answer_n be_v that_o it_o be_v a_o falsehood_n to_o affirm_v that_o he_o which_o make_v the_o less_o aberration_n from_o the_o duty_n command_v be_v equal_a in_o offence_n to_o he_o that_o make_v the_o great_a for_o the_o same_o sin_n for_o substance_n have_v sundry_a step_n and_o degree_n in_o respect_n whereof_o one_o man_n become_v a_o more_o heinous_a offender_n than_o another_o for_o example_n in_o the_o seven_o commandment_n when_o god_n forbid_v the_o commit_n of_o adultery_n he_o forbid_v three_o degree_n of_o the_o same_o sin_n to_o wit_n adultery_n of_o the_o heart_n consist_v of_o inordinate_a and_o unclean_a affection_n adultery_n of_o the_o tongue_n in_o corrupt_a dishonest_a and_o unseemly_a speech_n and_o the_o very_a act_n of_o uncleanness_n and_o filthiness_n commit_v by_o the_o body_n now_o it_o can_v be_v say_v that_o he_o which_o break_v this_o commandment_n only_o in_o the_o first_o degree_n be_v as_o great_a a_o transgressor_n as_o he_o that_o have_v proceed_v to_o the_o second_o and_o so_o to_o the_o three_o and_o therefore_o it_o remain_v for_o a_o undoubted_a truth_n that_o sin_n commit_v against_o the_o law_n of_o god_n be_v not_o equal_a but_o some_o lesser_a some_o great_a sundry_a other_o distinction_n there_o be_v of_o sin_n as_o namely_o that_o the_o main_a sin_n of_o the_o first_o table_n be_v great_a than_o the_o main_a sin_n of_o the_o second_o table_n and_o yet_o the_o main_a sin_n of_o the_o second_o be_v great_a than_o the_o breach_n of_o ceremonial_a duty_n against_o the_o first_o table_n but_o this_o which_o have_v be_v say_v shall_v suffice_v the_o use_n of_o this_o doctrine_n be_v manifold_a first_o by_o it_o we_o learn_v what_o the_o heart_n of_o man_n be_v by_o nature_n namely_o a_o corrupt_a and_o unclean_a fountain_n out_o of_o which_o issue_v in_o the_o course_n of_o this_o life_n the_o stream_n of_o corruption_n infinite_a in_o number_n noisome_a in_o quality_n heinous_a in_o degree_n dangerous_a in_o effect_n for_o from_o thence_o do_v flow_v all_o the_o difference_n of_o sin_n before_o name_v with_o their_o several_a branch_n and_o infinite_a many_o more_o that_o can_v be_v rehearse_v this_o must_v move_v we_o humble_o to_o sue_v unto_o god_n &_o earnest_o to_o entreat_v he_o to_o wash_v we_o thorough_o from_o our_o wickedness_n &_o cleanse_v we_o from_o our_o sin_n yea_o to_o purge_v and_o to_o rinse_v the_o fountain_n thereof_o our_o unclean_a and_o pollute_a heart_n and_o when_o by_o god_n mercy_n in_o christ_n apprehend_v by_o faith_n our_o heart_n shall_v be_v purify_v they_o to_o set_v watch_n &_o ward_n over_o they_o 9_o and_o to_o keep_v they_o with_o all_o diligence_n second_o it_o teach_v we_o that_o miserable_a mortal_a man_n 23._o be_v not_o guilty_a of_o one_o or_o more_o sin_n but_o of_o many_o &_o sundry_a corruption_n both_o of_o heart_n and_o life_n who_o can_v understand_v his_o fault_n say_v david_n now_o the_o allowance_n of_o either_o the_o number_n or_o the_o nature_n or_o the_o measure_n of_o his_o sin_n last_o the_o consideration_n of_o this_o point_n must_v be_v a_o bar_n to_o keep_v we_o in_o that_o we_o be_v not_o too_o secure_a or_o presumptuous_a of_o our_o own_o estate_n for_o as_o much_o as_o we_o learn_v out_o of_o the_o word_n of_o god_n that_o in_o respect_n of_o the_o multitude_n of_o our_o corruption_n this_o our_o life_n be_v full_a of_o much_o evil_n and_o many_o difficulty_n that_o we_o have_v whole_a army_n of_o enemy_n to_o encounter_v with_o all_o not_o only_o out_o of_o we_o in_o the_o world_n abroad_o but_o within_o we_o
