way_n first_o by_o the_o cause_n of_o it_o or_o motive_n upon_o which_o second_o by_o the_o term_n from_o which_o and_o to_o which_o we_o turn_v three_o by_o the_o manner_n afffliction_n four_o by_o than_o they_o seek_v to_o he_o and_o then_o they_o will_v turn_v from_o their_o evil_a way_n but_o when_o they_o be_v deliver_v they_o turn_v to_o their_o old_a bias_n again_o so_o pharaoh_n when_o as_o he_o be_v plague_v with_o any_o new_a judgement_n than_o he_o will_v let_v the_o israelite_n go_v but_o as_o soon_o as_o that_o be_v off_o he_o harden_v his_o heart_n and_o will_v not_o let_v they_o go_v as_o also_o a_o second_o cause_n to_o move_v man_n to_o turn_n benefit_n may_v be_v some_o present_a commodity_n this_o do_v appear_v in_o many_o of_o those_o that_o apply_v themselves_o to_o christ_n some_o do_v it_o for_o the_o loaf_n and_o some_o for_o their_o convenient_a live_n some_o for_o the_o hope_n of_o a_o earthly_a kingdom_n which_o they_o think_v he_o will_v have_v bring_v but_o these_o all_o leave_v he_o afterward_o there_o be_v many_o such_o false_a motive_n but_o the_o only_a true_a motive_n be_v take_v from_o the_o apprehension_n of_o eternal_a be_v life_n and_o eternal_a death_n the_o conversion_n be_v not_o right_a till_o then_o and_o the_o reason_n be_v because_o all_o other_o motive_n may_v be_v over_o balance_v but_o the_o motive_n of_o life_n and_o death_n can_v be_v over_o top_v by_o any_o thing_n if_o preferment_n be_v offer_v or_o what_o ever_o the_o world_n can_v offer_v but_o these_o exceed_v all_o that_o satan_n or_o the_o world_n or_o the_o flesh_n can_v suggest_v therefore_o a_o man_n be_v then_o turn_v when_o the_o lord_n shall_v enlarge_v his_o thought_n to_o see_v the_o greatness_n and_o the_o vastness_n of_o these_o two_o for_o then_o all_o those_o other_o thing_n appear_v but_o as_o candle_n in_o the_o sunshine_n so_o that_o if_o satan_n come_v with_o earthly_a honour_n and_o pleasure_n in_o his_o hand_n the_o bring_v into_o straits_n by_o the_o apprehension_n of_o they_o so_o as_o he_o present_a have_v no_o rest_n till_o he_o be_v translate_v into_o another_o condition_n a_o carnal_a man_n on_o his_o death_n bed_n have_v a_o actual_a apprehension_n of_o hell_n as_o present_v be_v strange_o affect_v now_o at_o conversion_n the_o apprehension_n of_o these_o seize_v upon_o a_o man_n by_o a_o work_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o compass_n he_o about_o so_o as_o he_o can_v shake_v it_o off_o till_o he_o turn_v to_o god_n the_o wise_a man_n see_v the_o plague_n before_o hand_n even_o as_o present_v and_o therefore_o stay_v not_o till_o it_o come_v but_o turn_v in_o the_o time_n of_o youth_n health_n and_o strength_n second_o it_o must_v be_v a_o deep_a fix_a and_o settle_a apprehension_n deep_o eternal_a life_n and_o death_n to_o turn_v from_o his_o evil_a way_n without_o a_o apprehension_n of_o sin_n and_o grace_n when_o a_o man_n have_v a_o true_a apprehension_n of_o eternal_a life_n and_o death_n he_o come_v to_o know_v what_o sin_n and_o grace_n grace_n be_v and_o never_o before_o till_o a_o man_n know_v eternal_a death_n he_o look_v on_o sin_n as_o a_o trifle_n as_o a_o thing_n of_o tale_n so_o come_v the_o curse_n and_o strike_v they_o dead_a that_o continue_v not_o in_o all_o thing_n to_o do_v the_o law_n and_o these_o two_o put_v together_o work_v this_o legal_a humiliation_n what_o neither_o by_o the_o