fashion_n this_o be_v well_o but_o it_o be_v not_o so_o safe_a a_o sign_n of_o our_o new_a birth_n for_o this_o may_v befall_v even_o a_o hypocrite_n he_o may_v be_v so_o convince_v by_o a_o word_n of_o grace_n and_o wise_a counsel_n as_o may_v strong_o turn_v the_o stream_n of_o his_o course_n another_o way_n and_o yet_o be_v without_o any_o life_n and_o power_n of_o godliness_n only_o the_o word_n of_o promise_n be_v able_a to_o work_v grace_n and_o life_n in_o the_o heart_n of_o a_o man_n for_o the_o ground_n of_o the_o point_n be_v this_o point_n ground_n of_o the_o point_n we_o can_v change_n in_o your_o carriage_n your_o course_n of_o life_n be_v much_o alter_v you_o be_v not_o so_o light_a and_o wanton_a as_o you_o be_v but_o you_o take_v a_o far_o more_o grave_a and_o wise_a and_o stay_v course_n and_o to_o much_o better_a purpose_n both_o for_o church_n and_o commonwealth_n wherein_o you_o live_v now_o i_o say_v if_o you_o shall_v go_v on_o and_o look_v for_o that_o then_o follow_v a_o sweet_a tranquillity_n of_o peace_n in_o the_o soul_n a_o matter_n that_o philosopher_n have_v talk_v of_o to_o quiet_a the_o mind_n to_o lull_v man_n asleep_a and_o with_o apply_v remedy_n do_v stupisie_n for_o a_o while_n and_o take_v off_o the_o heavy_a burden_n or_o the_o sense_n of_o the_o burden_n rather_o than_o the_o burden_n itself_o but_o so_o soon_o as_o ever_o god_n pardon_v sin_n there_o be_v shed_v abroad_o a_o spirit_n of_o peace_n in_o our_o soul_n and_o sometime_o in_o that_o unspeakable_a measure_n as_o that_o it_o pass_v the_o understanding_n of_o a_o of_o grace_n for_o the_o ground_n of_o all_o our_o spiritual_a life_n as_o if_o ever_o we_o will_v be_v able_a to_o say_v we_o be_v beget_v to_o a_o new_a inheritance_n we_o must_v be_v able_a and_o be_v able_a to_o say_v we_o have_v some_o word_n of_o promise_n which_o have_v wrought_v this_o in_o our_o soul_n which_o have_v bow_v we_o to_o look_v to_o christ_n and_o to_o cleave_v to_o he_o for_o strength_n and_o increase_v and_o grow_v in_o grace_n for_o it_o be_v true_a indeed_o the_o work_n of_o the_o law_n may_v indeed_o cut_v we_o off_o from_o some_o bad_a way_n but_o when_o it_o have_v do_v so_o it_o leave_v we_o there_o leave_v we_o in_o a_o estate_n wherein_o we_o will_v not_o give_v offence_n and_o will_v not_o displease_v man_n that_o be_v grave_a and_o wise_a and_o this_o we_o may_v reach_v unto_o without_o respect_n to_o the_o glory_n of_o god_n or_o any_o inward_a regard_n of_o his_o holy_a fear_n but_o when_o as_o we_o be_v quicken_v to_o live_v by_o virtue_n new_a creature_n and_o old_a thing_n be_v pass_v away_o 2_o cor._n 5.17_o he_o have_v a_o new_a mind_n and_o a_o new_a heart_n new_a affection_n new_a language_n and_o new_a employment_n that_o he_o taste_n of_o the_o old_a man_n yet_o the_o frame_n both_o of_o the_o body_n and_o soul_n be_v of_o another_o mould_n and_o all_o thing_n be_v become_v new_a in_o some_o measure_n than_o you_o live_v a_o new_a life_n indeed_o else_o it_o be_v not_o a_o perfect_a change_n though_o this_o and_o that_o alteration_n be_v wrought_v in_o you_o by_o these_o cause_n you_o may_v clear_o discern_v whether_o god_n have_v give_v you_o a_o new_a life_n or_o no_o consider_v it_o therefore_o i_o beseech_v you_o how_o do_v you_o now_o find_v your_o heart_n apt_a to_o speak_v when_o you_o speak_v of_o that_o conscience_n pacify_v in_o some_o measure_n careful_a to_o maintain_v that_o peace_n we_o have_v have_v so_o much_o ado_n to_o get_v and_o also_o love_v of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o abundance_n sanctify_v at_o once_o and_o exercise_n itself_o in_o the_o conversion_n of_o a_o