christ_n be_v our_o mediator_n that_o he_o die_v for_o we_o etc._n etc._n beside_o rom._n 4._o he_o speak_v concern_v abraham_n faith_n and_o show_v that_o it_o be_v write_v before_o for_o our_o sake_n and_o equal_o belong_v unto_o all_o the_o faithful_a so_o that_o we_o may_v see_v they_o speak_v of_o no_o proper_a matter_n concern_v themselves_o nor_o in_o these_o place_n allege_v and_o quote_v if_o any_o special_a revelation_n concern_v their_o own_o salvation_n but_o of_o a_o grace_n common_a to_o all_o the_o elect_a of_o god_n &_o there_o before_o this_o exception_n be_v but_o a_o mere_a cavil_n 2_o second_o this_o their_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v stand_v up_o against_o the_o word_n and_o commandment_n of_o god_n call_v upon_o we_o yea_o injoin_v we_o for_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n name_n and_o our_o own_o good_a to_o repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n as_o mark_v 11._o verse_n 15._o repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n as_o also_o against_o those_o sweet_a exhortation_n that_o be_v give_v we_o in_o the_o same_o word_n to_o provoke_v to_o confidence_n and_o religious_a boldness_n as_o that_o of_o hebrew_n 4.16_o let_v we_o therefore_o go_v bold_o unto_o the_o throne_n of_o grace_n that_o we_o may_v receive_v mercy_n and_o find_v grace_n to_o help_v in_o time_n of_o need_n and_o that_o of_o hebr._n 10.22_o let_v we_o draw_v near_o with_o a_o true_a heart_n in_o assurance_n of_o faith_n etc._n etc._n and_o sundry_a such_o like_a as_o as_o these_o for_o first_o look_v whatsoever_o god_n enjoin_v or_o command_v it_o be_v neither_o doubtful_o to_o be_v embrace_v as_o in_o regard_n of_o our_o persuasion_n because_o that_o will_v breed_v neglect_n at_o the_o least_o if_o not_o contempt_n of_o he_o and_o his_o authority_n that_o command_v yea_o indeed_o also_o of_o the_o thing_n itself_o command_v nor_o to_o be_v sluggishlie_o or_o slouthful_o perform_v as_o in_o regard_n of_o our_o practice_n because_o as_o god_n in_o every_o thing_n love_v cheerfulness_n so_o likewise_o in_o the_o obedience_n of_o his_o law_n much_o less_o may_v it_o be_v defer_v and_o put_v of_o both_o because_o time_n be_v not_o our_o own_o &_o we_o have_v no_o charter_n or_o warrant_n of_o our_o life_n no_o not_o for_o one_o minute_n of_o a_o hour_n beside_o who_o know_v not_o that_o these_o thing_n be_v opposite_a one_o of_o they_o to_o another_o namely_o for_o god_n to_o command_v we_o and_o for_o we_o either_o to_o doubt_v of_o himself_o or_o the_o thing_n or_o thing_n that_o he_o prescribe_v for_o if_o he_o be_v god_n he_o must_v be_v believe_v as_o well_o in_o the_o thing_n he_o enjoin_v for_o his_o worship_n and_o our_o obedience_n as_o in_o the_o promise_n he_o propound_v for_o the_o express_v of_o the_o manifold_a riches_n of_o his_o grace_n &_o offer_v strong_a consolation_n to_o our_o distress_a consciecne_n otherwise_o if_o we_o doubt_v he_o or_o distrust_v he_o therein_o we_o rob_v he_o of_o his_o glory_n again_o we_o may_v reason_v for_o the_o better_a confirmation_n of_o this_o point_n from_o the_o true_a meaning_n of_o these_o word_n believe_v the_o gospel_n to_o believe_v the_o gospel_n i_o take_v to_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o to_o be_v right_o persuade_v of_o and_o particular_o to_o apply_v unto_o our_o own_o heart_n those_o promise_n which_o be_v make_v unto_o we_o in_o the_o gospel_n special_o those_o that_o concern_v the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n here_o in_o this_o life_n and_o our_o everlasting_a salvation_n in_o the_o life_n to_o come_v but_o this_o be_v not_o to_o doubt_v but_o certain_o to_o be_v assure_v and_o persuade_v rather_o that_o the_o whole_a gospel_n be_v true_a and_o particular_o this_o part_n of_o it_o that_o christ_n indeed_o be_v the_o saviour_n of_o all_o they_o that_o believe_v in_o he_o for_o faith_n and_o repentance_n must_v be_v preach_v in_o his_o name_n and_o there_o be_v no_o other_o name_n give_v under_o heaven_n wherein_o man_n must_v be_v save_v but_o his_o and_o therefore_o they_o that_o hold_v or_o teach_v otherwise_o do_v not_o only_o not_o know_v what_o it_o be_v to_o believe_v but_o evacuat_a and_o destroy_v faith_n the_o gospel_n christ_n jesus_n and_o al._n sith_o therefore_o they_o that_o do_v true_o believe_v do_v not_o doubt_v concern_v that_o which_o they_o do_v believe_v i_o mean_v for_o the_o time_n manner_n and_o measure_n of_o their_o faith_n for_o i_o be_o not_o ignorant_a of_o this_o that_o that_o which_o be_v strong_a at_o one_o time_n as_o in_o regard_n of_o god_n grace_n and_o spirit_n support_v we_o may_v be_v infirm_a and_o weak_a at_o another_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o the_o remainder_n