law_n be_v mean_v only_o those_o ten_o word_n speak_v in_o horeb_n but_o together_o with_o the_o explanation_n of_o they_o as_o we_o find_v they_o expound_v in_o the_o prophet_n and_o the_o whole_a scripture_n so_o that_o by_o the_o law_n be_v mean_v that_o rectitude_n which_o the_o whole_a scripture_n do_v require_v now_o therefore_o when_o the_o scripture_n be_v lay_v to_o our_o heart_n the_o rectitude_n of_o the_o scripture_n be_v compare_v with_o the_o crookedness_n of_o our_o heart_n and_o life_n and_o thereby_o we_o come_v to_o see_v how_o that_o the_o least_o sin_n be_v forbid_v and_o that_o the_o least_o duty_n must_v not_o be_v omit_v and_o that_o we_o must_v give_v a_o account_n for_o every_o idle_a word_n and_o every_o lustful_a thought_n and_o motion_n in_o the_o heart_n as_o s._n paul_n when_o humble_v see_v lust_n to_o be_v sin_n and_o then_o we_o come_v to_o see_v withal_o the_o curse_n due_a to_o the_o lease_n this_o humble_v a_o man_n and_o unto_o this_o be_v further_a require_v the_o help_n of_o the_o spirit_n join_v therewith_o without_o which_o the_o law_n humiliation_n do_v not_o humble_a a_o man_n who_o be_v therefore_o call_v and_o make_v effectual_a by_o the_o spirit_n yet_o usual_o some_o affliction_n put_v life_n into_o they_o as_o we_o see_v in_o manasses_n and_o also_o in_o s._n paul_n who_o be_v first_o strike_v law_n in_o its_o true_a work_n can_v be_v without_o the_o gospel_n nor_o the_o gospel_n without_o the_o law_n so_o as_o to_o a_o perfect_a work_n of_o the_o gospel_n the_o knowledge_n of_o the_o law_n must_v precede_v whatsoever_o a_o man_n sin_n be_v if_o he_o be_v true_o humble_v for_o they_o and_o forsake_v they_o they_o shall_v be_v forgive_v he_o this_o be_v the_o main_a point_n you_o may_v will_v cause_v a_o man_n to_o seek_v mercy_n but_o this_o to_o seek_v god_n face_n that_o be_v if_o they_o have_v his_o favour_n it_o be_v enough_o they_o seek_v god_n as_o sequester_v from_o all_o thing_n else_o though_o such_o a_o soul_n have_v assurance_n of_o be_v free_v from_o hell_n it_o will_v not_o content_v he_o unless_o he_o see_v god_n face_n that_o which_o absalon_n counterfeit_v humble_v himself_o but_o transgress_v more_o and_o more_o which_o imply_v that_o when_o a_o man_n be_v humble_v as_o he_o shall_v he_o transgress_v no_o more_o as_o he_o have_v do_v and_o so_o manasses_n do_v so_o humble_a himself_o as_o he_o transgress_v no_o more_o it_o will_v make_v he_o become_v strong_a against_o that_o sin_n he_o have_v transgress_v simile_n in_o as_o a_o bone_n that_o other_o be_v defective_a mark_v how_o that_o which_o be_v true_a work_n this_o in_o one_o who_o yet_o be_v not_o quite_o cut_v off_o but_o hang_v by_o a_o thread_n as_o it_o be_v there_o be_v some_o secret_a fibrae_fw-la some_o vein_n and_o string_n that_o be_v not_o cut_v in_o piece_n which_o keep_v life_n in_o the_o old_a man_n and_o a_o man_n remain_v still_o upon_o his_o old_a stock_n and_o so_o long_a christ_n come_v not_o into_o the_o heart_n not_o until_o a_o man_n be_v unbottomed_a of_o himself_o and_o see_v he_o can_v no_o way_n be_v happy_a in_o himself_o or_o within_o his_o own_o compass_n but_o see_v all_o be_v to_o be_v have_v in_o and_o from_o the_o lord_n jesus_n until_o then_o he_o will_v not_o go_v out_o of_o himself_o nor_o cleave_v to_o or_o follow_v the_o lord_n jesus_n christ_n full_o now_o then_o the_o other_o humiliation_n be_v