abraham_n choose_a seed_n unto_o who_o alone_o the_o promise_n be_v make_v so_o that_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n be_v firm_a and_o stable_a so_o than_o you_o see_v it_o be_v from_o a_o misconceive_a and_o misapply_v of_o the_o promise_n that_o the_o jew_n think_v that_o the_o promise_n of_o god_n be_v void_a which_o be_v make_v unto_o abraham_n if_o they_o be_v reject_v the_o jew_n apply_v the_o promise_n to_o the_o carnal_a seed_n of_o abraham_n unto_o the_o seed_n of_o abraham_n according_a to_o the_o flesh_n and_o therefore_o they_o force_v this_o false_a conclusion_n but_o the_o apostle_n tell_v they_o plain_o that_o all_o they_o that_o come_v of_o israel_n by_o carnal_a generation_n they_o be_v not_o the_o true_a seed_n of_o israel_n so_o that_o their_o misapply_n be_v the_o cause_n of_o their_o false_a collection_n hence_o then_o note_v we_o thus_o much_o doctrine_n that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n promise_n be_v misunderstand_a and_o misapplyed_n it_o be_v not_o true_o comfortable_a it_o be_v not_o a_o true_a ground_n of_o comfort_n to_o those_o that_o so_o mis-understand_a it_o and_o misapply_v it_o or_o we_o may_v put_v this_o down_o in_o the_o general_n thus_o that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n either_o promise_a mercy_n or_o threaten_a judgement_n or_o teach_v any_o duty_n be_v misunderstand_v and_o misapply_v be_v not_o the_o true_a profitable_a and_o comfortable_a word_n of_o god_n to_o those_o that_o so_o misunderstand_v it_o and_o misapply_v it_o in_o 2_o tim._n 2._o we_o find_v that_o the_o apostle_n have_v exhort_v timothy_n to_o a_o constant_a undergo_n of_o the_o labour_n of_o the_o ministry_n and_o to_o a_o patient_a bear_n of_o the_o cross_n that_o come_v by_o reason_n of_o the_o execution_n of_o his_o office_n then_o in_o mis-understand_a and_o misapply_v they_o they_o be_v so_o far_o from_o be_v comfortable_a when_o man_n do_v pervert_v they_o and_o turn_v they_o which_o way_n they_o listen_v that_o they_o tend_v to_o their_o own_o destruction_n and_o indeed_o though_o the_o scripture_n be_v in_o itself_o the_o will_n and_o wisdom_n of_o god_n reveal_v unto_o we_o and_o though_o it_o be_v true_a that_o god_n speak_v unto_o we_o in_o and_o by_o the_o same_o yet_o the_o word_n of_o god_n misunderstand_a and_o misapplyed_n it_o be_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n neither_o do_v god_n speak_v unto_o we_o and_o as_o one_o say_v well_o the_o word_n of_o god_n foolish_o pervert_v and_o understand_v it_o be_v not_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o he_o that_o so_o understand_v it_o and_o therefore_o can_v be_v true_o profitable_a and_o comfortable_a unto_o he_o for_o the_o application_n it_o concern_v we_o then_o in_o the_o first_o place_n that_o be_v minister_n and_o messenger_n use_v 1_o of_o god_n that_o take_v upon_o we_o to_o handle_v the_o holy_a word_n of_o god_n and_o to_o deliver_v it_o unto_o god_n people_n to_o be_v careful_a of_o it_o that_o we_o right_o understand_v and_o right_o apply_v the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o that_o we_o deliver_v unto_o our_o hearer_n god_n word_n and_o out_o of_o god_n word_n god_n mind_n and_o meaning_n that_o they_o may_v say_v god_n speak_v in_o the_o preacher_n 1_o cor._n 14.25_o so_o must_v we_o deliver_v the_o mind_n and_o word_n of_o god_n and_o then_o only_o shall_v we_o find_v the_o blessing_n of_o god_n upon_o the_o word_n we_o handle_v and_o then_o we_o shall_v draw_v man_n to_o a_o holy_a course_n of_o life_n or_o at_o least_o convince_v they_o of_o their_o sin_n if_o we_o deliver_v it_o so_o as_o god_n may_v be_v say_v to_o speak_v in_o we_o or_o by_o we_o than_o we_o may_v look_v for_o a_o blessing_n upon_o it_o to_o the_o work_n of_o grace_n and_o to_o convert_v they_o to_o a_o holy_a life_n for_o if_o it_o be_v not_o right_o ground_v either_o upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n or_o derive_v thence_o sure_o take_v it_o for_o a_o truth_n it_o be_v not_o god_n word_n though_o it_o be_v a_o sound_a orthodox_n and_o a_o true_a point_n of_o divinity_n yet_o if_o it_o be_v not_o ground_v upon_o the_o word_n of_o god_n we_o handle_v or_o by_o necessary_a consequence_n it_o be_v man_n word_n and_o not_o god_n word_n again_o this_o be_v so_o that_o the_o word_n of_o god_n be_v not_o the_o true_a profitable_a use_v 2_o and_o comfortable_a word_n of_o god_n be_v misunderstand_v and_o misapplyed_n it_o then_o concern_v every_o one_o of_o we_o all_o that_o be_v hearer_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n to_o look_v unto_o it_o that_o in_o hear_v and_o read_v the_o holy_a word_n of_o god_n