of_o our_o sin_n and_o the_o dullness_n and_o slowness_n of_o our_o heart_n to_o believe_v it_o will_v well_o yea_o and_o must_v of_o necessity_n follow_v that_o all_o they_o that_o do_v true_o believe_v the_o gospel_n of_o christ_n ought_v not_o at_o any_o hand_n to_o doubt_n or_o distrust_n concern_v god_n goodness_n the_o infinite_a merit_n of_o christ_n obedience_n the_o forgiveness_n of_o their_o sin_n or_o the_o save_n of_o their_o soul_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o doubt_v here_o &_o that_o faith_n that_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o they_o can_v stand_v together_o and_o as_o for_o the_o exhortation_n use_v in_o the_o word_n we_o may_v say_v as_o much_o namely_o that_o god_n mean_v thereby_o to_o stir_v we_o up_o steadfast_o and_o without_o waver_v to_o rely_v upon_o he_o or_o else_o he_o will_v never_o have_v so_o earnest_o call_v upon_o we_o therefore_o or_o provoke_v we_o thereto_o unless_o he_o have_v calling_n approach_v most_o near_o unto_o god_n but_o no_o such_o thing_n have_v be_v or_o ever_o shall_v be_v find_v in_o the_o holy_a one_o of_o israel_n for_o as_o he_o be_v not_o man_n but_o god_n and_o therefore_o judge_v not_o according_a unto_o man_n or_o have_v respect_n of_o person_n so_o he_o can_v lie_v or_o dissemble_v but_o be_v altogether_o good_a and_o holy_a himself_o and_o deliver_v as_o we_o may_v the_o testimony_n and_o token_n of_o his_o love_n towards_o we_o mean_v as_o he_o speak_v so_o shall_v all_o flesh_n find_v it_o whether_o it_o be_v in_o the_o faithful_a promise_n concern_v peace_n and_o life_n or_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o judgement_n in_o this_o world_n or_o that_o which_o be_v to_o come_v three_o this_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v fight_v against_o certainty_n &_o assurance_n of_o all_o such_o promise_n as_o god_n have_v gracious_o give_v we_o special_o those_o that_o he_o have_v make_v unto_o we_o for_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o our_o sin_n &_o the_o good_a of_o they_o that_o belong_v unto_o he_o for_o we_o know_v and_o believe_v he_o to_o be_v both_o willing_a and_o true_a in_o his_o word_n that_o he_o will_v and_o almigtie_a in_o his_o power_n that_o he_o can_v perform_v the_o good_a thing_n promise_v for_o the_o lord_n hand_n be_v not_o shorten_v that_o it_o can_v save_v neither_o be_v his_o ear_n heavy_a that_o it_o can_v hear_v isay_n 59_o and_o be_v there_o not_o reason_n we_o shall_v depend_v upon_o his_o good_a pleasure_n power_n and_o providence_n for_o the_o time_n to_o perform_v his_o promise_n in_o as_o for_o the_o grace_n and_o goodness_n promise_v sure_o there_o be_v for_o as_o all_o thing_n be_v free_a in_o god_n and_o nothing_o draw_v from_o he_o by_o constraint_n so_o since_o he_o see_v and_o know_v what_o and_o when_o and_o where_o be_v better_a for_o we_o than_o we_o ourselves_o unless_o we_o will_v be_v over_o saucy_a &_o malepert_a with_o the_o almighty_a we_o must_v needs_o in_o this_o respect_n also_o depend_v upon_o he_o to_o make_v this_o plain_a by_o one_o particular_a the_o forgiveness_n of_o sin_n be_v promise_v and_o in_o some_o measure_n perform_v in_o this_o life_n but_o the_o full_a fruition_n of_o that_o grace_n in_o all_o the_o part_n and_o piece_n of_o it_o and_o the_o fruit_n follow_v of_o it_o be_v reserve_v for_o the_o world_n or_o life_n to_o come_v howbeit_o he_o perform_v it_o here_o even_o so_o soon_o as_o we_o begin_v to_o believe_v as_o appear_v rom._n 1._o but_o he_o will_v give_v we_o perfect_a righteosnesse_n &_o eternal_a salvation_n when_o the_o time_n fit_a for_o it_o shall_v be_v for_o now_o we_o be_v save_v by_o hope_n romans_z 8._o and_o 1._o john_n 3_o now_o be_v we_o the_o son_n of_o god_n but_o yet_o it_o be_v not_o manifest_v what_o we_o shall_v be_v and_o we_o know_v that_o when_o he_o be_v manifest_v we_o shall_v be_v like_o he_o for_o we_o shall_v see_v he_o as_o he_o be_v but_o enough_o against_o these_o exception_n let_v we_o come_v to_o and_o proceed_v in_o the_o recital_n of_o other_o absurdity_n that_o ensue_v upon_o this_o doctrine_n of_o doubt_v which_o our_o adversary_n will_v so_o stiff_o defend_v 4_o four_o that_o god_n people_n make_v and_o pour_v forth_o before_o god_n and_o that_o according_a to_o his_o will_n for_o the_o comfortable_a feel_n and_o assure_a attainment_n of_o that_o singular_a grace_n first_o christ_n commandment_n say_v after_o this_o manner_n pray_v you_o and_o among_o we_o the_o rest_n teach_v we_o to_o say_v forgive_v we_o our_o debt_n trespass_n or_o sin_n show_v we_o what_o we_o shall_v do_v to_o which_o if_o we_o adjoine_v the_o practice_n of_o god_n people_n we_o shall_v yet_o more_o and_o more_o see_v ourselves_o lead_v thereto_o david_n a_o man_n