lurk_v even_o in_o our_o own_o flesh_n and_o upon_o this_o consideration_n that_o we_o shall_v be_v at_o continual_a defiance_n with_o they_o use_v all_o holy_a mean_n to_o get_v the_o victory_n over_o they_o by_o the_o daily_a exercise_n of_o invocation_n and_o repentance_n and_o by_o a_o continual_a practice_n of_o new_a obedience_n unto_o all_o the_o law_n and_o commandment_n of_o god_n according_a to_o the_o measure_n of_o grace_n receive_v and_o so_o much_o of_o the_o three_o ground_n chap._n iii_o of_o the_o subjection_n and_o power_n of_o conscience_n the_o four_o and_o last_o ground_n be_v touch_v the_o subjection_n and_o power_n of_o conscience_n wherein_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v two_o thing_n what_o conscience_n be_v and_o what_o be_v the_o natural_a condition_n of_o it_o in_o every_o man_n for_o the_o first_o the_o name_n of_o conscience_n will_v give_v light_n to_o the_o thing_n itself_o for_o it_o signify_v a_o knowledge_n join_v with_o a_o knowledge_n and_o it_o be_v so_o term_v in_o two_o respect_n first_o because_o when_o a_o man_n know_v or_o think_v any_o thing_n by_o mean_n of_o conscience_n he_o know_v what_o he_o know_v &_o think_v second_o because_o by_o it_o man_n know_v that_o thing_n of_o himself_o which_o god_n also_o know_v of_o he_o man_n have_v two_o witness_n of_o his_o thought_n god_n and_o his_o own_o conscience_n god_n be_v the_o first_o and_o chief_a and_o conscience_n be_v the_o second_o subordinate_a unto_o god_n bear_v witness_n unto_o god_n either_o with_o the_o man_n or_o against_o he_o therefore_o it_o be_v nothing_o else_o but_o a_o part_n of_o the_o understanding_n whereby_o a_o man_n know_v what_o he_o think_v what_o he_o will_v and_o desire_n as_o also_o in_o what_o manner_n he_o know_v think_v or_o will_v either_o good_a or_o evil_n whereunto_o this_o must_v be_v add_v that_o as_o conscience_n know_v our_o thought_n will_n &_o action_n so_o it_o testify_v thereof_o unto_o god_n either_o with_o we_o or_o against_o us._n in_o the_o second_o place_n the_o natural_a condition_n or_o property_n of_o every_o man_n conscience_n be_v this_o that_o in_o regard_n of_o authority_n and_o power_n it_o be_v place_v in_o the_o middle_n between_o man_n and_o god_n so_o as_o it_o be_v under_o god_n and_o yet_o above_o man_n and_o this_o natural_a condition_n have_v two_o part_n the_o first_o be_v the_o subjection_n of_o conscience_n to_o god_n and_o his_o word_n concern_v which_o subjection_n we_o have_v this_o rule_n that_o god_n alone_o by_o his_o word_n do_v only_o bind_v the_o conscience_n by_o cause_v it_o in_o every_o action_n either_o to_o excuse_v for_o well_o do_v or_o accuse_v for_o sin_n and_o this_o god_n do_v proper_o for_o first_o he_o be_v the_o only_a lord_n of_o the_o conscience_n which_o create_v it_o and_o govern_v it_o 2._o again_o he_o be_v the_o only_a lawgiver_n that_o have_v power_n to_o save_v or_o destroy_v the_o soul_n for_o the_o keep_n &_o break_v of_o his_o law_n jam._n 4._o 12._o 3._o and_o further_o man_n conscience_n be_v know_v to_o none_o beside_o himself_o