so_o much_o as_o be_v needful_a to_o be_v know_v unto_o salvation_n this_o be_v the_o very_a end_n of_o god_n as_o appear_v joh._n 20.31_o say_v the_o evangelist_n many_o other_o thing_n jesus_n do_v but_o these_o be_v write_v that_o you_o may_v believe_v that_o jesus_n christ_n be_v the_o son_n of_o god_n and_o by_o believe_v may_v have_v life_n i._n e_o faith_n and_o salvation_n through_o his_o name_n so_o that_o this_o be_v undoubted_o true_a that_o the_o penman_n of_o the_o scripture_n have_v thus_o explain_v it_o use_v 1_o wicked_o then_o deal_v the_o papist_n in_o that_o they_o lay_v a_o hardness_n and_o obscurity_n on_o the_o word_n of_o god_n and_o teach_v that_o though_o the_o scripture_n be_v deliver_v in_o our_o mother_n tongue_n yet_o they_o be_v so_o hard_a to_o be_v understand_v not_o only_o of_o the_o ignorant_a and_o common_a sort_n of_o people_n the_o laity_n but_o the_o learned_a among_o themselves_o they_o can_v tell_v when_o they_o have_v the_o true_a sense_n and_o meaning_n of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n no_o not_o of_o the_o thing_n that_o be_v fundamental_a unless_o the_o church_n consent_n with_o they_o nay_o the_o great_a rabbin_n and_o doctor_n among_o we_o can_v understand_v the_o scripture_n without_o consent_n of_o the_o church_n oh_o consider_v have_v god_n send_v unto_o we_o his_o word_n as_o a_o letter_n and_o epistle_n to_o testify_v his_o mind_n unto_o we_o and_o unto_o his_o church_n and_o have_v he_o shut_v it_o up_o in_o such_o doubtful_a term_n that_o a_o man_n can_v tell_v when_o he_o have_v the_o understanding_n of_o it_o he_o send_v it_o to_o testify_v his_o mind_n and_o will_n unto_o we_o and_o have_v he_o so_o shut_v it_o up_o that_o we_o can_v tell_v when_o we_o have_v the_o sense_n of_o it_o oh_o fearful_a blasphemy_n why_o it_o be_v better_a that_o we_o have_v no_o scripture_n write_v at_o all_o far_o better_o then_o to_o have_v it_o so_o doubtful_a but_o there_o be_v no_o jot_n of_o it_o but_o serve_v for_o the_o good_a of_o his_o people_n both_o in_o this_o life_n and_o the_o life_n to_o come_v god_n have_v so_o order_v the_o tongue_n of_o the_o holy_a writer_n and_o penman_n of_o scripture_n his_o prophet_n and_o apostle_n that_o the_o meaning_n be_v easy_a to_o be_v understand_v by_o such_o as_o come_v unto_o it_o with_o attentive_a mind_n that_o do_v read_v diligent_o mark_v attentive_o judge_v humble_o and_o pray_v hearty_o use_v 2_o but_o to_o make_v use_n of_o this_o to_o ourselves_o be_v it_o so_o that_o the_o holy_a prophet_n and_o penman_n of_o scripture_n do_v deliver_v plain_o in_o one_o place_n what_o be_v hard_a in_o another_o upon_o this_o ground_n it_o follow_v that_o the_o best_a way_n of_o expound_v scripture_n be_v by_o scripture_n itself_o we_o common_o give_v thus_o much_o to_o a_o man_n that_o he_o be_v the_o best_a expounder_n of_o himself_o so_o then_o learn_v we_o to_o apply_v and_o compare_v scripture_n with_o scripture_n and_o in_o that_o we_o do_v not_o apply_v scripture_n with_o scripture_n it_o be_v the_o reason_n why_o we_o do_v let_v slip_v other_o place_n that_o may_v help_v we_o in_o the_o true_a application_n of_o scripture_n it_o be_v a_o subtlety_n that_o satan_n or_o the_o devil_n and_o our_o heart_n be_v ready_a to_o join_v with_o he_o that_o he_o make_v man_n to_o hale_v and_o draw_v unto_o themselves_o such_o place_n of_o scripture_n as_o they_o think_v do_v favour_n they_o in_o their_o sin_n by_o their_o abuse_n of_o it_o they_o lay_v hand_n upon_o those_o place_n that_o so_o seem_v &_o willing_o and_o purposely_o forget_v other_o place_n that_o do_v draw_v they_o back_o