approve_v of_o god_n psal_n 32._o say_v therefore_o or_o for_o this_o thing_n that_o be_v to_o say_v because_o thou_o show_v thyself_o every_o manner_n of_o way_n to_o be_v such_o a_o one_o to_o i_o &_o special_o in_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o my_o sin_n shall_v every_o one_o that_o be_v godly_a make_v his_o prayer_n unto_o thou_o that_o be_v perform_v prayer_n and_o other_o obedience_n and_o the_o word_n of_o the_o and_o assure_a hope_n be_v most_o necessary_a so_o in_o prayer_n especial_o and_o the_o rather_o because_o therein_o we_o do_v not_o only_o deal_v with_o god_n aloof_o or_o a_o far_o of_o as_o we_o say_v but_o in_o many_o particularity_n and_o god_n we_o know_v have_v command_v not_o only_o that_o we_o shall_v pray_v unto_o he_o but_o also_o have_v forbid_v we_o in_o out_o prayer_n or_o while_o we_o be_v call_v upon_o he_o to_o doubt_v either_o of_o he_o that_o have_v the_o fullness_n of_o power_n &_o good_a will_n in_o he_o for_o his_o own_o glory_n and_o for_o our_o good_a or_o else_o receive_v the_o thing_n that_o we_o shall_v ask_v according_a to_o his_o word_n therefore_o james_n 1_o it_o be_v say_v if_o any_o lack_n wisdom_n let_v he_o ask_v of_o god_n which_o give_v to_o all_o man_n liberal_o and_o reproach_v no_o man_n but_o let_v he_o ask_v in_o faith_n and_o waver_v not_o for_o he_o that_o waver_v be_v like_o a_o wave_n of_o the_o sea_n toss_v of_o the_o wind_n and_o we_o acquaint_v withal_o and_o we_o know_v that_o we_o must_v not_o judge_v of_o this_o matter_n à _fw-la priori_fw-la as_o the_o school_n man_n say_v that_o be_v by_o thing_n go_v before_o for_o we_o know_v they_o not_o but_o by_o thing_n follow_v which_o may_v be_v discern_v because_o they_o be_v describe_v and_o set_v down_o unto_o we_o in_o the_o word_n nor_o yet_o beside_o or_o without_o the_o word_n for_o than_o we_o shall_v wander_v in_o darkness_n more_o gross_a than_o that_o of_o egypt_n &_o be_v overtake_v with_o many_o odd_a and_o swim_a conceit_n but_o we_o must_v out_o of_o the_o word_n &_o by_o consequent_n according_a to_o the_o word_n determine_v of_o the_o matter_n otherwise_o we_o shall_v not_o only_o speak_v at_o adventure_n but_o fail_n because_o there_o &_o not_o else_o where_o god_n have_v for_o this_o and_o all_o other_o matter_n &_o mystery_n plain_o and_o plentiful_o reveal_v his_o will_n and_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o even_o the_o write_n before_o the_o law_n be_v give_v and_o after_o it_o be_v deliver_v do_v describe_v this_o matter_n unto_o we_o yet_o we_o must_v principal_o fetch_v it_o from_o the_o gospel_n because_o therein_o god_n do_v especial_o discover_v the_o decree_n that_o he_o have_v make_v with_o himself_o from_o before_o all_o time_n concern_v our_o salvation_n in_o which_o gospel_n we_o shall_v see_v more_o testimony_n and_o token_n give_v unto_o we_o for_o the_o assurance_n of_o our_o heart_n in_o it_o then_o as_o yet_o we_o have_v hear_v of_o as_o christ_n death_n yea_o the_o death_n of_o the_o cross_n for_o the_o redemption_n of_o mankind_n the_o mystery_n of_o the_o calling_n both_o of_o jew_n and_o gentile_n by_o the_o ministry_n of_o the_o word_n say_v and_z repentance_n give_v unto_o man_n through_o the_o hear_n of_o the_o word_n preach_v the_o justify_n and_o save_v of_o they_o which_o through_o faith_n believe_v in_o christ_n and_o by_o mean_n thereof_o take_v hold_v of_o he_o to_o eternal_a life_n and_o last_o the_o testimony_n &_o pledge_n of_o the_o spirit_n bear_v record_n unto_o our_o spirit_n that_o we_o be_v god_n son_n yea_o heir_n yea_o fellow_n heir_n with_o our_o saviour_n christ_n in_o which_o respect_n it_o be_v also_o else_o where_o call_v the_o earnest_n of_o our_o inheritance_n ephesian_n the_o first_o ver_fw-la 14._o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v suffice_v for_o this_o point_n 6_o their_o sixth_o argument_n or_o reason_n be_v thus_o frame_v he_o that_o have_v not_o in_o himself_o the_o perfect_a obedience_n of_o god_n law_n can_v certain_o conclude_v that_o he_o please_v god_n but_o must_v of_o necessity_n still_o doubt_v because_o we_o know_v that_o nothing_o can_v please_v god_n but_o perfect_a obedience_n and_o again_o this_o condition_n be_v add_v to_o the_o law_n do_v this_o and_o thou_o shall_v live_v also_o keep_v the_o commandment_n etc._n etc._n but_o no_o man_n have_v in_o he_o that_o perfect_a obedience_n therefore_o no_o man_n can_v certain_o conclude_v that_o he_o please_v god_n to_o all_o which_o we_o answer_v that_o we_o have_v many_o thing_n just_o to_o except_v against_o it_o as_o first_o that_o the_o mayor_n or_o proposition_n be_v not_o only_o frail_a but_o false_a in_o the_o sense_n that_o they_o set_v it_o down_o in_o yea_o though_o that_o it_o have_v adjoin_v