be_v more_o permanent_a although_o it_o be_v still_a as_o the_o deep_a water_n be_v ever_o still_a and_o so_o much_o for_o the_o second_o question_n the_o three_o question_n be_v 3._o how_o shall_v he_o know_v whether_o these_o sorrow_n of_o his_o be_v true_a or_o no_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v answ._n there_o be_v a_o humiliation_n not_o deep_a enough_o sorrow_n a_o sleight_n humiliation_n and_o there_o be_v another_o too_o deep_a which_o so_o drown_v we_o in_o sorrow_n that_o it_o take_v away_o all_o hope_n of_o salvation_n and_o bring_v despair_n such_o be_v the_o sorrow_n of_o judas_n and_o achitophel_n but_o the_o three_o and_o true_a be_v a_o indifferent_a between_o both_o sometime_o there_o may_v be_v a_o humiliation_n and_o no_o grace_n as_o there_o may_v be_v a_o plow_a and_o no_o sow_v sorrow_n but_o true_a humiliation_n differ_v from_o other_o sorrow_n thus_o first_o in_o the_o rice_n of_o it_o both_o a_o godly_a man_n and_o a_o hypocrite_n may_v rise_n first_o be_v wound_v with_o god_n wrath_n second_o desire_v freedom_n from_o hell_n but_o into_o the_o godly_a god_n do_v instill_v gracious_a seed_n whereby_o he_o be_v humble_v for_o sin_n as_o well_o as_o hell_n and_o sin_n how_o shall_v they_o know_v they_o be_v sin_n to_o this_o i_o answer_v answ._n the_o spark_n of_o conscience_n will_v glow_v in_o the_o midst_n of_o this_o darkness_n sin_n that_o will_v grudge_v at_o that_o sin_n and_o then_o be_v sure_a it_o be_v a_o know_a sin_n though_o it_o do_v but_o whisper_v against_o it_o if_o therefore_o thy_o conscience_n tell_v thou_o that_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n be_v naught_o and_o to_o be_v avoid_v although_o it_o may_v be_v for_o a_o time_n thou_o may_v keep_v down_o thy_o conscience_n and_o suffer_v it_o not_o to_o speak_v out_o for_o the_o noise_n thy_o lust_n make_v yet_o when_o thou_o shall_v come_v to_o lie_v upon_o thy_o deathbed_n and_o at_o the_o last_o day_n when_o thou_o shall_v appear_v before_o god_n in_o judgement_n then_o for_o certain_a shall_v thou_o find_v these_o to_o be_v sin_n and_o that_o to_o thy_o cost_n thou_o now_o will_v be_v ready_a to_o say_v some_o thing_n and_o put_v away_o thy_o sin_n from_o thou_o but_o that_o will_v not_o serve_v the_o turn_n harken_v therefore_o now_o to_o thy_o conscience_n and_o see_v whether_o that_o do_v not_o tell_v thou_o such_o and_o such_o thing_n be_v sinful_a here_o it_o may_v be_v demand_v object_n a_o godly_a man_n sometime_o may_v have_v a_o scruple_n in_o conscience_n whether_o he_o be_v to_o do_v such_o or_o such_o thing_n now_o therefore_o wherein_o lie_v the_o difference_n between_o the_o scruple_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o ignorance_n of_o the_o wicked_a to_o this_o i_o answer_v answ._n indeed_o there_o be_v a_o great_a difference_n between_o the_o scruple_n of_o the_o godly_a and_o the_o ignorance_n that_o be_v in_o the_o wicked_a godly_a and_o the_o murmur_a and_o accuse_v of_o a_o guilty_a conscience_n there_o be_v three_o sign_n whereby_o they_o may_v be_v discern_v 1_o for_o the_o guilty_a conscience_n when_o he_o lie_v in_o a_o know_a sin_n 1._o and_o his_o conscience_n tell_v he_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n he_o make_v no_o inquiry_n after_o it_o it_o but_o he_o find_v such_o a_o sweetness_n in_o it_o that_o his_o heart_n be_v engage_v to_o it_o he_o can_v speak_v against_o it_o nay_o he_o resolve_v to_o sin_n yea_o and_o whensoever_o he_o be_v reprove_v for_o it_o he_o be_v very_o angry_a but_o on_o the_o contrary_a side_n for_o he_o that_o have_v a_o scruple_n in_o conscience_n may_v he_o but_o be_v inform_v of_o matter_n if_o it_o be_v a_o hard_a knot_n and_o question_n than_o it_o may_v be_v in_o a_o good_a man_n and_o such_o a_o one_o shall_v gather_v the_o sound_a and_o best_a reason_n and_o see_v what_o side_n be_v most_o probable_a and_o that_o he_o must_v follow_v but_o on_o the_o contrary_a side_n if_o it_o be_v a_o easy_a matter_n of_o morality_n than_o thou_o be_v the_o more_o to_o be_v suspect_v for_o the_o moral_a law_n be_v ingraft_v into_o our_o