but_o to_o god_n what_o man_n know_v the_o thing_n of_o a_o man_n save_o the_o spirit_n of_o a_o man_n which_o be_v in_o he_o 1._o cor._n 2._o 11._o and_o it_o be_v god_n only_o that_o give_v liberty_n to_o the_o conscience_n in_o regard_n of_o his_o own_o law_n upon_o this_o it_o follow_v that_o no_o man_n commandment_n or_o law_n can_v of_o itself_o and_o by_o it_o own_o sovereign_a power_n bind_v conscience_n but_o do_v it_o only_o by_o the_o authority_n and_o virtue_n of_o the_o write_a word_n of_o god_n or_o some_o part_n thereof_o and_o therefore_o if_o it_o be_v allege_v that_o subjection_n be_v due_a to_o the_o magistrate_n for_o conscience_n sake_n rom._n 13._o 5._o the_o answer_n be_v at_o hand_n that_o subjection_n be_v indeed_o to_o be_v perform_v to_o civil_a authority_n ordain_v by_o god_n and_o obedience_n also_o to_o the_o law_n of_o the_o not_o of_o faith_n second_o when_o a_o thing_n be_v do_v upon_o a_o erroneous_a â—rrante_fw-la conscience_n it_o be_v not_o of_o faith_n and_o therefore_o it_o be_v a_o sin_n thus_o the_o masse-priest_n sin_v in_o say_v mass_n though_o he_o think_v in_o his_o conscience_n the_o thing_n he_o do_v be_v the_o ordinance_n of_o god_n and_o thus_o heretic_n do_v die_v heretic_n though_o when_o they_o die_v they_o be_v full_o persuade_v there_o opinion_n be_v the_o truth_n again_o in_o the_o same_o manner_n put_v the_o case_n a_o man_n shall_v be_v of_o opinion_n that_o fornication_n or_o theft_n be_v thing_n arbitrarie_a and_o indifferent_a and_o hereupon_o his_o conscience_n shall_v tell_v he_o he_o may_v take_v opportunity_n and_o commit_v either_o of_o these_o sin_n whether_o be_v this_o action_n in_o the_o party_n thus_o persuade_v a_o sin_n or_o no_o i_o answer_v the_o case_n be_v plain_a that_o the_o fact_n be_v do_v upon_o a_o erroneous_a conscience_n and_o therefore_o must_v be_v a_o sin_n in_o the_o doer_n for_o the_o error_n of_o the_o judgement_n can_v take_v away_o the_o nature_n of_o that_o which_o be_v simple_o evil_a sin_n be_v sin_n and_o so_o remain_v notwithstanding_o any_o contrary_a persuasion_n of_o the_o conscience_n the_o reason_n be_v because_o though_o the_o conscience_n err_v and_o be_v misinform_v yet_o it_o bind_v so_o far_o forth_o as_o that_o if_o a_o man_n judge_v a_o thing_n to_o be_v evil_a either_o simple_o or_o in_o some_o respect_n though_o false_o and_o yet_o afterward_o do_v it_o he_o have_v sin_v and_o offend_v the_o majesty_n of_o god_n as_o much_o as_o in_o he_o lie_v three_o when_o a_o thing_n as_o do_v with_o a_o repugn_v repugnantâ—_n or_o gainsay_v conscience_n though_o upon_o error_n and_o false_a relation_n to_o a_o other_o and_o be_v a_o member_n of_o a_o society_n so_o the_o question_n of_o conscience_n be_v to_o be_v distinguish_v some_o concern_v man_n simple_o consider_v by_o himself_o some_o again_o as_o he_o stand_v in_o relation_n to_o a_o other_o man_n stand_v in_o