unto_o it_o a_o double_a reason_n to_o it_o may_v discover_v unto_o we_o a_o mean_a a_o manner_n yea_o and_o matter_n of_o justification_n that_o in_o the_o law_n can_v not_o be_v find_v out_o and_o also_o teach_v we_o how_o to_o appropriate_v and_o apply_v the_o same_o unto_o our_o own_o heart_n last_o concern_v the_o minor_a we_o answer_v and_o say_v that_o no_o man_n have_v in_o himself_o as_o of_o himself_o that_o perfect_a and_o obedience_n of_o the_o law_n that_o they_o speak_v of_o howbeit_o we_o be_v assure_v that_o all_o that_o have_v christ_n have_v it_o because_o they_o do_v by_o faith_n lie_v hold_v of_o christ_n and_o his_o perfect_a obedience_n the_o want_n or_o lack_v of_o then_o own_o in_o themselves_o be_v so_o far_o of_o from_o hinder_v christ_n righteousness_n to_o they_o and_o in_o they_o that_o it_o rather_o further_v they_o thereto_o for_o he_o that_o be_v fill_v with_o his_o own_o can_v have_v no_o part_n of_o christ_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o he_o that_o be_v full_a though_o it_o be_v but_o of_o airy_a and_o windy_a matter_n or_o as_o we_o say_v bad_a repletion_n can_v hardly_o or_o not_o at_o all_o till_o he_o be_v purge_v of_o that_o admit_v any_o more_o but_o also_o because_o there_o be_v such_o a_o flat_a opposition_n between_o christ_n righteousness_n and_o man_n that_o they_o can_v both_o be_v at_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o time_n in_o one_o and_o the_o self_n same_o subject_n but_o the_o have_v of_o the_o one_o be_v the_o privation_n of_o the_o other_o as_o the_o apostle_n show_v in_o many_o place_n of_o his_o writing_n and_o namely_o rom._n 10._o verse_n 3._o and_o also_o rom._n 11._o verse_n 5.6_o psal_n 3.6_o and_o this_o i_o think_v may_v satisfy_v any_o reasonable_a man_n yea_o stop_n his_o mouth_n from_o bark_v or_o bellow_v against_o the_o truth_n of_o god_n howbeit_o our_o adversary_n yet_o press_v this_o point_n further_o and_o object_n say_v christ_n say_v in_o the_o gospel_n if_o any_o man_n love_v i_o he_o will_v keep_v my_o commandment_n or_o say_n or_o word_n but_o no_o man_n keep_v his_o word_n therefore_o say_v they_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no._n first_o for_o the_o form_n of_o the_o syllogysmo_n and_o then_o for_o the_o matter_n in_o the_o conclusion_n there_o be_v more_o then_o be_v in_o the_o promise_n for_o whereas_o the_o mayor_n teach_v we_o that_o obedience_n to_o christ_n word_n be_v a_o sign_n unto_o other_o and_o a_o pledge_n unto_o ourselves_o of_o some_o love_n that_o god_n have_v wrought_v in_o our_o heart_n towards_o he_o the_o conclusion_n turn_v it_o up_o side_n down_o and_o say_v no_o man_n can_v know_v whether_o god_n love_v he_o yea_o or_o no_o as_o though_o our_o love_n &_o god_n love_n be_v all_o one_o or_o as_o though_o god_n love_v not_o many_o i_o will_v not_o say_v unto_o eternal_a life_n for_o that_o love_n only_o belong_v to_o the_o elect_a but_o in_o many_o outward_a respect_n from_o which_o also_o as_o it_o shall_v seem_v christ_n be_v why_o they_o what_o be_v it_o that_o he_o will_v signify_v and_o set_v out_o unto_o we_o thereby_o sure_o this_o much_o that_o the_o care_n and_o conscience_n that_o the_o faithful_a have_v to_o obey_v his_o will_n and_o these_o good_a beginning_n and_o proceed_n that_o they_o have_v make_v therein_o by_o his_o spirit_n he_o will_v accept_v they_o as_o absolute_a and_o cover_v with_o the_o fullness_n of_o righteousness_n and_o obedience_n that_o be_v and_o be_v in_o himself_o and_o so_o present_v they_o in_o the_o sight_n of_o his_o heavenly_a father_n neither_o do_v that_o dislike_n for_o example_n our_o fear_n our_o love_n etc._n etc._n simple_o and_o in_o themselves_o consider_v as_o it_o be_v not_o sin_n in_o itself_o to_o have_v that_o passion_n of_o fear_n or_o that_o affection_n of_o fear_n as_o to_o our_o child_n etc._n etc._n so_o that_o they_o be_v free_v from_o extremity_n and_o such_o thing_n in_o the_o consideration_n before_o express_v be_v not_o to_o be_v account_v simple_o sin_n or_o evil_n but_o there_o be_v some_o thing_n now_o count_v natural_a which_o have_v both_o come_v upon_o &_o prevail_v upon_o the_o purity_n of_o our_o nature_n as_o it_o be_v in_o creation_n as_o for_o example_n ignorance_n in_o steed_n of_o our_o knowledge_n doubt_v or_o distrustfulnes_n in_o stead_n of_o our_o hope_n etc._n etc._n and_o these_o can_v choose_v but_o be_v evil_a for_o even_o as_o our_o creation_n and_o all_o the_o thing_n we_o have_v therein_o come_v from_o god_n make_v we_o to_o be_v denominate_v good_a because_o nothing_o can_v come_v from_o he_o but_o that_o which_o be_v good_a so_o these_o proceed_n from_o a_o contrary_a fountain_n that_o be_v satan_n and_o his_o malice_n can_v choose_v but_o be_v of_o the_o same_o nature_n that_o he_o be_v of_o that_o be_v evil_a &_o sinful_a and_o therefore_o concern_v doubt_v say_v that_o it_o be_v natural_a indeed_o but_o not_o as_o from_o our_o first_o creation_n for_o than_o it_o shall_v have_v be_v good_a but_o come_v unto_o our_o nature_n after_o the_o fall_n and_o so_o be_v deprave_a be_v evil_a special_o when_o it_o be_v refer_v to_o god_n as_o in_o all_o this_o question_n it_o be_v for_o though_o when_o we_o have_v to_o deal_v with_o man_n special_o such_o as_o who_o for_o their_o waywardness_n inconstancy_n &_o other_o corruption_n that_o we_o ourselves_o have_v have_v experience_n of_o we_o have_v just_a