defective_a in_o this_o in_o that_o it_o be_v not_o in_o this_o manner_n enough_o bottom_v it_o cut_v not_o a_o man_n whole_o off_o from_o himself_o the_o foundation_n be_v not_o lay_v low_o enough_o there_o be_v want_v depth_n of_o earth_n there_o be_v indeed_o so_o much_o earth_n as_o shall_v bring_v forth_o a_o green_a blade_n of_o profession_n and_o such_o a_o foundation_n as_o there_o may_v be_v erect_v a_o slight_a build_n upon_o but_o it_o be_v not_o low_a enough_o to_o bear_v a_o substantial_a building_n that_o shall_v stand_v out_o all_o wind_n and_o weather_n this_o true_a humiliation_n have_v these_o two_o thing_n go_v with_o it_o a_o man_n see_v no_o bottom_n in_o himself_o 1_o seethe_v a_o bottom_n out_o of_o himself_o to_o stand_v upon_o humiliation_n and_o so_o he_o cast_v himself_o upon_o that_o clasp_v about_o christ_n and_o whole_o adher_v unto_o he_o and_o so_o draw_v all_o sap_n and_o be_v certain_a they_o will_v thrive_v now_o in_o a_o good_a heart_n those_o desire_n that_o be_v plant_v there_o do_v thrive_v and_o wither_v no_o more_o and_o though_o there_o may_v now_o and_o then_o wave_n arise_v and_o so_o they_o may_v be_v toss_v to_o and_o fro_o yet_o substantial_o they_o do_v not_o wither_v nor_o fall_v from_o the_o foundation_n those_o therefore_o who_o have_v humiliation_n it_o serve_v to_o make_v thou_o willing_a to_o match_v with_o christ_n we_o be_v christ_n spokesman_n and_o woo_v you_o every_o sabbath_n day_n but_o we_o find_v all_o the_o world_n like_o they_o christ._n who_o think_v themselves_o beautiful_a and_o rich_a and_o that_o they_o have_v match_n enough_o who_o though_o they_o be_v content_v to_o have_v christ_n for_o their_o husband_n in_o heaven_n yet_o not_o on_o the_o earth_n with_o all_o those_o cross_n they_o must_v take_v he_o with_o now_o humiliation_n come_v and_o make_v man_n willing_a when_o a_o man_n come_v and_o not_o out_o of_o judgement_n thou_o will_v have_v repent_v thou_o ere_o now_o the_o second_o end_n which_o humiliation_n serve_v to_o be_v for_o sanctification_n as_o the_o other_o help_v he_o in_o his_o justification_n sanctification_n that_o every_o unruly_a lust_n may_v be_v break_v and_o mortify_v in_o thou_o that_o thou_o may_v fear_v to_o offend_v and_o be_v pliable_a to_o the_o lord_n in_o every_o thing_n whereas_o another_o that_o be_v unbroken_a quarrel_n with_o every_o thing_n think_v his_o work_n too_o much_o and_o his_o wage_n too_o little_a and_o know_v not_o why_o he_o shall_v go_v a_o contrary_a way_n to_o the_o world_n but_o a_o humble_a man_n simile_n will_v do_v all_o this_o cheerful_o like_o a_o break_a horse_n that_o turn_v at_o every_o check_n of_o the_o bridle_n when_o another_o cast_v his_o rider_n do_v thou_o find_v that_o thou_o tremble_v at_o the_o word_n and_o fear_v sin_n and_o dare_v not_o venture_v in_o it_o and_o so_o for_o duty_n thou_o dare_v not_o neglect_v they_o and_o this_o thou_o have_v experience_n of_o in_o the_o whole_a course_n of_o thy_o life_n then_o sure_o this_o work_n of_o humiliation_n have_v be_v in_o thy_o heart_n though_o thou_o see_v not_o the_o fire_n yet_o if_o thou_o find_v the_o heat_n it_o have_v be_v there_o for_o these_o be_v the_o effect_n of_o it_o and_o as_o i_o speak_v this_o for_o the_o comfort_n of_o those_o that_o have_v not_o feel_v such_o violent_a sorrow_n so_o let_v i_o on_o the_o contrary_n say_v to_o other_o who_o it_o may_v