say_v he_o the_o fallow_a ground_n and_o sow_v not_o among_o thorn_n if_o thou_o do_v not_o they_o will_v grow_v up_o to_o that_o height_n and_o rankness_n that_o they_o will_v spoil_v the_o whole_a think_v it_o to_o be_v the_o apostle_n say_v mortify_v your_o member_n now_o can_v a_o man_n stab_v his_o own_o arm_n through_o with_o ease_n can_v he_o cut_v off_o his_o leg_n or_o any_o other_o member_n without_o feel_v any_o great_a pain_n no_o more_o can_v a_o man_n kill_v his_o sin_n and_o mortify_v his_o lust_n with_o ease_n it_o be_v call_v mortification_n to_o show_v that_o there_o be_v a_o great_a deal_n of_o misery_n and_o pain_n in_o it_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o those_o that_o be_v christian_n have_v crucify_v the_o flesh_n etc._n etc._n gal._n 5._o 24._o and_o but_o to_o crucify_v a_o man_n lust_n and_o to_o mortify_v daily_o the_o body_n of_o death_n which_o he_o ber_v about_o he_o this_o be_v a_o hard_a thing_n indeed_o a_o father_n say_v it_o be_v the_o hard_a text_n in_o all_o the_o bible_n and_o the_o hard_a duty_n in_o all_o christianity_n that_o we_o can_v go_v about_o they_o that_o do_v itâ—_n a_o do_v all_o thing_n and_o therefore_o let_v a_o man_n resolve_v with_o himself_o that_o unless_o he_o attain_v unto_o this_o there_o be_v no_o christ_n for_o he_o how_o shall_v we_o say_v the_o apostle_n that_o be_v dead_a to_o sin_n live_v any_o and_o say_v what_o object_n do_v the_o apostle_n mean_v to_o exhort_v the_o colossian_n unto_o mortification_n be_v they_o not_o already_o mortify_v do_v he_o not_o say_v a_o little_a before_o that_o they_o be_v crucify_v and_o bury_v together_o with_o christ_n yes_o it_o be_v true_a but_o they_o that_o have_v mortify_v sol._n sol._n their_o earthly_a member_n must_v go_v on_o and_o persevere_v in_o this_o mortification_n and_o that_o for_o three_o reason_n first_o because_o the_o very_a same_o sin_n that_o have_v be_v kill_v will_v live_v again_o unless_o it_o be_v continual_o mortify_v for_o sin_n be_v strong-hearted_n it_o be_v not_o every_o blow_n that_o will_v kill_v sin_n stone-dead_a no_o no_o we_o may_v say_v of_o sin_n as_o some_o say_v of_o cat_n they_o have_v nine_o life_n kill_v sin_n once_o and_o it_o will_v revive_v again_o kill_v it_o the_o second_o time_n and_o it_o will_v yet_o live_v kill_v it_o the_o three_o time_n it_o will_v yet_o have_v life_n unless_o it_o be_v continual_o mortify_v it_o will_v never_o be_v stark_o dead_a and_o therefore_o the_o workâ—_n must_v be_v continue_v as_o christ_n say_v of_o his_o disciple_n if_o you_o continue_v in_o my_o word_n then_o be_v you_o my_o disciple_n indeed_o so_o if_o we_o go_v on_o in_o mortification_n then_o very_o be_v we_o christ_n disciple_n second_o suppose_v the_o sin_n mortify_v do_v not_o rise_v again_o yet_o if_o we_o go_v not_o on_o in_o the_o way_n of_o mortification_n there_o will_v arise_v another_o sin_n in_o the_o room_n of_o it_o sin_n be_v like_o the_o monster_n hydra_n cut_v off_o one_o head_n and_o many_o will_v rise_v up_o in_o its_o room_n even_o so_o it_o be_v in_o the_o body_n of_o sin_n therefore_o thou_o must_v daily_o mortify_v it_o or_o else_o it_o will_v grow_v again_o there_o be_v a_o history_n that_o speak_v of_o a_o figtree_n that_o grow_v in_o a_o stone_n wall_n and_o all_o mean_n be_v use_v