faith_n but_o unto_o knowledge_n that_o be_v to_o say_v he_o speak_v not_o here_o of_o the_o assuredness_n of_o faith_n concern_v which_o alone_a we_o reason_n in_o this_o place_n or_o question_n but_o of_o the_o certainty_n of_o knowledge_n which_o be_v another_o matter_n then_o the_o certainty_n of_o faith_n and_o differ_v from_o it_o because_o only_o the_o elect_a have_v this_o and_o many_o beside_o they_o have_v that_o other_o signify_v that_o we_o be_v not_o sure_a of_o perseverance_n and_o therefore_o not_o of_o salvation_n neither_o to_o wit_n by_o the_o certainty_n of_o our_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o not_o deny_v our_o assurance_n of_o it_o by_o the_o certainty_n of_o faith_n and_o this_o we_o may_v perceive_v even_o out_o of_o augustine_n himself_o and_o so_o make_v he_o his_o own_o best_a expositour_n for_o first_o go_v about_o to_o prove_v that_o which_o he_o say_v namely_o that_o saint_n and_o holy_a man_n be_v not_o always_o assure_v of_o their_o perseverance_n he_o add_v and_o say_v who_o know_v and_o not_o who_o believe_v unless_o by_o some_o special_a revelation_n he_o be_v assure_v thereof_o etc._n etc._n sith_o therefore_o he_o mean_v that_o man_n be_v sometime_o find_v uncertain_a concern_v their_o own_o perseverance_n because_o no_o man_n know_v that_o he_o shall_v perseveare_a in_o his_o proceed_n in_o righteousness_n it_o be_v evident_a that_o he_o mean_v this_o his_o speech_n of_o that_o uncertainty_n and_o of_o that_o ignorance_n which_o be_v opposite_a to_o knowledge_n and_o not_o of_o that_o which_o be_v opposite_a to_o faith_n and_o differ_v as_o much_o one_o of_o they_o from_o another_o as_o knowledge_n and_o faith_n do_v that_o be_v to_o say_v that_o he_o affirm_v of_o the_o saint_n that_o they_o know_v not_o that_o they_o shall_v persevere_v in_o the_o very_a action_n and_o go_v forward_o of_o justice_n and_o not_o that_o they_o believe_v it_o not_o or_o ought_v not_o to_o believe_v it_o that_o by_o god_n grace_n through_o christ_n they_o shall_v be_v save_v and_o uphold_v both_o to_o continue_v unto_o the_o end_n and_o so_o persevere_v to_o depart_v out_o of_o this_o life_n yea_o he_o will_v rather_o have_v man_n to_o believe_v this_o for_o he_o add_v but_o he_o will_v make_v we_o continue_v even_o unto_o the_o end_n of_o our_o life_n in_o himself_o to_o who_o we_o daily_o say_v lead_v we_o not_o into_o temptation_n second_o when_o he_o say_v who_o know_v whether_o he_o shall_v continue_v in_o the_o action_n and_o proceed_n of_o righteousness_n he_o present_o adjoin_v unless_o he_o be_v by_o some_o revelation_n certify_v from_o he_o etc._n etc._n therefore_o we_o may_v plain_o perceive_v that_o he_o mean_v such_o a_o manner_n of_o knowledge_n concern_v some_o special_a matter_n or_o thing_n to_o will_n then_o by_o his_o word_n which_o though_o it_o speak_v not_o so_o particular_o and_o several_o unto_o every_o one_o as_o former_a vision_n &_o revelation_n do_v yet_o do_v it_o deliver_v matter_n of_o no_o less_o certainty_n &_o as_o much_o to_o be_v beleve_v then_o those_o revelation_n do_v as_o may_v perceive_v by_o that_o of_o luk._n 16._o they_o have_v moses_n &_o the_o prophet_n if_o they_o will_v not_o hear_v they_o neither_o will_v they_o believe_v though_o a_o man_n shall_v rise_v again_o from_o the_o dead_a three_o the_o same_o augustine_n in_o his_o book_n of_o the_o good_a of_o perseverance_n do_v from_o the_o second_o chapter_n to_o the_o seven_o and_o at_o large_a even_o according_a to_o cyprian_n judgement_n if_o i_o be_v not_o deceive_v show_n that_o the_o saint_n of_o god_n do_v in_o every_o petition_n of_o the_o lord_n prayer_n pray_v for_o the_o gift_n and_o grace_n of_o perseverance_n how_o right_o this_o be_v gather_v or_o do_v i_o mind_v not_o now_o to_o determine_v only_o from_o hence_o it_o appear_v that_o all_o the_o true_a and_o right_o believe_v father_n and_o particular_o augustine_n do_v teach_v that_o since_o such_o a_o grace_n be_v pray_v for_o and_o prayer_n can_v proceed_v but_o from_o faith_n for_o how_o shall_v they_o call_v upon_o he_o in_o who_o they_o believe_v not_o and_o