be_v have_v have_v such_o fit_n of_o sorrow_n yet_o if_o thou_o find_v a_o unwillingnes_n to_o submit_v thus_o to_o christ_n find_v thy_o neck_n stiff_a to_o the_o lord_n yoke_n and_o such_o a_o unbrokennesse_n in_o thou_o that_o thou_o can_v not_o live_v as_o they_o will_v have_v choose_v each_o other_o before_o any_o other_o in_o the_o world_n yet_o so_o as_o this_o their_o love_n may_v admit_v degree_n after_o marriage_n they_o may_v see_v more_o ground_n of_o love_v each_o other_o more_o so_o that_o though_o the_o match_n be_v make_v yet_o they_o may_v be_v more_o confirm_v in_o their_o choice_n which_o may_v be_v make_v more_o full_a and_o absolute_a so_o towards_o christ_n the_o will_n and_o affection_n may_v be_v wind_v up_o to_o a_o high_a peg_n which_o be_v do_v by_o a_o further_a degree_n of_o humiliation_n what_o be_v faith_n but_o a_o lay_v hold_n of_o christ_n now_o the_o empty_a the_o hand_n be_v the_o further_a what_o hold_v it_o take_v and_o the_o more_o we_o be_v take_v off_o our_o own_o bottom_n the_o further_o we_o be_v after_o christ_n and_o you_o will_v drink_v deep_o of_o the_o fountain_n of_o life_n and_o draw_v more_o sap_n from_o he_o and_o second_o it_o increase_v your_o love_n for_o thereby_o love_n we_o the_o heart_n bear_v itself_o upon_o they_o and_o so_o be_v careless_a of_o the_o lord_n and_o why_o else_o do_v affliction_n humble_a man_n as_o manasses_n but_o because_o a_o man_n then_o see_v the_o emptiness_n of_o all_o thing_n it_o bring_v he_o to_o say_v with_o the_o prodigal_n i_o die_v for_o hunger_n and_o these_o can_v feed_v i_o and_o so_o to_o hold_v fast_o to_o the_o lord_n which_o a_o man_n must_v needs_o do_v when_o he_o have_v but_o one_o thing_n to_o hold_v to_o now_o when_o thou_o be_v wrought_v on_o so_o as_o to_o express_v this_o unfeigned_o this_o be_v it_o to_o be_v all_o one_o and_o there_o be_v some_o disease_n you_o know_v wherein_o a_o man_n feel_v not_o so_o much_o pain_n that_o yet_o be_v mortal_a it_o may_v make_v he_o as_o careful_a to_o use_v the_o mean_n and_o so_o be_v it_o here_o if_o the_o conviction_n of_o the_o sinfulness_n and_o deadliness_n of_o sin_n work_v those_o disposition_n mention_v in_o thou_o than_o thou_o have_v the_o end_n which_o mourning_n tend_v to_o and_o that_o be_v all_o one_o though_o thy_o affection_n be_v not_o so_o stir_v consider_v to_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o one_o come_v in_o and_o take_v christ_n and_o believe_v in_o he_o they_o be_v not_o make_v to_o the_o commotion_n of_o the_o affection_n and_o here_o in_o the_o word_n the_o promise_n be_v make_v to_o humble_v thyself_o out_o of_o a_o solidity_n of_o judgement_n it_o be_v no_o matter_n by_o what_o mean_v you_o be_v bring_v to_o take_v hold_n on_o christ_n so_o you_o come_v to_o he_o it_o be_v all_o one_o whether_o i_o come_v to_o and_o i_o be_o sorry_a and_o confess_v it_o etc._n etc._n but_o i_o be_o not_o able_a to_o leave_v it_o and_o yet_o i_o hope_v god_n will_v pardon_v i_o no_o know_v that_o stoppage_n be_v no_o