heart_n for_o a_o instance_n if_o it_o be_v about_o the_o neglect_n of_o the_o sabbath_n or_o about_o company_n keep_v and_o the_o like_a the_o conscience_n that_o be_v a_o virgin_n and_o never_o will_v be_v corrupt_v that_o will_v tell_v thou_o these_o thing_n and_o persuade_v thou_o of_o they_o indeed_o sometime_o thou_o may_v have_v a_o sear_a conscience_n past_a feeling_n and_o then_o when_o once_o thy_o conscience_n have_v do_v tell_v of_o thou_o than_o thou_o be_v in_o a_o pitiful_a case_n 3_o 3._o thou_o may_v discern_v of_o they_o by_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o action_n action_n if_o they_o have_v a_o good_a conscience_n they_o will_v be_v trouble_v about_o that_o and_o the_o rest_n of_o their_o life_n will_v be_v good_a but_o thou_o may_v quick_o gather_v whether_o it_o be_v a_o rage_a sin_n or_o no_o for_o than_o they_o will_v do_v all_o thing_n on_o the_o other_o side_n and_o one_o know_v sin_n draw_v on_o another_o and_o the_o falseness_n of_o their_o heart_n will_v be_v discern_v in_o other_o thing_n also_o for_o one_o reign_v sin_n be_v like_a to_o a_o disease_n that_o weaken_v all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o body_n for_o even_o so_o that_o weaken_v all_o the_o faculty_n of_o the_o soul_n and_o so_o much_o of_o the_o first_o question_n the_o second_o question_n be_v this_o quest._n he_o that_o be_v a_o carnal_a man_n may_v say_v i_o do_v many_o good_a thing_n as_o well_o as_o other_o and_o although_o i_o do_v sometime_o sin_v yet_o i_o allow_v not_o myself_o therein_o and_o what_o can_v a_o godly_a man_n do_v or_o say_v more_o to_o this_o i_o answer_v answ._n godly_a man_n and_o wicked_a may_v go_v far_o together_o differ_v but_o in_o themselves_o they_o differ_v much_o therefore_o first_o i_o will_v show_v how_o far_o they_o may_v be_v say_v to_o agree_v and_o differ_v and_o second_o how_o they_o may_v be_v discern_v 1._o journey_n in_o these_o thing_n they_o agree_v and_o differ_v first_o both_o may_v agree_v in_o the_o way_n and_o yet_o differ_v in_o the_o end_n their_o journey_n end_n may_v be_v 2._o several_a place_n for_o the_o end_n of_o all_o that_o a_o godly_a man_n do_v be_v the_o glory_n of_o god_n but_o the_o good_a which_o a_o wicked_a man_n do_v be_v either_o out_o of_o some_o present_a fear_n or_o hope_v or_o flash_n of_o conscience_n or_o for_o some_o by-respect_n so_o that_o in_o all_o he_o aim_v most_o at_o his_o own_o profit_n it_o proceed_v not_o from_o the_o inward_a man_n a_o new_a regenerate_v heart_n as_o it_o do_v in_o the_o godly_a simile_n for_o example_n suppose_v a_o man_n travel_v and_o by_o chance_n fall_v into_o london_n road_n because_o it_o be_v coincident_a with_o his_o way_n and_o not_o because_o his_o journey_n lie_v to_o london_n but_o only_o for_o that_o be_v his_o ready_a and_o perhaps_o clean_a way_n now_o we_o can_v say_v that_o man_n tend_v to_o london_n for_o all_o that_o because_o here_o the_o denomination_n be_v take_v from_o the_o utmost_a end_n of_o his_o journey_n 2._o evil_a they_o both_o agree_v and_o differ_v for_o the_o disapprove_v of_o evil_a i_o know_v that_o this_o may_v be_v in_o the_o wicked_a a_o disapprove_v of_o evil_a as_o well_o as_o in_o the_o godly_a wherefore_o we_o be_v to_o know_v that_o there_o be_v a_o twofold_a disapprove_v of_o evil_a 1._o that_o that_o arise_v from_o a_o principle_n nature_n twofold_n in_o conscience_n 2._o from_o a_o true_a principle_n of_o regeneration_n if_o thy_o disallow_v of_o sin_n do_v but_o arise_v from_o a_o natural_a conscience_n that_o be_v nothing_o but_o if_o it_o be_v from_o a_o principle_n of_o regeneration_n that_o be_v from_o a_o new_a disposition_n that_o be_v wrought_v in_o we_o if_o from_o it_o will_v not_o avoid_v the_o occasion_n and_o allurement_n thereto_o sure_o therefore_o this_o man_n have_v no_o purpose_n to_o leave_v sin_n for_o if_o his_o purpose_n be_v not_o put_v in_o practice_n he_o have_v as_o good_a never_o purpose_n for_o it_o have_v no_o effect_n the_o godly_a man_n he_o will_v use_v all_o good_a mean_n to_o further_a his_o intent_n by_o fast_v and_o prayer_n and_o all_o