sinner_n you_o shall_v find_v that_o when_o the_o soul_n discern_v any_o life_n of_o grace_n in_o its_o heart_n that_o the_o worship_v of_o god_n in_o those_o duty_n of_o the_o life_n of_o sanctification_n fear_n 2._o joy_n and_o fear_n you_o shall_v find_v another_o combination_n of_o mix_a affection_n the_o like_a of_o sin_n be_v to_o be_v have_v and_o by_o who_o we_o have_v propitiation_n chap._n 2.7_o reason_n 2_o second_o these_o epistle_n set_v before_o we_o and_o give_v we_o certain_a mean_n whereby_o we_o give_v we_o heart_n to_o love_v the_o brethren_n etc._n etc._n these_o and_o many_o more_o such_o sign_n of_o grace_n he_o give_v we_o in_o this_o epistle_n use_v 1_o if_o god_n have_v thus_o write_v and_o give_v we_o these_o epistle_n than_o first_o it_o will_v be_v a_o just_a refutation_n of_o that_o popish_a doctrine_n that_o think_v it_o impossible_a for_o a_o man_n to_o know_v that_o he_o be_v in_o a_o estate_n of_o grace_n if_o john_n do_v write_v these_o epistle_n for_o this_o end_n that_o we_o may_v know_v we_o have_v eternal_a life_n then_o sure_o we_o may_v know_v it_o else_o john_n fail_v of_o his_o end_n and_o for_o john_n to_o be_v disappoint_v be_v less_o matter_n but_o the_o holy_a ghost_n himself_o for_o john_n be_v the_o penman_n of_o the_o holy_a ghost_n the_o holy_a end_n he_o aim_v at_o not_o be_v attainable_a be_v to_o put_v a_o defiance_n upon_o the_o almighty_a and_o therefore_o the_o knowledge_n that_o we_o have_v eternal_a life_n may_v be_v attain_v and_o whereas_o they_o tell_v we_o we_o may_v have_v a_o conjectural_a knowledge_n but_o no_o certain_a knowledge_n but_o to_o say_v we_o have_v a_o knowledge_n and_o yet_o but_o conjectural_a be_v as_o much_o as_o to_o eat_v up_o a_o man_n word_n he_o have_v former_o say_v for_o a_o conjectural_a knowledge_n be_v no_o knowledge_n at_o all_o what_o knowledge_n what_o knowledge_n be_v the_o judgement_n or_o discern_v a_o man_n have_v of_o a_o certain_a thing_n if_o a_o man_n ask_v you_o whether_o he_o know_v if_o such_o a_o man_n have_v possession_n of_o such_o a_o place_n and_o he_o say_v first_o yes_o and_o afterward_o say_v he_o conjecture_n so_o his_o knowledge_n be_v no_o knowledge_n it_o be_v a_o false_a intelligence_n if_o you_o ask_v a_o man_n if_o he_o know_v whether_o such_o a_o man_n have_v such_o a_o portion_n of_o such_o a_o value_n and_o he_o say_v he_o have_v he_o conjecture_n so_o it_o be_v no_o knowledge_n but_o if_o he_o know_v it_o than_o he_o speak_v of_o a_o certainty_n and_o therefore_o if_o the_o holy_a ghost_n say_v we_o may_v know_v it_o then_o sure_o we_o may_v have_v more_o than_o a_o conjectural_a knowledge_n even_o a_o certain_a knowledge_n of_o our_o happy_a estate_n and_o be_v there_o no_o more_o argument_n in_o the_o world_n to_o discourage_v a_o man_n from_o popery_n this_o be_v sufficient_a even_o this_o very_a doctrine_n of_o doubt_v and_o conjectural_a assurance_n of_o a_o man_n eternal_a estate_n which_o leave_v a_o man_n conscience_n destitute_a of_o any_o peace_n consider_v therefore_o harlot_n rome_n a_o harlot_n that_o the_o church_n of_o rome_n be_v a_o harlot_n and_o bring_v up_o strange_a child_n when_o she_o do_v not_o teach_v her_o child_n to_o know_v god_n to_o be_v their_o father_n it_o argue_v she_o stand_v in_o the_o gap_n in_o such_o a_o case_n as_o this_o esa_n 59.15_o 16._o god_n do_v not_o afflict_v willing_o and_o yet_o if_o he_o be_v stir_v up_o he_o must_v destroy_v they_o if_o there_o be_v none_o to_o stand_v in_o the_o gap_n you_o then_o provoke_v the_o wrath_n of_o the_o lord_n and_o this_o displease_v he_o much_o and_o god_n may_v just_o leave_v we_o to_o the_o like_a sin_n