from_o prayer_n there_o must_v be_v abandon_v all_o doubt_v that_o therefore_o howesoever_o they_o do_v not_o certain_o know_v yet_o they_o do_v assure_o believe_v that_o they_o shall_v be_v uphelde_v to_o persevere_v even_o unto_o the_o end_n therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o say_v that_o augustine_n at_o no_o hand_n will_v attribute_v to_o the_o saint_n any_o uncertainty_n of_o faith_n touch_v their_o peiseverance_n oâ—_n do_v think_v that_o they_o shall_v doubt_v of_o the_o grace_n of_o perseverance_n for_o which_o they_o be_v to_o pray_v or_o will_v have_v they_o as_o uncertain_a or_o doubtful_a person_n to_o be_v toss_v two_o and_o fro_o like_a wave_n of_o the_o sea_n special_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o god_n and_o his_o promise_n and_o other_o assure_a pledge_n that_o god_n have_v give_v to_o seal_v up_o that_o great_a mercy_n in_o they_o otherwise_o we_o know_v that_o neither_o he_o nor_o any_o other_o man_n measure_v man_n in_o their_o corruption_n or_o if_o you_o will_v in_o their_o own_o strength_n do_v or_o do_v hold_v that_o they_o can_v be_v stable_n and_o steadfast_a in_o the_o lord_n way_n and_o that_o therefore_o indeed_o they_o have_v good_a cause_n to_o be_v jealous_a or_o suspicious_a &_o that_o not_o amiss_o or_o to_o fear_v if_o you_o will_v as_o in_o respect_n of_o their_o own_o weakness_n and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o the_o same_o augustine_n open_o confess_v in_o the_o same_o book_n of_o the_o good_a of_o perseverance_n chap._n 8._o by_o all_o which_o it_o be_v plain_a and_o evident_a that_o when_o augustine_n speak_v of_o the_o uncertainty_n of_o the_o perseruerance_n of_o the_o saint_n he_o understand_v it_o of_o that_o uncertainty_n which_o arise_v from_o ourselves_o as_o when_o we_o consider_v our_o weakness_n to_o good_a work_n &_o pronenes_n to_o sin_n who_o be_v he_o that_o begin_v not_o to_o stagger_v and_o doubt_v and_o not_o of_o that_o which_o spring_v from_o distrust_n or_o doubt_v of_o the_o strength_n preservation_n and_o uphold_v of_o god_n for_o concern_v that_o he_o teach_v we_o to_o pray_v continual_o but_o they_o yet_o urge_v this_o further_a &_o say_v that_o there_o be_v a_o antithesis_fw-la or_o opposition_n between_o the_o reward_n of_o perseverance_n and_o the_o gift_n or_o grace_n of_o perseverance_n itself_o and_o that_o therefore_o we_o must_v understand_v as_o in_o the_o former_a assurance_n of_o faith_n so_o in_o the_o latter_a uncertainty_n of_o faith_n we_o answer_v neither_o will_n we_o deny_v but_o that_o there_o be_v a_o antithesis_fw-la or_o opposition_n yea_o and_o that_o it_o be_v of_o certainty_n and_o uncerten_o but_o not_o of_o the_o measure_n of_o certainty_n and_o uncertainty_n for_o still_o we_o stand_v upon_o that_o that_o he_o mean_v it_o of_o such_o uncertainty_n as_o be_v oppose_v against_o knowledge_n &_o not_o against_o faith_n which_o point_n also_o have_v be_v prove_v a_o little_a before_o and_o that_o out_o of_o augustine_n himself_o and_o therefore_o the_o uncertainty_n he_o speak_v of_o must_v be_v understand_v diverse_o and_o special_o concern_v the_o reward_n of_o perseverance_n which_o that_o it_o depend_v of_o god_n only_o &_o not_o of_o any_o endeavour_n of_o we_o be_v without_o all_o question_n for_o that_o god_n shall_v render_v unto_o they_o that_o persevere_v the_o reward_n of_o perseverance_n he_o require_v nothing_o of_o our_o endeavour_n study_n care_n etc._n etc._n but_o that_o as_o god_n himself_o have_v promise_v unto_o they_o so_o he_o do_v assure_o perform_v that_o reward_n and_o yet_o because_o to_o their_o good_a perseverance_n their_o be_v require_v also_o their_o endeavour_n and_o care_n which_o as_o it_o be_v in_o and_o of_o themselves_o very_o infirm_a and_o doubtful_a they_o can_v but_o sometime_o stand_v in_o fear_n of_o the_o perseverance_n and_o hold_v out_o of_o this_o their_o study_n and_o care_n so_o then_o he_o that_o in_o this_o question_n can_v put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o god_n &_o man_n and_o betwixt_o that_o which_o be_v from_o the_o one_o or_o from_o the_o other_o nay_o i_o will_v say_v more_o he_o that_o can_v discern_v in_o himself_o betwixt_o that_o which_o be_v in_o and_o of_o himself_o and_o that_o which_o be_v from_o god_n and_o by_o that_o mean_a also_o in_o some_o measure_n find_v in_o other_o man_n shall_v be_v able_a to_o determine_v this_o doubt_n and_o not_o otherwise_o 3_o three_o they_o allege_v that_o which_o jerome_n have_v upon_o the_o nine_o chapter_n of_o ecclesiastes_n say_v i_o have_v find_v that_o the_o

