sedgwick_n in_o his_o forementioned_a discourse_n upon_o the_o covenant_n p._n 173._o that_o we_o must_v distinguish_v between_o the_o intention_n of_o god_n in_o give_v the_o law_n and_o the_o abuse_n or_o pervert_v of_o the_o law_n we_o grant_v say_v he_o that_o many_o of_o the_o jew_n do_v set_v up_o a_o legal_a righteousness_n for_o their_o justification_n and_o rest_v upon_o the_o work_v of_o the_o law_n as_o if_o life_n come_v by_o they_o against_o which_o paul_n do_v notable_o argue_v in_o his_o epistle_n to_o the_o roman_n and_o galatian_n but_o this_o say_v he_o be_v not_o the_o intention_n of_o god_n in_o the_o sanction_n of_o law_n they_o can_v never_o find_v a_o justify_n righteousness_n by_o the_o law_n or_o work_v of_o the_o law_n under_o the_o notion_n of_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n nor_o do_v god_n ever_o propound_v it_o for_o that_o end_n §_o 2._o for_o answer_v hereunto_o we_o say_v that_o since_o by_o mr._n sedgwicks_n own_o confession_n the_o jew_n can_v never_o find_v a_o justify_n righteousness_n by_o the_o law_n or_o by_o the_o work_v of_o it_o from_o hence_o it_o inevitable_o follow_v that_o it_o can_v not_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o faith_n be_v design_v and_o appoint_v by_o god_n himself_o and_o constant_o in_o the_o scripture_n be_v it_o represent_v to_o we_o under_o that_o character_n sect_n v._o but_o whereas_o the_o apostle_n tell_v we_o that_o the_o law_n be_v not_o against_o the_o promise_n gal._n 3._o 21._o mr._n sedgwick_n will_v needs_o hence_o conclude_v that_o the_o law_n be_v not_o a_o covenant_n of_o work_n for_o say_v he_o the_o law_n be_v not_o against_o the_o promise_n nor_o do_v faith_n make_v void_a the_o law_n both_o these_o can_v very_o well_o agree_v together_o but_o so_o they_o can_v not_o if_o the_o law_n justification_n and_o salvation_n all_o by_o christ_n to_o who_o and_o concern_v who_o it_o be_v make_v but_o this_o be_v not_o the_o end_n for_o which_o the_o covenant_n of_o work_n be_v revive_v in_o the_o covenant_n of_o sinai_n for_o although_o in_o its_o self_n it_o require_v a_o perfect_a righteousness_n and_o give_v a_o promise_n of_o life_n thereon_o he_o that_o do_v these_o thing_n shall_v live_v in_o they_o yet_o it_o can_v give_v neither_o righteousness_n nor_o life_n to_o any_o in_o a_o state_n of_o sin_n rom._n 8._o 3._o chap._n 10._o 4._o wherefore_o the_o promise_n and_o the_o law_n have_v divers_a end_n they_o be_v not_o contrary_a to_o one_o another_o nay_o rather_o the_o law_n even_o as_o it_o be_v a_o covenant_n of_o work_n instead_o of_o be_v against_o the_o promise_n it_o tend_v to_o the_o establishment_n of_o it_o by_o declare_v the_o impossibility_n of_o obtain_v reconciliation_n and_o peace_n with_o god_n any_o other_o way_n but_o by_o the_o promise_n themselves_o but_o what_o the_o promise_n will_v afford_v they_o whereunto_o therefore_o they_o see_v a_o necessity_n of_o betake_v themselves_o so_o that_o though_o we_o affirm_v the_o law_n to_o more_o of_o promise_n but_o god_n give_v it_o to_o abraham_n by_o promise_n and_o have_v answer_v the_o question_n or_o objection_n ver_fw-la 19_o wherefore_o then_o serve_v the_o law_n to_o which_o