from_o such_o conjecture_v as_o the_o usurer_n will_v draw_v such_o place_n as_o may_v countenance_v his_o sin_n to_o his_o seem_n and_o neglect_v those_o that_o draw_v he_o to_o the_o contrary_a yea_o many_o man_n they_o turn_v god_n grace_n unto_o wantonness_n to_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n with_o a_o high_a hand_n and_o stiff_a neck_n add_v drunkenness_n to_o thirst_n they_o be_v impenitent_a in_o their_o sin_n and_o will_v not_o be_v reform_v and_o yet_o for_o all_o this_o they_o persuade_v themselves_o that_o they_o shall_v find_v mercy_n from_o the_o lord_n and_o why_o whence_o come_v this_o the_o devil_n be_v ready_a to_o suggest_v unto_o they_o and_o to_o furnish_v they_o with_o remembrance_n of_o a_o number_n of_o comfortable_a place_n of_o scripture_n that_o set_v forth_o god_n mercy_n as_o that_o in_o psal_n 103.8_o the_o lord_n be_v full_a of_o compassion_n and_o mercy_n slow_a to_o anger_n and_o of_o great_a kindness_n and_o in_o psal_n 145.9_o the_o mercy_n of_o the_o lord_n be_v over_o all_o his_o work_n these_o the_o devil_n make_v to_o entitle_v to_o themselves_o yea_o with_o a_o psalm_n of_o mercy_n to_o carry_v they_o up_o to_o the_o high_a pitch_n of_o presumption_n and_o to_o lay_v violent_a hand_n upon_o those_o place_n of_o scripture_n that_o be_v full_a of_o comfort_n and_o to_o say_v certain_o god_n be_v merciful_a and_o forgiveness_n be_v with_o the_o lord_n and_o though_o i_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n yet_o i_o shall_v find_v mercy_n purposely_o forget_v many_o other_o place_n of_o scripture_n that_o show_v god_n be_v a_o revenge_a god_n and_o a_o consume_a fire_n that_o punish_v those_o that_o go_v on_o in_o sin_n psal_n 25.10_o that_o mercy_n and_o truth_n go_v together_o god_n be_v merciful_a but_o he_o be_v also_o true_a true_a in_o his_o threaten_n as_o well_o as_o in_o his_o promise_n yea_o forget_v to_o apply_v these_o place_n full_a of_o comfort_n with_o the_o consideration_n of_o that_o which_o moses_n say_v deut._n 29.20_o if_o any_o man_n go_v on_o in_o the_o stubbornness_n of_o his_o own_o heart_n and_o add_v drunkenness_n to_o thirst_n one_o sin_n unto_o another_o the_o lord_n will_v not_o be_v merciful_a to_o that_o man_n they_o never_o remember_v this_o the_o devil_n teach_v they_o to_o forget_v that_o god_n be_v just_a and_o full_a of_o judgement_n and_o that_o his_o jealousy_n shall_v smoke_v against_o those_o that_o go_v on_o in_o their_o sin_n sure_o the_o lord_n will_v render_v vengeance_n upon_o they_o oh_o therefore_o in_o comfort_n of_o it_o and_o draw_v we_o back_o from_o wrest_v and_o pervert_v of_o it_o else_o we_o shall_v make_v that_o which_o shall_v be_v our_o life_n our_o death_n and_o that_o which_o shall_v administer_v comfort_n and_o sweetness_n unto_o we_o to_o be_v a_o mean_n to_o encourage_v we_o to_o sin_n and_o to_o add_v sin_n to_o sin_n and_o so_o to_o rush_v upon_o our_o own_o ruin_n and_o destruction_n in_o the_o fear_n of_o god_n therefore_o consider_v it_o and_o the_o lord_n give_v you_o all_o understanding_n that_o be_v they_o that_o be_v the_o child_n of_o the_o flesh_n be_v not_o the_o child_n of_o god_n but_o the_o child_n of_o the_o promise_n be_v account_v for_o the_o seed_n touch_v the_o apostle_n denial_n that_o they_o that_o come_v of_o abraham_n according_a to_o the_o man_n for_o scholar_n to_o hear_v sermon_n we_o be_v poor_a unlettered_a man_n and_o woman_n and_o so_o hereby_o they_o wrong_v themselves_o but_o mark_v what_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v of_o yet_o they_o must_v keep_v the_o sense_n entire_a and_o see_v that_o they_o do_v not_o swerve_v from_o the_o intent_n and_o purpose_n of_o the_o holy_a spirit_n of_o god_n in_o the_o text._n and_o person_n set_v themselves_o forth_o in_o vanity_n of_o attire_n shagg_v haired_a person_n usurer_n and_o covetous_a person_n shall_v we_o find_v to_o one_o true_a sound_a upright-hearted_n christian_n it_o be_v nigh_o a_o thousand_o to_o one_o so_o that_o it_o be_v a_o certain_a truth_n that_o a_o multitude_n of_o people_n may_v have_v the_o true_a worship_n of_o god_n and_o yet_o few_o of_o they_o