enable_v by_o god_n in_o some_o measure_n to_o accomplish_v &_o perform_v the_o same_o we_o assure_v our_o own_o heart_n that_o since_o we_o can_v perfect_o fulfil_v they_o ourselves_o &_o yet_o be_v fulfil_v by_o another_o for_o we_o we_o shall_v in_o his_o absolute_a accomplishment_n thereof_o &_o righteousness_n have_v a_o plentiful_a supply_n for_o all_o our_o defect_n whatsoever_o we_o know_v further_o that_o if_o many_o a_o compassionate_a man_n in_o the_o world_n do_v not_o take_v all_o advantage_n of_o breach_n of_o covenant_n or_o condition_n that_o another_o have_v make_v with_o he_o god_n who_o be_v compassion_n itself_o will_v not_o deal_v so_o with_o his_o servant_n who_o he_o have_v single_v out_o unto_o himself_o and_o separate_v to_o eternal_a life_n notwithstanding_o their_o weakness_n and_o want_n and_o condition_n in_o this_o case_n god_n propound_v none_o unto_o we_o by_o the_o gospel_n but_o to_o repent_v and_o believe_v the_o gospel_n both_o which_o be_v prove_v because_o god_n in_o his_o word_n have_v not_o prescribe_v a_o limit_a and_o determine_v measure_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n which_o whosoever_o have_v not_o attain_v unto_o he_o can_v be_v certify_v or_o assure_v of_o god_n grace_n and_o his_o own_o salvation_n but_o therein_o only_o require_v at_o our_o hand_n faith_n and_o repentance_n both_o which_o grace_n as_o all_o other_o fruit_n of_o the_o spirit_n be_v in_o some_o more_o and_o in_o some_o less_o according_a to_o the_o measure_n thereof_o give_v unto_o man_n from_o god_n and_o this_o may_v appear_v because_o christ_n simple_o and_o plain_o say_v he_o that_o believe_v in_o i_o have_v everlasting_a life_n not_o express_v how_o much_o or_o how_o little_a faith_n be_v requisite_a to_o that_o work_n so_o it_o be_v sound_a and_o true_a and_o we_o be_v teach_v in_o the_o scripture_n to_o pray_v for_o augmentation_n and_o increase_n of_o faith_n and_o to_o use_v all_o good_a mean_n whereby_o we_o may_v be_v build_v up_o therein_o and_o so_o proceed_v from_o faith_n to_o faith_n etc._n etc._n so_o may_v we_o yea_o so_o ought_v we_o to_o pray_v for_o increase_v of_o repentance_n &_o other_o fruit_n &_o of_o grace_n of_o the_o spirit_n and_o yet_o when_o we_o have_v attain_v through_o god_n goodness_n towards_o we_o a_o good_a measure_n yet_o we_o shall_v have_v our_o lack_n and_o what_o can_v be_v more_o plain_a then_o that_o christ_n say_v to_o the_o woman_n luke_n 7._o thy_n say_v have_v save_v thou_o although_o we_o doubt_v not_o the_o place_n and_o circumstance_n of_o it_o consider_v to_o affirm_v that_o she_o have_v not_o sufficient_a either_o faith_n or_o repentance_n and_o therefore_o we_o may_v safe_o conclude_v that_o though_o we_o believe_v weakelie_o yet_o so_o it_o be_v true_o and_o right_o all_o our_o sin_n be_v forgive_v we_o for_o jesus_n christ_n sake_n &_o we_o make_v partaker_n of_o all_o the_o fruit_n and_o merit_n of_o his_o death_n and_o passion_n beside_o what_o a_o absurdity_n will_v follow_v this_o conceit_n of_o sufficiency_n of_o faith_n and_o repentance_n for_o since_o no_o man_n live_v can_v either_o sufficient_o be_v sorrowful_a for_o his_o sin_n or_o make_v any_o answer_n or_o satisfaction_n unto_o god_n for_o they_o or_o sure_o determine_v concern_v the_o sufficiency_n of_o his_o faith_n and_o repentance_n because_o god_n have_v reveal_v no_o follow_v that_o no_o man_n shall_v hope_v for_o salvation_n but_o rather_o despair_v of_o it_o which_o beside_o that_o it_o be_v absurd_a be_v both_o ungodly_a and_o uncomfortable_a also_o but_o if_o they_o will_v yet_o further_o object_n and_o say_v that_o no_o man_n know_v whether_o he_o do_v true_o repent_v and_o believe_v or_o else_o whether_o he_o ascribe_v unto_o himself_o the_o thing_n he_o papist_n join_v their_o work_n at_o the_o least_o with_o he_o and_o the_o carnal_a professor_n in_o the_o corrupt_a course_n of_o his_o conversation_n deny_v his_o power_n to_o mortification_n and_o sanctification_n therefore_o i_o separate_v from_o all_o and_o everye_o one_o of_o they_o in_o strength_n of_o persuasion_n in_o particular_a application_n and_o the_o fruit_n of_o faith_n and_o the_o forgiveness_n of_o my_o sin_n but_o satan_n will_v yet_o again_o press_v and_o urge_v this_o further_a thus_o the_o faithful_a very_o be_v not_o damn_v but_o save_v by_o christ_n but_o thou_o be_v not_o faithful_a or_o have_v not_o faith_n therefore_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v save_v by_o christ_n but_o must_v notwithstanding_o for_o the_o want_n of_o thy_o faith_n remain_v still_o under_o that_o be_v to_o say_v good_a work_n which_o can_v but_o assure_v i_o of_o my_o salvation_n and_o of_o god_n grace_n and_o confirm_v i_o in_o the_o certain_a hope_n of_o the_o one_o and_o the_o other_o and_o this_o be_v that_o which_o saint_n peter_n provoke_v unto_o when_o he_o say_v brethren_n g_o we_o diligence_n by_o good_a work_n to_o make_v