to_o kill_v it_o they_o cut_v off_o the_o branch_n and_o it_o grow_v again_o they_o cut_v down_o the_o body_n and_o it_o grow_v again_o they_o cut_v it_o up_o by_o the_o root_n and_o still_o it_o live_v and_o grow_v until_o they_o pull_v down_o the_o stone_n wall_n even_o so_o it_o be_v with_o sin_n lop_v off_o the_o branch_n it_o live_v cut_v down_o the_o body_n it_o will_v not_o die_v dig_v up_o the_o root_n and_o it_o will_v still_o revive_v and_o will_v never_o leave_v grow_v until_o god_n pull_v down_o the_o stone_n wall_n of_o this_o our_o earthly_a tabernacle_n and_o lay_v it_o in_o the_o dust_n and_o therefore_o we_o must_v still_o be_v mortify_v of_o it_o three_o because_o as_o we_o mortify_v so_o we_o mortify_v but_o in_o part_n as_o say_v the_o apostle_n in_o another_o case_n we_o know_v but_o in_o part_n etc._n etc._n so_o may_v we_o say_v of_o this_o duty_n we_o mortify_v but_o in_o part_n as_o we_o say_v of_o a_o man_n breathe_v out_o his_o last_o breath_n he_o be_v ady_v but_o not_o quite_o dead_a so_o we_o may_v say_v of_o sin_n though_o it_o lie_v sprawl_v upon_o the_o ground_n yet_o it_o be_v not_o dead_a the_o last_o gasp_n be_v not_o past_a nay_o it_o may_v be_v sin_n be_v more_o strive_v in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o child_n of_o god_n convert_v than_o it_o be_v before_o conversion_n as_o a_o ox_n or_o a_o ass_n when_o they_o have_v their_o death_n blow_n will_v lash_v and_o struggle_v more_o then_o than_o they_o do_v in_o all_o their_o life_n time_n before_o but_o this_o be_v nothing_o but_o the_o pang_n of_o death_n be_v give_v up_o their_o last_o breath_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o apostle_n say_v that_o the_o flesh_n lu_v against_o the_o spirit_n and_o the_o spirit_n against_o the_o flesh_n gal._n 5._o so_o that_o they_o can_v not_o do_v what_o they_o will_v verse_n 17._o as_o if_o he_o shall_v say_v sin_n be_v so_o mortify_v that_o it_o have_v his_o death_n wound_n in_o thou_o else_o thou_o can_v not_o be_v the_o child_n of_o god_n yea_o such_o a_o death_n wound_n as_o it_o can_v possible_o recover_v again_o if_o a_o man_n that_o have_v receive_v his_o deâ—ths_n wound_n shall_v send_v for_o all_o the_o physician_n in_o the_o world_n and_o take_v all_o the_o physic_n wrought_v in_o he_o sin_n have_v his_o death_n blow_n and_o although_o the_o devil_n come_v as_o physician_n with_o all_o the_o cordial_n julip_n and_o balm_n under_o heaven_n and_o use_v all_o the_o shift_n and_o devise_n in_o the_o world_n yet_o he_o shall_v never_o be_v able_a to_o recover_v it_o again_o all_o will_v not_o do_v why_o because_o it_o have_v receive_v its_o death_n blow_n it_o may_v be_v with_o his_o industry_n and_o cost_n he_o may_v make_v the_o face_n of_o sin_n look_v fresh_a and_o fair_a for_o a_o time_n but_o it_o have_v it_o death_n wound_n and_o it_o will_v down_o at_o the_o last_o now_o that_o we_o may_v know_v whether_o we_o mark_n mark_n have_v mortify_v our_o sin_n or_o no_o let_v we_o observe_v these_o mark_n follow_v first_o they_o that_o have_v mortify_v their_o sin_n live_v in_o the_o contrary_a grace_n hence_o it_o be_v that_o the_o psalmist_n say_v that_o they_o work_v no_o iniquity_n but_o walk_v in_o thy_o path_n psal_n 119._o 3._o first_o they_o crucify_v all_o their_o sin_n they_o do_v