their_o iniquity_n and_o why_o because_o he_o remember_v they_o be_v but_o flesh_n and_o indeed_o one_o will_v wonder_v how_o the_o lord_n can_v forgive_v so_o obstinate_a a_o people_n that_o have_v such_o experience_n of_o his_o power_n and_o mercy_n by_o those_o great_a work_n which_o he_o wrought_v afore_o they_o in_o bring_v they_o out_o of_o egypt_n yet_o he_o do_v because_o he_o remmebred_a and_o wise_o consider_v what_o ingredient_n go_v to_o make_v up_o their_o nature_n he_o remember_v they_o be_v but_o flesh_n so_o psalm_n 103._o 13_o 14._o 14_o the_o former_a part_n of_o that_o psalm_n be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o expression_n of_o promise_n of_o forgiveness_n and_o in_o the_o 14._o verse_n he_o give_v this_o as_o the_o reason_n of_o all_o for_o he_o know_v our_o frame_n he_o remember_v that_o we_o be_v dust_n 14._o he_o know_v whereof_o we_o be_v make_v and_o therefore_o be_v exceed_o merciful_a 4_o whereas_o there_o be_v one_o attribute_n from_o which_o justice_n that_o blood_n of_o christ_n the_o ransom_n receive_v which_o cleanse_v we_o from_o all_o our_o sin_n 5_o if_o all_o these_o will_v not_o serve_v to_o persuade_v our_o heart_n forgive_v to_o believe_v the_o lord_n descend_v a_o little_a low_o and_o help_v we_o out_o with_o a_o argument_n of_o his_o readiness_n to_o pardon_v from_o the_o consideration_n of_o what_o be_v in_o ourselves_o consider_v how_o you_o will_v deal_v with_o your_o child_n psal._n 103._o 13._o like_a as_o a_o father_n pity_v his_o 13_o child_n so_o the_o lord_n they_o that_o fear_v he_o if_o a_o child_n that_o be_v you_o offend_v you_o a_o hundred_o time_n yet_o if_o he_o come_v in_o and_o humble_a himself_o you_o will_v pardon_v he_o and_o will_v not_o god_n when_o his_o people_n humble_v themselves_o we_o use_v but_o such_o argument_n as_o god_n himself_o do_v and_o do_v but_o set_v he_o and_o your_o conscience_n together_o to_o reason_v the_o case_n but_o you_o will_v object_v again_o and_o say_v it_o be_v possible_a for_o a_o child_n so_o to_o offend_v as_o that_o a_o father_n will_v not_o nor_o can_v forgive_v he_o true_o but_o the_o psalmist_n meaning_n be_v not_o as_o if_o god_n will_v pardon_v no_o more_o than_o a_o earthly_a father_n but_o on_o the_o contrary_a if_o you_o that_o be_v earthly_a father_n can_v do_v so_o much_o i_o that_o be_o a_o infinite_a lord_n god_n and_o not_o man_n can_v do_v much_o more_o who_o be_v omnipotent_a and_o can_v do_v whatsoever_o he_o will_v and_o show_v his_o omnipotency_n in_o pardon_v i_o compare_v with_o this_o isaiah_n 55._o 9_o my_o thought_n be_v place_n he_o compare_v it_o with_o abel_n blood_n so_o here_o with_o the_o blood_n of_o bull_n and_o goat_n which_o in_o the_o old_a law_n serve_v by_o god_n appointment_n for_o the_o outward_a purification_n of_o the_o flesh_n how_o much_o more_o how_o infinite_o transcendent_o more_o above_o our_o thought_n or_o imagination_n shall_v the_o blood_n of_o the_o son_n of_o god_n be_v able_a to_o purge_v your_o conscience_n we_o not_o able_a to_o conceive_v nor_o he_o to_o express_v he_o only_o say_v how_o much_o more_o etc._n etc._n and_o he_o back_v it_o with_o two_o reason_n which_o put_v together_o show_v the_o transcendency_n of_o that_o sufficiency_n in_o christ_n blood_n to_o cleanse_v we_o the_o first_o from_o the_o eternal_a spirit_n whereby_o he_o offer_v up_o himself_o it_o be_v not_o the_o blood_n or_o sacrifice_n of_o a_o mere_a man_n but_o of_o god_n which_o sacrifice_n be_v in_o itself_o without_o spot_n there_o be_v three_o objection_n we_o usual_o make_v against_o sin_n ourselves_o by_o reason_n of_o our_o sin_n 1._o that_o they_o be_v so_o many_o 2._o so_o great_a 3._o that_o they_o be_v reiterated_a and_o often_o fall_v into_o answer_v now_o the_o