your_o call_n and_o election_n sure_a for_o if_o you_o do_v these_o thing_n you_o shall_v never_o fall_v because_o by_o this_o mean_v a_o entry_n shall_v be_v minister_v unto_o you_o abundant_o into_o the_o everlasting_a kingdom_n of_o our_o this_o faith_n of_o thou_o which_o thou_o speak_v of_o and_o these_o fruit_n of_o it_o that_o thou_o mention_v they_o be_v imperfect_a they_o be_v faint_a and_o few_o yea_o they_o seldom_o or_o very_o rare_o appear_v or_o be_v see_v what_o then_o satan_n grant_v that_o my_o faith_n and_o good_a work_n be_v faint_a and_o few_o in_o i_o will_v thou_o infer_v that_o therefore_o i_o have_v none_o that_o be_v against_o all_o reason_n and_o religion_n in_o reason_n he_o that_o have_v but_o a_o sick_a pine_a or_o languish_v life_n live_v still_o and_o in_o hope_n of_o the_o better_n of_o his_o estate_n either_o as_o in_o regard_n of_o this_o world_n if_o god_n will_v or_o as_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o life_n to_o come_v especial_o and_o why_o shall_v not_o this_o in_o measure_n and_o manner_n be_v true_a as_o in_o respect_n of_o our_o spiritual_a life_n here_o in_o religion_n we_o know_v that_o god_n accept_v both_o the_o whole_a church_n &_o the_o several_a member_n of_o it_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v and_o not_o according_a to_o that_o they_o have_v not_o provide_v always_o that_o that_o which_o they_o have_v they_o have_v it_o from_o he_o or_o else_o how_o can_v the_o church_n &_o member_n of_o it_o rejoice_v or_o comfort_v themselves_o in_o the_o thing_n that_o they_o do_v and_o from_o hence_o be_v it_o indeed_o that_o we_o learn_v notwithstanding_o weakness_n &_o want_n either_o in_o whole_a congregation_n or_o several_a member_n not_o to_o break_v the_o unity_n of_o the_o spirit_n in_o the_o band_n of_o peace_n nor_o to_o forsake_v the_o fellowship_n of_o the_o brethren_n and_o the_o exercise_n of_o the_o church_n as_o the_o manner_n of_o sin_n be_v but_o n_o holy_a wisdom_n and_o power_n from_o above_o to_o put_v a_o difference_n betwixt_o good_a and_o evil_a and_o that_o not_o only_o in_o our_o persuasion_n but_o in_o our_o practice_n not_o forsake_v the_o good_a of_o our_o god_n for_o some_o evil_n or_o corruption_n of_o man_n adjoin_v therewithal_o nor_o yet_o for_o the_o good_n sake_n justify_v or_o approve_v the_o evil_a and_o if_o this_o be_v not_o sufficient_a yet_o we_o have_v further_a prop_n to_o our_o faith_n here_o namely_o first_o that_o though_o our_o faith_n be_v weak_a and_o faint_a yet_o be_v it_o true_a and_o sound_a for_o even_o that_o faith_n which_o be_v infirm_a and_o weak_a may_v yet_o notwitstanding_n be_v true_a &_o right_a the_o reason_n be_v because_o that_o not_o weak_a faith_n and_o true_a faith_n be_v opposite_a but_o weak_a faith_n and_o no_o faith_n and_o this_o we_o may_v see_v also_o by_o the_o worthy_a speech_n of_o the_o father_n of_o the_o sick_a child_n in_o the_o gospel_n lord_n i_o believe_v but_o help_v thou_o my_o unbelief_n this_o weakness_n &_o imperfection_n our_o faith_n not_o come_v from_o itself_o nor_o be_v in_o itself_o as_o of_o itself_o for_o so_o it_o be_v a_o excellent_a and_o a_o absolute_a work_n of_o god_n but_o as_o it_o be_v intermingle_v with_o the_o remainder_n of_o our_o unbelieve_a heart_n which_o yet_o notwithstanding_o the_o faintness_n and_o weakness_n of_o it_o may_v no_o less_o effectual_o
these_o word_n that_o thy_o faith_n fail_v not_o or_o if_o you_o will_v this_o be_v the_o end_n that_o christ_n aim_v at_o in_o his_o prayer_n or_o the_o fruit_n &_o effect_n that_o follow_v they_o in_o this_o same_o dangerous_a combat_n whereof_o also_o as_o seem_v to_o i_o there_o be_v great_a reason_n for_o if_o our_o sin_n which_o be_v from_o satan_n malice_n or_o our_o own_o corruption_n do_v grieve_v we_o &_o possess_v our_o heart_n with_o fear_n why_o shall_v not_o the_o fruit_n of_o our_o faith_n and_o obedience_n which_o be_v from_o god_n yield_v we_o comfort_v &_o fill_v our_o heart_n with_o hope_n not_o because_o they_o be_v in_o we_o for_o so_o we_o do_v many_o time_n weaken_v they_o at_o the_o jest_n if_o not_o impair_v or_o hurt_v they_o but_o as_o they_o be_v in_o we_o from_o god_n who_o we_o be_v sure_o will_v accept_v of_o his_o own_o good_a work_n and_o grace_n vouchsafe_v unto_o us._n last_o i_o say_v that_o as_o we_o abstain_v not_o from_o meat_n and_o drink_v and_o other_o necessary_a aide_n of_o natural_a life_n because_o we_o know_v that_o the_o term_n and_o time_n of_o the_o say_a life_n be_v limit_v by_o god_n so_o there_o be_v no_o man_n unless_o he_o be_v witting_o and_o wilful_o wicked_a that_o therefore_o will_v give_v himself_o over_o to_o sin_n because_o he_o be_v assure_v of_o his_o own_o salvation_n for_o that_o be_v to_o turn_v the_o