of_o god_n again_o they_o must_v let_v they_o go_v as_o they_o come_v they_o be_v not_o to_o strive_v against_o they_o for_o the_o more_o they_o labour_v to_o resist_v they_o the_o more_o shall_v they_o be_v entangle_v with_o they_o the_o second_o thing_n to_o be_v use_v in_o way_n of_o remedy_n for_o the_o stay_n of_o the_o mind_n in_o this_o tentation_n be_v that_o though_o it_o shall_v be_v grant_v that_o the_o foresay_a evil_n and_o blasphemous_a thought_n be_v our_o sin_n yet_o we_o be_v to_o remember_v that_o they_o may_v through_o the_o mercy_n and_o goodness_n of_o god_n be_v pardon_v if_o they_o be_v hearty_o and_o unfeigned_o repent_v of_o yea_o further_o that_o neither_o they_o nor_o any_o other_o sin_n except_o that_o against_o the_o holy_a ghost_n do_v condemn_v he_o that_o pray_v against_o they_o &_o be_v hearty_o sorry_a for_o they_o it_o be_v paul_n complaint_n rom._n 7._o 19_o that_o he_o do_v not_o the_o good_a which_o he_o will_v do_v speak_v of_o the_o inward_a endeavour_n of_o his_o heart_n and_o again_o that_o he_o do_v the_o evil_n which_o he_o will_v not_o meaning_n in_o respect_n of_o the_o corruption_n of_o his_o nature_n now_o upon_o this_o that_o he_o endeavour_v to_o do_v that_o which_o be_v agreeable_a to_o the_o will_n of_o god_n that_o he_o loathe_v and_o detest_a the_o contrary_a and_o strive_v against_o his_o corruption_n how_o do_v he_o comfort_v himself_o mark_v the_o word_n follow_v v_o 20._o if_o i_o do_v that_o i_o will_v not_o that_o be_v to_o say_v if_o against_o my_o general_a purpose_n i_o sin_n against_o god_n if_o i_o be_v sorry_a for_o it_o if_o i_o be_v displease_v with_o myself_o because_o i_o can_v not_o obey_v god_n in_o that_o perfection_n i_o desire_v it_o be_v no_o more_o i_o that_o do_v it_o but_o sin_n that_o dwell_v in_o i_o fron_n this_o example_n of_o paul_n i_o gather_v that_o if_o any_o man_n have_v in_o his_o mind_n evil_a thought_n and_o do_v as_o paul_n do_v grieve_v because_o he_o thereby_o offend_v god_n if_o he_o do_v abhor_v they_o and_o pray_v against_o they_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v for_o they_o they_o shall_v never_o be_v lay_v to_o his_o charge_n the_o party_n then_o that_o be_v trouble_v with_o with_o these_o thought_n may_v upon_o these_o ground_n stay_v his_o mind_n and_o comfort_n himself_o for_o if_o he_o shall_v not_o be_v condemn_v for_o they_o then_o let_v he_o not_o fear_v they_o above_o measure_n the_o three_o point_n to_o be_v remember_v be_v that_o the_o party_n must_v not_o be_v alone_o for_o this_o tentation_n begin_v and_o be_v confirm_v and_o increase_v by_o solitariness_n and_o the_o party_n thus_o distress_v love_v to_o be_v apart_o by_o themselves_o from_o the_o society_n of_o other_o and_o for_o that_o cause_n in_o malicious_o assault_v he_o with_o strong_a and_o powerful_a tentation_n in_o the_o wilderness_n the_o four_o point_n to_o be_v remember_v of_o the_o party_n trouble_v be_v that_o he_o must_v as_o hearty_o and_o earnest_o repent_v he_o of_o those_o his_o evil_a thought_n as_o of_o evil_a word_n and_o deed_n for_o the_o truth_n be_v because_o man_n be_v loose-minded_n and_o have_v no_o more_o in_o this_o case_n who_o keep_v the_o word_n of_o god_n in_o his_o heart_n that_o he_o may_v not_o 1â—_n sin_v against_o he_o the_o second_o rule_n of_o the_o keep_n of_o the_o heart_n be_v to_o establish_v our_o thought_n by_o counsel_n it_o be_v the_o wise_a man_n advice_n in_o so_o many_o word_n prov._n 20._o 18._o wherein_o he_o will_v teach_v we_o that_o it_o be_v the_o property_n of_o a_o worldly_a wise_a man_n in_o matter_n of_o weight_n not_o to_o trust_v to_o his_o own_o wit_n but_o to_o follow_v the_o direction_n and_o counsel_n of_o wise_a and_o skilful_a man_n and_o if_o
